And here’s the New York Times again, normalizing the white nationalist-linked group that supplies crime victims for Trump to exploit for ugly propaganda.

We just finished watching a fireworks show from our deck. It’s a couple miles away, but you can’t beat the convenience of stepping out the door to watch. This year it was enlivened by commentary from a group of turkeys in the neighborhood. They appeared concerned.

Can you purchase fireworks in Nebraska? I know Wyoming has more firework stands than Starbucks shops.

I don’t know if you can or not. There aren’t any fireworks stands in the Panhandle so probably not.

That said, Wyoming is not that far from here.

We got just short of 2” of rain today in South Austin. Any rain in July is a blessing.

A sub-tropical low pressure system pushed in from the east, skirting the south shore of the Gulf of Mexico. It dumped 5-8” of rain in Houston, shutting down the major E/W Interstate highway west of town. It pretty much shut down the fourth most populous city in the country and stopped a huge amount of material passing through the city for several hours.

We all have become accustomed to “Infrastructure Week” being a joke with this administration, but this is a perfect example of why it isn’t funny. This country needs significant upgrades to its infrastructure to keep it working smoothly.

It’s well past time to demand that the Feds step up to the plate and pay for the improvements in transportation infrastructure, flood control mitigation, and climate change defense for coastal communities that are desperately needed.

This is not rocket science. This is why major insurance companies or reinsurers will no longer offer coverage to any development, be it industrial, commercial, or residential, on the majority of land that is less than 15’ above sea level.

They are all about risk, and they know the risk. That land is gone in fifty years.

The rich have made it clear that they have NO interest in fixing our decaying infrastructure. Their Republican stooges want to privatize everything. But the rich are too greedy to part with their wealth to finance a privatization scheme. So we will continue to ignore the crumbling infrastructure and see our empire continue down the path to collapse.

True. I both hope and don’t hope Mueller has gone to the bottom of the rot. I mean, say our worst fears are realized and not only were US elections compromised, but most of a party (GOP) as well.
That would be tantamount to an act of war, and the US is not the only country that has had Uncle Vova and his Kremlin Crew interfere. To quote Adm. Josh Painter in Red October, “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”

On the Remembrance Project, the Nazi-curious group that feeds Tromp his surviving family members:

splcenter.org

Espinoza (the group’s leader) repeatedly uses a bogus statistic during her speeches, claiming that, “25 Americans or legal residents die each day at the hands of illegal aliens.” The origins of this come from Steve King, who since 2006 has claimed that “murderous illegal aliens” kill 12 U.S. citizens every day, while another 13 a day are left dead by “uninsured drunk driving illegals.”

Amongst other things, the group has reposted articles from Daily Stormer.

A number of people RP uses in their anti-immigrant campaigns have demanded RP stop using their images or names, and are considering suing.

I’m waiting for someone in the administration or within Trump’s circle of associates to blow the whistle loud and clear, someone who is willing to buck the chain of command and “do the right thing.” We see that in The Hunt for Red October, with Jack Ryan being an independent thinker despite being a desk-bound analyst and the sub commanders on Red October and Dallas trying to avoid nuclear annihilation. The recurring theme in The Expanse are mavericks like James Holden taking matters in their own hands to avoid the major political powers from fucking things up. Fictional and of course quite contrived to make dramatic stories, but that’s what our current real-life narrative needs: someone who defies the Mighty Trump and the Turtley McConnell and shows the world what they doing to the USA.

Mueller is our best hope at this point, with the continued efforts of journalists to expose the rot in the Trump & Co administration a close second. Because I don’t see anyone in this White House (or recently expelled from it) being a brave hero like James Holden or Marko Ramius are in fiction.

[Sidebar: Coincidentally, the political officer who is killed on Red October is named “Ivan Putin.”]

Since Hungary’s April election Orbán has moved to:
—Make giving info to asylum-seekers about their rights illegal
—Block all ways to legally seek asylum in Hungary
—Make homelessness illegal
—Limit freedom of assembly, with even whistling during an Orbán speech a jailable offense

Expect to see more of this populism spreading throughout Europe.

Keep in mind that Western Europe has been dealing with immigrant populations since the 60’s. They have not always been ideal examples of tolerance, assimilation or integration, but East Germany and the Eastern Bloc had almost no experience with foreigners outside of temporary guest workers from other communist countries or exchange students.

So it should be little wonder that xenophobic populist parties are well represented in this part of Europe.

A good example of that here in Czech Republic is the Vietnamese expatriate community.

The vast majority of Czechs genuinely like the Vietnamese expats in their midst; they are a “model minority” according to most Czechs.

But the Czech are often nervous - if not outright hateful - towards other minorities (of course, the Roma).

The Vietnamese came here during the 1960s and 70s and they’ve stayed and prospered. But the Vietnamese are pretty much the only non-Caucasian or non-European minority that Czechs have any real and significant experience with; everyone else is, for them, an unknown quantity, and that fear of the unknown is what drives their xenophobia.

I work as an editor, so there is that (it is quicker when using a word processor over a typewriter and mail).

As for airlines, I don’t really see a difference from the Seventies with preprinted baggage tags, when my baggage got sent to Los Angeles when I went to Brazil and it took a month to find it, or recently with computers when I went from Poland to Regina and my baggage went to Los Angeles, and it took a month to find it.

So, this is quite a fascinating article. I recommend it.

The nightmare for Yoshiaki Kawata would start at midnight with a huge earthquake under the waters of Suruga Bay. Most people in the coastal cities of Fuji, Shizuoka and Hamamatsu in Japan’s Tokai region would be at home asleep as their homes begin to shake from tremors far stronger than those that struck the Tohoku region in 2011. Five minutes later, a 10m tsunami arrives.

“People in houses will be hurt by [the] shaking and then a tsunami coming,” says Mr Kawata, an earthquake expert and professor of safety science at Kansai University. Hundreds of thousands of people could die.

This is not an alarmist message from a university professor but the Japanese government’s official worst case scenario for a disaster it considers highly likely to occur within the next 30 years: an earthquake of between 8.0 and 9.0 magnitude in the tectonic plate boundary called the Nankai Trough. While the worst case is not the probable one, the government publicised the scenario in 2013, with Shinzo Abe, prime minister, calling on the Japanese people to be “calmly and appropriately afraid”.

Sometime last year, I went to the FBI and provided information on a person whom I had come to believe had played a significant role in the Russian election attack on the US. Since that time, a number of public events have made it clear I was correct.

I never in my life imagined I would share information with the FBI, especially not on someone I had a journalistic relationship with. I did so for many reasons. Some, but not all, of the reasons are:

I believed he was doing serious harm to innocent people
I believed (others agreed) that reporting the story at that time would risk doing far more harm than good
I had concrete evidence he was lying to me and others, including but not limited to other journalists
I had reason to believe he was testing ways to tamper with my website
I believed that if the FBI otherwise came to understand what kind of information I had, their likely investigative steps would pose a risk to the privacy of my readers

To protect the investigation, I will not disclose this person’s true identity or the identity and/or role I believe he played in the attack. Nor will I disclose when I went to the FBI. I did so on my own, without subpoena; I did that in an effort to protect people who have spoken to me in confidence and other journalists. Largely because this effort involved a number of last minute trips to other cities, I spent around $6K of my own money traveling to meet with lawyers and for the meeting with the FBI.

So terribly Japanese. We Americans like to be wildly, massively and unnecessarily afraid.

Also, plan for the worst-case scenario and hope for the best. Better to be prepared for the worst than be caught flat-footed because of naive optimism.

The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins devoted his June 28 Washington Update to celebrating the fact that pro-choice Republicans have been nearly completely purged from the party.

“Endangered species are usually something we try to protect — but not when those endangered species are pro-abortion Republicans!” he wrote. “Over the past few years, the GOP has become a tough environment for Republicans who aren’t committed to advocating for the unborn. Now, with President Trump boldly leading the charge for life, most of the party’s more liberal members have seen the writing on the wall.”

Perkins cited a Politico story saying that, thanks to a couple of retirements, pro-choice Republicans in the House of Representatives “will finally be extinct.” He called anti-choice dominance of the GOP “the answer to decades of prayer,” adding, “So, many would argue, is the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy.”

Tony Perkins then goes on to say that this is hopeful for the rollback of LGBT rights.

Back on hobby horse: One reason #WhyTrumpWon was because a lot of us started to take the gains we have made in recent decades in personal freedoms, women’s, minority and LGBT rights for granted.

People really thought those rights were safe and unassailable even under Donald Trump and the GOP.

Here’s a guy who really likes the rights afforded in the Constitution:

rightwingwatch.org

Nothing like agitprop.

Earlier this week, right-wing commentator Josh Bernstein appeared on “The NutriMedical Report Show,” a radio program hosted by nutritional supplement proprietor Dr. Bill Deagle, during which Deagle repeatedly threatened to kill anyone who dares to harass him, President Trump, or any other conservative politician in America.

Outraged about recent incidents such as White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders being asked to leave a restaurant, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi being confronted by protesters, and Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for more such confrontations, Deagle declared that “these people need to understand, they’re not going to have a bad day, they’re going to die.”

Deagle said that if he had been on hand during the confrontation between Bondi and protesters, he would not only have pepper sprayed the protesters but “would have whipped out my concealed carry permit gun and I would have blown them away and put them in a box.”

“They need to understand the right is not going to be shouted down,” he said. “[If] they continue to think they are going to harass the right, these people need to understand they’re not going to have a bad day, they’re going to die.”

After Bernstein declared that Waters “is an absolute psychopath” who is “just insane” and needs to be put in prison for inciting violence, Deagle returned to the Bondi incident in order to again assert that if anyone were to physically attack him, he would “haul out a weapon and I would blow him away, hit him in the center of the body to make sure he didn’t have time to go to the I.C.U. or have a trauma surgeon [save him], he’d be dead on the spot.’”

Yup. Every generation must work to secure its rights. Rights can be taken in the metaphorical blink of an eye.

That statement from Thomas Jefferson about the tree of liberty being watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants?

Wingnuts love to quote it out of context (in the manner of overthrowing a tyrannical government). That is not what Jefferson was talking about.

The context is his statement came immediately after Shay’s Rebellion. His statement did not refer to tyranny, it referred to ignorance.

The full quote:

Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusets? And can history produce an instance of a rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it’s motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20. years without such a rebellion. The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure. Our Convention has been too much impressed by the insurrection of Massachusets: and in the spur of the moment they are setting up a kite to keep the hen yard in order. I hope in god this article will be rectified before the new constitution is accepted.

It works out to about $1.98 per gallon. There must be a serious glut of milk in the supply chain - it’s been this cheap for the last couple of months.

Super cheap in Germany (around $2.79 per gal), but again, there is the price of milk and then there is the cost of milk, a lot of those costs are covered by other mechanisms in the form of taxes and subsidies.

I would imagine there’s some pretty major dairy subsidies at play, at least here in Czech Republic.

People assume that the price of a product represents its costs. When the whole point of modern capitalism is about maximizing profits by socializing as many downstream costs as possible.

Whenever people go on an anti-plastic rant, I just point out that it represents a major failing of our market and regulatory system: we allow the costs of disposal of plastic to be absorbed by the general public instead of being accounted for in the price.

Doing so most likely would have led to no end of creative and viably sustainable alternatives by now.

Instead we get specific laws on plastic products that are well-intentioned, sometimes effective but do not address the root problem.

Strict rules are in place for the flight from Parliament Square Gardens, with the balloon being tethered to the ground and restricted from floating higher than 30m (98ft).

How did it take this long to come to the fore?

I don’t know if anyone posted this yesterday, but Jordan has run to the Capitol Police (or will, when he’s back from giving blowjobs to oligarchs) because that former wrestler is ‘bullying’ him with emails.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has reportedly decided to enlist the help of Capitol Hill police after receiving emails from a man who says he suffered sexual abuse during Jordan’s time as an assistant coach at Ohio State University. Several former wrestlers accused Jordan of turning a blind eye to the abuse during his time at the school, saying he had been informed directly of inappropriate touching by the team doctor. Jordan has denied ever being aware of the allegations, and now says he believes one of the alleged victims, Mike DiSabato, is “bullying him” with emails, according to CNN. DiSabato publicly accused Jordan of lying about being unaware of the abuse on Tuesday. A day later, a source within Jordan’s office told CNN that the Ohio Republican intends to get police involved after receiving numerous emails from DiSabato over the course of a few months. The emails were described as vaguely threatening, though no details were provided on their content.

Well, yeah, but I think his run-on was during a public address. I’d love for someone in the audience to stand up and ask, “Excuse me, but what the fuck do you mean … sir?”

Aside from his questionable mental abilities, I’m sure that Trump figures with his great brain he doesn’t need to prepare for his public appearances. He can just wing it, and his adoring fans will lap it up and ask for more. He has no incentive or motivation to prepare his remarks, and he doesn’t care anyway. It’s how he’s managed his personal and professional life since, I dunno, the age of 9, probably.

im running about 50 miles a week. that keeps me good and tired

I mean this is provably false.

I do not get it.

Think of Alex as cheap drugs bought off a sketchy dealer.

When you first hear of one of his predictions it is so outrageous you get that buzz. Just like the anticipation for that pound of cocaine you bought for $50 because the dealer has to move it fast, the cops are checking him out.

Then when the time comes and nothing happens from the big Jones build up, you are too embarrassed to admit you bought in.

Just like after you plug your nose up with the 2 pounds of caffeine and talc and never admit to anyone it wasn’t cocaine you bought for $50 a pound.

That is how Alex Jones goes on. The sad fact is most of his followers never get the buzz and never admit they never got the buzz, they just keep buying in because it is cheap anticipation.

It all sounds too good.

And if they’re right about what it means to be an American—which if we don’t win the election this year, they are—I don’t want to be one any longer. Which, admittedly, Trump’s de-naturalisation squad may take care of even though most of my great-grandparents were born here.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the disgusting variety of highly-polarized political discourse we have in this country, the “Trump sucks, but I support him because mean liberal critics…” routine does make sense - crap though it is. For all the “buyer’s remorse” legendry left-leaners love to try to promulgate online, it’s another thing entirely to get voters (or anybody really) to admit that they were deluded fools for voting for Trump - whatever their motivation - and the convenient “but critics!” dodge provides an easy out for these folks. Even if it is almost-certainly more common in the media (and on the ‘Net) than in reality.

But yeah, what exactly is “fair”/”unfair” criticism of Donald Trump as POTUS? Policy? Efficiency? Ethics? Credibility? Personality? Political skills? Trump comes up short in every category when argued on facts: pissy grumping about the tone of the critiques is about all his defenders have left.

Nationalism is not a bad thing in and of itself if it means being proud of your nation’s accomplishments and contributions to the world while also recognizing its mistakes and shortcomings. It is fine if it means being proud of your country but not at the cost of belittling or demeaning other nations.

In other words, nothing that passes for “nationalism” on the Right

It will probably depend on how credible (and/or documented) the allegations that Jordan observed abuse (and did nothing) are: that he ignored reports of it are bad enough: witnessing it is another matter entirely.

OSU wrestler Mike DiSabato is a very credible witness and (former?) friend to Jordan.

Jordan will have a very tough time making DiSabato look bad. If anything, he may have counted on his ‘friend’ to go along with the story.

The Nassar gymnastics abuse thing changed all of that.

THE Anti-Christ? No, though he is certainly anti-christian in everything he does and, honestly even more importantly, in the things he doesn’t do. Things done and things left undone are equally sinful. But in the end, the important thing for Trump is that the Pulpit Pimps will help him get and maintain power which is vital to him for 1) destroying everything the N***** president achieved and 2) keeping his boss in Moscow pleased.

Do you really want to salute a flag made in…CHINA?

As President Donald Trump levies tariffs and threats against China for “stealing American jobs,” a Chinese factory says it’s been hired to manufacture flags for Trump’s 2020 campaign, according to a Tuesday episode of NPR’s “Indicator” podcast.

Factory owner Li Jiang told NPR that his workers are producing hundreds of thousands of blue and white Trump flags similar to those they manufactured for his 2016 campaign. Per NPR, the Trump campaign ordered so many more flags than the Clinton campaign in 2016 that Chinese locals near the factory joked that they knew the outcome of the election before anyone.

Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., the committee organizing Trump’s reelect run, has publicly committed to buying American, saying that “we put America First and take great pride in selling 100% Made in the USA products to our supporters throughout the country.” It is unclear if the committee was the body that entered into the contract with the Chinese factory.

Jordan is on the hot seat now. There are people in Columbus’ power structure that would probably love to see him gone out of politics.

Yeah, was never a fan. Couldn’t watch his show when it was on MSNBC.
Held him in only marginally better esteem than I do Cenk Uygur. And, I’m not sure I would help Cenk up if he slipped on a banana peel in front of me.

Shultz was on whatever side would make him money. He was loud but not smart or informed, neither of which does anything for the cause.

I would take one Chris Hayes or Rachel Maddow over 100 Shultz’ because loud and stupid is the conservative way.

So you support capital punishment and think that poaching should be a capital crime—and apparently you support painful, torturorous death as an appropriate means of capital punishment. Okay, but what’s your argument for that?

Serious flaw in this logic: These people were not executed, they took a risk in order to make a profit and the outcome turned bad on them. That is not capital punishment, it is just business in its most primal form.

Have coaches from any other sports spoken up? (I knew a lot of peeps at OSU during that time period—need to look for some familiar names.)

Sorry, got busy.

No I have not heard of any other coaches saying anything.

As you know, OSU is so big that all the major sports have their own departments and facilities.

So things could probably be kept secret to those individual departments.

This broke in early April of this year. It would not surprise me if someone else comes forward and gives more details of what all happened. The fact that it is a male sport, some of those abused may just keep it quiet forever. It might be the old suck it up and just live with it, it was all the past kind of thinking.

Being killed by a lion because you illegally entered the lion’s habitat in an attempt to illegally kill an animal is closer to suicide than “capital punishment.” That was a stupid analogy you made, just admit it and move on.

@JohnRBowling
Replying to @JesusHCristos and @edroso
This is the same line of logic people use when they blame the way a woman dresses when she gets raped.

To apply comparative logic to a woman mode dressing and someone attempting to rape her would have the woman shredding the would be rapist. John’s attempt at “logic” makes the woman the killed poachers. The animals enacted retribution on their Rhino friend being hunted; the poachers were doing something illegal, not the lions.

It’s not about facts or logic. Trump claims he can win a trade war and it’s taken as an article of faith. They believe he can do it, despite all facts or evidence to the contrary.

There’s no amount of facts or statistics that will convince these true-believers otherwise.

That’s the problem. Trump knows that his marks will take him at his word even as he changes it regularly and for all his America First claptrap, he’s actively undermining US national security and economic dominance on a daily basis.

There’s no reason the GOP should continue following Trump, except that they believe him when he says (white) America First.

A lot of issues are more closely related than people recognize at first blush. That idea has been floating around in my mind as I contemplate Trump’s potential Supreme Court nominee.

This has real potential to be a moment of the conservative dog catching the abortion tire. How they end up justifying repealing an unenumerated constitutional right will have wide ranging implications. And whatever reasoning they use will immediately become the basis of hundreds of other challenges. The only way it doesn’t is if they rule that the right to due process exists at the moment of conception (thus outlawing abortion nationwide), and then that opens the door to all kinds of crazy laws. Perhaps they are all really nhillists now, and don’t fucking care, but the federalist society types I knew in law school would have thought long and hard about the ramifications. It’s a lot easier to complain about an issue or criticize reasoning on a decision when you can’t overturn it

This is a rather strange retort. So TRP “no longer” serves as the liaison? Which means they at one time did serve as liaison. That seems important.

It also isn’t clear why the NYT writer assumes the “liaison” role should be permanent to be valid. If having performed a liaison role, of making the introductions, so to speak, it would make sense for TRP to not be officially involved anymore. re: #384 Charles Johnson

On the subject of the NYT, the RudePundit was very entertaining on the subject of an earlier episode of NYT Trump-voter whispering. rudepundit.blogspot.com

In order to support President Donald Trump, you must be a racist. That is clearly a truth at this point, since Trump continues to do and say extravagantly racist shit. If you are still a Trumpster, it means you’re cool with racism. Ergo, you’re racist. Do we even need to argue about that anymore? (And if you’re a Trump supporter reading this and thinking, “Not me,” let me assure you: “Especially you.”)

If we take that as a truism, it is also a truism that most of Trump’s voters will do anything to avoid saying that it’s racism that drives them. They’ll come up with bullshit theories about working class anxiety or the desire for a leader who talks like them or whatever. Fuck all that. It’s the racism.

The latest example of this self-contortion is in today’s New York Times (motto: “One day we’ll get those two Trump voters in Kansas to subscribe”). It’s an opinion piece by Matthew Schmitz, who is the editor of First Things. Like me, you may have asked yourself, “The fuck is First Things?” And, if you’re like me, you google that shit and find out that it proclaims itself, “America’s Most Influential Journal of Religion and Public Life,” which is not unlike calling your dog, “America’s Cutest Little Wuggums That I Ever Snuggled.” In other words, it’s totally subjective and, really, who the fuck cares?

And what does the “most influenza kernel of rimjobs and pubic lice” have to say about, you know, stuff? Well, let’s see here. There’s this thing about making the United States a Christian nation, where you can read totally not fucking crazy things like “We hope for an America conformed to the reality that Jesus is Lord.” Or the multiple anti-abortion pieces where they are creaming in their Dockers at the idea of overturning Roe. They see their chance now and they are fresh out of fucks: “Now is not the time for compromise or worries about breaking the peace that Roe has brought us.” A bit uncivil for a religion journal, no?
