Pulling this over from the previous post to add some more funny.
The replies are great!

Also, I love Michelle Wolf! Glad I got introduced to her thru that funny WHCD tour de force.

Trump’s latest spelling gaffe reminded me of this, he might have seen it while he was researching strategic delivery systems.

Spelling is not the only thing wrong with this listing: It is under “science fiction” but the Thor missile was very real and fully operational. It was also the starting point for the long running Delta series of space launchers.

Anyone remember this “W” Bush Axis of Evil speech?

The Republicans and many others don’t.

They screwed up Iraq. Looks like they are gonna blow the deal with Iran. And, today Trump is making eyes with North Korea.

One of the key functions of a religion is to define your “in group”.

Thus for those who want to split from the SBC, or from the Baptist tradition in general, or from Christianity, one of the hardest hurdles is leaving your in-group.

I do wonder what Dubya and HW think of today’s fuckery.

I’m remembering things like that Axis speech and kinda looking at how I’ve recalibrated my responses to things and how I view our foreign policy now versus then.

So much has changed and that includes me. There are definitely plenty of constants there though. The GOP being what it is and all but so much is upside-down now too.

Very true. It’s just this specific religous tradition is awful. It’s one literally formed in defense of slavery. And their whole self congratulatory bullshit for praising MLK makes me ill. Wow it only took you guys 50 years after his death!

I think they’re probably as disgusted as we are. I mean as flawed as a President as GWB was, I do think he was coming from at least an educated opinion of the world around us. A way too hawkish IMO for me but not one based in ignorance and disdain for democratic allies in favor of hostile powers. Plus as obnoxious as I could sometimes find him, I don’t think he would ever complain about how hard the press is on him to a blood thirsty dictator. Bush’s sins are a different kind than Trump’s. He still should be remembered as a bad president but Trump’s in a league of his own.

I mean at least the Coalition of the Willing were Democratic allies. I hated how the Bush administration dismissed France and Germany’s criticisms of invading Iraq but Trump doesn’t value any of our allies. He values other countries with leaders like him who run their countries like him, nationalistic.

Here is a great summation I stumbled across on how so many different takes on the same political moment can be formed.

It is about Robert De Niro at last nights Emmy Awards and his short comment about Trump.

We discussed the Roseann and Sam Bee situations…now we have De Niro’s.

Everybody man your battle stations. In 3…2…1…Shoot!

TooFab - Robert De Niro’s ‘F-ck Trump’ Met With Media Backlash: ‘Helps Trump,’ ‘Lowlight of the Evening,’ ‘Gross’

A couple main sections from the link:

“What about the tone?” Kilmeade asked Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe. “Does this show he has a limited vocabulary if you don’t give him a script?”

“Absolutely,” she replied. “It just shows how feckless the resistance movement is. They offer no solutions, they offer no substance, and so what they do is resort to using the F-bomb and the C-word, like what we saw with Samantha Bee. I think it’s pathetic, and all it does is embolden President Trump and bring more people into his camp.”

Morning Joe

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” followed suit, with Joe Scarborough calling De Niro’s comment “the lowlight of the evening.” As he spoke, Mika Brzezinski shook her head in disapproval at De Niro.

“If people that applauded De Niro’s statement last night don’t understand that they are helping Donald Trump’s reelection every time they do something like that, they don’t understand,” Scarborough said, claiming that they were misunderstanding Michelle Obama’s “when they go low, we go high” for weakness.

“If your goal is to take down the president, it’s the wrong way to do it,” added MSNBC correspondent Kasie Hunt. You’re playing right into his hands in many ways.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle
The MSNBC anchor dove into the controversy Monday morning, and concluded that De Niro’s approach to bashing Trump is not very effective, even though she admitted she understands the president’s critics’ frustration and added, “I’m sure I shout some of those words in the shower.”

‘The View’
As expected, Meghan McCain came out swinging against De Niro on Monday morning during her daytime talk show’s Hot Topics discussion.

“I thought it was gross and I think that when you’re talking about how Trump is degrading our national discourse with his language, this is not the way to combat Trump,” she said

“It only helps him,” McCain continued. “You have Bill Maher over the weekend saying I think one way to get rid of Trump is crashing the economy, so please bring on the recession. Samantha Bee’s comments about Ivanka Trump, it rallies, it’s like a siren song for the right.”

You actually buy Trump’s fake piety. You call yourselves people of faith but you’re angry at DeNiro saying Fuck Trump and ignore and celebrate Ted Nugent telling Obama and HRC to suck his dick. Trumpism is a stain on this country and it’s going to take years to get rid of it. I don’t want to ever hear “This just makes them support him more.” If we’re too kind, we’re beta cucks, if we actually show the pig faced son of a bitch the same respect he shows us, it’s oh you made his supporters mad. Never saw these people crying about the way Obama was treated or the suggestions that we Obama voters just wanted free stuff or that Obama wasn’t a real American and that was spread by this very President. Fuck your feelings Trump supporters. Learn how to actually deal with having a President deserving of the hatred you gave the Obamas.

well, they decided to give a sexual assaulting Nazi enthusiast a pass and want to decry the outspoken celebs for saying what they mean because it doesn’t help the discourse. Maybe if they had been a tad more strident themselves, we wouldn’t have a pussy-grabbing Nazi sympathizer in office. Maybe they should save their fainting couch disdain for those GOP Senators who decry all of the shit going on in statements with mics on in front of them and vote for all of this heinous shit anyways…

Oh and Meaghan McCain can really shut up now about Samantha Bee. Has she forgotten her own Dad’s “joke” about Chelsea Clinton who was much younger and unlike Ivanka not involved in her father’s administration. I’m sorry her Dad is sick but Meghan crying about DeNiro and Bee while her Dad loudly called her own mom a c*** and made that joke is hypocrisy at its worst.

These guys can write it off as “just good old (frat) boys having some harmless fun” but putting it out in a public medium changes the whole thing.

Heck, I sometimes tell tasteless and offensive jokes, but I tell them in private and only around people who understand me and my sense of humor. And I would not be surprised if they offended people who did not. Which is why I keep them private in the first place.

I’ll just refer to my original reply. But enjoy your jokes.

A lot of humor goes around several corners to make a point. Recall that the original lyrics to the Beatles’ “Get Back” were directed at Pakistani immigrants…this was a satirical reaction to UK bigots like Enoch “Rivers of Blood” Powell. But the Beatles changed the lyrics because they understood that much of their audience would not get the nuance and take it as a literal attack on foreigners.

Was that PC self-censorship? No, it was just being a bit sensitive and aware of consequences, even unintended ones.

Recall that when Archie Bunker (based on a British TV character) makes fun of minorities, we are actually laughing at his bigotry, not the blacks or Asians…and when Brits make fun of Germans getting up early to reserve the sun beds at the resort, they are also making indirect fun of the fact that British tourists are too hung over to move before noon…

So this is NOT new- Summit agreement…. “Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” REAFFIRMING. TO WORK TOWARDS… This is an intention only.

…add this to the endless list of “Imagine their reaction if Obama had done this” moments…

re: #92 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

A lot of humor goes around several corners to make a point. Recall that the original lyrics to the Beatles’ “Get Back” were directed at Pakistani immigrants…this was a satirical reaction to UK bigots like Enoch Powell. But the Beatles changed the lyrics because they understood that much of their audience would not get the nuance and take it as a literal attack on foreigners.

Was that PC censorship? No, it was just being a bit sensitive and aware of consequences, even unintended ones.

Recall that when Archie Bunker (based on a British TV character) makes fun of minorities, we are actually laughing at his bigotry, not the blacks or Asians…and when Brits make fun of Germans getting up early to reserve the sun beds at the resort, they are also making indirect fun of the fact that British tourists are too hung over to move before noon…

I know satire. I know irony. I know subversive art. And I know justifying bigoted bullshit when I see it.

And I’m dismayed when those who are not the targets don’t loudly join in condemning this.

— “The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean peninsula.”

— “Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.”

Here’s a weird problem in an election.

Rep. Ron Estes (R, KS-4) has drawn a primary challenger. His challenger is named Ron Estes.

The Kansas Secretary of State office has decided to list Rep. Estes on the ballot as “Rep. Ron Estes,” which has drawn a protest from not-Rep. Estes.

He notes Kansas law prohibits listing an incumbent as such on a ballot, and putting Rep. on the ballot is the same thing.

His suggestion is to put Ron G. Estes (the representative) and Ron M. Estes (the challenger). If they won’t do that, list them as Rep. Ron Estes and “the Real Ron Estes.”

Many years ago, two men named Qualkenbush ran for the same office in Marin County. Even though they had differennt first names, distinguishing themselves was a big problem in that election.

Off-topic weirdness today:

The village clerk will leave the village board agenda and attachments in a plastic bag hung from my front door handle for the evening meeting.

So I go out today to look for it, not there. At the board meeting, she says she left it on the door.

So apparently someone stole my agenda packet.

Anyone who wants a copy of the agenda can get it from the village clerk; these aren’t secret papers or anything, and I only live a block from the village hall.

So, just lazy, or is someone trying to “own the lib?” I can’t figure out why someone would take it from my door … biggest crime in town all year.

I can see China working with South Korea to turn North Korea into a new development project, sort of what China was two decades ago. And the US will see nothing out of it but more consumer goods that our people can stock and sell at Wal-Mart for sub-poverty-level wages subsidized by SNAP payments.

That’s entirely possible. China and South Korea have very cordial relations and their economies are interdependent. Having the USA butt out of East Asia may end up helping North Koreans, once the Kim dynasty is deposed. Until then, I doubt the average N Korean is going to see much benefit.

Call it out for the puppet show it is, and hold the media to task for normalizing it and pretending it’s somehow a grand great achievement despite nothing gained and everything lost. Call it out for extending a peace offering to an unrepentant dictator while claiming our most stalwart allies ‘stabbed us in the back’ for even tepid trade clarification (not even concessions, clarifications).

Call. This. Shit. Out.

Can’t help but wonder if the South Koreans are digging through some history books regarding the Munich Conference.

Fun fact: The Munich Agreement, which Chamberlain agreed to along with Daladier of France, was actually the same as German terms regarding the Sudetenland which they’d both rejected previously.

The difference this time - Hitler had Mussolini propose it as his idea at Munich, and because Mussolini could speak both English and French (as well as German) and was able to present it in their languages, suddenly it all seemed quite reasonable to Chamberlain and Daladier.

Oops.

And Trump is a whole lot less bright than either Chamberlain or Daladier (hell, I’d put Trump on par with von Ribbentrop - a “fatuous, dirty little champagne salesman”, as Goering once called him).

I think the analysis of this horrible deal is going to wear the shine off of Trump’s stupid photo op pretty quick. People who have dealt with North Korea in the past know exactly how badly Trump screwed the pooch here.

This feels like the Agreed Framework of the 90s all over again. NK gave its word to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons. They never intended to keep their word. And then they broke it.

No, you lying fucknugget! NK was free to do whatever they wanted after BUSH RENEGED ON THE AGREED FRAMEWORK!!!!!!!!!

I’m not sure about that. They seem to be far more worried about kicking out the ‘wrong’ kind of people en masse. They don’t seem to be too worried about folks voluntarily leaving. I’d be more worried about folks, even with the right passports and everything, not being allowed back in once they come back.

On this day in history
Year 28 Gaius Carrinas’ triumphant procession through Rome. (Who could forget that?)
1665 England installs a municipal government in New York City
1775 1st naval battle of Revolution-Unity (US) captures Margaretta (Br)
1859 Comstock Silver Lode in Nevada discovered, first major silver discovery in the US

And today we got to see the scope of Donald Trumps abject failure in Singapore. Two dictators performing a choreographed shell game.

Within a month, Trump pulled the US out of a 159-page detailed arms control agreement with intrusive verifiability with Iran and signed a short, ambiguous, and concessionary declaration with North Korea.

buried in the story of “Trump to Suspend Military Exercises on Korean Peninsula” and getting nothing in return for it is this:

Mr. Trump, who was a developer before he became president, focused on one particular economic prospect for North Korea: real estate.

“As an example, they have great beaches,” he said during a news conference after his meeting with Mr. Kim. “You see that whenever they’re exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said, ‘Boy, look at that view. Wouldn’t that make a great condo?’”

“You could have the best hotels in the world right there,” Mr. Trump continued. “Think of it from a real estate perspective. You have South Korea, you have China and they own the land in the middle. How bad is that, right? It’s great.”

I still contend that Reagan got lucky by having Gorbachev as his counterpart. God I’m going to give Nixon credit here but Nixon negotiating SALT with Brezhnev was more impressive. If Reagan had to deal with Khrushchev,, Brezhnev, Andropov, or even the forgotten General Secretary- Cherenenko. History may have turned out differently. I for one am glad it did but I think Reagan got very lucky by who his counterpart was. And I don’t think his successor gets enough credit either. Bush I not Reagan is the better President.

This is why I have a dash camera in my company vehicle.

Charges were dropped against a man accused of hurting two women in a horrific road-rage attack after Oregon prosecutors found too many holes in the victims’ stories — and that they had a history of apparently faking injuries in other vehicular incidents.

Jay Allen Barbeau, 49, was arrested June 1 after Megan Stackhouse, 34, and her fiancée, Lucinda Mann, 26, told officers in Bend that he attacked them after their Kia Soul cut him off in traffic. Stackhouse had claimed that she pulled over to let Barbeau pass them, but the imposing, 5-foot-8, 245-pound man instead smashed their rear window before breaking Stackhouse’s arm and knocking Mann unconscious.

In a way, I’m almost glad that hatred within religions blinds people to their common prejudices because of that. If the American Christian Right knew how much fanatical Muslims share their homophobia, sexism, and in some cases racism, they’d be in heaven.

On a more temperate note, a lot of Latinos are devoutly Christian and socially conservative. But the GOP goes out of its way to alienate them.

Of course, they believe in true family values; strong families, strong communities, good schools, affordable higher education and civic institutions that serve people over business interests…all things that cost tax money.

Another issue with Islam is that we in America tend to look on Saudi Arabia as representative of moderate Islam because they are our economic and political allies.

But scratch below the surface and you find a repressive feudal monarchy that promotes Wahabism, one of the most virulent strains of Islamist thought, and a country that gave us both Bin Laden and 15 of the 19 9/11 attackers.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump met Jong Un.

So that happened.

Historic. Yes. We get that. No American president has met with a democidal dictator in decades, and yet Trump was fawning all over Jong Un ignoring the damage that this does to nuclear nonproliferation efforts worldwide.

Trump thinks that this is great. It might be great for Trump, but it’s awful to everyone else. It signals that every rogue nation benefits from having nuclear blackmail, and that is taken to the next level by Trump’s insistence that the JCPOA with Iran is awful and should be scrapped.

Iran doesn’t have nuclear weapons thanks to the JCPOA. North Korea has nukes because they refuse to engage in any deal. North Korea got parity with the US on the international stage because of their bellicosity and nuclear blackmail.

What did Trump get? A photo op.

The memo of understanding is a wish list that is incomplete because Trump was more interested in the photo ops than doing the hard work of diplomacy.

Our regional allies see their security undermined by Trump and South Korea is trying to walk the razor’s edge in sucking up to Trump while trying to reconcile fact that Trump’s leaving a leadership and power vacuum that China, Russia, and even North Korea are happy to fill. US leadership is vanishing at a frightening clip and Trump thinks it grand.

The GOP thinks it grand too. All their talk about being America First shows that they prefer America alone - the isolationist bent comes to the forefront, and America Alone means a poorer America where international trade is disrupted because Trump starts trade wars with our allies and Trump furthers the positions of our enemies and rivals.

Which of course, according to a non-trivial segment of wingnuts out there, is entirely Barack Obama’s fault for “cutting and running” from Iraq in ‘09, when it’s obvious that if we had maintained our beneficent occupation deployment in Iraq, neither ISIL or AlQ would have dared cause any trouble…. anywhere, ever. Hello from Los Angeles. Today is my 58th birthday. Been a few places seen a few things. But nothin like these days we have under the xenophobic Trump regime. .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, UD!

Celebrate with a Brent’s Black Pastrami Reuben!

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Mikhail Gorbachev (when I was working for a Senator) when he spoke at the University of Wyoming. He gave quite possibly one of the best speeches/presentations I’ve seen. His mind was very sharp and he just kept talking and talking and talking until his daughter kindly told him to wrap it up.

In short he said that RR didn’t really cause the collapse of the USSR - that USSR was already in dire straights and was heading for collapse. Thus RR being lucky is quite correct. Gorbachev went in great detail in how it all happened. I have a recording of the speech he gave somewhere - I had a pocket recorder in my breast pocket - though I’ve moved a few times since and would need to find it.

I’m concerned that Jennifer Rubin might not ever be accepted back into the Republican fold.

Trump’s impulsive decision to have a summit and his insatiable need for attention provided Kim with a historic victory that no other U.S. president has handed to a North Korean leader. With not a single bomb dismantled or a single gram of fissile material shipped out of the country, Kim got more than he could have dreamed of — and all before the photographers departed…

This is what happens when one puts a man-child who imagines that characters such as Kim or Chinese President Xi Jinping are his “friends” or “like him” in a room alone with one of them…

he president of the United States was fleeced, and worse, has no doubt impressed upon Kim that this country can be played for fools and strung along. Trump gave Kim newfound legitimacy and Kim’s nuclear weapons program can go on and on…

washingtonpost.com

Closer to home—can I just say that I am so fucking sick of robocalls, I can’t wait till today’s primary is over. Oddly, I’m even getting more from Republicans than Democrats (including having to hear the fucking yam’s blathering about his buddy, Henry McMaster.) The robos used to usually disconnect when you didn’t answer, but now they leave voicemails—since last night at 9 pm, I’ve received 9 robocalls—3 from McMaster; 3 from Templeton; one each from 2 of the Dem governor candidates and one from the Dem House candidate. Arggghh. I like to vote late afternoon, so I can see how the traffic’s going in my precinct.

Now I guess he can turn to threatening a war with Iran where he tore up an actual verifiable agreement which was working, because “fuck Obama.”

Goes a bit beyond that, I think.

But here is another point: Obama could have been held up by Conservatives as proof that Race is no longer an issue in America, as proof of the American Dream that anybody who works hard enough can rise to the highest office in the land regardless of their background.

But that would have involved acknowledging, however grudgingly, what he had accomplished in his career. And they just could not bring themselves to do that.

So instead he was made out to be an affirmative action baby, a crypto-Muslim foreign-born Manchurian candidate who bought his way into office by offering free stuff and stuffing ballot boxes.

re: #429 Scottish Dragon

Y’now, while “STFU, Bernie” is a generally useful rejoinder to most things, he does raise an issue in this tweet that seems to have been generally overlooked: while the hardcore Trumprrhoids and their media enablers want to make the whole Korean thing solely a matter of Executive Authority (i.e. Trump’s whims), Congress might have something to say. Even if, say, Bernie Sanders (or someone) does to Trump re NK like Sen. Cotton did to Obama re Iran, it will at least force a debate. And hopefully, more.

Two thoughts:

Everything faded into mist. The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.--1984

In North Korea, every person is property and is owned by a small and mad family with hereditary power. Every minute of every day, as far as regimentation can assure the fact, is spent in absolute subjection and serfdom. The private life has been entirely abolished. One tries to avoid cliché, and I did my best on a visit to this terrifying country in the year 2000, but George Orwell’s 1984 was published at about the time that Kim Il-sung set up his system, and it really is as if he got hold of an early copy of the novel and used it as a blueprint.
