He’s a genius. A national treasure. He throws gems together like this in the studio, then goes on the road and not only pulls it off, it sounds better.
Rare talent. Rare man.
An Oasis.

It’s going to be a very, very long, hot summer. And it’s not even past the 4th of July.

Let’s recognize what’s done is done and start moving forward again to fix the evils in this country. It’s even a longer row to hoe than it was yesterday or the days before. But it can be done.

The major issue coming up is the results of Mueller’s investigations(s). When he releases the future indictments could be critical to the elections this fall. If Mueller has to wait beyond Labor Day the whole investigation will be tainted as an effort to influence the election. So, the sooner the better. Unfortunately, every day exposes new avenues for Mueller to follow. At some point he’s going to have to say this is it and head into Court.

Mueller’s investigation will charge many of the trump cabal and maybe some members of Congress. By “Following the Money”, Mueller may find a lot of politicians may have benefitted from Russian “donations”. Many of these donations were probably hidden from the individual politicians but they are still responsible. Whether the public accepts these explanations is another question.

Don’t forget or overlook the power of the people. Look what happened after the 1st travel ban. Overnight the people were in the street protesting. And decent Judges stopped it.

There still are decent, honest Judges working for all Americans at both the State and Federal level. They will do what they can within the limits of current laws. Don’t despise all Judges.

I do predict there will be several nation-wide public out in the streets demonstrations this summer. There are just so many important issues to protest.

See ‘ya in the streets

People have been criticizing this administration for not helping Puerto Rico more. Here we can see why this administration could not have done any better. Total lack of planning. No logistical support. No supply chains. Just put the Fearless Leader’s edicts into effect immediately with no preparation for what that might mean in practical terms.

On a side note, I’m glad there’s a new thread, because the last one was so long that Opera was not letting me scroll down the comments.

I admit, I am the closest I have ever been to despairing. Just now, the totality of the damage this freak and his enablers have done - are doing - will continue to do has sunk in. And it sucks. But you know what? I’m still not giving in. I refuse to walk the dark road. I still have hope that we can eventually fix this, that we’ll come out of this with new checks and balances to prevent Donald J. Trump from ever happening to this country again. No doom-and-gloom from the fishbowl, no ma’am. Just a giant middle finger extended in the general direction of Washington, D.C.

I spent an hour and a half escaping from reality by reading Ana Mardoll’s live-tweets of “Prairie Fires,” a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder (yes, of the Little House books) and Rose Wilder Lane by Caroline Fraser. Mardoll gathered her tweets and posted them on her blog here:

anamardoll.com (there are several posts)

Anyway, Wilder and Lane, they were both pieces of work, horrible pieces of work who were big on pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and anti-tax and anti-government. But they didn’t tell the truth about their history and they misled people into believing you could be a small farmer on the prairie and make it, when in point of fact, you can’t. Mardoll’s tweets also explained who Roger McBride was (the guy who inherited Lane’s estate)—he was one of Lane’s “young men.” (And yeah, it’s as skeevy as you can imagine.) But it’s important because Lane is one of the founding mothers of American Libertarianism with Ayn Rand and Isabel Peterson, but, like so many Libertarians, they were such egotists they couldn’t work together.

“Prairie Fires” won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 2018. I’m trying to decide if I want to read it, because Wilder and Lane come off as thoroughly awful people and I’m not sure I’ve got it in me for a hate read, not after today.

Here’s a link if you’re interested: amazon.com

And yeah, in its own special way, it does relate to what’s happening in the present day, because a lot of our MYTHS about stalwart white people settling the prairie came from Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane. And it’s pretty much lies, myths and fantasies.

It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

re: #91 mmmirele

“Prairie Fires” won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 2018. I’m trying to decide if I want to read it, because Wilder and Lane come off as thoroughly awful people and I’m not sure I’ve got it in me for a hate read, not after today.

NOT going to read it.
Not going anywhere near it.
I’m going to separate the art from the artist and ignore people tearing down one more pleasant memory of my childhood. Like Doctor Seuss. I never took the Little House books for accurate, detailed biography — Wilder said they weren’t. They were stories, like many of the other now-politically-incorrect fiction that reflected the times the author lived in but I can still enjoy anyway. Yes, I know that is old white lady privilege. Tonight I don’t care.

On top of all the other horrific news, I am waiting for one of my oldest friends to let me know if she needs to borrow an air mattress and baby monitor to make it through her mother’s final days on hospice and still manage a couple hours of sleep. Sleep isn’t selfish, it just feels like it is.

Going to go give my mother her bath and thank the Lord she’s still alive and kicking and coherent enough to complain about the process. At least for now, so treasure the time I have. Then I’m going to go re-read an old book and shut out the news for a respite.

Do you have a problem with Gillibrand because of the Franken thing? Get the fuck over it. Squeamish about candidates who were endorsed by or worked with Sanders? Tough fucking shit.

We’ve got racist, Nazi-coddling, misogynistic, plutocratic, xenophobic, authoritarian baby cagers to defeat. If it has a D next to its name and it appears on my ballot, I’m voting for it, whether it’s a neo-liberal platypus or rose-munching banana slug.

It’s time to put all that other shit to the side and pull together because everything — and I mean everything — depends on it. If you see me doing otherwise, please knock me upside the head with a clue-by-four.

re: #91 mmmirele

My impression from other books — haven’t gotten to that one yet — is that RWL was the real piece of work, much more than her mother. (If LIW became nasty in her adulthood, it’s not really reflected in the books.) And reading the books as an adult, I saw just how hard and hand-to-mouth that life really was. After all, the family didn’t find stability until their last move, when Charles was a carpenter in addition to the farm.

I’d suggest you read Pioneer Girl, if you haven’t. Hate reading not required.

Seriously. I still haven’t been paid for the Women’s March.

*sigh* I’m still waiting for my Eli Lilly checks for picketing Scientology back in the late 1990s and early ’00s. (Seriously, Scientology said we were paid picketers, which was a huge laugh.) I heard the same thing from attendees at Mark Driscoll’s church grift in Scottsdale in 2016. I laughed in the man’s face and pointed that I paid my own money for the signs, the vehicle I drove, even the GoPro camera I had strapped to my wrist.

Charles Ingalls was an incompetent shit. That much was obvious to me in the first book. But then I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin that my great grandfather carved out of virgin pine land shortly after the ACW. He managed to make things last a 150 years so why couldn’t better land alongside the Mississippi work? Feh.

The fact that Minneapolis, and Maple Grove, and pretty much all the other settlements along the riverside blossomed into immensely prosperous Midwest towns, should answer that question for you.

The one thing that stuck with me about those books is she witnessed one of the last great Rocky Mountain Locust hordes. What we did to the land in this country killed them off and that’s good, but are they really gone for good, or are they just waiting for the right conditions? en.wikipedia.org

I forgot that. Interesting thing to remember…

re: #91 mmmirele

Roger Mac Bride—Blast from the Past! He was the 1976 Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate. IIRC David Bergland was his running mate. Bergland later became a leader of Dominionists in Southern California and he went on the Jesus Circuit calling for the abolition of the First Amendment.

BTW—Mac Bride was the Virginia Elector who in 1972 cast his electoral vote for Libertarians John Hospers and Tonie Nathan. Nathan became the first woman in American History to receive an electoral vote.

Feh.

I think a lot of that land along that stretch of the Mississippi is pure sand. A farmer friend of mine wasn’t impressed when we took a drive around Lake Pepin.

It is possible to find it without a license, but honest dealers will ask for the permit (including mail order sellers).

There is no equivalent exchange in which pain and a body count will feed the exact kind of revolutionary outcome you want.

This is true of “peaceful” disruptions, revolutionary wars, and state collapses. Often who wins is not who is smartest, or even who is most organized, but who is cruelest, fastest to do the unthinkable. And that can include shitty human beings squatting like brood parasites inside your own camp.

re: #246 William Lewis

I have to go high as well. My daughters need a good role model. Their dad thinks I’m “indoctrinating” them, but they come to me with things they have heard, some correct, some not so correct. They hate Trump, but my youngest was spouting about Trump without anything to back it up. I won’t stand for that. They have to have reasons why they feel the way they do. I’m guiding them toward sources and facts so they aren’t just being mouthpieces.

Thanks. I’ve brought them with me to vote every election and have tried to instill how important that right is to women. I’m older than most mothers so I probably won’t be around as long as others. My goal is for them to understand history, the importance of rights for all citizens, and to be informed and vote every single election. It hits closer to home for them, all the stuff that has been happening, because they are the minority in their schools. They have friends for whom all of this is up close and personal. My girls are horrified.

Okay look folks, I don’t usually get preachy and I know it’s been a challenging day around here but can I ask everyone to tone down the negativity a bit?

There’s are so many off the rails forums and comment sections on the web. LGF is the ONE oasis of sanity in a desert of bad craziness but it hasn’t really felt that way to me today.

Well have our things. VB bakes, makeitstop plays music, Charles codes, Teleskiguy smokes weed…and skis. Wheat dogg teaches, Anymouse is in local politics, etc.

I don’t have to fully support what you do in order to respect and honor your right to do it. I don’t want to get into fights with people on here. I get into enough spats on Twitter and FB and elsewhere. LGF is a place I like to think I don’t have to argue much.

So how about we spend less time lamenting the darkness around us and instead do what we can to keep whatever lights are left shining brightly?

There’s this one …

Spring Creek is a 12.7-mile-long (20.4 km) tributary of the Cache La Poudre River in the state of Colorado in the United States.

Spring Creek begins north of Horsetooth Mountain within Horsetooth Mountain Park just west of Fort Collins, Colorado and flows into Horsetooth Reservoir. After leaving Horsetooth Reservoir out of Spring Canyon Dam, Spring Creek flows through central Fort Collins just south of Colorado State University. For most of its passage through the city, it is paralled by the city-maintained Spring Creek Trail. (more)

For other places named Spring Creek:

en.wikipedia.org

At least according to Wikipedia, that font of all human ken [citation needed] there are no others in Colorado.

Alex Jones probably got his schtick from the Gay Bomb from the Nineties (your tax dollars at work):

The “halitosis bomb” and “gay bomb” are informal names for two theoretical, non-existent, non-lethal psychochemical weapons that a United States Air Force research laboratory speculated about producing; the theories involve discharging female sex pheromones over enemy forces in order to make them sexually attracted to each other.

In 1994 the Wright Laboratory in Ohio, a predecessor to today’s United States Air Force Research Laboratory, produced a three-page proposal on a variety of possible nonlethal chemical weapons, which was later obtained by the Sunshine Project through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The British intelligence and security committee is holding a press conference now to explain the findings of their report published this morning.

Short version is that Trump’s election will mean less cooperation with US intelligence agencies.

The same conclusion has already been reached by France, and I suspect Germany is already there or will be soon.

Many here think the Trump-Putin summit (or “debriefing” as it was sarcastically referred to by one French wit) is going to spell the de facto end of NATO as we knew it; some are talking about a transition to an EU-managed NATO without the US.

Our analysts predict more chaos to come in the US (and that;s the best case scenario).

You are no longer an ally; not yet an enemy; but things are inching that way. China is arguably hurt by this too; the only undisputed winner is Putin.

Elon Musk is really, really weird. This came in my email from Tlthe Guardian…Unicorn Farts:

We’ve had another glimpse at Elon Musk’s ugly side after his Tesla company ripped off a farting unicorn. Colorado potter Tom Edwards started making his unicorn mugs in 2010 and was initially thrilled to find out Musk was a fan, until realising the image was being used without his permission in Tesla promotional material.

“He can sue for money if he wants, but that’s kinda lame,” Musk told Edwards’s daughter in an exchange on Twitter. Edwards has lawyers on the case: “He [Musk] is really really interesting. But he isn’t above copyright law.”

dangerman  Jun 28, 2018 • 5:08:00am

Some of this new and pervasive despair is because we didn’t think, didn’t plan, weren’t supposed to have to be doing this now.

We as a country, as a world, were past it.
Smarter
Enlightened
We’d moved on

Well as a nation we aren’t.
The work is not done and it’s worse than we thought.
We’re surely not as far along as we thought we were.

We don’t want to be doing this
And this new road is harder than the last one was.
Harder than the one we were supposed to be on by now.
And its gotten several magnitudes worse in the last 2 years
Some because they masterfully play to the refs.
Some because they are the refs.
And some just plain dumb luck or timing.

It won’t be sustained.
We will come through.
Because the truth will out and “The arc of the moral universe is long, AND it bends toward justice”.

To get there we now have to slog through this filth.
For however long it takes.
To ensure that the arc does bend.

I can still feel despair, disappointment, and not give up. Not for anything.

The primary goal in an emergency is to ‘emerge’
It’s time to accept that things are they way they are.
Accept what has happened, what we’re into and in for.

Regain control. Regroup. React.

“I could not fathom staying at an organization that was OK with lying to the American public. I hate that. In 17 years in the military, at the Department of Defense as a civilian, at NASA, and now at Homeland Security, I have never been asked to lie. I have never been asked to perpetuate a lie, which is the same as lying,” Schwab said.

When CBS News spoke to Schwab on Wednesday at his home, some three months after he quit, they were interrupted by a surprise visit from men who identified themselves as agents from the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General’s Office.

“They just said that they wanted to talk to me about the leak with the Oakland mayor,” Schwab said of his conversation with the agents. He was “completely shocked” to see them.

“Did you ever contact the Oakland mayor’s office?” Yuccas asked.

“No. I’ve never met her before. I never contacted Libby Schaaf,” Schwab said. “Never. I would never tell her. I would never tell anyone…They were very serious. He was very stern with me, and it was concerning.”

Schwab said it was “absolutely” an intimidation technique.

“Why, three months later, are we doing this?” Schwab said. “This is intimidation. And this is why people won’t come out and speak against the government.”

Asked if he believes other agencies are struggling with the same thing, Schwab said, “I know that they are, because they’ve reached out to me.”

Schwab said he’s speaking out now because he’s talked to others in the federal government with similar concerns.

“That’s one of the most important reasons that I’m doing this is that - so that people hear that someone else stood up, that someone else said, ‘No.’ And was concerned with it…To actually prepare and stand out in front of the public and perpetuate something that you know is absolutely false is not okay. And no special agent from the Department of Homeland Security is gonna stop me from saying that,” Schwab said.

There is a very good article on the French website dedefensa.org which deals with geopolitical stuff in general (lots of analysts reading it) and is unfortunately too long for me to translate here (besides, copyright) but which could loosely be rendered as “Trump: success through chaos, success through failure.”

The predictions they made esp. the handling of North Korea, have been totally correct, and they predict more chaos and more objective failures (globally speaking) for the US, which Trump turns into personal successes for him.

Today I’ve taken steps to move our six-figure asset portfolio out of the US — I mean, only physically & legally, I don’t mean untying it from Wall Street — simple because i no longer trust the US Government and US companies that may be obliged to follow its directives.

There are articles like this floating around today:

Donald Trump confirms summit with Vladimir Putin sparking fears they’ll strike a ‘peace deal’

I’m not sure that even classifies as “new” news, for anyone who’s been paying attention the past two years.

Trump is clearly a wanna-be dictator, and his lust to be a strongman fits right into the Russian agenda for splitting the old West alliances.

Oh, the “peace” deal was established long ago between these two.

MsJ  Jun 28, 2018 • 6:10:20am

All of that being said, I also have to say I can no longer appear on the Fox network.

I quit.

Quite simply, the position Fox has taken on our government’s policy of separating children from their parents is too heinous for me to accept.

Ann Coulter claimed that videos of crying children feature “child actors.”

Sean Hannity suggested that these children are part of a “rolling invasion” of our country.

And more than one announcer has suggested that these kids are actually better off in cages than they were with their parents. One heartless commentator dared say locking innocent children away was like “sending the kids to camp.”

Accepting that this misguided policy is wrong doesn’t depend on which side of the political aisle you’re on. It doesn’t matter if you support immigration and immigrants or if you don’t. And it doesn’t matter if you believe the law — or the Bible — gives our government the right to do what they’re doing or not.

Separating innocent children from their parents and jailing them is just plain wrong.
It’s not as if we don’t know better. We’ve seen this kind of abominable behavior before
….
Fox invites me to be on the air almost every single week. The other stations do not.
But all that was before you decided that separating innocent children from their parents was an acceptable practice. And it was before you supported people who will say anything — true or not — to defend this horribly un-American behavior.

Clearly, there’s nothing I can do to change the way you run your business.

And let’s be honest, none of the shows I’ve been on will even see a blip in viewership because I no longer appear on the programs. Truth is, no one will even know I’m not on Fox anymore.

But you will know. And I will know too.

I quit.”

re: #15 The Vicious Babushka

Trump’s trade war has been an absolute disaster. He tries to claim that steel industry has benefited, and there’s no evidence to suggest that.

Everyone’s going to be paying more, if they aren’t already.

Heck, if you like Jack Daniels, you’ll be paying more because the company’s product has gotten slapped with tariffs essentially killing sales overseas so they’ll have to make it up with higher prices here.

We’re all paying for Trump’s idiocy. His supporters and fans continue cheering it all because they want to watch it all burn down.

That’s why this is the Resistance. Even though I’m here in NYC and happen to be white, I’m also a minority (Jewish) and feel empathy towards others - a trait that the GOP spectacularly lacks. They want to impose their views, especially their religious views on everyone else.

This vocal minority of people who back Trump are intent on imposing their views on the majority of the nation that believes in separation of church and state, and which sees access to birth control, health care, and the option to get abortion as a right that should be protected. The GOP sees this as something to reverse because it again provides control over women that they want back.

Things to rally around in defiance and defense of women and minorities? ERA. I think now more than ever this is critical. We’re seeing the GOP eroding rights across the board, and with Kennedy’s retirement, the GOP will shift the balance even further to the right in an attempt to roll back rights even further.

They’re gunning to prevent any kind of social program on the scale/scope of Medicare/Medicaid/Obamacare/SNAP, etc. from ever getting implemented again, despite fact that the Constitution explicitly indicates that Congress is required to provide for the general welfare of the nation - Art 1, Sec 8. That’s why we fight. That’s why we struggle.

We want to leave the nation better than we found it, and unfortunately there are too many people who think people who want to leave the nation better off are equated by the media or voters (who decide not to vote at all, protest vote, or cast ballot with the bigot) with those who seek to sabotage it or roll back decades of social progress.

The French article I mentioned makes the point (I’m simplifying here) that what is bad for the US (either through chaos or failure) is good for Trump; that is not an idiot but merely all too willing to sacrifice his/your country to his on selfish interests. If
By Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!

ProPublica has a list of 97 shelters that are holding children here in the USA. Four of those shelters are within two miles of my house.

I was shocked, because the closest “shelter” to me was, I thought, a youth drug rehab. I dropped a note to ProPublica letting them know that. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that the operators have switched over to housing (incarcerating) immigrant children; there’s probably more money in that than in running a drug rehab for teens.

The reason trump wants to move these child prisons to military bases is that, first, it looks bad to protest the military and second, you can more easily get arrested doing so.

You may be justified in arguing that the Bear is in fact responding to earlier NATO expansion, but that’s in the past now, and today, we have to deal with a more aggressive Bear, so while NATO might be faulted, right now, it is more necessary than before. However how effective it is in its current form reminds me of the Magino Line, ie the French always ready to fight the previous war. NATO is a WWII/Cold War tool at best, and obviously ill-suited to the current climate.

And when the investigation into Clinton ends, the GOP will claim that they’ve got new evidence (total BS) to launch yet another investigation that turns out to be a nothingburger.

GOP got Hillary on the stand for 11 hours and they weren’t able to poke holes in anything she said. They couldn’t find anything to charge her with.

11 hours.

They had nothing. They’ll beat that dead horse because it’s an article of faith that she did something illegal and therefore it’s only a matter of time before some investigation proves it. We just need more investigations.

Meanwhile, in less time and cost, Mueller’s already found widespread criminality in Trumpworld, but we’re supposed to believe it’s a witch hunt.

In some specific areas (eg tax cuts) you are correct, but generally he is leading them, dragging them even. It’s more a rel8uctant absence of opposition than support.

The Republican party and the aligned apparatus has spent the last 50 years creating this monster believing they could control it and use it to accomplish their objectives. The monster isn’t Trump, it’s the Republican base. Trump’s just the monster’s largest anus. Originally, the monster was under the control of it’s handlers, but over the decades it’s proceeded to eat many if not most of them and replace them with various appendages, orifices and other parts of it’s anatomy. The end result is that the monster is out of control and any remaining handlers who make too much of a fuss are just going to get eaten. So they just shout out things like “hey, wouldn’t tax cuts be grand” and “libtards would cry if we did this” and the monster usually goes along with it because it likes tax cuts and hates liberals.

Trump=Republican base. Republicans follow Trump so the base doesn’t eat them.

Even more amazing the reason why: they want to cover up DJT’s collusion and illegality.

Which is why Mueller will amount to nothing: he could find that Trump literally assisted in mass murder in order to gain the election and maintain influence, and the GOP controlled congress will shrug and decide it’s all worth it for infinite power and to trigger the libs.

Why should they do anything after all. They won everything. They have all the power and the opportunity to ensure they never lose that power ever, even with minor blips in congressional make-up. They own the fucking country from the top down for the next two generations at least.

Trump guarantees them a solid 30%. Then they just have to get another 20-odd percent of voters to go along with them to secure an electoral majority.

Voter suppression helps, but as we have seen, ideological purity, apathy and indifference are the best vote suppressors.

That tweet is not doing a lot of the work in her piece. Bad headline summary by the Atlantic. But yes, I do think they care because a lot of their intel agencies helped ours figure out what’s up and because they’re at risk. Their best former ally has a leader undermining everything all the time and each tweet is a reminder of the insecurity and chaos that is to come.

The article from TPM linked above actually makes a more compelling argument that Trump shouldn’t be allowed to have any SCOTUS nominee confirmed given the pending investigations and court cases against him, and the reasonable likelihood that his nominee would play a prominent role in deciding significant legal issues concerning the Russia investigation, the lawsuit re: Emoluments Clause violations, and procedural issues surrounding each. Massive conflict of interest.

your bold is likely true. the italics i think are not necessarily

from electoral-vote.com this AM:

For the moment, the GOP—though it represents less than 30% of the country’s registered voters—has a hammerlock on all three branches of the federal government. When it comes to the legislative and executive branches, that hammerlock is, at most, a short- or medium-term situation. The red team will eventually ebb out of power and the blue team will eventually flow into power, as is always the case with the two branches subject to the will of the voting public. In particular, the current bull market is probably approaching its end, and when it eventually tanks, it will take the economy with it. When the economy is in the toilet, the president gets blamed, even though presidents don’t have that much effect on the economy (at least, if they avoid starting trade wars).

The hope is that Trump has an own goal, and nominates his version of Harriet Miers (Pirro, c’mon down!) such that even the GOP can’t get behind the nomination. This in turn delays things until the mid-terms, where we would hopefully take back Congress, and could ratchet up the pressure to such a degree that a confirmation couldn’t happen during a lame duck Congress.

I’m starting to see media talk about taking the Senate now framed far away from highly unlikely. And it doesn’t feel like grounded analysis around a fired up Democratic base and newly energized electorate. Trump, Walker and GOP were happy to give a foreign company $4 billion in tax breaks to put factories in Wisconsin. Turns out that Foxconn had no interest in anything other than the money, and will be more than happy to pay lip service while getting the money.

If Foxconn doesn’t build out everything they claimed they’d do, taxpayers would never see a dime and will instead be on the hook for decades to come.

If this sounds familiar, it should - it’s the same con job that Trump and the GOP repeatedly play on tax breaks and government programs.

Of course, this was all entirely predictable when the state front loaded the benefits and put together a proposal far in excess of any benefit to the state, and then the GOPers pushed it through.

I should have been more clear in stating that Putin’s aggression is not necessarily a reaction to NATO expansion but that NATO expanding up to the borders of Russia was nonetheless a bad move.

And yes, NATO was created as a counter to the Warsaw Pact, which has been defunct for decades.

It wasn’t a bad move for the Baltic states and Poland, who really, really wanted to join NATO, were allowed to join, and haven’t been invaded by Russia. Unlike other countries. And as for it being like the Warsaw Pact, a collection of client states of the USSR; no, that’s what Trump thinks it is.

NATO expanded to the borders of Russia in 1949. Look at a map, and look up north.

Where he fucks up quite often is in just ignoring his advisors as in the “do not congratulate” moment, or shitting all over our allies. The reason he’s not paying that much of a political price for this isn’t because he’s smart but because he’s being cynically enabled and supported by Republicans soulless monsters with no genuine principles or integrity. He’s winning because a solid third of American society is pure trash.

re: #582 lawhawk

Of course it was “entirely predictable”, and was predicted. I read a ton of analysis on the Foxconn deal since the outlines of it were first announced, and the economic “downside” - i.e. that the Chinese would get oodle-tons of the State of Wisconsin’s cash (a vast amount upfront, too IIRC) in return for vague (and largely unenforceable) promises to build enormous facilities and hire thousands upon thousands of deserving locals - was obvious from the get-go.

But of course, negative analysis got basically ignored or dismissed in favor of Scott Walker’s incessant blaring about “30,000 jobs”, so there we are…

KJU got everything he wanted from Trump and now he’s making it crystal clear to everyone at home that there is no change in policy.

A senior North Korean military officer who told colleagues they no longer needed to “suffer and tighten our belts to make rockets and nuclear weapons” has been executed by firing squad, according to reports in dissident media.

The officer was named by the Seoul-based Daily NK news website as Hyon Ju-song, a 56-year-old lieutenant general who was serving as director of the services inspection division of the People’s Armed Forces.

Lt. Gen. Hyon appears to have become excited at the possibility that the detente that has taken place on the Korean Peninsula this year will develop into full-blown peace and got ahead of official party policy.

Jordan is the perfect incarnation of the GOP in 2018 — unhinged, bullying, unbound by facts and unconcerned with the norms of democratic government…It is a vivid display of a party that refuses to fulfill its constitutional functions and aids and abets the president’s attacks on the rule of law.

Which Dem said/wrote it?

Actually, it was Jennifer Rubin. And her column is still touted as from a “center-right perspective.” When is she going to give up the ghost? Or will she fall back in line once Romney’s in the Senate and the yam is out of the White House?)

I really don’t get people who are attracted to people who everybody knows cheated on their spouses. Sure, if your spouse cheats, you might stay with them for any number of reasons, like emotional ‘sunk costs’. But getting involved with someone you know is a cheater is making an emotional investment in someone you already know is dishonest.

Hard for a regime like that not to see his statement as betraying a deep dissatisfaction and fomenting insurrection. re: #564 dangerman

your bold is likely true. the italics i think are not necessarily

from electoral-vote.com this AM:

Except the problem isn’t just who gets in, but how much the electorate will tolerate what they do. We’ve seen infinite fucking patience with the GOP when they destroy fucking everything. A Dem votes to give them health care, they’re kicked on their ass for being the worst Anti-American super-socialist fucking ever.

We’ve seen how much slack the American people will give Dems before they freak out and throw the pendulum even further to the right for the last 3 decades or so. Outside of a few small pockets, it been conservative fucking dominance because that is what the fucking American people seem to fucking want.

This is about as permanent feeling as it possibly could be. Gains that took decades erased in two years. Gains that have stood for 50 slated to be wiped away for at least another 50. And the people seem more fucking concerned that a Dem used a bad word and was mean. Even if Dems by some miracle get Congress back in the intervening years, what allowance we’ll get to fix things will be so preciously minimal, that we may not get even halfway to undoing the damage before America decides to slam the pendulum to the right again and pin it there for the next decade and a half.

Because the GOP has a modicum of self-awareness regarding their own tribalism and innate need to abuse power that they just assume a Democratic nominee would only investigate for partisan reasons. Pure projection: we abuse power, so everyone must abuse power.

But it seems as if they’re trying to say that they themselves, the elected partisans, should somehow be excused their own partisanship, just so they question the partisanship of the investigators. I wish some of the witnesses would make this point.

And the projection constantly works because they’ve conditioned the press to chase after every single accusation they send toward the Dems in bad faith, however unfounded, while inoculating themselves from consequences when they do the very thing they accused Dems of, because hey, ‘both sides same thing, and besides, Dems did it first!!!’ And the press buys it. Constantly and forever.
