Hate does not enter into it, but it will take us decades to fix the damage his administration is doing.

One should be careful around bats. Many bats carry rabies.

The case of the girl who survived rabies through experimental treatment came about because she wanted to shoo a bat out of a church and was bit.

My experience with bats indoors has been that they want to be there even less than I wanted them there.

I usually wait until they settle on something. (Usually they land on drapes.) I then wrap them up in a large thick towel, walk them outside, and release them.

And… its raining again here in the DC area. I guess we’re in for more flooding.

What he said. If rabies is endemic where you are, you need to get vaccinated ASAP (it’s nothing like what the treatment used to be).

ETA: even if you didn’t touch it while you were awake, check with your doctor to see what you need to do.

Elizabeth Warren Just Might Have a Shot at Re-election (Wonkette)

As for fundraising, Warren is exactly the big money draw you’d expect, and it’s not all just from national Dems who love love love her (which we do, of course). The vast majority of Warren’s donations are in amounts under $25, and in the first quarter of 2018, over 10,000 of her donors were right in Massachusetts, where gosh darn it, Democrats like her. She’s among the top fundraisers in the Senate, and well ahead of the Republicans who want to make her stop being so professor-y and liberal and not-Trump. Good luck with that, guys. Despite — or because of, really — Warren’s national profile and fundraising advantage, rightwing groups are expected to throw tons and tons of money into anti-Warren ads, because she is the Devil.

And oh, do they hate Elizabeth Warren. Money going into anti-Warren efforts this year may have less to do with defeating her in the Senate race than in trying out strategies to use against her if she runs for president in 2020. As is mandatory, Warren says she’s very happy as a senator. But the Rightwing Test Kitchen is already in action in Massachusetts: creepy Trumpster billionaire Robert Mercer is involved, funding a super PAC with the creative name “Massachusetts First.” That bunch sponsored this fun anti-Warren radio ad:

“Who is the real Elizabeth Warren?” growls a narrator, stating the opening gambit of what promises to be the GOP’s lead line of attack. “It’s hard to tell.” The ominous-sounding campaign ad, which began airing halfway through 2017, rebukes the first-term senator for making six figures at Harvard while students in the state accumulate debt. “Hypocrite professor Elizabeth Warren,” the voice-over concludes. “Huge salaries for her; rising costs and crushing debt for families and students like you.”

Just your normal everyday billionaire stirring up class resentments against someone who has literally made student debt and protection from financial vultures a focus of her career, even prior to her political career. While Massachusetts voters seem unlikely to dump Warren, the senate campaign seems a likely testing ground for whether messages like that can be scaled up for a national argument. (This Boston magazine article on Massachusetts 2018 as a proving ground for 2020 oppo and ratfucking is a darn good read!)

You’re lucky you were able to get it easily. The two times I’ve had to deal with a bat in the house, “capture” had to involve much effort with the swimming-pool net on a long pole, and a good deal of rather intemperate language. A lot of the latter directed at over-curious cats….

bat was fast asleep and clinging to a curtain, which made it a lot easier, otherwise I would have just opened windows, closed doors and let it find its way back out.

It is gone now.

still do not know how it got in. there is a hole in one of the screens, but I cannot imagine it crawling through…

It’s almost like most of them don’t anticipate free and fair elections…..and another faction is knowingly going all in with ideological purity….and another faction believes someone will save them from themselves (nope, it’s literally constitutionally on you) and another faction is just there being incapable on one hand and highly mediocre on the other.

Ignore my #77. I should have checked references first. Basques are still part of the dominant R1B European haplotype, but one study proposed that’s a result of admixture from Indo-European invaders.

80
freetoken  Jun 11, 2018 • 4:36:43am

“Cro-Magnon” is no longer a thing among human evolution and populations.

There has been much published the last few years about human migrations into Europe.

Western Eurasia has had multiple migrations from central Asia and from the Middle east.

All (pre-colonial) Europeans are pretty much the results of at least 4 major migrations and perhaps some smaller ones.

This ignores the small trickle of immigrants from Africa that came during ancient times (think Roman empire.)

a metaphor I’m working on: an elephant in a china shop (if only i could draw)

how the hell did it fit throught that door?
well the R-istocracy slathered butter on his sides
the media cut silhouette like shapes in the sides of the door and he slid through
the media then nailed boards over the cutouts - the patch job is not only cartoon obvious, they are standing there, saw and hammer behind the back whislting

inside, the elephant has no idea how he got there
doesnt know why he’s there
cant get out
and any movement of any kind breaks something

the shop owner looks up at the sky/ceiling/heaven, feeling powerless

im one of 300m odd shop owners - frustrated and mostly powerless
sure register, learn, read, vote

or bury my head in the sand and hold onto my sanity

novemeber is only a midterm

You’re lucky you were able to get it easily. The two times I’ve had to deal with a bat in the house, “capture” had to involve much effort with the swimming-pool net on a long pole, and a good deal of rather intemperate language. A lot of the latter directed at over-curious cats….

I once helped a friend move from a city apartment to a farmhouse way outside city limits.

When we were finished, well after dark, we were sitting on the back porch watching the bats go after the mosquitoes that were coming after us. His cat, an all black one named Diablo, was also watching the bats. The look on his face was, “I don’t know what they are, but I want one.”

My friend says to him, “Look, Diablo! The perfect cat food. Birds and mice in one convenient package.”

As referenced above, Kentucky voters willingly stripped themselves of the best ACA exchange in the country. People basically said, “When I get sick, I want it to be as difficult as possible to get health care.” All the evidence and proof in the world that this was a fucking insane idea didn’t mean shit to them.

In fact, the unpopularity of ACA was brought about by a steady stream of misinformation, and it’s getting more popular by the day as people get better acquainted with it. Even if your particular relatives happen to be part of the unmovable 20%.

They just need to combine that unmovable 20% with a gullible or poorly informed 31% and they have it nailed.

Tora! Tora! Tora! went out of its way to be accurate and even rebuilt old AT-6 trainers to resemble Japanese carrier planes.

But to me, taking an old US surplus tank and slapping a black cross on it and calling it a Tiger is like taking an old Dodge Duster, putting a Mercedes star on it and calling it an SLK roadster.

Kinji Fukasaku was one of the directors on the Japanese part of the film, along with Toshio Masuda.

Originally, the Japanese part of the film was supposed to be directed by Akira Kurosawa. He was replaced by the aforementioned two weeks into shooting.

Minoru Genda, the man who largely planned - and actually led - the Pearl Harbor raid, served as an uncredited technical adviser. That’s pretty damned impressive.

I enjoy Dirty Dozen and Kelly’s Heroes the most out of those movies because they did not take things too seriously. The fight between Oddball’s Sherman and the Tiger in the streets of the village? With a paint round in the 76mm? Classic.

Guns of Navarone was fun too if a bit more “straight” as was the long delayed sequel of Force 10 From Navarone. Oh, Where Eagles Dare as well :)

King of Cool but my favorite character is the late James Garner’s Hendley. Total wiseass and resourceful. But it’s a great cast all in all and it always stirs my imagination about what I would do if I were a captured airman during WWII behind enemy lines. I actually visited Colditz Castle this past summer. Amazing experience. Those guys were so brilliant. A lot of them got done in by sheer dumb luck. Clearly not every state. That’s the thing, it’s almost always in Dems’ best interests to ensure as many people as possible vote. Major blue states aren’t going to be pulling this shit. But GOP states, especially the swing states they control, will damn sure try to and ensure those states stay as immovably red as possible. And we can’t afford another Ohio to pull this shit. That’s why I’m worried about becoming institutionally fucked with more decisions and laws like this: it may lock us out with permanent consequences at this rate.

Someone must have watched Midway this weekend on AMC. It’s the exact same strategy (fake intelligence) used in the movie to determine the Imperial Navy was going to strike Midway.

In the European theater, they went so far as to mock up fake orders in the pocket of a dead body made to look like his parachute didn’t open.

And in Babylon 5, they sacrificed an entire warship and it’s crew so fake intel would be found on the computer.

Yes that is how it works. I believe the new law came about because the Republicans discoverer a lot of people that hadn’t voted within the time limit were not being dropped off the roles. They did the legislation to more or less make sure they are.

What I am hoping is enough people are aware of what is going on and check to see they are registered and if not, register again.

The Republicans know much of their voting block vote no matter what every major election so they are almost always registered and won’t be dropped.

Yeah, from what I saw in the opinions, if someone doesn’t vote, they get sent an address verification card (return postage prepaid), and if they fill it out and send it in, they’re good. If they don’t return it, they’re only dropped if they don’t vote at least once in the next four years.

I’ve only briefly skimmed the opinions, but this case seems closer than what a lot of people want to say it is. The system, at least in theory, has some solid guardrails on it. But like anything else, it can be used in an inappropriate way. It’s entirely possible that while the program is constitutional, it has been used in an unconstitutional way. One of those things people really need to learn in the Trump era - just because something is generally legal or lawful doesn’t mean it is so in all circumstances.

I’ll disagree: Kim has (pretty much) as much at stake on the PR front as Trump does. Remember, Kim heads a vicious totalitarian regime which has made his hellhole of a country an international rogue/pariah state since forever: the spectacle of him (a NoKo leader, finally, after sixty+ years) meeting in a one-on-one with a POTUS in a well-advertised summit is a prestige occurrence which he would be quite foolish to pass up. Regardless of what the Singapore Summit actually accomplishes, if anything. It makes little difference to Fat Kim what the folks at home think - they only see and hear what he wants them to, and love it (or else!). Yes, Trump has a lot on the line too (and at least 2/3 of a skeptical media at home ready to jump on any shortcomings of this long-touted meeting), but NK is in the position of reaping the bulk of the PR benefits, so I think it’s unlikely they’d want to cancel/bolt/fuck up the meeting too badly.

What I think is more likely, though, is a major nothingburger in terms of “results”: Trump and Kim will meet (with suitable photo-ops), trade translated banalities for a couple of hours, then leave (after more photo-ops) each claiming some sort of “victory” - and each side can go back to the status quo ante if need be.

Of course, It’s Trump and Kim Jong-Un: the whole thing could very easily blow up in a shitshow: we’ll just have to wait and see.

I always wonder how different things might have been in Ohio if Jennifer Brunner, who was a great SoS, had run for re-election for that office instead of running a losing campaign for a Senate seat. Ohio is a great example: although overall votes are split nearly 50-50 between Democrats and GOP, only 4 of the 16 Ohio Representatives are Democrats thanks to gerrymandering.

This is how the GOP stays in power and they know it.

For someone as image conscious as Trump, I’m really kind of amazed that this picture happened. Why is he the only person sitting down? Why does he have his arms folded? (I’d ask why he looks so smug, but we already know the answer to that question.)

I’ve seen a couple of others where he looks less petulant, but this one is just so jarring (whether or not it truly reflects what was happening).

What I wouldn’t give for something like this…

The arms-folded position is Trump’s “I’m not going to let anyone change my mind” position. I doubt he was even listening.

OT, but hey, we need a break.

I’ve been reading here and there that apparently, the Vallejo County Sheriff’s Department has sent DNA samples of the Zodiac Killer off for testing about a month or so ago. No doubt, they’re hoping to strike gold, like they did with the recently apprehended Golden State Killer.

Results could be known in as little as a few weeks.

Investigators searching for the Zodiac Killer have submitted evidence to a private DNA lab in the hopes of obtaining a genetic profile of one of California’s most elusive criminals — then tracking him down using the same kind of family-tree tracing recently used in the East Area Rapist case.

Vallejo police Detective Terry Poyser, who has worked the Zodiac case for four years, said his agency has submitted two envelopes that contained letters from the Zodiac Killer for a type of advanced DNA analysis that previously had not been available in the case.

Poyser declined to identify the lab, but said it would attempt to obtain a full DNA profile from saliva on the envelope flap and stamps. He said he expected to have results back from the lab as soon as in the next few weeks, and almost certainly by summer.

“They were confident they would be able to get something off it,” Poyser said.

If you take it for what it is, a romantic drama period piece that is technically well done, it’s a good movie. It’s just not great. Unfortunately hype causes the total opposite reaction sometimes. People seem to either love or hate movies and not realize there’s wiggle room in between. I’ll give an example, The Hoax, a Richard Gere movie about the Howard Hughes autobiography hoax, not a great movie by any means but it was entertaining and told a story about something I didn’t know too much about.

I have to give Cameron a lot of credit for his directing skills - even though, by all accounts, including his own, he’s a control freak on the set. But sometimes, that’s what it takes. (I’m looking at you, ghost of Stanley Kubrick).

He’s only one of three people who have been to the deepest point of the Earth, that’s amazing when you consider more people have been on the surface of the Moon than have visited Challenger Deep. It depends what you think makes a movie anyhow. Is it acting? is it story? Is it the technical aspects i.e. camera work? Etc. A lot of scholars say Citizen Kane is the best movie of all time but whlie I appreciate its technical brilliance, I can’t say I’ve ever really enjoyed the film and it’s not the film’s age. I enjoy plenty of movies from that era but C. Foster Kane just doesn’t interest me as a character the way say the Corleone family does. It’s all subjective though.

Speaking of high speed rail, last week I traveled between where I live in Zhengzhou to Xi’an 270 miles away in a matter of hours, without once needing a car or a bus. Walked about 15 minutes to the subway, spent an hour on the subway, walked from the subway right to the ticket office of the train station. About 2.5 hours on the train (top speed 193 mph), entered the Xi’an subway station at the train station, 20 minutes to the hotel — the subway station is next to the hotel. I left my flat around 11 am, reached my hotel room by 5 pm.

Total transportation cost was less than $40.

China’s tech is quite good. But the strings attached to their rail projects would give any intelligent government reason to pause. China expects its partners to toe the line when it comes to China’s geopolitical shenanigans. For example, Malaysia and Singapore would have to cut all diplomatic ties with Taiwan and agree to Chinese sovereignty over most of the South China Sea.

Japan would be a better partner for many reasons beside its technical expertise.

We need 21st century solutions for 21st century problems. Not to sound like a cliche but that’s what we need.

re: #304 wheat-dogg

China’s tech is quite good. But the strings attached to their rail projects would give any intelligent government reason to pause. China expects its partners to toe the line when it comes to China’s geopolitical shenanigans. For example, Malaysia and Singapore would have to cut all diplomatic ties with Taiwan and agree to Chinese sovereignty over most of the South China Sea.

Japan would be a better partner for many reasons beside its technical expertise.

Yup.

And no one ever brings up Japan’s past with Malaysia and Singapore the way its brought up in China and SK often.

Which is weird given how brutal imperial Japan was to British Malaya.

How about a reverse Laffer Curve? There is the idea that when taxes reach a certain rate, they are a disincentive to work harder.

Well, what if we knew that millionaires were paying up to 90% of their income and we worked harder to help them earn more and in doing so generate more taxes to build roads, schools and infrastructure for us all?

Exactly. That’s a new thing. Keep patriotism, a solemn and personal thing away from professional sports. If we must do this, let’s applaud our teachers and other people who make a difference in our lives too. I know, that’s the time needed for Kim to bribe him with a Trump hotel in the middle of Pyongyang! And Trump to agree to pull out all troops from SK in the next 3 months in exchange for a NK promise not to test any nuclear weapons in the next 6 months.

I’m going to love living in the Snow Crash universe.

Ah, the glorious dystopian future of Jennifer Government has arrived.

It’s like I’ve been saying for awhile, he’s going there with every expectation that the “deal” is already worked out, he’s just there to put his scrawl on it before grimacing for the cameras.

It’s fun to say that, but I’m pretty sure he was trying to be a tough guy for Kim, to show Kim he wouldn’t be a pushover. Instead, he’s shown that he’ll need a win, no matter what the cost.

I trust Japan a lot more than China when it comes to high speed rail expertise.

China’s high speed train system is reliable - they stole the technology from the very best.

This morning’s credit card processor sales phone call:

The sales people know. They don’t even try when they find out I know.

Credit cards suck for the businesses that accept them. Most of them can’t afford not to, due to consumer demand.

My favorite bar is cash only. He wants nothing to do with the card companies. He is also the most inexpensive bar in town for 6-packs to go or sitting there having a shot and beer.

Reminds me of a note left on the breakroom microwave one time. It said, “Turn off when finnish.”, and someone had written under that “Turn on when danish.”. Made me laugh.
