Remember When Donald Trump Asked Russia to Hack Hillary Clinton? They Did What He Asked.

Politics • Views: 36,487

Three days before our so-called president is scheduled to meet Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, special prosecutor Robert Mueller has indicted 12 Russian officials for 2016 election hacking.

And the indictment reveals that during the campaign, when Trump infamously asked Russia to hack into Hillary Clinton’s emails, they responded right away by changing their targets and aggressively trying to do what Trump asked.

Trump said, “Russia, if you’re listening…”

They were.

YouTube

The 12, who are members of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, are accused of stealing usernames and passwords of volunteers in Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign, including its chairman John Podesta. They also allegedly hacked into the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in an operation starting around March 2016.

The charges include conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S., aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to launder money. They are accused of releasing the stolen emails on the web.

[…]

The indictment said the Russians shifted their hacking tactics “on or about July 27, 2016” to target a domain hosted by a provider used by Clinton’s personal office and 76 email addresses at the Clinton campaign’s Internet domain. That was the same day that Trump urged the Russians “to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.”

All we need is the info going from Russia to the Trump camp.

lawhawk  Jul 13, 2018 • 11:50:47am

They had been trying to hack Clinton and DNC related accounts for months before that, but redoubled their efforts the moment Trump uttered that infamous line.

But these indictments also point at a direct link between the Russian agents and Trump campaign - that someone was in direct contact.

My guess on that is Stone.

There’s also a tangential link to some member of Congress. That’s unleashed quite a bit of speculation, and there are way too many possibilities for anyone to be comfortable with.

That’s how compromised the GOP is at this point. There are those who enabled Trumpworld criminality and those who are criminals along with Trumpworld, and it’s increasingly tough to separate the two without a playbook.

Thankfully, Mueller’s doing that with his targeted indictments that are meant to highlight specific parts of the ongoing conspiracy to undermine the US and its elections by Russia. And they also point directly at Trump as not only a beneficiary of those Russian efforts, but the contacts also suggest conspiracy against the US (violating federal election law, throwing the election, taking illegal info, financial crimes, etc. also come into play).

re: #25 JordanRules

well, I hope that this removes any “lingering doubts” about the collusion charges. What is buried in the release is the statement that the hacking can be tied to a GOP Congressional campaign. Think about this for a bit. Not only were the Russians aiding trump and siphoning off funds marked for Dem candidates, they were actively using hacked data to assist in the campaign strategy of GOP congressional candidates.

So not only do we see Russia assisting Trump, but the GOP as a whole. Someone had to direct their efforts to determine which campaigns could be helped with the social media attacks and I think this implies that the assistance was a coordinated campaign, not just for Trump, but for the GOP as a whole, which explains a whole lotta shitty behavior from Ryan and McConnell, they were paying off the political invoices with regards to changes in American policy. Essentially aligning with white nationalist Russia as the adoption of the GOP platform, some spoken aloud, others practiced in deed rather than promoted.

Also indicates that there were more willing accomplices outside of Faux/Sinclair empires (obviously some within the NYT) to push these narratives and keep them in the forefront regardless of there not being anything actually fucking there because the entire story was that they had been hacked, the contents showed essentially jack shit, but couldn’t let that interrupt the narrative….

And…

While the yam:

…lobbed praise at first responders and other federal officials.Everything was going great, he said. This was not a real catastrophe like Hurricane Katrina, he reassured the public, and any reports to the contrary were nothing but fake news

and

The White House even put out a propaganda video to prove how swell everything was supposedly going. Its first screen, showing government choppers to the rescue, accompanied by dramatic music, featured these words: “What the Fake News Media Will Not Show You in Puerto Rico.” “Because of #FakeNews my people are not getting the credit they deserve for doing a great job,” Trump tweeted.

In actuality:

The early media reporting in Puerto Rico should have served as a crucial alert.

But it was branded fake. Worse than being ignored, it was kissed off as wrong.

That was dangerous, and probably deadly. The FEMA report — though its details are stunning — tells us largely what we already knew: that the federal response to Maria was sorely lacking.

Given all the good news about employment, the Dow is back over 25,000 today. If you’re puzzled, remember that while the tariffs will hurt certain sectors like soybean farmers, but are a drop in the bucket compared to the $20 trillion US economy. It could become a long term drag on global growth, however, if Trump brings about a breakdown in the world trading order and high protective tariffs become the norm again.

Indeed. This administration’s stock in trade has been, in Bannon’s words, to ‘flood the zone.’ They’ve piled bullshit upon lies upon illegality upon corruption in hopes that people wouldn’t be able to keep up with it all.

When Mueller’s findings are finally made public, he should turn Trump’s own tactic on him - and make so much public that the administration won’t know which charge to try and knock down first.

I hope for mass embolisms when they finally realize they didn’t outrun the law like they expected to.

Not to be dark, but consider that elsewhere in the world social media rumors and conspiracy theories are causing lynch mobs and murders.

Take everything dangerous about moral panic and group hysteria and make it go faster and sharpen its ability to designate targets. That’s where we are. Social media is the perfect mix of human intelligence gathering system and propaganda dissemination system.

Of course Facebook isn’t going to cut anything. Their profit model involves engagement…clicks…who most desperately wants to flood social systems with disinformation? Their profit model involves harvesting data to create more and more detailed human intelligence profiles and selling that information…who can harvest the most benefit from that?

The answer is not “toothpaste brands.”

I wonder if there might be a fake “tracer” informant name/info in all of this data to see if somehow that name or info gets shared with Putin and comes out later somehow. It would be a tell that Trump or someone close to him is in direct contact with all of this.

The US intelligence community must be running at least this level of counterintelligence operation vs. the Trump White House and Congressional Republicans, because the IC is not profoundly incompetent.

Greenwald’s ever-more-strained defense of the indefensible position reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Lisa’s vegetarianism drives her to disrupt Homer’s pig roast with a lawn tractor. The whole roast pig rolls away into the dirt. Homer says,

“It’s just a little dirty. It’s still good!”

Then it falls in the river…

“It’s just a little slimy. It’s still good!”

Then it gets blown out of the spillway of the dam at high velocity…

“It’s just a little airborne. It’s still good!”

And what, even is the likelihood that all House Republicans would go along with the idea (I’m assuming unanimous Democratic opposition) - even a bare majority? In an election year?

And while I realize that, under the Constitution, Congress need not necessarily have a particular reason to impeach government officials (though one is usually come up with), how many more GOP Reps. are going to want to have to face the voters in November with a blatantly political hitjob - never mind the coverup of criminality - like a Rosenstein impeachment on their records??

The fix on voter fraud is in. There is no way Republicans works be doing what they are doing of it wasn’t. All that Blue Wave stuff is not when the foreign advisory has vote rolls, access to systems, a Republican just took the top job at the e-voting machine company, etc. etc. etc.

Old Liberal  Jul 13, 2018 • 3:40:08pm

Remember how “Occupy” spread? Started in one city, was picked up in another and another and another. With Democrats in the more compact cities, I wish someone would start a “Sunday Night Walk of Protest”. Nothing organized, no speakers, no permits. Just concerned citizens going out into the summer streets, meeting their neighbors, carrying signs, encouraging each other. You can start it with two dozen people. Growing every week, inviting your neighbors, friends to join all of you, eventually thousands coming out every Sunday night to protest. Protest police brutality, protest Russia, protest racism, protest immigration, protest it all. Make it social, make it fun. There is nothing wrong with the mega-marches, and the across-the-nation marches, but the media doesn’t cover it, it lasts one day, it is expensive, people can’t participate. Walking every Sunday night, getting people registered, camaraderie, come if you can, if you can’t there’s always next week. Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin, Houston, it can be everywhere. If this was growing, every week, across the country, it could explode into the national strikes we need.

I think there will eventually be thousands of indictments, reaching into every rotten corner of corrupt America. Some of it will reach back to the Cold War.

What happens if they impeach Rosenstein, install the guy they just pushed thorough, and can Mueller?

Nobody Is Above the Law—Mueller Firing Rapid Response

Donald Trump could be preparing to put himself above the law. We won’t allow it.

Trump will create a constitutional crisis if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller, or attempts to compromise the investigation by other means. (See The Plan for details.)

Our response in the hours following a potential power grab will dictate what happens next—whether Congress will stand up to Trump or allow him to move our democracy toward authoritarianism.

That’s why we’re preparing to hold emergency “Nobody Is Above the Law” rallies around the country, in the event they are needed—900+ of them and counting, in every state, with 350,000 RSVPs to date!

Join us.

First time I heard it was during Bob Dole’s run against Clinton in ‘96. Odd that Dole and Brooks are both still alive, being so in front of America in politics and entertainment for so long. Old, fragile nonagenerians now. Dole is 94, Brooks is 92.

I’ve noticed that RWNJ propaganda is going out of its way to characterize protest as “violent,” as though blocking the street or giving some tool the finger in a restaurant is equivalent to mass murder. I am seeing this especially from NRA oriented tools, including Birchers and Sean Hannity. They have a real hardon to get the gunplay started. It won’t come to that, but their American tools and agents do need to be severely punished, partly so Russians and any potential assets elsewhere will see that the Russians cannot, or will not, protect their operatives. If Russian instigation results in large scale violence in this country, the response must be especially severe. Complicit organizations must be disbanded and their assets confiscated. More fundamentally, the cultural and socio-economic factors that made large scale subversion possible must be addressed. At the very least, the Fairness Doctrine should be re-instituted and, beyond a small exemption, religious organizations must lose their tax exempt status.

re: #4 lawhawk

And they also point directly at Trump as not only a beneficiary of those Russian efforts, but the contacts also suggest conspiracy against the US (violating federal election law, throwing the election, taking illegal info, financial crimes, etc. also come into play).

i rather hope this ends up like one of those old English garden-party mysteries, where Mueller has a long conversation with Trump in the Oval Office, laying out the case for treason, and then, at the end, lays a gun down on the desk. “Oh look, sir. A Colt .38 has just appeared on your desk, loaded, I dare say, with a single bullet. An honorable man, seeking to prevent the enormous scandal that would engulf his family, would know how to put that bullet to good use. Let me exit the room for…shall we say 5 minutes?”

Fundamentally, how do you forcibly deprogram a rabid cult with tens of millions of members?

This is the real problem :/ Unless it can be proven that Russia changed vote totals, the fact remains that they couldn’t have influenced the election results without plenty of assists from within - all the nasty propaganda seeds they planted wouldn’t have taken root without the fertile, fetid soil of fox-infested American minds (there were domestic propaganda bots too, funded by the Mercers).

Even the most serious allegation leveled thus far - that Russia might have knocked people off voter rolls - wouldn’t have been enough to tip the scales were it not for fundamental problems that already existed in the US.

What happens if they impeach Rosenstein, install the guy they just pushed thorough, and can Mueller?

They cannot convict because that requires 2/3rd vote from the Senate, which they definitely do not have. Whether they can even succeed in impeaching is another question; that is certainly possible because as far as I can tell every House Republican is a traitor and only a simple majority is required for impeachment.

The argument that Mueller should have delayed the indictments so as not to embarrass Trump as he prepared to meet with Putin with no witnesses present is an interesting one for White House officials to make.

Maybe going to Russia at all in the middle of this investigation was a horrible idea and they should just be mad at themselves and Trump for creating the opportunity for such terrible optics.

No, there’s been so much changed, so much damage done, that the revelation that Trump won through foreign interference would pretty much upend our entire political system. I still feel, as I always have, that we are sloowwwly inching closer to the revelation that some vote totals were ratfcked.

or registries were hacked, forcing people to cast provisional (often uncounted) votes

20 people are talking about this

I’d bet it effected more than the Presidential race too.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Russians purged voters from databases and, in many cases, these potential voters probably did not even cast provisional ballots. We will never know whether this affected the outcome of the Presidential race. But a friend from Ann Arbor mentioned recently that there were thousands of Michigan ballots that did not have a vote for President. If so, that might indicate that the vote itself was directly affected.

I think so too. Meddling in state and local elections would be much easier to pull off and harder to detect. It would also allow them to buy major influence without a potentially messy money trail. In fact, much of the payoff to the tools, to media and politicals both, may not be in monetary form at all.

Exactly. This feels like a more likely kompromat angle too.

I know where the QAnon nonsense comes from.

Driving to Edmonton from Saskatoon, my wife and I were listening to CBC Radio 1.

They have a programme about entertainers and other fluff pieces called “Q”

That must be the source.

re: #319 Targetpractice

If we’d had the declaration last year, we might have been able to just treat ‘16 as a wash and perform a “re-do” or something like that. But nearly 2 years hence? No, there’s been so much changed, so much damage done, that the revelation that Trump won through foreign interference would pretty much upend our entire political system. We’d be just this side of a failed state in the eyes of many nations.

There is no mechanism in the Constitution for a “re-do.” The only two mechanism in the Constitution for an official who has failed his or her oath is a) impeachment or b) vote the bum out.

re: #342 Cheechako

We’re still working our way in your direction (we’re in Edmonton tonight).

In the meantime, my house in Nebraska was damaged in a storm; the electric meter and circuit breaker panel were pulled out of the wall (lovely).

The power company shut off power to my house yesterday; today my neighbours went over to empty the refrigerator. The roofing company came to replace my torndao-damaged roof.

Can we stay with you? It seems safer. /s

We’re headed to Fort St. John, British Columbia tomorrow.
