GE Engineer charged with stealing trade secrets for China.

Zheng is accused of stealing trade secrets belonging to his employer, GE, federal prosecutors said in a prepared statement. He is specifically accused of using “an elaborate and sophisticated means to remove electronic files” involving GE turbine technology trade secrets.
He did so by using a system called steganography to hide the data inside an innocuous looking digital picture of a sunset and then emailing that picture and the stolen files to his personal email account, prosecutors said.

and…

Investigators found a handbook explaining Chinese government resources to those who can provide certain technology. His passport showed five trips to China over the past two years and various electronic items. The electronics were to be analyzed

That type of digital transfer has been known for a bit now. There have been postings around here.

I wonder how much other technology stealing is being done in the same way. You see one, you know there are more.

And, there is probably already some kind of a reader to expose it under development. Big companies will have all things scanned looking for it.

The ongoing digital war.

A white self-described gay guy posted this comment in the link:

It is perfectly acceptable to critique, criticize and reject Islam, its texts, its founder/s and its adherents as harshly as we do with those of other faiths and ideologies, including our own. For indigenous LGBTs with no other country to live in but their lands of birth, it is more than rational and reasonable to reject aspiring newcomers who seek your subordination and eventual extermination, either stated by them directly or justified and promoted by the texts and faiths that the newcomers themselves profess to believe in.

How to respond to that? He has a “Je Suis Charlie” image on his FB as well, to better gauge the type of guy we are dealing with.

Possibly. I just remember what Arthur Chu said in an article a few years back about Ahmed from Irving aka “clock boy”. He brought up how Chinese-Americans were enthusiastic about supporting the internment of Japanese-Americans for obvious reasons and then it bit them in the ass after 1945.

You’ll notice that the wingnut “fear” of election interference has risen as their poll numbers have shrunk. It’s as predictable as the tides, only difference is in elections past they’d blame DNC-hired hackers or “dead voters.” This year they’ll spin a tale of Russian hackers throwing the election to the DNC because “PUTIN HATES TRUMP!”

Trump looks and sounds worse every time he appears on public. I’m seriously worried that he might die in office, and soon. As several Lizards have pointed out, the RWNJs would go absolutely bug-nuts if that happened. To top it all, we would get Lord Gilead himself, Mike Pence, as the immediate replacement.

That could go several ways.
1) The Trump Base might revolt against Pence, because he’s the one who stands to gain most and he doesn’t have Trump’s ‘White Trash feral cunning’ to appeal to them with.

2) The base might not revolt, but they might be a lot less supportive of Pence. He’s more about the gays and the ladyparts than he is about the Browns. Without the Trump Base to scare the GOP, they might just become more conventionally bad, rather than actively pro-fascist.

3) The GOP might appeal to Trump’s memory to pass some of their egregious shit, in sort of a Bizarro version of LBJ appealing to JFK’s memory to pass GOOD legislation.

4) Without a leader, the Trump Cult that is the GOP might tear itself to pieces and disappear up its own asshole.

That bunch could get tricky for the Republicans. If Pence does become president he would probably try to be more mainline and that might not work with the new Trump Party.

The cult of personality would be destroyed and I don’t think Pence is liked enough in the party to have much power. It would be hard for him to run in 2020.

Remember, he was close to being out of politics because I don’t think Indiana wanted him anymore. Bannon and Manafort saved his ass and they chose him because they knew he was a lightweight they could count on being a nothing.

The good news for Sandbaggers is that Our Devolution will win 100 percent of its primary contests tonight in Tennessee. The bad news is that they’ve got only one candidate, Edward Nelson, running unopposed in the 19th District east of Knoxville. Cheeto Boy won the district 75-21%, and the three Republicans have 4 1/2 times as many early votes as he does, so this is kind of an empty victory.

162
Brian J.  Aug 2, 2018 • 6:12:15pm

My current First World problem.

I am in the unenviable (or enviable, depending on your point of view) position of being in the market for a new laptop and a smart phone. My current laptop is a 6 year old MacBook Pro which works great except that it is old enough that it doesn’t play well with the newer OS.
My phone works fine, but it is a flip phone and I’ve decided to join the 21st century and get a smart phone. Then there’s the question of a service plan for said phone. With data and stuff. Gah.
I’m a complete Luddite and have found Apple products reasonably intuitive, so I’m likely to go with lower end MacBook and iPhone because they’ll just end up becoming obsolete anyway. Spending this kind of money should be more fun…

Something I wrote for DK:

Let’s Be Clear: The Job of Democrats for the Next Few Years is to Save the Republic

We are in a perilous time in our country. While we have a madman in the White House, the true Constitutional Crisis is Congress. The Republican Party refuses to due the job required of it as head of the House and Senate: Be a proper check on the President. They refuse to hold him accountable. They refuse to require him to follow the law. They won’t even make him follow the minimum requirements of the office, such as not accepting gifts or payments from foreign officials. They are what’s wrong right now.

While we can’t take the presidency right now, we can regain control of Congress. With one chamber, we can start investigating him. With both, we can truly hold him accountable.

And holding him accountable must be our goal. And we must understand that not only is that our highest priority, we must also understand that, for the next couple of years at least, it will be the only significant accomplishment we will have.

The reality is this: If we gain control of both chambers, it will be with slim majorities in both. In the House, the GOP has had time to gerrymander so many districts that even our wave will switch far fewer districts our way than if there were not gerrymandering. In the Senate, the GOP has six people running for reelection, three retiring, while we have 24. So, even if we were to somehow sweep, we would end up with 58 seats. (In 2020, the GOP as 24 members running for reelection.)

What all of this means for us is that we’re not going to be able to push through many legislative goals. Hell, it’s going to be a fight just to make him follow the law because all the enforcement power, short of impeachment, is in the Executive. But, the Democrats can expose him, and their ability to investigate, plus our ability to scare those 24 Senators, can possibly turn some of the GOP against Trump, if we have control of Congress.

Now, the problem is, we have to get to that point, being in control of Congress. And this is where things are going to get really rough.

We’re Democrats. We are everywhere. There are more Democrats in small towns than there are Republicans in big cities. We truly represent the country as a whole. As a party, though, we generally aren’t one. We’re generally a loose collection of people going in the same direction. Which can be OK, 80% of the time. But it doesn’t work when the other party, the one with all of the current levers of power, is trying to destroy the country (you either let them run everything, or they’ll burn it all). For once, we have to be strongly united, against a common enemy.

And when I mean united, I mean truly leave-no-man-behind, if-you’re-not-with-us-you’re-against-us united. The Right, the Russians, and the far-far left (the part that believes the best way to save the country is to raze it) will be coming after us, and after our candidates and representatives.

We’re going to have to stand up for each other and our candidates. Imagine an accusation of assault against a candidate in October. In a tight race, if we throw up our hands, it could be win or lose. But wouldn’t October be a bit late for something like this to come out? Like it was planned? They know, from 2016, that a late term announcement can change a race. They also know we’d rather err on the side of caution. We’re going to have to stand tough, and weather issues like this.

We also need to be wary of those that want to pretend to be our friends, but actually want to divide us. We know some of them are in our party (Third Way, anyone?), but we also know of other people and parties that try to sound like they are appealing to disaffected Democrats (Jill Stein). We cannot let these people in and we cannot let them divide us. And they will try, and they will make statements that sound good, and will try to fool us. “Of course the Democrats can override a presidential veto, all they need are a few Republican votes.” “Why aren’t Democrats trying to solve real American problems?” “Shouldn’t Democrats care about all Americans?”

None of this is to imply that we stop caring about our other issues. We have to keep doing the things we do every day to help people, and we have to notify our Congresspeople when things our wrong so they can shine a light on them. But we can’t solve them with a broken system. The country won’t end in 2018, but it will be in far worse shape if we don’t take back Congress this year, and it will take longer to make things right, things like universal healthcare and education, reducing poverty, and taking care of immigrants. We have to stick together for our country.

Off topic: just was heading out with buckets to feed the horses, and heard a commotion. A big bunch of deer, including some does and two medium sized bucks with good racks and a Big Boy with a Big Rack were just a dozen yards from my car parked in front of my house. Having some sort of meeting. They packed up their pow wow and headed up into the woods. Always a bit of a thrill.

LOL, that won’t bring my phone service into this century, and we have a more or less antique stereo system that still works fine. Besides, if I buy a really good stereo system it will cost more than I intended to spend on the electronics.

How exactly would Trump shut down the government?
Go golfing and refuse to stop?
Lock himself in at Mar-A-Lago?
Go on an extended vacation to Russia?

I really hope he finds a way to torpedo Republicans’ chance to keep control of Congress. Works for me.

Veto a spending bill passed by Congress.

For your plan, take a look at Virgin Mobile (you’ll have to buy your iphone from them). The only drawback I’ve had with them is their network is only in the US. If you travel abroad you need to get your phone unlocked (no charge) and get a SIM card for the new country.

1) Stick to the low end phone you know.
2) Do you run any apps that need to upgrade the OS? If not and your laptop still runs acceptably for you, stick with it instead of wasting money on a new one. Upgrade ram and convert to SSD if you aren’t already using one, if you can, that will speed things up more than anything.

My son needs a new laptop because his old one only has 4gb ram and can’t be upgraded to the 8gb his app (in his case a game) needs. Without that kind of requirement, just keep the old one going.

We very rarely travel outside the country, so that’s no problem. How’s their coverage? We do go to many obscure locations out in the wide open spaces.

As I said, I’m a Luddite and I’ve got no clue what upgrading to SSD even means. So when Firefox kept giving me the spinning beachball of death because because the OS was too old to support the updates, I updated the OS, but now it tends to run hot, and I’m going to need to put some money into a new battery soon and the cord is splitting, and so forth.

As to the phone, there are some occasions when I really could use a smart phone. Since I’ve gone on Medicare and am not paying gobs of money for medical insurance, I’m going to splurge a bit.

They use the US Sprintnet. Beyond that, there’s a coverage map on their site you can check. I’ve only had trouble in the AK Panhandle (about the only place they have decent coverage is Anchorage, although they’re slowly expanding) and Wyoming for the eclipse. But I don’t think anyone gets coverage there.

Also, if DT’s trade war plans continue, prices are likely to go through the roof. I’ve been buying up all the Chinese products I might need because of that (contributing to the 4.1% growth in the second quarter. But I’m almost done now, so no more growth from me).

I’ve had Virgin Mobile for several years and never had a problem. I travel a lot, but mostly to cities. I have unlimited talk, text and data for less than $40 a month and no contract. Their plans are really flexible—last time I checked, you could change them at any time (like, if you weren’t going to use the phone much, drop to a lower level then raise it when you’re going to need it more.)
