Bad News From the Supreme Court

Politics • Views: 35,515

We’re down to the bare metal now. Today the Supreme Court struck down a California law, ruling that anti-choice “pregnancy centers” don’t have to inform people that they’re unlicensed, don’t have to have a medical professional on staff, and don’t have to inform women about publicly funded abortion services.

The Court has given the anti-choice far right a license to lie and deceive women with impunity. It’s a major blow against women’s rights.

But even worse, they upheld Donald Trump’s racist Muslim ban.

The President then called the ruling “a tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution” and said he felt vindicated. “This ruling is also a moment of profound vindication following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country,” Trump said.

This is incredibly disheartening, and it’s why the Republican Party won’t oppose Trump, no matter how obviously unfit for office he is. He’s making all their dreams of a regressive America come true.

And thus years of assertions by “serious” conservatives that they’re not anti-immigration are proven to be totally meaningless.

IF it can even begin to be cleaned up, that is. Even if the next SCOTUS appointment were made by a D, there’s still a good chance that the vast majority of things that make us different from 1955, if not 1915, socially; are locked behind a door labelled “Constitutional amendment required” unless we expand the court.

I think the conditions aren’t that dissimilar. Under economic depression, people are angry, resentful, hopeless, and ready to latch on to any dictator that offers them a chance to validate their anger.

That’s exactly the condition that FOX created in Trumpers over the last 8-12 years. There’s no difference. For Trumpers, they may as well have been living in the Dust Bowl and undergoing systematic disappearance and torture at the hands of an oppressive regime. For them, their kids and friends were under constant threat of death or worse. Some were already being killed by the Democrats. Their poverty and despair was hopeless and never-ending. Their freedoms were completely eradicated and they lived in constant fear of brownshirts kicking in their doors.

The fact that none of this was actually true makes no difference. Facts and reality do not matter. In their world, all of this was true, and so they behaved just as people do when things really are that bad.

So no, I don’t think things will be worse when there is real economic depression. To those acting out of resentment, they were already there anyway.

Trump made it explicitly clear all through the campaign that he wanted a white Christian only immigration policy.

He called it a Muslim ban. He didn’t want Mexicans and other nonwhites coming in. He called them animals and rapists and murderers.

This is all on the public record.

This Court - the Roberts court - decided that the evidence didn’t matter.

They ruled to affirm Trump’s muslim ban anyways.

So today Trump is emboldened to again explicitly state he wants a white Christian only immigration policy. That’s what he stands for. It’s a white nationalist policy. It’s a white supremacist policy, and it is abhorrent, and leads the nation to a very dark place.

We’ve been down this road before in history. The Nazis did the same exact thing - swap out Muslim for Jew and Mexicans for Jews, and you get the same thing.

In fact, the same American Nazi Party that Trump lifted his lingo from backed refugee bans for Jews trying to escape the Nazis. They’re now doing the same with refugees from elsewhere in the world trying to flee violence.

Trump wants to end legal immigration as we know it, even though it’s powered the US economy for decades.

Trump’s going to make the sun set on American hegemony through both domestic/foreign policy choices, and I again ask why would he do that when all of his policies do not favor America, but rather those who aren’t in trade wars with the US and who benefit from Trump’s leadership vacuum internationally.

Russia. It always leads back there.

Russia backs BREXIT and Trump’s policies, because they inure benefit to Russia, and Russia doesn’t care that we’re shooting ourselves in the feet (or condemning minorities to a meager existence, with deprived rights, etc.).

After 8 years, the Dem president will be trashed as ‘not fixing things fast enough’, and the electorate will decide it’s the perfect time to give the GOP a chance again, because Dems will have just proven that they deserve to be treated as wholly illegitimate by default.

And the eternal conservatopia will roll on, unabated and it’l be all the Dems fault, because everything is always the Dems fault somehow.

Heh. Looks like Rod Dreher has permanently banned me, after only publishing about half of my dozen or so comments over the past year on his site. I long since deleted my bookmark, but it’s been the last right wing blog I’ve still checked at times. I think I’ll content myself with the quotes I read here, at Balloon Juice, etc.
There are still a lot of liberals more patient than I who post good comments on his site. I particularly like this comment, from today:
Dux Bellorum, Austinopole says:
June 26, 2018 at 1:05 pm
I think that your involvement in the situation does not allow you to see the whole picture, as well as your natural sympathies for the people involved.
This is really odd, because you can accurately perceive how apartheid actually works: it does not use legal power to stop people from helping the oppressed class, it just clarifies what will happen to the oppressed class who try to resist. Compliance with the standards of apartheid happens entirely by volition. To use a particularly resonant example, there’s no mass population of lunch counter proprietors anxious to serve sandwiches to black people, but held back by the law. All those lunch counter owners, clothing stores, book stores, etc used the law to *express* what they believed and clarify what would happen to a black person who dared step out of line.
This is the real danger of apartheid, that it arises entirely from volition, and why public accommodation laws are required. Public accommodation laws are what prevent groups of people with a lot of power, whether a minority who have a lot of money, or a majority with a lot of votes, from really screwing everyone else.
And everyone who actually is a religious minority understands this. Every one of us whose religious practice causes others no harm is protected by the original RFRA. You talk about this bill a lot, but seemingly dishonestly. The original bill came up to protect a Native American who wanted to use peyote for his religious ceremonies but was prosecuted for buying a drug. The law gave him an exception. This is similar to schools giving Sikh boys an exception to beard and long hair policies, Jewish boys the right to wear kippot, etc. These religious accommodations cause nobody any harm and are at best mild quirks. Maybe such a law being enforced would have required the public schools not to punish me for wanting to go to Hindu holidays. Who knows?
But what you want in an RFRA is a law that permits you to do harm to others in the name of your religion. That’s not at all what the original bill did, nor is it morally defensible in any principled way. What it seems you want is for any one individual or business to be able to do whatever it wants to do to whomever it wants to do in the name of religion, and that’s nuts.
The other thing that’s nuts to me is that you seem to believe that groups that do these horrible things should still be given tax exemption and access to resources, and suffer no public reputation consequence for their behaviour, as if joining hands to create voluntary apartheid for gay people, lower caste people, people in mixed marriages (Jewish/gentile), etc. Is morally indistinguishable from wearing a turban or a Magen David on a chain. That’s also nuts to me.
You can see over and over again how horrible it is when people you like are denied accommodation, but seemingly not see how horrible it is when people to whom you are not sympathetic are denied it. And you seem to think that it’s okay for your tribe to have their own special colleges, clubs, etc. AND have unrestricted access to the common resources. I don’t get that at all.
I am a practicing Hindu who prays and meditates for two hours every day. I don’t for the life of me think that my temple should get special privileges or that I should be able to demand that a university adhere to my particular quirks. If you folks want your tax deductible fortresses where you can be horrible to others, why shouldn’t we all demand that you run there?
Your law of merited impossibility is the kind of thing that betrays your perspective, while to the rest of us, what we see is, “Nothing will happen to you that hasn’t been happening to the rest of us, but at least nobody will have special rights.”

Book recommendation, but don’t take my word for it. From wikipedia:

U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower read The True Believer in 1952, gave copies to friends, and recommended it to others. In 1956, Look magazine ran an article calling Hoffer “Ike’s Favorite Author”.[17]

Hillary Clinton, in her 2017 book What Happened, about her loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race, cited The True Believer as a book she recommended to her staff during the campaign.[21]

The True Believer: Thoughts On The Nature Of Mass Movements is a 1951 social psychology book by American writer Eric Hoffer, in which the author discusses the psychological causes of fanaticism.

One unobvious idea, contrary to most folks “common sense”, that Hoffer put forth was that the most likely time(s) for fanaticism to get a foothold and thrive is not when conditions are at their worst, but rather, when socio-economic conditions are generally improving, altho unevenly.

I’m sorry guys. I’m just really pissed off at the constant double standards. We’re told by Romney “You just want free stuff.” Trump accuses our leaders of literally favoring gang members. But one business owner in small town Virginia refuses to serve Trump’s liar of a press secretary and it’s time that we consider the poor Trumpers feelings. Pardon me but that’s bullshit. The Trumpers don’t care about those children who may never see their parents again but we’re supposed to care because a public official may actually have to deal with confrontation?!?!? This after the Tea Party assholes actually talked about 2nd amendment solutions ot Health Care Reform. I try to be a reasonable man but fuck the right in this country. I hope they implode and every last Republican loses their re-election this fall.

Instead they’re treated as ‘real America’, the only true voters, the only real valid voters. Anything else is simply too fake, too ‘identity politics’ to bother with. We’re not real to them, we only exist as adversary and villain.

And the erasure is almost complete.

Yep. A bunch of feckless cowards too cowardly to acknowledge that the times have changed get treated like victims while the people they want to treat terribly get treated as criminal invaders or footnotes.

And they never ever mention this:

Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign is suspended from accessing the voter database. The Democratic National Committee made the move after they learned one of Sanders’ staffers accessed Hillary Clinton’s confidential voter information. According to Sanders’ spokesperson, Michael Briggs, that staffer was immediately fired.

Why is it so quiet out there downtown? Here is why

More than two dozen immigration activists were arrested as they gathered outside a federal court building in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday morning during a planned visit by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Police were heard declaring an unlawful assembly after a line of demonstrators, among them several clergy members, was seen linking arms across Spring Street outside the U.S. Attorney’s Office building, blocking the road to traffic as they chanted “Kids belong at home, not in cages.”

Many of the protestors wore children’s onesies pinned to their chests to represent the immigrant youth separated from their parents by the Trump administration. Some also wore blue arm bands, indicating they intended to be taken into custody for their actions.

So far, 25 people have been arrested for failure to disperse, said Los Angeles Police Officer Jeff Lee. People were seen being taken away in handcuffs around 10 a.m., hours after they had assembled.

Mark Sumner:

The ‘civility’ debate isn’t about language, it’s about power

It’s not simply that while the right punches, the press plays stenographer, and when the left fights back, they declare fighting out of bounds. It’s not even about the incredible spectacle of journalists who have personally been on the receiving end of both spit and thrown bottles while Trump rants about ending “political correctness,” suddenly chiding the left for refusing to be good little frogs while the water boils.

It’s that the demand being made for “civility” isn’t about language at all. It’s about throwing a ring of protection around the powerful. It’s about pretending that people whose actions wreck millions of lives on a whim, are cocooned from the consequences of their actions, not just because they have money, and connections, and resources, but because their power puts them on a different plane.

2016 Flashback from the lunatic fringe GOP mainstream:

Tony Perkins: Musicals are nothing but ‘homosexual propaganda’

Tony Perkins, the president of the ever-sinister Family Research Council, is very angry at US Ambassador Samantha Power for taking some of her colleagues to see a production of the lesbian-themed Fun Home, a Tony-winning Broadway musical.
“The State Department already has an official LGBT envoy — it doesn’t need two! Tell that to Samantha Power, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., who is determined to join the administration’s goodwill tour for homosexuality. Like Secretary John Kerry, who seems oblivious to any problem not preceded by the letters L-G-B-T, Power is adding to the president’s embarrassing diplomatic legacy by trying to export Obama’s sexual extremism to a world preoccupied by far more important issues.

On Tuesday, Power, who has the ear of some of the international community’s most important leaders, decided to spend her influence persuading them on the need to celebrate homosexuality. This week, she hosted 15 U.N. Ambassadors at a gay Broadway musical called ‘Fun Home. Representatives from Russia, Namibia, and other more culturally conservative countries sat through New York’s latest sexual propaganda, followed by a personal thank you from Power herself. “Thank you,” she told the cast, ‘for bringing all of this home in a way that resolutions and statements never can.’”(emphasis added)

The right’s affinity for Russia is not based entirely on shady finance and helpful propaganda.

I get the impression that many BernieBros™, either due to their young age or past apathy that they had the luxury of having under Obama, started paying attention to presidential and party politics only after Bernie was running. They don’t know how anything works, probably slept through any kind of civics class (assuming they still have that in HS), and think because it doesn’t work they way they think it should, that it *has* to be a conspiracy or designed to screw them over. There is an overlap with the Alex Jones crowd.

Susan Sarandon (yeah, that bitch again) had particular reason TO KNOW BETTER, GODDAMIT!! She was the biggest Naderite in 2000; “Gore’s not liberal enough, both parties are the same, vote Ralph to send a message to the Dems, bring on the revolution, etc etc etc”.

Michael Moore at least learned his lesson from that experience; he’ll never make the same mistake again. Susan didn’t learn a damn thing. (unless, I dunno, maybe she’s a closet fascist pretending to be liberal because sub-rosa ratfucking is more effective than openly espousing a desire for the results she ends up contributing to).

Right on cue, Fred Hiatt’s Washington Post editorial page, which has no compunction about publishing the words of torture-enthusiast Marc Thiessen, blurted out the most embarrassing single paragraph written about the events at the Red Hen…

We nonetheless would argue that Ms. Huckabee, and Ms. Nielsen and Mr. Miller, too, should be allowed to eat dinner in peace. Those who are insisting that we are in a special moment justifying incivility should think for a moment how many Americans might find their own special moment. How hard is it to imagine, for example, people who strongly believe that abortion is murder deciding that judges or other officials who protect abortion rights should not be able to live peaceably with their families?

How did any higher primate write this paragraph without coughing up a lung? How did any sentient mammal not red-pencil this paragraph into oblivion? How did Post truck drivers not save their employers severe embarrassment by tossing that entire day’s print run into the Potomac?

We care more about perceived civility than the actions of those who are on the receiving end of supposed incivility. I’ll be civil to you if you deserve it. If you are implementing in Nielsen’s case or lying about a policy separating children from their families, I owe you nothing but contempt.

Have they in the past three presidential election cycles ever chided the conservatives in this country for their words and behavior?

They seem to know how nasty the right can be, but they never seem to ask them to act better, be more civil, etc.

I think I know the answer, but I just want to ask some of the long-time NYT readers here if they have done similar articles about wingnut behavior.

The most important truth in US politics is that the Republican party is a proto-fascist death cult completely incapable of any kind of ‘governance’ more complicated than Trumpist graft and corruption.

The great both siderist lie of the political main stream media is that this fact about the Republican party is studiously ignored, and the media continues to treat Republicans as if they were respectable people with respectable opinions about which reasonable people can disagree.

The media should treat Republicans as deplorables with opinions that are stupid, bigoted and/or cruel which no civilized person should be obliged to take seriously.

re: #145 EPR-radar

The most important truth in US politics is that the Republican party is a proto-fascist death cult completely incapable of any kind of ‘governance’ more complicated than Trumpist graft and corruption.

The great both siderist lie of the political main stream media is that this fact about the Republican party is studiously ignored, and the media continues to treat Republicans as if they were respectable people with respectable opinions about which reasonable people can disagree.

The media should treat Republicans as deplorables with opinions that are stupid, bigoted and/or cruel which no civilized person should be obliged to take seriously.

this is the exact same problem with anti-science, global warming, vaxxers, alternative medicine, flat earth, ghosts, ufos, intelligent design, psi, esp, bigfeet and cryptos, and on and on and on

they are not refutable or falsifiable
their models are based on the assumed reality of supernatural phenomena
they are not objective or lend to independent replication

this nonsense is not science and should not be treated as if it is
40-50+ years of doing that has gotten us intelligent design actually being debated for school cirricula

these things are not real. never were. it’s time we started calling these people the loons that they are

I mean, there’s really no question Trump is racist, and his policies are racist.

And there’s no question Trump is stupid, and his policies are stupid.

SO, yeah, MAYBE people who aren’t racist and stupid support a man whose entire policy schtick is racism and stupidity, but it’s kinda hard to see why.

I’m sure Milo was not the slightest bit a Nazi until people called him a Nazi for hanging out with Nazis. Here in America, we now believe that what turns a regular person into a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist or a Nazi is the prospect of being called a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist or a Nazi, or, indeed, even seeing someone else being called a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist or a Nazi, even if that person CLEARLY IS a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist or a Nazi.

He made the decision “because of conviction and principle,” the shop owner told CBS affiliate WDBJ 7 at the time. “I have a difference of opinion of the folks in that campaign, that’s what it was. Also, taking a stance for my faith, my faith in God.”

Rod Dreher can be summed up with this definition of conservatism:

Conservatism is the the belief that there are some groups who should be protected by the law but not constrained by it, while other groups must be constrained by the law but never protected by it.

“True democracy is based on the unalterable subjection of the negro and the supremacy of the white race.”

How does this make any fucking sense?

It doesn’t, unless you live in a completely binary world. Trump lives in a completely binary world. North Korea was the worst place in the world, KJU the most dangerous madman in the world until he said something nice about Trump and now he’s the best guy around and he’s going to make North Korea into a great country.

See, for most of us, KJU was a bad guy because he did, and does, bad things. To Trump, KJU was a bad guy because he said bad things about Trump. Once he says good things, he automatically becomes a good guy.

Harley Davidson was good, but then they said something bad about Trump so now they’re bad.

We’re being governed by Anthony.

It’s good that you done that. Real good!

2) Just exactly who the fuck does he think pays tariffs, anyway? He keeps talking about our trading partners paying the tariffs, but that’s not even remotely how it works. Those tariffs will be paid by consumers, who will find things cost a lot more suddenly.

So, Trump and the GOP will have managed to cut the tax burden on the rich whose consumption is a much smaller part of their income, and shifted that burden onto the middle and working classes, whose consumption is essentially all of their income.

Oh, and at the same time, they’ll be losing jobs because other countries will impost tariffs on our goods, and multinationals will shift production out of the US.

In other news - The Kinks are getting back together!

Ray Davies has surprised the music world after announcing that The Kinks are planning to reunite after 20 years apart.

The band has endured one of the longest feuds in UK music since disbanding in the late 90s, but now appear to have buried the hatchet.

Davies revealed the news in an interview with Channel 4 News, stating that he was “making a new Kinks album” with brother Dave Davies and Mick Avory.

“The trouble is, the two remaining members, my brother Dave and Mick, never got along very well. But I’ve made that work in the studio and it’s fired me up to make them play harder, and with fire,” Davies said.

The group last performed together in 1996 and split following rising tensions between the two Davies brothers.

Ray’s obviously having a little fun with that remark about Dave and Avery. The Brothers Davies wrote the book on sibling rivalries in rock.

Talking in general about groups like AQ, ISIL etc who can keep bombing and killing and killing and killing, and you can compare that to the pathological trolls on the web who stalk women and post revenge porn or photoshopped porn (sometimes for years) for lulz.

Groups and people who do this sort of thing can escalate outrages past your ability to ignore or refusal to engage….and AQ was determined to make this into a paradigm about Islam vs western modernity. I figured they succeed eventually when they got the body count high enough…even if most of the rest of Islam and the world at large didn’t want that.

Okay, let’s unpack this a little. First, like I said above, Trump’s talking as if the tariffs aren’t a temporary measure designed to open markets abroad, but rather a permanent feature that we should expect to last for years.

Second, countries that sell goods here aren’t ‘raiding the Treasury’. What the fuck does that even mean, that he sees Americans’ money as HIS money? and here Americans are giving HIS money to foreigners?

Third, we didn’t have income tax, because we had a smaller military, no Social Security, no Medicare. He’s increased the military budget and promised no cuts to Social Security or Medicare.

Fourth, no debt - blithering fucking idiot just exploded the deficit with his fucking tax cuts!

If it’s written in Russian, If it’s written in English should the Trumpenreich continue, and possibly if it’s written in Chinese, they’ll see him as a principled hero (*spit!*)

Chinese seems most likely to me, and if it’s in that language we’ll all be irrelevant once we go bankrupt and the PRC takes possession. Honestly, that might be just as well.

Trump is getting awfully mouthy. He is set to piss off the entire world with this immigration stuff. He’s putting himself in a tough spot too. I guess he doesn’t plan on going anywhere outside the U.S. again. The hate will be strong.

The problem is that “the whole world” isn’t yet ready to act appropriately (and much of that world, remember, is on Donny’s side against those “elitists”). When I see flights from the US canceled or our ambassadors told that they’re personae non grata, then I’ll start to believe.

I don’t know if we beat the after-work rush, or if we’re a lot more outnumbered in this neighborhood than I thought we were.

It was one thing to consider what we have to bring to the resistance. Time, some effort, maybe donations. Phone calls and persuasion. Then it gets to where we have a strike and hit the streets. And there, jobs on the line, money short, scared of the authorities ability to make us hurt-we find out what we will sacrifice. 25 gave up their freedom if only briefly today. Given zero reports of violence or vandalism i tip my hat to them.

re: #332 Blind Frog Belly White

I said this yesterday, but the whole cry for civility and the idea that we shouldn’t be mean to Trumpkins or call them stupid or racist is all about white privilege.

I’ll be honest - Trump’s policies are unlikely to negatively impact my income, or my personal freedom. I have the luxury, if I choose, of not caring. I have the luxury of being able to say that friends and relatives who voted for and who still support Trump are ‘good people’, because I’m not in the crosshairs.

That luxury is the essence of white privilege. I get to choose whether or not to care about politics, because its effect on me personally will be small either way. And if I DO care, I’ll get shit from my white friends for being ‘hateful’, and be told that people who support horrible racist policies are not ‘bad people’, they just didn’t like Hillary Clinton, or they wanted change, or they’re frustrated by Washington.

I feel you, and would like to point out the constant desire of the right wing to turn the GWoT into a religious conflict. Incessant drumbeat even. Like since the creation of Israel incessant drumbeat to bring about a holy war/end times, and their insinuation into places like Colorado Springs, GdubsBush, the one optic I forget the name of that had a bible quote on the side, etc.

We got marginal rain, less than .5 inches. The San Juan Mountains fared better, some places got anywhere between .5 and 1.5 inches of rain. That significantly slowed the spread of the 416 Fire near Durango.

Other than the fact that photo of her is really scary, the whole thing is bullshit—she’s not going to facilities where the kids are who have been stripped from their parents (or at least she didn’t last week)

The facility in McAllen, Tex., is operated by Lutheran Social Services. Directors told the first lady that the more than 50 children housed there are ages 12 and older and that all but six had arrived at the border without their parents. That means they are not the toddlers and young children whose anguish at being recently separated from their families has fueled broad criticism of the administration.

It was a fucking photo op, complete with “Welcome First Lady” posters signed by kids with remarkably similar handwriting.

We’ve been inflicting trauma on kids from south of us for years. Even on kids who were born here. I used to post a lot of Pages about it.

The first emergency phone call of the morning is the one that wakes her up, and Nora Sandigo, 48, answers one of the three phones she keeps within reach of her bed. “Hello. How can I help?” she says, because someone is always asking for her help. She gets up, pours herself coffee and takes down notes as she listens. “Sebastian. 12. U.S. citizen,” she writes. “Father deported. Mother detained. Drs appointment today, 2:45.”

“Okay, yes. I can do this,” she says, and soon she is in her minivan, sorting through a notebook that contains her to-do list for the day. She has to prepare lunch for 120 children, deliver school supplies to 13 others, drop five off at schools across greater Miami, help find housing for three, take two to doctor appointments, one to a psychologist and one to visit a parent detained for immigration violations.

It seems weird, till you look back at how pretty much every protest movement has been received. Invariably, well-meaning people who are largely unaffected by what’s being protested urge those who are protesting to be ‘civil’, be polite, don’t rock the boat, don’t poke the bear, don’t make “them” angry. Like the people who say that black athletes should protest in some way that doesn’t reduce their enjoyment of the game.

Well, at least someone at the NYT is thinking straight.

Whether or not you think public shaming should be happening, it’s important to understand why it’s happening. It’s less a result of a breakdown in civility than a breakdown of democracy. Though it’s tiresome to repeat it, Donald Trump eked out his minority victory with help from a hostile foreign power. He has ruled exclusively for his vengeful supporters, who love the way he terrifies, outrages and humiliates their fellow citizens. Trump installed the right-wing Neil Gorsuch in the Supreme Court seat that Republicans stole from Barack Obama. Gorsuch, in turn, has been the fifth vote in decisions on voter roll purges and, on Monday, racial gerrymandering that will further entrench minority rule.

All over the country, Republican members of Congress have consistently refused to so much as meet with many of the scared, furious citizens they ostensibly represent. A great many of these citizens are working tirelessly to take at least one house of Congress in the midterms — which will require substantially more than 50 percent of total votes, given structural Republican advantages — so that the country’s anti-Trump majority will have some voice in the federal government.

But unless and until that happens, millions and millions of Americans watch helplessly as the president cages children, dehumanizes immigrants, spurns other democracies, guts health care protections, uses his office to enrich himself and turns public life into a deranged phantasmagoria with his incontinent flood of lies. The civility police might point out that many conservatives hated Obama just as much, but that only demonstrates the limits of content-neutral analysis. The right’s revulsion against a black president targeted by birther conspiracy theories is not the same as the left’s revulsion against a racist president who spread birther conspiracy theories.

Facebook Post

His average reader, though, probably thinks a communist is something like a Muslim, but with booze and naked feminists rather than burqas.
Lopez Obrador has been a familiar figure in Mexican politics for over 30 years. As mayor of Mexico City he hired none other than Rudy Giuliani to design a plan for reducing crime. Needless to say he does not resemble a communist in any rational sense.

Hating Trump is the most perfectly rational thing to be found in politics. It’s like an axiom for reality based political science — nothing can be deduced until hatred of Trump and all his works is adopted.

López Obrador is the candidate in the 2018 presidential race for “Juntos Haremos Historia,” a coalition between the left-wing Labor Party, right-wing Social Encounter Party, and MORENA. He has proposed increases in financial aid for students and the elderly, amnesty for some drug war criminals,[12] universal access to public colleges[13], cancellation of the under-construction New Mexico City International Airport,[14] a referendum over an energy reform that ended Pemex’s monopoly in the oil industry,[15] stimulation of the country’s agricultural sector, delay of the renegotiations of NAFTA until after the elections,[16][12] building of more oil refineries, increased spending for welfare, cutting of politicians’ salaries to avoid debt spending or higher taxes[17] and decentralization of the executive cabinet by moving Secretaries from the capital to states.[18] Polls show him as the leading candidate.[19][20][21][22][23][24]

They haven’t lost them just yet. When they do, and when DT doesn’t rescue them, then is when they might turn against him. Being dimwits, they’re likely to decide that the whole system is against them (only the one you aligned yourselves with, dumbasses) and stay home on election days. Well, they get the feeling of freedom to express the hatred they learn from FOX in public.

These people aren’t any dumber than normal. They just watch a lot of FOX. People can be convinced of anything. They can be convinced that their job loss is for another reason. They can be convinced that Democrats and brown people took their job. They can be convinced that their job loss is a good thing. They can be convinced that they didn’t actually lose their job at all, if they are deeply indoctrinated into the cult.

This is just one of many reasons that there is no point trying to reach a Trumper. Nor is there any point changing your behaviour, civil or otherwise, out of concern that it will energise or anger Trumpers. Reality has no bearing on what Trumpers think, believe, or do. Nothing does, except their Facebook posts, their Youtube videos, and FOX.

“López Obrador is the candidate in the 2018 presidential race for “Juntos Haremos Historia,”a coalition between the left-wing Labor Party, right-wing Social Encounter Party, and MORENA.”

Look, the “commie” is teaming up with the fundies

en.wikipedia.org

The Social Encounter Party was founded in 2006 by Dr. Hugo Eric Flores Cervantes, a pastor of a Neo-Pentecostal church that supported Felipe Calderón in the 2006 presidential election.[3] …
The PES tends to include many strands of Christian humanist thinking and is generally socially conservative, though Flores has stated that it is a “family” party.[4] [20] The Baja California state party uses a stylized ichthus in its logo, which is not used by the national organization.[1]

The party characterizes itself as the “party of the family”. It opposes same-sex marriage and was responsible for reforms to the Baja California constitution in 2008 that established marriage as “between one man and one woman”.[5] In 2015, the PES gubernatorial candidate in the state of San Luis Potosí compared homosexuality to drug trafficking and violence.[21] Likewise, it opposes abortion and pornographic magazines.[6]

Other proposals made by the PES include shifting the collection of value-added tax to the states instead of the federal government and consolidating it with income tax.[22]

Unlike other Mexican parties, PES expresses outright support for Israeli settlements on the West Bank.[23]

As a senior in High School, a new student arrived from Nicaragua. His father had been an economist for the Samosa regime but was considered too leftist. He fled with his family to Florida and began working as an economist for the Sandinistas. The boys snuck back and fought for them as well. After the revolution he fled again since by this point he was a “counter-revolutionary”. Well, that spring I got to take Econ 101 at the University as a HS student. Guess who was the teacher teaching us Supply Side economics and guess who was the student giving Marxist answers back. He did give me an A for the course :)

Hurricane Ridge in Olympic Nat Park. About 17 miles south of Port Angeles. I was there last week as part of a two week vacation in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Hiking and walking on beaches for the most part. Plus drinking a lot of beer and eating a lot of seafood.

Might have made a terrible mistake today though. In a hotel just south of Seattle since I have to return the rental car to SeaTac tomorrow and start catching flights to get back to the East Coast. Just listened to Rachel, so now the Supreme Court is also in trump’s pocket. Looking like Russia and China and the Philippines. Waiting for term limits to disappear. Declaring a state of emergency followed by a proclamation

Good to hear. I really appreciate how responsive he is whenever I email him about a pressing issue. Both of my Senators are great guys.

Just over the bridge from me, on the Kitsap peninsula.

I drove through there going between SeaTac and Port Angeles. Came back the long way round via Oregon.

So far in my congressional district, Republicans are outvoting Democrats almost three to one.

*sigh*

My wife and I voted at about 6:30, and we were number 14 and 15 all day.

Dems better wake the fuck up.

I really like Van Hollen. Maybe not future Pres material but a foreign policy whiz.

Is it quite like Cantor? Cantor was number 2 in the majority party. Crowley is leadership but he’s number 4 in the minority party. Anyhow. I don’t know enough to say whether this is good or bad.

Sounds nothing but bad to me. Five more months of BernieBro screeching and this Ocasio woman joining the “Democrats are evil” chorus. Thanks a lot.

They’ve had since 2016. I guess it hasn’t gotten bad enough yet.

My understanding is that changing demographics played a role here.

Me + @acosta confirm: @WhiteHouse press secretary Sarah Sanders is expected to receive Secret Service protection as soon as Wednesday, 2 sources familiar tell @CNN, but they did not specify when or how long it will last

So does that mean that the SS is going to force the restaurant to serve her even if they don’t want her there?

Definitely seems to be an intimidation play imo.

To be fair, we went at dinner time. A lot of Long Islanders work in the city, and their trains don’t even get out here until almost 7:00. I was surprised there wasn’t more turnout earlier, though.

It used to happen two or three times a century. Much more common now.
