I don’t care how cranky @SecPompeo gets, there is a problem when he says one thing and the North Koreans say another. Are we lifting sanctions in a step-by-step manner or not? You said no, the North Koreans said yes.

there is a problem when he wont answer a simple, direct, non-gotcha question that is part of his effing job

Trump is starting to cut Pompeo off at the knees just like he did Tillerson. Hard to like your job much when your boss never tells you what the fuck is happening until it already has.

So funny to watch the Fake News, especially NBC and CNN. They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea. 500 days ago they would have “begged” for this deal-looked like war would break out. Our Country’s biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!

— Donald J. Trump

Can you give some details about this “deal”?

That’s what happens when you have an “I can do all this better than anyone” president.

I still think Trump’s arrogance is going to be his downfall.

He’s going to let his pompous ass walk him right into a mess even the do-nothing congress will be forced to do something about.

In a way, I sometimes wonder if that isn’t really man-of-little spine McConnell is hoping occurs. Politically that keeps McConnell free from criticism if he lets Trump screw up so bad there will be a groundswell to force him out.

Sure, that is a big gamble for America, but when has McConnell really been all that concerned about America?

The legislative portion of the leg work starts this election cycle. Assuming Trump doesn’t find a way to fuck it up, the census happens in 2020, new lines will be drawn for 2022. So 2018 and 2020 are incredibly important elections, even if Democrats can’t win majorities, the more seats they hold, the better chances they have to draw more competitive districts both in Congress and the state legislatures.

AT EVERY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT.

If you can win back control in state legislatures, the more likely districts will be drawn that are nonpartisan, or at least less gerrymandered. It means that Democrats will have a better say in how the districts are drawn.

At the federal level, the Democrats have to make sure that the census gets the proper funding and that Trump’s white nationalist policies don’t interfere in counting all Americans and counting all those who are here.

Sure, but I’m 40 and I remember Trump being famous in the 80s - Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and that sort of bullshit. It’s a possibility, but I’m skeptical because it’s not the sort of thing they’ve done before in this case. More likely someone misread the file name when using PACER to efile and filed the unredacted version that was supposed to be hand delivered/filed under seal. Sure, but I’m 40 and I remember Trump being famous in the 80s - Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and that sort of bullshit. Even before the Apprentice he had name recognition above 80%, I’d guess - and that’s probably part of the reason he got the role on the Apprentice, he had the image of “successful businessperson.”

He did have fame, but it was of a minor, reality TV level fame. Much like Snooki, I knew his name, but at no point during an average month did I think about him in any way. I want the world back where I never have to think about Donald Trump at all, and where this miserable, disgusting man has no impact on my life or my thought process. The crazy homeless people I walk by on the street are better examples of humanity. I fear, however, that given the power of US media and culture in the world, and the fact that he now represents American culture, that such a world will never happen again. Even after he dies.

They dressed like Mods, but they were Rockers. I saw them 3 time at the Spectrum. Tore the roof off every time. Rod was a great showman and Ronnie was just a killer guitar player. I love open E tuning. That’s about all Derek Trucks uses.

I saw them at the Factory when Rod was still trying to overcome his shyness. Not with the Beck Group, but the first time I saw them Rod sang the first two songs from behind the backline.

He overcame that shyness pretty completely, though.

The Who and The Kinks were Mods too. Just sayin’.

Saw Rod and the Faces at St. John’s arena on the Ohio State campus back in ‘73 or so. Would have loved to see them in a smaller venue.

Naw he was super famous. Very well known buildings with his name on them. Casinos that held big events. Golf courses. His forays into pro football and branding with other sports. High profile relationship with pro wrestling. The books. Tons of TV and movie cameos as well as hip hop songs and videos.

Presidencies come and go. But as we’ve seen, this one is treated differently from all other presidents. He is treated differently precisely because he represents American culture. Even after he leaves office, he will be the most important person in the world to US mass media, and, for the next few generations all future Republican candidates for any office will be scrutinised for comparisons to Trump, much as invoking the name of Reagan used to be the Republican sign of fealty.

Trump managed to keep his name in the media from the late 70s on. He became a joke in the mid 90s due to his casinos failing. NBC made him “successful” again.

I cannot access LGF on my Suddenlink (desktop) connection. It crawls loading and cannot keep up with an obnoxious barrage of video ads. The latest is from Dairy Queen of Texas, so dense that the ad plays only in spurts, like a redneck Maxx Headroom. The site itself jams completely and cannot be scrolled. These problems largely disappear when I turn off Suddenlink and switch to Sprint phone wifi. Problem is, Sprint WiFi hotspot is limited to 10 gigs/month, though phone data itself is unlimited. Similar problems with Amazon and a few other sites. Walmart and some other biggies are faster than ever.

If I’m watching a TV show or movie and there’s a guitar in the background, I strain my eyes trying to identify it. If there’s a band playing, I try to take note of all the gear they’re using.

I understand. I used to sketch bands and all their equipment, PA systems, etc. back in high school. I had it bad. We went to concerts early so we could sneak up by the stage acting like we were looking for our seats so we could check out all the gear.

My buddy that I jam with on Fridays and I are always looking at guitars, amps and stuff in videos, pictures, etc.

I think Prohibition had more to do with a strain of Protestantism that saw drunkenness as a grave sin. There was also a strain of Progressivism that saw it as generally bad for society, in part because saloons had political influence back then.

There might have been some nativism, particularly anti-Irish bias. But I don’t think it was much of a driving force.

And Organized Crime was more a result of Italian immigration, than anything else. They basically just brought their old world system to the new world.

Corey Stewart? Oh yes. Virginia needs a Senator who isn’t over April 1865 that much. Dude you’re from Minnesota. Home of the 1st Minnesota who fought bravely at Gettysburg and Albert Woolson, the last confirmed Civil War vet. We as Virginians have many heroes- George Marshall comes to mind, Oliver Hill is another, & yes Winifield Scott and George Thomas who chose nation during the dark hours of 1861 over slavery and secession. That’s what Stewart could be proud but he thinks by being a carpetbagging pandering ass is the way to govern in my Virginia. My Virginia is home to families that can go back to Jamestown but also those who have more recently started calling it home. Honey ham and pupaserias together side by side.

Trump’s new Health and Human Services Secretary?
Dennis Hof, brothel owner and pimp, wins Nevada GOP primary

Pimp Dennis Hof, the owner of half a dozen legal brothels in Nevada and star of the HBO adult reality series “Cathouse,” won a Republican primary for the state Legislature on Tuesday, ousting a three-term lawmaker.

Hof defeated hospital executive James Oscarson. He’ll face Democrat Lesia Romanov in November, and will be the favored candidate in the Republican-leaning Assembly district.

Hof celebrated his win at a party in Pahrump with Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss at his side.

The Pride parade is this Saturday. It’s Pride weekend in Columbus. That is going to bring out the crazies too. They always show up and tell everyone they are going to hell.

Since it is Trump times I imagine it is going to be even more wild.

I sent a rant this morning to Jeff Flake (I know I’m not in his state) suggesting that if he had any decency he would caucus with the Democrats. Maybe I’ll do the same for Corker.

re: #77 ObserverArt

Ha…you said decency and associated it to Jeff Flake.

He hasn’t shown any decency or courage yet. I think the past year shows he won’t any time soon. Nor will Corker. They represent Red states and are scared of their own constituents.

Corker might be retiring, but he’s still trying to be a faithful GOPer to keep the seat “in the family”; by talking shit about Trump and Trump’s hangers-on, while still actually doing things that still support the administration’s goals (which is, basically, “fuck Obama” and being as evil as possible while going about it), Corker’s trying to save his seat from getting taken by former Nashville mayor and former governor (two terms each) Phil Bredesen (who is still very popular, even after being out of the governor’s mansion seven years) over the TN TPGOP’s preferred candidate, current 7th District Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R - AT&T and Comcast).

Corker, for all of the noise and fury he’s making, has made sure he’s gotten his through that sham of a tax “reform” bill, so he’s bailing before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds that six months after the passage of tax reform, it’s still not really catching on with voters. Just 31% support it to 38% who are opposed, with 30% not sure one way or the other.

The core problem for Republicans with tax reform is that voters continue to be skeptical it’s actually going to help them on a personal level.

I used to work with a guy who, day of show, got front row tickets to the Who at the Spectrum. I think it was for Who’s Next, but that’s a guess. It was that early 70’s era when they firing on all cylinders.

My father was USAF during Korea.
His parents have been dead for 40 years.
He’s been dead since 2009.

My husband was in the Navy during the Korean War. His father died at 79 in 1979 and his mother lived to be 100, dying in 2002. He went into the Navy straight out of college, so could have been 4 years older than some. He died in 2016 at 88.

Hitler was a genius compared to Trump. Trump came to power because this country is full of really stupid people and a totally corrupt media.

If you notice, I was not really comparing Trump to Hitler.

I was pointing out how others allowed Trump. That is the real comparison.

Same as they allowed Hitler in Germany.

This shelter, Casa Padre, is the largest licensed childcare facility of its kind in the country. Nearly 1,500 boys 10-17 in here now. They’re supposed to sleep four to room. Nearly every room has 5. They’ve received a variance from the state because of overcrowding

Since we can’t adhere to the regulations we get to ignore them

The special counsel’s ongoing questions about Cohen’s activities indicate that Mueller remains intently focused on Trump’s attorney, even after referring a separate probe into Cohen’s business practices to federal prosecutors in Manhattan months ago.

The dual investigations of Cohen are fueling anxiety inside the White House. After working for a decade as Trump’s personal attorney, Cohen has extensive knowledge of the president’s personal dealings and the Trump family business.

The president’s allies are worried that prosecutors in Manhattan are attempting to build a criminal case against Cohen to push him to cooperate with the special-counsel probe — a prospect they see as potentially dire.

For his part, the Trump attorney has been frustrated by the lack of outreach by the president, whom Cohen has vowed to defend, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Cohen, who is now in a dispute with his attorneys about some of his legal bills, plans to seek new representation soon, the people said. He wants to find a New York lawyer more familiar with the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, they said.

Cohen declined to comment, referring questions to the attorney currently leading his defense, Stephen Ryan. Ryan, a Washington-based criminal defense lawyer who has represented Cohen in both of the federal investigations, did not respond to requests for comment.

Allow doesn’t mean how Trump got there. The people that voted for Trump have plenty of Trump “politics” to know he is bad. They are not turning against him and allow him to keep enough of a base to scare his party into inaction.

The people of Germany saw enough of Hitler to know what he was doing. They sure didn’t do much to remove him. They too bought in which allowed it to get to where Hitler got.

You are correct about the actual process of how each came to power. I’m talking about how people allow them to stay in power.

“‘Ello there, Missus Bobbett…”

///

I worked with a guy named John Wayne Bobbitt (not the infamous one). People made his life totally miserable after the Bobbitt incident. Several shock jocks called his home and harassed his wife for laughs. He told horror stories about experiences trying to make reservations, order food or a service, etc. because as soon as he said his name they’d treat him as a prankster and refuse to take him seriously. The worst thing was being called by name in public. Always got him lots of curious looks and snickering. Poor guy.

The headline is big, but what’s bigger is what leads to it:

Trump then went on to say that he would be able to get Putin to listen to him simply by asking the Russian president to “do him a favor” and stop invading other countries.

“I’m not for Russia, I’m for the United States, but as an example example, if Vladimir Putin were sitting next to me today instead of one of the others and we were having dinner the other night in Canada I could say, ‘Would you do me a favor? Would you get out of Syria? Would you do me a favor, would you get out of Ukraine?’” Trump said.

It is unclear why Trump has not asked the Russian leader to “get out of Syria” or “get out of Crimea.” Indeed, Trump has also not asked Putin to stop trying to infiltrate the 2018 midterm election.

A bigger thing I think is being missed when discussing this “agreement”: Nowhere in it does the word “sanctions” appear or link “denuclearization” to the scaling back of sanctions on NK. So already Donny has set the stage for Beijing and Moscow to argue for dismantling the sanctions because of NK’s “progress” towards peace.

The Bush years upset me greatly, but then Obama was elected. I was so happy the country was getting back on course. Now we will never be back on course. I don’t know what we will become, but we will never, in my lifetime be the country I hoped we would be.

We are going to have to enact systemic change. That means digging deep down and getting into the guts of what constitutes power. Example:

Back in the 80s, rich Republicans realized that their policies were directly opposite to the will of the middle class. So they weren’t going to win on ideas. But luckily the Reagan years proved that if you had enough TV advertising you could sell any sort of sham to the American people. But that just gets you into an arms race with the other side, which can get expensive, and do not forget, these rich fucks do love their money.

Thus: how to Democrats get their money? From unions.

Cool, cool. Guess we gotta destroy the unions then.

Flash-forward to Wisconsin and Derpmaster Gov. Scott Walker ripping the guts out of teachers unions to finish the de-unionization of a once-progressive state.

It is one that I struggle with every day.

I’m not one for organized religion (shorter take: our parish priest did 3 years in state prison for what he did to us, which the church knew about), but I do occasionally go to Agape, and the Rev. there had a sermon that stuck with me.

The subject was “Identity Theft.”

Meh, I thought. How much of a big deal is it to have someone swipe your credit card numbers of social security number? Surely quite annoying and costly, but not really an “immortal soul-type” issue.

But it was. The construct goes this way:

When someone acts in such an infuriating, ugly, awful way as to drive you into hate, fury and nonstop rage … then you are no longer yourself.

You are the victim of Identity Theft. Someone has stolen away the essence of the kind, caring and gentle person you are, and replaced that with this furious, depressed person who lashes out and spreads misery.

Resist Identity Theft. Be who you are. Do not be a mirror to what you see.

I’ll do the math for you.
You kind of have to assume that Korean War soldier’s parents were at least about 35 in 1953.
That makes the parent approximately 100 years old right now.

If they were 35 in 1953, they were having children when they were 17. I know too many in the US do this but the majority of Korean War parents would have been born well over 100 years ago - many in the 19th century.

We’ll get back on course. It’s the old three steps forward, two steps back of liberals versus conservatives.

As someone noted above, it was those who abdicated their civic responsibility (those who didn’t vote or voted for a third candidate) who brought this about, not conservatives.

Those are the people to reach in this election. There is always a crazification factor of conservatives in every nation. They can be counted to vote for a cardboard cutout with the right letter after its name. Those who think “this won’t or doesn’t affect me” are the ones who need to be reached.

And if the press won’t report on Democratic positions or policies? That’s why candidates need to go to the people directly. When a candidate shows up for a speech or a town hall, local media will cover it, even if national media won’t. (It’s a big deal when a candidate shows up for an event around here; it had been decades since a state governor had been to this part of the state, and when he came to my town to view the eclipse and leave, he got days of coverage.)

You’re not to blame. Beyond voting, supporting candidates and encouraging others to vote, not sure what else we can do to resist.

Was just reading on Joe My God that 20% of LGBTs didn’t vote in 2016. It’s sad when those of us who are targeted by the Rightwing don’t get off our butts and vote like our lives depend on it.

Voting will not be enough anymore. Enormous, sustained protest and civil disobedience will be required.

That’s why I get a bit insulted when my group, the Baby Boomers, catch so much shit from the “yoots” in the Democratic Party. It’s all “step aside and let us run the show.” But, when push comes to shove, we’re the ones who show up most consistently.

And we’ll be dead and gone before the worst of the shit comes down—we’re not doing it for ourselves, but for their future. We would be glad to step back and support them, but, at least in my experience locally, they want to run their mouths more than anything else.

One example—I’ve been president of our Dem Women’s group for five years. Not because I really want to be, but because nobody will step up. We do a survey asking what our members want the group to do, what they’d like to do personally, and if they’d consider being an officer. Not a single person has answered yes to that last question.

And we go out of our way to reach out to the young women to join and what did they do? They scheduled their “Young Democrats” meeting on the same night as our meeting.

I’m so impressed with the Parkland kids—they are truly putting their money/time/effort where their mouths are. They’re coming to South Carolina and somebody in my age group asked a local group of youngs how we can support them (money? lodging? whatever.) We were told to step aside and let the young people take care of coordinating their visit. Thus far, haven’t heard another word about it.

I won’t stop, but it does get discouraging.
