Sean Carroll has started a new podcast, and his fourth guest is Anthony Pinn. Pinn is interesting not just because he’s another atheist who started out as a preacher, but his concern is the very religious African American community and various social issues:

Episode 4: Anthony Pinn on Humanism, Theology, and the Black Community

The GOP also put on display today that they have absolutely no hard evidence at all to support their “Deep State” BS. Much like Hillary’s marathon hearing, they decided that just throwing around large numbers (“thousands of texts!,” “pages of texts!,” “hours of work!,” etc) and harping on the same handful of texts to show “bias” was enough to make their case.

Her Twitter feed breaks my heart a lot and inspires me at times.
We saw the evil then and now it’s maddeningly more powerful. How the alt right treated these families was and is sickening. And FB was and is a willing cheerleader.

We can still try to do right by these folks tho. Local action and legislation will probably have to be the route for now. The latest Supreme Court nominee makes moving the needle on the federal side more unlikely.

OT:

Haven’t shared any poetry in awhile but I just wrote this little one and thought others might like it:

THE ROSE

In my garden sits a flower.
Just a solitary rose.
Why it grows there with no other.
Perhaps God only knows.

The winds have yet to take it down,
It survived the summer storms.
No animal has ripped it up,
It’s stands tall in perfect form.

The soil’s not so great there.
It’s somewhat hidden from the light.
Yet it stays there, calm and beautiful,
Through the day and night.

Not a single mark or blemish,
Not a petal out of place.
Rising up so strong and stoic,
Thing of beauty and of grace.

I’ve lost much in this garden,
And perhaps that’s how it goes,
But sure as the sun will rise again,
I still have my perfect rose.

This tiny, vibrant flower,
Best thing my garden ever grew.
I wonder: Was it put here
So I’d always think of you?

There was an interesting letter in Nature yesterday, one that just begs to be misunderstood, or misused:

Hominin occupation of the Chinese Loess Plateau since about 2.1 million years ago

Considerable attention has been paid to dating the earliest appearance of hominins outside Africa. The earliest skeletal and artefactual evidence for the genus Homo in Asia currently comes from Dmanisi, Georgia, and is dated to approximately 1.77-1.85 million years ago (Ma)1. Two incisors that may belong to Homo erectus come from Yuanmou, south China, and are dated to 1.7 Ma2; the next-oldest evidence is an H. erectus cranium from Lantian (Gongwangling)—which has recently been dated to 1.63 Ma3—and the earliest hominin fossils from the Sangiran dome in Java, which are dated to about 1.5-1.6 Ma4. Artefacts from Majuangou III5 and Shangshazui6 in the Nihewan basin, north China, have also been dated to 1.6-1.7 Ma. Here we report an Early Pleistocene and largely continuous artefact sequence from Shangchen, which is a newly discovered Palaeolithic locality of the southern Chinese Loess Plateau, near Gongwangling in Lantian county. The site contains 17 artefact layers that extend from palaeosol S15—dated to approximately 1.26 Ma—to loess L28, which we date to about 2.12 Ma. This discovery implies that hominins left Africa earlier than indicated by the evidence from Dmanisi.

There have been some news articles, some better than others. E.g.:

Oldest Stone Tools Outside Africa Unearthed in China

I have issues with that take, but it tries. Science Magazine’s Ann Gibbons also writes a story about it, but again I take issue with her approach (as I seem to do more and more, as I think she does not use precise enough language in her articles):

And for the abuse part: Just read the comments to the Japanese Times (always a bit dodgy of a website anyway) publication of the AP article (whose title is actually a bit more accurate than most, by using the phrase “human kin”):

Stone tools 2.1 million years old unearthed in China suggest human kin left Africa earlier than thought

The comments is full of creationists and racists. (Always the racists it seems in these comments.)

Put simply: The Hominini clearly included quite a number of species. Not all of them contributed to us. There is no way to tell if the tools discovered in China have a connection to any species which contributed to us. It seems likely that all great apes that are in our lineage from the most recent common ancestors with the genus Pan were tool users of some sort, from the most crude of tools to stone shaping, so any tool discovered may not be from one of our direct ancestors.

So the jackpot will be a bit over half-way (because they are $2 tickets) to being large enough to make sense to buy a ticket.

That’s how he is with everything. He doesn’t know shit about Brexit or anything. The dumbass went to where Brexit was least popular and hailed its success. He’s a fucking dumbass and I regret that I don’t have the way with adjectives that the Scots do.

According to the State of California:

I buy a ticket if the jackpot goes over $400 million. It ALMOST makes sense.

Because there are secondary prizes, the expected return on a ticket will surpass the price of a ticket before the jackpot hits $604M. I’ve not figured out the actual turnover point, but I suspect it’s a bit over $500M.

Saw a cool sign at the restaurant I ate on the way home from my eye doctor appointment tonight. The bathroom sign was a combination of the traditional male/female sign with “Whichever” written. Great food and ambiance too. I got the Chicken curry. Really nice people too. They have a great beer and wine selection as well. And they have music on Saturdays and they’re going to open up an ice cream shop nearby too.

Figuring out the cost/benefit ratio would be beyond my skills (Stat 2 was a long time ago, and didn’t cover anything that advanced anyway), but I figured that $400M wasn’t completely silly. When the ticket costs $1, I wait until $40M on the same principle.

This is someone who seriously talked about our economy as if we were in the Great Depression and now thinks we’re in the most prosperous time ever. He’s not even really lying. I think he is that delusional. His advisers meanwhile are too chicken shit to tell him the truth. And his cult? Well they believe everything he says.

She seems like good people. Did ya see Gerry Connolly’s awesome take down of the hypocrites? I’ve met Gerry before. For the longest time, he was the “other” Boston Irish Catholic in the NOVA delegation, now he’s the most senior member!

Honestly, if HRC is angry, I don’t blame her. Everything she said about Trump was true. And so many of us even on the left scoffed at it. You know who didn’t get why Trump was a danger? Fucking Bernie.

This would be my congressman. I went (again) and left a comment on his Facebook:

Deana Holmes Deana has a badge showing that they are a constituent of Andy Biggs It’s being reported that you spent your entire five minutes blasting Strzok and he wasn’t allowed to respond. You know, that’s just jackass behavior, Congressman. You need to come home and explain why you’re such a jerk to us, your constituents.

This guy has never held an open town hall. He sneaks around to evangelical churches and holds impromptu secret town halls. I’m doubly offended—first that he’s sneaking around to evangelical churches, and second, he’s Mormon and evangelicals think Mormons are non-Christian cultists. Making common cause with people who think you’re going to hell is disgusting.
