They Might Be Giants Learn to Love the Air Horn: “The Neck Rolls Aren’t Working”

Music • Views: 33,208

YouTube

that air horn is blowing away
the clear thinking that’s needed to stop
the loud air horn from making itself the discussion.
this headband I don’t think it’s mine it’s the
wrong size it’s cutting off my circulation
and making me think that it’s fine.

and I saved up all my money
for some lessons on how to spend money
and the neck rolls aren’t working
and the neck rolls aren’t working
and the neck rolls aren’t working like you said

this gut wrench I’m using to fix
the bad drainpipe
that’s leaking all over my gut wrench
is right on the brink of destroying
my chances of wrecking my chances of wrecking
any last hope of defeating any last hope that I had
to go back to being broken
like before when I quit working
and the neck rolls weren’t working
and the neck rolls weren’t working
and the neck rolls weren’t working either then

then, then, why’d you have to make me say
then, then, I don’t need reminders of
when, when, I was just a child of
ten, ten, watching astronaut john
glenn, glenn spashing down to earth a
gain, gain, while I’m still orbiting.

headband I guess the headband
I changed my mind the headband
not so bad

and the air horn
how can you stay mad at the air horn?
just look it’s adorable
how can you not put your ear to it?

monday, still not working yet
thursday, wait I mean it’s still
monday, I’m not losing my hair
it’s getting shorter
and the kids are getting shorter
and the rain is falling upwards
and I saved up all my money
for some lessons on how to waste money
and the neck rolls aren’t working
and the neck rolls aren’t working
and the neck rolls aren’t working like you said

This is going to make the Smoot-Hawley tariff kerfuffle look like a Studio 54 Disco Party!

One major difference: the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were, basically, a Congressional initiative, with the specifications worked out (over something like a year), and then passed and sent to President Hoover for signature (not that he cared).

This time round, though, it seems like tariff “policy” (using that word advisedly) seems to be mainly a product of the White House i.e., Donald Trump’s angry brainfarts over whatever “unfair” practice he thinks he can gin up resentment over.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s trade policy is to pull out the most protectionist/nativist/isolationist bulkshit (because bullshit just doesn’t quite cover it) and then double down with even more unnecessary grandstanding.

The net result is the US is going to vaporize its trade relations with allies and strategic partners while others benefit.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room: Russia. They benefit from the strife Trump’s more than willing to initiate. They benefit from the EU breakup and BREXIT. They benefit from the chaos Trump’s engaging in domestically while putting white nationalist policies into effect here.

Everywhere you look, Russia benefits from Trump’s actions, and yet the GOP continues to enable, condone, and cheer on Trump’s actions as though he can do no wrong.

Even on the immigration policy the GOP isn’t standing up to Trump, but rather complaining that Trump’s going to fuck up the GOP chances in the midterms. It’s a style problem for the GOP elected officials, not that Trump’s pushing white nationalism/supremacist policies.

Everywhere you look, GOPers are trying to deflect and project. They’re taking pages out of Trump’s bigot brigade routine. They aren’t standing up to their base, let alone the bigots because this is who they are.

The Washington Post is usually a better outlet than the New York Times, but this one I can’t even.

On one level I understand their argument. But I’m at the point with the Trump gang and their systematic destruction of everything decent about this country in favor of right wing fantasyland authoritarian bullshit that I think we need to worry less about “civility” and more about the wrecking crew in office.

You see a guy say something rude to a woman in some public space and you politely object. At work some employee comes in late one time too many. A polite correction is in order. When you see a man attempting to beat a woman down, or an employee threaten violence, polite is over with. It’s time to act. The damn lies have muddied where genuine worthwhile red lines of policy are. Cross that line and the people re assert the power to correct it. Added edit- Best we do this while we still can and apply peer pressure to force change.

Given everything else going on, some otherwise news worthy items get to easily overlooked, such as this:

A Leading Climate Agency May Lose Its Climate Focus

What few comments this has generated today seem to be focusing on this part:

[…]

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is part of the Department of Commerce, operates a constellation of earth-observing satellites. Because of its work on climate science data collection and analysis, it has become one of the most important American agencies for making sense of the warming planet. But that focus may shift, according to a slide presentation at a Department of Commerce meeting by Tim Gallaudet, the acting head of the agency.

In the presentation, which included descriptions of the past and present missions for the agency, the past mission listed three items, starting with “to understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans and coasts.” In contrast, for the present mission, the word “climate” was gone, and the first line was replaced with “to observe, understand and predict atmospheric and ocean conditions.”

And yes, that is all quite suspiciously a simple way to bury “climate” because Trump is an idiot. Some appear to be saying it’s not so important that “climate” as a word be included, and that may be so.

But to me, the real problem is not being discussed, and it’s this part:

The presentation also included a new emphasis: “To protect lives and property, empower the economy, and support homeland and national security.”

In other words, to make NOAA a part of a Trump authoritarian organ.

NOAA has always been about learning and care-taking (oceans, mostly.)

Given that the Coast Guard used to be part of the DoT and thus also closely related to NOAA was one of those things of casual but not dramatic importance.

But the sense of the new proposed mission statement for NOAA puts homeland security up front.

Be ware.

From that opinion piece:

[…]

Several of the restaurant’s staff are gay and objected to Ms. Sanders’s defense of Mr. Trump’s discriminatory policies against transgender people. The staff also objected to the administration’s recent actions leading to the separation of thousands of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Respecting her staff’s wishes, the restaurant owner politely asked Ms. Sanders to leave, and Ms. Sanders politely acceded. She then tweeted about the episode, turning it into a public controversy.

[…]

A little later:

But never-at-rest social media have blurred the line between work hours and private time

The people denied a meal at their restaurant of choice spend all of their working hours making the private time of millions of people absolutely unbearable. May they experience hunger.

Trump’s notion that exports and imports must be balanced between every pair of trading partners under the sun, and that lack of such balance is somehow evidence of unfairness —that is utter bullshit.

Of course, if any one nation’s overall exports does not come close to matching that same nation’s overall imports for a long while, that would be cause for concern.

That’s actually interesting to me. I assumed that term limits came with consequences, but I couldn’t figure out what the catch was. That makes sense.

For years, energy companies wanted to deregulate California’s energy market but Willie Brown the House Speaker stood in the way and kept blocking it. So they allied with the Koch Brothers and bankrolled the Term Limits initiative playing the race card effectively against Willie. Term limits implemented and when Willie was termed out of office in came the energy deregulation which Enron used to rip Californians off. The crown jewel was supposed to be the selloff of the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power to private investors but that barely failed.

Enron successfully disrupted energy transmission to the point that they forced Gray Davis out of office and got their stooge Ah-Nold in.

Term Limits suck dead elephant dicks.

That’s the thing with a lot of racists, they think they’re insulated from consequences. And much of the time they are, especially the rich ones or the ones who feel safe where they are (Cobb County GA, I’m giving you side eye…). So when their shit sprays back on them, they start flailing. As we see… Roseanne owns a farm in Hawaii, she should go there and try to stfu on Twitter and do something useful…. and then I laughed and laughed at how there’s barely a chance of that ever happening. Once people get entrenched past a certain point, they don’t come back.

With Trump’s fixation on the MS-13 gang, has anyone seen mention of his own ties to the Russian Mob (a.k.a. Bratva). Here’s one of many stories (from US News) :

Trump Had Ties to Russian Mob Figures: Testimony
By Alan Neuhauser, Staff Writer Jan. 18, 2018, at 7:09 p.m.
Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson testified that the real estate mogul built relationships with Russian gangsters, who were themselves tied to the Russian government.
THE FOUNDER OF AN opposition research firm that assembled a now-infamous dossier on Donald Trump during his presidential campaign told congressional investigators in November that Trump, as a real estate developer, had ties to Russian mafia figures who appeared to be laundering money through Trump-owned and Trump-licensed properties.

“It gradually reached a point where it seemed like most of the people around Trump had a connection to Russian organized crime or Russia in one way or another,” Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson said, according to a transcript of the interview released Thursday.

Addendum: I just heard a rumble of thunder.

And in other news, Stamford, CT art gallery owner Fernando Luis Alvarez was arrested for dropping off a 800-pound steel sculpture of a bent, burnt heroin spoon in the driveway of Purdue Pharma on Friday morning and then refusing to remove it. He was charged with a misdemeanor and a felony.

The sculpture, named “Purdue,” was made by Boston-based artist Domenic Esposito, who was present at the time of the sculpture drop. Esposito was not charged or arrested. He said before the art drop that he and Alvarez decided who would take the criminal charges.

*snip*

“I have been extremely bothered and moved by the architects of this epidemic,” Alvarez said. “I want to hold this family responsible for what they created and put in front of society and created a modern-day massacre.”

*snip*

At 10:45 a.m., workers from the city public works department showed up with a backhoe, scooped up the spoon and loaded it onto a flatbed truck to be taken away. Police said the sculpture would be registered as evidence.

This Time magazine article has more information—the two are talking about gifting the spoon to Massachusetts since it’s taken the lead in going after opioid manufacturers.

Another is to take a cue from the recon forces of small nations. Like, where I come from, some recon also handle operations behind enemy lines. To put it short, learn ways, even ways which do not involve firing a single round, to be as corrosive as a super-charged belt sander with a 30-grit belt to enemy troops without engaging. Pull pranks, leave notes… The options are endless.

And yes, a hat tip from FDF recon to the resistance movements of various countries against the Nazi’s are in order.

This is a taster:

How well trained are basic Finnish reconnaissance soldiers?

How do you measure good training?

There are several lines of reconnaissance soldiers.

o Army trains “foot recons”
o Army armored corps have armored recons
o Border Guard have their own reconnaissance corps, every other batch are trained as Sissi who specialize in guerrilla warfare and every other as recons

Early into my training we went to see some army “foot” recons setting up antipersonnel weapons such as claymores and pipe bombs. We literally walked into them, they were busy doing things but still we only saw them from a few meters distance.

During one of the training sessions these same guys put the Military Police company to a test - every hour the MP’s were told where the recon squad was. For a whole weekend they chased them without seeing them once.

Finnish recons have a motto: “Never steal more than you can carry”

It is their favorite pastime to confuse, distract and steal stuff from their enemies during war exercises. Among things stolen are included tent heaters, these big things:

[photo of heater size of a small oil barrel]

To steal one from a tent from infantry in defensive positions is in my opinion no small feat given that there can be a whole company in defensive positions with overlapping firing zones and each tent is typically occupied at all times in and within it’s presence.

Note: they don’t steal things to keep, they return them at some point and it’s merely to practice their war time infiltration skills and to test their ability and to also train the opposing force to realize that if it had been Spetsnaz unit they’d all be dead - so better be more aware and perceptive the next time.

The recons do not primarily infiltrate and engage enemy forces though. It is their primary mission to provide reconnaissance for the command and some units are equipped and trained to lead indirect fire from concealed positions.

The recons if spotted will seek to simply avoid and disengage. They are incredibly good at packaging their entire camp in an instant and committing a fighting withdrawal. If you chase them you’ll be constantly running into a series of ambushes and booby traps which will deter your pursuit - provided you can even keep up with their pace - they’re the fastest troops in the entire FDF.

Border Guards recons are very similar, just belonging to different organization during peace time but incorporated into military during war time.

Armored recons have a different job and setup - they have assault tanks (IFV’s) or some other platform for rapid movement. Armored recons are slightly more aggressive and more about acting as the lead element to armored corps - they find the enemy and they’d love to ambush them while doing so.

Guards Jägers also train their own special variety of urban recons, specialized in reconnaissance operations in urban setting since Guards Jägers specialize in urban warfare in metropolitan area, including and not limited to underground (literally, in tunnels and such) fighting.

Foot recons primarily avoid any contact.

Sissi guerrilla fighting forces have all the skills that recons have but they are a combat force where recons are more purely infiltrators and “ghosts”. Sissi take these same infiltration and camouflage skills but they use them to create an element of surprise which combined with them choosing the battlefield and the enemy and every other condition means that they can destroy larger superior enemy formations via ambushes.

From a French foreign legionnaire:

In support of Matti Porkka´s [Guy above/Teukka] answer, I will correlate in saying that some retelling from friends of mine in the Swedish Defense Forces who did joint exercises with them are a bit unsettling…

As an exemple, during one of these exercises, a platoon of Swedish soldiers was to try and track down a team of Finnish Long Range Recon Patrol in Northern Sweden. The Swedes were equipped with all kinds of gear including helicopters, night vision gear and K-9 assets.

The exercise was supposed to last 6 days. The Swedes never found them. They never so little as glimpsed or heard them once and every trail their dogs picked up led into a maze of several hours in impossible terrain before leading them back to the exact original point where they had picked the scent up.

During this week, the Sissi :

regularly stole food from the Swedes and left thank you notes in Finnish

” borrowed ” canteens, ammo, clothing and even boots from the Swedes which they hanged up in trees

stuffed the heads of dead rabbits and snakes in some of the Swedes´ rucksacks

woke them up early in the morning with tear gas

they culminated in capturing one of their sentries and held him captive for 48 hours before returning him blindfolded and unarmed but well fed and healthy to his camp

At the end of the exercise, the Sissi exposed to the Swedes high resolution photographies of each one of them with names and ranks. They even had some of their nicknames written down. They had sketches portraits of the dogs with their specificities such as name, sex, size, approximative weight and physical characteristics. They also had their radio codes.

That might give you an idea how well trained and skilled they are at what they do.

These people train at ” welcoming” Russians to their land again any day of the week since WWII and that is a very serious matter to them. They have not let their guard down since then, it´s part of their military culture. Finns in general are very special compared to the rest of Nordics. Finns are considerably tougher on the average, it is due to a rather unique cultural concept they refer to as sisú. Mental toughness and resolve is still a cultural value to Finns which is very unique among Nordics. I have always been impressed by Finnish military knowledge of bushcraft and winter warfare and not many military in the world of armed forces master these type of knowledge to the extent Finnish long range recon patrols do.

How well trained are basic Finnish reconnaissance soldiers?
