I had to go down to the pharmacy this morning to pick up the nasty, nasty liquid for my colonoscopy on Thursday. At least there was no copay for the nasty, nasty liquid. As it is, I’m out $400 for a deductible, which I find highly unreasonable. This is a preventative measure since polyps were found several years ago in my first colonoscopy. I shouldn’t have to shell out $400 for a preventative measure. I did think for a moment about cancelling, but then I remembered how a friend of mine who put off getting a colonoscopy had to have a colon resection and I was all, “So when do I have to pay?”

But this is the deal. I can at least say I have the money to pay the $400. I keep thinking about people who don’t have that kind of money. How many people are going without healthcare because they don’t have $400 to shell out—even with insurance?

I’m having to pay about the same for my mammogram and dexa scan this year. In previous years they have been no copay/deductible preventive screenings as part of the women’s wellness benefit of ACA (and good grief…the premiums should more than cover the expense).
Like you, I can afford to pay this year but lots of women can’t and many of them will die.

Donald Trump’s visit puts Britain’s Brexit dependence on show

Officials around May insist that Britain still has the capability to influence Trump, outlining a handling strategy that involves appealing to his self interest, “planting the seed” of an idea and allowing him time to consider its merits.

Said officials are fools.

Unless… they have copies of the video.

To be sure. The latest news is that they have rescued four boys so far, and are planning to resume operations after they charge up on air - probably early a.m US time tomorrow.

It’s a dangerous and complex process, but still better than the alternative plan, which I read was to wait til the end of the rainy season, so the water level would subside enough for them to walk out. The big problem is that the dry season is still a couple of months away …

So what’s the takeaway the Orange Anus expects us to draw from these figures? (Even allowing a generous definition of “harassment”) That the Iranians aren’t “harassing”our ships because of Trump’s tough-ass attitudes?

Or is a more likely explanation that US and Iranian naval forces have gotten their acts together and cooperated to avoid embarrassing incidents/incursions?

In other news that will probably be important but is overtaken completely by our current fascination with idiocracy:

Fearing climate change, experts warn that US nuclear industry faces collapse

The United States is on the verge of losing more than half of its low-carbon energy as the fight against climate change reaches a critical point - a reality the country hasn’t fully grappled with.

That’s according to findings recently published by researchers at UC San Diego, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The paper - “U.S. nuclear power: The vanishing low-carbon wedge” - paints a picture of an industry on the verge of collapse. Facing economic competition from cheap natural gas, a significant number of U.S. nuclear power plants could be retired in the coming years, the authors wrote.

[…]

The PNAS article:

US nuclear power: The vanishing low-carbon wedge

Nuclear power holds the potential to make a significant contribution to decarbonizing the US energy system. Whether it could do so in its current form is a critical question: Existing large light water reactors in the United States are under economic pressure from low natural gas prices, and some have already closed. Moreover, because of their great cost and complexity, it appears most unlikely that any new large plants will be built over the next several decades. While advanced reactor designs are sometimes held up as a potential solution to nuclear power’s challenges, our assessment of the advanced fission enterprise suggests that no US design will be commercialized before midcentury. That leaves factory-manufactured, light water small modular reactors (SMRs) as the only option that might be deployed at significant scale in the climate-critical period of the next several decades. We have systematically investigated how a domestic market could develop to support that industry over the next several decades and, in the absence of a dramatic change in the policy environment, have been unable to make a convincing case. Achieving deep decarbonization of the energy system will require a portfolio of every available technology and strategy we can muster. It should be a source of profound concern for all who care about climate change that, for entirely predictable and resolvable reasons, the United States appears set to virtually lose nuclear power, and thus a wedge of reliable and low-carbon energy, over the next few decades.

Part of me is skeptical - in an era when no one cares about proposing nuclear power, the industry latches onto climate change as its propaganda wedge.

OTOH, it is true that nuclear energy is less carbon intensive than coal or petroleum, as far as energy sources, and also fission may be for some latitudes the best choice for high-density electrical production.

Also note that if one wants to reduce carbon dioxide output then one has to change the way we create cement, and how we smelt large amounts of metals. Using nuclear energy for these things would help, though cement creation inherently generates CO2 as a by-product using the current chemical process.

“You unleash a string of insults laced with subtle enchantments at a creature you can see within range (60 ft). If the target can hear you (though it doesn’t have to understand), it must succeed on a wisdom throw or take 1d4 psychic damage and have disadvantage on its next attack roll.”

And, as you get higher up in levels, the amount of psychic damage the Bard dishes out increases.

A group of protesters confronted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Bardstown Road in Louisville Saturday, calling out “Abolish ICE,” before adding they know where he lives.

McConnell was out to lunch with Kentucky’s outgoing House Majority Floor Leader Jonathan Shell, who was upset in his May primary. Shell confirmed the two had lunch, calling the protesters “a small group of extremists.”

The interaction was captured on video and shared with Courier Journal.

In it, someone asks McConnell, “Where are the children? Where are the babies, Mitch?” — an apparent reference to the separation of children from families at the southern U.S. border.

“What are you doing to get the babies back?” someone asks in the clip.

McConnell, wearing a green shirt tucked into blue jeans, isn’t shown reacting or responding to the protesters. He walks past a sign for Bristol Bar & Grille, turns a corner and gets into a vehicle.

I was incorrect last night when I mentioned that I thought Stacey Dash was going to play a Supreme Court justice in the upcoming blockbuster (heh) about Roe v. Wade.

She is actually playing Mildred Jefferson, the first black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School.

Probably just as much of a stretch, but I had my casting wrong.

I must admit that, even though I have always preferred Runequest and Traveller, D&D5e is the best version yet of the 500 lb gorilla. It just does things like the Bard right ;) I also dearly love MacGyvering a LG~NG~CG thief (or rogue as they call it these days) because it drives Paladins nuts.

As I’m reading through them, I’m trying to imagine characters or people that match the various classes. Steven Universe is a Bard; John Constantine is a Cleric (you don’t have to have volunteered). It’s kind of fun to think about, and I think I’ll probably end up DM-ing anything I set up.

Good way to look at it. The Marvel (Cinematic) Universe maps up well, especially if you use alignments. They may well be derided by “serious” roleplayers (been there got over it) but as a shorthand of ethics they can be useful for a GM who knows how to play them. For example, is Steve Rogers LG or NG? Tony Stark CG or LN? It can be an interesting consideration since neither is evil but the way they work for good can be so very different from each other. Exploring that, especially with younger RPG’ers can be terribly interesting.

I’m reading the D&D Player’s Manual, hoping to play sometime in the future. In the class descriptions. The Bard, in particular, has a spell (a cantrip, which means it doesn’t cost anything to use) called Vicious Mockery, which is described as:

“You unleash a string of insults laced with subtle enchantments at a creature you can see within range (60 ft). If the target can hear you (though it doesn’t have to understand), it must succeed on a wisdom throw or take 1d4 psychic damage and have disadvantage on its next attack roll.”

And, as you get higher up in levels, the amount of psychic damage the Bard dishes out increases.

Any of y’all interested in gaming should keep an eye on the Bundle of Holding. They don’t tend to have D&D, but they have inexpensive bundles of lots of other RPGs for those times when you want to try other games…

Hey, when you’re telling a complex, nuanced story you pull out all the stops. They have allocated a whole month for their shooting schedule (although with all the people who have quit the production, it might take longer.)

As Nick Loeb walked to his car with a production assistant during a day of shooting his upcoming feature film, Roe v. Wade, outside Tulane University last week, a woman wearing a headset approached and asked: “Are you the director?”

“When I told her I was, she told me to go fuck myself,” Loeb recalls. “Then she threw her headset on the ground and walked off. I found out later she was our electrician.”

Even the director, also a woman, quit on the first day of shooting, so Loeb and Allyn are co-directing. They are also producers, and they co-wrote the script.

(Loeb is also starring—a multi-faceted talent, folks!!)

This is big for central Ohio Democrats/National Congressional seat.

The very conservative Ohio Republican paper, The Columbus Dispatch, endoreses a Democrat running for John Kasich’s one time congressional seat now being vacated by retiring Pat Tiberi…the Ohio 12th District. That has been a Republican seat, supported by the Dispatch since Kasich had it back in the late 80s.

There is a special election for this seat in August. I hope the Dispatch picks a winner…it would be a big seat turn for Democrats. Huge.

Link: Columbus Dispatch - Endorsement: For 12th District: Danny O’Connor favored for open seat

Here is what the Dispatch had to say in the first few paragraphs, a little on the Republican running Troy Balderson, and an interesting closing paragraph from a Republican/conservative paper:

A central Ohio congressional district that doesn’t get a lot of turnover is about to get a new representative in the first of two elections for the seat vacated in January by Rep. Pat Tiberi.

In a special election Aug. 7, voters will choose between state Sen. Troy Balderson, a Republican, and Franklin County Recorder Danny O’Connor, a Democrat, to fill the seat for the remainder of this year. In November, Balderson and O’Connor will square off again for a full two-year term beginning in January.

Voters will like some of what each has to offer, though each also has limited experience. We give the edge to O’Connor.

At 31, O’Connor is a year older than John Kasich was when elected to this seat in 1982. Now of Clintonville, he grew up in Sidney.

The rural community is conservative but his family’s influence to “do better” for others and his experience with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps between college at Wright State University and law school at Syracuse University pointed O’Connor toward Democratic politics. He worked for Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien, a Republican, though, before practicing family law in a small Columbus firm, Weis and O’Connor, and being elected recorder in 2016. He’s engaged to marry a Republican who calls herself a “Dannycrat.”

In the recorder’s office he reduced the time to file documents from weeks to days and enhanced free filing of military veterans’ discharge documents by connecting veterans with civilian job opportunities. He has proposed recording vital documents for the homeless and domestic violence victims to preserve access to important information for transient populations.

Balderson, 57, is a Zanesville native and a state legislator for nine years. His path to politics started under the hood of a truck he was fixing in his family’s motor sales business when the vehicle’s owner, then state Rep. Jim Aslanides, told him, “You should run for my seat.”

Until then, Balderson said he had “never thought about politics.” He was elected in 2008 and won re-election in 2010 with no opposition. In 2011 he went from representing two counties to nine with an appointment to the senate and kept the seat in 2012 elections. Redistricting that year meant major changes for his district, but he was re-elected without opposition in 2016.

It’s not unlike his past challenges, Balderson says, to now seek the congressional seat of his mentor, Tiberi. “Train to be uncomfortable” is the motto he likes to share.

Current views of the two men differentiate their approach to the open seat.

- - CUT - -

Balderson unabashedly supports President Donald Trump and declines to criticize other than to acknowledge not liking his tweets. He supports building Trump’s wall for border security, sees the tax cuts enacted this year as a “huge” positive and says, “I don’t have any heartache over his policy.”

A strong supporter of the Second Amendment, Balderson would not take guns even temporarily from licensed carriers in mental distress, although he calls for more mental-health services and would keep those who are mentally ill from acquiring guns in the first place.

On entitlements, Balderson did not support Ohio’s Medicaid expansion and would raise the age of eligibility for Medicare and Social Security. He favors repealing and replacing the federal health reform Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare, which he says has caused southeast Ohio to lose physicians. He would retain a requirement, though, for health insurance to cover pre-existing conditions.

- - CUT - -

But one supports a reasonable, thoughtful approach to addressing the important issues facing Congress and our country, and the other supports a president who uses tactics and pushes policies that this Editorial Board has denounced. Our endorsement goes to Danny O’Connor.

So, my church is having it’s tri-annual meeting this summer. It just started. My previous priest posted a bit about the proposed revision of our prayer book. That was… a mess last time around in the 70’s.

Most of you don’t care about this. That’s fine. For those who do, it’s behind the wall of sleep ;) But if you want to read my thoughts on this massively important (HAH! ) theological and liturgical controversy :) here you go!

First Trump came for the Muslims

Then he came for those seeking asylum

Now Trump is going after the gays and lesbians…

Why does President Donald Trump care about what gay people do in the bedroom?

The question came up this week, when a lawyer for Trump’s Department of Justice argued that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not protect LGBTQ Americans from being fired because of their sexual orientation—a complete reversal of the government’s position on such matters under previous presidents.

The Justice Department argument Tuesday, before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, came in the case of Donald Zarda who claims he was fired by his company, Altitude Express, for being gay.

I live-blogged here the day Cory died… of a heroin overdose.

I talked to a dude from Cincinnati in the lot on Friday, he told me he’s been to no less than a dozen funerals of friends who overdosed, then told me proudly that he was six years removed from heroin. It was heavy, I gave him a big hug. Dude was six years younger than me.

“…Ruíz-Nazario’s name appears on various court documents that allege troubling practices at the Shiloh Treatment Center south of Houston, including affidavits in class-action settlement motions in which children claim they were tackled and injected and forced to take pills identified as vitamins that made them dizzy and drowsy.

Many of the records specifically name Ruíz-Nazario as the doctor who prescribed the medication.

The treatment center is operated by one of at least a dozen government contractors with turbulent histories that house children detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

Theresa May’s approach to Brexit is what I’ve been calling “a little bit pregnant” scenario.

Her latest compromise was supposed to be to unify the Tory party.

But it seems there are trouble makers afoot.

Anyway, as I point out, one cannot just be a little bit pregnant.

For example: Brexiteers want borders to control the flow of people and goods, but Northern Ireland wants an open border without hindrance to the movement of people and goods.

How can one possibly get both?

You can’t.

May has been on borrowed time ever since she cut the deal with the Ulster Unionists. The government will fall and I would expect that a snap election would give Corbyn a minority government.
