We just finished watching a fireworks show from our deck. It’s a couple miles away, but you can’t beat the convenience of stepping out the door to watch. This year it was enlivened by commentary from a group of turkeys in the neighborhood. They appeared concerned.

We got just short of 2” of rain today in South Austin. Any rain in July is a blessing.

A sub-tropical low pressure system pushed in from the east, skirting the south shore of the Gulf of Mexico. It dumped 5-8” of rain in Houston, shutting down the major E/W Interstate highway west of town. It pretty much shut down the fourth most populous city in the country and stopped a huge amount of material passing through the city for several hours.

We all have become accustomed to “Infrastructure Week” being a joke with this administration, but this is a perfect example of why it isn’t funny. This country needs significant upgrades to its infrastructure to keep it working smoothly.

It’s well past time to demand that the Feds step up to the plate and pay for the improvements in transportation infrastructure, flood control mitigation, and climate change defense for coastal communities that are desperately needed.

This is not rocket science. This is why major insurance companies or reinsurers will no longer offer coverage to any development, be it industrial, commercial, or residential, on the majority of land that is less than 15’ above sea level.

They are all about risk, and they know the risk. That land is gone in fifty years.

True. I both hope and don’t hope Mueller has gone to the bottom of the rot. I mean, say our worst fears are realized and not only were US elections compromised, but most of a party (GOP) as well.
That would be tantamount to an act of war, and the US is not the only country that has had Uncle Vova and his Kremlin Crew interfere. To quote Adm. Josh Painter in Red October, “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”

Espinoza (the group’s leader) repeatedly uses a bogus statistic during her speeches, claiming that, “25 Americans or legal residents die each day at the hands of illegal aliens.” The origins of this come from Steve King, who since 2006 has claimed that “murderous illegal aliens” kill 12 U.S. citizens every day, while another 13 a day are left dead by “uninsured drunk driving illegals.”

Amongst other things, the group has reposted articles from Daily Stormer.

A number of people RP uses in their anti-immigrant campaigns have demanded RP stop using their images or names, and are considering suing.

I’m waiting for someone in the administration or within Trump’s circle of associates to blow the whistle loud and clear, someone who is willing to buck the chain of command and “do the right thing.” We see that in The Hunt for Red October, with Jack Ryan being an independent thinker despite being a desk-bound analyst and the sub commanders on Red October and Dallas trying to avoid nuclear annihilation. The recurring theme in The Expanse are mavericks like James Holden taking matters in their own hands to avoid the major political powers from fucking things up. Fictional and of course quite contrived to make dramatic stories, but that’s what our current real-life narrative needs: someone who defies the Mighty Trump and the Turtley McConnell and shows the world what they doing to the USA.

Mueller is our best hope at this point, with the continued efforts of journalists to expose the rot in the Trump & Co administration a close second. Because I don’t see anyone in this White House (or recently expelled from it) being a brave hero like James Holden or Marko Ramius are in fiction.

A good example of that here in Czech Republic is the Vietnamese expatriate community.

The vast majority of Czechs genuinely like the Vietnamese expats in their midst; they are a “model minority” according to most Czechs.

But the Czech are often nervous - if not outright hateful - towards other minorities (of course, the Roma).

The Vietnamese came here during the 1960s and 70s and they’ve stayed and prospered. But the Vietnamese are pretty much the only non-Caucasian or non-European minority that Czechs have any real and significant experience with; everyone else is, for them, an unknown quantity, and that fear of the unknown is what drives their xenophobia.

I distinctly remember people telling me in the late Sixties and early Seventies how computers would make everything easier.

So, this is quite a fascinating article. I recommend it.

The nightmare for Yoshiaki Kawata would start at midnight with a huge earthquake under the waters of Suruga Bay. Most people in the coastal cities of Fuji, Shizuoka and Hamamatsu in Japan’s Tokai region would be at home asleep as their homes begin to shake from tremors far stronger than those that struck the Tohoku region in 2011. Five minutes later, a 10m tsunami arrives.

“People in houses will be hurt by [the] shaking and then a tsunami coming,” says Mr Kawata, an earthquake expert and professor of safety science at Kansai University. Hundreds of thousands of people could die.

This is not an alarmist message from a university professor but the Japanese government’s official worst case scenario for a disaster it considers highly likely to occur within the next 30 years: an earthquake of between 8.0 and 9.0 magnitude in the tectonic plate boundary called the Nankai Trough. While the worst case is not the probable one, the government publicised the scenario in 2013, with Shinzo Abe, prime minister, calling on the Japanese people to be “calmly and appropriately afraid”.

Putting a Face (Mine) to the Risks Posed by GOP Games on Mueller Investigation

I’d like to put a human face — my own — to the risk posed by GOP gamesmanship on the Mueller investigation.

Sometime last year, I went to the FBI and provided information on a person whom I had come to believe had played a significant role in the Russian election attack on the US. Since that time, a number of public events have made it clear I was correct.

I never in my life imagined I would share information with the FBI, especially not on someone I had a journalistic relationship with. I did so for many reasons. Some, but not all, of the reasons are:

I believed he was doing serious harm to innocent people
I believed (others agreed) that reporting the story at that time would risk doing far more harm than good
I had concrete evidence he was lying to me and others, including but not limited to other journalists
I had reason to believe he was testing ways to tamper with my website
I believed that if the FBI otherwise came to understand what kind of information I had, their likely investigative steps would pose a risk to the privacy of my readers

To protect the investigation, I will not disclose this person’s true identity or the identity and/or role I believe he played in the attack. Nor will I disclose when I went to the FBI. I did so on my own, without subpoena; I did that in an effort to protect people who have spoken to me in confidence and other journalists. Largely because this effort involved a number of last minute trips to other cities, I spent around $6K of my own money traveling to meet with lawyers and for the meeting with the FBI.

Earlier this week, right-wing commentator Josh Bernstein appeared on “The NutriMedical Report Show,” a radio program hosted by nutritional supplement proprietor Dr. Bill Deagle, during which Deagle repeatedly threatened to kill anyone who dares to harass him, President Trump, or any other conservative politician in America.

Outraged about recent incidents such as White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders being asked to leave a restaurant, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi being confronted by protesters, and Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for more such confrontations, Deagle declared that “these people need to understand, they’re not going to have a bad day, they’re going to die.”

Deagle said that if he had been on hand during the confrontation between Bondi and protesters, he would not only have pepper sprayed the protesters but “would have whipped out my concealed carry permit gun and I would have blown them away and put them in a box.”

“They need to understand the right is not going to be shouted down,” he said. “[If] they continue to think they are going to harass the right, these people need to understand they’re not going to have a bad day, they’re going to die.”

After Bernstein declared that Waters “is an absolute psychopath” who is “just insane” and needs to be put in prison for inciting violence, Deagle returned to the Bondi incident in order to again assert that if anyone were to physically attack him, he would “haul out a weapon and I would blow him away, hit him in the center of the body to make sure he didn’t have time to go to the I.C.U. or have a trauma surgeon [save him], he’d be dead on the spot.’”

That statement from Thomas Jefferson about the tree of liberty being watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants?

Wingnuts love to quote it out of context (in the manner of overthrowing a tyrannical government). That is not what Jefferson was talking about.

The context is his statement came immediately after Shay’s Rebellion. His statement did not refer to tyranny, it referred to ignorance.

People assume that the price of a product represents its costs. When the whole point of modern capitalism is about maximizing profits by socializing as many downstream costs as possible.

Whenever people go on an anti-plastic rant, I just point out that it represents a major failing of our market and regulatory system: we allow the costs of disposal of plastic to be absorbed by the general public instead of being accounted for in the price.

Doing so most likely would have led to no end of creative and viably sustainable alternatives by now.

Instead we get specific laws on plastic products that are well-intentioned, sometimes effective but do not address the root problem.

Besides, how often does politics end up being a factor in math, science or foreign languages classes?

The idea that conservative students deserve poor grades because their reasoning abilities are flawed escapes poor Charlie, who displays those shortcomings daily on Twitter.

Jordan has denied ever being aware of the allegations, and now says he believes one of the alleged victims, Mike DiSabato, is “bullying him” with emails, according to CNN. DiSabato publicly accused Jordan of lying about being unaware of the abuse on Tuesday. A day later, a source within Jordan’s office told CNN that the Ohio Republican intends to get police involved after receiving numerous emails from DiSabato over the course of a few months. The emails were described as vaguely threatening, though no details were provided on their content.

The fact that it is a male sport, some of those abused may just keep it quiet forever. It might be the old suck it up and just live with it, it was all the past kind of thinking.

A lot of issues are more closely related than people recognize at first blush. That idea has been floating around in my mind as I contemplate Trump’s potential Supreme Court nominee.

This has real potential to be a moment of the conservative dog catching the abortion tire. How they end up justifying repealing an unenumerated constitutional right will have wide ranging implications. And whatever reasoning they use will immediately become the basis of hundreds of other challenges. The only way it doesn’t is if they rule that the right to due process exists at the moment of conception (thus outlawing abortion nationwide), and then that opens the door to all kinds of crazy laws. Perhaps they are all really nhillists now, and don’t fucking care, but the federalist society types I knew in law school would have thought long and hard about the ramifications. It’s a lot easier to complain about an issue or criticize reasoning on a decision when you can’t overturn it

Yeah, these people tend to just burrow in deeper and continue to do damage where it’s less visible. Look at Bolton, Ailes, Cheney and so on, they scurried around behind the scenes for decades. It’s who they are and what they do.
