Downstairs the subject came up again as to why Trump won.

May I suggest that the reason Trump won (though we all know he lost the popular vote by 3 million), is that questions like the following is accepted by many Americans as a legitimate question:

Do You Use Bible Commentaries Written by Women?

A pastor writes in to ask: “Pastor John, would a pastor who uses a biblical commentary written by a woman be placing himself under the biblical instruction of a woman? If so, would this not go against Paul’s instruction in 1 Timothy 2:12?”

[…]

That’s a 5 year old blog post with preacher/teacher John Piper. He’s trying to be a moderate in answering that question by saying it’s just a book, but Piper concludes with:

There is this interposition of the phenomenon called book and writing that puts the woman as author out of the reader’s sight and, in a sense, takes away the dimension of her female personhood. Whereas, if she were standing right in front of me and teaching me as my shepherd, week in and week out, I couldn’t make that separation. I think the Bible says that women shouldn’t take that role in the church.

In a society where that is considered deep thought, one gets an autocrat like Trump.

The above link came up in the never ending twitter fight between Paige Patterson defenders and those who are trying to expose the problem of the Southern Baptists.

Downstairs the subject came up again as to why Trump won.

Michael Moore explained it all as early as the summer of 2016. I ignored him at the time as I have generally found him a bit of a gadfly, but he explained that Trump was going to win and why, and it was just a matter of mathematics:

All DT had to do was to carry all the states that the GOP won in 2012 (no problem there) plus carry the four rust belt states of OH, PA, WI and MI. It was just a matter of numbers, With those electoral votes they did not even need Florida.

So they (and their tovarischi ) concentrated their efforts on those four states and won those states by wafer-thin margins and won the election despite losing the popular vote.

Say what you want about Michael Moore, but he really nailed that one.

Women should be neither seen nor heard, but they can be read, so long as you don’t know you’re reading a woman’s writings.

Trumpists ignore Trump’s own abuse of women, because at their heart American fundamentalists, who overwhelmingly support Trump, are practitioners of a misogynistic religion:

Macron, Trudeau Say They Weren’t Going to Tell Trump Where G-7 After Party Was (Borowitz Report)

LA MALBAIE, CANADA (The Borowitz Report)—Saying that they were “tremendously relieved” that Donald J. Trump is leaving the G-7 summit early, the leaders of France and Canada said on Friday that they had been planning not to tell Trump the location of the G-7 after party.

Speaking to reporters, Emmanuel Macron and Justin Trudeau said that there had been “total consensus” among non-U.S. participants to withhold information about the time, place, and existence of an after party from Trump.

“The plan was, if Trump asked about an after party, we were going to be, like, ‘Ask Angela Merkel,’ ” Macron said. “Angela was going to totally stonewall him.”

Merkel confirmed that she had planned to tell Trump that she “didn’t think anyone was planning to do anything” after the summit and steadfastly to deny “hearing anything” about an after party.

“I would have had no problem lying to him, despite our two countries going way back, to D-Day or whenever,” Merkel said, rolling her eyes.

Trudeau said that the after party will proceed as scheduled when the G-7 concludes, on Saturday, adding, “Now that Trump is out of here, we’ll really have something to celebrate.”

FOX has an article up claiming Trump was really “winning” in Canada because other leaders and organisations are all making the same complaint about him.

archive.is (avoiding giving FOX a click)

Steve Hilton is an idiot.

Ten different people tell you “don’t put your hand on that hot stove” and you do it anyway is not “sticking it to the elites.”

You know you’re getting somewhere when your opponents are all attacking you in the same way.

So President Trump should feel a strong sense of satisfaction with a job well done after leaving the slightly pointless Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Canada on Saturday for another likely far more consequential summit in Singapore with North Korea dictator Kim Jong Un.

The U.S. president’s critics are all using identical language in their denunciations of his policy positions.

The complaints from U.S. allies over President Trump’s trade policies is that these polices are “unprecedented.” They say he is undermining the “rules-based international order.”

That, as far as the global foreign policy establishment is concerned, is all you need to say. End of discussion. Notice that they don’t actually engage with the substance of President Trump’s arguments at all.

We hear these criticisms from the pompous pearl-clutchers of the international elite.

So let’s see. The DNC helped let Sanders and his allies draft the platform which I btw have no problem with even though I think they don’t have an ounce of pragmatism in their bodies. They’ve kept the very undemocratic caucuses which I hate. But hey they required that you actually have to be a member of the Democratic Party to try to get the Democratic nomination for President? What a bunch of neo-lib monsters! // Except no, not at all, maybe if Sanders had actually shown an interest in working to get other candidates elected beside himself, they wouldn’t have needed to do this. They can hate on HRC all she wants but the fact is HRC is more of a team politician than Bernie will ever be and the reason for that is simple, Hillary isn’t full of herself like Bernie is, she knows we need to elect as many like minded individuals as possible. Bernie only discovered that last spring and I think he still doesn’t get it.

A lot of lefties think the Mueller stuff is a distraction from the “real issues” with Trump but I really don’t think it is. The fact is the Kremlin has a vested interest in dividing the West. And yes they do use far left and right candidates to push that divide. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bullshit on both left and right when it comes to Putin. Righties who look up to him as a model of what a leader ought to be and lefties who think Russia has a right to put its nose where we have in the past. I see myself as an advocate for the rights of smaller nations which is part of why I can’t stand Putin and wish him to fail everywhere he goes.

59
HappyWarrior  Jun 9, 2018 • 3:44:52pm

That’s not to say that we wouldn’t need to oppose Trump even if he wasn’t a Russian stooge but Trump being a Russian stooge defines him. It defines his domestic and international policies. Domestic by making us a less welcoming place to immigrants and to our trading partners. International but alienating long time allies. Trump has a lot of nerve. He went after Canada for the War of 1812 but also wants to let go the Russian invasion of Crimea which happened while Putin was in power. And then he lies repeatedly by saying “No one’s tougher on Russia than me.” Trump would sell out Europe to Putin in a heartbeat and that’s why Macron and Merkel especially can’t satnd the fucker.

“… The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Friday that an open records request revealed that the payment was made last year using a state-issued credit card belonging to Craig McCullah, who was serving as deputy assistant secretary of state under Kobach at the time.

McCullah, who is now seeking the Republican nomination for secretary of state, told the Capital-Journal that he was not aware that his card had been used to make the payment. He said he was deployed in Ukraine with the Oklahoma Army National Guard at the time of the payment.

“I was out of the country,” he said. “I was never told about this.”

A credit card receipt from the courthouse transaction shows that the payment was carried out by Kobach’s chief of staff Bryan Harden, according to the Capital-Journal.

A spokeswoman for Kobach said state money was used to pay the fine because “the office is the defendant in the case,” rather than Kobach personally. …”

Why, I think he just called Prime Minister Trudeau a liar.

He should answer back: “Donald makes some bold claims about me and the truth. He should realize his own treatment of reality calls into question anything he says. This I can tell you.”

JFTR, guys, WHAT “arguments”??

I’ve seen/heard little/nothing out of Donald Trump’s piehole regarding international trade issues that even remotely addresses any real-world situations: just alternating whiny-victimization and faux-tough-guy bluster about how “everybody” is “taking advantage of us”, and no real “answers” outside of cheapjack bullying, puerile name-calling and unilaterally imposing tariffs with little thought of how they will actually harm “unfair” foreign countries (they won’t, much) or possibly hurt domestic interests (they will, much).

And yet, the FOX bootlickers will keep going on about “bold” and “innovative” this pathetic caricature of diplomacy is…

I’ve been blessed that way a couple of times.

One time I was living in St. Cloud MN and there was the unmistakable sound of round engines overhead. I ran out and a B-17 and B-24 heading to Oshkosh were circling town to land for fuel.

A few years later, one weekend a B-17 and a DC-3 were at the airport in Madison WI for an airshow. We didn’t have the money for rides but we went and watched them come and go a number of times then went to the hanger dance that Saturday night. They were supposed to fly out that Tuesday but were grounded - Tuesday, Sept 11, 2001…

And the wingnut press will follow behind him to insist that however flawed the “deal” ends up being, it’s still the “best” anybody could have managed and “better” than Obama could have managed. Look for comparisons to the JCPA and insistence that there’s little chance that NK will cheat and violate the “deal” because they’re “afraid” of what will happen.

Yep. On the money, IMO: Given Trump’s background posturing for “reality TV” as a means of polishing his “image”, I’m guessing the whole Singapore Summit has been scripted as a sort of large-scale RTV episode: any actual results from the meeting with Kim are likely to be a secondary consideration at best.
The primary goal (as it is with everything Trump) is glowing publicity, YUUUUGE ratings, and laudatory (and ego-boosting) press over the Great Historic Historicness of the Historic Summit. And of course, plentiful opportunities to bash critics…..

And the part he doesn’t understand is that the real winner his is Kim Jong-Un. Suddenly, without conceding a thing or taking steps toward diplomacy, he has the recognition of the most powerful nation on Earth.

Neville Chamberlain was intelligent. Contrast to Trump.

Chamberlain was trying to buy time for the United Kingdom when it needed to rearm. It was not in a position to take on the Nazis, and the US was infested with isolationists and America Firsters (sounds familiar). Chamberlain gets somewhat of a bad rap for his “peace in our time” line, but he was stuck with the reality of the situation.

Even when the UK declared war on Germany over the invasion of Poland, it wasn’t ready for war, but was in far better shape than it was over the Sudetenland.

It’s interesting how using that article or not using that article could get you in a big argument with someone. Ukrainian nationalists prefer it just be Ukraine while the Russian sympathizers call it The Ukraine signifying their belief that they see Ukraine as another part of Russia. I find myself sympathetic to the nationalists since the borders have been defined and Ukraine has experienced Russian control before with disastrous results for the people there.

Much of the “Chamberlain was a peacnik idiot” bullshit is post-war propaganda promoted by the man who wanted his chair and ultimately became known more for his bellicose speeches than being a remarkable leader: Winston Churchill. Much like Donny today, Winston felt that his legacy was dependent not simply on the successes under his leadership, but upon tearing down his political rivals to further elevate himself. Thus Chamberlain was portrayed as an idiot who pursued peace at any cost, feeling free to do so as Neville had died not long after stepping down and few in the peerage were prepared to risk their futures defending a dead man.

We can’t underestimate too how war exhausted the world was at the point. I mean don’t get me wrong. Hitler needed to be confronted. And I am glad that the Allies did what they did but the people who blindly attack Chamberlain totally ignore how WWI impacted the people of Europe.

And if the West had intervened to save Czechoslovakia they would have had a democratic ally who could defend themselves when Germany also wasn’t ready. Instead they waited to intervene to save the Poland of the Colonels—one of the most squalid little regimes in history—whom they could do nothing to help.

Who was “The West”? There was no popular support for war at that time, the public in Paris and London were perfectly okay with giving away Czechoslovakia if it meant there would not be another war. And while there were military leaders in both countries that hated the Germans with a passion, even they were realistic about the odds of stopping a German invasion. Hell, up until Dunkirk and the Blitz, the Brits continued to entertain the idea of an “honorable peace” where they would agree to Germany keeping what she’d taken so long as she agreed to respect Britain’s colonial claims.

Right. I’m just countering the narrative that the Munich agreement was to allow Britain’s military buildup to continue until they were “ready” to face Germany. They were never ready, but they jumped into a much less advantageous military situation in 1939, after flushing away an ally whose defenses the German generals were thoroughly afraid of. So much for military considerations motivating the giveaway.

When I went to Tikal, we traveled by DC-3. I went for the ruins, but might have done it just for the flights.

Ukraine is the correct name of the country. The Ukraine was a Soviet styling.

Crimea is the correct name of the peninsula. Donbass is the correct name of the area of eastern Ukraine. Sudan is the correct name of the country; The Sudan was its colonial name.

On the other hand, The Gambia is the correct name for that nation.

Russian has no articles — how can “The Ukraine” be a “Soviet styling?”

Ukraina in Russian and Ukrainian is a common noun meaning borderland. The definite article in English turns it into a proper name, so we say “Canada,” but “The United States.” (BTW, “The Lebanon” is a carryover from Arabic, which uses an article before the names of countries.)

Ukraina in Russian and Ukrainian is a common noun meaning borderland. The definite article in English turns it into a proper name, so we say “Canada,” but “The United States.” (BTW, “The Lebanon” is a carryover from Arabic, which uses an article before the names of countries.)

Via Wikipedia:

Since the Ukrainian language does not use definite articles, “Ukraine” is the proper name in the Ukrainian language. However, in languages which possess definite articles, the question of whether the “official” name for Ukraine includes the definite article is subject to discussion. “Ukraine” and “The Ukraine” are both possible translations of the Ukrainian “Україна”.

Since the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, the English-speaking world has changed its usage from “the Ukraine” to “Ukraine”. From November 1991, several American journalists began to use “Ukraine” instead of “the Ukraine”. The Associated Press dropped the article “the” on 3 December 1991. This approach has become established in journalism and diplomacy since (other examples are the style guides of The Guardian and The Times). In 1993 the Ukrainian government requested that the article be dropped.

Referring to the country as “the Ukraine” instead of “Ukraine” is considered insulting and derogatory by many Ukrainians. U.S. ambassador William Taylor states the usage of “the Ukraine” is now seen as questioning the country’s sovereignty. He noted parallels in (particularly British) English, where forms such as “the Lebanon” were once usual for non-sovereign territories, as one would for instance refer to “the Midwest”. Another theory about the origin of “The Ukraine” comes from Bernard Pares, an English historian of Russia. His theory suggested that “the Ukraine” came from French usage.[citation needed] The French language uses definite articles in naming countries - la France, le Canada, and l’Ukraine are a few examples. However, the definite article is lost when translated. English speakers do not use “the France” or “the Canada” in the English language.

Well, keep in mind there’s several layers of filtering going on with those types of shows these days.

One, the idea of the “surprise! It’s super expensive” has changed how people view their old crap, and how they choose what old crap they take to be looked over.

Second, the show is a selection of segments from a cattle run of people getting stuff appraised (I’ve actually gone through the process, but didn’t make it onscreen with the stuff I had brought), so it’s maybe one in a hundred that gets through to a show, and generally at that point the interviewee has some sense that their thing is special, and thus the question about money comes pretty naturally.

Yup. I was incorrect in the Russian sourcing for the name.

“The” does seem to be a sort of colonial usage for territories (The Congo, &c).

Using the article to set off a common noun is more fundamental. “The United States” is not a colonial usage.

Heitkamp voted against confirming the creationist for NASA director. She voted against the Toomey Amendment (the so-called “dangerous sanctuary cities” bill).

She voted to remove any armed forces from Yemen not authorised by Congress.

Heitkamp may not be a liberal as Elizabeth Warren, but she is far-and-away better than any Republican currently in the government.

She represents North Dakota. (Other than being colder and less populous, it is much like my state.) Elizabeth Warren could not be elected there. On the other hand, Don Blankenship probably could.

There was a universal delusion among the pundit class in ‘16 that Trump would follow Dubya and St. Ronnie in filling his cabinet with career politicians/diplomats/etc who would dampen any damage he did to America’s standing by translating his brain droppings into “reasonable” policy. Even Congressional Republicans were willing to go along with the crazier of his appointees because he grabbed up men like Jefferson Beauregard to fill out the seats.

It never seemed to occur to any of them, despite all the warnings to the contrary, that Donny was enough of a wannabe dictator that he would start firing appointees that didn’t do as he wanted and cowed the rest into being his willing accomplices.

Part of the concept of “responsible” is that one is able to figure out, in some general sense, what various claims are made by one’s peers and the outsiders, those not part of one’s normal circle.

There is no one in the US today who is totally cut off from large sources of information.

Here I am not speaking of the elderly and infirm in institutions, who are people who really have limited capability for making judgements.

Nope, I’m writing about your next door neighbor. Even if they spend all day watching Fox News, their cable channel (or satellite) has plenty of other stations. Public radio has low powered repeaters all over this land.

And no one is away from getting mail delivery, unless they set sail.

Public radio (NPR) is not available here. We do have some music stations, Christian hate radio, and conservative talk hate radio.

Cable service is not available. For those who have the money for satellite, they do have a wide variety of television choices. For terrestrial television, good luck with that, they’re all Sinclair Broadcasting here.

Internet service is practically unavailable (it is the largest bill I pay, more than my electric and gas combined).

The best I can do is inform people by word-of-mouth, because they sure aren’t going to get a straight story from the media here.

It reminds me of the time the Berlin Wall fell. At that time, I was stationed aboard an aircraft carrier, and had a privately-owned shortwave radio so I could get more than censored news from AFRTS.

Every night I would put headlines on our shop chalkboard that I’d gathered from services such as the BBC or Deutsche Welle.

Every morning we had a parade of people through our shop who came to read the news chalkboard.

Eventually the word got to my department head, who ordered me to quit putting news headlines on our shop chalkboard.

It will just feed into the psychosis. You’re talking people who’ve been convinced that Europe is a seething caldron of socialism that is being overrun by Muslim hordes, Canada is a socialist prison where people are held hostage by a government who’s taken their guns and taxed them so much that they’re fleeing to America for basic healthcare, and Mexico is a corrupt hellhole where the cartels run everything and the government is secretly working to seize American states by sending in waves of “illegals” to breed until there’s enough of them to take over the governments of Western states.

It’s 1933 and they’re convinced that Chancellor Trump is going to lead America back to the greatness of its heritage. We’re a Reichstag Fire away from Enabling Acts at this point.

1) maliciously bigoted;
2) very, very dull of mind.

Or the combination of the above.

As has always been my mantra: stupid or hateful or both.

Sure.

And anybody in your town can get mail, and thus get newspapers and periodicals from all over.

I bet everyone in your village has been to a town large enough to have a book store (the few which remain) or other source of printed material.

Does your village get delivery service from a public library (say in Sidney or North Platte)?

People can choose to be hermits. It’s their choice. They can also choose to be informed.

We have a public library, of which until recently my wife was the librarian. It does have periodicals (on hunting, fishing, Nebraska Life magazine, no news magazines or newspapers).

We get mail, especially the bi-weekly Nazi newsletter sent from that dipwad rancher in Gordon. We also get free “newspapers” put out by organizations I can’t trace that are allegedly about agriculture but hammer against teaching evolution, climate science, &c mixed in with farm reports.

The nearest book store is 130 miles away in Cheyenne.

I can’t make someone subscribe to The Economist or The Washington Post (which won’t deliver newspapers here anyway).

The Times is beyond parody at this point. It’s just amazing how much water they constantly carry for Trump.

Of course you can’t (though someone could buy such a subscription for your library, no?)

Yet it remains, your neighbors who live off of dodgy information are doing so at their choice. If they really wanted to investigate something as far as the truth of a matter, they could research it.

They did the same for Hitler in the Thirties. They did the same for Bush’s invasion of Iraq.

Reporters like Maggie Haberman become incensed when she is called for covering lies, and other reporters then come in to defend her.

That’s in New York, the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated city in the USA.

Sure. Would you like the address of our library to buy a subscription to a magazine or newspaper? I don’t have the money (I spent it on LGF).

The Martian was on jus a little bit ago. As I was watching, I was remebering how I felt when I first watched it, which was that I wanted to live in that version of America. And then I started thinking I want to return to they tyoe of America where a writer can think that type of book can be written.

And then I got to the end, where Mark is talking to future astronauts, and was talking about space, and and about how, realizing that you could die, that you can either give into it, or start solving the problems to stay alive. This is where we all are. We either give in to Trump and the GOP, or we keep solving the problems that come up, until we reach our goal.

Nope, not going to buy you a subscription to The Economist or any other periodical (though you might try investigating some source of support, which various foundations have for libraries.)

Still like Connery’s Bond the most. Just someone who really transcends era with the character.

Sean Connery is a woman beater. I saw him on TV some years ago and he said that sometimes a woman need a good beating. With a smile on his face.

I was dumbstruck.

I’ve never watched another of his movies after that. He’s a fucking pig.

Watching the latest Antiques Roadshow, which is full of little historical nuggets, … but as usual, the question that comes to my mind is how many of these people showing up with their stuff would still show up if there were not a promise of some outrageous value could be assigned?

Perhaps there is a deeper lesson in here for us… that most people only care about the past if they can cash in on it?

I think many of them are proud of their family heirlooms and just want to get validation of the value. Lots of them say, “well, it’s not going anywhere.”, or it’s going to future generations(who might sell it).

re: #194 Citizen K

It’s just….I’m amazed how in such a short time, Trump has utterly torched decades, carefully cultivated decades of American diplomacy that even Bush the Lesser didn’t manage to destroy and was mostly recovered by the Obama presidency. At least Dubya, inept and dangerous as his foreign policy team was, pretended to make paeans to diplomacy and international alliances. Trump has, within a year and a half, all but declared the remaining G6 as his personal Axis of Evil. He’s destabilized our entire international influence in a fucking ant’s fart time on the historical scale.

And so much of our country fucking loves it because ‘America First!!!!!!!!’ Except at this rate, it’s going to be ‘America Last’, because we’re going to fuck ourselves in a race to the bottom just so we can say we flipped off the world for our bestie Russia.

We’re never going to recover from this. Not for decades, even under the best case scenario where the electorate doesn’t give Dems a similar ant’s fart worth of time to fix everything before deciding to give the entire country back to daddy GOP.

Going to take a long time for any western country to have trust in the USA again. trump has refused to accept any agreements made by previous administrations. Why would anyone trust another admin when it is so easy for the next one to overrule. Cannot imagine how Japan & SK will recover from seeing their long term defence pacts turned into nothing.

Another reason why the US has lost the long term ability to negotiate with trade or defense partners. trump upended previous agreements/commitments. Who in their right mind would go through this again believing the US would honor their word.

re: #311 Targetpractice

People also managed to forget that Career politicians/diplomats would not want to work for trump. Under normal circumstances most of his appointees would (and should) have been rejected by the senate.

In that photo of Trump, it really is Macron that is talking to Trump.

I followed Trumps eyes and they are not fixed on Merkel they are looking up too high and away to his left.

Macron is hidden but you can see his face expression and he is trying to reason with Lumpy Trumpy.

Mekel is just staring him down with that “listen you fool” look and posture.

It actually looks like Macron and Bolton are talking over each other.
