Jason Kessler is the guy who is trying to get a permit to hold a follow up “Unite the Right” hate rally in Washington DC in August is having a bad time of late.
Yesterday, Unicorn Riot, a deconstructed group of artists and journalists (as in, “probably more anarchy that LGF people are used to, but they do go after Nazis”), got their hands on and published a log of Facebook chats by Kessler and others who are trying to put together the DC hate rally. It’s the usual swamp of “we’re not really violent” but “we’re looking for Hammerskins to help us” and “we need to get buses for Charlottesville” (apparently they’re going to try again in Cville!?) but “don’t call anywhere near there.” And so on.
More amusingly, Kessler was interrupted by his father last night while he was doing a livestream with another white supremacist. Apparently Jason’s father doesn’t approve of his son’s Nazi tendencies.
Kessler, 34, is living with his family because he’s embroiled in lawsuits.

1) How to build in a profit margin at each stage, and

I was reminded, after reading about Millennials’ greater acceptance of Socialism, of Tom Nichols’ pet theory on economic inequality, which states that the problem is not that economic inequality is so great, but that nowadays we can use the internet to compare our lives with people better off than we are, which makes us unhappy.
For example, he thinks the problem for Millennials is not that they have fewer opportunities than their parents, or that all the trappings of successful adult life are so much farther out of their reach, or that they are buried under debt for education we told them is the key to a happy successful life if not an absolute necessity, but which doesn’t get them the highly paid jobs we got at their ages. No, the problem is that they know that others are doing better. If they didn’t KNOW that, they’d be happy with living with their parents at the age of 30.
He expanded on this the other day, saying it was the driving force behind Trump’s ascendancy. Trump’s supporters, he claimed, were upset, not because all the jobs where they live went away, or because they see the benefits of being white - which for some was the only thing going for them - diminishing. No, it was that they saw the rich doing better than them. He thinks this envy made them susceptible to con men like Trump.
Like a lot of folks - and I include myself - Nichols loves his theory. But like a large subset of those who love their theories, he twists and distorts reality to fit it. For example, it ignores the fact that most Trumpkins worship the VERY rich, and even the just plain old rich. But they HATE, with the heat of a thousand suns, the folks who went off to college and now are doing just a bit better than they are. And they were all pretty happy with the idea of a tax cut that barely did anything for them, but made things for the very rich a lot better.
Plus, how do you explain their sneering contempt for those less well off than they are?

Me? I got kicked out of graduate school. A little over a year later, I took a job that paid the equivalent of $50,000 today, on the basis of, really, ONE YEAR of experience in a lab, because Biotech was still in its infancy, and they needed hands.
I KNOW how lucky I was. But too many of my generation think that’s how it is today.

I went to state schools, had summer jobs and did ten hours a week in the library stocking shelves to cover expenses. Also had a BEOG and graduated debt-free.

This is a gross mischaracterization of Mormon women. I have lived in Mormon country for nearly a quarter century and know many Mormon women. They push hard against this attitude they hear from some men.
I’d also note that although Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, is no longer Mormon, she was born and raised one.
ETA: yeah, this is a pushback on behalf of the many Mormon women I know who are teachers, scientists, lawyers (especially lawyers), etc.

For a minor league club sure but what bothers me is that there’s definitely someone ten years younger than him who has the potential to get better that is being held back by the Mets using Tebow as a gimmick. If Tebow weren’t a former Heisman Trophy winner with a huge national reputation, fans would hate this. It’s nothing against Tebow personally but I really think the Mets are doing a disservice here.

Way too many of my fellow Boomers refuse to understand just how lucky we were, compared to those who came before and after. They rattle on about how they worked their way through college, which turns out to have been pushing the Idiot Stick for a few hours a week while attending a State School which then was damn near free, but now costs 40% or more of median wage.
Me? I got kicked out of graduate school. A little over a year later, I took a job that paid the equivalent of $50,000 today, on the basis of, really, ONE YEAR of experience in a lab, because Biotech was still in its infancy, and they needed hands.

Which, unfortunately, has affected two generations: the postwar Baby Boomers themselves, and the following generation: all of whom have lived the bulk of their lives with a well-defined set of economic expectations, which are only now being recognized as the outcome of unique circumstances, and unlikely to continue into the future (and this mainly by the Millenials who are going to have live - and earn - with the consequences).
Not an original idea with me: this is basically a crib from Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2015). A book which, btw, I’ve always thought was grossly underappreciated.

I’m glad he’s tried his hand at something new and he’s far from the worst bust ever but he really is someone who I think can’t accept that he peaked as an athlete ten years ago. And I get that, I wish I still had what I had when he and I were that age ten years ago but it really rubs me the wrong way that his entire professional sports existence strikes me as a gimmick. He’s not an All Star because he’s a legitimately good player, he’s an All Star because he’s Tim Tebow and to be fair to him, he’s not the first or last person this will happen to but I think he needs ot earn it. I think he is shooting for a point where what he has makes complete sense as far as a pattern of how all of this occurred. If he still has ends that he knows he can tie to make a better case, he will. Once he gets enough for a good solid unquestioning* case I think he will publish.
Hopefully they can keep any investigations open saying in the report the details are still being discovered and more indictments and people included in the case to come.

Gotcha. The thing about capitalism and socialism is they are systems. I think we need to realize that both offer viable ideas.
More importantly they are tools. And in many ways perceptual tools. They affect the way we see the world.
The problem with both systems is that people like to infuse their tools with ethical qualities. Capitalism is ‘good’ and socialism ‘bad’, or vice versa. This makes it difficult or impossible for people to use these tools with care and restraint.
But tools only do what their operators tell them to do. If not used wisely they will do more harm than good.

I think Mueller is waiting because, from a prosecutorial perspective, you need to get your ducks in a row to make a RICO case stand up in a court of law.
Motive, method, opportunity. You’ve got to know WHO was involved, WHAT they did, WHEN the illegal acts took place, and HOW they benefited those involved.
Putting a complex RICO case together is telling a convincing story to a jury, or, in this case, the American people, to support the impeachment of a sitting President for high crimes and misdemeanors.
And make no mistake, Mueller is constructing a RICO case of Russian Oligarchs laundering money through Trump real estate holdings to support the Trump organization with investments he couldn’t get from American banks. Duetsche Bank was in it up to their necks, and has already gotten the shit fined out of them. And Kennedy’s son was leading their real estate division when the suspect money movement was occurring. Sessions knew this.

I think Mueller is waiting because, from a prosecutorial perspective, you need to get your ducks in a row to make a RICO case stand up in a court of law.
Motive, method, opportunity. You’ve got to know WHO was involved, WHAT they did, WHEN the illegal acts took place, and HOW they benefited those involved.
Putting a complex RICO case together is telling a convincing story to a jury, or, in this case, the American people, to support the impeachment of a sitting President for high crimes and misdemeanors.
And make no mistake, Mueller is constructing a RICO case of Russian Oligarchs laundering money through Trump real estate holdings to support the Trump organization with investments he couldn’t get from American banks. Duetsche Bank was in it up to their necks, and has already gotten the shit fined out of them. And Kennedy’s son was leading their real estate division when the suspect money movement was occurring. Sessions knew this.
That’s why Kennedy resigned after he sent out invites for new interns this fall. To save his son. If a fish rots from the head down, and it surely does, then the head is the Trump Administration and the Trump Corporations (which are the same damn thing).
That’s an interesting thought. TBH I’m frustrated that Trump’s ties to Kennedy’s son weren’t published. True story. Up until a few years ago, I had never left even a blowout Twins game early, because there’s always that chance at a miraculous comeback. (That first game I left early was because it was 40 degrees outside and we were losing badly near the end of the game; it wound up not being as lopsided on the scoreboard at the end, but we did still lose.)

I think they’ve been to a Nats game or two but they had never been to Camden Yards so they got the full experience from a fanatic.
One of my gaming buddies got treated to a trip to Fenway this past weekend when he was visiting one of our other teammates who lives in Massachusetts. I was insanely jealous because Fenway and Wrigley are at the top of my bucket list for sports venues to visit. Sad thing is, I lived in the Northwest Indiana suburbs for a decade and while I’ve been to Old Komiskey a couple of times, I never made the trip up to the North Side to Wrigley.

Old Komiskey was always a dive. It felt so sketchy. I dunno if it was that part of town or what, but I always felt a little insecure being there. That being said, watching Big Frankie Thomas step to the plate for the Pale Hose was the highlight of my budding baseball fanaticism, to be equaled only by arriving at Target Field to see “J. Thome DH” penciled into the Minnesota Twins’ lineup.

Growing up with constant 24 hour social media is something that no one knows how to do.

According to court documents, the California Department of Justice raided Jeffrey Scott Kirschenmann’s home last month, after he tried to register an illegally modified gun online through the state’s website.

One of the most harrowing stories I have as a professional fireworks operator: One year, we had the Big Disaster strikes our site. 30 minutes prior to our scheduled start time, rain came. To prevent deterioration of our major investment, we immediately fired everything in the tubes (we had pre-loaded the first salvo) and proceeded to fire the entire show in rapid sequence, not knowing if we would be able to complete the show due to the rain. Unfortunately for us, this year included a complex loading sequence of chain-fused shells, which had to be loaded in order across a sequence of tubes; cross-loading meant that one or more shells would not be resting against the base of the tube, leaving a cushion of air that would cause low detonation. Sure enough, I was in back with the 8” shells (which are individually loaded and thus immune to the problem), while my father is in the front with the 3” chain-loaded finale sequence. Unbeknownst to me, one of our loaders has cross-loaded two of the 3” shells in the sequence. One comes flopping out directly at my father’s feet. 20 yards away, I am powerless to act as I see the shell come plopping lifelessly out of its tube and he sprints away at his top speed. Miraculously, he survived the incident and we completed the show without complication. Let that be a lesson to all: Always check your goddamn loading prior to lighting the match.

In Oklahoma or Nebraska, I might actually be eligible for that position. In Minnesota, I have to have a contiguous record of professional experience. By the time I had moved to MN, my resume was in the distant past, so I no longer qualified as a professional operator.

It’s been many years, but one of the local communities had a nasty fireworks accident. One person was killed and two were injured, one of those badly. Fireworks can be dangerous…two Ohio examples.

The guy three houses over from us blew his arm clean off a few years ago.
Setting off 3 inch mortars with one of those barbeque lighters, and he’d been stting them off for two days. The cops told me that he had a cooler full of them on his front yard. He said if something went wrong and that cooler ignited it would have taken out half the block.
I leave fireworks to the pros.
