Really? And yet in front of the world while standing beside Putin, he repeatedly denied Russian interference in our elections. He must believe that we are all dumb like the stupid racists who still support him.

We’re not. And we vote.

This portion of his CBS interview is mind-boggling. He contradicts himself within a sentence.

“But he denies it, so if you believe U.S. intelligence agencies, is Putin lying to you?” Jeff Glor asked.

Trump said that he doesn’t want to get into “whether or not he’s lying,” only repeating his hostage statement line that he has confidence in his intelligence agencies.

Glor noted that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats has already said that the Russian threat is ongoing.

Trump said that he would accept that since Coats “is an expert.” However, he then negated it in less than 60 seconds.

“I will tell you, though, it better not be. It better not be,” Trump said, appearing to not believe the definitive truth outlined by Coats and others.

I don’t know if everyone remembers when they found out their parents weren’t perfect, but the one thing Trump doesn’t want to find out is that strong men would lie to him. How would he trust his father’s teachings if this were true?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday opened the door to a possible criminal case against the Donald J. Trump Foundation, but the state attorney general’s office said it had not determined that a criminal referral was warranted.

“At Governor Cuomo’s direction, the state stands ready to provide the (New York) Attorney General with the appropriate criminal referral on this matter if and when she asks for it,” Alphonso David, the governor’s counsel, said in a statement.

The state’s attorney general, Barbara Underwood, filed a civil lawsuit against President Donald Trump, three of his children and his foundation in June, saying Trump had illegally used the nonprofit as a personal “checkbook” for his own benefit, including his 2016 presidential campaign.

Underwood would need a criminal referral to file a criminal suit.

“We continue to evaluate the evidence to determine what additional actions may be warranted, and will seek a criminal referral from the appropriate state agency as necessary,” Amy Spitalnick, a spokeswoman for Underwood, said in a statement.

It was almost too idiotic to cause a desk flip. Basically, his argument is the 14th amendment means what he says it means because reasons and therefore:

Why shouldn’t the president act to defend the clear meaning of the 14th Amendment? Judges faithful to their oaths will have no choice but to agree with him. Birthright citizenship was a mistake whose time has gone.

If it was a “mistake whose time has gone” then it seems to me that is an admission that it is part of the Constitution and will take another amendment, not a judge, to get rid of it.

Next-level Google bomb: Search Idiot, Get Trump

When you type the word “idiot” into Google’s image search, Trump is the first returned result. This is partly because the Green Day song American Idiot was used by protesters to soundtrack his trip to London. But since then there’s also been a concerted campaign to capitalize on that association, and manipulate Google’s algorithm, by linking the word to the picture. Mostly this involved people upvoting a post containing a photo of him and the word “idiot” on Reddit.

As someone who was part of the original Google Bomb - the ‘miserable failure’ during the W administration - I approve this message.

Also, I found it amusing on re-reading the amendment that it is very explicit that people within US jurisdiction, regardless of citizenship status, have equal protection under the law.

Oh, he has some plump circular logic for that—(let me Anton-splain it). He says that it means “not owing allegiance to anybody else” — that is, to no other country or tribe. Then goes on to DECLARE that:

for decades, U.S. officials — led by immigration enthusiasts in and out of government — have acted as though “subject to the jurisdiction” simply means “subject to American law.” That is true of any tourist who comes here.

But he KNOWS better, don’t ya know and states declaratively:

The framers of the 14th Amendment added the jurisdiction clause precisely to distinguish between people to whom the United States owes citizenship and those to whom it does not. Freed slaves definitely qualified. The children of immigrants who came here illegally clearly don’t.

Well, he’s a little loose with his “framers” as he’s citing Jacob Howard and claims that Trumbull agreed (that’s who he attributes the “subject to the jurisdiction” as “not owing allegiance to anybody else” explanation.)

However, in the real world—concerning the children born in the United States to parents who are not U.S. citizens (and not foreign diplomats), three senators, including Trumbull, as well as President Andrew Johnson, asserted that both the Civil Rights Act and the Citizenship Clause would confer citizenship on them at birth, and no senator offered a contrary opinion.

If it was a “mistake whose time has gone” then it seems to me that is an admission that it is part of the Constitution and will take another amendment, not a judge, to get rid of it.

Ah, but in his warped little mind, if those hippies in Congress don’t want to deal with it:

An executive order could specify to federal agencies that the children of noncitizens are not citizens.

Easy peasy.

After fucking over G7 and NATO, giving Putin a public knob-polishing on international TV, and trying to buy it back with a half-assed ‘clarification,’ people are starting to pay attention.

And that NYT story, along with the Mueller indictments and the arrest of the gunnypot, suggest that the intelligence community has finally had enough and have taken off the gloves.

This presidency is about to burn down to the water line. I’ll be happy to watch.

Yep. And it honestly goes back if you ask me to that shify little meeting that Ryan, McCarthy, and Cantor had the day Obama became President along with McConnell’s promise to make Obama a one termer. McConnell will be remembered as he wishes but not for the reasons he hopes. He’ll be remembered as an unethical scumbag who subverted democracy to protect his pathetic party from dying out. I think the GOP was devastated at losing the 2008 election to Obama. They knew that Obama’s election was going to bring about a new era for this country so they did everything possible to sabotage him including take him from Putin to attack him. It’s not a coincidence at all to me that Bulina was deeply connected with the parts of the right that have spoken the most glowingly about Putin the past decade. And I’m sure there are other men and women like her in right wing circles.

So maybe China will get a working Hyperloop first.

Turns out, the test track will not be very far from where I used to live. About 2 hours by (slow) train.

The route itself will be located somewhere in Tongren, a prefecture in eastern Guizhou, and will cover an initial distance of 10 km (6.2 miles). There’s no indication of if the line will connect two significant landmarks or areas, at least not at this early stage. At that short distance, it’s not likely that the tube will be able to reach the speeds that Hyperloop promises, at least on paper.

Foreign companies are obliged to create a Chinese branch and partner with Chinese companies to do business in China. Thereupon China will copy the technology and build Hyperloops all over the damn place, while claiming it was their tech all along.

I am almost too tired to move, so laters, all.

Birthright citizenship fosters patriotism. My grandaunts and uncles were mostly birthright citizens. All but two of the men served in WWII.

There is one tiny grain of validity in there. Germany grants birthright citizenship (as of 2000) to children born to legal resident parents. There are no Ankerbabys in Deutschland.

And here it is:

In the Wisconsin presidential race, Hillary:
won counties with all-paper ballots
Lost by 1-2% counties with a mix of paper-based systems and paperless machines
Lost by10-15% counties with just paperless voting machines

And Johnson? “He had a 36% approval rating in the leadup to the election.”

I think Wisconsin was at the heart of the shenanigans.

This is what I have been expecting and looking for. It explains a lot of very strange 2016 election things. I suspect that there will be more leaking out on this as time goes on.

My biggest concern is how much of this is going to happen in the midterms. I note that this would explain why the Republicans are doing everything that they can to ensure it will not be fixed by November.

Odie Hugh Manatee  Jul 18, 2018 • 11:15:32pm

I’ve been reading Redstate from 2004 because it’s been the place to get a fair sample of what’s the latest in conservative crazy. While it was pretty bad way back when, it’s morphed in to total shithole now. One of their leading dimbulbs, Streiff, uttered this total bullshit (regarding McFaul and diplomatic immunity):

This is the kind of smug elitism that drives me crazy. Just because he was a political appointee in a previous administration and not a terribly competent one, he is no more deserving of protection that that guy standing in line at WalMart in a MAGA hat. Perhaps less so. McFaul is the guy who was the architect of the policy that led to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. For my money, if the Russians ask to question John Brennan and James Clapper along with him, I’d duct tape all three to seats on the next flight to Moscow…but it isn’t going to happen.

So the short of it is that Streiff is blaming America for Russia invading the Ukraine and annexing the Crimea. Never mind his claim that he’s blaming one of Obama’s ambassadors because what he’s really saying is that it’s Americas fault for the Russians acting like they are. Then he tosses in the grenade that if he had it his way he would be sending Americans citizens to Russia, wrapped in duct tape. The comments are as bad as you expect, pretty much all in agreement that the Russians are better people than the fellow citizens that they refuse to try and get along with. What is mind-blowing is that we’ve reached the point where American citizens are cheering for a foreign power to tip power into their hands so they can have absolute control of our government.

He then goes on to say that McFaul won’t be handed over because he has diplomatic immunity and a variety of other reasons. Based on his statement above, it’s clear that Strieff doesn’t think diplomatic immunity or the variety of other reasons are a good thing. It also shows that he’s as stupid as a rotted stump because he clearly hasn’t thought about the idea that nobody sane would serve as an ambassador if things were his way. Next, Strieff shovels another load of bullshit:

Unfortunately, the exact same facts actually applies to the Russians Mueller has indicted. If McFaul is guilty of a “political crime” or has done something that is not “illegal” in the US, the same applies to the Russian GRU agents. The indictment of the 12 Russian intelligence officers for carrying out their national strategy while staying in their home country is actually more grotesque than the Russians accusing McFaul of being involved in criminal activities while US Ambassador and it exposes members of our own CIA/NSA/DIA cyber-operators to the same lawfare that Mueller has declared on the GRU.

He ends his steaming heap by saying that in the future when our agents are taken captive by Russia, it will be because of Muller’s actions. IOW, once again Strieff blames America. I’m not even going to bother to deconstruct or waste the time to refute the rest of this load of shit, all I can say is that it’s clear that this fuckchop is a full-on Russian sympathizer.

re: #30 Backwoods_Sleuth

I just read the Supreme Court decision on birthright citizenship of Wong Kim Ark. The decision was 6 to 2 in his favor.
I had read it before but had never read the dissenting Justices opinion. According to these 2 Justices Canadian Cruz would not have been eligible to become President.
In their dissent they said ………………………….

Pointing to the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, an act of Congress which declared to be citizens “all persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed”, and which was enacted into law only two months before the Fourteenth Amendment was proposed by Congress, the dissenters argued that “it is not open to reasonable doubt that the words ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof,’ in the amendment, were used as synonymous with the words ‘and not subject to any foreign power’”.[135][136] In the dissenters’ view, excessive reliance on jus soli (birthplace) as the principal determiner of citizenship would lead to an untenable state of affairs in which “the children of foreigners, happening to be born to them while passing through the country, whether of royal parentage or not, or whether of the Mongolian, Malay or other race, were eligible to the presidency, while children of our citizens, born abroad, were not.

In 1898 you can bet that these weren’t the only 2 Justices that believed that Natural Born citizen meant persons that were born in the United States.

Yes, but what kills me is the idea that there might not have been massive violence bordering on civil war if he’d tried to void the election results. There would have been swift, certain and massive civil unrest and Obama would have been directly viewed as responsible for it all. He would have quickly lost, been deposed by his own military and probably tried and killed as a would by tyrant. The entire narrative would have changed, there would be nothing equivalent to the Mueller investigation and everything Obama said about Russian involvement would have been dismissed as the self serving confabulation of a would be dictator who had desired to be President for Life.

It’s just naive as fuck to think Obama had any choice at all. What these two are suggesting would have turned Trump into our Erdogan, every paranoid impulse and evil policy enacted with no checks or balances at all because he’d have the justification needed to enact a total purge of all his perceived enemies from the government.

Proof-of-life post. Tonight and tomorrow night we will be staying in Haines Junction, Yukon.

Cheechako: We catch the ferry from Skagaway to Juneau on July 20. We will check into the Alaska Hotel after we disembark from the ferry and drive to town.

My wife and I spent the day touring Whitehorse. We ran into the same couple from Germany who took our picture together at the second “Welcome to Yukon” sign on BC-97/YK-1.

We also toured the SS Klondike, now a National Historic Monument. The ship plied the river between Whitehorse and Dawson City for decades.

Tomorrow (well, later today since it’s after midnight and the sun just went down) we will go to Kluane National Park outside of Haines Junction.

Proof-of-Life Photo in Yukon

I think I will write a photo article when I am done with this trip (if I come back to the USA at all - asylum is looking better, and Canada’s Prime Minister yesterday appointed a cabinet minister to deal with USA refugees according to CBC).

And the idea of “voiding the election” up there? There is no constitutional mechanism for voiding an election.

A person shown to be illegitimately elected can only be removed by impeachment, die in office, or be voted out in the next election.

The first isn’t happening while conservatives maintain their grip on power for its own sake, the second is unlikely, and the third … we’ll have to see.

Israel’s parliament on Thursday adopted a law defining the country as the nation-state of the Jewish people, provoking fears it will lead to blatant discrimination against its Palestinian citizens.

The legislation, adopted by 62 votes to 55, makes Hebrew the country’s national language and defines the establishment of Jewish communities as being in the national interest.

The bill also strips Arabic of its designation as an official language, downgrading it to a “special status” that enables its continued use within Israeli institutions.

A year or so ago, he changed his tune & became to Trump what Trump is to Putin. I think they found something bad on him, really bad, like dead choir boy or something like that. Otherwise it makes no sense.

Y’know, for a seriously conservative South Carolinian of his age… I’m thinking even an age-appropriate live man would freak him out this much. Maybe his boyfriend is married?

There is one tiny grain of validity in there. Germany grants birthright citizenship (as of 2000) to children born to legal resident parents. There are no Ankerbabys in Deutschland.

TBH what we’ve been doing for years works. Why change it because some Trump adviser doesn’t like it. I think we do a better job than most integrating immigrants into society.

Agreed. What really pisses me off about otherwise smart people even entertaining the idea that we should lay some level of blame for Trump on Obama is that it’s goddamned useless, lazy, and whether intentional or subconscious it ultimately seeks to absolve the majority of white Americans of being so fucking racist, sexist, ignorant and utterly mendacious that collectively we voted for an abject and overt monster. It shouldn’t have even been close, and yet it was, entirely because of us.

Yes this is ultimately the underlying problem; half the country, maybe more, is just batshit insane. DJT makes this worse, encourages it, but the Faux news, talk radio crowd of gubers would have been in the streets for the past two years if HRC had been elected. So we seem destined for one type of crazy or another.

Turns out, the test track will not be very far from where I used to live. About 2 hours by (slow) train.

Foreign companies are obliged to create a Chinese branch and partner with Chinese companies to do business in China. Thereupon China will copy the technology and build Hyperloops all over the damn place, while claiming it was their tech all along.

You either get to do it in China, or get it blocked in the US. It used to be that you came here to do innovation, but these days, it might save the environment and change people’s driving habits.

They’re losing control of the narrative at this point. Spontaneous protests are popping up all over the country, the media has begun to push back, and the intelligence community has clearly had enough of Trump’s bullshit.

They can either go into bunker mode and try to ignore the increasingly obvious, or Trump can pull some kind of idiotic power play to prove he’s the boss. I have zero idea of which way they’ll lurch at this point.

But if another shoe drops by tomorrow, it’s almost a guarantee that they’ll do something really stupid.

I couldn’t agree more! As i wrote the other day, Trump is the symptom, not the cause. There is a cancer growing (again) in many western democracies, but it metastasized in 2016 in the US.

You also were also laying some blame on Obama for not coming out and leading the opposition which you might see as different from what you’re agreeing with Frank on, but I don’t. It carries all the same implications and prompted a few of us to wonder why you weren’t asking the same of the other ex POTUS or focusing on the GOP congress who can start to stop this at any moment.

Rand Fucking Paul. Tucker Fucking Carlson.

These fuckers think Trump should realign our alliances and allies - from NATO and EU to Russia.

Why the fuck should we do that? Objectively, why should we do this? Russia’s economy isn’t even the size of New York’s. They have nukes and that’s the only reason that they aren’t a developing world country in most every other respect. They are an empty shell - lots of military hardware, but little else to show for it.

And there’s the not insignificant fact that Russia attacked the US in 2016 and continues attacking the US to this day in cyberwarfare to destabilize and affect the outcome of elections.

That’s who Paul, Carson, and Trump sycophants want us to ally with?

End 70+ years of strategic partnership with NATO countries who have stood by us and fought and died by our side after 9/11 when the US called on Article 5 to assist in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the GWOT generally. They sacrificed blood and treasure to help us protect ourselves against a terror threat, but Trump thinks we need to change sides to the regime that attacks the US and EU countries to affect outcomes of elections to benefit Putin’s Russia?

The Beluga is more or less an Airbus with a hugely over-size upper fuselage for very large but relatively lightweight loads. It was designed mainly to transport complete fuselage sections from one Airbus plant to another. It is basically a modern successor to the Boeing-based Guppy series produced in the 60s. The latter were intended to transport rocket stages for the US space program but found many other kinds of employment, including with Airbus until the Belugas were developed. This led to the quip that “every Airbus is born in a Boeing.”

Rare view of Beluga giving birth to a litter of A-320 fuselage sections:

They are absolutely correct. With the exception of Germany, I’m descended from people who came from small nations. In fact, Germany has 8 times as much people as Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ireland do combined. I dunno. I always fancied myself a supporter of the little guy and were I in the Armed Forces and Montenegro invaded, I’d help her out gladly. That nation has had our back. One of my prized graduation presents was a little note by my cousin’s then 5 year old daughter regretting they couldn’t make my graduation party. I’ll always remember that kindness. It’s the same thing with the smaller countries in NATO. Trump has never actually paid attention to policy let alone foreign affairs and he doesn’t know a thing about the Balkans history.Trump and Tucker can both go fuck themselves for shitting on Montenegro the way they did. Montenegro is actually a friend unlike Trump’s stupid pal Vlad.

So, my question this morning, after the NYT report, is does the administration try to ride this out, or do they escalate in some manner?

They’re losing control of the narrative at this point. Spontaneous protests are popping up all over the country, the media has begun to push back, and the intelligence community has clearly had enough of Trump’s bullshit.

They can either go into bunker mode and try to ignore the increasingly obvious, or Trump can pull some kind of idiotic power play to prove he’s the boss. I have zero idea of which way they’ll lurch at this point.

But if another shoe drops by tomorrow, it’s almost a guarantee that they’ll do something really stupid.

I think the Trump admin is going to just muddle along until something big happens. I doubt his own cabinet and staff are all that interested in backing Trump to any extreme. I think many are probably studying their way out before they even reach the two years in point when many staff members bug out.

It all comes down to Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. That is where the pressure needs to be applied. Especially McConnell. If he decides to jettison Trump Ryan will tag along, he’s looking to get out of Washington in one piece at the end of the year. Mitch needs to be scared that he is going to pay a big price for his own cover-up.

Right. Man that’s scary. Good news though is my right wing friend has been berry berry quiet lately on social media. Maybe he’s realizing he doesn’t know politics from Ben Shapiro’s smug face.

I have to say reading this Nixon biography. I actually have a lot of respect for Pre-Southern Strategy Nixon in some ways even if a lot of stuff he did I think he was shady as hell like implying the incumbent Congressman he beat to win Congress was a Communist sympathizer but other stuff like accepting a NAACP honorary membership in SoCal while the KKK was still big in Southern California was pretty honorable and he seemed genuinely appalled by Jim Crow that he witnessed as a law student at Duke in Durham, NC. Nixon was an asshole for sure but I easily have more respect for him than Trump already upon reading this.

I’ve kind of hit a wall in my reading, particularly of American History, which I normally love so much.

I’ve turned to reading some British history, reread a biography of Elizabeth I who I find really fascinating. Also read about the British counter intelligence official who turned out to have been a Soviet spy for decades—Kim Philby. That was a really good book.

But it might take some time, some recovery from the loon in WH for my love of American history to return. I hope it comes back.

I’m thinking Please Kill Me, the oral history of punk might be good. I usually do one print book and one audible. I’ve got Nixon on Audible and The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe in print. re: #473 Sir John Barron

Hmmm, what’s that?

Basically the premise is this East Germany border guard is sent deep undercover in the West as an aide de camp to a prominent Western German general. They give him a cover for someone they’ve previously killed and it’s complicated by the fact that he has a girlfriend back home and his mother needs a transplant and will be moved to the top of the list if he does this job but since he’s not trained as an agent, he does make some mistakes. I think it’s very good because the three sides shown so far: Americans, West Germans, and East Germans are all shown as real people. The East Germans genuinely fear Reagan’s rhetoric and starting WWIII. The West Germans worry about Reagan putting missiles in their soil. The general has one scene where he tells his American counterpart that it’s easy for Reagan to talk about the “Evil Empire” when he’s 3500 miles away. The American general is sympathetic to the West German concerns but also toes the national line about not wanting to display weakness to the East. Have you got Hulu? It’s on there. It’s one of the more brilliant shows I’ve seen.

I actually didn’t realize that. But yeah the East Germans seem genuinely worried about a pre-emptive strike. I’m glad this is German. If it were American made, I’d worry that it would make them too unsympathetic and distant, ironic since they’d be speaking English and I’d be able to understand them more word for word but since it’s in German, which I do not speak, I get to hear them express their concerns as a German actually would. I mean they’re still ruthless.

The people who call the French that shit are the same people in mindset anyhow who felt we didn’t need to get involved with “another European war” in 1938. I don’t blame the isolationist sentiment at that time nor do I do those who wanted us to stop Hitler but I certainly do blame those who throw that crap at the French and crap on Chamberlain with hindsight bias and Churchilliean propaganda.

Yeah, WWI left Britain and France (and Russia) exhausted and Germany angry.

Remember that you only got half their DNA from your parents (and they from theirs and so on). So the presence of particular “ethnic” DNA is evidence, its absence really proves nothing, particularly if you’re looking for something several generations back.

Absolutely. I’m considerably less Irish than my Dad was in our results. They even guesstimated correctly where in Ireland that Dad’s family was from but for me, I was only 11%.

It was made into a film starring Anthony Quinn. I never saw it.

We made a pig’s breakfast of Vietnam siding with the wrong people, when the whole thing could have been solved better. (Unlike Algeria’ which was a rat’s nest.) Ho saw communism as the path to freedom but it didn’t have to be. WWII had provided a break in French political control, which could have been continued as long as economic relations were preserved, as it happened in Africa. Read an article about her and the National Prayer Breakfast and how the NPB has become a place to get connected to those in power, which seemed particularly ironic for a humble, prayer based enterprise to turn into.

The NPB is apparently a thing with the Fellowship, AKA the Family. Sessions and Pence are supposedly members. These folks think that the whole bible is being read wrong and Jesus didn’t give a shit about the poor, Jesus was actually a strong mane and Putin and Trump are the new Jesus. They want to inflict their theocracy on the US where their brand of Jesus is the only brand.

I read an interview with Jeff Shallot (sic?? whose father was one of them) last night.

Exactly. We have so much benefits of hindsight now. TBH, as much as I like JFK, I am a little bothered that he wrote his thesis called “Why England Slept” while his own father was a staunch isolationist and pushed isolationism as ambassador.

re: #502 Jay C

I’ll second that. Shirer’s tome on Nazi Germany was an insightful memoir by someone who was there: his book about the Fall of France is something else, though: a thorough and comprehensive history.
And, while it doesn’t excuse French mistakes - military OR political - in the lead up to, and the early battles of WWII ( and they were beaucoup) - it puts a serious dent in the “cheese-eating surrender-monkeys” myth. Definitely a worthwhile read.

Note that it is our alt.right of the day that hated the Popular Front (elected in 36) so much that they virtually delivered France to Herr Hitler. Sounds familiar?

I don’t think you really understand the situation Obama was in and the dynamics of him being our first Black president…the amount of hate and suspicion.

The bigotry in this country kept him bottled up in many ways. It allowed Mitch McConnell to use it to stop him at many a turn. It figured into his decisions about the election.

And just think of the dynamics of the guy seeing the end of his term coming…he was actually getting out alive (not to be dismissed easily) and the relief to come with the end and then wham…Russia.

You could say that Obama being president brought about Trump as much, maybe even more than your other reasons.

re: #547 A hollow voice says, Covfefe.

WTF?

Meaning, unfortunately nothing he could use, call on or rely upon reliably, to effect a change.

Let’s use a real-life scenario, that of the last French Presidential election.

In addition to Russian phishing, there were three purely French factors that might have affected our election: (a) the so-called “PenelopeGate” affair that impacted the major right-wing party leader, (b) a foiled terrorist attack in Marseille, and finally (c) the terrorist attack perpetrated on the Champs-Elysees the week before the voting.

Prior to the election, a postponement of the voting was discussed publicly by the outgoing Government.

Post-election, a possible annulment of the ballots was also discussed, but that is possible only in case of manifest, proven fraud. What prompted the discussion was that it was learned that more than 500,000 voters had received duplicate electoral cards, raising fears of fraud. But in the end there was no evidence to that effect.

In cases of proven fraud (eg: ballot stuffing, defamatory propaganda or dissemination of material after the official closure of the campaign), the case law requires that an election be canceled, or the results modified, if the fraud found had the effect of moving a sufficient number of votes to distort the results, but only in the voting bureau(s) impacted, not nationally.

Also, and most importantly, it takes place against the backdrop of the Able Archer ‘83 NATO exercise, which apparently freaked the Kremlin right the hell out.

Quite a few of the USSR’s leadership were of the opinion that Able Archer ‘83 was a ruse of war and a cover for a pre-emptive NATO attack on the Warsaw Pact, or so the story goes.

In season 1 of The Americans is the episode when Hinkley shoots Reagan. The Soviets at the embassy, and the spies’ bosses at The Centre, are convinced they’re going to be framed for it, that it’s the opening move in Alexander Haig’s military coup. One of the back-home spy bosses thinks it really was the Soviets, that somebody from another department ordered it and why wasn’t he informed.

Philip and Elizabeth are ordered to kill Schultz and a couple of other people to take advantage of the distraction and start WWIII; Philip puts his marriage/job/partnership in jeopardy by insisting it isn’t them and they shouldn’t do it. (it turns out to be a very good and useful thing they’re friends with the FBI counter-intel guy next door, they find out and report back 12 hours before it was in the news that it was some wacky crazy kid and nothing to do with the Russians.)

Also Nina, a secretary at the Ambassador’s office, goes to a bar where congressional aides and low-level staffers from cabinet departments hang out, is able to report back to the Rezident that it’s unconnected and they should take no action. Nina gets a few good storylines of her own in later seasons.

And that my friends is how the GOP/Fox crowd makes this about something other than the Trump-Russia. They point to Bernie and the fringe left. It wasn’t us - it was them.

Never let them get away with that since we’re talking about Manafort’s trial and that Manafort was working for Trump when he engaged in criminal misconduct that if found guilty by a jury would mean 100s of years in prison.

Manafort was working by and for Trump. He was furthering Trump’s interests.

re: #485 HappyWarrior

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Sessions said Congress has fully funded election assistance grants that were created under the Help America Vote Act passed in the wake of the contested 2000 election. He said states still have money left from this year’s $380 million appropriation—and that lawmakers have not been made aware of any outstanding needs as the November midterm elections approach.

And the military unit that allegedly carried out the distribution of the stolen information through WikiLeaks and anonymous social-media accounts is based at the same address as GRU officer Oleg Ivannikov (known as Orion), who has been named by the independent Bellingcat research organization as a participant in the events that led to the July 2014 downing of the MH-17 passenger jet over eastern Ukraine.

Hey one more piece of evidence that your Constitution is a dimwit document, hopelessly outdated. Thank you!

A bit of history and context on throwing out the Constitution…

There is a recurring thread in right wing and libertarian circles that the Constitution is outdated and needs to be replaced. The mechanism proposed for this is called a Constitutional Convention.

I believe that the last time this actually was attempted was in 1861 by Southern slavers who invoked such a Constitutional Convention to give cover for their secession.

Beyond the fact that this attempt did not go well for the perpetrators, there is a historical context that such calls often come from the far right for far right goals and agenda.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time….’

661
KerFuFFler  Jul 19, 2018 • 10:21:36am

Most thinking people already understand that Trump is lying when he said that he had misspoken in Helsinki. But from the context of Trump’s speech it is clear that when he said “would”, he meant it, not the “wouldn’t” he claimed the following day. Here’s the logic:

In that same speech Trump declared that Putin had made “an incredible offer. He offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators, with respect to the 12 people. I think that’s an incredible offer.” So, if Trump believed American intelligence sources that Putin had meddled in the election, why would he think American law enforcement would want the criminal (Putin) to help conduct the investigation? The only thing incredible about that offer is that anyone would be dumb enough to think that would be helpful rather than harmful to the investigation.

He more or less has to, but he is probably hoping his boys shoot it down…even if they have to actually put their names to the vote.

The Republican congress is running out of tricks that do not prove they are obstructing and colluding with Trump and the Russians.

But they will continue to be the un-American asses they are because they really have no choice now. All in and with no where to go.

They have their base and that is it. They are getting hated by everyone else.

Does this mean that the republicans understand the disaster it would be for them if they were to do this; turn over an American ambassador to a hostile foreign country?

Or will they just vote it down, too?

no idea.
I’m just amazed that McConnell is letting it come up for a vote.

Well, even though I’ve been thinking that the whole McFaul flap is fundamentally Theater For The Absurd; it’s unlikely that Congressional Republicans would even see blocking the Con. Res as a “disaster” - they probably don’t think Trump would do it anyway, and, as we’ve repeatedly seen - for years - fundamentally don’t give a flying f*ck what anything looks like: as long as they depend on their Toady Media to deflect, obfuscate or lie. And they usually do.

And as for McConnell: it’s a cheap piece of good PR: taking a legislative stand against a hugely unpopular *suggestion* by the “President”? Real Profile in Courage, there….

PS: I’m just guessing that the notion of handing over US officials to Russia is in fact, “hugely unpopular” - not that Congressional GOP would care, anyway. Any polling out on this idea?

Fucker’s just lashing out blindly now: Trump Attacks Federal Reserve Over Interest Rate Hikes

In an extraordinarily rare move by a sitting president, Donald Trump criticized the Federal Reserve Thursday for raising interest rates and expressed his fear that it would jeopardize economic growth, according to CNBC.

In response to a growing economy and substantive stock market gains under Trump, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates twice in the last year, and had indicated that they will do so twice more. “I’m not thrilled,” Trump told CNBC’s Joe Kernen during a taped interview. “Because we go up and every time you go up they want to raise rates again. I don’t really—I am not happy about it. But at the same time I’m letting them do what they feel is best.”

As CNBC notes, it is “historically rare” for a sitting president to criticize the Federal Reserve, which is intentionally independent from the president’s jurisdiction. Trump appeared unperturbed by this break from tradition, noting that “I’m just saying the same thing that I would have said as a private citizen. So somebody would say, ‘Oh, maybe you shouldn’t say that as president.’ I couldn’t care less what they say, because my views haven’t changed.”

Others disagree, however. The former president of the Dallas fed told CNBC that “One of the hallmarks of our great American economy is preserving the independence of the Federal Reserve. No president should interfere…Were I Chairman Powell, I would ignore the President and do my job and I am confident he will do just that.”

The 8 digits is the number the auto-generator is at. There are plenty of troll and bot accounts with less than 8 random digits in their names. And there are also real users with every number of random digits at the end of their name because they just used the auto-suggested name option that Twitter provided.

Thursday, in an interview with CNBC, Trump expressed his frustration with the U.S. Central bank saying that he is “not thrilled” with rising interest rates. He added that higher interest rates could disrupt the nation’s economic recovery.

“I don’t like all of this work that we’re putting into the economy and then I see rates going up,” he said in the interview.

“Because we go up and every time you go up they want to raise rates again. I don’t really — I am not happy about it. However, at the same time, I’m letting them do what they feel is best.”

Trump Cult Followers are such wonderful people.

Are you just assuming he is a Trump follower? Racism may be more prevalent in the GOP, but the democratic party certainly isn’t immune. The most racist assholes I ever met were when I was working construction. Those guys were racist AF and all good union Dem voters.

I didn’t see any mention of Trump, or party in the video.

LIVE: Senators vote on Russia resolution

cnn.com

They certainly seem to be taking their time about it, though:I called up the CNN livefeed, and all I see is a mostly-empty Chamber, and about 20 Senators or so milling around chatting while the pages sit around bored

This resolution has passed via majority. I’ll be damned.

I really think there are those at FNC that wanted her to be President so they could complain rather than have to defend Trump’s policies. Frankly, probably not that different from that part of the left that did little to help her win because they’d rather bitch.

Their ratings would be better if she’d been elected. And MSNBCs would be worse.

Still tallying. I haven’t heard a single no vote yet.

Word must have come down from the top to let Rs look good on this one.

No doubt, Trump will tweet that he was against the idea all along.

He’s already sort-of done that: a recent blurb (within the hour) said Trump’s *now* against the idea of sending US officials to Russia.
Bold stance, there, Donald…..

The Russians are going to keep trickling this stuff out for weeks, and there is probably no one in the US government who has any idea what actually happened.

Including Trump.

But we can be sure Vlad will tell him.

re: #129 Ace-o-aces

The usual dipshits that we mock and pity here are totally cool with Russian meddling because they think it’ll help make American white and bigoted again.

On Wednesday morning, in the midst of yet another contentious news cycle dominated by coverage of Russian election meddling, I tweeted a kind of thought experiment: “If Trump & co. just pivoted to ‘Aren’t you glad Russia helped us defeat Hillary Clinton?’ would there be any serious blowback from his base?”

The question was rhetorical. The answers that began trickling in were not.

“No,” said Cassandra Fairbanks, a writer at the right-wing news and conspiracy website Gateway Pundit (and a former Sputnik employee). “I mean, I would be cool with it. I’m already there. If Russia was involved we should thank them.”

“No,” responded another self-identified Trump voter. “Hillary is a greater threat to our Republic.”

Several people pointed me to Jacob Wohl, a Trump booster with a large Twitter following, who had mused just hours earlier, “If Russia assists MAGA Candidates on the internet in this year’s midterms, that’s not the end of the world.” And others re-upped a C-SPAN clip from the day before in which a caller identified as Mary Lou from Connecticut said, “I’ll try not to sound too awful, but I want to thank the Russians for interfering with our election to stop Hillary Clinton from becoming president. That woman has got illusions of grandeur.”

People who aren’t racist may not be a big enough group to effect change, so it’s good that we promote workers rights and women’s rights, and will draw support from people who will overlook our non-racism because we help them too.
