Sadly, I keep 2 in my image library. Necessarily so.
One of my (probable) ancestors died in the French & Indian wars, what the Brits may call the Seven Years’ war. At least on this continent, it was the precursor to what happened in 1776.
Ignored by the faux-patriotism industry is the very real problem the colonists were making for the Native Americans living around the Appalachian mountains.
Part of the American revolutionary war was about colonists not wanting to be controlled in their land grab. This was part of the problem 20 years prior during the Seven Years’ war.
If I could (and I can’t because I’m not an independent observer) evaluate the American revolution from the outside, the overthrowing of a monarchy for a representative democracy was a big step forward. Yet at the same time, having land-grabbing colonists going hog-wild over the hills was a form of genocide.

The bourbon storage facility in Bardstown, Kentucky that partially collapsed on June 22 has now completely fallen, according to media reports.
Reporter Julie Dolan with WLKY in Louisville reported that the collapse of the rest of the facility at the Barton 1792 Distillery in occurred Wednesday afternoon.
“They don’t know if there was any more spill,” John Chaudoin, dispatcher for Nelson County Dispatch, told The Enquire’s sister publication the Courier-Journal on Wednesday. “They’re still evaluating.”

I’m surprised the Moron-in-Chief didn’t include the usual Iran-bashing in this inane screed: IIRC, world oil markets edged up - among other reasons - in anticipation that the US is going to try to reduce Iranian oil exports to “zero” via an insanely restrictive sanctions regime*. Less Iranian oil on the market, of course, means less supply, therefore rising prices - mainly for the benefit of Trump’s BFFs, the Saudis, but that sort of basic economic principle is apparently beyond the capacity of The Donald’s pea-brain to grasp.
*good luck with that: I think China is Iran’s biggest oil customer under long-term purchase agreements: “zero” is probably the likelihood they’ll go along with The Idiot’s sanctions plan.
re: #62 Jay C

Basically an unhinged Iranian hardliner makes a false claim attacking Rouhani (‘2500 Iranians granted citizenship under JCPOA’) — Fox News peddles the claim, and Trump parrots Fox News. It is classed as Least Concern by the IUCN, due to its wide distribution and presumably large population.[1] Despite its small size, the least weasel is a fierce hunter, capable of killing a rabbit 5-10 times its own weight

No, I wasn’t referring to that: though thanks for the sourcing of that particular pile of bovine excrement: I was thinking of something I had read on a FP blog that the Trump Admin was readying plans to impose a strict, and worldwide, sanctions regime on Iran, focusing on (but not limited to) its oil exports: basically the usual Trumpian threats of severe sanctions and tariffs on any foreign government or business that does any sort of business with or in Iran of any kind. It’s not new, of course, I think they’ve been hawking this plan for a while: but the piece I read seemed to suggest that the idiots are actually planning to try to go through with it. And soon.

OK, gotta think they stumbled on a spot where the agent was originally prepped for final delivery, or residue was discarded post delivery.
Or, the Russians chose to contaminate some random people to prove the original contamination wasn’t a targeted attack against Putin opponents.
For a long time this was impossible without a kludgy Flash workaround, but in Javascript ES6 you can now copy some text to the clipboard with this nifty function:
const copyToClipboard = str => {
const textarea = document.createElement('textarea'),
selected = document.getSelection().rangeCount > 0
? document.getSelection().getRangeAt(0)
: false;
textarea.value = str;
textarea.setAttribute('readonly', '');
textarea.style.position = 'absolute';
textarea.style.left = '-9999px';
document.body.appendChild(textarea);
textarea.select();
document.execCommand('copy');
document.body.removeChild(textarea);
if (selected) {
document.getSelection().removeAllRanges();
document.getSelection().addRange(selected);
}
}
This function also saves and restores any existing selections, that would otherwise be lost when the injected textarea is selected.

Shit. There’s a strip mall near me with a big grocery store that I’ve shopped at for over 20 yrs. Other businesses all have come and gone, like a blockbuster store, martial arts school, hair and nail salon, etc. but the grocery store has been the constant. There’s been a unit empty in this little strip mall for over a year now and it looks like a “crisis pregnancy center” is going in. We already have one about 3 miles away in the other direction. I’ll be watching this closely…. I may need to go to Planned Parenthood and get some literature to hand out in front of the place. God I wish I could move away from this parade of idiots.

I don’t know what the temperature is here because it’s the kind of day when you don’t bother to look. Mid 70°s I think. Windows open, breezes blowing through… Don’t worry, they’re calling for low 90°s over the weekend so this won’t last. I’m taking advantage of all the open window weather by doing some interior painting. Not everything in the house, mostly just the doors and trim to brighten them up since I haven’t painted in over a decade.

It’s possible, but somewhere upthread it was mentioned that Trump can fire Sessions and install anyone else who cleared Senate approval for 200 days before they need to be approved again.
And that Pruitt somehow still has his law license. Moving him to (in)Justice to fire Rosenstein and Mueller, and establish it as Trump’s personal army, is not out of character for him, just a sign of a lack of character :-(

I have to ask: What is the legal process by which one’s citizenship can be revoked? I’m honestly curious.
Google: Divna Maslenjak
Supreme Court just ruled unanimously in her favor in a case where her citizenship was revoked because she lied on her application. Ruling was in Jan. 2017.
The process was carried out under US Code Title 18 Section 1425:
(a) Whoever knowingly procures or attempts to procure, contrary to law, the naturalization of any person, or documentary or other evidence of naturalization or of citizenship; or
(b) Whoever, whether for himself or another person not entitled thereto, knowingly issues, procures or obtains or applies for or otherwise attempts to procure or obtain naturalization, or citizenship, or a declaration of intention to become a citizen, or a certificate of arrival or any certificate or evidence of nationalization or citizenship, documentary or otherwise, or duplicates or copies of any of the foregoing—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 25 years (if the offense was committed to facilitate an act of international terrorism (as defined in section 2331 of this title)), 20 years (if the offense was committed to facilitate a drug trafficking crime (as defined in section 929(a) of this title)), 10 years (in the case of the first or second such offense, if the offense was not committed to facilitate such an act of international terrorism or a drug trafficking crime), or 15 years (in the case of any other offense), or both.
The problem SCOTUS had with Maslenjak’s conviction was that the jury was told that any false statement during the naturalization process was enough to convict her. She lied in her asylum request and said her husband was not in the Serbian armed forces when in fact she was aware that he had been in a Serbian militia that was accused of war crimes. SCOTUS ruled that the false statement had to be material and the erroneous jury instruction prevented it from reaching that necessary finding of fact. Therefore SCOTUS vacated the conviction and sent the case back for a retrial by a new jury.
After the Maslenjak case USCIS has updated its website to reflect this legal ruling:
1. Concealment of Material Fact or Willful Misrepresentation
A person is subject to revocation of naturalization if there is deliberate deceit on the part of the person in misrepresenting or failing to disclose a material fact or facts on his or her naturalization application and subsequent examination. In general, a person is subject to revocation of naturalization on this basis if:
•The naturalized U.S. citizen misrepresented or concealed some fact;
•The misrepresentation or concealment was willful;
•The misrepresented or concealed fact or facts were material; and
•The naturalized U.S. citizen procured citizenship as a result of the misrepresentation or concealment. [4]
Now the Maslenjak case was initially prosecuted by Obama’s DOJ, but I think the point of what Trump’s doing with this new advertised push to look for more denaturalization cases is to further the broad suspicion of immigrants in general and to create the moral panic that allows for a policy crack down on the creation of new (mostly non-white) citizens. If they can get some people’s citizenships revoked so much the better from their point of view, but the real goal here is to sow doubt over the validity of any immigrant’s identity as an American and to further rile up Trump’s white nationalist base.

Sid, as the self-appointed arbiter of everything animal protein, has decided to defy state law and the governor’s directives to go after…wait for it…your neighborhood BBQ spot. That’s right, even though the state of Texas has exempted small BBQ places from paying big bucks to certify their scales to weigh BBQ, ol’ Jesus Shot Sid himself has decided that, uncharacteristically, he is the Righteous Protector of BBQ Consumers, prosecuting independent pitmasters over a bullshit rule that he invented for some unknown reason, beyond being able to put his name on some Texas state certification sticker. You do know that he’s printed stickers to put his name on every gas pump in Texas, right?The only good news here is that Deep Fryer Sid is being opposed by an actual adult in the 2018 race. Kim Olson, retired Air Force officer, farmer, and Normal Person, is aggressively campaigning to retire him back to the ranch. We say, come on, Kim!

I hear fireworks everywhere but when I look out the window they’re all behind the trees.
Oh well at least WE HAVE THE TREES.
The fools around here have been setting them off since early last night. Right now, it sounds like somebody throwing hammers at the doors in my courtyard. I don’t even want to know which idiots are doing it, as it will just make me crazier than I already am.

FFS why. Because we’re not seen with enough skepticism there. If he did that, he would have rallied people around Maduro like Hitler’s invasion united people behind Stalin. The old he’s our sob adage.
The sun is now down here, and the fireworks are going up. Fortunately, unlike Teleskiguy a couple hundred miles from us, we’ve had tons of rain so the chance of starting a prairie fire isn’t very high.

Same here in the wild north country. In fact, it was raining earlier today. The rivers are in flood (probably the latest they’ve been breaking their banks, but I’d have to check) and we are in possibly the least danger we’ve been in years.

And whose bright idea was it to celebrate a day in #highsummer with fireworks?!?
That would be John Adams’ idea.

I’ve been skimming the threads of all of these senators posting from Russia, and, while I haven’t done an exhaustive search, I’m not finding a reply defending any of them. I’m not saying they don’t exist, but the ratio is really skewed toward thrashing them.
Gaa, there is continuous fireworks now. How is it a town of 132 people has so much fireworks in one place?
re: #135 teleskiguy
That was a fucked up day and night for most of us. I’m sorry, too.
See, this how to make nice. This is how to make a community. Well done, both of you.

It is probably just coincidence that a disproportionate fraction of the state’s small BBQ joints are run by black entrepreneurs.

Can you purchase fireworks in Nebraska? I know Wyoming has more firework stands than Starbucks shops.

If you had that same energy before you saw that pic, cool. I get that.
But I will not let SS solely guide how I feel about certain folks. I’m good with Lamb so far and Alexandria so far. Cool with, not exalting as much more than a piece of the big tent, at this point.

We have a slightly different problem with our fireworks here.
Wellington’s Matariki fireworks could be called off until a large whale leaves the harbour.
Fuck. Just coming down the wire. Confirmed over 100 homes destroyed in the Spring Fire in southern Colorado.
re: #156 A Mom Anon
Also, and I hope this doesn’t piss anyone off, but is it just me or is anyone else sick of country music being the ONLY american music that matters? I hate it. I cannot stand 99 percent of this crap. Chris Stapleton is cool, maybe a couple others, but what about American rock bands? Why are there little if any 4th of July celebrations featuring rock and roll? We have some pretty good bands from the US, what the hell?
I don’t know, I’ve always had a spontaneous orgasm whenever I’ve listened to Lee Greenwood’s I’m Proud To Be An American.
On the other hand, I generally vomit uncontrollably whenever I hear a Dixie Chicks song.
Maybe that’s just me.

And now we got ANOTHER Republican unable to keep Mr. Pee Pee in his pants—Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill…

This fire was started by an illegal immigrant. But he’s white and from Denmark, so no need for forceful condemnation from our president*.

Respect to all who have served or are serving in our military—I don’t think it mutually exclusive to suggest that every once in awhile the 4th speeches also say “thank you” to the brave men and women who have worked hard to try to keep us out of needless wars.
Yes, but the military is not the point of THIS day. It’s about all of us. Veterans like me, citizens like the rest of us. We are all part of this great country and we need to celebrate We The People. We are in charge and we must control our destiny. Dead stop.

re: #288 teleskiguy
He’s cool too. But most of the shit that’s trumped (heh) up to be by god country music is crap. It’s “southern pop” at best. That’s the shit that gets touted as Real American music. It’s annoying that it gets wrapped in the flag and of course The Troops are always stuck in there too. It’s just, gah!

I don’t know if you can or not. There aren’t any fireworks stands in the Panhandle so probably not.
That said, Wyoming is not that far from here.

Every border town has huge fireworks stands. I used to buy them by the bushel in Baggs when I lived in Steamboat Springs.

Trump’s causing chaos and discord among the US and its allies, and is calling on OPEC to cut oil prices.
None of the OPEC countries have any reason to do so. That’s not how supply and demand works.
This goes beyond merely a matter of supply and demand, this is world financial geopolitics.
