Butthurt over an academic conflict:

The Public Pulse: Possible UNL censure

The whataboutism is clear; Ms. Bartek has been trained by right-wing media (radio? Hannity?) to hate academia.

I looked for a story that described what exactly went on, but the Lincoln newspaper is behind a paywall. I did find this from the Omaha paper:

National group may censure UNL over handling of conflict involving conservative student

The AAUP takes a pretty strong stand on how faculty ought to be treated, and thus not giving the TA a hearing is what the fuss apparently is about.

About Ms. Bartek’s assertion about censure records: The censures by the AAUP are not many but are public: aaup.org

UNL may be added to that list on the 16th.

The whine from Ms. Bartek misses the point censure - the censure is just about how disputes ought to be treated, not the ideological basis for why the student went off crying, or why the TA believes what they do.

Censuring conservative speakers in Nebraska? She’s gotta be kidding.

The Public Pulse is the Omaha World-Herald’s public comment line, normally limited to one hundred words. I have had a few letters appear there, though not recently.

As for the Journal-Star, it isn’t paywalled per se, but it does have a very aggressive ad block detector. They won’t let you past if you’re running anything like NoScript.

I don’t know if the remnants of the storm will make it far enough to give you some rain relief, but we can hope so.

Yep, that’s it. Another fun trick is to get retweeted by someone, then change your display name.

It can be good, like to say something nice about Roseanne to get retweeted by her, then change the display name to “Roseanne is a racist bitch”…but the same trick can be used by them as well.

Great American Artist Jon McNaughton Being Accidental Nazi, Again (Wonkette, with a copy of the propaganda art painting, more at the link):

Just in time to celebrate the latest fuckery by ICE, Utah arteest Jon McNaughton has released yet another hagiographic painting of the Great and Powerful Trumpsie to help Americans better understand the times they live in. With his typical blend of the visual style of Thomas Kinkade and the subtle political insights of Ben Garrison, McNaughton once again helps us understand we live in a time of folksy fascism.

This one is titled “Make America Safe,” and like every McNaughton masterpiece, it deploys a metaphor that is quite simply micron-thick. A besuited Donald Trump stands in front of a picket fence with a padlock on the gate, holding in his perfectly normal-sized hand a good old-fashioned skeleton key of the sort that wouldn’t open any padlock manufactured since around the time of, let’s say, the Immigration Act of 1924.

Frankly, we doubt McNaugton is bright enough to have planned any reminder of that antiquated law, with its old racist national quotas aimed at Keeping America White. But the 1924 law is definitely what Team Trump has in mind when they talk about wanting more “skilled” immigrants like, say, people from Norway instead of the dusky hordes from shithole countries. The skill of being white and Christian was just as important to the bigots of the ’20s as to the bigots of today, and the 1924 law was so good at shutting the gate on “inferior races” that it helpfully prevented Jews from escaping to the USA prior to and even during the Holocaust.

The Trumpsters could not find their asses with both hands and have no concept of accountability, since our feckless media, corrupt congress, and brainwashed voters will not use the power they have to remove him.

A pardon means he gives up his V Amendment rights in regard to the crime pardoned.

Firing Rosenstein or Mueller will have millions spilling into the streets.

And pardoning Manafort won’t get the Trump family out of state charges.

Something conservatives (and some liberals) don’t seem to get, the relationship of the military vis a vis the elected civilian government.

Jim Wright responded in a fourteen tweet thread to someone noting that the President is also the Commander-in-Chief (which the commentator identified as a “rank”) and thus the “tradition” of Presidents saluting (which was only started by Ronald Reagan but this guy doesn’t seem to know that) is important.

EU backs tariffs against US as trade war escalates

EU member states have approved a raft of tariffs targeting US goods including whiskey and motorcycles in retaliation against duties imposed by President Donald Trump on European metals.

The move fuels a growing transatlantic trade war just days after a disastrous G7 summit in Canada at which Mr Trump lambasted his allies on the issue and refused to adopt a joint statement.

The European countermeasures aimed at €2.8bn ($3.3bn) of American imports come after Mr Trump followed through on his threat to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports at the start of June.

“Member states have unanimously supported the commission’s plan for the adoption of rebalancing measures on the US tariffs on steel and aluminium,” a European Commission source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the EU tariffs would take effect “in coming days”, with other officials saying they would be implemented by the beginning of July

CAISO: Renewables served 42% of California demand on May 16, setting record

I think the most important tool to achieve this goal will be vastly increasing our lithium battery storage system. We are working on completing 2 TW and planning another 2 TW of storage. 20 TW would be a good goal.

I am on episode 5, season 1 of Andromeda, and I am still wondering how the hell this ever got on TV. Apparently won a few awards too. When I revisit Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Angel I also wonder why I ever liked them in the first place, campy.

Because Keith Hamilton Cobb shirtless. That’s all the justification I needed for that show.

I never watched any of them in their first runs but they’re on now in reruns and I’m totally hooked. Especially Angel. It’s Urban fantasy, like Jim Butcher’s novels. Very good television.

re: #92 wheat-dogg

Benedict Arnold

Now, to be fair, prior to the colonial victory, they were involved in acts just as legal as the Johnny Rebs 90 years later, and for only slightly more justifiable reasons (IOW, though Wilberforce himself wasn’t visible on the horizon yet, the Southerners knew that if they stayed Englishmen, their slaves would be free within 50 years. Though Parliament really should have at least cooked up some rotten boroughs, and then the ones who were actually only contemplating rebellion for their rights as Englishmen would have as much representation in Westminster for themselves as any Devonian cousins would). And that wasn’t even the ‘Royal’ Army facing them, though it was HM the King’s personal Navy backing it up; the ECW and especially the Glorious Revolution had already established the concept of the King lacking direct control of parts of the military, and it instead being answerable only to civilians.

Although admittedly Arnold’s still a traitor under any definition, because he played RE Lee before playing Lawrence Chamberlain. But the idea that there would be no democratic freedom in the Englsh world without the Revolution? Totally made-up stuff largely created to whitewash slaveholding and later doubled down upon to play up ‘Southern patriotism’ when Beard and Company were trying to historically justify Jim Crow.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s busy spewing agitprop nonstop all while watching his winning trade war cost Americans even more. He started a war in Asia and has no clue what he’s doing (and you never start a trade war in Asia).

Then he’s going on about the IG report, and lying his ass off to Fox without Fox indicating that what Trump is saying is just word salad lies.

But the Fox interview actually goes downhill from there.

Trump is a clear and present danger to the Republic and the GOP continues enabling the vain egomaniac because they support his policy outcomes. They see the judiciary getting stacked with right wing extremists, the environmental protections in place are getting rolled back, white nationalist immigration policy is implemented, and civil and voting rights are likewise getting rolled back all to benefit white American men who can’t stand that minorities, women, and LGBT have the rights that those angry white guys have always had.

Haha. Every computer sold in China comes complete with “security software” written by Qihoo (360 antivirus, etc.) and adware from Tencent and Sohu. Not sure about the hardware/firmware side of things, though. My last laptop was a Lenovo purchased in Beijing, which I made more palatable by uninstalling all the crapware. Its replacement was a Lenovo bought at Microcenter in Denver. That was three years ago, and while Lenovo II is chugging along quite well, it may be due for a replacement in another year.

You’re asking for courage and sacrifice from Republican leaders. They have none to give. Even to the extent that they disagree with Trump’s policies (see trade war), their voters support Trump. Even tweeting against Trump puts them at risk of losing their primaries. Open, concrete opposition would mean sacrificing their political careers.

North Koreans don’t rub their faces on their flag, nor do they wear it as a garment. Americans would require some serious b-mods to adopt NK flag etiquette.

Trump would probably like that, though.

Trump has been calling lawmakers to express enthusiasm for the agreement — but also complaining that he has not had more robust support from GOP lawmakers, said a person with knowledge of the calls, who spoke on condition of anonymity to share internal conversations. While the president calls the summit a “first step,” with more meetings sure to come, he also has been arguing that he has already done more than his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

Cohen’s fucked (legal term). He can’t afford legal counsel along the lines of the now departed McDermott, Will & Emery LLP. They were probably billing him six figures a month. But he needs that level of counsel because of the array of crimes and criminal acts he’s involved in.

It comes down to money, and Cohen doesn’t have deep pockets. He also may be realizing that cutting a deal will salvage something for his family.

While Cohen might think a pardon could help, it will end up hitting Trump even harder, because Cohen will be compelled to testify against those he worked for: Trump, and potentially Sean Hannity.

…96 percent of the American public has chosen not to follow Trump’s Twitter feed and voraciously consume his thoughts unfiltered, according to that Gallup poll. Reiterating his arguments without additional context in a headline risks doing little more than assuring that many of that 96 percent end up with the same inaccurate information in their media diet.

yes, that’s exactly why i called him “not rich” (anymore)

Some cuteness from The Columbus Zoo. They have a new addition to the family. Video has no sound, but plenty activity from the bouncing baby.

The Columbus zoo has one of the best programs for gorillas. The zoo was home of the first gorilla born in captivity. The new orphan is in good hands.

NBC4i - Keepers hope orphan gorilla Zahra warms quickly to new family in Columbus

POWELL (WCMH) - A nine-month-old orphaned gorilla will join her surrogate mother and the primate family at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Zahra was born in September at the Milwaukee County Zoo and arrived in Columbus Wednesday.

Those big brown eyes are sure to melt hearts this summer.

“She wakes up, she eats, she plays, she sleeps. She wakes up, she eats, she plays, and she sleeps,” said Audra Meinelt, Curator of Congo Expedition at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Just like a typical human 9-month-old, Zahra is not shy and is loving all the new attention.

“She’s very active,” said Meinelt.

Her activity is a nice change to what zookeepers say was once a tough couple of months for the tiny primate.

Her parents died in April. Their deaths in Milwaukee were linked to gastrointestinal infections caused by E.Coli in their water supply.

Zahra has been in the care of humans ever since, but soon she’ll get a new mother and three siblings.

“She is ready to be back with gorillas so we are hoping this is going to be a very quick process of reintegrating here with a family group,” said Meinelt.

One and a half-year-old JJ, 3-year-old Kamina and 5-year old-Kamoli will be her new big brothers and sister - along with five other western lowland gorillas.

Fans of the Congo Expedition are thrilled.

The Columbus Zoo has been a pioneer of gorilla surrogacy for more than 30 years, having raised 16 baby gorillas through its program.

Zahra’s caregivers say they are not sure when she will make her debut to the public, but when she does, it will be a grand one.

Iframe

A bit about Colo, the first gorilla born in captivity anywhere in the world in 1956. Sadly she passed away last year. But she lived a nice long life and was loved as the focal point of the zoo for many years.

I posted it a while ago, but I still think the way all of this ends is with Trump’s private plane taking off, chased by a phalanx of black FBI SUVs, blue-and-reds flashing, a cloud of money scattering as Trump kicks crates of cash off the plane to lessen weight, as Ivanka and Don Jr. run sobbing down the runway screaming “Daddy!
