Downstairs I mentioned the latest Antarctic ice melt research.

Here is the Nature paper:

Mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet from 1992 to 2017

The Antarctic Ice Sheet is an important indicator of climate change and driver of sea-level rise. Here we combine satellite observations of its changing volume, flow and gravitational attraction with modelling of its surface mass balance to show that it lost 2,720 ± 1,390 billion tonnes of ice between 1992 and 2017, which corresponds to an increase in mean sea level of 7.6 ± 3.9 millimetres (errors are one standard deviation). Over this period, ocean-driven melting has caused rates of ice loss from West Antarctica to increase from 53 ± 29 billion to 159 ± 26 billion tonnes per year; ice-shelf collapse has increased the rate of ice loss from the Antarctic Peninsula from 7 ± 13 billion to 33 ± 16 billion tonnes per year. We find large variations in and among model estimates of surface mass balance and glacial isostatic adjustment for East Antarctica, with its average rate of mass gain over the period 1992-2017 (5 ± 46 billion tonnes per year) being the least certain.

Here is graph from the research group, that shows the acceleration in sea-level contribution from the melting:

I definitely don’t want what this guy is smoking.

He’s quoting JQ Adams.

The highest, the transcendent glory of the American Revolution was this — it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the precepts of Christianity.
Letter to an autograph collector (identified: “Washington, 27th April, 1837”), published in The Historical Magazine 4:7 (July 1860), pp. 193-194; this became slightly misquoted by John Wingate Thornton in The Pulpit of The American Revolution (1860): “The highest glory of the American Revolution, said John Quincy Adams, was this: it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity”.

Clinton was absolutely harmed by the Comey and Trump benefited.

And yet they think that Clinton benefited from Comey? The IG report pretty much finds the opposite.

Nope. Flunked out of *two* universities trying to get even a BA. First one because I spent the majority of my final quarter there at the dog track trying to get rich quick, second one because my hand issues were getting bad enough I could no longer write my essay tests in time, or my notes at all, without debilitating pain from holding the pen 5 minutes in.

Well, that, and academic-dishonesty issues were so strict around the turn of the millennium that you basically had to make sure even your independent turns of phrase had never before been turned, or else find the researcher (especially a historian) who originally said what you’d just thought of (even had you never read that passage before) and endnote it to their credit.

I rather doubt that John Quincy Adams said any such a thing.

I’m sorry to read you didn’t get the BA. I am also sorry about the hand issues, I can relate to that.

As for academic dishonesty issues, I can’t speak to how loose or strict those might have been, since I did not attend a university at all.

My turns of phrase are my own, whether a sharp left or a winding turn.

The most terrifying part of splitting these families is yet to come. Eventually, ICESS is going to have to reunite these families. Knowing how government agencies operate, there are going to be hundreds of kids who loose or misplace whatever identification they might have. These kids are too young to know their family names or the name of the original town/country they came from. The government will have to conduct 100’s of DNA checks to match parents with their kids.

In regards to Sessions using the Bible to justify separating kids from their parents, a few things:

1. Here’s the full text of Romans 13:

” Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”

As you can see, this places pretty stiff requirements on rulers as well as those who are ruled. Trump and his people fail all of these requirements and, as this suggests, are at great risk of bringing Judgement upon themselves.

2. The Bible also has some pertinent verses about rich men and needles and planks in eyes…

3. Trump and his goons are very much like the people who IMPRISONED PAUL so his citing this verse is particularly hypocritical.

4. The Bible does not suggest to follow anyone blindly, not even Christ himself. All of us, rulers and those who live under their rule, are commanded to be truthful, humble, generous, understanding, fair and moral. I can’t think of a single Republican who passes this test.

5. The Bible contains many warnings regarding those who CLAIM to follow Jesus but whose words and actions suggest otherwise.

6. Fuck Jeff Sessions.

Hasn’t it been confirmed that some have already been sold to human traffickers?

In the “I’m rubber you’re glue” school of conservative commentary, there was a case during the Obama administration of a couple children found in Ohio who’d fallen into the hands of traffickers. Senator Rob Portman at the time gave a moving and impassioned speech about the travesty and did nothing.

That would be the same unaccompanied minors that conservatives said didn’t exist then. The difference then was children were in fact unaccompanied and the federal government had to take charge of them.

Butthurt over an academic conflict:

The Public Pulse: Possible UNL censure

I don’t know how anyone can take seriously this possible censure of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln by the American Association of University Professors unless this organization opens up its records and provides information concerning any censure of the University of California, Berkeley; New York University; and various other liberal universities on the West Coast and in the Northeast.

These schools have made it almost impossible for any conservative speaker to appear at their schools and have done nothing to prevent the harassment, bullying and attacks against anyone having a different opinion from their liberal “group think.” Also, the treatment of students on those campuses trying to start conservative clubs has been shameful.

Cheryl Bartek, Omaha

The whataboutism is clear; Ms. Bartek has been trained by right-wing media (radio? Hannity?) to hate academia.

I looked for a story that described what exactly went on, but the Lincoln newspaper is behind a paywall. I did find this from the Omaha paper:

National group may censure UNL over handling of conflict involving conservative student

[…]

The situation involves the Aug. 25 conflict between a graduate student-lecturer and a sophomore who was recruiting for the conservative organization Turning Point USA.

The American Association of University Professors responded to UNL’s recent defense of its handling of the case by saying the AAUP “vehemently disagree(s)” with UNL’s interpretation.

The graduate student-lecturer, Courtney Lawton, belittled and criticized the student, and the student eventually left her recruitment table in tears.

[…]

The AAUP also says Lawton deserved a hearing before a UNL faculty panel and didn’t receive one.

[…]

The AAUP takes a pretty strong stand on how faculty ought to be treated, and thus not giving the TA a hearing is what the fuss apparently is about.

About Ms. Bartek’s assertion about censure records: The censures by the AAUP are not many but are public: aaup.org

UNL may be added to that list on the 16th.

The whine from Ms. Bartek misses the point censure - the censure is just about how disputes ought to be treated, not the ideological basis for why the student went off crying, or why the TA believes what they do.

To rational minds, yes. But on a sports-related site that leans liberal that I frequent, the righties are in their minority numbers filling the field. That’s the way this stuff seems to work. They can push the bullshit so hard it muddies the field. The Bannon way.

The only good way to counter that is to call bullshit. If it’s not countered, the less knowlegeable will be influenced by what they write.

Butthurt over an academic conflict:

Censuring conservative speakers in Nebraska? She’s gotta be kidding.

The Public Pulse is the Omaha World-Herald’s public comment line, normally limited to one hundred words. I have had a few letters appear there, though not recently.

Wholly crap. The New York Times says we need to understand these people.

I don’t have a degree in psychology or psychiatry.

My mother has a degree in clinical psychology though. She says “crazy” is a technical term that should only be used by professionals.

Someone posted a Twitter thread downstairs of the NYT articles that were a little too close for current comfort. To say they were Nazi-curious (as in Nazis aren’t so bad) is an understatement. Is look but I’m in my phone. Check it out.
