I got QLed, so I’m reupping.

So there is this fuckery from “The ‘Gospel Coalition.’” The author is Karen Swallow Prior, who is a professor at Liberty University. Basically, she gives a right-wing Christian argument for so-called “hospitality,” which means that the Red Hen should have served Sarah Sanders.

And as I said, we get fuckery, where she describes how, years ago, she confronted a doctor who performed abortions in a store:

I knew what my role was when I was at the clinic protesting at the site where his hands did their dirty work. But I had no idea what I was supposed to do when I faced him in the clean, well-lighted convenience store, where citizens of all walks of life come together, bonded by our common need to buy gas, milk, bread, coffee, and water.

Suddenly, with no forethought or plan, with his back still toward me, I spoke gently toward his ear, “When are you going to stop killing babies?”

My tone was as if I’d asked if he thought we might get some rain soon. My volume such that the cashier made no indication he’d heard me speak.

But the abortion doctor heard.

He wheeled around so fast that my heart began beating impossibly faster than it had been before. His voice exploded into a torrent of angry words, aimed like bullets at my impassive face. I stood still and didn’t say another word. When the alarmed cashier—who had no idea what caused this outburst—tried to calm the man, the doctor turned on him, telling him he would never come into this store again. Finally, after what seemed like hours but was probably only a minute, he stormed out of the store.

And then there’s a whole people should have served Sarah Sanders and Maxine Waters should not use those words, because it’s not hospitable. Then we come to the end and her supreme hypocrisy:

If I could go back to that scene in the convenience store today, would I do the same thing? Yes, I think so. I was unexpectedly given the opportunity to offer piercing words, spoken in love, in hopes of pricking a man’s conscience.

She’d do it again. She’d tell the doctor (not ask) again: “When are you going to stop killing babies?” This is fucking bullshit. (Here’s the whole piece of trash: thegospelcoalition.org )

She got a number of laudatory tweets, but I gave her a piece of my mind in several tweets.

Tired of this bullshit. And yes, pro-lifers have had 45 years to convince people of the rightness of their cause, but instead it’s become exquisitely clear how much they want to control the bodies of women. For that, they can surely fuck off.

That’s actually a ring that his mother gave to him. She died when my dad was 26.

I wish I knew my grandma Helen. She was a somewhat famous model and socialite in Denver during WWII, her husband (my grandfather, who I knew, went to his funeral in 1999) was over in Europe bombing cities for the USAF. Helen was very beautiful in those days. She died of lung cancer in the 70s.

My dad’s father was a Division fire chief in Denver during the war. His people came from Westport, Ireland through Springfield, Illinois (mother was a Sullivan) and he came to Denver in the late teens. His wife, my Da’s mum, was from Ballyvourney, County Cork. Her mom married a hard rock miner and she ran two hotels in Blackhawk and Central City during the boom. Sent my grandmother back to Cork for a “proper education”.

Shocked! Shocked, I say!

Ate at Uchi tonight, our regular Thursday date night. Damn people, the food there is just killer bee. Get there at 4:30, get seated at the sushi bar early and order pretty much everything off the Social Sake menu. So frickin’ good, as usual. We got a huge Hamachi Collar ($20) and a Dessert ($9) off the main menu and were still out the door paying $100 bucks with tax and a stupidly large tip because a couple things got comped, including two lobster nigiri with a lemon beurre blanc w/ Ossetra caviar. If you come to Austin, pin it.

He filled the ecological niche of retro-50’s cool in the TV environment that he inhabited at the time the show was shown. Environments and ecological niches change with time. Of course he’s an anachronism today. So are the rest of the 70’s. Once upon a time there were “Leisure Suits”.

The approach is to give the GOP Congress an excuse to ignore the findings of Mueller’s report without seeming complicit in the affair.

They will be looking for any perceived conflicts of interests, evidence of partisanship or procedural errors and using them as an excuse to dismiss everything and refuse to act upon it.

Failing that, they will make up shit.

Good morning, Lizards!
Start your day with a delicious and soul-nourishing portion of wingnut butthurt, all the more satisfying because it comes from an unexpected source.

The Lubbock Avalanche Journal and its sister paper, the Amarillo Globe-News put the outrage tsunami in motion with this cartoon, published in Monday’s editions:

From the response you would think they had suggested locking Baptist Sunday school children in cages, or some other ghastly atrocity.

The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) and the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT) both issued lengthy harangues denouncing the paper.

State Representative Dustin Burrows (Pipsqueak-Lubbock) also had his say:

“This cartoon is not funny and is irresponsible. It perpetuates a false narrative that could not be further from the truth.”

Finally, FORMER Democratic county chair and city council rep Todd Klein continued his quixotic and increasingly desperate quest for relevance by commenting:

The AJ has so far refused to knuckle under and ran this editorial defending itself:
Editorial: Controversial editorial cartoon deserves an explanation - and here it is

re: #80 Chrysicat

Got it:

Editorial: Controversial editorial cartoon deserves an explanation - and here it is

It is true that a picture can be worth a thousand words - an editorial cartoon, maybe even more than a thousand.

The editorial cartoon which was published Monday on the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and Amarillo Globe-News Opinion pages is a prime example of the truth behind the aforementioned saying.

Considering some of the public response to the cartoon, which was done by Rob Rogers of Andrews McMeel Syndicate - the same publishing source as syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, it is worth explaining the rationale behind the A-J/AGN’s selection of the cartoon.

• Here is the basic premise - editorial cartoons reflect the viewpoint/belief/opinion of the author or creator, not of the A-J/AGN. This same logic applies to letters to the editor, syndicated columns, guest columns, etc. Editorial cartoons are no different. Editorials produced by individual newspapers, such as those of the A-J which include the byline of “Lubbock Avalanche-Journal,” are the opinions of the A-J editorial board. It is important to understand this distinction.

• The aforementioned cartoon attempted to depict the former situation on the U.S. southern border regarding the federal government’s “zero tolerance policy” and police brutality. (The caption states, “Meanwhile, far from the border … children are being separated from their families,” along with a law enforcement officer pointing a gun at an African-American youth.) Is this an extreme comparison? Yes. Do we agree with this comparison? No, because the former “zero tolerance” policy was a government policy, while actions that constitute police brutality are not condoned by government. The cartoon represents an invalid comparison, but many editorial cartoons make invalid comparisons, exaggerate the truth and portray presidents as gross caricatures of who they really are. This is what editorial cartoons do.

• It needs to be said that the comparison depicted by the cartoon (a “zero tolerance” immigration policy to police brutality) can be interpreted differently. For example, African-Americans may see the cartoon’s comparison in a completely different light - and this needs to be understood.

• The cartoon is not an attempt to disparage all law enforcement, much less first-responders. Law enforcement officers are human beings. We hold the belief that the vast majority of law enforcement officers strive to enforce the law and to protect the public. This is a belief we strongly hold - and for good reason. And this editorial cartoon in no way changes that. When law enforcement deserves criticism, we will provide criticism. When law enforcement deserves credit for the sometimes-thankless job it does, we will be the first to offer praise. This editorial cartoon in no way changes this policy.

• The goal of a vibrant and relevant Opinion page is to provide a diverse view on topics and issues. Any Opinion page that offers the same political views over and over - whether these views reflect the right or the left - is a stale, boring and irrelevant Opinion page. Right below the aforementioned editorial cartoon in both the A-J and AGN print pages was a column by Coulter. Speaking of immigration, which was part of the topic of the cartoon, Coulter made several valid points about the dangers of unchecked illegal immigration - and for the most part we agree with Coulter’s column. Coulter’s column provides an interesting contrast to the invalid comparison depicted in the editorial cartoon. (And again, it should be noted, speaking of diversity, that both the cartoon and Coulter’s column are from the same publishing source.)

To make a long editorial short, Monday’s editorial cartoon made an extreme comparison with which we do not agree. But what is more important than agreement is to provide an outlet which presents differing viewpoints and opinions. This freedom of thought and opinion is invaluable and priceless in a true republic.

re: #77 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

The cartoon looks accurate from where I’m sitting. I’ve lost count of the number of unarmed Black (mostly) men who have been killed by police officers. No one is saying that all police officers are bad. There’s nothing controversial about pointing out a problem, however, which is the shoot to kill reflexive response that too many police officers have towards Blacks.

Ramos, the latest White mass shooter, was arrested alive and unharmed. Just saying.

re: #84 Patricia Kayden

The cartoon looks accurate from where I’m sitting. I’ve lost count of the number of unarmed Black (mostly) men who have been killed by police officers. No one is saying that all police officers are bad.

We proceeded from the assumption that more police officers = better police protection without giving enough thought of the quality of training involved in putting more officers out there.

And as we saw with Ferguson, MO, there is an inherent conflict of interest with a District Attorney who needs to cooperate with police to obtain indictments being compelled to initiate proceedings against a police officer for suspected criminal activity.

And the ubiquity of personal video cameras has altered the dynamic significantly…

Never heard of Fried Rice syndrome, maybe I won’t get Chinese for lunch. Well, who am I kidding, yes I am.

A Texas woman filed for $1 million in damages from a Chinese buffet after she allegedly suffered a terrifying bout of “fried rice syndrome.”

Germaine Mobley, 62, said went to Asian King Buffet in Waxahachie for a lunch in 2016 that left her gravely ill in an intensive care unit, the Dallas News reported.

Mobley claimed in the lawsuit that she was sickened by Bacillus cereus, also known as “fried rice syndrome,” a type of bacteria often found in foods kept at room temperature.

Mobley said she ordered fried rice at the restaurant and began to feel sick during the drive home.

“Everything tasted fine,” Mobley told news station WFMY.

Mobley, who had pre-existing health conditions, went to the hospital the following day when her health continued to deteriorate, according to the news station.

“I just started vomiting,” she told WFMY. “The next morning, I was having problems breathing, so my husband called an ambulance.”

She stayed in the ICU for eight days, where she was put on a ventilator, according to the Dallas News.

“‘Fried rice syndrome’ sounds like a joke, but it’s very serious,” Mobley’s attorney Kathryn Knotts told the Dallas News.

When I was a kid I had what was much later called “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome”, which is apparently an allergy to MSG. My dad tried to take us to Chinese restaurants a couple of times, but I’d start to pass out just from the fumes, before the food even got there.

I got over it fortunately, like most of my childhood allergies, but it still seems I feel really bloated after eating at some places, which I suspect is due to their using more MSG than most.

Hate to be cynical but I’d be surprised if DHS allowed those cards to actually reach any detained child. This administration is trying to make life intolerable for migrants. That’s the whole point of separating families in the first place.

On some level, the concept of DHS being bombarded with millions of letters of kindness and humanity is larger than anything actually reaching the children.

Her mom married a hard rock miner and she ran two hotels in Blackhawk and Central City during the boom. Sent my grandmother back to Cork for a “proper education”.

And then there’s a whole people should have served Sarah Sanders and Maxine Waters should not use those words, because it’s not hospitable. Then we come to the end and her supreme hypocrisy:

She’d do it again. She’d tell the doctor (not ask) again: “When are you going to stop killing babies?” This is fucking bullshit. (Here’s the whole piece of trash: thegospelcoalition.org )

She got a number of laudatory tweets, but I gave her a piece of my mind in several tweets.

Tired of this bullshit. And yes, pro-lifers have had 45 years to convince people of the rightness of their cause, but instead it’s become exquisitely clear how much they want to control the bodies of women. For that, they can surely fuck off.

Got a little larger than expected paycheck today so I threw $15 at the preferred Democratic candidate for my congressional district. They’re using ActBlue so I’ve just signed up for enormous amounts of SPAM, but the candidate is actually - I feel - pretty damn good.

The “About Me” blurb says a lot to me:

I’m a 24-year retired veteran of the United States Military. I spent three years on active duty working as an Electrician’s Mate in the U.S. Navy followed by twenty-one years in the Naval Reserve and Minnesota Air National Guard. Following my active duty enlistment, I worked as a union locomotive electrician and train dispatcher for the BNSF Railroad before attending college and graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. I then worked as a Deputy Sheriff of Corrections at the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, Minnesota for two and a half years and applied to University of Wisconsin Law School. After earning my law degree, I settled in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin and practiced law focusing much of my time on Guardian ad Litem work.

Following the 2016 elections, I joined together with my neighbors in Polk County to help organize our local Democratic Party. I’m running for Congress because I love my country and I am concerned for its future. The people of northern and western Wisconsin need to know that someone is standing up for them in Washington. I will be your fierce advocate and steadfast guardian.

I am active in local public service groups, including American Legion Post 278 in Balsam Lake and the Community Referral Agency (CRA) domestic violence shelter serving Polk, Burnett and Barron counties.

The difference:

Ryan on King’s overt goddamned Nazi stance. He’s entitled to his opinion (refuses to censure/attack him for being a goddamned Nazi) and we still accept him in the GOP.

Pelosi/Schumer on Waters: be more civil.

Voters see the difference. And it’s time that the Democrats’ leadership “man” up and rise up and take a position against Trump in the most active and aggressive manner in Congress. They’re the minority party, but the GOP was able to fight through being the minority to complete control over Congress, the redistricting system, and are actively subverting the electoral system. They’re also packing the courts with right wing extremists.

Do what you have to and don’t spare the language. Civility went out the window long ago. Comity was destroyed in the Senate thanks to McConnell. Schumer needs to understand that there’s no going back based on what McConnell did. The Supreme Court is going to be lost for a generation at least, and that can and will lead to an undoing of so much social progress - or worse - prevent additional social progress (like expanded health coverage or enviromental justice, etc.)

Retaking the House in November is an absolute necessity. Trying to gain back the Senate is critical but unlikely given the class year - more Democrats’ seats at stake. But that doesn’t mean we can’t fight for every goddamned seat across the country.

It’s because our very lives are at stake. Our votes matter. Our voices matter. And it’s time that the Democrats speak as one against this vile admin instead of 2 steps forward, 1 step back, then another, then another, a half step forward, repeat.

Time to remind everyone of this article from last August from the Dallas News Opinion Pages.

It may be simple to explain why Mitch and Gang are so standoffish about Trump and Vlad. They got paid.

Add this to the revelation that many GOPers also got money from the NRA which is probably also Russian gifting only not direct, the NRA was the bag man.

They all got paid. The current U.S. government was bought by the Russians. The GOP is their shiny new toy.

Note: The article was updated in May 2018 due to revelations of Micheal Cohen also getting money from a Russian oligarch.

How Putin’s oligarchs funneled millions into GOP campaigns

As Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team probes deeper into potential collusion between Trump officials and representatives of the Russian government, investigators are taking a closer look at political contributions made by U.S. citizens with close ties to Russia.

Buried in the campaign finance reports available to the public are some troubling connections between a group of wealthy donors with ties to Russia and their political contributions to President Donald Trump and a number of top Republican leaders. And thanks to changes in campaign finance laws, the political contributions are legal. We have allowed our campaign finance laws to become a strategic threat to our country.
An example is Len Blavatnik, a dual U.S.-U.K. citizen and one of the largest donors to GOP political action committees in the 2015-16 election cycle. Blavatnik’s family emigrated to the U.S. in the late ’70s from the U.S.S.R. and he returned to Russia when the Soviet Union began to collapse in the late ’80s.

Data from the Federal Election Commission show that Blavatnik’s campaign contributions dating back to 2009-10 were fairly balanced across party lines and relatively modest for a billionaire. During that season he contributed $53,400. His contributions increased to $135,552 in 2011-12 and to $273,600 in 2013-14, still bipartisan.

In 2015-16, everything changed. Blavatnik’s political contributions soared and made a hard right turn as he pumped $6.35 million into GOP political action committees, with millions of dollars going to top Republican leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham.

In 2017, donations continued, with $41,000 going to both Republican and Democrat candidates, along with $1 million to McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund.

The whole anti-abortion/infanticide principal came about as the early Christians were trying to integrate themselves into the vastly more conservative Roman culture than the original messages of Christ or even Paul (there is no Jew or Greek, no free or slave, etc) were. There was already a distaste for the casual disregard of infants in Rome or worse in the earlier Phoenician/Carthaginian religion where actual child sacrifice was practiced. In this the Christians tried to stake out a moral high ground while still being within the Roman culture (Timothy, Titus and the other psuedo-Pauline Epistles show this conservative Roman appeasement). At least with the anti-infanticide and the expectation that the child should be raised appropriately, the early Christians were far more moral and consistent than the, so-called, Pro-life swine of the modern era.

Well, the UN smacks President Manger Merde down over his choice for the UN Refugee Commission post!

Seems they don’t want an asshole associated with Pulpit Pimp Franky Graham Cracker running the agency!

The UN migration agency on Friday voted down Ken Isaacs, the Trump administration’s candidate to lead the International Organization for Migration, a US official told CNN, leaving it without an American at the helm since 1951.

Isaacs once wrote on Twitter that Austria and Switzerland should consider building a wall in the Alps to keep refugees out.

The tweet is one of more than 140 previously unreported tweets from before Isaacs was nominated reviewed by CNN’s KFile.

Here’s the story Politico wrote about it way, way back in April 2017 as the Gorsuch confirmation loomed:

“Say hello to your boy,” Trump said, “Special guy.” “Your kids have been very nice to him,” Kennedy replied. “Well,” Trump said, “they love him, and they love him in New York.”

While the White House is focused this week on shepherding Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, through the Senate confirmation process, the president and his team are obsessed with the next possible vacancy.

The likeliest candidate is Kennedy, who has sat at the decisive fulcrum of the most important Supreme Court cases for more than a decade. Replacing him with a reliable conservative would tip the court to the right, even if no other seat comes open under Trump — whose team has taken to exploring every imaginable line of communication to keep tabs on the justice and to make him comfortable as he ponders a potential retirement.

One back channel is the fact that Kennedy’s son, Justin, knows Donald Trump Jr. through New York real estate circles. Another is through Kennedy’s other son, Gregory, and Trump’s Silicon Valley adviser Peter Thiel. They went to Stanford Law School together and served as president of the Federalist Society in back-to-back years, according to school records. More recently, Kennedy’s firm, Disruptive Technology Advisers, has worked with Thiel’s company Palantir Technologies.

In fact, during the early months of the Trump administration, Gregory Kennedy has worked at NASA as a senior financial adviser as part of the so-called “beachhead” team. Both Kennedy boys were spotted at the White House last month for the administration’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration (Justice Kennedy is Irish Catholic). In February, Ivanka Trump attended oral arguments of the Supreme Court with her daughter. She was a guest of Justice Kennedy.

Yeah, the culture of AM talk radio has always flown a little under the radar, but I think it’s been pretty influential in shaping, or confirming, a certain range of attitudes and prejudices, and of course it must be said, it’s always been extremely, um, not civil. So this “loss” of civility some on the right are starting to complain about has very deep roots in its own soil, as they very well know.

I should’ve added this article; it’s a couple of years old, but it’ll give readers an idea. It partly explains why vinyl is so popular here in the Czech Republic.

All Zdeněk Pelc wanted, as record sales succumbed to the hi-tech onslaught of the digital age, was to head Europe’s final vinyl production factory.

Now the ambition to be last man standing where others have fallen has bloomed into an unlikely business success that would have been unimaginable when his once old-fashioned plant was the heart of the former communist Czechoslovakia’s state-run record industry.

From the rustic setting of Loděnice - an unprepossessing village of 1,640 people in the Czech Republic’s Bohemian hills, 16 miles south of Prague - Pelc’s company, GZ Media, has become the global leader fuelling an unforeseen revival of vinyl records.

A product once regarded as a relic of a bygone era has made an unexpected comeback, thanks partly to the doggedness of Pelc, 65, who could not bear to preside over the death of vinyl even when it appeared obsolete.

And here’s a nice little zinger:

With upward trends continuing, GZ Media will produce 25m records this year, a 40% increase on 2015 figures.

That is far more than rival companies in Germany and the US. The firm’s success recently prompted it to buy a vinyl plant in Memphis, Tennessee, and open a new one on a green field site near Toronto.

theguardian.com

On a side note, this factory is hiring pretty much anyone that’s breathing in order to meet the demand for vinyl LP’s.

I know it’s not for everyone. And of course, it’s all subjective - personal preference.

Czechs are taking a good deal of pride in GZ Vinyl being a genuine world leader in that particular product. “Well, at least we’re #1 in something good” seems to be the general attitude.

I can’t help but notice the stark difference in the way DJT talks about our allies in regard to trade issues and how he talks about Russia and it’s well known meddling campaign.

On trade, he routinely yells, abuses, insults, allied countries, claiming that they’ve been ripping us off and taking advantage of us, etc, and how he, with his great MAGA trade policies will end this abuse. And of course, these tirades are almost always bereft of actual data and details.

But with Russia, this combative tone and bullying attitude disappears. Instead, he tries to divert blame from Russia to someone else, anyone else, and when that fails, just kind of shrugs his shoulders and says rather meekly that, hey, don’t we want good relations with Russia?

It’s not just there… vinyl has been having a resurgence here too, especially among the millennials. It’s CDs and downloads that are now on the downswing, because streaming is now king for on-the-go listening and people are going back to vinyl for serious listening at home.

Pressing plants are reopening and new ones are popping up all over the country, with Jack White being one of the leading proponents; his Third Man Records studio here in Nashville has the only live-to-vinyl recording suite in the US and he recently opened up a pressing plant in Detroit. Hell, Sony has reopened one of their Japanese pressing plants that had been shuttered for a couple of decades; that’s saying something right there.

It’s not just there… vinyl has been having a resurgence here too, especially among the millennials. It’s CDs and downloads that are now on the downswing, because streaming is now king for on the go and people are going back to vinyl for serious listening at home.

Pressing plants are reopening and new ones are popping up all over the country, with Jack White being one of the leading proponents; his Third Man Records studio has the only live-to-vinyl recording suite in the US and he recently opened up a pressing plant in Detroit. Hell, Sony has reopened one of their Japanese pressing plants that had been shuttered for a couple of decades; that’s saying something right there.

I’ve certainly noticed that the new pressings - even of classics like “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Number of the Beast” are mostly on 180 gram virgin vinyl. I have both of those on LP and it’s really great sound.

Now, I just have to get a kick-ass 1980’s monster stereo system and I’ll be set, LOL. Get me some speakers that can vibrate the plaster right off the walls. :D

I know it’s not for everyone. And of course, it’s all subjective - personal preference.

Czechs are taking a good deal of pride in GZ Vinyl being a genuine world leader in that particular product. “Well, at least we’re #1 in something good” seems to be the general attitude.

Well, see that’s part of why I mention both FOMA & JJ - both are world leaders in their categories. I prefer FOMA (especially branded as arista.edu) over Ilford or Kodak and JJ are the only new tubes I buy for my amp.

And I’d love to afford a new mauser based hunting rifle from CZ…

The Czechs do many things very well.

re: #211 Sir John Barron

Spit

I’ve always thought that Trump’s noticeably-different attitude towards Russia (vis-a-vis “real” allies) stems from the fact that they probably own him. Literally. AFAICT, the extent of the Trump Organization’s debts (or Donald’s, personally) to Russian-connected interests has never been thoroughly explored (still less exposed) - I’m thinking that the possible uncovering of these foreign liabilities is what lies behind Trump’s frothing ranting at even the barest mention of official inquiry (say, by Robert Mueller) into his “personal business”.

IMO, what used to be quaintly regarded as “corruption” on the grandest scale (the POTUS having enormous and undisclosed financial obligations to foreign lenders?) - shrugged/blown-off by the Congressional Majority out of raw power-grabbing and generally ignored/dismissed by the media.

Heh.

Vinyl is really popular here. Hell, as little as five years ago, you could find a record player for free - people were giving them away.

Now…….prices of turntables have shot through the roof. Even old, fully-functional Communist-era turntables are selling for a small fortune.

And the music stores here in town are frantically trying to make space for LP’s again.

There’s been a similar process in the UK for the past decade. (And, from what I’ve seen in Dublin today, is a similar story in the Republic of Ireland. Oh, did I mention I’m currently in Dublin on Pride Weekend?) It’s like of weird how it happened: first it was second hand record players and records. Then, when Ryan they become more like goldust, then new players and records were produced at premium prices. You’re lucky to get a cheap and nasty USB connected player for under £100. Meanwhile, the going rate for single albums (generally pressed in heavy 180gsm) is £18, which is more than they would have cost on CD when prices were at their height in the early 90s in the UK.

Note that is not just some audiophile “Ultimate Deluxe Edition” reserved for classic albums. Most major releases also receive this treatment. The flagship FFOP record store in Glasgow’s Union Street used to be majority CD and DVD, with one shelf for vinyl, usually DJ/dance releases. Now, vinyl- newly pressed, takes just over half of the floorspace from the front of stores onwards.

Perhaps most important, Trump used the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to demonstrate to Kennedy how his own legacy could be preserved. He ensured that Kennedy was involved in swearing in Gorsuch, who used to clerk for him—something that gave Kennedy “virtually parental pride,” Turley told me, describing Kennedy’s obvious delight at the ceremony’s after-party. After Gorsuch was sworn in, the White House made sure to float two more potential Supreme Court candidates—Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and Judge Raymond Kethledge—both of whom also clerked for Kennedy.

DONALD TRUMP MADE JUSTICE KENNEDY AN OFFER HE COULDN’T REFUSE

Behind the scenes, the president worked for months to assure Kennedy his legacy would be in good hands. “I think the Gorsuch nomination had a huge impact,” one law professor said.

I quite agree about the “useful idiot” part (emphasis on the latter) - but what really chaps my @ss is that under Trump - well, actually, as much the GOP Congress, too - even the vaguest notions of “ethical” behavior in elected officials (including, but not limited to, blatant financial conflicts-of-interest and/or profiteering) seem to have not just fallen by the wayside, but been vigorously tossed out the window, and run over several times, with little public awareness (still less outrage), and IOKIYAR enshrined as a guiding principle of government.

And even “60% debt” is 60% too much for ethical governing.

Want to read an interesting and tragic story about the journey of a high school soccer ball?

Even though it all happened so long ago, this is the first time I think anyone heard this about a soccer ball and its connection to one of the astronauts that was lost aboard Challenger when it broke up in flight back in January 1986.

I’m only going to post the intro to the story. Breaking out any small part of a fairly long piece does it no justice.

Sometimes ESPN gets it right with a sports story that is so much bigger than sports.

ESPN - Mission Accomplished

In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger stunned the nation when it broke apart 73 seconds into flight. This is the story of the soccer ball that survived — and the family that sent it into space, twice.

The Trump White House is suggesting that there is a difference between innocent and “non-innocent” journalists, and only innocent journalists don’t deserve to be shot.

And the WH gets to determine who is innocent and who is a walking target.

In the zeal to create a postcard sized document, they’ve basically made it even more complex because they shifted a bunch of lines to separate worksheets that have to be completed. There’s also the double sided nature of the filing, which means that paper returns will need additional scanning (or have double-sided scanners in place for the 2019 tax season). Right now, tax returns are all single sided.

This doesn’t simplify anything. Taxpayers who currently itemize may still need to run the numbers as if they are itemizing to see if they benefit from the standard deduction or not. Some taxpayers will find out that they’re getting hit with higher costs because of the tax plan’s fallout in high tax states.

Oh, and every single state that bases their tax on the federal returns (line 28, line 32, etc.) will have to update their tax returns to address the changes.

If the IRS and Congress wanted true simplification, they would have ordered the IRS to send out a pre-filled return to everyone showing the information that the IRS already gets from everyone - the W2, 1099, etc., as they do now to verify your prepared return. We should then be able to amend/modify with the additional deductions/credits, which the IRS doesn’t have.

That would simplify things to the point of making it all signing the returns and accepting the tax statement (pay underpaying tax/credit for overpayment). It would essentially kill off tax prep companies, but they’re the ones who profit from all these changes if you’re not using turbotax or similar product to do your own taxes.

The remarkable thing is that the letter was signed by a majority of the special agents in charge of ICE’s field offices.

Just shows how far the Deep State has penetrated our government…

That makes the track look small. Hell, it hardly looks like the same track as when something somewhat, marginally, ever so slightly more reasonable takes a good 7 1/2 minutes to go round. It’s a scary track at the best of times but geesh.

Meanwhile, the unprecedented Emoluments & Trump Conflicts Of Interest stories continue (and continue to get lost in the TrumpSwamp). ProPublica has found $16.1 million in political and taxpayer spending at Trump properties:

and this is why Mueller is pointless: if Congress can ignore these blatant and egregious high crimes and misdemeanors, why the fuck would they care about some FBI report?

A report that they are preemptively and in some instances probably illegally trying to obstruct.

BTW, in all the jabber out there regarding the Annapolis newspaper shootings, has there been any substantive evidence* uncovered that would indicate there was any political/quasi-political/ideological component to Jarrod Ramos’ rampage?
AFAICT, Ramos appears to have been the common-or-garden variety nutcase, pissed off at the paper over what seem fundamentally personal issues. Though it was pretty apparent there might have been a problem brewing, as those “issues” were related to his being publicized as a harassing stalker prone to making violent threats….

Wiki:

The conspiracy theory was initially promoted by Alex Jones and Jerome Corsi,[4] but in May 2018 Right Wing Watch reported that Jones and Corsi had ceased to support QAnon, declaring the source to now be “completely compromised.”[5]

When you’ve lost Alex Jones and Jerome Corsi….

He must know that track extremely well, like having driven it hundreds of times because that is considered 170 turms.

And he did hit 228 mph on the long straight.

Another amazing thing…that car was stuck to the track. There are many places where F1 cars used to “jump” from crests in the track. His aero down force seemed to keep him firmly on the ground…a good thing.

Amazing.

That report nevertheless is extremely important.

It will be leaked to the press where American can read it. One way or another.

I meant that it will not lead Congress to act on it directly…it will likely have an effect on public opinion, though.
