The false binary of capitulation vs. total war.

It was how Hitler got Britain and France to give him Czechoslovakia: “Give me the territory I want or prepare for war.” And since neither nation had the popular support for war, they bowed down to his demands.

The hilarity of the situation is (of course) that the wingnuts want us to believe that war with Russia is so undesirable that remove all obstacles in Donny’s path is preferable, BUT we’re also supposed to believe that he’s so much “tougher” on Russia than any president since St. Ron.

Northern Ireland, land of creationists:

DUP ex-MLA Nelson McCausland appointed to Education Authority board

Former DUP assembly member Nelson McCausland has been appointed to the Education Authority board.

[…]

The appointment comes eight years after Mr McCausland wrote to the Ulster Museum’s Board of Trustees urging them to reflect creationist theories of the universe’s origins.

[…]

The DUP are the ones propping up Theresa May as PM, and they are also the ones keeping women in NI from getting abortions.

Last night I was wondering if I could find a bookie who would take odds on how many indictments the Mueller investigation might yield.
I think I’ve found my man:

Bookmaker increases chances of Trump being impeached after Putin summit

The chances that President Trump will be impeached are rising, according to one Irish bookmaker, one day after Trump refused to denounce Russian meddling in the 2016 election following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Paddy Power increased the likelihood of Trump being impeached on Tuesday from 8-1 to 2-1, according to Yahoo News. The news outlet first reported that the betting company also increased the likelihood of Trump being impeached this year, from 12-1 to 8-1.

“After the carnage of the last few days, we’ve seen plenty of punters Putin money on Trump’s impeachment again — although I’m sure they’ll soon get a message, in Russian, urging them to stop,” a Paddy Power spokesman told Yahoo News.(emphasis added ;)

A really good read.

The couple of little trolling smirks from Putin during the presser were really nice, but alas I am not a dentist so I could be reading them wrong. /
But it is such a stark reminder about who, out of the 2 of them, was completely in control there and invoking so many dangerous, historic dynamics.

Blech!

My father roomed with a friend who was studying psychiatry when he was in grad school. Among their discussions was whether you were crazy if you talked to yourself.

They concluded that one was _not_ crazy if one talked to oneself. Also, that one was _not_ crazy if one answered oneself. However, if you got into an argument with yourself and lost, you might need to start worrying.

I think it’s fairly clear that the press is succeeding at the tasks for which they are paid. Those tasks just don’t align with upholding democracy, speaking truth to power and informing viewers without injecting false balance.

They don’t want that; Driver’s licenses will be fine. Oh, lots of urban folks don’t have drivers licenses? All the better.

“Well if you need a driver’s license why don’t you buy a car and move to the surburbs? No, sorry, forget that last part about moving to the suburbs. We moved here to get away from you. Just get a DL for a car you don’t have, OK?”

I thought that most DMV’s offer non-driver’s license ID cards

Of course, a national ID card for all citizens and legal resident aliens would put an end to a lot of voter and social services fraud and make it harder to establish oneself here without proper documentation.

but nobody is going to go for a simple solution like that.

Good morning. Advocacy starts early here.

From my FB

Years ago I would argue for a Bush (did not fly to Iran on SR 71) or later Obama, mostly against that birther garbage. At the time it was easy to defend any of those Presidents without comparison to any previous. You just did not hear or see “but Nixon!” One just laid out the facts as known and had at it. With those that defend Trump, it’s most often nothing but a comparison to what is now an imaginary scenario. HRC winning. Or fictionalized views of recent history under Obama. As a lifelong political activist and observer, it’s fascinating to see such a huge house built upon a sands of time foundation

And there are many people, especially in the south (whom are black) who do not have the documentation required (e.g., they were born at home, or are very old where paper documentation was lost to fire, etc. - all before computerization). And then there is requiring Those People to give more and more documentation requiring them to make multiple trips.

It sounds like a simple solutions but when you have states who are hell bent on not registering people, people will not be registered.

After Trump and Putin met in Helsinki, many pundits and politicians struggled to understand what it is they saw, to rationalize it, to explain it away, to speculate on what kinds of kompromat the Russians could have on Trump, when the answer—like infidelity or death—was staring them, us, in the face. Yes, Putin has something on Trump: He helped him win. That’s the kompromat.

OK: IANAL, this (decision? opinion? suggestion?) looks to me like it could be read two ways. If the question is illegal foreign donations to political campaigns, does “defendants” here mean “foreigners” or “Americans”? If the former, it makes vague sense, sorta/maybe, even if a lame exculpation (IMO), and the usual GOP bullshit. If the latter, it sounds like, basically, “ignorance of the law is a valid excuse”: and yeah, Kavanaugh should explain this. In detail.

Cannot be too optimistic, but up to now, GOP strategy counted on him pulling in a solid 30% of active voters. That left them only needing another 20% or so of active voters to guarantee them a majority.

I think that solid 30% is now not as solid or reliable as it was before Helsinki.

So yesterday, I finally finished The Count of Monte Cristo and the baseball light reading I was doing and I started: a new Nixon biography and The Right Stuff. Nixon I dunno feels timely right now dontchathink?

Which Nixon bio? There was an Evan Thomas one from a year or two ago, and more recently another one from an author whose name I forget but who also wrote a bio of Clarence Darrow.

An older Nixon bio by Tom Wicker is also surprisingly good.

John A. Farrell is who you’re thinking of and he wrote this one. I’ll check out that Darrow one. I like his writing style so far. He starts by introducing us to then Naval Lt. Nixon and we see how Nixon was able to despite being one of the most unnatural politicians I’ve ever studied become only the second man along with FDR who was very much a natural politician to be on a presidential ticket for a major party five times.

Among the people that Cohen duped in his new comedy series, “Who is America?” is Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, the Republican congressman from Orange County, California, who admitted on screen that he supports putting guns in the hands of children to make schools safer. Following the show’s premiere, Rohrabacher’s challenger Harley Rouda issued a statement calling out the incumbent for falling for the prank.

I will admit that I laughed when I saw him bumbling around during that review of the guard. He has so little self-awareness that I’m sure he’s oblivious to how stupid he looked and how rude he was.

OTOH he’s constantly begging for praise in his tweets, so maybe deep down inside he knows he’s a total fuckup.

Interesting. I didn’t really know them. They remind me of Comsat Angels somewhat.

An amazing band of that time. And Jaz Coleman is an extremely talented man - he disbanded KJ in 1982 and announced he was going to become a classical composer. And damned if he didn’t go ahead and do it!

He and KJ’s bass player Youth did a series of symphonic treatments of rock, including Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Pink Floyd. His original classical compositions have been compared to those of Mahler.

Bass player Martin Glover (AKA Youth) became a pretty well-known producer in his own right, working with everyone from Kate Bush to Guns N’Roses.

Their songs have been covered by both Metallica and Foo Fighters. The Foos have been doing this one live.

Killing Joke- Requiem

KJ’s catalog is well worth diving into. They were fearless, crossing musical boundaries with ease. I’m so looking forward to seeing them, as I never got a chance when they were around the first time.

And aside from that, the woman is 92. He has no respect for women and none for her age. That shows that he is completely classless.

Fuck, I am 59 and still open doors for people older than me.

I still shake my head at all the #metoo bastards who force themselves on women.

Guess it was my upbringing: my dad died when I was young and left me with my mom and older sister as the “man of the house”, I always saw women as people to respect, look up to, look after and protect.

not in a patronizing sense, but because they were to be treasured.

got no respect or understanding for men who treat women any other way.

Yes, but Trump claimed victory saying it was the first time a President had reviewed the guard or some hogwash like that.

The first time in 70 years that the Queen was on the throne! MAGA!!

Photographic evidence and historical accuracy notwithstanding. His base probably can’t even find England on a map of the world. Not sure Trump can either.

Does anyone think U.S. Intelligence services already know what Trump and Putin discussed in that 2 hour meeting?

I do. And I have a suspicion we know it through the Russia side of things.

It can’t be let out right away for obvious reasons, but it will trickle out over time.

The Mueller investigation will get the details before anyone.

There is no way that Trump could let it be known he was going to be in a private meeting with Putin and our intel would allow that to happen.

The whole family liked the Obamas; all of them turned up to meet Barak and Michelle every time. Including Kate, before the marriage.

For Donald, it was just the Queen. All by herself, because it was her duty and she had to. But the rest of the family refused to meet him. Especially Charles and William; possibly because he’d said some very rude things about Diana.

Looks like it’ll be the same this year - but it’s raining and windy and hardly the best weather, so I’m thinking attendance might be down a bit.

All the hotels and hostels are completely booked - not just in Ostrava, but in a 20 kilometer radius of Ostrava as well.

Fair point. It’s just from prior experiences that I left it fester for too long and I end up getting even more pissed off. It just made it seem like she doesn’t respect me at all, and I’ve just been less inclined to put up with it. I used to be a doormat for many years and that got me nothing but disrespect and ridicule.

“… in the unjust world of 2008, the Joker held more answers. “They’re only as civilized as the world allows them to be. When the chips are down, these civilized people…they’ll eat each other,” the Joker says. His words rang true, and now 10 years after the film’s release they carry even more weight.”

A very thoughtful and troubling response.

I think a lot of it goes to “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?” which is an expectation that anything and everything they’ve ever said is A-Ok. Though, that said, I find this coming from a pretty young person troubling.

Some white people confound me. And I am white. I don’t get it no matter how hard I look. What makes people so hateful? Especially white people that have succeeded? What is the need to put others down when you have “arrived”? I can understand the psychology of making a scapegoat when you’re a failure and cannot accept your own failings as a reason (I don’t agree but I understand the psychosis behind it), but when you’re arriving or arrived…why?

Yeah I’m tempted to cut someone a little slack for what was said at that age, but still, it raises a lot of questions about what kind of environment he could be in that saying those things publicly was not viewed as effed up.

On the other hand, I grew up in a pretty “good” religious family, yet the music I listened to at that age, the lyrics of a lot of that stuff, was not always exactly very respectful of women. But I wonder about the racial and anti-gay stuff.

I’ll file that under ‘As if I don’t have enough shit to worry about today.’

Have you ever watched any of the Shark Week shows where they have ariel views of the water near shore? From points in the far north (MA for sure, possibly further north), there were often thousands of sharks gathering.

You touched on something important. I think the environments part of the equation is an important dynamic too. I mean, when white folks are among themselves or in what they think is a ‘safe’ space they can let it all fly. We all know it happens a lot. And because half my family is white they know and have had plenty of those interactions. Because people don’t even stop to think that these white people might have black or gay or immigrant family members or that their fellow whites might be very educated in anti-racism. So then, those environments and safe spaces get pushed into public because what’s the purpose of having your privilege if you can’t take it out for a spin and flaunt it. Claiming the public domain is an important part of the system.

They are so full of themselves and so protected in their richly insulated lives apologies are just a business statement…something they need to do for business.

What they have already said is their true character.

It’s like Trump…everything is a walk-back, but not really. The apology really is “I am sorry you don’t understand my right to mouth off because of who I am. And you are who? That’s right…a nobody.”

In cities and counties across the country — including Little Rock, Ark.; Phoenix, Ariz.; southeast Michigan; central Utah; and here in Tennessee — the Koch brothers are fueling a fight against public transit, an offshoot of their longstanding national crusade for lower taxes and smaller government.

The Kochs’ opposition to transit spending stems from their longstanding free-market, libertarian philosophy. It also dovetails with their financial interests, which benefit from automobiles and highways.
