The Supreme Court Is Now Poised to Fall Into Right Wing Control for Decades

Disaster
Politics • Views: 36,297

The 2016 election will be seen as the biggest disaster for liberal politics in the history of America: Justice Kennedy to retire from Supreme Court.

Here’s what’s very likely to happen next.

With Kennedy gone, the Court’s decisions on issues where he’s a down-the-line conservative — like campaign finance and corruption, most business regulation and voting cases, gun rights, religious liberty, etc. — likely won’t change. There’s already a 5-4 conservative majority on those, so conservative rulings like the ones Kennedy wrote or joined in DC v. Heller, Citizens United, or Hobby Lobby will continue apace.

What will change are rulings on issues where Kennedy has helped maintain a shaky 5-4 center-left consensus. Because of the court’s longstanding principle of stare decisis, or obeying past precedent barring a compelling reason not to do so, some liberal Court achievements are likely to stay. But a Court without Kennedy is substantially more likely to:

  • Overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states (and maybe the federal government too) to ban most or all abortions.
  • Reject challenges to capital punishment and solitary confinement.
  • Rule in favor of religious challenges to anti-discrimination law, and perhaps, in an extreme case, reverse some past Supreme Court rulings on gay rights.
  • Bar government actors from engaging in explicit race-based affirmative action.

The most unfit-for-office president in history now has a chance to hand over control of the Supreme Court to the far right, for decades to come. I feel like I’ve been kicked in the stomach.

Let the Dems do everything they can to block the nomination for at least as long as the GOP stonewalled Garland and watch them howl

The GOP will howl. The difference is that the media will go along with the con and that may be enough to keep Dems from getting even the minimum needed in Congress to stop things up.

Unless Dems absolutely run the table his November, Trump is getting his way with no walls that can be erected to stop him.

If I were naive enough, I’d say there was merit in at least trying to hold him to that standard, if only to try and convince people on the outside of how unreasonable McConnell and the GOP was.

We don’t live in a fair world though. We live in a word where the only fucking real law is IOKIYAR, forever and anon. They get to do anything and everything now, and it’s always our fault when shit goes down. They are the country now, because the rest of us simply don’t fucking matter.

That’s because They Won.

I can’t see any way coming back from this anymore. I really don’t. I want to, I’m fucking desperate for some fucking way off the ledge, but I don’t see it. There’s fucking nothing.

You know, it doesn’t really matter if you lose the game 5-4 or 6-3. Honestly, I can’t think of anything that Kennedy did besides same-sex marriage that I would applaud. He has been a reliable corporate toad and anti-civil rights justice. We know that the Warren court was as conservative as this, and somehow decent rulings came to pass from them over time. We have experienced conservative judges who became more liberal as they aged. We haven’t had a court that would put out a progressive ruling since the 60’s, and still we have progressed in many areas. The current Supreme Court is not our friend, it was not our friend when Scalia and Sandra Day O’Connor was there. The Supreme Court has NEVER been our friend, they blocked FDR’s program. Fuck the fucking Supreme Court, we have always won without (or in spite of) them.

Republicans Can Take Some Time Off. The Supreme Court Just Did Their Job for Them.

Rather than dive right into the latest entry in this week’s Supreme Court Parade of Horribles, let’s state for the historical record that Barack Obama’s decision to nominate Merrick Garland to replace Antonin Scalia will go down through the years as the last in a series of doomed and useless attempts to demonstrate that our politics were in any way normal, and that the American people were too smart and too good to put up with a Republican Party the brains of which were being cored out by the prion disease of which it had been Patient Zero for the previous four decades.

Not that Garland wouldn’t have been a decent justice, or that what was done to him was anything within hailing distance of normal. It’s just that the strategy—find such a nice centrist that the Republicans would look silly in opposing him—was futile, being too clever by half, and being based on Obama’s destructive belief that everyone was as reasonable about the country as he was. It is now clear that he might as well have nominated 50 Cent, Zombie William Brennan, or Flipper. It would have made no difference. On Wednesday, we saw the final payoff.

Again, if you’re a member of a vulnerable population — anything other than So-Fucking-White-You-Glow-in-the-Dark — you need to be looking for ways to relocate to a safe(r) country. Anyone else should also be looking for ways to escape and to bring along family, friends, anyone else who’d be vulnerable.

Always a possibility about RBG, but Thomas is irrelevant. So the 6-3 by September (mark my words!) seems a bit over the top.

Thomas would be a wash.

Wrong.

Any GOP replacement of Thomas with another extremist on the bench tilts the court for another 30-40 years.

You can’t just look at the current court makeup, but the long term trend. Justices are staying on the bench longer, and their impact is felt long after they’re confirmed to the bench.

So, while 5-4 may be the way of decisions, you’ll have a solid 5-4 block for years until RBG retires, and if the GOP is still holding sway, then you’ll get 6-3 decisions rolling back still more rights. Or the court will simply decline to pick up cases at all that it might otherwise choose to do (rule of 4).

There’s a lot more than just what is happening in the moment.

I used to think that - that non-rich white people voting for Trump and the GOP were voting against their own interest. And it’s still true, economically. The thing is, those voters define their “interest” separately from their economic interest. They define their interest as the preservation of white political ascendancy, though they don’t perceive it that way.

Someone said yesterday that Trumpkins will still love him when they lose their homes and eat out of dumpsters. That’s true, as long as nonwhites are denied access to those dumpsters.

Exactly. Remember, Gorsuch is only 50. He’s going to be in that chair for 2 decades minimum, and the consequences of rulings extend far forward. Kennedy was appointed at 51 and just jumped over the 30-year service mark this year. Clarence Thomas has been in his chair for 26 years. Another 20+ years of his kind of ‘jurisprudence’ would be a death knell with the pattern we’re currently seeing.

If they can help get the message to some of the Republican Senate members how dangerous Trump putting a radical right member on the court they might be able to muster up a body or two to stop the nomination.

Yes, it is a hope and a prayer…but I do think some of them know even moderate Republicans are in danger in Trump world.

It might take a deal that they get a Republican justice, but at least one that has their head on straight and understands the Constitution.

And right now on Nicole Wallace’s show Steve Schmidt is calling for the Democrats to do everything they can to hold up a nomination. He is calling on Flake and Corker to stand up and do the right thing.

We’ve got four adult unmarried kids Brady Bunch style, including one who is trans and three who are black/biracial. We want to be able to help them immigrate down the road if they choose. Now we figure we’ll be establishing some kind of Underground Railroad way station.

Meanwhile…Trump on Trade
The Dow surged 285.91 points before closing 165.52 points lower.

reuters.com

At the market open, stocks rose as President Donald Trump said he will use a strengthened national security review panel — the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) — to deal with potential threats from Chinese acquisitions of U.S. technology, instead of imposing China-specific restrictions.

The decision was seen by investors as a somewhat softer approach than plans reported earlier to block firms with at least 25 percent Chinese ownership from buying U.S. tech firms.

But later on Wednesday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said in an interview on Fox Business Network that Trump’s announced plan did not indicate a softened stance on China.

“The market took that as a sign that the hardline approach to China has not waned,” said Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.

Everything’s Up for Grabs Now. What Will Stop Them from Taking It?

Leave it to ol’ Weathervane to supply the punchline to the extended joke on American popular government that was the last week of this year’s Supreme Court term. From CNN:

Kennedy’s decision to step down could transform the Supreme Court for generations. Trump will have his second opportunity to nominate a justice and will likely replace Kennedy with a young, conservative jurist. That would create a bloc of five staunch conservative justices who could move the court further to the right and cement a conservative majority for the foreseeable future. The nomination battle will likely ignite a firestorm on Capitol Hill as it comes just a year after Republicans changed the rules of the Senate in order to push through the nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first nominee.

Let us pause here for a moment and give thanks once again to those brave voices of The Left who would not be cowed by the extortionate pleadings of Hillary Rodham Clinton to remember the importance of the Supreme Court while casting their precious vanity ballots in November of 2016. Well done, dilettantes. In fact, I’m already half-nauseated by the barely concealed glee of the television pundits over what I am sure will be the political Gotterdammerung of a nomination process. The gorge rises like Vesuvius unbound when I hear people talk about what the Republicans want, and what the Democrats will do, and if somebody mentions Robert Bork any time in the next 15 minutes, I am going to eat a staple-gun.

…………………

Obergefell carries a bullseye—the next court is odds-on to find religious liberty exceptions to every law, including gravity and certain parking regulations—and so do Miranda and, what the hell, Brown v. Board.

They probably won’t disallow it nationally, at least not at first. That would cause too much blowback. What they’ll do instead is legally balkanize the US, allow red states to erect ever stronger bans on abortion and gay marriage / adoption in the name of religious freedom and States rights. Then they’ll make it illegal for underage women to cross state lines to have an abortion, then all women will be subject to that restriction. It’ll be a slow but steady cranking down and movement of the Overton Window to the right.

False. It will be called the “Free Republic of America.”

Any reference to democracy, Democrats, anything that nominally sounds socialist, or “power to the people” is going away. The right wing mantra for decades now has been using the word “Freedom” as a cover for blatant xenophobic hate, racist and sexist actions, and a general right wing supremacy. Right wingers have been busy trying to subvert democracy for 50 years now ever since the Civil Rights era… and they are now succeeding.

The gap between the haves and have-nots will grow at a faster rate, forced by higher prices for a lot of consumer goods and services. But it will be worth it for right wingers all so they can stick it to those Black and Mexican people.

absolutely nothing. and for those crying about Harry Reid removing filibusters, Republicans would not let that concern them in the slightest here. The country can work around a conservative supreme court. we’ve done it in the past. If Trump winds up being impeached for treason, one thing that will be demanded is that his supreme court nominations resign.

No. That’s not good enough for these times. She lied to the people of Queens, and she’s only going to lose the party support when she can’t follow through… especially since there’s a Supreme Court eager to kill any of her measures that somehow survive the legislative process.

re: #247 Patricia Kayden

Why wouldn’t they just ban abortions nationally all at once? Why would they care about the pushback? They’re insulated from any public backlash. The good thing is that if Democrats play their cards right, they can take over the White House and Congress in 2020 and make laws protecting a woman’s reproductive rights.

They are not insulated from elections.

At least not yet.

They won by making the far left think both sides were the same, that the Democrats were being ridiculously alarmist about Republican intentions and that nothing mattered. They can’t just flagrantly blow that all up with a national abortion ban and use that same playbook again, and they desperately do want to use it again.

I’ll still keep my WaPo subscription, but articles like that make my eyes roll back in my head.

But, then there’s this one about Kennedy (you know—“Anthony something, you know who I mean”), which is quite interesting:

Over the past decade, the Reagan-appointed justice became the court’s leading champion of gay rights, and he was the critical swing vote who sided with liberal justices on abortion, the death penalty and affirmative action. That had not been the case this term, however.

None of those are actually lies. Yes, there are real problems when people like Sanders either refuse to or simply cannot intellectually articulate the tax changes necessary to pay for them, but these policies are not intrinsically impossible or even impractical. What they do require is an aggressively progressive tax code, abolishing the cap on Social Security contributions and a massive curtailing of US military spending.

You can check my posts on Obama all the way back to the beginning of 2008, and you’ll see I often bemoaned that he was not aggressive enough ideologically.

Yet it is wrong to think that he did not accomplish much. Being President is not about being a superman. Rather, it’s about serving the country (compare to the current example.)

Obama did as much as the country allowed.

We have to remember that the US has always been among the most religious, and morally conservative, “first world” nations.

Here’s one right here. I wrote Bernie off during his first debate with Hillary. Totally pissed at the asshole and his parade of bros.

So how does Alexandria look to me? She looks pretty damn promising. A young, idealistic Latina who has excited her district enough to vote for her by large margin over the “safe” man who took his re-election for granted. Unlike Bernie, she knows the working class isn’t just white - in fact, she embraces all and represents all. She is a DEMOCRAT and has made it clear that it is a big tent and that there is a place for all.

She is also a talented fund raiser and campaigner, willing to do the hard work it takes to represent her district. She is the future of the Democratic party and I applaud her win with enthusiasm. Are her goals unrealistic? Pfft! If you don’t shoot for Mars you’ll never get to the moon. She has already proven herself to be pragmatic (see fund raising and campaigning against an intrenched incumbent). I see a young woman with a very bright future.

Correct… and he never adjusted. All the way until the end, when he refused to denounce Russian conspiracy in the election process because McConnell wouldn’t like it. He let the Republicans walk all over him and never said boo.

When a new baseball position player takes the league by storm, pitchers adjust to his strengths and weaknesses. Good hitters counter-adjust. Bad hitters remain stubborn and fail. Obama was not a good hitter.

That rock now lies at the bottom of the hill. Four times now Democrats have tried to give health care to people who didn’t want it, and only LBJ achieved anything at all- and that while standing on Kennedy’s corpse.

False hope is worse than no hope at all because it will collide with reality and leave the hopers realizing that they’d been fooled. Read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ works for a fuller explanation that I can give.

I like Andrew Cuomo, Mitch Landrieu, John Bel Edwards. Democrats who know to keep the left in their place and actually accomplish things in office. (I happen to share a home state with two of them.) I’m still looking for a 2020 candidate to support, but there’s time.

And I like Hillary Clinton, which means I’m pretty much alone here or in the party, since it’s been the practice of pretty much every Democrat to heap blame for the party’s failings on her. Maybe I’m not really a Democrat after all…

Look, the last Democrat that I probably really liked was Hubert Humphrey.

But that doesn’t mean that national level Democrats since then have not done good.

I reckon the rise of the contemporary reactionary movement that we see, which came out of the 1960’s with Civil Rights Era changes, the Vietnam not-quite-a-war, etc., really is at work here.

Sure, the hate-right has roots all the way back to the Civil War, but I encourage us to think of the current state of affairs as a direct result of the change in the Republican party after 1965.

So this is a long fight.

You get it. Most posters here are defending a liberal vision that is as dead as vaudeville. The Democrats’ job now is to grimly and determinedly defend as much as they can. Dreams are for another day.

This has got to be about the stupidest thing I’ve read from you, and believe me, that’s saying an awful damn lot. You dumb shit, you can’t get elected to any office without dreams. Being “grim and determined” is the quick path to burnout (look at what’s been going on here, all the doom-and-gloom has cost us several valuable members) or getting your ass primaried. Dreams are what give us life, give us motive, give us drive. I’m not saying we don’t need to hold the line, but holding the line is fighting a losing war. We need an objective that isn’t, “be the anti-Trump,” because guess what? That’s what he’s doing to Obama right now, and once that’s gone, there’s nothing left for the GOP to vote for.

Its ok to think this is the end. Its ok to be done with it. Its ok to feel that way and come back at it tomorrow or next week or next month. Its ok to never come back at it. Its ok to double your resolve right now. Whatever we each gotta do is ok. But I remember this, I remember months of wrangling over Gore vs. Bush, I remember the bastards stealing it, I remember the takeover by the religious right by a president who actually believed in it (unlike the current fraud), I remember him appointing Roberts and Alito who are every bit as scummy as Gorsuch, I remember evil Cheney pulling the levers while daft George wandered around misusing the English language. I remember so many states passing bullshit defense of marriage. I remember how the Twin Towers fell and the administration ratings went UP, after they failed at keeping us secure their ratings went up. I remember how they lied us into attacking another country, we knew they were lying and everyone knew they were lying but they did it anywhere. I remember Turd Blossom Rove saying “we create reality”. I remember Katrina. I remember tax cuts that squandered the economy. BUT, after a disastrous war, cratering the economy and failing on Katrina, they were replaced. So the message I take is, prepare yourself for the shitstorm because it is coming, pay down debt, sell your house while the market is high, whatever you can do to insulate yourself from the shitstorm. But I don’t fear the end of the Republic, we’ve seen this movie before. I wish the dumbshits didn’t always have to suffer before they wised up (just to go back to being dumbshits), but this is what we got in this supposedly great country.

a few thoughts i posted last thread:

if you don’t like who won, run against them and win
join your local party, get on the local boards, be a precinct captain, - become the power

if you dont run or participate, i dont want to hear from you
if you run and lose, more people wanted the other person

this is democracy in action
support it, get in it, or shut the hell up

- if you have better ideas, sell them. yes, you have to sell “i think other people should….”
- participate - ***policy and electors are made at the local organization level***
- run - and beat everyone else

democracy runs on votes, not “shoulds”

you can keep wishing the system were different
short of blowing the whole thing up (which is a viable alternative to some people), you have to be inside to effect change. (this is true whether you call it a game or not)

otherwise you’re just yelling at the clouds

I was never a Bernie fan and fought with IRL friends who were (but they did vote for her in the end). I was for Hillary in 2008 and 2016. The GOP may use Ocasio in their ads to claim we are far left but I don’t think it will be an effective strategy. Of course, the WWC will be up in arms that a white man was defeated by a woman of color. OTOH, her victory may inspire other young people to get out and vote. Hopefully the Democrats will be able to terrify their voters into coming to the polls, assuming they haven’t been purged from voting lists by their GOP governors. I like what I’ve seen so far of her and think she represents an essential part of the Democratic base.

This is the real voter suppression strategy.

This is a win for the GOP since their base votes for them no matter what. That is what we need to achieve with the demographics most impacted by racist, nativist, and neglected financially. GOTV, dammit! We have a golden opportunity in 2018 since Trump is such a terrible person and idiot.

I think they will just make abortion illegal nationally. They have all the power right now, so why not? And same sex marriage is toast. I think LGBTQ will have similar rights to those who live in Russia.

Also, businesses will legally have the right to discriminate against anyone they please.

Well, from a legal perspective, this would be difficult because medical procedures, licensing, etc., are managed by the states. (This is why you could get abortions in NY and CA before Roe.) Of course, Congress could attempt to make a power grab, but states like California and New York would resist strenuously. But this would bring it to the Supreme Court, eventually.

I would just remind everyone that even if abortion were to be made illegal in this country, abortions will still happen. What will change is that women will get dangerous and unsanitary abortions which put their own lives at risk. Which pro-lifers simply do not care about, because those women were sluts and deserve to die. No sarcasm here, remember Kevin Williamson wanted to hang all women who had had an abortion.

It really is bullshit. I donated to her campaign and was a Hillary supporter from day one. Had Bernie won, I would have voted for him, not particularly happily, but I would have voted for him.

I love Hillary. I wish she was President. I think the shit would have hit the fan in a few of the same ways because of the rabid right, but I am absolutely confident we would not have seen children in cages or internment camps. Or Roe v. Wade being reversed, etc. etc. I think the hate right would have attacked her with more vigor than they attacked Obama because there’s truly nothing they hate more than women. Charles’ zero-tolerance with regards to his moderation has helped me think twice before making any comments that can be seen as derogatory and not up to the standards of LGF. If anything it has helped me improve my quality of posts instead of resorting to juvenile means to express them. I can do that elsewhere but on here, I have to respect the standards Charles has levied as a privilege to post here.

And take it from me, I’ve been very close to being banned in the past (4-5 years ago) and I’m pretty grateful to Charles for allowing me to redeem myself on here. My heart was in the right place back then, but the way I expressed them was negative and counterproductive.

What can you actually do about it? I’d say (in addition to GOTV activities, etc) it’s definitely time to look into serious civil disobedience and other forms of protest that will hit the scumbag enablers of this regime where it hurts (e.g. boycotts, sabotage, etc). A Lysistrata-style denial of things they value most.

Is a general strike possible in America? I don’t know. But something close to that in scope clearly needs to be considered. I’ll also repost this thread on WWII-era resistance, which describes subtle, non-violent, yet highly effective forms of sabotage:

As satisfying as it would be to slow down the confirmation till after the election, I think that would be a mistake. Speaking strictly tactically here, it would be better for Democrats to allow Trump’s nominee to replace Kennedy to be confirmed quickly. Here’s why:

1) McConnell is completely shameless. There is no rule or precedent in the Senate that will stop him bringing a nominee to a vote. There’s pretty much nothing we can do to stop it now.

2) Once the new Justice is confirmed, Republicans won’t be able to use the nomination to get their voters to go to the polls.

3) Maybe this time, the lazy fuckers who sat out 2010 and 2014 and gave us Majority Leader McConnell, and thus Justice Gorsuch, will get off their asses and VOTE!!!!

Don’t know…as soon as I heard that I raced to shut it down. It’s a little more difficult with streaming Directv Now.

I have not been watching him. I watch Ari and then quickly change. I do the same after watching some of Nicole (because of her slant and guests because of her being Republican) before Chucky comes on..I go back later to catch Rachel and Lawrence.

As soon as I take my new FireTV out of the box and set it up, I’ll learn (hopefully) some new streaming skills. Of course, I said that about my InstantPot, which is still sitting on my counter waiting for its first use. I guess I like buying and looking at gadgets more than actually using them. Brian just may be in total despair and those in despair often say and do things that don’t reflect who they really are. I miss PLL who would never have been banned from this site if Hillary had won. Believe me — if Charles could read my mind, there are certainly things I have thought on occasion, when I feel really helpless, that would get me banned here.

We don’t know how any of this will ultimately turn out. For those who saw Charlie Wilson’s War, recall the tale of the Zen master — it is not always clear when you are living in the middle of a story, what the “final” (if any) ending will be.

Anything happen today?

Actually Brian’s ranting reminds me off Dark Falcon’s reaction to Obama’s election back in ‘08. Not pretty.

Probably true, but a hard sell to scared Dems.
Could suppress D turnout if they dont at least see a fight
But yes, in the end red state Dems will (in most cases) have to vote for Trump’s pick and there are not enough (any) Rs to pick off.

It was very easy. It just comes down to having an Amazon account and a streaming service. Type in passwords with the little FireTV controller (that hardest part of the process) and it was on and working.

DirecTV Now has some issues, but it has gotten better since I’ve had it about 4 months now. When it works 100% it is very good. Sometime you get 80% and frustrated. But that isn’t happening as frequently.

Strange thing…NBC related properties seem to be their biggest problem network to stream. For some time people all over the country were throwing a fit about not getting MSNBC.

Public Service Comment: If you type in the name of a service provider into Google followed by the word ‘down’ you will get a link to downdetector. com and you can see how many others are suffering and what they are saying. It even maps the area of the country/world affected.

Shared anger as it were. I learned that with ATT Yahoo Email Down. It was a sure way to know it wasn’t my connection. One thing about digital and the ‘net. If you are having a problem others will be too.

Yeah, this. Kennedy has never been a liberal justice. He voted the right way a few times but he has sure proven his conservative creds in the past 24 hours. His retirement 3 months prior to an election that WILL go blue and turn the Senate is plenty of proof that he’s not on our side. What a ratfuck! He intended this, putting in his resignation just before the mid-terms.

Fuck all this defeatist crap! I swear, y’all. There is fucking work to be done. Are we gonna just lie down and let them roll over us so easily?

I have a Firestick (bought it before they even came out—sounded like something I HAD to HAVE)—never used it till a few weeks ago when my BlueRay, which I use to stream, borked. But the BlueRay is working again. But now I have to hook up the FireTV—such fucking first-world problems!

Anyway, to spare you watching Tweetie screaming, here’s a synopsis.

“What is the best argument Democrats would have for picking off [Republicans],” Kornachi asked about the GOP’s 51-seat majority.

Matthews said that the only argument or best tactic was survival of the Democratic Party, something the GOP members probably aren’t likely to be interested in…

“But what is the tool? What is the instrument?” Kornacki tried to ask again. “I understand what you are saying about the base being fired up. “

“It’s Chuck Schumer’s job!” Matthews screamed, seeing irritated.

Kornacki kept trying to ask the question every way he could, and no matter what, Matthews went off and ranted about his own talking points, regardless of the question.

re: #228 Brian J.

If Ocasio had any integrity, she’d resign her nomination. Her platform was fantasy last night; now it’s deranged fantasy she couldn’t pass if she spent twenty terms in Congress.

Geez I might as well give up my reëlection campaign here in Redstatia before I even start then, particularly since I also like many of the things she does.

Heck just today I saw a pickup truck with “liberal hunting license” stickers (about nine) in my village.

Political platforms are ideals, what you would like to achieve or work toward. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez ran a brilliant campaign on 1/11th of her opponent’s budget. She went out and engaged the voters. I imagine she isn’t going to have much interest in uber-conservative issues, and is very likely to win NY-14. So if she should give up her just-won primary, why not all the Democrats resign, despite the blue wave of special elections that have flipped places such as a Wisc. state senate seat, a Penna. US House seat, and an Ala. US Senate seat, along with two governorships and a whole slew of local elections?

We’re going to need her education in foreign affairs after the Dumpster fire in the White House.

What color is the sky on your world? This site has the fewest BernieBros of any place I read.

Most people, whether they liked her or not, supported Hillary even before the nomination. I supported her most of the election cycle because every time Bernie opened his mouth he rubbed me the wrong way.

I never really “liked” Hillary, but when it really came down to it, the only thing I could put my finger on was hating her speaking voice, and her apparent lack of knowledge about the fact that when you have a microphone and a PA, you don’t need to fucking scream.

That wasn’t enough of a reason to throw away a vote and contribute to the rise of Il’Douche Fuckface von Clownstick.

So you might be alone in “liking” Hillary, but you weren’t alone in being OK with her and supporting her.

re: #333 Brian J.

I supported Sanders in the state caucus here, which he won. As the primary season wore on and it became more apparent that Sanders was about Sanders, my support went to Clinton.

I never disliked Clinton. I don’t know who’s heaping blame on Clinton (other than rodent copulators on social media and the view-from-nowhere beltway media). A perfect storm of crap hit her campaign (the ever-present purity ponies - see Nader, plenty of foreign interference, a whole bunch of people who didn’t vote at all, Anthony Wiener’s cell phone which gave James Comey another chance to throw sand in the gears - Huma Abadein should have strung up Wiener by his wiener over that, the structure of the Constitution which gives the power of elections to the Electoral College rather than the biggest vote winner).

It’s always been a philosophical question about color, for sure—does everybody see the same thing or not?

BACK IN ‘93, ‘94… I used to walk by this car dealership with a bunch of those Geo Storms with the metallic pink paint jobs with that greenish undertone. Admittedly they were piling up on the lot, but I’d see them on the road as well.

That was all the proof I needed…anybody who bought one of those simply could not be seeing the same thing I did when looking at them. Impossible.

I’m sure something similar is true of design. I share the writer’s pain….

I really want to go to the rally in Minneapolis on Saturday. At the same time, I’m worried a bit about getting rounded up by the ‘authorities’ like what happened when the republican convention was in St. Paul in 2008.

I just started working with a lawyer to get a conviction from 14 years ago expunged by the courts. It’s the one and only time I’ve ever been in legal trouble, but it’s something that I’m afraid could mess things up when I’m trying to find retirement housing (I retire in one year and two weeks. I’ve donated a shitload of money (for me) to RAICES and other aid groups this week. That may be the best thing I can do until after August.

The GOP had perhaps one generic ballot since last year that showed them even or even in positive territory versus the DNC in November, polls are showing that voters in battlefield states want candidates who will be a check on Trump, and the GOP are experiencing the sort of mass exodus of incumbents that the DNC suffered just before the 2010 Wave.

But sure, the GOP’s primed to wash in to major victories. Just ignore all the other evidence and go back to sleep, kiddies, you’ve already won.//////

Wholly crap, I just read through that whole thread live-blogging his speech (if you can call it that).

Watching old clips of Donald Trump from the Seventies and Eighties, he was at least coherent. That live blog of FOX clips is like that clip of a dog being dumped a hundred tennis balls at once and losing his mind over which one to chase.

The San Francisco woman who called police on an 8-year-old girl who was selling bottled water has resigned from her position at a cannabis company amid an onslaught of criticism, the company said.

Alison Ettel, who has been dubbed “Permit Patty,” left her position as CEO of TreatWell Health after several San Francisco dispensaries refused to sell it their products, a spokesperson said Tuesday.

“This decision, while not an easy one, is in the best interest of their patients,” spokesperson Cynthia Gonzalez said in a statement.

Serious question: What competition? Aside from Indian, most of the companies that mass produce motorcycles for sale in the US are subsidiaries of foreign-owned companies. “I’m gonna turn in my Hog for that Honda! That’ll show’em!”

A nice hog is about $25,000. That is a lot of money for two wheels. The Harley demographic is getting older, and there are a lot of used Harley’s for sale, with low miles. I really don’t see a lot of millennials hopping on a Harley.

Well that… uh… explains a lot? The last 24 hours have been a complete SCOTUS ratfuck with Kennedy in his favorite place, the one, ONE SCOTUS judge. The guy who makes the decision for all and for precedent. The most powerful man in the world, arguably.

Then he resigns 3 months before the election that he knows will change the Senate. The ultimate… statement. And even he now proves to be corrupt.

A lot of them are turning to scooters because they’re cheaper and easier to use in town. If they’re going to take a road trip, they’ll take a car.

I was thinking about getting a motorcycle during one of my mid-life crises, but I decided on a scooter instead. It was one of the most fun decisions I’ve ever made. It was a 300cc so it had enough power to get me out of trouble without getting me into trouble.

There’s a Harley on the bulletin board at work that’s selling for more than my scooter cost new and it only has 5000 miles on it. Why would someone spend all that money on a motorcycle and then only ride it 5000 miles? I put over 7000 miles on my scooter in the first season I owned it.
