re: #533 Eclectic Cyborg

Make no mistake: Children will die before this is all over.

ICE will try to claim it was “exposure” or “heat stroke” or “an unfortunate accident”.

We can’t let them get away with it.

This isn’t a humanitarian crisis caused by war or conflict. Not one caused by a major natural or manmade disaster. It’s one that was created by evil men who see these children as nothing more than bargaining chips at best, a blight upon the “purity” of their nation at worst.

That’s because Little Marco’s folks weren’t detained in a cell while the government fast-tracked the paperwork to boot their asses back to Havana. Like his buddy Tailgunner Ted, he’s totally okay with the preferential treatment of certain “illegals” because they reliably vote for whichever party shakes its fist at the husk of Fidel Castro.

Get rid of Trump guys and I hope to God we do. But you still have a good percentage of the country that accepts this. I’ve said it before but I worry about a truly global economic crisis that allows these guys to really rise. Trumpism is a different phenomenon than Nazism. IT did not rise out of economic troubles, it rose out of prosperity in one of the most powerful cities in the world.

Asylum is a legal immigration process. Persons seeking asylum can do it upon entry, or they can claim it as a defense against being deported.

Either way, Trump is doing what white supremacists have been seeking for decades and he’s going after legal immigrants (which is what those seeking asylum are doing).

Trumpworld is filled with a bunch of feckless cunts.

And anyone who defends those feckless cunts are themselves feckless cunts.

Oh, and I being rude?

The barbaric policies Trump’s imposed to satisfy his white supremacist/nativist base deserves the coarse language use. I will not stand idly by and do nothing.

No good people should stand by while people seeking lawful entry to the US via asylum are treated like animals. Trump made it clear that he thinks if you’re not a white European Christian coming into the US that you’re an animal who’ll bring crime and violence with you.

It’s straight out of the Nazi playbook, which was used against the Jews in Germany, and used by America First Nazis here in the US to prevent Jews fleeing Germany from being granted safe entry here.

Boston Children’s Hospital weighs in on the family separation:

Boston Children’s stands for keeping families together

Dear Friends,

It seems like it should go without saying that Boston Children’s Hospital does not support the U.S. government’s current practice of forcibly separating children from their parents as they seek asylum. While we recognize that the broader debate over immigration policy is complex, Boston Children’s can never support practices that tear families apart. To divide these families, even temporarily, is to rob children of their primary safety net and undercut their potential for a healthy and successful future.

At Boston Children’s, we have a mission: to provide children with the tools, treatments, care and support they need in order to grow into healthy adults. The responsibility to offer comfort and care to those who need it is a value that has guided this hospital for nearly 150 years. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, welcoming and respectful environment for all who come through our doors, and we do not believe it’s too much to ask the same of our country.

All our best,

Sandra L. Fenwick
President and CEO

I propose what the Rs do to healthcare as the solution.

Take the ICE force and remove it from HHS. Then institute block grants to local/state governments for the sole purpose of holding their own immigration agents. Then watch the states spend that grant money in places it needs rather than on a force of thugs. Then after that bleeds itself recreate an Immigrant Rights and Assistance group in the HHS and call it a day.

Border Patrol runs over Native Americans on their own tribal lands, but federal law enforcement allows sovereign citizens to take over a national wildlife refuge they have no right to do, and lets them occupy that land for months causing significant resource damage.

I just spent the better part of two hours on Facebook, going back and forth with a nephew who argued that taking kids away from their parents at the border was equivalent to putting the child of a drug dealer in protective custody.

He’s a smart kid, so I went step by step with him. Things he didn’t know:

- that applying for asylum is legal, and people applying for asylum have up to a year to actually file after getting here
- that Border Patrol was denying people their applications for asylum, thereby turning them into ‘border jumpers’ and arresting them
- that none of the camps where people were allowed to inspect had any girls or women in them, only men and boys
- that some immigrant children had been handed over to human traffickers

It was a long walk, but I actually got him to conceded that his initial point was wrong and had he known what I told him, he never would have posted it. And he said that he agreed that this has to be stopped.

It got me thinking about how many people are watching this and just assuming that everyone showing up at the border is illegal. And then this song came on the radio and the words really hit home.

If Everyone Was Listening

The actors and jesters are here
The stage is in darkness and clear
For raising the curtain
And no-ones quite certain whose play it is

How long ago, how long
If only we had listened then.
If we’d known just how right we were going to be.

For we dreamed a lot
And we schemed a lot
And we tried to sing of love before the stage fell apart.

If everyone was listening you know
There’d be a chance that we could save the show
Who’ll be the last clown
To bring the house down?
Oh no, please no, don’t let the curtain fall

Well, what is your costume today?
Who are the props in your play?
You’re acting a part which you thought from the start
Was an honest one.

Well how do you plead?
An actor indeed!
Go re-learn your lines,
You don’t know what you’ve done
The finale’s begun.

If everyone was listening you know
There’d be a chance that we could save the show,
Who’ll be the last clown
To bring the house down?
Oh no, please no, don’t let the curtain fall.

‘Infrastructure Week’

The opposition response so far seems to be based on an assumption that this will be something wholly new, created from scratch at vast cost. We can count on Trump to screw it up, of course, but the creation of a separate space branch does not necessarily entail any substantial new expenditure. It basically separates the existing Air Force Space Command and some related activities into its own branch, separate from the Air Force as a whole. As such this proposal is similar to the separation of the Army Air Force into the independent US Air Force in 1947. This has been on the table for many years and there are valid arguments both pro and con. Hysterical assumptions that it will automatically be a huge new drain on resources are just not going to help.

Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

When Israel was in Egypt land
Let my people go!
Oppressed so hard they could not stand
Let my people go!

So the God said: go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

So Moses went to Egypt land
Let my people go!
He made all pharaoes understand
Let my people go!

Yes the lord said: go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

Thus spoke the lord, bold Moses said:
-let my people go!
if not I’ll smite, your firstborn’s dead
-let my people go!

God-the lord said :
Go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!
Tell all pharaoes

I know that, for most of the public, the chaos that followed in the wake of the creation of the Air Force and the need for “consolidation” of the services is lost to the mists of history. To them, I advise to look up four words: “Revolt of the Admirals.”

Big Majority Oppose Trump’s Separation Policy

its a 4 line synopsis so im quoting the whole thing

A new Quinnipiac poll finds that American voters oppose the policy of separating children and parents when families illegally cross the border into America by a wide margin, 66% to 27%.

However, Republican voters support the separation policy 55% to 35%, the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial group to support it.

American voters also support 79% to 15% allowing immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, so-called “Dreamers,” to remain and ultimately to apply for citizenship.

A new CNN poll finds 67% of Americans opposed the policy while just 28% approve.

Looked up Stephen Miller’s bio on wikipedia.
I see that he was born in 1985, meaning that I have socks older than he is.
He is an OG disciple of none other than bloody-handed Wayne LaPierre:

Miller became a committed conservative after reading Guns, Crime, and Freedom, a book against gun control by National Rifle Association Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre.

He was also a conservative contrarian brat in high school:

While attending Santa Monica High School, Miller began appearing on conservative talk radio. In 2002, at the age of 16, Miller wrote a letter to the editor of the Santa Monica Outlook, criticizing his school’s response to 9/11 in which he stated that “Osama Bin Laden would feel very welcome at Santa Monica High School.” Miller invited conservative activist David Horowitz to speak, first at the high school and later at Duke University, and afterwards denounced the fact that neither of the centers would authorize the event.

He also had an aversion to Latinos from an early age:

Miller was in the habit of “riling up his fellow [high school] classmates with controversial statements” and telling Latino students to speak only English.

His career follows a now familiar pattern from there. It is a real mind-bender to me that this fascist pissant was still in high school on 9-11, but is now making national policy.

I wrote a check to the US State Dept. today. To renew my passport. So I can get a driver’s license that doesn’t say ‘NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES’. Because the name on my birth certificate does not have the diminutive ‘ie’ on my first name. My (expired) passport has it. My last driver’s license has it. My Social Security card has it. My library card has it. I can have my birth certificate altered to have it (who knew?). I did sign a statement when I was getting my first license in California to the effect that I am not trying to defraud anyone by putting that ‘ie’ on my name. Not good enough for New Mexico. NM was among the last to comply with the REAL ID act, so they are making up for lost time in hassling people. It was, is, my turn.

Todd is apparently shopping for a GOP sugar daddy who will finance his future political campaigns. He lost badly when he ran for mayor a couple of years ago, and blamed inadequate financing compared to his personally wealthy opponent. He did have much better name recognition, though, and my take is that this more than evened things out. I think he lost because voters perceived him as a weasel. His friendship with local fascists and conspira-liars did not help once “somebody” pointed this out to his opponent’s campaign. With any luck he will get together the funding to run for Congress or Governor just as Texas turns blue and drowns his ill-conceived ambition in a Democratic tsunami. He will not be welcome if he tries to re-invent himself yet again and slink back to the Democrats

There is no way she would answer any question she didn’t want to answer, And, she bends the answers the way she wants them to be heard to the questions she took.

And to keep in the theme…he’d throw Sessions under the bus as well as Miller if it gets him what he wants and/or takes the heat off him.

Miller told him not to fire Sessions. Sessions told him not to fire Miller. There it sits.

So, this happened: Top Homeland Security Republican Demands End To Family Separations

The top Republican on the House subcommittee responsible for funding the Department of Homeland Security demanded that the Trump administration end its forced separation of parents and children at the U.S. border, going further than many of his congressional colleagues in his demands.

Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS), the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions calling for him to end the controversial policy.

re: #371 Blind Frog Belly White

So, apparently one of the selling points of electric cars is that you can set the regenerative braking so that you mostly don’t have to perform the onerous task of moving your foot to the brake pedal when you want to slow down.

Wow.

I mean, you already don’t have to shift gears, or use a clutch. And now switching pedals is just too much work.

The selling point is the regenerative braking itself. It’s nice to see the estimated range increase at the bottom of a hill and know that you didn’t wear the brake pads down getting there. I set it to max regen but leave “creep” on when driving Dad’s Model S because then it behaves like my Pilot when take the brake off (with the exception of the “hold” that engages if I press the brake down very hard at a stop.)

The only potential problem is that regenerative braking disengages if the battery is at or very close to 100% charge, because there is no alternate dump load for the excess energy, such as you would build into a home wind or hydro power battery storage system to prevent over-spinning the turbine. Tesla could’ve built-in a thermal resistance load to do this but then all that heat has to be dealt with somehow. This plus the extra battery life is why you should only charge to 90% (especially if you’re charging at the top of a big hill) unless you’re going on a long trip and really need the extra range.

That is as clear a choice as voters are going to get as to the direction of the country. Are we Cruz’s America, where children are used as pawns to win points with Trump and Cruz’s anti-immigrant base, or are we, as O’Rourke put it, “better than this”?

At this point, O’Rourke is directing his ire primarily at the administration, but he should not be shy about pointing the finger directly at his opponent, who slavishly supports every move the administration makes and has consistently opposed immigration solutions that would have overwhelming bipartisan support. Every parent in Texas (and every decent human being) should understand they are making not just a political choice but a moral one, too.

I have a problem with some of the muscles in my left thigh and into my knee that, when the condition flares up makes it impossible for me to operate a clutch. (It make’s it extremely difficult to even walk). So the only way I can have a manual transmission vehicle any more, is if I have another that is automatic as a backup. The last manual transmission car I had I sold in 2002 right after this problem first developed.

If I can keep my truck alive and kicking as a backup, I might have the option open to me again.

Yes, but Wilson still writes fuckery like this:

When you let a closet Democrat like Trump lead the GOP, this is what you get

The problem with people like Rick is that they are immune from introspection. They will never take responsibility for paving the way for Trump and will always project blame onto Democrats for the racist socio-pathology that establishment Republicans condoned and incubated to further their own greed only to lose control of. In their minds Democrats don’t stand for anything because people like Rick never listen to them, so naturally when they see a protean shapeshifting populist monster like Trump actually take over their party and expose the rot at it’s core they call him a Democrat. Because Rick simply cannot allow himself to confront the truth that this is the logical evolution of the conservative movement he was a part of for so long and still internally identifies with.

I learned to drive in a ‘71 VW bus. Loved it. It was the fastest car across the street but once you put it in second gear that was it. Anyway the modern automatics are pretty amazing. I had a 72 Cutlass Supreme with a three speed tranny, but the 2018 Honda Oddysey has a 10 speed auto. They help keep the engine in its optimum power range I guess. Subaru is putting out a bug SUV with a small 4 cylinder turbo, but with an ECV transmission so it stays exactly on its ideal power band.

OK, I might have my tinfoil hat screwed on entirely too tight, but based on the things I’ve read about Evangelicals going into foreign countries and completely messing up adoption (and rendering some countries closed due to their antics), it’s entirely possible that he’s on to something here.

Again, we might be in tinfoil hat country, but there is such a thing as adoption as evangelism.

Not random.

In this case, the fire clearly breached the battery pack, which makes it look like it was punctured.

The driver says that there wasn’t an accident, but it’s not impossible that the underbody hit something without them knowing it.

Or they knew about it and wrote it off, or lied, or it happened while a valet was driving it. Point is gasoline powered cars catch fire all the time, but every Tesla incident becomes a headline and anecdote overwhelms statistical reality.

I agree, and have been highly skeptical of Jen Rubin (particularly now that Romney has reared his robotic head.) He’s totally aware that the optics of this policy doesn’t look good for him, so he’s pretending to be concerned when he doesn’t really give a f*ck what really happens to these families. I remember when the Gang of Eight wrote a bipartisan immigration reform plan, he adamantly opposed it and went as far as to claim the bill provided amnesty for undocumented immigrants when he knew it didn’t. If Cruz is one thing, it’s a self-serving b*st*rd. The best example is the way he’s been sucking up to Trump after Trump insulted his wife’s appearance. Any other man/politician with decent morals who valued his wife, marriage, and family would have never praised Trump for anything for committing that major offense, but Cruz did.

I drew a few kindergarten classes while I was substitute teaching. One of these was at the first of the semester, when the kids were limited to half a day for the very good reason that they had not adapted to being away from their parents, and the process had to be introduced slowly. Even half a day was traumatic enough for many of them, the little guys would just burst out crying at times.
Farther back, I can still remember my first day of kindergarten, in the impossibly remote year of 1954. I was confused at the strange adults and did not understand why my mother had sent me away on the bus with kids I did not know. There were windows between the classroom and the adjacent corridors. About 2 hours into the class I saw my mother walk by. She was there to finish up some paperwork, but I naturally thought I was being rescued and it was time to go. I yelled, “there’s my mom!” and tore out after her with my teacher in pursuit. Instead of being glad to see me, my mom was horrified and told me I had to stay a little longer. I was bewildered and started crying.
I can’t even imagine what it is like for the little ones in Trump’s detention camps.

They’re waiting for the new RW talking points, but I think they’ll be waiting a while longer because neither Trump, Miller, Kelly, nor Sanders, Sessions, or Neilsen expected their original talking points to be met with majority opposition from American citizens. I’m imagining Trump and the aforementioned others huddled in a room in the WH, coordinating with RW media outlets and major RW blog owners via conference calls working on new talking points. Knowing Trump and the others on the Right, if they had new talking points, Foxers would be on social media spreading them. I even think Trump and the others may be shocked that their talking points didn’t sell the way they thought they would which is why I think there were multiple delays in today’s WH presser.

I’m in outta fucks to give to the right wingers I know in my SM:

Let’s clarify a few things here: 1) Applying for asylum is only possible while physically present in the U.S, The administration has in fact made it harder to obtain asylum under A.G. Sessions and many of those people you’ve seen dtained are in fact applying for asylum. In fact thanks to Sessions, it’s no longer possible to apply for asylum citing domestic abuse, 2) Illegal immigration is not a criminal violation, it is a civil violation, please stop treating it as it’s akin to robbing a bank, I would not approve of the government taking your kids from you for a speeding ticket. 3) The administration is very much against legal immigration, please google the RAISE Act introduced by Senators Perdue and Cotton designed to reduce legal immigration, it’s unlikely to pass but it does have the President’s support. 4) Look at your own family story sometime and stop begin so smugly convinced your family did it right. 5) immigrants are not taking your tax money to go on welfare, many in fact are small business owners and immigrants of all types in fact commit crimes at a lower rate than natural born citizens 6) If your family were living in a place with extreme poverty or violence, you’d want to do everything possible to give your and your children a better life. That’s all. Paralegal/bleeding heart rant off but I’m sick about what this s country is becoming on immigration. My own grand uncle was what some people would in a slur call an anchor baby. And what did Uncle Stan do? Well Uncle Stan enlisted in the US Army while many others still saw the wars in Europe and Asia as “their problem”.

Actually Jennifer Ruben, Joe Scarborough, Max Boot, and Kurt Bardella have all said they left the Republican Party within the last year because of it’s hard right positions. Jonah Goldberg, Bill Kristol, David Frum, and Rick Wilson on the other hand are on board with the Trump Train.

EVERY time Scarborough and friend say something against trump, they add a Clinton attack as a rider. If Pence replaced trump they would love him forever.
