Pomplamoose Rocks Hall and Oates: “Rich Girl”

So this’ll be our THIRD Hall & Oates cover this year! I’ve got such a mega crush on their song-writing…(Nataly here. It would be weird if Jack said that.) Also, the music videos are CLASSIC. Our friend, Caleb Parker has been mixing songs for the last few months, and I’m SO glad that he added in some tambourine. In case you’re like, “WHERE DID YOU HIDE THE TAMBOURINE PLAYER??!??!” In future videos we should just have someone standing off frame, and then suddenly pan to them when the tambourine comes in.

US-China trade war begins as Beijing vows to strike back with tariffs on US$34 billion worth of American goods

On Friday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said China will fight back against the US and report to the World Trade Organisation.

The remarks were in response to Washington’s decision to impose 25 per cent duties on a similar amount of Chinese imports, which also came into effect on Friday.

US President Donald Trump had threatened to target another US$400 billion in Chinese products with tariffs if Beijing continued to hit back.

On top of that, each country has prepared a second tariff list of goods worth about US$16 billion. The effective dates are pending as the office of the US trade representative is in the midst of a public comment period on its list.

The trade war became official after Trump repeatedly said he wanted to reverse the United States’ massive trade deficit with China, which rose to about US$375 billion last year. That number is US$100 billion higher than China’s own calculation.

Oh, yeah, that’d work out just fine.

Do the libertarians understand that riqueños have been leaving PR in droves for years? There’s no jobs there.

The article notes that the highest population in Puerto Rico was in 2004, and has been falling ever since.

What they are arguing for is a way to replace population (they don’t mention jobs). It’s also a mighty convenient method of Jim Crow for refugees (put ‘em all in PR).

Oh, I figured. It’s just that the immigrants would have no jobs, the PR government has no money to support them, PR is still recovering from Hurricane Maria, and not all Spanish-speaking people necessarily get along with one another.

Right. There is the faction that shirks it’s Constitutional duties in the name of destroying the government and, as you remind us, conserving power. And there is a faction of anti-globalist conservatives who are supplying his battery pack. He didn’t come up with this. Some folks are counseling him about this and repeatedly telling him things designed to get him to act like this - we have bad deals, every deal we have is bad, everybody is exploiting us, Obama made us weak, we give them protection and they do nothing for us. Yada yada…
This is also likely reinforced by the Kremlin relationship. He’s a dream target for those looking to groom someone for international chaos.

President Obama had a plan in his last couple years of office to re-open the rare earths mines in California, largely shuttered due to capitalist concerns (cheaper to get from China), for reasons of national security.

Last I heard that project to re-open them was on hold (because GOP).

The China tariff war will have Walmart up the proverbial creek unless, of course, they can transfer production to private prison labor in the US. That will take time though, with a huge influx of new incarcerations required.
In the meantime there will be mass layoffs of Walmart associates, and massive numbers needing public assistance.
Oh. Wait. Massive numbers of Walmart associates are already on public assistance.

In my E-mail tonight from the Veterans of Foreign Wars:

Do Not Let Congress Balance the Budget on the Backs of Retirees

Background: TRICARE enrollment fees and other cost shares were recently changed. As a result, military retirees who entered the military after January 1, 2018, will generally be required to pay more for TRICARE benefits than current military retirees. Military retirees were exempt from most increases in recognition that they have kept their end of the bargain. Now, Congress would like to change the terms of its deal with military retirees by removing that exemption and significantly increasing TRICARE costs for current retirees. The VFW needs your help in defeating this harmful proposal which would require military retirees to pay more for their earned health care.

Take Action: Contact your Senators and Representative to demand that they reject any proposal that would result in TRICARE fee increases for current beneficiaries, and tell them that they must not balance the budget on the backs of military retirees.

Amazing: In 2014 conservatives voters were convinced unaccompanied minors “didn’t exist,” now they are using those “non-existent” minors to justify this.

And Trump isn’t just grabbing unaccompanied minors. The maladministration is declaring anyone who comes with a minor to be suspect and possibly not related to them (parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, friends, &c) to justify taking children.

China has adjusted the dollar-yuan exchange rate to make the yuan cheaper against the dollar, which will help keep import prices (for US businesses) low, so China can keep its export economy humming. But that can’t last forever, especially if Trump keeps raising the ante. China has complained to the WTO, as I believe other countries have. Trump will be talking about this, if he isn’t already:
Ohio man wanted for kidnapping, assaulting girls captured under Lubbock bed

A wanted fugitive out of Ohio was captured Thursday, hiding under a bed at a residence in Lubbock, while two others are still on the loose.

According to a release from the Lubbock Police Department, at approximately 4:15 p.m., investigators with the U.S. Marshals Service along with Lubbock police and Texas Department of Public Safety task force officers arrested 28-year-old David Ramos Contreras in a home near 21st Street and Avenue P.

Contreras was wanted by the Bowling Green, Ohio Police on two counts of rape and two counts of kidnapping after two underage girls reported an incident to Bowling Green Police on June 28.

Contreras is being booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center and will be extradited to Ohio at a later

The perps need to be rounded up and stepped on, but this case has become a cause celebre in RW outlets because the suspects are foreign nationals with fraudulent documentation. It has even made its way across the pond to the Daily Fail:
Nationwide manhunt is underway for three ‘illegal immigrants’ who ‘kidnapped and raped two teenage sisters’ at an Ohio motel

Police are searching for David Contreras, 27, Juan Adiel, 19, and Arnulfo Ramos
Two girls, aged 13 and 14, said they were held against their will and assaulted
Simon Juan Thomas, 24, has already been arrested and charged in the incident
Authorities said all four men provided fraudulent paperwork for their status

Our own local “Florida Man” story …

Florida Man Arrested in Road Rage Shooting On Interstate 80 Near Kimball (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link):

SCOTTSBLUFF — A Florida man has been arrested following a road rage incident on Interstate 80 near Kimball Wednesday evening.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, the Nebraska State Patrol received a report of a man shooting from one vehicle into another on I-80 near mile marker 20, Cody Thomas, public relations director of the Nebraska State Patrol said in a press release.

The victims, driving westbound in a 2005 Chrysler minivan, reported that they had come upon the suspect vehicle, a 2000 Kia Rio, traveling at 45 miles per hour through a one-lane construction zone. The driver of the minivan honked and flashed its lights in an attempt to urge the suspect vehicle to drive faster.

When the construction zone ended and both lanes were open, the suspect vehicle stayed in the passing lane, traveling slowly. The minivan was attempting to pass in the right lane, when the passenger of the Kia Rio fired a single shot from a handgun into the minivan. The bullet went through the driver’s window and lodged in the dash. The driver of the minivan suffered minor injuries after being struck by bullet fragments and broken glass.

Howard Dean and his over-enthusiasm? I never saw what the big deal was with that, to be honest.

Let’s compare that to this nugget of brainmelt from the goddamn current President of the United States of America:

“I have broken more Elton John records, he seems to have a lot of records. And I, by the way, I don’t have a musical instrument. I don’t have a guitar or an organ. No organ. Elton has an organ. And lots of other people helping. No we’ve broken a lot of records. We’ve broken virtually every record. Because you know, look I only need this space. They need much more room. For basketball, for hockey and all of the sports, they need a lot of room. We don’t need it. We have people in that space. So we break all of these records. Appeals lawyers for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are seeking recordings of FBI interviews with a man killed by an agent who knew the convicted Boston Marathon bomber’s brother.

On Tuesday, attorneys filed a motion that would allow them to request recordings of Ibragim Todashev and his conversations with FBI agents in 2013 about his relationship with the deceased suspect in the bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Todashev, the FBI said, told agents in an interview in Orlando, Florida, a month after the April 2013 marathon bombings, that in 2011, he and Tamerlan Tsarnaev killed three men in Waltham, Massachusetts.

One thing that does worry me, despite ACW 2.0 being a washout:

If the USA is faced with a major natural and/or man-made disaster that disrupts services and local law enforcement over a large and/or populous area, we are likely to face scenes resembling Somalia with “militias” out in their SUVs “maintaining order” by shooting down everything they see as suspicious, and we know what qualifies for a call to police these days…

And when US National Guard or armed forces are called in to restore order and basic services, it is going to get really ugly in places.

And the Internets will melt down like they never have before.

That’s the thing, it could be a nice revenue source for municipalities, counties, states and federal, renting out space in comms and power infrastructure networks. The start could be as simple as instead of simply replacing poles etc. after a twister or storm roars by, bury utility tunnels and ducts with room to spare. Which has the added advantage of reducing cost next time a twister or storm strikes.

The American government has not dealt with Internet providers the same way they did with electrical and telephone providers. The attitude still seems to be that electricity and landline services are necessities, while mobile and Internet connectivity are frills. The deregulatory attitude in Washington since the days of Reagan has not helped, either.

Our municipality is getting a competing ISP - the village rented space to a wireless Internet operator for equipment on our water tower.

About a week after they installed their equipment it was destroyed by the May 10 tornado. They are in the process of replacing the equipment.

Perhaps when they get their service up and running our telephone company will lower their prices.

Good Morning,

Went to the fundraiser last night for Margaret Engebretson and was deeply impressed. She is a regular Navy, Navy Reserve & Air Guard vet, has worked as a union railroad employee and is currently a lawyer who specializes in Guardian Ad Litem work. Her positions in favor of Medicare was important to me as well as knowing that as a vet she’d work to help the VA do it’s job. Interestingly I was not the only hunter there and both of us understand hunting in the context of what is needed to for conservation in a world without enough natural predators.

Her campaign manager is a very responsive fellow and a professor of history at UW-Superior. It’s a small but dedicated group.

We have to move her past the primary and get her taking on Sean Duffy, vapid TV personality that he is, for the good of the 7th Congressional District. I don’t have much money but I’ve donated and plan to donate more on payday. I’m going to be spending my next few days off knocking on doors of likely primary voters here as well.

If anyone here would like to know more or even contribute, her web site is located at:

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area. We’ve got Trump’s trade war ramping up and the Chinese aren’t going to concede anything. They’re going to slap tariffs on billions of dollars of goods and American consumers will bear the brunt of this.

The only way to win a trade war is not to play.

And guess who isn’t playing in any trade wars: Russia.

They benefit from Trump’s economic and foreign policy at every turn. It’s uncanny. It’s so uncanny that it jumps from being a coincidence to a common theme on every single foreign policy and economic policy position Trump takes on the international stage.

Every single foreign policy move Trump takes undermines the US position, harms our alliances and strategic partnerships, and inures benefits to Russia who gets to expand their influence without lifting a finger (off the keyboards that have been furiously shifting the balance of media power in their favor for years).

About those job and wage gains:

In fact, last month, the BLS reported that year-over-year, from May 2017 through May 2018, average “real”—that is, inflation-adjusted—hourly wages for the largest cohort of U.S. workers fell by 0.1 percent. That cohort comprises “production and non-supervisory” workers, and it makes up about 80 percent of the privately employed U.S. workforce. The cohort’s average real hourly May-to-May wages fell from $22.62 to $22.59. While their wages rose 2.8 percent during that period, inflation went up 2.9 percent. Rising gasoline prices were a big part of that rise.

The only time NATO Article V was ever invoked was after 9/11 and it was the US who asked our allies to pitch in and help.

Which they did.

Now Trump thinks that this is a protection racket and the other allies are supposed to pay the US for that privilege.

That might be how he operates his real estate business, but that’s not how NATO works.

Morning.

I is 100% confused.

What the hell is going on???

Between that over-the-top rally of Trump’s last night and the trade wars kicking off today nothing makes sense at all. Especially when you see The Heritage Foundation concerned about Russia and Trade Wars. The Koch Brothers aren’t too fond of the trade policies either. And that was the Republican power and Trump ignores them too…WTF???

I guess one of the reasons the great Republican tax cuts gave so much money to the rich and their businesses is to tide them over in this war. You know, to cover any losses they may take while Trump fucks around.

The rest of us…??? I guess those that want can go get revved up by a Trump rally and feel better about Trump’s America.

Outside that…good luck in the wars.

Update on Jim Jordan and the Ohio State Wrestling Team Doctor Abuse.

It is now up to 5 former wrestlers saying Jordan knew. I’m thinking that just like the Larry Nassar Women’s gymnastics mess, this is just getting going and there will be more come forward steeled by the others stepping up.

Yesterday I linked a Daily Caller story the really went low on the two former wrestlers that have been the most outspoken by digging into all their issues to put them in bad light.

Here is a bit on the new 5th wrestler.

Dayton Daily News - Report: 5 former OSU wrestlers say Jordan aware of team doctor’s alleged sex abuse

Five former wrestlers, including former UFC world champion Mark Coleman, said this week that Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, was aware of but did not respond to allegations of sexual misconduct by an Ohio State University team doctor in the 1990s while the lawmaker was an assistant wrestling coach, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Jordan worked at the university from 1986-94, overlapping with Dr. Richard Strauss, who worked as team physician, student services doctor, faculty member and professor emeritus from 1978-98. OSU is investigating the doctor, who killed himself at age 67 in 2005.

Jordan denies allegations that he knew Strauss was a sexual predator but failed to report the alleged abuse.

I’m sure all these former wrestlers are lying about this just to bring Jordan down. Right???

NBC4i - Fourth OSU wrestler says Rep. Jim Jordan knew about sexual abuse

COLUMBUS (WCMH) - A fourth former Ohio State wrestler has come forward to contradict Rep. Jim Jordan’s claim that he had no idea the wrestling team doctor was allegedly molesting athletes.

NBC News reports Shawn Dailey claims he was groped a half dozen times by Dr. Richard Strauss in the mid-90s when now-congressman Jordan was the assistant wrestling coach. Dailey said he was too embarrassed to report the abuse directly to Jordan, but he said Jordan took part in conversations where Strauss; abuse of many other team members came up.

The university opened up an investigation in April after former Ohio State wrestler Mike DiSabato came forward will allegations against Strauss.

Rep. Jordan has denied any knowledge of the abuse.

Today, on Air Force One, President Trump said he believes Jordan one hundred percent.

“I don’t believe them at all,” Trump said of the allegations against Jordan. “I believe him. Jim Jordan is one of the most outstanding people I’ve met since I’ve been in Washington. I believe him 100 percent. No question in my mind. I believe Jim Jordan 100 percent. He’s an outstanding man.”

Trump’s always trying to scam someone. He tried to pull yet another one over on NYS tax officials, by claiming a real estate exemption when he hasn’t been a resident in NYS this past year (spending nearly all his time either at the WH, Bedminster NJ, or Mar a Lago in FL).

He tried to claim a $48,000 exemption he wasn’t entitled to.

And you wonder why he doesn’t want anyone to see his tax returns.

And every sports event seems to include some homage to veterans.

It started after the first Gulf War and seems to be a reaction (long overdue perhaps) of how we treated vets so poorly during/after Vietnam.

Thing is, we still treat vets poorly. We don’t provide sufficient health coverage upon separation, mental health treatment is suboptimal, and far too many with PTSD are untreated or end up homeless and we should be doing so much better.

Of course, the GOP treats them like disposable heroes - great for publicity and photo ops, but wont lift a finger or spend a dollar more on making sure they get proper care/treatment, let alone a roof over their heads.

I wonder if Trump’s increasing wild claims about “vote fraud” are a way of laying down a cover “story” to deal with an impending “blue wave” this November? This sucks. Elvis Costello cancels tour due to ‘aggressive cancer.’

‘The spirit has been more than willing but I have to now accept that it is going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength. Therefore, I must reluctantly cancel all the remaining engagements of this tour.

‘My apologies go to our ticket holders in Manchester, Pula, Graz, Vienna, Tysnes and Rattvik but I would rather disappoint our friends there by not appearing than in pressing on with a show that is compromised and eventually puts my health at risk.’

Costello, son of late jazz musician Ross MacManus, added that he had a new record planned for later in the year as he urged other men to see medical advice if they had any worrying symptoms.

Here’s hoping Declan has a fast and full recovery. The world would be less noisy and melodic without him.

1949. That’s when that song was written, 69 years ago. That’s where we were then and it’s still largely where we are now.

America is an ideal, not a demographic.

The Mexicans are overpopulating us? You live in Montana. Meanwhile those of us who live in densely populated states have no problem with our Hispanic neighbors.

Let’s again remind the assembled why Manafort is in jail while awaiting trial in the first place:

Manafort was engaged in witness tampering and witness intimidation to try and get witnesses to change their testimony so he could avoid a life sentence on those charges (he faces 100s of years in prison if convicted on all the charges).

But for his own actions, he would have still been out on bail.

He’s in solitary for his own protection, and to avoid further attempts at witness tampering. Again, he was out on bail but lost that right when he violated the terms of his bail.

The first tweet reminds me of a prediction I made months ago, back when Donny announced he’d be meeting Kim, that he’d find some way to spin the meeting as an “accomplishment” simply because no past president had met with a Kim in decades. Now we see the spin is to be “Kim wouldn’t meet with Obama!,” an argument so ridiculous that it only makes sense that Comrade Combover would utter it without comment from the media.

I got a call on Tuesday from my gastroenterologist’s office. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next Thursday. I am on the five year plan since polyps were found at my first colonoscopy. But there’s a $400 deductible, the office told me. “When do I need to pay it?” I asked. “At check-in.” I can do this, but this should be preventative care since I am at risk for colon cancer. I’m going to argue with United HealthCare about it.

ETA: Most Americans don’t have $400 lying around they can just plunk down for a necessary medical procedure.

Late last month, the club placed an ad on page C8 of the Palm Beach Post, crammed full of tiny print laying out the job experience requirements in classified ad shorthand. “3 mos recent & verifiable exp in fine dining/country club,” the ad said. “No tips.”

The ad gave no email address or phone number. “Apply by fax,” it said. The ad also provided a mailing address. It ran twice, then never again.
