And Now, the Stunningly Corrupt Anti-Environment Head of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, “Resigns”

Announced on Twitter
Politics • Views: 38,995

The only question now is whether Trump is going to nominate this corrupt climate change-denying swamp dweller for the Supreme Court, or have Jeff Sessions “resign” and install Pruitt as Attorney General.

Because they always come back.

Andrew Wheeler is another corrupt functionary in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry, and a hard core climate change denier who used to work as a staffer for Sen. James Inhofe. So the destruction of the environment and plundering of America’s resources will continue unabated.

Good. I know Wheeler isn’t much better and Trump will try to bring Pruitt back in somehow but it’s a win and it has them on the defensive.

If Trump is doing this to set up Pruitt for a higher office, AG is more likely than SCOTUS justice.

I suspect Pruitt resigning throws a kink into the moving-him-to-AG-without-confirmation gambit. There are rather specific rules. It would have been better to keep him on board and then force Sessions to resign.

I’ve concluded that Trump thinks he can drag the US back to the early 1950s - races knowing their place, women knowing their place, heavy smokestack industries booming, etc. He wants to undo the global supply chains, international cooperation, etc.

He thinks if he drags US back there, the rest of the world has to follow. This is the basis of him offering Macron a sweetheart deal if France leaves the EU. But, you know, we’re not Frances biggest trading partner. That’s Germany. Put together all the EU countries, and the total dwarf trade with the US. Why would France fuck up relations with its biggest trading partners for the sake of #3 or 4?

I’m not sure how this works, but since Pruitt resigned, does this mean that he would have to be reconfirmed by the Senate to take over for Sessions, or can he still just be appointed without Senate approval? Depending on how this goes, I’m either optimistic or extremely pessimistic about what comes next.

lawhawk  Jul 5, 2018 • 1:10:54pm

Trump, who made his reality tv career out of firing people, couldn’t be bothered to fire an utterly shameless corrupt EPA chief.

He allowed him to resign (and one needs to look at whether that means he gets to benefit that way as well).

He didn’t fire Pruitt, which is why when Trump says he did an outstanding job, he means that he and the GOP absolutely approve of Pruitt trying to destroy/sabotage the EPA from within.

The GOP has sought to gut the enforcement capabilities and oversight of polluters for decades, and Pruitt has been the most successful of the GOP efforts on that front. They were backing his every move, even when Pruitt turned out to be a corrupt crony in every sense and picking up everything that wasn’t bolted down in the process.

Trump wants more like Pruitt in his admin because his goal isn’t to govern, but to destroy functioning government so that the GOP can enact another round of tax cuts for millionaires - claiming that failed agencies have no business getting funding, and who cares that air quality sucks, there’s lead in the water, and people are seeing lower life expectancies here due to the pollution spewed by the companies setting the policies.

Add in that trading between European countries was a great way to have stopped all the hate between the countries from the major wars of the 20th Century. Cooperation is much better than France and Germany hating on each other.

Also, I’m kind of wondering, is Trump trying to drive a wedge between Macron and Merkel?

It was a singularly unique moment in history - just as new powers gradually arose in the wake of the Late Bronze Age collapse or in the aftermath of the fall of the Western Roman Empire, so America reached its zenith in the wake of WWII, the most destructive war in human history.

I hope you’re right. The reason why I bring this up is from reading this article
nymag.com

See excerpt:

The straightest shot he has is by using something called the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. This 1998 law allows Trump to fill a vacated Cabinet position with any person who has been confirmed by the Senate for another position. So, if Sessions were to leave — how he leaves could matter a lot, but put that aside for the moment — Trump could install, say, Pruitt in his place, since the Senate already confirmed Pruitt for EPA administrator. And Pruitt could serve for up to 210 days without Senate confirmation — long enough to fire Mueller and all his staff, or at least seriously derail their work.

Damn near. Funny story - I was invited by an online friend to hunt with him in Montana, around Bozeman. One morning we stopped by a Burger King, and went through the Drive-Thru. When the voice came over the speaker, there was not a hint of an accent. After 3 decades plus in California, that was actually jarring!

Also reminds me of what a friend and I, both of us grew up in ultra-white areas, agreed is weird about going back - all the White People! It actually feels creepy that there are so few people who aren’t white! It feels good to get back to California after visiting.

Some of the service members say they were not told why they were being discharged. Others who pressed for answers said the Army informed them they’d been labeled as security risks because they have relatives abroad or because the Defense Department had not completed background checks on them.

Relatives living abroad is not a reason to call someone a security risk. If they were told that, it is a straight-up lie.

Honestly, it’s not like that. This is literally deprogramming a cult. Trump was oddly cognizant of this when he said he could go out and shoot somebody and they’d still love him for it. There is literally nothing that he can do that will dissuade those who want to believe. The only hope we have is to get enough of them to get him out of office peaceably.

I have a real hard time understanding today’s journalists. Did Journalism Schools drop the Class Journalism 101 - Society of Professional Journalist’s Code of Ethics?

For any Journalist to agree to stand in a cattle pen so they could be ridiculed by trump is certainly unprofessional. Do they actually expect trump to answer any questions from them? Or, do they expect to ask trump any questions? Hell no! The reason they’re there is to be trump’s foil.

Any Journalist could just stay in their A/C motel room and watch trump on faux news and get all the info they need. If they wanted “man on the street” interviews they could wait outside the event and find all the trumpsters they need.

The mainstream media has ways of dealing with reporting in countries where the ruling regime is fundamentally untrustworthy. They just need to take the fateful step of applying those same rules to their reporting on US politics, with special reference to Trump and the Republicans.

The main issue is that Trump or the like was an absolutely inevitable consequence of the prion disease of bigoted resentments that Republicans have been deliberately fostering in what passes for their minds for decades by consuming nothing but their own propaganda.

I wasn’t saying you could change the Trump base. The people I was talking about are the voters that took a flyer on Trump.

There is a percentage of people that voted for Trump that are not his crazy loyalists. I want them to be stripped away from his base so they don’t vote for him again. They are the ones to embarrass.

Then we need to get people on the left out to vote like they haven’t done in years.

I will never deny there is a too large group of people that buy into Trump.

They say tomorrow will be much hotter. LA area lizards proceeded accordingly.

forecast.weather.gov

Heat wave has begun, at least for inland areas today as strong
high pressure builds from the east and gradients start turning
offshore. Gradients are trending that direction and will continue
to do so through tonight and into Friday before trends reverse on
Saturday. Noticed a rare 40C contour at 950mb reaching the coastal
valleys south of Pt Conception Friday
and combined with offshore
gradients to the north and east those are the two major
contributing factors that will push temps to record levels
tomorrow. For this reason highs have been nudged upwards again a
couple more degrees, especially for coastal areas where it`s clear
now that the offshore component will easily push any maritime
influence well away from the beaches and allow that compressional
heating to reach the coast. Valleys still expected to reach 110 in
the warmer locations with highs up to 114 in the western San
Fernando Valley
.

It begins in earnest. From my WaPo email feed:

Trump administration poised to impose tariffs on China tonight, plunging two countries into costly and unpredictable trade war
U.S. officials will begin collecting tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese industrial goods as of 12:01 a.m. Friday. Chinese officials have said they will respond with equivalent action against a range of American goods, including pork, poultry, soybeans and corn, and President Trump last month vowed to hit an additional $200 billion in Chinese goods if Beijing did so.

The moves will mark a historic break with nearly a quarter-century of growing integration between the U.S. and Chinese economies.

Trump lies are getting more grandiose and bellicose. He’s goading at this point.

And he knows his base takes it as an article of faith.

The fact is that MS-13 is less than 1% of people considered to be gang members. Their numbers have been stable for nearly 20 years. Nearly all recruits are here in the US. They aren’t getting numbers from across the border and they aren’t a reason for border crossings.

In fact, border crossings overall are down to near multidecade lows. This was never a crisis until Trump created one by putting kids in cages.

MS-13 is the bogeyman, and even those in places hit by that gang violence know that what Trump says is a pack of lies. Even the law enforcement agencies in those places knows it is a lie.

Breaking up states is a GOP tactic—they’ve tried it a couple of times, but it’s so unprecedented it didn’t pass. Don’t set that precedent or they’ll split every red state into units of 70,000 population, each with two unearned electoral votes and two Senators.

Troll Farms and Russian Bots Are ‘Fixing’ Google (Wonkette, more at the link):

A campaign to influence the 2018 election is in full effect using a combination of Google trickery and Twitter bots, and it looks a lot like the 2016 Russian fuckery. The Daily Beast reports that since September 2017, an anonymous source has been paying bloggers in Indonesia and India to write a ton of nice stories about about people involved in Trump-Russia. The intent is to bury any bad stories about Trump, his kids, Felix Sater, former Russian trade minister Tevfik Arif, and Bayrock Group, the mob-owned real estate group used to launder dirty dollars into repatriated rubbles (and vice-versa).

The scheme is pretty simple: Write a bunch of blog posts for dummy websites. Because of the way Google’s algorithm works, the mass of junk will appear before something more reputable, like a WaPo report detailing how Bayrock was used as a transnational money laundering operation.

Think of it like looking for a needle in a haystack, except someone keeps pouring more and more hay on top of you.

No on California being three states. That’s just stupid. Too many people do business across county lines that would suddenly be state lines that would drive up the cost of business and needlessly complicate people’s lives. And that’s before you would have to figure out how to divide state agencies into parts for these new states to use.

I’m sorry, but it it’s barely in the realm of possibility.
Hollywood actress, documented in several places as supporting an upstart campaign with very low odds of winning photoshops a picture of herself during a campaign event even though there are other pictures of her at said event??

Well, I’ll put that idea back on the shelf then. It wasn’t mine to begin with, anyway.

The Great State of Arkansas, seldom singled out as an innovator in anything, was among the first states to impose work requirements for people receiving Medicaid, and tonight marks an exciting step in the effort to bone people who have made the poor choice to be poor while needing medical care: It’s the very first deadline for Medicaid recipients to document that they worked or volunteered 80 hours during June, or were otherwise exempt from the work requirement. And that documentation can only be submitted online, in a state with some of the lowest internet access in the country. And of the 11,000 people required to submit records tonight, a good 8,000 hadn’t yet done so as of late last week. Finally, a chance to whittle down the number of people dependent on public assistance — somewhere, Paul Ryan is beatifically smiling.

When the Democrats regain power, they need to play hardball to end white minority rule. Give DC and Puerto Rico statehood and break California into three states, add 2 seats to the Supreme Court, and expand the size of the House.

Breaking California into 3 states is an even worse idea than jettisoning a Democratic senator over a gag photo he posed for with a cheesecake model when he was a comedian

Minus breaking up California, I’m on board with that. Puerto Rico already voted for statehood. No territory which ever voted for statehood has been voted down in the past.

I believe the statehood vote last year was called into question because of an organized boycott by those opposed to statehood. There was only 23% turnout and statehood got 97% of the vote.

The 2012 vote is a better indicator, but also flawed. Just under two million people voted on two issues. First 54% voted that PR should not maintain it’s territorial status. On the second question of statehood/free association/independence, 61% chose statehood, but about a half million ballots were left blank. Now, it’s safe to assume that most of those blank ballots were people who voted to stay a territory, but it did complicate things and led to the 2017 referendum.

Cheechako  Jul 5, 2018 • 8:08:37pm

Adding seats to the Supreme Court only solves today’s problem. Adding seats will only temporary benefit the party in power. Once that party is kicked out what’s to prevent the succeeding party to add 2-3 more seats to favor their views. Pretty soon the Court will have 27 Justices (and look like Congress) and the same ‘ol problem of getting anything done continues.

What’s needed is a Congressional and Presidential approved process in filling vacancies. That process should include a firm time frame to fill a vacant seat and public vetting (including taxes, families, and review of prior decisions) of all candidates. The President could still nominate whoever he wants but the Congress would have a firm process and time frame for their “advise and consent”.

Choosing not to vote is still a choice. Too bad, if a person was opposed to statehood for Puerto Rico and didn’t vote, well, that’s their problem.

Should have added, the 2012 vote had 78% turnout, vs the 23% in 2017. And apparently the reason for the mass boycott was that the non-statehood parties believed the referendum was rigged by asserting positions that they do not hold as legally correct with respect to the status quo and free association.

It would have been such an un-Obama thing to do, but after the Senate refused to hold hearings on his SCOTUS nomination, it would have been delightfully ballsy if he’d declared that if the Senate declined to honor its “advise and consent” duties, he would consider Justice Garland seated.

The article notes that the highest population in Puerto Rico was in 2004, and has been falling ever since.

What they are arguing for is a way to replace population (they don’t mention jobs). It’s also a mighty convenient method of Jim Crow for refugees (put ‘em all in PR).
