John Roberts will soon be the single most powerful man in America. He will have four Justices to his right and 4 to his left, enabling him to be in the majority on every decision he wants, which will give him the power to decide who will write every decision. He will decide what the Constitution means, and he could have this power for decades to come, unless the Democrats take it from him the next time they gain power by adding seats to the Court to make up for the theft of Garland’s seat.

Justice Kennedy was in that position for much of his SCOTUS tenure. IMO it is becoming very clear that too much is left up to SCOTUS in the US system of government. A single non-elected official with a lifetime appointment simply shouldn’t have that kind of power.

Or, far more likely to me, he simply thinks he is. This has a lot of hall marks of a delusional right winger getting his “orders” from Trump twitter bowl evacuations. Had this been any kind of official operation, someone walking in with a shotgun is not the way it would have went down.

re: #44 Big Beautiful Door

I dunno. I don’t think a crazy person would have the presence of mind to obliterate his own fingerprints. That was done for a reason.

I don’t completely buy Teukka’s theory about an assassin or intel personnel, either. I think it’s either some SovCit or a member of a Nazi group.

As if this day didn’t suck enough…

Verge: Harlan Ellison, one of science fiction’s most controversial authors, has died

The science fiction genre has lost one of its greatest — and most controversial — authors. Harlan Ellison, who wrote and edited groundbreaking sci-fi anthologies, short stories, and television episodes, died at the age of 84, according to his wife, via an associate.

Ellison was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934, and published his first short stories in 1949, before moving to New York City to focus on writing science fiction. Throughout the 1950s, he wrote hundreds of short stories, and served in the US Army for two years. In the 1960s, he relocated to California, where he began to write scripts for television shows such as The Outer Limits, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Star Trek. He later served as a consultant for shows such as The Twilight Zone and Babylon 5. Ellison also worked briefly for Walt Disney Studios, only to get fired after a day when co-founder Roy Disney overheard him joking about making a porn film with the company’s characters.

Also, Trump looked really unhappy.

There is no point in analyzing the Trump voter psyche, any more than there is a point to doing a detailed analysis of all the infectious agents present in a foot abscess someone got from stepping on a foot-long cesspool splinter.

In the case of the abscess it need to be lanced and disinfected, and in US politics Republicans need to be outnumbered at the polls.

Honestly, though, the ease and rapidity with which the rank and vile of the GOP elected officials go from American Exceptionalism to Blame America First has been breathtaking.

Possibly because he’s just stupid enough not to know with whom he is dealing.
I just finished Bill Browder’s Red Notice (highly recommend.) He’s the founder of Hermitage Capital which did business in Russia and then got embroiled in exposing corruption there. Sergei Magnitsky was one of their lawyers.
I knew there was a lot of corruption. I knew Putin was untrustworthy. But I found the degree of callous disregard for individuals and their rights to be shocking.

Anyone who so much as gives Putin the time of day is a fool and possibly a traitor.

I heard commentary yesterday about how important the Judiciary, especially SCOTUS is in GOP thinking, and how the Dems have paid far too little attention to it, to our detriment. This is one reason I think the Dems need to make a show of resistance to the nomination, but not derail it long enough to have it still open by election time.

But our more casual voters are likely to become discouraged or angry if the Dems don’t manage, against all odds, to stop the confirmation. Sometimes I really get the shits of my own party.

GOP Sens. Richard Burr (N.C.), Bob Corker (Tenn.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Jeff Flake (Ariz.), Dean Heller (Nev.), James Inhofe (Okla.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), James Lankford (Okla.), Mike Lee (Utah), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) voted against the bill.

The $428-billion farm bill authorizes agriculture assistance and nutrition programs for the next five years. The current farm bill expires on Sept. 30.

‘God is racist,’ Jewish people ‘all descend from Satan,’ NC candidate says

A website tied to a candidate for the North Carolina General Assembly says God is a racist white supremacist and that Jews are descended from Satan.

Russell Walker is a Republican candidate running for state House District 48 which includes Scotland and Hoke counties.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Republican Party withdrew its support for Walker.

“Based on recent behavior and previous statements, the North Carolina Republican Party is unable and unwilling to support the Republican nominated candidate for North Carolina House District 48,” GOP chairman Robin Hayes said in a statement Tuesday. “The NCGOP along with our local parties in Hoke, Scotland and Robeson Counties will be spending our time and resources supporting Republican candidates that better reflect the values of our party.”

Why? it’s not as if lifting fingerprints was some half-understood primitive art back then; tracking the bloody thing out of a 100K+ possibilities in some horrible index card system was the problem. Being able to feed a print into the computer and get it matched without putting in that horrible amount of effort is what modern technology has added; anything that smooths the epidermis for a few days to a point where 1918 dust, brush and tape would not have lifted a print would likely still work today, it seems to me.

Also there are circumstances where wearing gloves could be suspicious, so there might be some rational reason to do so anyway. OTOH, this guy probably is a few fries short of a happy meal anyway.

Specific meaning: it’s from a horror/fantasy series where people can sacrifice the people they love to get a wish granted (but with an especially aggro version of Monkey Paw rules applying) by demonic things with god-like powers.

That brand is the mark of someone going to be sacrificed. The manga’s hero is someone branded but who survives (basically, impossible) and fights back.

So…massive fucking martyr/hero complex going on there.

Also I’m offended because I actually like the comic he’s citing.

Privatize The Profit, Socialize The Costs.

When I was in the AF, the cooks in the alert shack were all AF personnel. A guy could be a cook for twenty years and retire with a pension (well, he would manage other cooks and the kitchen, supplies, sundries, &c later in his career). Now everything is outsourced to private companies.

True story. When the Space Shuttle broke up over Texas and littered the Piney Woods with debris, a Private Company (I think it was Fluor Daniels) was awarded a contract to get people to walk through the National Forest and tag debris. They were paid $75/person/day, plus perdiem. A friend of mine who spoke no Spanish but had a technical background (a field chemist who ran an on-site real time data lab truck at environmental sites) was in a real slow cycle for work and was offered a crew chief position at $35/ hour. What the hell, he thought, $1,400/ wk.

His entire crew was Spanish speaking and almost certainly undocumented, with no OSHA training. They were paid $10/hour. They lived in tents, at night, in February, and literally walked abreast for miles every day looking for pieces parts. For weeks.

I asked him if he learned any Spanish. “Sure”, he said “Culebra means snake and culebra peligroso means dangerous snake. We saw a lot of those. Also little pieces of Shuttle. Tagged them, bagged them, photos and GPS coordinates for each piece. A couple of big chunks we had to call in trucks or ATVs. Those Mexicans were just tireless and worked like dogs on that job. And the Contractor cleared $20,000 a day on my crew of forty. And they had something like 200 crews. That’s $4,000,000 a day for weeks.”

What DT is doing, every single day, is making sure that his name and photo are “above the fold.” He is a black hole, absorbing attention, no matter what the news, and that is just the way he likes it. There is no end to how much he can absorb.

And the media, and we-the-people, have no choice but to swim in that relentless tide. How on earth do we stop this?

(I went out and pulled weeds and worked up good sweat, and it felt good in my soul to be away from it for just a while.)

(I’m running a nine miler tomorrow AM for the same reason)

Not especially. I prefer “When the Morning Comes,” myself.

Seriously, the Republicans just spent seven years screaming to the world that they were going to abolish Obamacare, only to be unable to put together an alternative when they finally had the chance because they were too busy telling each other how much they hated it. The point is to learn from others’ mistakes and copy tactics that succeed, not the other way around.

First time I used the internet I was 12 or so, using an ISP called Prodigy. I could only use it a half hour at a time because it was dial-up and it was a long distance call to Grand Junction, CO, over a hundred miles to the west. That howling sound that came out of telephone receivers in the house is still one of my favorite sounds. In those days, when I heard that sound, I knew I was plugged in and can look at stuff and talk to other people far away from me… on the internet.

I’m still “green” around here when it comes to computers. Some of you folk talk about cards with holes in them and magnetic tape.

So there is this fuckery from “The ‘Gospel Coalition.’” The author is Karen Swallow Prior, who is a professor at Liberty University. Basically, she gives a right-wing Christian argument for so-called “hospitality,” which means that the Red Hen should have served Sarah Sanders.

And as I said, we get fuckery, where she describes how, years ago, she confronted a doctor who performed abortions in a store:

I knew what my role was when I was at the clinic protesting at the site where his hands did their dirty work. But I had no idea what I was supposed to do when I faced him in the clean, well-lighted convenience store, where citizens of all walks of life come together, bonded by our common need to buy gas, milk, bread, coffee, and water.

Suddenly, with no forethought or plan, with his back still toward me, I spoke gently toward his ear, “When are you going to stop killing babies?”

My tone was as if I’d asked if he thought we might get some rain soon. My volume such that the cashier made no indication he’d heard me speak.

But the abortion doctor heard.

He wheeled around so fast that my heart began beating impossibly faster than it had been before. His voice exploded into a torrent of angry words, aimed like bullets at my impassive face. I stood still and didn’t say another word. When the alarmed cashier—who had no idea what caused this outburst—tried to calm the man, the doctor turned on him, telling him he would never come into this store again. Finally, after what seemed like hours but was probably only a minute, he stormed out of the store.

And then there’s a whole people should have served Sarah Sanders and Maxine Waters should not use those words, because it’s not hospitable. Then we come to the end and her supreme hypocrisy:

If I could go back to that scene in the convenience store today, would I do the same thing? Yes, I think so. I was unexpectedly given the opportunity to offer piercing words, spoken in love, in hopes of pricking a man’s conscience.

She’d do it again. She’d tell the doctor (not ask) again: “When are you going to stop killing babies?” This is fucking bullshit. (Here’s the whole piece of trash: thegospelcoalition.org )

She got a number of laudatory tweets, but I gave her a piece of my mind in several tweets.

Tired of this bullshit. And yes, pro-lifers have had 45 years to convince people of the rightness of their cause, but instead it’s become exquisitely clear how much they want to control the bodies of women. For that, they can surely fuck off.
