As Trump Leaves the US, Mueller Files New Charges Against Manafort and Indicts His Russian Associate

Politics • Views: 27,070

As Trump leaves the country, on his way to Canada for the G7-1 meeting and then to Singapore for a chat with his latest dictator crush Kim Jong-Un, Robert Mueller announces new charges against Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort, and indicts his right-hand man Konstantin Kilimnik (a suspected Russian intelligence operative).

Prosecutors said the obstruction charge relates to Mr. Manafort’s efforts to coach the stories of witnesses against him. He remains charged with money laundering, illegal foreign lobbying and lying to federal officials.

Mr. Manafort’s longtime associate, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, was added to the case, and was charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice. The charges are related to an effort by him, Mr. Manafort and other associates to have prominent European politicians vouch publicly for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Russia former president of Ukraine, who was Mr. Manafort’s client.

Quick! Now that Trump’s out of the country let’s pass a law banning entry into the US by any orange people named “Trump,” until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

Trump says he’s going to have “tough talks” with other leaders at the G7. I wonder if any of those leaders will do more than say “Hi” and then move on?

He wants Russia re-admitted so that he’ll have someone to talk to at dinner.

Repost from downstairs:

re: #499 calochortus

NPR had a piece on Muslim food workers and Ramadan. One of them said something to the effect that it was actually good to work feeding others because it let him reflect more on his fast. None of them objected to other people eating in their presence. It is presumably harder to fast here than in a Muslim country where everyone is fasting, but I assume they adjust.

re: #550 electrotek

While in Pakistan, many Muslims get triggered when they see anyone eating in public. There was a good Op-Ed in The Express Tribune about that, which was very spot on. I’ll be sure to link it when I find it (kind of hard to do at work at the moment).

Mayors want to stop plan to ban some abortion advice from doctors

As the Donald Trump administration mulls changes to funding for family planning and preventative health services, cities across the country decry the possible outcome.

More than 75 mayors nationwide signed a joint letter to Trump’s health czar, Alex Azar, head of the Department of Health and Human Services, opposing the pending alterations to the country’s Title X program. Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner were the Texans that added their names to the letter.

The dozens of city representatives oppose a proposed rule that controls the manner in which doctors and health providers refer patients to abortions.

Title X does not fund abortion services, but the changes would strip funding for doctors and health providers who refer women to abortion services without the patients specifically asking first. Those doctors are allowed to deliver a list of options, which may include abortion providers, but the list must not exclusively have abortion providers on it.

These adjustments impact Texans who already face barriers to abortion services since the state legislature abandoned funding in 2013. Reproductive rights advocates call the proposal a “gag rule.”

“This is an incredibly dangerous step for America to take where we are gagging or blocking what our medical professionals can talk to a patient about,” Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas spokesperson Sarah Wheat said.

Regardless of what you think of him, this is just shitty news, Krauthammer has been told by his doctors that he only has weeks to live. Obligatory “fuck cancer.”

However, recent tests have revealed that the cancer has returned. There was no sign of it as recently as a month ago, which means it is aggressive and spreading rapidly. My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live. This is the final verdict. My fight is over.

Momentary utility within the larger project of villifying everyone that isn’t them.

Don’t think of them as people, think of them as screwdrivers—flat versus Philips-head—that’s the mindset.

It’s crazy because there are A LOT of gullible Middle Eastern Christians that constantly regurgitate Republican talking points and enthusiastically supporting Trump…while fallaciously claiming to be proud Christians by citing their indigenous Christian heritage.

It’s mind-boggling still, even after the Trump administration has deported countless Chaldeans from metro Detroit back to Iraq.

Most of the “Christians” here supporting them only support them in the abstract. They don’t think about their skin color, or they wouldn’t consider them Christian. They’re useful props. Actually, they probably do, in some numbers, but your basic point is probably correct: Middle-Easterners are 1) considered enemies/victims of Muslims, so sympathy; and 2) are mainly “over there” - WAY “over there”. Hispanics? Are generally “here” and often heedless of their proper “place” in American society……

Because they can’t use them as a tool against another group I.e. Muslims and Hispanic family values are actually practiced unlike wingnut ones.

86
electrotek  Jun 8, 2018 • 1:42:29pm

I even find these same Middle Eastern Christians demonizing Hispanics often (in spite of the obvious shared Catholic heritage) and advocating the wall.

They obviously received lots of generous services and support from established Hispanic churches when they first came here and this is how they repay them?

It’s unbelievable. But then again I’m not a person that bites the hands that feeds them so that’s a testament to my morality.

I also want to add, it may sound like I’m speaking in absolutes but I don’t want to smear all of them in the same brush. Is that still on? Last I heard they were still a few signatures shy of the 218 they need to force the DACA bill onto the floor.

Yeah, that’s the same on the last I’ve heard. But it’s not like we get to have quiet days anymore, so why not?

Anti-science kills:
Donald Trump Called Asbestos Poisoning a Mob-Led Conspiracy, Now His EPA Won’t Evaluate Asbestos Already in Homes

The Environmental Protection Agency will not consider the health risks and impacts of asbestos already in the environment when evaluating the dangers associated with the chemical compound, Scott Pruitt, the agency’s head, quietly announced last week. That means asbestos used in tiles, piping and adhesives throughout homes and businesses in the United States will remain largely unchecked and unaccounted for. Nearly 15,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related diseases, but President Donald Trump has called the substance “100 percent safe, once applied.”

In his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, Trump argued that the association of the chemical with health risks was part of a mob-created conspiracy. “I believe that the movement against asbestos was led by the mob, because it was often mob-related companies that would do the asbestos removal. Great pressure was put on politicians, and as usual, the politicians relented,” he wrote.

Also my stove has been taken over by ants. I for one am not too happy about my new overlords and do not wish to toil in their sugarcaves. They walk around the ant traps like they aren’t there. I need an ant nuke.

Texas leads nation in Confederate monument removal, report showsAUSTIN (Nexstar) - More Confederate statues and monuments have been removed in Texas than in any other state since 2015, according to a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center. That trend does not stretch to the State Capitol, where Texas lawmakers have been hesitant to act.

The organization reports that of the 110 symbols removed since June 2015, 31 of them were in Texas. Virginia was next with 14, and Florida removed 9.

The data starts in June 2015 because that is when a gunman opened fire inside a Charleston, South, church, killing nine people. That shooting sparked a nationwide conversation about racial relations and Confederacy after the shooter was tied to white nationalism.

Lubbock has a Confederate monument on the courthouse grounds, even though the town was not founded until 27 years after the Civil War ended. Like many others, it was erected at the height of the Jim Crow era.

I’m not even sure this is anti-science as much as it is the fact that Trump probably had to spend a lot of money on asbestos remediation in his various properties. And he probably liked the stuff because it was cheap.

How wet are parts of Ohio?

How about 5+ inches of rain just outside Chillicothe.

That all had to have happened between 10 AM to about 4PM. Almost an inch an hour. No wonder that part of Ohio is under flood watches. The whole area is very hilly with lots of little creeks in their valleys all feeding into the Scioto River.

I bet later this weekend there is flooding at the mouth of the Scioto where it feeds into the Ohio River at Portsmouth. And this crap is predicted all weekend long.

Send boats!

Texas state senator accused of forcing beverage commission to drop probe into her bar

A Texas state senator is accused of obstructing justice by influencing the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) to drop an investigation into the bar she and her husband partly owned, The Austin American-Statesman reported Friday.

Marcus Stokke, a former TABC sergeant who oversaw the regulatory body’s enforcement in two dozen counties, filed a lawsuit this week accusing the agency of improperly ousting him after he reported allegations against state Sen. Joan Huffman (R).

the best part is that the sheriff is going to be out of a job and the guy he fired isn’t.

The fired deputy might hypothetically have a cause of action under the whistleblower statute, arguing a common law exception under contravention of public policy. He’d have to successfully argue that he has a Constitutional equal protection and due process right to run for public office (and possibly a concomitant first amendment right to petition for redress of grievances) and that he was explicitly fired for exercising those rights. It’s a bit of a stretch I admit.

Truth. Still remember my first encounter with Rick Santorum in 1977 when he tried to pick up a girl at a party we were having.

She slapped him in the face.

So he tried again and brushed up against girl #2.

He got another slap in the face.

Priceless!!!!
