How Twitter Collaborates With Neo-Nazis

The old problem.
Politics • Views: 44,983

I was suspended on Twitter a few days ago for calling a neo-Nazi Holocaust denier a nutjob.

Here’s how it happened.

The guy was harassing people around and spreading Holocaust denial. As a very typical example, here are his tweets harassing a Jewish woman and people confronting him (all reported, of course):

Here are his tweets against blacks:

His attitude towards the Holocaust in 1 tweet:
Indeed, if you look at his timeline, he is obsessed with Jews, blacks and the “holohoax”.

I confronted the said neo-Nazi and of course debunked all his lies about the Holocaust with facts, which was easy to do given his absolute ignorance. In fact, he was even forced to publicly express doubt that Mao and Stalin were responsible for millions of victims (otherwise he could not maintain his dismissal of the Holocaust under pretense of demanding “forensic evidence” of millions of bodies, which he would not have been able to present for those two dictators too), so he very fairly got called a nutjob. Someone who seriously doubts that Mao, Stalin and Hitler are responsible for millions of deaths gotta be a nutjob, right?

After he was shadowbanned for spamming, he changed his profile pic to that of a black man to present my tweets calling him out as racist attacks, in the hope of finding some dumb Twitter moderator who would react to this primitive ruse. Ironically, his trick did not work, but I still got suspended. Here’s the email I got from Twitter:

As you see, I was suspended for merely reacting to a Holocaust-denying neo-Nazi’s vile spam by calling him a nutjob.

That’s it. I called a neo-Nazi who was engaging in a targeted harassment of people all around Twitter (including myself) a nutjob several times and got suspended.

And there has been zero reaction from Twitter to the said neo-Nazi’s actual, real antisemitic/racist harassment of the Twitter users. As of the time of this writing he still hasn’t been suspended.

End result:

  • a neo-Nazi who spews rivers of racist abuse and Holocaust denial is free to continue to spread his filth and lies on Twitter;
  • the person who merely confronted his abuse got suspended without any good reason.

It is hard to escape the conclusion that Twitter collaborates with the Holocaust-denying neo-Nazis.

Sergey,

Got any ideas how you think social platforms like Twitter and Facebook can be brought to have to make the needed changes?

Both platforms have become so popular I don’t see how they can think they need to change anything.

Outside of a mass protest of a major percentage of their users quitting their service why would they ever change?

And if that is the case, they really are not helping socially, they are breaking it down. At least it sure seems that way.

I don’t think I saw that article when first published.

Sure helps to explain why Facebook might have been eager to help the Trump campaign.

I understand the whole concept of social media. I also understand how humans can be to each other. The concept meets a tough foe in reality.

There are going to be people who equivocate this by saying, “Well, if Sergey hadn’t called him names, he wouldn’t have gotten suspended.” Bullshit. This neo-Nazi is being blatantly offensive and is saying a lot worse stuff than “nutjob”. There is no way you can justify suspending someone telling off a Nazi by using a word as mild as “nutjob”.

Yeah, but as far as I’m concerned, you don’t get permabanned for calling a guy some nasty names, doubly so for a Nazi, but even anyone else I would have said at most a 24-hour timeout.

There’s also another dilemma with battling HD on twitter.
If 100 deniers post a link to the same BS, they are not spamming.
If you post 100 responses with a link to a refutation of their BS, you are spamming.

Part of the problem Mom is it is 2018.

People are forgetting, denying, ignoring a lot of things that were bad are ready to try to relive them all again just to, you know, “see things a different way.”

And I know you are big on the lack of education about our past history, civics, government, etc.

Time adds distance…so in a way it never happened to so many. Not in their lives.

I realize there’s an urge to avoid making Pence the president, but we prove that we follow the rule-of-law by following the law. Pence isn’t innocent, and busting Trump would make future presidents take notice.

I’m just wondering how really “terrifying” that “holy terror waiting in the wings” is likely to be dealing with a Democratic Congress: and one, moreover, which might find the chops to actually remove the Orange Hemorrhoid from the Anal Office. Not the House, of course, which with a Dem Majority would probably impeach Trump between coffee breaks - but the Senate, whose votes in the “trial” phase are what counts in an impeachment.
A President Pence with a Democratic Congress would (obviously) be far from an optimal situation, but then, nearly anything would be better than the incumbent. Low bar, etc……

Oh, very aware of that being an Ohioan. Sadly John Glenn sullied his name a bit in all that too. Bad times.

Exactly. It’s almost like it was planned as a gag.

Hmmm. Maybe Vlad picked up on it with his following American media. And waited for Trump to do his thing and Vlad jumped in.

Funny as hell.

Oh my!

Is this Chuck C’s cousin?

A superintendent in New Jersey, accused of publicly defecating on a local high school’s track and football field, has resigned from his job.

Thomas Tramaglini, 42, resigned as superintendent for the Kenilworth School District on Thursday night, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.

The allegations received national attention, and especially punny journalists dubbed Tramaglini the “Pooperintendent.”

Here in Europe, Twitter would find themselves in some very serious shit for allowing Holocaust deniers to post on their platform.

Promotion of Holocaust denial is a serious crime in many EU countries.

I get that “burden of proof” is a difficult concept for those who aren’t well-versed in formal logic, but you don’t have to show your ignorance by compounding it with stupid spelling.

Shadowbanning is of course real, I’ve been sbanned several times.

Twitter’s most recent statement on this says they only remove usernames from the auto-suggest feature of their search function, but if you type the full name it still shows up.

With Jason here, his name never shows up at all even if you type the full username, and his tweets don’t show in conversation threads. But you can go directly to his timeline page and he’s obviously still spewing.

So it would seem Twitter’s not being completely forthright with the public.

If Betsy DeVos gave five LGF members each a yacht, she’d still have five yachts.

Swamp math.

Why the fuck does someone need TEN Yachts anyway?

Just to say: “Look how fucking rich I am you lowly peasants!” or something?

Even if I had bucks to spare I can’t imagine myself owning more than 2 Yachts.

It’s just a conspicuous and vomitous consumption of resources. And I am sure they are available for lease/rental to offset the fixed costs. But still, it’s obscene wealth trolling.

I realize there’s an urge to avoid making Pence the president, but we prove that we follow the rule-of-law by following the law. Pence isn’t innocent, and busting Trump would make future presidents take notice.

If Cohen’s alleged potential testimony is true, that Donald knew about the Trump Tower meeting before it happened, and that there were several people in the room, I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that Pence knew as well. I’m also willing to bet that he’s been involved in some aspects of the post inauguration obstruction of justice.

If the evidence is really there, impeach them both. Maybe we don’t get enough votes to convict both of them, but if Pence becomes POTUS having already been impeached as Veep (and obviously assuming Democratic majorities in Congress), he’s going to be a lame duck from the moment he says “so help me God.” Particularly with a Democratic Congress, he’s not going to be able to get anything done. And 2020 would likely turn into a GOP civil war with the Trumpers looking for someone even crazier and whatever is left of the establishment looking for something that vaguely resembles normalcy. It will be fucking spectacular.

An aside: We should also have some sort of discussion about what the role of the VPOTUS should be in our system. Given how the world functions today, the Vice President should probably do more than call the White House each morning to check on the President’s health and cast the occasional tie breaking vote. I’d also prefer the Vice President to be a bit more independent, but given the way the party nominating systems work today and how the States chose/bind electors, I’m not sure how exactly we do that.

I dunno, assuming she’s paying the taxes, and paying the crews/captains reasonable wages, and paying reasonable costs for the services listed, I think I’d actually prefer that over the money otherwise sitting in some hedge fund looking to gut boat builders by offering capital investments and leaving them over leveraged.

New Tax Law Means Substantial Savings Opportunities for Boat Buyers

Your Next New or Pre-Owned Boat Purchase Could be a Complete Tax Write Off!

134
Amory Blaine  Jul 28, 2018 • 5:09:46pm

If you have, or are interested in, a boat-based business but have been on the fence about your next purchase, it’s time to quit procrastinating and find the next yacht for your operation. In the 2018 tax legislation, there are new provisions which could provide substantial federal tax benefits to purchasers of boats, both new and pre-owned, through 2022. Bluewater Partner, Dan Reitz helps break down the new tax code so it’s easily digestible.

To qualify for these benefits, the buyer must be an entity (corporation, partnership or LLC) that will rent or charter the vessel or use it for another legitimate business purpose. So long as that requirement is met, then 100% of the purchase price can be written off as “bonus depreciation” in the year of the purchase.

Scare-mongering over consumer DNA tests is really something, but not surprising given how complex a consumer product they are.

Anyway, yesterday stories were all popping:

DNA-testing company 23andMe has signed a $300 million deal with a drug giant. Here’s how to delete your data if that freaks you out.

23andMe Is Sharing Genetic Data with Drug Giant

The thing is, 23andMe has always been upfront, from the very founding of the company, that the way they would make money is by making their data available to people who would want to use it for research, including for-profit companies like drug companies.

This is not news.

Yet outlets - and the second link is from Scientific American, who should know better - act like this is some big news item.

What is at work here is what we see with Trump, and indeed most all political posturing - make your crowd feel like they are losing something.

Revanchism is the term for this phenomenon when directed towards nationalism, but the idea of making someone resent some other entity for allegedly stealing something is such an old play in the playbook, but it works so readily so of course it is used over and over.

Still in Kamloops. Getting ready to ride a train.

My lawyer E-mailed today to say our electricity should be back on at our house as soon as it is inspected, probably in a day or two.

Reading through Sergey’s story of being banned for calling out a Nazi on Twitter while the Nazi still has an account fits right in with what I think about Twitter and Facebook and why I do not have accounts at either company.

At this point, those who keep saying “Well I need my Facebook account to keep up with my family/friends/dog/stock portfolio/whatever” are more and more simply supporting a Nazi platform. (We still have a post office and telephone service; there are other ways to keep up with your dog or family and friends.)

There is only one thing a libertarian understands (not very well): Money. Twitter is rapidly becoming no different than gab (dot) ai.

So, while Bernie and Alexandria are “headlining” all across the country, here’s the real deal (bolding mine):

…just one-sixth of Democratic primary winners so far are affiliated with key progressive insurgent groups like Justice Democrats or Our Revolution - and many of them come from seats Democrats have little chance of winning in November. Of the swing-district candidates the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has put on its Red-to-Blue list, just two have lost to progressive challengers…

And Welder, the guy they’re pushing in Kansas, has his facts all backasswards:

He noted thousands of voters in Kansas and millions of voters nationwide who backed Trump after supporting President Barack Obama four or eight years earlier…”But the Democrats can win back these working-class Trump voters.”

There’s one problem: The 3rd District isn’t full of Obama-Trump voters. It’s full of their political opposite, voters who backed GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012 and then supported Democrat Hillary Clinton four years later. Romney had won the district by 10 percentage points, then Clinton won by a single point four years later.

And the kicker?

This points to the second problem for progressives: Many of them are winning Democratic primaries in districts Democrats have little chance of winning in November. One in four progressive primary winners is running in a district with a partisan voter index greater than R +15, which means Republicans have won the past two presidential elections in the district by an average of 15 points. Among candidates whom the Sanders-backed Our Revolution have endorsed in GOP-held districts, just two have won primaries in districts with a PVI less than R +10.

huffingtonpost.com

Good article—wish I could get some of this through the heads of the noisy afterBerners around here who are STILL bitching and moaning about their House candidate who lost the primary and who think anyone who disagrees with anything they say is a corporate, establishment shill who doesn’t deserve any voice at all.

I started reading the new Nora Roberts novel Year Zero. She usually writes light fluffy romance but this book is darker than shit. It’s very similar to Joe Hill’s book The Fireman.

Do you mean Year One? I can’t find a book by her called Year Zero?

Alexander, Khan, the British, and the Russians were all trying to conquer it and make it part of their empires. I don’t think that was the plan when we went in. The problem when we went in to Afghanistan, much like with Iraq, is that we thought it would be a couple of years and then we could go home. But that’s not how shit works post WWII. We have to stay, we have to be engaged, we have to do real, actual nation building. That was the lesson of WWII. It’s why we haven’t had to fight another war in the Pacific, it’s why we haven’t had to fight another war in Europe. But they had no plan to win the peace, as they say, so the fighting just continued. It doesn’t help that the Bush Administration probably picked the wrong horses for the post war order in both Iraq and Afghanistan, either.

Simple explanation, they used the NRA as the open door to all those Republicans. Why? Because they wanted to change the Republican’s historic view of Russia.

Isikoff started to follow her because she turned up at all the GOP events and was getting a lot of attention.

Interesting this all happened at about the same time Manafort was getting the RNC platform changed to be softer on Russia.

Amazing how a historic stance against Russia can go away just like that. Just took some Russian money through the NRA and all the past was forgotten.

It was never about country with them; it was always about power.

Brexit scare stories are popping up all over the place. I don’t know how well founded some of them are, but as the time nears for the “exit”, there will be chaos.

People act like the UK gov’t has until March to sort things out, but that is not true. The EU countries expect to have a worked out proposal by fall, so they can debate on it and vote on it each.

On top of that, business have to plan, at least a few quarters ahead, and it is beginning to appear as if corporations around the world are putting Brexit-risk discussions in their financial disclosures.

Example:

No-deal Brexit would cause severe dairy shortages in UK

Tighter supplies and significant price hikes for dairy staples such as butter, cheese and yoghurt have been forecast for Britain if the country crashes out of the EU next March.

A London School of Economics (LSE) report, which was commissioned by the dairy processor Arla Foods, has warned that the UK will face severe dairy shortages if a Brexit deal is not secured.

mmmirele  Jul 29, 2018 • 8:49:59am

There is a practice in the Mormon church of the bishop (like a pastor) of a ward (like a congregation) interviewing the youth behind closed doors at least yearly, starting just before the child turns eight. The problem is that it’s a one-on-one interview and there is no parent or guardian there to protect the child/teenager from inappropriate questions. And yes, there have been inappropriate questions! That’s because the bishop is considered a “judge in Israel” and can pretty much ask about anything to determine a person’s worthiness.

Sam Young is a businessman and former bishop from Houston. Apparently he was a by the book guy when he was bishop and had no idea that some of his six daughters were being asked sexually explicit questions by their bishop. Last year he started an initiative, Protect LDS Children, to push for the practice of one-on-one interviews to stop. He also began collecting the accounts of what happened, which you can read here:

protectldschildren.org

He also sponsored a protest march in Salt Lake City on March 30 to try and push the Church leadership to back off from this practice, but not much at all has happened. Sam keeps emphasizing that the Mormon church is the only church which mandates these kinds of one-on-one interviews, that the interviews are done by guys who do not have special training (for example, Sam, who served 5 years as a bishop, owns an office supply business in Houston) and some bishops are (IMHO) just voyeristic pervs.

Sam has been teasing an “action” at the end of July, trying to get the Mormon church leadership to back off from this (IMHO) horrible practice of asking sexually explicit questions of children and youth. He tried talking to the church leadership via back channels but apparently the leadership decided they could just blow off Sam.

Sam is now in Salt Lake City for at least the next two weeks, because he’s doing a couple of things. First of all, he’s setting up across from Temple Square, every night, a chair, and inviting an apostle to come and sit in the chair and answer questions about the church’s interview policy. Each night there will be a different apostle invited. That takes stones, but on top of that, Sam started a hunger strike on Friday (I keep wanting to call it a fast) for the children to get this policy of interviewing youth alone changed.

So what we have here is a guy setting up on a public sidewalk in between the Mormon church’s most identifiable space, Temple Square, in front of the mall that’s owned by the Mormon church, and asking apostles (who most decidedly DO NOT DO THIS) to come out and just talk to people. And he’s doing this while on a hunger strike.

Again, I think the guy has stones. I’ve done picketing and actions, but this is sheer dedication in a good cause. The reality is that it’s very likely he will be ignored by church leadership, his hunger strike will end in failure and at the end, he’ll be excommunicated for not following church leadership. But he thinks this is important, because kids should not be asked sexual questions.

Here’s a brief TV news article, more will likely come:

I noticed that YouTube video yesterday because it’s so unusual for MSNBC to post 45 minute clips. They were posted under a name that I hadn’t seen before, and there were a bunch of them with “BREAKING’ in the title. The one I watched had some weird stuff going on (the ‘loading’ wheel would come on while the clock was still counting down) so I’m thinking they got pulled as unauthorized postings of MSNBC content. I quit watching them after the first one. I didn’t trust the content.

My son has been struggling with depression and anxiety lately, more than usual. Something happened at a show he went to and I still do not know what happened, but some asshole video taped him having a meltdown and spread it all over social media. The kid closed down his social media and became horribly depressed, wouldn’t answer phone calls or texts which worried a couple of his friends to the point they reached out to me. One of them showed up here yesterday and spent time talking to him and they hit the record store and when he came back he seemed in better spirits.

Today he went back on social media and made it clear he is on the autism spectrum which he has never acknowledged in public before. He also made a therapy appointment for tomorrow and has decided that he will no longer be ashamed of being diagnosed with Aspergers and he explained to everyone how it effects his perceptions and how people may see him.

I am so seriously proud of this young man I could burst.

Keep in mind the GOP would have to nearly unanimously agree that Trump has to go for him to be removed from office, so it simply isn’t going to happen as long as Trump remains personally more popular with the GOP base than the Republicans in Congress.

Intelligence has never been a positive trait in this family.

True, the Trump genome prizes selfishness over all else. When the day comes that Two Scoops finally departs the mortal realm, the fight over what little remains of his empire among Ivana’s brood will be epic. Tiffany and Barron can expect to be early casualties, as the former has been effectively put into exile and the latter is too late to the party.

Saw that Trump blustered a threat on Twitter to shut down the government before the midterms if the Democrats don’t agree to fund the Wall. The Democrats reaction should be “Really, you’d do that for us? Promise?”

Dems need to remind everyone that Trump said Mexico was going to pay for the wall.

Keep in mind the GOP would have to nearly unanimously agree that Trump has to go for him to be removed from office, so it simply isn’t going to happen as long as Trump remains personally more popular with the GOP base than the Republicans in Congress.

And by “nearly unanimous” we mean 18 Repug Senators would have to vote Aye to convict. Simple impeachment requires a simple HR majority.

Senate is unlikely, but not THAT bad.

You have to keep in mind how devastating to the GOP it would be for a substantial number of Republicans to help Democrats remove Trump from office. It would destroy the party. As long as Trump has the support of the GOP base, and he is incredibly popular with them now even as Democrats and most independents loathe him, I’m confident the Senate GOP will not vote to remove him, no matter how damning a case Mueller assembles.

He is extremely popular with the ever-diminishing GOP base. So, while he still stands, it is on a smaller and smaller platform.

He needs to keep doing dumb shit to further anger that growing ex-Republican now Independent group that needs no further excuse to vote for him.

On the left side of things…getting out the vote and signing up new younger voters is the key.

And, we have to watch that we don’t blow it with those independents. I’m not saying kiss their asses, just watch from getting too crazy and stick to making it look like Democrats know what they are doing and it is not all just politics.

Everyone above keep saying Ghengis Khan didn’t conquer Afghanistan, he controlled the majority of the country, including all its major cities at the time. The Mongolian control continued through his son and some of the ethnic groups consider themselves to be descendants.

Another reason Ghengis Khan is underrated in the West. The greatest conqueror in history was the only one who could tame the Afghans.

Targetpractice  Jul 29, 2018 • 10:52:55am

I’d say the odds of the GOP voting for conviction are dependent upon two key variables at the moment: How badly they get their asses whipped in November and how severe the charges are when Mueller releases his final report. If the GOP maintain or expand their majorities, then they’ll feel confident that he’s not enough of a drag on the party to do anything more than hold out until 2020 in the hope that he loses reelection or resigns. And if they suffer big losses but the charges are few or not that severe, again they’ll just wait out the clock, but with some heavy hinting that he should hang it up.

You’re gonna need big losses and severe charges if you ever want to see the GOP bite the bullet and make a Republican president the first ever to be convicted and removed from office. They still nurse their grudges from Nixon’s resignation, how do you think they’d handle Donny being frogmarched off to Club Fed?

I understand. I just am of the mind that using US troops in a conventional style in the Middle East is stupid.

How much history do we need to understand?

I would have gone after Bin Laden and the Taliban leaders in a more special forces secretive way. In and out quick when your intelligence finds a target.

Yeah, terrorize the terrorists.

You don’t need a big military presence to make big changes in a country.

What is a good example?

Look what Russia has been able to do to us.

In many ways we are still reacting to 9/11 and the Russians figured out we are nuts so they push the extreme thinking in our country and make the GOP a Taliban right here in America messing us up from within.
