An Unusual Saturday Night Tiny Desk Jam: Third Coast Percussion

May 29, 2018 | Tom Huizenga — Back at the beginning of time, the human voice was the very first instrument. Probably close in second place were folks banging on stuff – in other words, percussionists. The quartet of gentlemen who form the Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion takes primordial pounding into a completely distinctive new league. To be sure, in this Tiny Desk performance, they’ll play their sophisticated, modern marimbas and vibraphones, but be on the lookout for the subtleties of tuned cowbells and 3/4” galvanized steel pipes, like those found at the local hardware store. Add to that a glockenspiel, a MIDI synth, a melodica, a drum kit, children’s deskbells, crotales, a Thai gong and a singing bowl, and you’ve got significant noise-making potential behind Bob Boilen’s desk.

The mesmerizing opening number, “Niagara,” written by the group, is from the band’s latest album, the aqua-centric Paddle to the Sea. This water is fast-moving, with pulsing, repeating patterns in the vibraphone, punctuated by drum beats and a bed of low synth. The Third Coasters follow with another from the album, their own arrangement of a slowly rippling ode to the Amazon River by Philip Glass. Beginning with droplets on the glockenspiel and evocative bowing of both vibraphone and crotales (small bronze discs), the music flows softly, taking its time to fan out in all its quiet beauty.

Torched and Wrecked is, as David Skidmore mentions, something that once happened to his band mate Sean Connors’ automobile. It’s also a butt-kicking ride that includes those steel conduit pipes, which the band cuts to specific lengths to get the desired pitches. Skidmore wrote the piece, but it’s Connors who appears to achieve a kind of cathartic glee pounding on the metal tubes.

In these performances the musicians prove that there’s far more to a top-notch percussion ensemble than pounding on stuff. The precision and the subtlety of their soft tapping, bowing and conjuring of otherworldly sounds raises this ancient art to the highest level.

“Niagara”
“Amazon River” (Phillip Glass)
“Torched and Wrecked”

David Skidmore, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, Sean Connors.

From the previous thread:

re: #346 freetoken

Nope, not going to buy you a subscription to The Economist or any other periodical (though you might try investigating some source of support, which various foundations have for libraries.)

The last foundation which gave our library anything was the Gates Foundation about fifteen years ago, which gave our library two computers.

Grants have pretty much dried up for libraries. I can’t count the number my wife applied for. She got none. (Well, she got one, a safety grant to make the library’s shelving ADA compliant. No grants for books, periodicals, or computer equipment. The GOP intentionally fouled up the small library computer grant service from the FCC.)

I suppose I could change my subscription to The Economist from my house to the library; that way more people could read it.

If someone is interested in donating to a public library to provide something other than hard-right information in the media, please send subscriptions to:

I do what I can to promote Mr. Johnson’s Home for the Sane and Respectable to those I know who have Internet access. (As far as I know none have subscribed, but perhaps some are reading the site.)

I guess we’re fortunate that the County of San Diego has a budget item for county libraries. As for me, I pay fines every long once in a while, so other than my tax money that is my financial contribution.

However, looking at the County budget, there really isn’t anything in their for acquisitions (the budget covers buildings, salaries, etc.) So I guess acquisitions are done by donation.

Just no. If he wanted the gig, he should have run against Hilary. He has never won a primary and never stood out from the others. I thought he was a reasonable VP but was very disappointed when his committee re gun controls got 100% nowhere. He continues to this day to talk about a bipartisan Senate which disappeared the day President Obama was elected.

Refrigerator trucks will be waiting at Changi Airport on Sunday to receive the cargo flight, Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper reported, saying the plane is believed to be carrying food items as well as several luxury cars to escort the North Korean leader.

The Il-76 cannot fly more than 3,000 km (1,860 miles) without refuelling if carrying a full load. It was expected to stop off at a friendly location on the way to Singapore, which is 4,700 km (2,920 miles) from Pyongyang’s Sunan airport, or fly with a reduced load.

The Il-76, originally designed for moving heavy machinery to remote parts of the Soviet Union, is big enough to fit a school bus or two shipping containers inside it, according to passenger and cargo flight operator Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions.

Aside from bringing Kim’s usual swag, maybe Kim’s gonna do some shopping while he’s in Singapore.

I’ve noticed that no-one has pointed out that Trump’s lies about the economy contradict each other. On the one hand, he claims we have the best economy ever, but on the other he claims the US is being robbed blind due to terrible trade deals. Foreign trade is such a big part of the economy that both of these claims can’t be true. So which is a lie? This is a trick question, since both claims are lies.

59
Dr Lizardo  Jun 10, 2018 • 2:33:01am

The fire rises.

Arron Banks met with officials between November 2015 and 2017, according to the documents.

Arron Banks, the millionaire businessman who bankrolled Nigel Farage’s campaign to quit the EU, had multiple meetings with Russian embassy officials in the run-up to the Brexit referendum, documents seen by the Observer suggest.

Banks, who gave £12m of services to the campaign, becoming the biggest donor in UK history, has repeatedly denied any involvement with Russian officials, or that Russian money played any part in the Brexit campaign. The Observer has seen documents which a senior Tory MP says, if correct, raise urgent and troubling questions about his relationship with the Russian government.

The communications suggest:

• Multiple meetings between the leaders of leave.eu and high-ranking Russian officials, from November 2015 to 2017.

• Two meetings in the week leave.eu launched its official campaign.

• An introduction to a Russian businessman, by the Russian ambassador, the day after leave.eu launched its campaign, who reportedly offered Banks a multibillion dollar opportunity to buy Russian goldmines.

• A trip to Moscow in February 2016 to meet key partners and financiers behind a gold project, including a Russian bank.

• Continued extensive contact in the run-up to the US election when Banks, his business partner and leave.eu spokesman Andy Wigmore, and Nigel Farage campaigned in the US to support Donald Trump’s candidacy.

And there’s more:

From November 2015, the ambassador, Alexander Yakovenko, courted Banks and Wigmore, inviting them to multiple events and meetings in the run-up to the European referendum, many of which, the documents suggest, they attended.

On 16 November, the documents suggest, Yakovenko invited them to an evening meeting at the Russian embassy. It is not clear if they attended but the next day, 17 November, leave.eu held its launch event - with Brittany Kaiser of Cambridge Analytica. And on 18 November, Banks and Wigmore again visited the embassy. On this occasion, the Russian ambassador introduced them to a Russian businessman with extensive business interests in Russian goldmines, according to documents seen by the Observer.

It is understood they were presented with a business opportunity in which they were offered a chance to invest in a plan to buy six Russian gold firms and merge them into a single entity, potentially netting a profit of several billion dollars.

Documents seen by the Observer suggest further meetings and discussions took place between the businessman and Banks and Wigmore, including a trip to Moscow in February 2016 during which Banks was scheduled to meet high-level officials from the state-owned bank.

And there’s this:

The invitations continued after the referendum during the time in which Banks, Wigmore and Farage began travelling regularly to America to support Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency, according to the documents.

Ambassador Yakovenko met Wigmore and Banks on 19 August, the day Steve Bannon became Trump’s campaign manager. It was days before they travelled to Mississippi with Nigel Farage for a rally on 25 August at which Donald Trump introduced him to the crowds as “Mr Brexit”. He said a Trump presidency would be “Brexit plus”.

And this, albeit from the Daily Mail:

Explosive new claims of Russian meddling in the Brexit referendum emerged last night as it was revealed that the millionaire who bankrolled the Leave campaign had a series of secret meetings with Vladimir Putin’s UK envoy.

Arron Banks had three meetings with Russian ambassador Alexander Yakovenko, fresh evidence shows, despite previously claiming to have had only a ‘boozy lunch’ with him.

Leaked emails written by Banks and his leave.eu right-hand-man Andy Wigmore - both close friends of ex-Ukip leader Nigel Farage - allegedly show they were in close contact with Russian officials throughout the referendum campaign and afterwards.

Former Ukip donor Mr Banks is also said to have given Russian officials telephone numbers for members of Donald Trump’s presidential transition team, just days after he and Mr Farage visited Trump Tower in the wake of the shock US election result.

More of the excellent stuff being put out by Carole Cadwalladr and the Observer/Guardian. Essentially, this fuck was bribed by the Russians to be the biggest financial supporter of Brexit. Which then ties right into the Trump campaign.

Now, if you’re Theresa May, presiding over a fractured government supposedly in charge of Brexit, which is turning into an increasingly obvious disaster now linked to Russian corruption and materially to the Trump campaign, and who could legally push the abort button at any time on this whole mess, you would do…what?

Thing is, I don’t know what the hell she’ll do. On one hand, preventing an enormous disaster; on the other, not admitting you were wrong. Unfortunately, with conservatives they mostly go with door #2.

Fun facts: The company that exports the most American-built cars (by value) isn’t Ford and it’s not General Motors. It is BMW. (see here: bmwusfactory.com) The world’s largest BMW manufacturing is in South Carolina.

Mercedes (Daimler) is also in the top five exporters of American-built cars; indeed, the world’s second largest Mercedes factory is in Alabama, and the majority of MBZ’s purchased in the US are built in the US by American workers.

As always, the problem is that Trump is fucking ignorant of the facts. He’s shooting off his mouth, attacking German car companies and saying they should “build their cars here”, entirely clueless to the simple fact that they already are among the largest manufacturers in the U.S.

I’ve commented before…Trump seems to be stuck in the time period of around 1980. His whole thinking and worldview is whatever was going on around that time.

This is where it is incumbent on his own party to call him out, but they are afraid to do so because elections are looming…

I think what accounts for a big part of the silence we’re witnessing from the GOP is that right now, it’s primary season and they’re especially sensitive to criticizing Trump because they are - quite bluntly - terrified of alienating their base.

It’s why they likely won’t turn on him before the November mid-terms, either; such a turn would cause the GOP base to sit out the mid-terms in protest. Trump still has high approval ratings with the base as well.

I wonder what TeaParty AstroTurf installer Dick Armey thinks of the can of wormy conservatives he opened with that mess? He helped get conservative money to those groups to get them rolling and they have rolled over the entire party.

I think it’s both. Honestly, and this is unfortunate but there’s people on both sides that don’t understand world commerce or accept the changes. Aside from providing a black and white world view, I think that’s the one other area where Sanderism can intersect with Trumpism.

Someone on CNN this morning said that Trump has been getting 2-hour-long briefings on NK every day for a couple of months. Either that’s true and the “I don’t need to prepare” was a way to prep for pretending he can pull things off sheerly through the force of his personality or it’s not true and he truly is unprepared. Either way, he’s greatly weakened by pushing allies away in Canada.

Trump won because of the Electoral system. Again, all he had to do was carry the states that the GOP carried in 2012 plus the Rust Belt states of MI, OH, WI and PA. He concentrated his efforts there and won those states by a thin margin, which gave him a victory despite a 3-million vote margin for the Democrats in the popular vote

I voted for him because I thought he was the better candidate.

One thing I’m going to say but I’m tired of the we need to understand Trump supporters. Was there anything at all on the right where they decided they needed to understand Obama voters or anything like that? No, they treated us with contempt. They accused us of voting for Obama just beacuse he was black. They accused us of wanting free stuff. But hey how dare those “liberal elites”, I hate that bullshit because the people who spread that bullshit are elites themselves point out that bigotry helped enable Trump’s rise.

The only understanding we need of them is politically tactical or strategic. How to marginalize them from the scene, political, social and especially cultural. They wanted a culture war, I’m not done till they cry.

Turns out the Chinese loaned out the very same 747 the Chinese government uses, much like our AF1. Some detail here at The Drive.

It’s also worth noting that all the aircraft took what appeared to be carefully planned routes that kept them over Chinese territory for the maximum amount of time, with the minimal amount of time over water or in international airspace.

Meanwhile, Air Force One (VC-25A) has taken an interesting route to Singapore as well, flying east across the Atlantic and making a fuel stop in Souda Bay, Greece. This direction is longer than the polar route but doesn’t fly over Russia and China. Currently Air Force One is somewhere near India on its final leg to Singapore.

oh

Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Iran Nuclear deal in a speech Sunday.

Putin said the United State’s withdrawal could “destabilize the region” in the middle east according to the Associated Press and added Russia will continue to honor the deal.

Trump announced the U.S. would leave what he called the “horrible” Iran nuclear accord in May. The agreement, put into place in 2015 under President Barack Obama, lifted international economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for the country to limit its nuclear program. Trump called the deal “defective at its core.”

Despite this, Putin also said Sunday he’s ready to meet with Trump, “as soon as the U.S. side is ready.”

Trump’s “Foreign Policy” since the beginning of his “reign (of terror)” has been to collect bribes. The bigger the bribe, the “better a friend” that country is. Jared’s official job title is “Lord High Collector Of Bribes”

Countries that refuse to give bribes get insulted on Twitter and slapped with tariffs on trade.

Qatar hesitated to pay the bribe (aka “protection money”) look what happened to them until they paid up.

China is exempt from the tariffs because ZTE paid the “protection money” & China paid the bribe in the form of trademarks for Ivanka.

How many emoluments crimes has the President committed already? Is there an online tracker somewhere?

Ah-yup. His time at Bain Capital secured that nice loathsome practice of buying companies and then bilking them dry due to “special dividends” the LBO firm demands on whom they take over - just look at Chrysler before they filed Chapter 11 - Cerberus Capital, who bought a huge stake in them, refused to spend one-red-cent on bailimg them out, claiming they had some special deal whereby Cerberus was prohibited from bailing out Chrysler when they were keel-hauled before Congress.

Just look at what fast Eddie Lampert is doing to Sears Holdings….

Possibly. But I think we have to impeach and convict Trump based on the evidence and not what we think Pence is going to do. Because to do otherwise means there’s no point in the laws, all a crazy person has to do is to have someone crazier as VP.

He voted for Trump after Trump mocked him for being a POW, and after Trump shit on a Gold Star family who dared to criticize him.

That is the mark of a spineless politician who puts party before country.

I know I’m being cynical, but I’d be willing to bet McCain would have voted to gut the ACA had Trump not insulted him. Also, how many other insane Trump-endorsed policies has McCain supported?

Sorry the guy is sick, but again; to think of him as someone willing to stand up to Trump is ridiculous.

The complicated business of politics is to negotiate agreements between groups with different interests, the object of finding a common way forward.

At present only one side buys into this premise. While the other does not market any notion of democratic participatory ‘politics’ but rather power, domination, and force of will. Authoritarian and dictatorial

politics is no longer a clash of value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world differently

It has it become, not even a conflict of interests, but instead a tribal, degenerative, brutal struggle for office in which ONE side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and can be capable of behaving despicably

McCain did vote to save the ACA; and he is definitely not a supporter of Trump’s FP. Given his illness, it’s not surprising his opposition has to be so limited. There is no excuse for any of the other GOP senators.

I thought his illness would free him up to be much more radically oppositional. What he’s doing is the same as he has done for years…being a fake maverick.

I’m not sure if I want to contemplate the idea of a Woke Jonah, because that means…jesus, I have no idea WHAT it means, just that it’s hella bad.

Jonah Goldberg is only upset that Trump isn’t using the regular racist and misogynistic dog-whistles of conservatives.

He would be just fine with any other Republican who did the same things without plain speaking about what conservatism really is.

Goldberg is not “woke.” He would be all-in if this was Pence instead.

Good point. That arguably can be cited as Ground Zero for the mess we’re in, as it’s basically when the Tea Baggers came slithering out from their whites-only rocks.

We’re going to be going to war with Canada soon, aren’t we? I don’t mean a trade war, I don’t mean even a cold war. We’re going to be sending troops over the northern border because Trump is a thin-skinned cretin and coward who is tantruming, aren’t we?

Just…holy sweet mother fuck. We’re actually accusing the leader of one of our longest term allies of ‘stabbing Trump in the back’? Fucking really?

re: #325 Backwoods_Sleuth

Long and enlightening thread:

He’s correct, both for the Navy and for the electorate.

There is no glory in getting out and doing the grunt work of uplifting others to get them elected, any more than there is uplifting your shipmates to help them advance to chief.

I took the chief’s exam three times, and made a perfect score each time. But all the chief’s exam does is put your record before the advancement board, where they look at all the other things you’ve done in your career. I did not advance to chief.

I did not blame others, or ask if there was a special trick. I worked harder. Maybe I would have made chief had I not been bounced out for epilepsy, maybe not.

But I damn sure knew I wouldn’t advance at all if I wasn’t working for the team.

Politics is like that. Waiting for someone to swoop in and do the work you should be doing, even when that work is not glorious or satisfying, will not get you a government which cares about you.
