Among the more obnoxious things I’ve read in the wake of Anthony Bourdain’s death is that if only he had been a man of faith, he wouldn’t have taken his own life. Consider the almost sneering commentary offered by Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, in a syndicated piece written less than a day after the rogue chef’s body was found hanging by the belt of his bathrobe in a Strasbourg hotel room. “If Anthony Bourdain had been a religious man, would he have killed himself? Probably not,” writes Donohue. “Bourdain was raised by his Catholic father and Jewish mother, though neither of them saw fit to raise him any religion … [Bourdain] said his views of religion were similar to those expressed by Christopher Hitchens, the British atheist. This is why the atheist organization, Freedom from Religion, was so proud of him.”
Not only is the tenor of Donohue’s sentiment completely tone-deaf and insensitive, his claim that Bourdain—or, for that matter, any other atheist suicide victim—could have been saved by religion is presumptuous and misleading. In his unabashed efforts to show why Catholicism is superior to other religions (he touts his book The Catholic Advantage while writing about Bourdain’s suicide), Donahue points out that regular churchgoers are less likely to kill themselves. He’s right. But it turns out it’s a little more complicated than Donahue would have us believe. The church buffering effect against suicide that he’s alluding to, in fact, has almost nothing to do with faith. Rather, the correlation comes from churchgoers being part of an active community, one with formal rituals encouraging social engagement and regulated moral support. It’s what’s known as the “network theory” of religion and suicide, first articulated by Émile Durkheim in the late 19th century. In his famous treatise Suicide (1897), Durkheim reported that, despite their matched religiosity, Protestants were more likely to take their own lives than Catholics, a puzzling observation given that suicide is proscribed in both forms of Christianity. This general trend—that it is church attendance, not simply religion, that protects people against suicide—has been found in study after study ever since. So, when Donahue writes that “those who are regular churchgoers have a much lower rate of suicide than atheists like Bourdain,” he’s conflating (and I suspect deliberately so) religious behavior and theism.

The issue is conservatives. They’ve courted it all my life. I have never witnessed a Republican Party that didn’t support racism.
Some will ignore it (except when courting votes), some will try to claim both-siderism, but no Republican politician doesn’t understand, not in my nearly sixty years.
The only thing they’re upset about is Trump stripping their dog whistles and running out in the open on what they also ran on in coded language.
By doing that, it exposes the whole GOP for what they really have been for the past sixty years: The party of Jim Crow, the party of apartheid, the party of racism.
Some of their voters may not understand it (buying the lines of “family values” or “fiscal conservatism”) but not the politicians. Steve King of Iowa was in office long before Trump. So was Jesse Helms.

That was the GOP strategy that put them over the top in 2016; They knew that Hillary was not going to motivate a lot of people to vote. They knew they could count on their 30% base to get to the polls, and just needed to get another 20% of voters to hate Hillary enough to go along.
And they knew that they just had to carry the states they carried in 2012 (no problem wit that) and concentrate their efforts on the Rust Belt: OH, PA, MI and WI.
That gave them the Electoral votes they needed without needing Florida.
I hate to say it, but Michael Moore had that figured out in the summer of 2016. I ignored him at the time as I always found him a bit of a gadfly, but he was spot-on with that analysis and prediction.

But she’s lost access to two supermarkets and 10% of the nice restaurants she was used to patronising herself.

Eighteen states allow parents to opt their children out of school immunization requirements for nonmedical reasons, with exemptions for religious or philosophical beliefs. And in two-thirds of those states, a comprehensive new analysis finds a rising number of kindergartners who have not been vaccinated.
In a report published Tuesday in PLOS Medicine, researchers from several Texas academic centers tracked the increasing number of children with exemptions in all 18 states from the 2009-2010 to 2016-2017 school years. They characterized many rural counties, as well as urban areas, as “hotspots” because their high exemption rates put them at risk for epidemics of measles, whooping cough and other pediatric infectious diseases.

My maternal great-grandfather committed suicide in a depressive state after he was forced to retire by the factory he worked for decades at. War games are expensive? So too is a military that spends more per year than the next 10 countries combined (and that includes spending several times more than Russia and China and Iran and North Korea combined).

Military exercises are how the military prepares for potential future conflicts. It’s what they do. They need to do those to make sure they are ready if and when called upon.
Flying long distance missions is what the USAF does. It’s how we’ve done it for decades. The two gulf wars included long duration missions with flights starting from bases within the US and ending over Iraq. We had missions in Afghanistan launched from the US as well. I was a college student then and the Nixon election had nothing to do with progress. It was Vietnam and the assassinations that decided everything. People were infuriated with the current occupant of the WH and Humphrey suffered because of it. I ended up voting for him, although I supported Eugene McCarthy. The good that Johnson did was overshadowed by the war. It dominated almost every political thought of the time (except for the Wallace voters).

Between that and the expedited coarsening of the GOP in the last 10-12 years (a combination of losing the culture war, the economic disaster of the end of the Bush Administration, and the growing xenophobia of aging white people), a candidate like Trump makes sense. Unfortunately, the GOP doesn’t have the internal mechanics that the Democratic Party has to prevent a disaster nomination like Trump.
As for the general, we’ve had the discussion before, but I think Clinton was simply the perfect foil for him.

I’m honestly not depressed or resorting to overdrinking/drugging but it does sadden me. THis fall will be 10 years since Obama got elected. I really believed that would be a new beginning and in its own way it was but for something far worse. Not Obama’s fault obviously.

I had just started my job a few weeks prior. I was confident of victory. I had a dental appointment earlier that week and Itold the hygienist when she asked me, I told her I thought Clinton would win but yes the Anti-Obama stuff showed me the same things it did you but I guess I thought since we had survived Romney in 2012. In some ways, Trump did prove some of what RW assohles like Limbaugh have said about their base for years. But you know, tehre’es another thing to it and those are the Obama voters turned Trump voters. I want to know who the fuck those people are and shake them.

It is possible that Biden may have defeated Trump if he had entered the fray but maybe not. He didn’t have Hillary’s liabilities, nor did he have her assets. The media would not have focused on his emails, but they still would have treated Trump with kid gloves. It would have been an entirely different campaign — and voters may still have gone with the “outsider”. Of course, nobody would have been telling a defeated Biden that he should shut up and go away.

One of the major failings of the Obama Era Democratic Party is that they failed to build much of a bench.* Republicans dominated gubernatorial and senate elections, and since that’s where most presidential candidates come from, there just wasn’t anyone available to challenge Clinton in 2016 the way Obama did in 2008.

And that probably includes Jerry Brown deciding he wanted to be governor again in 2010; or Rory Reid in Nevada the same year (I don’t know enough about Nevada politics, but it always felt like they cleared the field for him in a way that never seems to work for Democrats).

I honestly don’t know. Biden’s son dying did change things but I think people overestimate Biden as a top of the ticket guy. Don’t get me wrong. That said, I do think he would have and still do think he would make a good President.

After the reaction I’ve seen since Trump took office, where we’ve finally got people running everywhere, I think a big portion of that is many Democratic constituents thought someone else would take care of it. I have a friend who was fairly certain even back in February 2016 that Trump was likely to win. He had acquaintances in Florida who were elderly Holocaust survivors who told him that the Trump campaign was reminiscent of Hitler campaigns.
