I got QLed, so I’m reupping.
So there is this fuckery from “The ‘Gospel Coalition.’” The author is Karen Swallow Prior, who is a professor at Liberty University. Basically, she gives a right-wing Christian argument for so-called “hospitality,” which means that the Red Hen should have served Sarah Sanders.
And as I said, we get fuckery, where she describes how, years ago, she confronted a doctor who performed abortions in a store:
I knew what my role was when I was at the clinic protesting at the site where his hands did their dirty work. But I had no idea what I was supposed to do when I faced him in the clean, well-lighted convenience store, where citizens of all walks of life come together, bonded by our common need to buy gas, milk, bread, coffee, and water.
Suddenly, with no forethought or plan, with his back still toward me, I spoke gently toward his ear, “When are you going to stop killing babies?”
My tone was as if I’d asked if he thought we might get some rain soon. My volume such that the cashier made no indication he’d heard me speak.
But the abortion doctor heard.
He wheeled around so fast that my heart began beating impossibly faster than it had been before. His voice exploded into a torrent of angry words, aimed like bullets at my impassive face. I stood still and didn’t say another word. When the alarmed cashier—who had no idea what caused this outburst—tried to calm the man, the doctor turned on him, telling him he would never come into this store again. Finally, after what seemed like hours but was probably only a minute, he stormed out of the store.
And then there’s a whole people should have served Sarah Sanders and Maxine Waters should not use those words, because it’s not hospitable. Then we come to the end and her supreme hypocrisy:
If I could go back to that scene in the convenience store today, would I do the same thing? Yes, I think so. I was unexpectedly given the opportunity to offer piercing words, spoken in love, in hopes of pricking a man’s conscience.
She’d do it again. She’d tell the doctor (not ask) again: “When are you going to stop killing babies?” This is fucking bullshit. (Here’s the whole piece of trash: thegospelcoalition.org )

It is true that a picture can be worth a thousand words - an editorial cartoon, maybe even more than a thousand.
The editorial cartoon which was published Monday on the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and Amarillo Globe-News Opinion pages is a prime example of the truth behind the aforementioned saying.
Considering some of the public response to the cartoon, which was done by Rob Rogers of Andrews McMeel Syndicate - the same publishing source as syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, it is worth explaining the rationale behind the A-J/AGN’s selection of the cartoon.
• Here is the basic premise - editorial cartoons reflect the viewpoint/belief/opinion of the author or creator, not of the A-J/AGN. This same logic applies to letters to the editor, syndicated columns, guest columns, etc. Editorial cartoons are no different. Editorials produced by individual newspapers, such as those of the A-J which include the byline of “Lubbock Avalanche-Journal,” are the opinions of the A-J editorial board. It is important to understand this distinction.
• The aforementioned cartoon attempted to depict the former situation on the U.S. southern border regarding the federal government’s “zero tolerance policy” and police brutality. (The caption states, “Meanwhile, far from the border … children are being separated from their families,” along with a law enforcement officer pointing a gun at an African-American youth.) Is this an extreme comparison? Yes. Do we agree with this comparison? No, because the former “zero tolerance” policy was a government policy, while actions that constitute police brutality are not condoned by government. The cartoon represents an invalid comparison, but many editorial cartoons make invalid comparisons, exaggerate the truth and portray presidents as gross caricatures of who they really are. This is what editorial cartoons do.
• It needs to be said that the comparison depicted by the cartoon (a “zero tolerance” immigration policy to police brutality) can be interpreted differently. For example, African-Americans may see the cartoon’s comparison in a completely different light - and this needs to be understood.
• The cartoon is not an attempt to disparage all law enforcement, much less first-responders. Law enforcement officers are human beings. We hold the belief that the vast majority of law enforcement officers strive to enforce the law and to protect the public. This is a belief we strongly hold - and for good reason. And this editorial cartoon in no way changes that. When law enforcement deserves criticism, we will provide criticism. When law enforcement deserves credit for the sometimes-thankless job it does, we will be the first to offer praise. This editorial cartoon in no way changes this policy.
• The goal of a vibrant and relevant Opinion page is to provide a diverse view on topics and issues. Any Opinion page that offers the same political views over and over - whether these views reflect the right or the left - is a stale, boring and irrelevant Opinion page. Right below the aforementioned editorial cartoon in both the A-J and AGN print pages was a column by Coulter. Speaking of immigration, which was part of the topic of the cartoon, Coulter made several valid points about the dangers of unchecked illegal immigration - and for the most part we agree with Coulter’s column. Coulter’s column provides an interesting contrast to the invalid comparison depicted in the editorial cartoon. (And again, it should be noted, speaking of diversity, that both the cartoon and Coulter’s column are from the same publishing source.)
To make a long editorial short, Monday’s editorial cartoon made an extreme comparison with which we do not agree. But what is more important than agreement is to provide an outlet which presents differing viewpoints and opinions. This freedom of thought and opinion is invaluable and priceless in a true republic.
Funny. The one that went the longest without giving us his opinions is the one that’s deep in third—or even fourth—place. Wrap your little MAGAt brain around that because not a single one of them is *pro*-Red, unless you extend that colour back to international socialism.

We proceeded from the assumption that more police officers = better police protection without giving enough thought of the quality of training involved in putting more officers out there.
And as we saw with Ferguson, MO, there is an inherent conflict of interest with a District Attorney who needs to cooperate with police to obtain indictments being compelled to initiate proceedings against a police officer for suspected criminal activity.
And the ubiquity of personal video cameras has altered the dynamic significantly…

A Texas woman filed for $1 million in damages from a Chinese buffet after she allegedly suffered a terrifying bout of “fried rice syndrome.”
Germaine Mobley, 62, said went to Asian King Buffet in Waxahachie for a lunch in 2016 that left her gravely ill in an intensive care unit, the Dallas News reported.
Mobley claimed in the lawsuit that she was sickened by Bacillus cereus, also known as “fried rice syndrome,” a type of bacteria often found in foods kept at room temperature.
Mobley said she ordered fried rice at the restaurant and began to feel sick during the drive home.
“Everything tasted fine,” Mobley told news station WFMY.
Mobley, who had pre-existing health conditions, went to the hospital the following day when her health continued to deteriorate, according to the news station.
“I just started vomiting,” she told WFMY. “The next morning, I was having problems breathing, so my husband called an ambulance.”
She stayed in the ICU for eight days, where she was put on a ventilator, according to the Dallas News.
“‘Fried rice syndrome’ sounds like a joke, but it’s very serious,” Mobley’s attorney Kathryn Knotts told the Dallas News.

I got over it fortunately, like most of my childhood allergies, but it still seems I feel really bloated after eating at some places, which I suspect is due to their using more MSG than most.

His people came from Westport, Ireland through Springfield, Illinois (mother was a Sullivan) and he came to Denver in the late teens. His wife, my Da’s mum, was from Ballyvourney, County Cork. Their argument basically is, “Never mind our crime, if there was one, because the investigators, even if they’re Republicans, are compromised, not perfect, etc, so no facts you uncover matter.”

Got a little larger than expected paycheck today so I threw $15 at the preferred Democratic candidate for my congressional district. They’re using ActBlue so I’ve just signed up for enormous amounts of SPAM, but the candidate is actually - I feel - pretty damn good.

Voters see the difference. And it’s time that the Democrats’ leadership “man” up and rise up and take a position against Trump in the most active and aggressive manner in Congress. They’re the minority party, but the GOP was able to fight through being the minority to complete control over Congress, the redistricting system, and are actively subverting the electoral system. They’re also packing the courts with right wing extremists.
Do what you have to and don’t spare the language. Civility went out the window long ago. Comity was destroyed in the Senate thanks to McConnell. Schumer needs to understand that there’s no going back based on what McConnell did. The Supreme Court is going to be lost for a generation at least, and that can and will lead to an undoing of so much social progress - or worse - prevent additional social progress (like expanded health coverage or enviromental justice, etc.)
Retaking the House in November is an absolute necessity. Trying to gain back the Senate is critical but unlikely given the class year - more Democrats’ seats at stake. But that doesn’t mean we can’t fight for every goddamned seat across the country.
It’s because our very lives are at stake. Our votes matter. Our voices matter. And it’s time that the Democrats speak as one against this vile admin instead of 2 steps forward, 1 step back, then another, then another, a half step forward, repeat.

As Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team probes deeper into potential collusion between Trump officials and representatives of the Russian government, investigators are taking a closer look at political contributions made by U.S. citizens with close ties to Russia.
Buried in the campaign finance reports available to the public are some troubling connections between a group of wealthy donors with ties to Russia and their political contributions to President Donald Trump and a number of top Republican leaders. And thanks to changes in campaign finance laws, the political contributions are legal. We have allowed our campaign finance laws to become a strategic threat to our country.
An example is Len Blavatnik, a dual U.S.-U.K. citizen and one of the largest donors to GOP political action committees in the 2015-16 election cycle. Blavatnik’s family emigrated to the U.S. in the late ’70s from the U.S.S.R. and he returned to Russia when the Soviet Union began to collapse in the late ’80s.Data from the Federal Election Commission show that Blavatnik’s campaign contributions dating back to 2009-10 were fairly balanced across party lines and relatively modest for a billionaire. During that season he contributed $53,400. His contributions increased to $135,552 in 2011-12 and to $273,600 in 2013-14, still bipartisan.
In 2015-16, everything changed. Blavatnik’s political contributions soared and made a hard right turn as he pumped $6.35 million into GOP political action committees, with millions of dollars going to top Republican leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham.
In 2017, donations continued, with $41,000 going to both Republican and Democrat candidates, along with $1 million to McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund.

The whole anti-abortion/infanticide principal came about as the early Christians were trying to integrate themselves into the vastly more conservative Roman culture than the original messages of Christ or even Paul (there is no Jew or Greek, no free or slave, etc) were. There was already a distaste for the casual disregard of infants in Rome or worse in the earlier Phoenician/Carthaginian religion where actual child sacrifice was practiced. In this the Christians tried to stake out a moral high ground while still being within the Roman culture (Timothy, Titus and the other psuedo-Pauline Epistles show this conservative Roman appeasement). At least with the anti-infanticide and the expectation that the child should be raised appropriately, the early Christians were far more moral and consistent than the, so-called, Pro-life swine of the modern era.

Yeah, the culture of AM talk radio has always flown a little under the radar, but I think it’s been pretty influential in shaping, or confirming, a certain range of attitudes and prejudices, and of course it must be said, it’s always been extremely, um, not civil. So this “loss” of civility some on the right are starting to complain about has very deep roots in its own soil, as they very well know.

Bleah. In 1983 I put headphones on and heard “The Pretenders” on the first CD player in a store in Ansbach Germany. I was instantly converted. As soon as I could afford CD, I sold all my vinyl and do not miss the noise or wearing out LPs (I burned out 3 copies of “Who’s Next” in high school… )

I’ve certainly noticed that the new pressings - even of classics like “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Number of the Beast” are mostly on 180 gram virgin vinyl. I have both of those on LP and it’s really great sound.
Now, I just have to get a kick-ass 1980’s monster stereo system and I’ll be set, LOL. Get me some speakers that can vibrate the plaster right off the walls. :D

There’s been a similar process in the UK for the past decade. (And, from what I’ve seen in Dublin today, is a similar story in the Republic of Ireland. Oh, did I mention I’m currently in Dublin on Pride Weekend?) It’s like of weird how it happened: first it was second hand record players and records. Then, when Ryan they become more like goldust, then new players and records were produced at premium prices. You’re lucky to get a cheap and nasty USB connected player for under £100. Meanwhile, the going rate for single albums (generally pressed in heavy 180gsm) is £18, which is more than they would have cost on CD when prices were at their height in the early 90s in the UK.
Note that is not just some audiophile “Ultimate Deluxe Edition” reserved for classic albums. Most major releases also receive this treatment. The flagship FFOP record store in Glasgow’s Union Street used to be majority CD and DVD, with one shelf for vinyl, usually DJ/dance releases. Now, vinyl- newly pressed, takes just over half of the floorspace from the front of stores onwards.

In the zeal to create a postcard sized document, they’ve basically made it even more complex because they shifted a bunch of lines to separate worksheets that have to be completed. There’s also the double sided nature of the filing, which means that paper returns will need additional scanning (or have double-sided scanners in place for the 2019 tax season). Right now, tax returns are all single sided.
This doesn’t simplify anything. Taxpayers who currently itemize may still need to run the numbers as if they are itemizing to see if they benefit from the standard deduction or not. Some taxpayers will find out that they’re getting hit with higher costs because of the tax plan’s fallout in high tax states.
Oh, and every single state that bases their tax on the federal returns (line 28, line 32, etc.) will have to update their tax returns to address the changes.
If the IRS and Congress wanted true simplification, they would have ordered the IRS to send out a pre-filled return to everyone showing the information that the IRS already gets from everyone - the W2, 1099, etc., as they do now to verify your prepared return. We should then be able to amend/modify with the additional deductions/credits, which the IRS doesn’t have.
That would simplify things to the point of making it all signing the returns and accepting the tax statement (pay underpaying tax/credit for overpayment). It would essentially kill off tax prep companies, but they’re the ones who profit from all these changes if you’re not using turbotax or similar product to do your own taxes.
