It’s 105 degrees here in Mesa, Arizona. Our low overnight is 90. That’s lower that last night’s low, which was 93. We have these days, but it’s usually a month later, in August.

I’ve always found Nick Cave more interesting as a person than a musician. He’s not a singer, he’s a personality. This band is less a band than a Cave delivery device. No offense, but it’s pretty much unlistenable.

It was noted many years ago that conservatives apply shorthand bumper sticker terms to difficult problems, primarily to get their voters to vote the way they want. “Family values”, &c.

In 2011 a blogger suggested liberals could do the same, and essentially tag all of conservative ideology. He pointed out essentially the entirety of Movement Conservative can be summed up as “cheap labor conservatives.”

He’s pretty much right. If you look at every thing conservatism has done in our nation, it all points back to “cheap labor.” (You won’t deprogram everyone, but you might get a few, especially if they’re sitting on the fence from right-wing propaganda)

Defeat the Right in Three Minutes (goes to Conceptual Guerilla, more at the link):

It’s really that simple. First, you have to beat their ideology, which really isn’t that difficult. At bottom, conservatives believe in a social hierarchy of “haves” and “have nots” that I call “corporate feudalism”. They have taken this corrosive social vision and dressed it up with a “respectable” sounding ideology. That ideology is pure hogwash, and you can prove it.

But you have to do more than defeat the ideology. You have to defeat the “drum beat”. You have to defeat the “propaganda machine”, that brainwashes people with their slogans and catch-phrases. You’ve heard those slogans.”Less government”, “personal responsibility” and lots of flag waving. They are “shorthand” for an entire worldview, and the right has been pounding their slogans out into the public domain for getting on forty years.

So you need a really good slogan - a “counter-slogan” really, to “deprogram” the brainwashed. You need a “magic bullet” that quickly and efficiently destroys the effectiveness of their “drum beat”. You need your own “drum beat” that sums up the right’s position. Only your “drum beat” exposes the ugly reality of right-wing philosophy - the reality their slogans are meant to hide. Our slogan contains the governing concept that explains the entire right-wing agenda. That’s why it works. You can see it in every policy, and virtually all of Republican rhetoric. And it’s so easy to remember, and captures the essence of the Republican Right so well, we can pin it on them like a “scarlet letter”.

There was a poll out just this week showing that immigration and the economy are issues #1 & 2 with voters right now. And another poll showed that voters remained opposed to the wall and limits on legal immigration, the very lynchpin of Donny’s whole supposed strategy behind this insanity.

If I didn’t know better, I’d almost suspect the man of purposefully sabotaging his own party.

This seems not fine.

An unauthorized audio transmission over Chicago police radio frequencies Wednesday night seems to be a partial rebroadcast of an Adolf Hitler speech from a 1935 Nazi propaganda film, an expert said.

Based on numerous key words in the fragmented transmission, the audio seems to be from a Hitler speech in Leni Riefenstahl’s film, “Triumph of the Will,” said Imke Meyer, a professor of Germanic studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Black youth’s arrest at Philadelphia Zoo sparks argument between zoo security staffers (Goes to the Philadelphia Inquirer, more at the link.)

The zoo itself claims there were no legitimate sports teams out selling that day; the woman who posted the video and claimed that could not be located by the newspaper.

The video shows one of the zoo’s public safety officers, a black woman, shouting at another safety officer, a white woman who allegedly got Philadelphia police involved.

“This is what you did!” the black safety officer yelled at the white safety officer, as police held the youth face-down on the ground and tried to put him in handcuffs. “This is what you want. Is this what you want?”

“I only asked him to move!” the white safety officer shouted back. “I asked him to move.”

Raw Story: Fox News panel explodes into shouting match after Democratic strategist calls Carter Page a ‘useful idiot’ to his face

Democratic commentator Chris Hahn was talking to Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson about the probe on Friday night when [Carter] Page’s name came up.

Carlson introduced Page to tell his version of the story and ran into a buzzsaw when Hahn refused to back down as the former Trump adviser made excuses for passing documents to a Russian spy.

“This is complete spin,” Page said. “I was teaching a course at New York University called on Energy in the World, in spring semester 2013, and I had a coffee with a diplomat from the Russian consulate.”

“Who was a spy,” Hahn said. “He was a spy—you gave him documents that he requested from you. Which is what the [Main Intelligence Directorate] does, the [Main Intelligence Directorate] when it recruits a useful idiot.”

Much like espionage. You get your target to do something that seems innocuous. Give you a public document for example.

Having established that person will give you things, you start asking for more. If the target squawks, you can out the target (either as having talked to a foreign agent and not reporting it, or outing something about the target that person doesn’t want made public).

Very basic tool for developing sources who are not coöperative. (Coöperative ones you don’t need to work on so hard, of course.)

So, off topic, but I’m really digging this little microsystem I picked up yesterday in Orlová (a small town not far away from me):

I rigged up an old Samsung Galaxy III as an mp3 player through the auxiliary.

This old beastie has great sound, I have to say - and everything works. It dates from the mid to late 1980’s, made in Türkheim, (former) West Germany. Picked it up from a retired fellow who’s hobby these days is repairing/reconditioning old stereo systems. He has a room in his apartment packed to the ceiling with some serious old-school HiFi components.

Paid less than $40 and he even gave me a ride home, which was greatly appreciated; saved me from having to lug it home on the bus, LOL. I’ve told my Czech friends and acquaintances that if they’re looking for some quality HiFi equipment that won’t break the bank to give this guy a call.

So, Jim Jordan did an interview on Fox last night about the Ohio State wrestling team doctor abuse. His story is changing and he is trying to be subtle about it.

He is doing his usual bulldog bullshit calling everyone a liar and out to get him. For someone so tough and strong he sure plays the victim card.

From the linked article…

Think Progress - Jim Jordan attacks former wrestlers who say they were abused

- - CUT - -

Over the past week, Jordan has insisted he knew nothing about Strauss’ alleged sexual abuse. During Friday’s interview with Bret Baier, Jordan admitted he had heard some things among the team — but repeatedly downplayed these conversations as “locker room talk.”

“Conversations in a locker room are a lot different than people coming up and talking about abuse. No one ever reported any abuse to me,” he insisted.

When Baier pressed Jordan about why multiple former wrestlers are all saying the same thing — that Jordan knew about the abuse yet took no action — Jordan lashed out at the men, calling them liars and opportunists.

“I know they know what they’re saying is not accurate,” Jordan said.

- - CUT - -

Early in the week he knew nothing. And he said the former wrestlers were all lying. Now he admits he heard some locker room talk and the wrestlers are not accurate.

Hmmmm. Keep the pressure on him media. There is more to this story.

The head coach admits he knew what went on and that he and Jordan would never allow it. I find it interesting the head coach doesn’t separate himself from Jordan or clear him by saying Jordan’s account is right. There is something there.

Former head coach Russ Hellickson has gone quiet as far as speaking to the media. If he opens up it might not be good for Jordan.

God, these flaps are so predictable: every time some political figure (usually Republicans - funny thing, that //) gets involved in a horrific institutional-abuse case like this, their catalog of public responses seems to follow the same track every time:

1. I have no idea what you’re talking about
2. I have read these reports and still have no idea what you’re talking about
3. These reports are tragic and awful, but I have and have had no involvement with any of it.
4. I may have had some tangential involvement with some of it, but have done nothing wrong.
5. I haven’t done anything wrong, so why are you harassing me?
6. Stop trying to tar me with my involvement, and back off!!

There are a number of additional stages to the process, and I think this is, for now, about as far as the Jim Jordan case has gone, but if it is likely to follow the normal course of things, the final two episodes are:

N-1: I am resigning to spare my family the grief from this unconscionable harassment.
N. I am referring all questions to my attorney.

Some players added that even if the words “abuse” and “assault” were not used, which wasn’t uncommon for the time, Jordan certainly knew what was going on.

Dunyasha Yetts, another former wrestler, said that when he got injured, he asked Jordan to come see Strauss with him so he would not be groped. Jordan’s office has reportedly denied the allegation.

“Yeah, you can say we never told you those words because we didn’t know those words, which is true,” Yetts said in reference to framing the incidents in sexual assault terms. “But for him to say he didn’t know? I asked him to come in there with me!”

In contrast to Lizardo’s Monk and ‘Trane, here’s a very cool documentary about Detroit’s legendary rock band the MC5: MC5 - A True Testimonial.

It’s a 2002 documentary, a story told by the band’s then-surviving members (frontman Rob Tyner and guitarist ‘Sonic’ Smith had passed on by then). MC5 was one of those bands that bridged the gap between Detroit’s 60s R&B (think Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels) and the emerging hippie culture. They’re probably best known for their song ‘Kick Out The Jams.’

And the had a well-deserved rep as an absolutely devastating live act, with good reason. If you’re into a small but very influential corner of rock history, you’ll enjoy this. Well worth the two hours plus.

My six siblings and their spouses and children and Mom had their pentennial? (‘bout every five years) reunion in Maine (where none of them lives). I chose not to go after my mom asked my craziest sister to ask my sanest brother to ask me if I would like to join them. I told him that if she (Mom) can’t even bring herself to send me an email, or use just one go-between, then no, thanks. Now the emails on the group list that I still read, but never post to, are sharing photos, or were until the craziest sister made a comment about the fight (that I imagine she started, as usual) that apparently didn’t end when everybody went home.

It feels good to make the right call in a situation, rather than having a disappointed left-out feeling.

Science!!

An HIV vaccine that has the potential to protect people around the world from the virus has shown promising results.

The treatment, which aims to provide immunity against various strains of the virus, produced an anti-HIV immune system response in tests on 393 people, a study in the Lancet found.

___________________________________________________

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, scientists tested various combinations of the mosaic vaccine in people aged 18 to 50 who did not have HIV and were healthy.

The participants, from the US, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, and Thailand, received four vaccinations over the course of 48 weeks.

All of the vaccine combinations produced an anti-HIV immune system response and were found to be safe.

Scientists also carried out a parallel study where they gave rhesus monkeys the vaccine to protect them from getting simian-human immunodeficiency virus - a virus similar to HIV that infects monkeys.

The mosaic vaccine combination that showed the most promise in humans was found to protect 67% of the 72 monkeys from getting the disease.

“These results represent an important milestone,” said Dan Barouch, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the study.

However, Prof Barouch also cautioned that the findings needed to be interpreted with caution.

Though the vaccine triggered a response in the immune system of the people who took it, it is not clear if this would be enough to fight off the virus and prevent infection.

“The challenges in the development of an HIV vaccine are unprecedented, and the ability to induce HIV-specific immune responses does not necessarily indicate that a vaccine will protect humans from HIV infection,” he added.

Let’s not bust open the Moët just yet, of course, but I’d say this is certainly quite promising.

History lesson:

The KKK once had total domination in Indiana politics.

There was a time in the 1920s when being seen as a good, upstanding Hoosier meant joining the Ku Klux Klan.

At its peak, the Klan counted among its members the governor of Indiana, more than half of the state legislature and an estimated 30 percent of all native-born white men in the state. More than 250,000 Hoosiers swelled the Klan’s ranks - some because they believed in its anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic message, others because being on good terms with the Klan was necessary for their business or political aspirations - making it the largest Klan organization in the country.

“…the Russians refuse to admit that the Czech Republic belongs to the Western world and that it is so committed to reinforcing its democratic standards - which cannot but entail, in turn, a weakening of Russian influence.

For several years, the Czech counter-intelligence service (BIS) has been warning against the risks posed by Russia’s increasing “influence”. Its latest report says: “The economic sector or industrial groups under the influence of the Russian secret service may be used as a means of exerting political pressure.” Recently, a top-level BIS official told Respekt: “Over the past few years, we have found out that some Czech entrepreneurs known to be receiving suspicious sums of money from Russia have tried several times to take control of telecom companies, information systems and transport infrastructures - rail transport, airports, also airlines.”

FCC stands by decision to raise broadband prices on American Indians
FCC denies petition to restore $25 Lifeline subsidy for Tribal residents.
Jon Brodkin - 7/6/2018, 12:54 PM
Excerpt:

The Federal Communications Commission is refusing to reverse a decision that will take a broadband subsidy away from many American Indians.

Under Chairman Ajit Pai’s leadership, the FCC voted 3-2 in November 2017 to make it much harder for Tribal residents to obtain a $25-per-month Lifeline subsidy that reduces the cost of Internet or phone service. The changes could take effect as early as October 2018, depending on when they are approved by the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Sorry, poor people: The FCC is coming after your broadband plans

Small wireless carriers and Tribal organizations sued the FCC in the United States Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. They also filed a petition asking the FCC to stay its decision pending the outcome of the appeal.

But the FCC denied the stay petition in a decision released yesterday.

Definitely going to watch this later. Just read this New Yorker piece on George Clinton and MC5 gets a quick mention.

When I see the Russian players get a couple of steps in a foot-race for the ball on a Croatian my mind thinks: “they’re doping.” That’s the problem with Russia’s history of systematic doping and a lack of integrity in other sports (and that goes to FIFA, too)—you lose the benefit of the doubt across the board.

Beryl is among the smallest storms to ever be declared a hurricane. Because it is so small, it is easy steered around by the rest of the weather in the Atlantic. Currently, the storm has been pulled away from it’s source of energy (hot water, moist air) into a drier patch of air.

Hoomans and their magical thinking:

A Sign of the End Times? Another Blood Moon Appears in July

[…]

The news about the Blood Moon appearing at the end of the month has some Christians excited. They believe the Blood Moon is a direct sign from God and a biblical fulfillment of prophecy.

The Blood Moon is foretold by the Bible in the book of Joel 2:31, “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.”

[…]

Paul Begley is one pastor that stands by his belief that the Blood Moon is a biblical sign of the last days.

According to the UK’s Express Newspaper, in a recent online broadcast from Indiana, he said: “Just take a look at this. Look at this prophetic sign, look at the era we’re in, look at what the Bible says in Acts Chapter 2:16-21 and recognize the realization I am prophesying to you that the coming of the Lord is soon.”

“No I don’t believe it’s July 27,” Begley stated. “I repeat. July 27 is not the end of the world but prophetically the events that are taking place are being prophesied to you, not only from the world of the Lord, not only from the prophetic voices of today’s modern-day watchmen but also prophetically being revealed to you in the heavens above.”
