In Which Donald Trump Blames “US Stupidity” for Poor Relations With Russia

Politics • Views: 34,223

We all knew Trump’s meeting with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin was going to be horrible. And it was.

He prefaced the meeting with a tweet blaming “US stupidity” for the poor state of relations with Russia.

Not election hacking. Not assassinations of journalists, political opponents, and critics. Not the invasion and annexation of Crimea.

US stupidity.

And Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave him a pat on the head for this one.

Then, after meeting privately with Putin for two hours, Trump gave a press conference in which he backed Putin’s claim that Russia had nothing to do with hacking the 2016 election.

And Putin admitted openly that he wanted Trump to win the election.

They’re laughing at us.

I don’t know what else to say at this point. The grand experiment of the United States has never been in greater danger from its own leader.

US stupidity: we started relying on Social Media as a source of news.

Our print and broadcast media started relying on social media as a source of news

It was easier to get an intern to browse what was trending on Twitter than to pay journalists to do real research

Russia recognized that and took full advantage of it

That is stupidity.

What Trump and his organization did was collusion, and that is another story.

They can drop the “and misdemeanors”.

It’s high crimes all the way down here with Trumpworld.

He’s openly conspiring with a foreign power to affect our foreign policy, undermine our alliances, and throw our law enforcement and national security apparatus under the bus to appease a foreign leader whose actions included attempts (successfully) to subvert American elections and elections by our allies over the past 2 years.

Russia continues efforts to subvert our elections.

Russia continues efforts to sow chaos and discord through their misinformation campaign online and continued hacking.

Russia continues efforts to destabilize the global economic system, which is tilted in America’s favor for 70+ years so that they can make inroads (hence the ongoing trade wars against everyone for no good reason, while Russia gets off without so much as a slap on the wrist for interfering in our elections).

Posted this at the end of last thread…

Someone mentioned it earlier…but Trump just asked the CIA, FBI, DoD and DoJ to ramp up all investigations and contingencies and start to push this through with a little more attitude added.

What added attitude?

Fuck you Trump. Now we are really pissed.

Ted Lieu:
“What Trump did today was utterly shameful, and a slap in the face to the professionals in the Department of Justice and our intelligence community. Today we watched a U.S. President offer total deference to a hostile foreign power while attacking U.S. institutions. By refusing to admit that Russia attacked our Democracy, or that Russia did anything wrong whatsoever, Trump is disturbingly regurgitating the Kremlin’s talking points.

Having served on active duty, I feel nauseous thinking about Trump’s statements. Despite how desensitized we’ve become to Trump’s remarkably un-presidential actions, today should stand out as obscene. What happens next will determine whether we allow our President to cede American ideals and authority to a foreign power. We’re now at a crossroads where we have to decide whether we’re willing to let blind partisan loyalty to Trump lead to the debasing of our country. After this appalling display, will the Republicans finally stand up for America?”

It’s also a great way to get ground information from areas in which you cannot reasonably send people or which have a media more heavily controlled by the state, or where this is media suppression. Think Arab Spring, Ferguson.

The biggest problem is not that media uses these sources, is that they use them uncritically. That is probably a vulnerability shared by each new means of delivering information to the masses. Newspapers, cable news, and the internet were all in this space once. Some of us are better at vetting social media sources now than we were two years ago, but Russia caught on quicker due to their need for asymmetric levers.

If you have a guy who wants to be a dictator, and a group of supporters - some in the legislative branch - who want to let him, would having a bunch of people resign actually hurt or help?

You know which group quitting would actually hurt Trump the most? Treasury. That group should quit all at once. When the SS checks stop flowing, then reality will set in.

“…U.S. intelligence officials now believe with “a high level of confidence” that Russian President Vladimir Putin became personally involved in the covert Russian campaign to interfere in the U.S. presidential election, senior U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.

Two senior officials with direct access to the information say new intelligence shows that Putin personally directed how hacked material from Democrats was leaked and otherwise used. The intelligence came from diplomatic sources and spies working for U.S. allies, the officials said.

Putin’s objectives were multifaceted, a high-level intelligence source told NBC News. What began as a “vendetta” against Hillary Clinton morphed into an effort to show corruption in American politics and to “split off key American allies by creating the image that [other countries] couldn’t depend on the U.S. to be a credible global leader anymore,” the official said.”

I think you fail to realize the true nature of today’s NRA. They are no longer a hunter-focused, dad’s arm around the son’s shoulder out in the countryside gun rights organization.

Since 1980 or so they morphed into a radical right wing White-Christian supremacist group with a dominant political arm focused on building an international presence in “white” countries via native hard right wing supremacist groups. The NRA now operates rather openly with like-minded international miscreants and con men. The NRA’s presence inside Russia has been known for awhile now openly aligning with anti-gay, anti-minority, anti-woman’s rights individuals in an effort to extract funding, business opportunities, and expanding their 4Chan-style sub-culture.

Right, the NRA my grandfather joined along with several of my grand uncles was about responsible gun ownership not some right wing bullshit that Wayne LaPierre has because he’s an insecure racist dick.

Back then, the NRA were huge environmentalists. Because obviously, deer hunters and duck hunters are deeply concerned about habitat preservation.

My book club is reading Bill Browder’s Red Notice about Hermitage Capital, why Putin hates him, and Sergei Magnitsky and Browder’s work to get the Magnitsky Act passed.
Very timely, as it turns out. Putin basically just suggested trading these 12 indicted Russians for Browder because he holds a grudge even longer than Trump does.

Underlining why Bill Browder saw the wisdom of giving up his American citizenship and becoming a British subject.

When I was a teenager in the 1970s I read a potboiler political novel by Allen Drury (who wrote Advise and Consent). It was called Come Nineveh, Come Tyre, and it postulated that a president weak on the lefties and commies could be captured (figuratively)by the Soviet Union. Fast forward about 45 years later, and the capture has happened , it’s by the Russian, in fact, a guy from the KGB. I think Drury would be astonished to see Dems and “lefties” raising hell.

For the record, it wasn’t a good book. It posited the American people turning leftward in a completely unexpected way. I’m just bringing it up because a president being heavily influenced by the Russians has been fiction in the past. Now we’re seeing reality.

Dunno: Curbelo seems to be somewhat less of a diehard Trump-humper than some of his colleagues: FL-26 probably has more alligators than voters, and went for Hillary 57-41 in 2016 (though Carlos eked out a modest, but respectable win). Though his wiki notes:

As of January 2018, Curbelo had voted with his party 86.3% of the time so far in the 115th United States Congress.[22] During this same period, he voted with Donald Trump’s positions 83.6% of the time

What Trump did today was so blatant, the only way to make sense of it is to understand this: he believes he’s above the law and will never face any consequences for his traitorous actions. And he’s enjoying rubbing this in our faces.

4:03 PM - Jul 16, 2018

I hope by “our faces” you include the entire Washington DC “machine” is getting the fuck you finger from Trump.

They have never paid attention to all the times he has criticized Washington DC and said they are stupid and he can do better without them.

What? Do they all need to be in the pee tapes to understand he is pissing all over our U.S. Constitution and all the people in our government?

And how the fuck can this asshole that couldn’t run a money machine like a casino even feel like he has any standing to call out anyone?

We’ve known he is the emperor with no cloths…but today he turned to the people that tell him how nice he looks and said “kiss my big orange butt” making it clear there have never been clothes on Trump.

Any support after today is willfully criminally ignorant.

Fuckin’-A, Lizards, it just keeps getting better and better!

The FBI has obtained wiretaps from Spanish authorities of conversations involving an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who met with President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., during the 2016 US presidential election, Yahoo News reported.

Alexander Torshin is a prominent Russian banker, politician, and gun-rights activist who is closely tied to the National Rifle Association. He has long been on the Spanish government’s radar for his suspected involvement in money laundering and organized crime, and media reports earlier this year indicated that the FBI was investigating whether Torshin used the NRA as a vehicle to funnel Russian money into the election to boost Trump.

José Grinda, who has led investigations by the Spanish government into organized crime in the country, said this week that the FBI had in recent months requested and received transcripts of wiretapped conversations between Torshin and Alexander Romanov, a former Russian banker with connections to the mob who has been convicted of money laundering.

That’s what I was saying the other day as well. The only way Trump would have looked tough was to demand that Russia turn over the 12. Since he didn’t - and we knew he wouldn’t - it just looks like what we all knew, that Putin owns him. Those who can deny it were already on Putin’s side. The rest of the country, the barely paying attention part, now gets to see what’s going on.

I wonder if Nunes wants to reconsider his re-election efforts

Well, so far, such polling as has been done shows him moderately ahead with LVs, but in a red rural district like CA-22, he ought to be well in front. However, he has a determined challenger this year, and - despite his Intelligence Committee clownery being the main strike against him, IMO - Trump’s farm-product tariffs are likely to heavily impact the heavily agricultural district: a factor that might get the farmers (mid-size businesses for the most part, I think: these aren’t The Real McCoys) to jump to a Dem who might seem able to help them out with immigration (i.e. farm labor) and export issues better than a GOPer. Maybe.

Advise and Consent was very good. Then Drury made it into a 6-volume epic of political allegory with predictable results (Come Ninevah, Come Tyre was book 5, IIRC).

The Ghost of a Flea  Jul 16, 2018 • 2:13:06pm

I think it should be repeated, even though I’ve said it before:

There are plenty of social conservatives and reactionaries that view a large number of US citizens as Not American because they don’t comply with the narrow definition of American they apply…which exist entirely separate from the on-the-books laws and equal franchise and civil liberty.

These same people adore the Russian Federation because its mix of social conservatism and authoritarianism with a nationalist bent reflects what they want out of society.

These folks won’t care about interference in an election because they view it as a correction of a system that is Wrong because it allows dissent from their positions.

Don’t assume this is all about kompromat and assets. The cultural link-up of Russia and US reactionaries has been occurring quite openly. The kleptocrats have been associating with one another openly. There are people in both the base and in office who simply view the RF’s system as superior to democracy for their purposes.

Mitch McConnell has made it his life’s work to create a permanent conservative majority in US government. He’s always been shifty and good at hacking procedure to get what he wants. He’s one of the ones that’s both cynically venal and idealistically authoritarian, so a flawed democracy with weakened accountability is win-win.

If there’s a single person that absolutely would do stuff without being extorted, it’s him. He’s already demonstrated complete contempt for good order to achieve court-packing. The end justifies the means, so he’ll cover for any bad (R) behavior, no matter what, until he gets his checklist.

I just sent the following to the sane(r) Senator in my state:

Dear Senator Burr,

As a citizen of the great state of North Carolina and one of your many constituents, I ask that you consider my entreaty and respond to my inquiries.

As chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, you should have a clear eyed view of what is going on. President Donald Trump is threatening the strength of each of our alliances and is now weakly professing to believe the autocratic president of Russia over all evidence and reason.

Our democracy depends on free and fair elections. Russian interference cannot be allowed to go unpunished, let alone unacknowledged, nay repudiated, by our own President. A corrosive and invidious poison is seeping its way through both the Republican party, its current governance, and the nation as a whole.

This state of affairs, and specifically the events of today, should shock you. It should shock you from any complacency you have about the state of the executive branch. It should shock you from any notions that the situation is minor and merely aesthetic. It should disabuse you of any notion that the situation can be considered “manageable”. It should shock you into consideration that the party of which you are member cannot adequately respond to the situation as it to has been corrupted and co-opted into deference to a cult of personality.

You must ask your self, as a man of conscious, what will you do? Do you believe that the leadership of your party is allowing adequate response to the crisis? That even a plurality of your party’s members in the Congress will allow, nay demand, an adequate response?

Each day the administration and the President reveal new depths of their dangerous, callous, feckless desire to govern not in service of the United States, but in their own private interest.

You cannot adequately respond from within your own party. Heed the example of those before who have followed their conscience and declared their independence. Caucus with the Democrats. Urge other members of your party to do so as well, in both the House and the Senate.

If not this, that what remedy can adequately address such perfidy?

Respectfully,
uncah91

Unfortunately, I think you would be hard pressed to charge the president with espionage either. Since the president is in charge of foreign policy and has pretty much complete discretion over classified information, when he does it it is just a really bad policy change. Undeclared though. For actual formal charges maybe not gonna fly but in a non legal sense, say a political betrayal of American interests in favor of Russia, or personal gain is probably good for a long stretch, if not of his neck.

Treason requires actually taking up arms against the US or giving aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime. Short of that it is something else. Espionage, money laundering, campaign finance violations etc.

It may be pedantic, but if we are talking about hanging people, we should probably have the law right.

Nope. Article 3 Section 3: “Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.”

One: The Russians committed several acts of war during the 2016 election season.
Two: These acts of war show that the Russian Federation is a defacto enemy of the US.
Three: Trump and the GOP have been performing actions giving them “Aid and Comfort” to these enemies.
Four: Trump admitted said treason on international TV and is probably stupid enough to do so in open court.

This is what it reduces down to: there is a percentage of this country that sees any method of attaining hegemony as legitimate.

The political culture of the US right has made it central to their beliefs that all manifestations of liberal are an existential threat. Not just an annoyance, or wrong/wrong (inaccurate/immoral), but malicious and intent upon harm.

People keep saying “this is not normal” but what’s going on is a natural extension of what’s been “normal” for fifty, sixty years: pundits announcing that any expansion of norms is the vanguard of an attempt to destroy society and institute one or more forms of depravity.

It’s just as much about what he didn’t say as what he said.

To sum it up…he sold out his own Intel agencies and most of DC by saying Putin/Russia had nothing to do with the election/collusion.

But Hillary’s server and 30,000 emails…

Amazon is still hammered on Prime Day. Don’t know if it’s because their servers can’t handle the traffic or the Russians DDOS’ed ‘em. Probably both.

Or it could be the strike that its employees planned for that day, though I’m not sure if it was Prime Day or Bezos officially becoming the world’s richest man that had them go for it. Maybe some of the IT people support the strikers?

As to war:
Sweden nabbed 3 righties that had received paramilitary training in Russia, which they used to commit at least 3 bombings. It’s not unlikely that pattern is repeated in Europe and the US. Then we have the cyber aspect. Can assymetric warfare be legally defined?

re: #461 danarchy

Treason requires actually taking up arms against the US or giving aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime. Short of that it is something else. Espionage, money laundering, campaign finance violations etc.

It may be pedantic, but if we are talking about hanging people, we should probably have the law right.

My friends in Ukraine have been trying to figure out WTF it could be, that a mere hooker tape is not enough to make Trump go this overboard and self-damaging, and what they’ve come up with is …

that it’s some kind of homosexual tape. Either a hooker with a strap-on, or some big buff Siberian dude bending Trump over, and giving him what he’s been giving America.

Remember, Russia is FAR more homophobic than the U.S.; the Russian mob (which is what Putin is, really) considers being gay the worst, lowest, most shameful thing imaginable. So it makes sense that if you really want to compromise a person, you get the most damaging possible information on them, right?

Which is one of the things that they have in common with Trump’s base. And Trump himself, come to think of it. Imagine all the MAGA-hats being confronted with tapes on WikiLeaks of Trump squealing in delight as he’s getting just pounded? There would be a run on mops in Wal-Marts all across the Bible Belt just to clean up all the ‘asploding heads.

Maybe this is why Putin was giggling like a schoolboy? Because he knew what he has on Trump is SO MUCH worse than any Pee-Pee tape, something that strikes right to the heart of Trump’s image as a ladykilling cocksman…

Sorry to anyone who clicked on that and barfed a little into their mouths, but it’s one of the hot rumors. Probably not true. Probably.
