It’s stunning what these conservatives are ready and eager to say about arming 3-year old children. They DIDN’T EVEN SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS IDEA.

Matt Gaetz is the only one who seems to understand there’s something weird going on, and I never thought I’d see Gaetz come out as the smart one.

I watched the 30 minute preview last night.

I would consider myself a bit of a fan of SBC. I loved Borat, his other movie vehicles far less so.

I also love watching stupid people like Joe Walsh and Sarah Palin appear extremely foolish. I love that they and David Frum are outraged.

Having said that, I didn’t enjoy what I saw very much. Maybe I am “over” the SBC formula, especially with sub-par characters and disguises. Maybe in these awful times I am just not as prepared to laugh at the fact that he has no problem finding right wingers who want to arm toddlers.

At any rate, I think 30 minutes was enough for me.

They’ve consumed too much NRA propaganda and have been made to believe that with proper and rigorous instruction, even a monkey could be a responsible gun owner, and that all of these “accidents” and “attacks” are the result of people and kids who have not been so trained.

Ahead of Helsinki summit, Rep. Gowdy wants President Trump to ask Putin where “we can pick up the 25 Russians” indicted in Mueller probe

He’s hoping against hope that Putin will go for it and prevent his eventual indictment and prosecution, along with a busload of his colleagues.

He doesn’t realize that Putin’s not going to give up 25 perfectly good spies to save the hides of a bunch of dumbass congressmen.

Has the GOP lied for so long that they have lost both the compass which tells them what they get away, with and the compass which tells them when they’re being tricked? The latter is also an effect of being fed only lies…

Answer—Republicans have floated so up up up in the rarified air of their Ayn Randian Laissez Fairyland that their brain cells have gone beyond death.

If it were me I’d even go further and order that all US military stationed on bases inside the EU must stay on base and cannot travel outside except directly between US bases, to /from US embassies / consulates, or for emergency medical care. I’d implement snap inspections of all US flagged vessels, give US passport holders the third degree at customs. One thing I would do for sure on extremely sensitive and explicit videos is clearly identify what it’s going to show. In this case it could have been just a screenshot of the actual footage followed by something like a news story with no explicit footage actually shown. You can’t really tell for sure just from preview images.

I’m hella cautious about clicking things to avoid accidentally seeing something I don’t want so I thankfully didn’t take any chances here.

Toddlers are pure, uncorrupted by fake news or homosexuality. They don’t worry if it’s politically correct to shoot a mentally deranged gunman, they’ll just do it. The science behind this program is proven. At age four a child processes images 80% faster than an adult. Meaning that essentially, like owls, they can see in slow motion. Children under five also have elevated levels of the pheromone Blink 182 produced by the part of the liver known as the reta aura (sic?). This allows nerve reflexes to travel along cardi-b (sic?) neural pathway to the Wiz Khalifa 40% faster, saving time and saving lives.

These. Fucking. People.

Republicans for years have proclaimed the federal government’s decades-old War on Poverty a failure.

“Americans are no better off today than they were before the War on Poverty began in 1964,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., wrote in his 2016 plan to dramatically scale back the federal safety net.

Now the Trump administration is pitching a new message on anti-poverty programs, saying efforts that Republicans had long condemned as ineffective have already worked.

The White House in a report this week declared the War on Poverty “largely over and a success,” arguing that few Americans are truly poor - only about 3 percent of the population - and that the booming economy is the best path upward for those who remain in poverty.

“Over the past 54 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson’s declaration of a War on Poverty, federal spending on welfare programs targeting low-income households has grown dramatically, contributing to a substantial reduction in material hardship,” the White House Council of Economic Advisers wrote, saying that poverty had fallen by 90 percent since the programs began.

“None of these statistics is intended to deny the ways in which millions of Americans sometimes struggle to make ends meets,” the economic advisers wrote, but “the vast majority of Americans are able to meet their basic human needs.”

Putin will give Trump his orders on a usb stick so Ivanka can read them to him. Trump will hand over state secrets to Putin on his usb stick. Then they’ll relax and watch the pee tape together.

While reminding Donny of old promises and deals that must be kept for reasons that Donny well knows, but will be reiterated.

One thing for sure. The Don need not say much. This will have one side.

Trumpworld blew by Watergate in criminality well before Trump was even elected. A resignation won’t protect him: he could be open to criminal proceedings. The thought he may flee has crossed my mind more than once.

Of course we need to get there, Trump needs to fail in taking over our gov and consolidating power. So there’s that.

A friend of mine raises a good point on Facebook - we know Trump is Putin’s bitch, and in order for Putin to be able to continue what the GRU is doing here it would be helpful for Trump to get a ‘win.’

With that in mind, would it be too far-fetched to imagine that Putin would hand over the 25 hackers for extradition, with instructions to go to trial and swear that they did it - but with no contact or planning with anyone in the Trump campaign? That would get all of the Central Cult off the hook.

Then, Trump could (in a ‘gesture of goodwill’ meant to ‘improve relations’ with Russia) simply pardon everyone and as ‘punishment’ send them back home to Russia. All loose ends would then be tied.

(This scenario does not take into consideration what Mueller’s got - but after the trial and the ‘confession,’ they could just dismiss it all as ‘fake news.’)

Big Papa’s got me thinking too much, I think.

I saw more speculative pieces about how Bill Clinton would handle being the First Gentleman than I’ve seen gaming out the possibility that the Mueller investigation really does blow up this administration’s legitimacy.

People need to be thinking about the procedures and legalities to turn back all the actions and particularly the appointments made by this illegitimate administration once the evidence is in. We need to hit the ground running.

I found it obvious from day one. Someone with the entire NSA admin password takes secrets first to China and them Russia… Both have everything. Not just Russia.

Greenwald coordinated it. Snowden executed it. Greenwald slams the US at every turn. Snowden had a cushy job and life in mother Russia.

It was painfully obvious from the start. I was infuriated when Snowden was hauled as some kind of hero. He was and is a traitor.

He has four characters, a fat conservative MAGA slob on a scooter, an Isreali gun expert, an uber-liberal white man with a big gut, and an apiring artist ex-con. I have worked with two history teachers who taught entire units on world geography. I remember listening to their students bewailing the amount of work those teachers gave them, and the difficulty of the exams. I felt for them, because my HS history teachers did the same thing. I was pretty good with countries and capitals, but rivers and lakes were my downfall.

Those teachers treated geography as an important foundation of history and culture. If you don’t know where something is, how can you understand why it is important?

I figure those people would have trouble finding their home state on a map of the USA, too.

It was REPEATEDLY drilled into us in multiple grades in school that we had to know the name of every country, capital and major rivers/lakes!

But then we were required to study a Shakespeare play each year from grades 8-12 and a Gilbert & Sullivan musical in 9th grade.

We also had two years of civics classes and a “current events” period on Fridays when we reviewed and discussed news items.

I go to my high school’s website and see that those courses are gone. But there are more PE classes which reflect the school’s #1 priority—a winning football team.

Welp, I read the article and it appears the author is saying the answer is pretty much NO.

President Donald Trump thinks of himself as the king of the deal, but as he sits down with Russian President Vladimir Putin here Monday, there’s scant evidence that he’s been able to translate his business-world philosophy into effective bargaining on the international stage or at home…

So it’s not even clear that Trump knows exactly what his administration hopes to accomplish, other than a meeting with a Russian president whose profile on the global stage already has been enhanced by Trump’s attention…

There can be little doubt that Putin, who has effectively run Russia for the last 18 years, knows exactly what he wants from the U.S. in Helsinki. The question is what Trump is determined to gain: a major deal on the international stage, finally, that concretely benefits the U.S. — or just the chance to give another hollow declaration of victory, and a photo with Putin to commemorate it.

Its not every day you see a whole Roman fort (minus the bit covered by a medieval church) appear as parch marks in the grass. This is Caerhun on the River Conwy, Gwynedd this morning. The external vicus settlement to the N and the bath house near the river also very detailed.

The extended hot & dry spell in GB is bringing out a lot of ancient and pre-historic ruins.

The closest to that is when the surveying party got lost in a storm in the mountains and Idaho wound up with a panhandle instead of being K-shaped.

There is a similar story regarding the southern border of Arizona, it was supposed to continue due west and include the tip of the Gulf of Mexico, but the survey team ran out of alcohol and so made a bee line for Yuma.

Is he miffed because they rejected his escape pod?

Pretty much. He just couldn’t deal with one of the divers talking shit about it being a PR stunt and how the “sub” would’ve been absolutely useless in that environment, all of which seemed intrinsically obvious and predictable to me. It’s why I said a few days ago that he should’ve done nothing or at best worked on it in private without hyping his involvement.

The thing that kills me is that he is a smart guy but he keeps getting baited into saying dumb shit on twitter. Fern was right to compare him to Trump upthread because neither man seems to have a fucking filter and are easy to bait into saying and doing stupid shit. This whole sub fiasco started when one of Musk’s followers asked him if there was anything he could do and his initial response was understated and reasonable:

But from that reasonable and reserved response he went down this ridiculous rabbit hole that will probably end with him paying out a huge amount in a libel suit:

THE British cave diver attacked by Elon Musk has reportedly said he hasn’t ruled out taking legal action against the SpaceX CEO.

I honestly hope the guy does sue him, because it’s clearly the only way Musk is going to learn that his impulses are often goddamned toxic and out of control.

Jesus, this was the absolute worst guy for Musk to attack like this:

“It just had absolutely no chance of working,” he continued.

And Unsworth should know - he was instrumental in the boys’ rescue, convincing Thai authorities to call on a team of English divers who knew the cave, according to the Daily Mail. Unsworth’s knowledge of the Tham Luang cave, gleaned over what he says has been six years of exploration, helped locate the missing boys.

The entire basis for Musk labeling Unsworth a pedo was that he’s an expat who lives in Thailand, that’s literally it. The three premium destinations in the entire world for cave diving are Florida, the Mexican Gulf Coast and Thailand, yet the only reason Musk can think for a cave diving expert to live in Thailand is that he must be into fucking kids. That says a lot about the ugly and vicious way Elon’s mind works.

I mean I still love Dad’s car, but seriously Elon is sick and needs help.

Ferguson taught us that it is not just a matter of a few bad cops: there is a systemic problem at work here.

Prosecutors are used to working with police to obtain indictments. This is going to make them hesitant to bring a case against a police officer.

I have seen little done to address that issue. Calling in the Feds was proposed, but that would not be without its complications.

There is one little grain of reason at the bottom of this mess: NATO made a mistake of expanding right up to the borders of the Russian Federation. I saw no need for that. It was created to balance out the Warsaw Pact, and after the latter fell apart along with the USSR, the whole system really needed to be revised and rethought.

But not using the current Trump blind-bull-in-a-china-shop approach.

Yes, but I don’t see how refusing to call the cops on flagrant racists who are actively terrorizing people does anything but empower and embolden the racists. The only options that leaves are either vigilante justice or letting things get so bad that the cops get summoned anyway because the minorities being targeted had no other choice but to fight back. And if the situation is allowed to get to that point then the police response is likely to be even worse and more prone to be guided by systemic racism. I don’t think there’s an ideal solution but filming everything, and making the cops know they’re also being filmed when they show up, seems better than deciding up front that there’s no possible situation where they should be called at all.

When the USSR split up, it left Ukraine with the fifth-largest nuclear arsenal in the world. We got them to completely disarm in exchange for guarantees to help defend their territorial integrity.

Since we have reneged on our end of the deal, is it not fair that we give them their nukes back?

I cannot laugh at Trump humor anymore, and although I find the Sascha Baron Cohen stuff really revelatory and hard-hitting, it is not at all funny, it just bodes ill for the future of our country where such things have become normalized to the point that they are now part of the platform of a major political party.

What bodes worse is the ignorance of Americans. That video of a bunch of young people not being able to name countries on a map is far more troubling to me.

From downstairs:

The indictment said the Russians shifted their hacking tactics “on or about July 27, 2016” to target a domain hosted by a provider used by Clinton’s personal office and 76 email addresses at the Clinton campaign’s Internet domain. That was the same day that Trump urged the Russians “to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.”

The Faux Mob would be in the streets if those names were reversed.

And, does anyone remember when DJT and the GOP but I repeat myself said that they had been hacked by the Russians, too?

And now, after the indictments, DJT brags that they were not hacked and that the Dems, the victims of the crime, are to blame.

There really must be some kind of punishment meted out to the GOP for DJT, for his treacherous campaign and his treasonous administration. It won’t due to simply regain a majority or retake the WH. Those will be necessary.

But the next Dem WH will have to make clear that all those aided and abetted the current WH in the Russia attack on our country will pay a penalty.

Whoever the nominee ends up being in two years, I don’t want to hear any mealy-mouth talk about healing the country or bridging the divide or any of that. Whoever the nominee is must speak in the only language that the other side recognizes.

The GOP realized that none of their other candidates could beat Hillary. Then they figured out the strategy that Michael Moore pointed out to us in the summer of 2016: that all they needed to do was to win all the states that Romney took in 2012 (no problem there) plus the four rust belt states of OH, MI, PA and WI and they would have enough electoral votes to prevail (they would not even need Florida)

so they concentrated their efforts (both legal and illegal) in those states and prevailed by a few tens of thousands of votes.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s gone home to momma, meeting with Putin after Putin’s GRU engaged in cyberwarfare against the US and our allies, killed opponents of the Putin regime, and Putin has him wrapped around his finger.

Our allies are scurrying to try and maintain our alliances and security arrangements that have benefited the US for 7 decades. Trump’s throwing all that in to a wood chipper and the GOP continues to go along with it. The base is more than happy to go along with this. Trump faces little resistance from the GOP in Congress.

But the thing is that the media enabled all this too - by continuing to focus on the narrative they carefully crafted - that Hillary’s emails were the real problem, not that Russia was actively interfering in our elections.

My history classes never did that; but my Spanish teacher made sure we’d understand that Hispanics/Latinos, even in Southern California, should not be assumed to be all Mexicans.

She played us dialogue records to try to impress us with the range of accents, music records so we should be able to tell the difference, and we had research projects wherein we each had to pick a Spanish-speaking country and report on their history, show their “typical, traditional” art and clothes, bring food for everyone…

(I picked Mexico. Because I’m a terrible cook, but even I could manage tortillas. Also I had a hat, and know all the words to “La Cucaracha”. I developed an enormous crush on the guy who did Argentina, his gaucho costume was adorable and his empanadas delicious).

(I found out years later the teacher was Cuban; it must have hurt her terribly that nobody picked Cuba. The music would have been the best part of the week).

It’s a summit.

Of course it’s a summit. Everyone knows it’s one. The only ones downplaying it are those who know that the content of the conversations is what matters and calling it something less than a summit will try to diminish the importance of what was discussed - and that Putin’s giving the orders and pulling the strings on Trump.

Even from Trump’s body language you can tell he’s the submissive. He knows Putin has the upper hand on him, and there’s deference Trump accords to Putin he doesn’t to any of Trump’s rivals or our allies.

It has been building up to a thunderstorm all day here in the Rhine valley, thunder in the distance, but the surrounding hills usually break up the storms and shunt them off. looks like the case again this time

Trump’s trying to claim that things have never been worse in US-Russia relations. For that to be true, we’d have to ignore the Cuban Missile Crisis, Berlin blockade/airlift, and a whole host of other crises (1973 Yom Kippur War) that nearly saw the US and Soviets engage in direct military conflict.

It’s not even good kayfabe.

We nonetheless need to distinguish between the USSR and Russia.

There are big differences: Russia is no longer trying to export a worldwide ideology and political-economic system.

But it is certainly seeking to re-establish the old Russian Empire, including the former Soviet republics and then start exerting its political and economic influence over former Soviet Bloc nations.

Calling the police is their decision, and if their house smelled like weed then they stood as much of a chance of finding themselves on the ground with their hands cuffed as a far greater chance of getting shot by the cops they would have called to protect them than the racist interloper.

Had to fix that one for you.

re: #362 goddamnedfrank

I honest get where they’re coming from but, and this is probably the white guy pedantry in me coming out because that’s what us white guys fucking do, there’s a point where you’re being so idealistic that you’re creating a worse outcome.

You’re missing a bit (although you’re pretty good), and you acknowledge your white guy pedantry while still criticizing their decision. Their refusal to call the cops is highly rational when you consider 1) they have a BLM sign in their yard, and 2) the literal goddamned history of police in relation to the black community, especially in the south. Their mindset doesn’t lead to vigilantism, having “law enforcement” that consistently fails you since its inception leads to vigilantism. In this case the vigilantism seems to lead to putting the information out in twitter and letting social media karma work its magic.

They are not calling for World Revolution and an uprising of the Proletariat, just re-establishing the old Russian Empire and its sphere of influence. Much more limited in scope but nonetheless, they have plans that extend beyond the borders of the Russian Federation.

Do not forget the 20+ million ethnic Russians living in the diaspora outside the Russian Federation, those are his Sudetendeutsch and the crowbar in place to start implementing his plans.

Just heard Julia Ioffe on On Point, and she made a point that I had missed. Maybe I missed it here, I don’t know.

She said the FSB is the successor to the KGB, and they have a specialty of cyber espionage. She said the GRU are “the boots” and that they are jealous of the FSB, because it gets more resources and respect. She said the FSB had been inside the DNC servers for a *year* without anyone noticing, and the GRU wanted in on the action. So they also hacked the DNC, but were so klutzy that everyone finally noticed and it started the ball of yarn unraveling.

When Richard Spencer and other Islamophobes claim to be “pro-Israel”, that doesn’t automatically mean they are immune from anti-Semitism either.

Well yes, I think I agree they aren’t pushing Communism, so they aren’t trying to recreate the actual USSR politically. Just in land mass, wealth, political and military influence. They are still working to explicitly undermine NATO, EU, and western democracies. They still want to revamp the global economic and political system to put themselves back on top. That’s what trying to recreate the Russian Empire means, right?

I would even argue that the goal of the USSR wasn’t to actually have the “proletariat” run stuff, just muddle the rest of the world up enough that the people running the USSR would be on top of the pile. So what’s the functional difference?

Marxist ideology called for World Revolution. Naturally with Russia as its leader and figurehead. They were big into supporting revolutionary movements in Africa or South America. Do not see much of that coming from Putin’s Russia outside the immediate region.

I do not think that Russia wants world revolution or worldwide leadership, they just want to reassert their regional role as the major power between Europe and Asia.

So Trump believes Russia’s denial over the conclusions of our own intelligence agencies. Yet, he’s over those very agencies. Are they lying when they unequivocally state that Russia interferes in our elections?

The press needs to really challenge Trump on this as do Democrats and any Republicans left who still have a sense of loyalty to this country.

re: #555 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Marxist ideology called for World Revolution. Naturally with Russia as its leader and figurehead. They were big into supporting revolutionary movements in Africa or South America. Do not see much of that coming from Putin’s Russia outside the immediate region.

I do not think that Russia wants world revolution or worldwide leadership, they just want to reassert their regional role as the major power between Europe and Asia.

This is likely my personal background speaking, but I disagree that the USSR actually wanted world revolution or worldwide leadership as a true endstate. Regardless of stated goals, their actions seem designed to enhance the personal wealth and influence of a small group of elites, quite obviously at the expense of the proletariat. Exporting revolution was psyops. Part resource grab, part distraction. Wasn’t that the point of Animal Farm?

In that light, I look at Putin in NK, Iran, Syria, Ukraine, Georgia, the US, the UK, Germany, France, NATO, the EU, etc….and I look at the Winter Olympics and the World Cup, and I just see no functional difference in his desired outcomes from that of the USSR.

We have plenty of farcical nationalism (we invented the word “chauvinism”) but it is generally motivated by self-interest — even if misconstrued. Trump and his coterie are selling out your own country; it’s vastly different.

At this point, I see no reason nor purpose to have US forces in Europe. Suppose something serious happens. Can we trust or rely on your C-I-C? Of course not. I don’t blame your soldiers, or even your generals. But I think you should get out of the EU.

I also think we should call back our forces from Afghanistan, etc.

As long as he remains your C-I-C, no allied military will trust the US. Consequences will not be obvious or covered in the media, I suspect, but will be serious and deep-lasting. Intelligence-sharing will be the first thin impacted. Think Kim Philby becoming PM.

This is likely my personal background speaking, but I disagree that the USSR actually wanted world revolution or worldwide leadership as a true endstate. … I look at the Winter Olympics and the World Cup, and I just see no functional difference in his desired outcomes from that of the USSR.

I understand the bit about “little functional difference” and in the end the USSR had long since abandoned its ideology in favor of promoting its national interests.

But the practical side is that I see little of Russia supporting revolutionary movements in Africa or South America, for example as the USSR did.

I await the day when Ben gets knocked out by a transgender person. Let’s see how tough he is after that.

I hope it is a female to male transgender that kicks his butt.

That way he can’t cry about a man’s genetic background and aggressive nature being behind his getting his ass kicked.

No, the genetics will be female and the ass kicking will be understood in Benny’s little brain as getting his ass kicked by a woman.

Isn’t that admitting there was someone from the Trump Campaign involved? Isn’t that saying more or less that it will be very difficult to find that person?

By keeping to the claim there was no collusion he can say they weren’t involved.

It is rather strange, maybe a tell, that he would word it like a challenge to find that person or people.

I was taking a pair of bikes out to put in my space on the sidewalk (like I do 5 days a week) and a small, older woman asked me if there was any other place on the street that could change the battery on her nice, old watch (wait, if it needs a battery, how old can it be? GeneJockey?). I told her about the one down the street, and she told me, ‘Yes, they did it last time, but they’re closed on Monday. I don’t know what’s up with that.’ I said, ‘It’s the street. 80% of the businesses are closed Mondays. I’m closed Thursdays, just to be different.’ And the conversation when on from there, to places not remembered, except for this part; [her] ‘I’m 81 years old.’ Me; ‘Wow. You don’t look it. You look like you’re in your 60s!’ In part, I said that because the opportunity to compliment somebody for looking 60 does not happen every day. From there, we talked about how much she walks, which is her explanation for looking so good. Marathons. In cities all over the southwest, from San Diego to San Antonio. Mountains she’s climbed. ‘But my husband is 89. He doesn’t do it with me any more. But he swims 6 days a week.’

Just thought I’d give you one of my distractions. Sometimes, they’re worth typing up.

I’m not sure if I’m not explaining my overall point well, or you are just really committed to this exporting ideology thing. Russia is currently attempting to expand its influence in both Africa and Latin America in addition to Eastern Europe, Central and Western Asia. They are not literally supporting rebel groups, but if you’ve already conceded that the goal of the USSR was not exporting Communism/Marxism then…what’s the argument again?

Also, you keep saying ‘national interest’ when we all know that Putin’s and the USSR leadership of days past were doing what was best for Putin and the USSR leadership, not ‘the nation’.

I see some subtle but key differences between modern Russia and the USSR.

The “exporting ideology” thing is the main point. Their current nationalist ideology is much more that of the old Empire: Autocracy and Orthodoxy.

They are concentrating much more on their immediate surroundings and less concern with global politics.

You know, don’t you, that you are one of the few people in the U.S. who actually has the power to something about it? — such as, say, refusing to vote for the POTUS’s judicial nominees unless and until he leaves office. That’d bring things to a head quickly

Oh no that might upset people.

If they are active (overtly) in Asia, Eastern Europe, Central America, South America, and Africa…and active (covertlyish) in Western Europe North America, …how much more of the world do they have to be involved in to reach the level of attempting to become a global power?

Folks, stop with the “what does Putin have on Trump” bullshit.

TRUMP ADMIRES PUTIN. He agrees with Putin’s ruthless methodology. He wants what Putin has, power unencumbered by any restraint.

Putin doesn’t need to blackmail Trump.

Trump volunteered.t]

The GOP ideal for America is pretty much what they see in Russia: autocracy, oligarchy, militarism, theocracy.

Only major difference being Fundamentalist Protestantism as state religion vs Russian Orthodoxy.

We have to assume some degree of collective responsibility for this.

When people started using social media as a source of news on politics and current events and when “Trending on Twitter” became a news item in and of itself, I knew that our Republic was in grave danger, but did not realize that it was an existential threat.

Russia saw a weakness and exploited it. And yes, had Obama acted with more resolve on the issue , it would have backfired as interfering in the election, so he had to let it go…

I definitely agree with that. I think this is all means though, not end. End is absurdly powerful Putin and his cronies, not “Russia”. Nationalist ideology, Marxism, Communism…for the USSR this is all smokescreen. That’s why they are buying oil fields in Venezuela and selling weapons to everyone (which Trump is aiding), because that’s how they make more money for Russia which they can then…co-opt. It’s the same game, just at different stages.

The dynamic, IMO, isn’t so much the “30%” - they are probably pretty hopeless - but with the “70%”; an unfortunately large percentage of whom can’t be bothered to engage in the political process, or who just tune it out as irrelevant, or vote reflexively (R) out of habit. One would hope that accumulated outrage at the abysmal incompetence of this Administration (and the enabling/grifting of its Congressional apologists) might sway enough of the apathetic to finally get up off their asses and DO something: but it’s going to be an uphill struggle.

1:33 PM - Jul 16, 2018

Speaker Ryan’s wimpy statement that has no teeth.

Typical Ryan.

re: #862 Jay C

The dynamic, IMO, isn’t so much the “30%” - they are probably pretty hopeless - but with the “70%”; an unfortunately large percentage of whom can’t be bothered to engage in the political process, or who just tune it out as irrelevant, or vote reflexively (R) out of habit. One would hope that accumulated outrage at the abysmal incompetence of this Administration (and the enabling/grifting of its Congressional apologists) might sway enough of the apathetic to finally get up off their asses and DO something: but it’s going to be an uphill struggle.

Point is that 30% can be counted on to get out and vote for Trump, that means the GOP just needs to get another 20% of the remaining voters to support them to secure a majority, especially in a system that is weighted in their favor.

But I think that Trumps antics in Russia are going to dampen the enthusiasm of that hard 30% while also inspiring a lot of indifferent or apathetic voters to get out and make their voices heard.

But again, we will need more than 50% of the vote to wrest an electoral or congressional majority from the GOP

Ok, everybody…RT this.

I fondly remember Senator Shelby who was once a Democrat, and who was so courageous, that he waited for the morning after the GOP takeover of Congress in 1994 to switch parties.

It was a momentous act of very much courageous to do that. (spit)

It’s not just the number. It’s the ratio (comments to karma) - quality versus quantity.

Or the linked tweet without a comment that gets 10+ dings.

Being realistic…the number doesn’t mean much.

Well, unless you get 20 or more downdings. That means something.

There was no stated purpose. The point of this was for Trump to meet someone who would talk nice to him after dealing with NATO.

What added attitude?

Fuck you Trump. Now we are really pissed.

“There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues to attempt to undermine democracy here and around the world,” Ryan said in a statement. “That is not just the finding of the American intelligence community but also the House Committee on Intelligence. The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals. The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy.”

Well, there’s no real answer to that because the WH never stated a purpose for the Helsinki meet-up. And in any case, a lot of it was, as we saw, behind closed doors with no record. And, as it was, what it turned out to be was:

1) Huge PR win for Putin and Russia (no question)
2) YUUUUGE PR embarrassment for Trump
3) Giant “FU” to Euros/NATO, (“trade” as an excuse)

But I’m sure the Admin and its creatures will be relying on their Enabler Media to spin this as a Big Win….

I really hate to repeat this but I was against DT before he even decided to run. For me penning the press was the last straw. I voted for HRC and I would vote for her again.

Press penning was something I noticed first at the national DNC events, and I did not like it one bit. At least the press was not being declared enemies of the people by Hillary. For the record, I voted for her and I would vote for her again.
