You know what civil looks like? Democrats helping other Democrats after losing to them in the primaries. And even better, not waiting until right before the election.

Crowley is a class act. We’ve had this here in VA-10 too. I met Jennifer Wexton yesterday and she praised each of her five former opponents by name and cited how they’ll be able to help out. I voted for one of them but Jennifer has my full support for November.

And, by the way, isn’t this how primaries are supposed to work: The people pick the candidate they like the best? And then afterwards, we all come together and defeat the fascist on the other side,

Yep. I’ve backed three primary losers the last year. Each and every one rallied their troops. And honestly doing so is how we nearly won the Va House of Delegates last fall.

Reading towards the end of last thread re: turnout in midterms.

Yes. There’s definite apathy. And that’s how we got fucking Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. Somehow we have to reach people and get them to understand that our democracy isn’t to be taken lightly and that midterms fucking matter as much as Presidential-year elections. The Constitution and institutions will only protect us when BOTH parties are bound to it.

How do we do that? I have no damn clue.

In skiing there’s two ways of judging greatness. A clock. Or five judges. I dabbled in racing and freestyle when I was a teenager, I did way more racing in those formidable years. It’s a pure athleticism, you against the clock.

33
teleskiguy  Jun 26, 2018 • 9:27:42pm

One thing I learned from my days ski racing; you have to imagine yourself as a beach ball rolling down the hill, finding the path of least resistance. Your job is to find that path while you are sliding downhill, in the moment.

It wasn’t an AH-HA moment, it came to me over a period of a few winters when I was young. But the moment I learned that… well, I’ve done this since then.

That actually is how catnip works. The receptors in their feline brains have to be given time to reset before the stuff has any effect again.

The tabby (now grown more than in the picture) has very floofy belly fur, but attempting to rub it is a trap - the claws immediately come out.

I just watched the Ocasio ad — very powerful. MSNBC made the point that Crowley didn’t take the race seriously; his position was handed to him in the 1990’s and he never faced any real opposition. The composition of the district has changed dramatically over the years and she represents the newer residents. In any case low turnout can lead to unexpected results, but she looks like a very promising candidate. When she takes office, my guess is that many of her staff may be those currently be working for Crowley. The Democrats in Washington need more new blood and she certainly provides it.

Geez I ran openly as a member of the DSA and got elected in an overwhelmingly Republican town (twice), in 2014 winning over the town gun shop owner in an open carry state. It’s not like we’re marching with Castro and Guevara to overthrow the government.

Presuming she wins her district in the General Election (and I imagine she will), she will be taking her foreign policy degree into the House (and after the Dumpster fire we have in the White House, we’re going to need people who understand foreign policy).

Moreover, when bills come up for votes, they are either “aye” or “nay” or “abstain” or “absent.” Assuming she is not going to abstain or be absent, I presume she will cast “nay” on any GOP rodent copulation that comes her way.

Western Nebraska news:

California pot shops slash prices ahead of new testing rules (goes to the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, more at the link):

Bargain basement bud is on the menu in California, but you need to act fast to cash in on the cheap weed.

Regulations being phased in six months after the state broadly legalized marijuana require that pot sold after Saturday meet strict quality standards, so retailers unloading untested inventory are offering blowout prices.

Deep discounts on everything from edibles to joints reflect the last days of the heady first phase of legal recreational pot. They could be followed by empty shelves as many stores scramble to restock with properly tested and packaged products.

“You can smell it. There’s a certain desperation from stores that bought too much and they have to dump it,” said John Atari, CEO of Source Cannabis Farms, a licensed cultivator in Los Angeles. “There’s going to be a big shortage of clean product come July 1.”

Well, I stay away from it, primarily because of my position in my town (I imagine a lot of people don’t admit what they do here though, and Colorado is just down the road a bit), secondarily because I am wary of VA testing (they’re not supposed to pass along records to the local police here or to the DEA but one big happy government), plus not sure how it might or might not interfere with my epilepsy meds.

Well, “medical” is not equivalent to “recreational.” In theory medical cannabis is legal in Nebraska (but there is no mechanism to get approval for it).

As for epilepsy, certain components of CBD have been shown to have positive effect on pediatric epilepsy, but I don’t think I can convince anyone I am a five-year-old. /s (The FDA just approved a new CBD drug the other day, which is legal throughout the country, regardless of state laws.)

Grand mal guy here, haven’t had a seizure in over 35 years though. The last one was in my mid-20’s. I still get some of the aura stuff but nothing ever happens. I attribute my lack of seizures (and no need for medication) to weed as that was all I changed. The more I smoked weed, the fewer seizures I had so I kept it up and they eventually stopped. I won’t say how much I smoke but a truckload daily would be a good starting point. ;) I quit torching a bong or pipe full of weed a few years ago and switched to vaping (dabs via bong & pen).

CBDs are what do the job but I’ve never been one to pass on the THC too. :)

Regarding the testing for sales, we went through that here in Oregon when we made the transition to required testing. It was dry for a bit but it picked up after about two months. Now we’re buried in choices here and that’s just fine with me. As we’re just across the border from them, I expect to see more than a few Californians hitting up our shops once the drought hits there.

Time to stock up!

There seems to be some dispute as to the accuracy of that quote. Harley’s CEO did make a statement about Trump, but the word ‘moron’ was not in it.

The statement was made in a telephone interview with Bloomberg that published Tuesday. Levatich said the decision to build in Thailand was “Plan B” after the U.S. abandoned TPP.

“We would rather not make the investment in (the Thailand plant), but that’s what’s necessary to access a very important market,” Levatich told Bloomberg. “It is a direct example of how trade policies could help this company, but we have to get on with our work to grow the business by any means possible, and that’s what we’re doing.”

My theory (which is mine, and which belongs to me) is that Daily Caller is trying to stir up the MAGAts to hate on H-D.

Carter btw is the self described socialist that got elected in the VA legislature. Danica being Danica Roem. I’m fine with this. I’m sure Crowley was a good representative but Ocasio earned that nomination. I don’t like the Bros attacking anyone who supported HRC and as much as I dislike Sanders, I don’t think anyone who supported him is a bad candidate or person. In fact, one of my best friends I’ve made from campaign work is someone who was inspired to get into liberal politics because of him. And he’s a pragmatist.

Tons of derp in that thread “what about North Korea and Venezuela?”

Those were added on the third attempt to make it not look like a Muslim ban. Funny how the banned countries are those without Trump properties, and the nations which actually had citizens carry out attacks against our country are still allowed to travel here.

NK and VZ are really odd examples, too. Both countries are basket-cases, and denying admittance to anyone from those countries is cruel, and honestly, more than a little baffling.

Iran is not exactly a basket-case but the U.S. has effectively been in engaged in a cold war with that country since 1980 and has been overtly and covertly seeking its leaders overthrow, so why we would not admit people from there is again kind of stupid.

churches et al will be taxed on fringe benefits

When Congress passes a 500-page bill with a 600-page explanation that no member read before the vote, which took place 4 days after they were released, well, strange stuff can happen. It is only now becoming clear that one consequence of the tax-cut bill will be to tax nonprofits, such as churches, hospitals, orchestras, and other historically exempt organizations at a rate of 21% on fringe benefits they pay their employees.

Local Council-woman tries her hand at online shaming, gets shamed for trying:

When Albany Common Councilwoman Judy Doesschate saw a Mohawk Ambulance double-parked outside a Stewart’s Shops on New Scotland Avenue, she took a picture. She also took a picture of the crew inside the store.

She then posted the pictures Monday evening on her Common Councilmember Facebook page, and asked what others thought about the ambulance being double-parked. “People in my neighborhood are very concerned about traffic and pedestrian safety, and I was hoping this post would make people think twice about double-parking, or illegally parking, in this neighborhood,” Doesschate, who represents the 9th Ward in Albany, said in an interview Tuesday. That wasn’t the direction the conversation took online.

Commenters quickly jumped on Doesschate, expressing outrage that she would target emergency workers and calling for her to lose her job. It was shared nearly 900 times as of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, and had over 2,000 comments. Albany City Hall had received many calls expressing outrage over the post as well, city officials said.

Doesschate pulled it down around noon.

If the administration would hit him back, and they have to some extent, the “Deep State” State Department applied some sanctions. But Drump has been resistent, and if Dems don’t make an issue out of this, of DJT’s warm support of Putin and his attempt to thwart the special counsel investigation, they will have failed mightily.

I’m pretty sure most Americans rate the sanctions of Putin around the same level as pineapple on pizza.

San Francisco has an economic experiment well underway. The results are telling. But does the attention to the SF regulations and tech money overlay obscure the bigger picture? This is what inflation does.
nytimes.com

San Francisco’s tech riches have fed demand for restaurants — and some wealthy tech workers have decided they would also like to be partners in a restaurant, opening up more investment. But as those highly paid workers have also driven demand for scarce housing, the city has struggled to keep lower-wage workers afloat.

On July 1, the minimum wage in San Francisco will hit $15 an hour, following incremental raises from $10.74 in 2014. The city also requires employers with at least 20 workers to pay health care costs beyond the mandates of the Affordable Care Act, in addition to paid sick leave and parental leave.

Despite those benefits, many workers say they can’t afford to live here, or to stay in the industry. And partly as a result of those benefits, restaurateurs say they can’t afford the workers who remain. A dishwasher can now make $18 or $19 an hour. And because of California labor laws, even tipped workers like servers earn at least the full minimum wage, unlike their peers in most other states.

You know what civil looks like? Democrats helping other Democrats after losing to them in the primaries. And even better, not waiting until right before the election.

Back in the day, I used to interact with Crowley in the NYS legislature. He was a good guy then, and his district’s demographics have changed, and this is being remarked upon by the national media as some kind of fight for the soul of the Democratic party.

It’s all bullshit. Sometimes voters decide they want someone new (did they say the same when Rangel lost his reelection bid?) Demographic changes coupled with the fact that women and minorities are leading the charge on fighting Trump and the regressive GOP policies are coming into play.

Crowley thought he had the win wrapped up and missed the sea change that happened in his district.

It’s only a good thing for Democrats - interesting things happen when people turn out for votes. And rolling back the GOP regressive agenda starts with running candidates in every election and even giving incumbents a run for their money - keep everyone on their toes so they aren’t complacent.

I’m doing family research as I often do before I start up work for the day. And I’m just struck by the “chain migration.” I have a book that I inherited from my grandfather, the book is mainly about his first cousin’s family but he’s related to her through both parents- fifth cousins via her mother and first cousins via the father. Anyhow, I’m seeing that lots people gladly sponsored people and families lived near by each other. We haven’t documented this with my mom’s mom family but that happened too and I know with two of my Dad’s great great grandfathers, a brother followed from Ireland and Germany. And you know what, I’m sure many American families are like this and we don’t give it much thought. And I guess I understand why but since “chain migration” has become a scare word in recent years. I’d call it family migration.

History of ICE has been replete with scandal. Yes, they are responsible for immigration and customs enforcement, not border control, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be reformed. BCP is border control.

The Supreme Court is expected to end its term on Wednesday with one final major case challenging public sector union fees left to decide.

The most anticipated decision of the year came Tuesday, when the court in a 5-4 decision upheld Trump’s travel ban.

That’s led to some speculation that a retirement announcement could happen on Wednesday, though there is no hard evidence one is coming.

The speculation for the last year has centered on the court’s swing voter Justice Anthony Kennedy, but some have pondered if Justice Clarence Thomas is actually going to be the one to call it quits.

Public sector unions were always compromised a bit. By their very nature, being an employee of a government means a sort of tradeoff, compared to working for a private company.

Federal employee unions are not that influential. However, I can see that at the state and local level that unions play a more important role.

But I’m just struggling to see how we can make any headway when the courts seem so perfectly stacked to ensure the GOP’s eternal fucking conservatopia remains intact. We’ve seen how much slack the electorate is willing to give us to try and clean shit up, when they think that highly of us to begin with. And with all this shit rained down, it feels like the best we will be able to do is clean up maybe even half of the mess that this disaster has managed to lay on our plate in less than 18 months.

I’m seriously looking for reasons to back off of the edge here at this point.

I think the midterms will be very favorable to us. Control of the House will mean that we can fully investigate these bastards and the R’s can’t shut it down.

Many, many people are going to have to cast provisional ballots. Gerrymandering in TX and NC continue.

The cards are stacked against America continuing to be America.

A Crowley insider told Politico that the campaign of the 10-term incumbent — and would-be future speaker of the House — underestimated the electorate’s volatility.

“About two weeks ago, three weeks ago, we had our last poll which had Joe up by about 35 points. So the electorate’s really volatile,” the insider said.
“(The) Crowley campaign had a huge field program, but it’s still a district where Bernie [Sanders] got almost 45 percent of the vote. We took it seriously, I mean we spent $1.5 million on it. … It was a bloodletting of Washington Democrats.”

Some analysts said the furor over President Trump’s immigration policy energized voters in the heavily Hispanic 14th Congressional District to go with the newcomer, who won easily with 57 percent of the vote to Crowley’s 42 percent.

Last weekend, just days before the primary, Ocasio-Cortez left New York to join protests at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Texas.

Ocasio-Cortez, a former organizer for Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, ran on a sharply liberal agenda, including abolishing ICE and making Medicare a universal program.

Crowley became just the third sitting member of Congress, and the first Democratic incumbent, to lose a primary this year — less than five months before the midterm elections.

This is why you take mental health breaks. Continually dwelling on all the horrible things happening isn’t exactly healthy, especially at the rapid fire rate they keep coming(speaking from experience here). You need to make some time for yourself and indulge in things you love and enjoy, unconcerned with the world of politics for a period of time.
Then when you come back, you’ll be prepared to rejoin the fight.

Snark of my first response notwithstanding(whether or not it was warrented may vary), I say this because I care. I am concerned for your well being. You’re valuable here, and outside as well.

I get this odd feeling a lot of these people aren’t going to like her in a year. She may have run on Medicare for all, but she also went down to see one of the camps. She already knows what we’ve got to deal with is much larger than a few pet issues.

Medicare for all will be a key issue for her constituents because of the irreparable damage the GOP is doing to the ACA. It’s the only alternative if your goal is to provide coverage for all Americans, regardless of health.

Crowley may indeed be up by 35% among his constituents but that doesn’t matter if they don’t get out and vote. Primaries in off year elections usually have very low turnout and the unexpected can happen. It is fortunate that Ocasio is a poised woman with a message that resonates with her community. This is a warning that every vote counts and we must get out our base in order to win.

279

I guess what pisses me off is the naked hypocrisy of the whole thing. I wouldn’t have denied her but oyu know what, she was on her father’s staff when he tried to make Kim Davis a free speech hero when she as a public official no less tried to deny people marriage licenses. Her party made the man who denied Biden into a folk hero. Personally, in hindsight, I wish they hadn’t denied her and her group service but then again, they’re always looking for a martyr complex anyhow.

I get the sense these smaller, district polls are much less reliable than the larger, state or nationwide ones.

Some interesting races here in Maryland, I think the Baltimore Sun’s endorsements might have had an impact. The Baltimore County Executive candidate they endorsed in the Dem primary was quite a ways behind according to polls a few weeks ago but rallied to take a small lead; I’m not sure that race is decided yet.

The Sun also endorsed the candidate I voted for in my county council race and she won quite handily against several quality opponents. Of course it helps that she worked super hard making contacts, going door to door, getting her name out through signs and so on.

Primaries are tough to forecast. Much smaller populations so turnout matters. The candidate I worked for lost the primary but we did well in the parts of the district I helped out in. That’s not to dismiss Jennifer Wexton’s win. Just a statement of facts and knowing that, when I talked to her campaign manager on Monday, I offered to help in my part of the district which unfortunately is more conservative.

Is there any awareness in the US that Trump sold out your country to North Korea, in effect giving them the green light to pursue their nuclear ambitions as long as they don’t make too many waves & give good PR to Trump?

The Ghost of a Flea  Jun 27, 2018 • 9:04:50am

re: #373 plansbandc

I find it remarkable that they really believe they have all the guns.

The secret is when they talk about being ready for war they’re really talking about being ready for terrorism against unarmed individuals with a different ideology.

Look at the narratives and fantasies, and what stands out is that they view everyone that isn’t like them as combatants. When they say “fight the government” they don’t mean the actual government, they mean anybody that fits into their framework of unworthiness (which is mostly about their aesthetics…what they find gratifying and what they find distasteful, complete with conditionals that would be hypocrisy if applied to morality, because the context that justifies action is affiliation, not extenuating circumstance).

It works exactly like the concept of “elite.” The word doesn’t mean anything, on purpose.

eta: I’m headachy and forgot to circle back ‘round to the point:

Basically, their fantasy involves soft targets because it’s all about total power. “We have all the guns” isn’t about describing reality any more than any other part.

But it’s also a representation of how they view threat and use of force…basically, they’re telling a story in which any violence they do is self-defense. It’s a cover story.

when are these people going to get it?

no one has a right to anything in politics

you dont have a right to keep your seat because of longevity or experience or any other reason

and sure, every one else can ask or suggest that a person step aside for…the good of the party, young blood, too old or whatever. that’s they lazy way - the i want something for nothing way. i want it (wah wah) my way and dont wanna work for it

if you want to oust the out of touch oldsters, run against them and win
at least join your local party, get on the local boards, be a precinct captain, - become the power

if you dont run or participate, i dont want to hear from you
if you run and lose, more people wanted the other person

I just posted the Schmidt video from Today. What he is saying is in some ways what Brian J was saying.

That is the point I am trying to make.

And what is Schmidt saying: we are going to get another Trump election.

Is that not what Brian J was trying say in his usual crazy way?

Brian made a kneejerk assumption and completely dismissed her (and insulted every woman and millennial here at LGF in the process) solely based on the fact that she is a Bernie supporter. He made no recognition of her candidacy beyond that, and it really sounded like he had no idea who she was…being a Bernie supporter was enough for him to unload on her.

Far as I’m concerned, Brian can take a seat right next to Steve.

I listened to Ocasio-Cortez being interviewed on NPR this morning. Not really seeing what the problem is. Her views are pretty mainstream. The “abolish ICE” angle is thoroughly overblown. She basically wants to go back to pre-PATRIOT Act days when INS ran the show, immigration wasn’t criminalized, the border patrol wasn’t militarized, and immigration officials couldn’t arbitrarily detain kids/families in what are tantamount to domestic black sites. Not really seeing the issue.

But above all, she’s going to be a first year congresswoman with limited influence. If the GOP successfully frames this as a far left takeover, while the GOP is held hostage by the gerrymandered nut balls of the Freedom Caucus, well, fuck it all.

New York’s Republican primary isn’t until sometime in September, so we don’t know who she’s facing yet.

BX and QB twitter were fired up last night. Once she’s facing the opposition I think she’ll get even more first time voters engaged and get the district excited again.

That’s exactly what Brian J. was predicting last night that the media would use her for.

I am more concerned about what Bernie and Nina will use her for…in the media.

One thing Alexandria Ocasio-Corte has going for her, she seems to be in a district that she can win. So that is good.

So maybe she realizes she doesn’t need Bernie and Nina and ignores them.

Want to know why Cortez won? That’s why. The immigration debate moved this race more than any other factor. She was perceived as being better on it even though Crowley was good and has been good for his district.

The GOP isn’t likely to win this seat, not when GOPers nationwide are watching seats where they have 20 point advantages take heat or lose outright to challengers in special elections.

re: #486 Mike Lamb

Turtle thinks ICE is the Border Patrol and the US Military.

I get what you are saying but this woman was doing things Bernie ever did. She went to the border, she actually believes in the things she is saying (one assumes, we shall see once she wins and arrives). Bernie was always all talk. Believing the same things and taking action are different things. At this point, I do not even know what Bernie believes. I know what he says.

I say give her a chance.

I have no issues with her at all. That has never been the point with me.

I think what she did is great. If I was her I’d be breathing into a paper bag this morning with a full-on head-spinning panic attack going on.

She seemed pretty surprised she won. I can certainly understand.

Nope my point is Bernie and Nina fucking things up as they are wont to do.

Seconded. I liked Bernie before he ran for President. Its not what he supports, its not really what he condemns, it was how he decided to attack (Clinton) and run his campaign that left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Also after the fact that I have not seen him acknowledge that the Russians were helping his campaign in order to make HRC the “evil” he was supposedly against.

Precisely. His campaign was what turned me. His supporters are also a little hard to deal with sometimes, but I think it came from him. His “show me how much you love me by being the biggest dick possible” attitude spread like a mutated virus. It was him running for POTUS that made me absolutely hate him. Portugal’s radical drugs policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?

Since it decriminalised all drugs in 2001, Portugal has seen dramatic drops in overdoses, HIV infection and drug-related crime.

Thought this passage was interesting. Rather reminds me of fundy-ruled Texas, except that the ignorance here is continuous and self reinforcing. In actual practice, the “family values” grift leaves one generation after another completely unprepared for the temptations and pressures of the modern world.

Forty years of authoritarian rule under the regime established by António Salazar in 1933 had suppressed education, weakened institutions and lowered the school-leaving age, in a strategy intended to keep the population docile. The country was closed to the outside world; people missed out on the experimentation and mind-expanding culture of the 1960s. When the regime ended abruptly in a military coup in 1974, Portugal was suddenly opened to new markets and influences. Under the old regime, Coca-Cola was banned and owning a cigarette lighter required a licence. When marijuana and then heroin began flooding in, the country was utterly unprepared.

Talk about a tsunami! One person gets 16,000 votes to win a primary and suddenly the world will never be the same.

But, vying for most ridiculous primary take, trust The Intercept to be vying for top position with this headline from a few days ago:

SOUTH CAROLINA CONGRESSIONAL RUNOFF SIGNALS
A PRO-PALESTINE SHIFT AMONG DEMOCRATS (not posting link because it’s all too idiotic)

They’re talking about Mal Hyman, who, by the way, lost the runoff (although he’s contesting the results and his campaign is whining to the state party that they should disqualify the winner—somebody who has been a Dem state legislator for 10 years—because reasons.)

I had to suffer through MANY Mal speeches during the past few months, and never once heard him mention a single world about Palestine. Mal also lost in 2016 by 22 points.

My observation: there’s nothing wrong with progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Corte, even if they’re criticizing Democrats to their right, so long as that criticism is substantive and avoids the potholes of populism and shallow rhetoric.

What bugs me right now…about politics, about the underpinning culture that informs politics, and about internet culture…is the ascendancy of shallowness and performative “takes” for an audience. People tell themselves stories about how the world works, and when those stories become all about self-gratification, there’s no incentive to doubt or even explore a prevailing narrative that’s enjoyable.

Shallowness is fucking us up. Internet hot takery and memes are Roman Republic bread and circuses but faster. We’ve got a dozen versions of the Futurist Manifesto: artists talking about technology and society in artistic, symbolic terms while not engaging with (1) the actuality of technology, because they don’t understand how shit works on a scientific, engineering, or logistical level, (2) inserting meaning into neutral objects and failing to understand that their impressions are impressions, while denying the assessments of others who might fucking know better (see: the Futurist celebration of violence and war as aesthetic, transformative, which does not engage at all with the lived experience of conflict, and specifically has no place for the idea of being the victim rather than the perpetrator)

Shallowness informs every variety of antiskepticism and denialism.
It informs the anti-intellectual instinct such that they attempt to apply rigor or consider context is itself is “elitist.”
It informs the use of symbols and titles while eroded the ideals the symbols are supposed to symbolize.
It informs the press’s continuing push to create click-worthy material and thinkpiece that the maintenance of a performative status quo—everybody’s equally bad, “civility,” et cetera—and the idea that external detail override deeper structural issues.
It informs populism and people who merge their identity with a singular figure
…and thus also informs the horseshoe theory, because a total ideological transformation isn’t that shocking if you’re not engaging on a level deeper than surface impressions and self-gratification
It informs the conspiracist mindset in which complexity of the claim is seen as a proof, while a basic standard of empirical proof…the receipts, if you will…are rejected.
It informs the all-siderism that blocks the structural arguments behind social justice and discussion of prejudice, such that any individual instance of bad behavior nullifies all context of oppression…much like the notion of “assimilation” was a baited trap and a no-win scenario.

We’re in a scary moment where aestheticism has become veracity…again. It’s not a new thing, history is full of powerful people more or less skilled at wielding culture—symbols identifiers, rituals—to create a power block built on seeming. It’s generally a bubble…much like scams are a bubble…but the question becomes how big it can inflate before the facade collapses.

You want a basic standard to assess what to push back against? Consider the depth of an individual. How often do they apply nuance or accept complexity? Do they have blind spots where they fail to do this, and places where they succeed? Do they seem to deliberately use shallowness to their advantage? Do they double down on shallowness?

This is the standard I apply, and it’s not a black-and-white one, either.

I’ve said before (drink!) that we’re not in a political fight, we’re in an epistemological one. This is an offshoot of that issue. There is no ideology or concept that cannot be emptied out or bullshitted into meaninglessness.

re: #548 The Ghost of a Flea

This is also what has landed me on the putative “left” of the US political spectrum. The “right” is not conservative, it has more and more become a coalition of individuals who despise the notion of truth and evalutation of truth, because their standard of “what is right” and what is Right” hinges upon affiliation and externalities (rituals and signs that one is of the in-group) to establish Truth…in ways that makes their subjective take objective, complete with changes made on the fly to suit their instant needs.

This is a problem on the left…the “civility” fetish of the individuals who’ve gotten too comfortable in their personal interactions with reactionaries, but also in the kiddie-pool application of Marxist notions to explain a much more complicated systemic issue…but it is not the informing axiom of the left as it is to the Religious Right (for whom Truth is God, but God as filtered through charismatic individuals that are the Elect), the Objectivists (for whom Truth is handed down by the monied), the conmen (for whom Truth doesn’t matter beyond its utility), the nationalists….

Hell, I was commenting here two years ago wondering why the hell Obama and others were saying *nice* things about Paul Ryan and McConnell at the Dem convention e_e No mention whatsoever of the grotesque obstruction and SCOTUS theft.

Their biggest mistake, obviously, was refusing to adhere to the wisest of sayings that no one went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

At one time there was a bit of common civility in our government. Some of the older Democrats remember that and mistakenly thought they would see that.

Obama himself knew he couldn’t push too hard because…well…pushy Black guy.

They all missed by a whole bunch the reactions of Mitch and Gang. They forgot to figure in Mitch would get cover from the media too.

Democrats do not have the votes to block any nomination.

We can only hope for Trump incompetence in nominating someone for the bench, and picking someone so incompetent that even the GOP will force them to decline the nomination or withdraw.

McConnell has completely fucked the nation for decades to come with his complete mockery of the advise and consent clause. He’s destroyed comity, but yeah, we’re supposed to be civil.

McConnell has done more to destroy the judiciary than any other person in government, including Trump. Trump’s the beneficiary of McConnell’s actions.

But how did we get here? Dems not voting in midterms, or getting on the purity pony ride and self-immolation over Obamacare instead of defending it at every turn. Let’s hope the Democrats use every means to not allow a pick to come up for a vote. Delay, delay, delay as much as possible. If that means McConnell and the Republicans have to kill the filibuster, do it. What goes around comes around.

They already did.

Our only hopes now are Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Bob Corker and Jeff Flake.

In other words… very little hope.

True, likewise it’s going to energize the Republicans though. Get ready for a fight.

This is what can flip a state like California’s governor’s election. Gavin Newsome’s sinking his Dem opponent’s campaign so he could face a Republican doesn’t look so smart now. Of course it didn’t look so smart back when he did it either.

Agh. You may be right. Probably a thank you to Cruz for sticking by him even after he called his dad a murderer.

The only reason it wouldn’t be Lee is that he wouldn’t be allowed to vote for his own nomination. Or would he?

The one thing about the emoluments clause is it’s wishy-washy “by consent of the legislature” wording. It just doesn’t show up on people’s radar because. Him running for a third term definitely would.

But how did we get here? Dems not voting in midterms, or getting on the purity pony ride and self-immolation over Obamacare instead of defending it at every turn. We are going to see a further erosion of civil and voting rights and all rights that people take for granted thanks to the feckless cunts in the GOP.

Sadly, the GOP in this case aren’t “feckless” at all. They’re getting exactly what they always wanted, and were never shy about saying they wanted it.

The eternal conservatopia just became reality. There’s no way to spin this at this point.

Barring a blow out in November and an epic homestand by the Democrats, we’ve just locked in the country to arch-conservatism for at least a lifetime.

They can do 40 years of damage right now and they know it.

We thought Trump winning was a stretch. Did we think we would have internment camps??

Things are going to be wrecked beyond measure. And very quickly indeed.

If I were young, I would fully expect to be put into an internment camp within the next four years for being LGBTQ and very open in my disdain for the piece of shit pretending to be President. But I am old and not useful. So I don’t think they will waste money and time with me. I’ll just be disappeared.

We already know over half of republicans support the idea of canceling elections.

What exactly stops him from simply declaring an election invalid and ordering an investigation into “illegal voting” and just ignoring court orders?

Not the GOP Supreme Court as it’s currently constituted. The new GOP Supreme Court will agree with Trump that’s he’s completely above the reach of the law. You’re living in fantasy land if you can’t see that coming.

The problem with getting worse to get better is that the ‘things get better’ thing isn’t guaranteed. Sometimes, things just get worse. And worse. And worse, with no chance of getting better.

This is what I’m seeing so far. We’re not even close to the bottom yet. And that leaves me hopeless.

At some point, we realize the constitution works because we all agree that it has to work.

So what happens when the POTUS and a significant part of his constituency simply decide to stop paying attention to the constitution and engage in Machiavelli power politics instead?

Saying something is unconstitutional is meaningless if there is no longer any means by which enforcement is possible.
