I like how Trump felt it necessary to compare Lebron to Michael Jordan like the need to pigeonhole him as just a black NBA player didn’t come from a deeply racist place. Trump likes Jordan because Jordan generally doesn’t say shit. As Howard Bryant details in his book The Heritage, there was an entire middle generation of black athletes who generally kept their mouths shut, because for them success somehow meant crossing over.

But as journalist Howard Bryant reveals, this has always been more complicated for black athletes, who from the start, were committing a political act simply by being on the field. In fact, among all black employees in twentieth-century America, perhaps no other group had more outsized influence and power than ballplayers. The immense social responsibilities that came with the role is part of the black athletic heritage. It is a heritage built by the influence of the superstardom and radical politics of Paul Robeson, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos through the 1960s; undermined by apolitical, corporate-friendly “transcenders of race,” O. J. Simpson, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods in the following decades; and reclaimed today by the likes of LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick, and Carmelo Anthony.

Which is perhaps why Jim Brown, who was the running back who racked up the most yards in his NFL career before self-terminating it, was so controversial. He was just plain uppity. Talking about civil rights and shit.

In terms of dealing with accommodation, it’s entirely accurate. In the non-sports world, it is late Bill Cosby, not early Bill Cosby.

re: #48 retired cynic

It is, but he’s pretty clearly talking about pre-murder trial OJ, who deliberately removed himself almost entirely from the black experience. It was only when he needed to appeal to black jurors that his defense team filled his house with the trappings of black americana and tried to paint him as steeped in the black experience.

Bryant isn’t saying that Jordan is doing that, just that in the past he’s chosen not to speak out at several opportunities. Of the three names listed Mike is definitely shown the most progress in recent years though.

Here’s Walker giving away the farm again.

Arkansas official says his state can’t match Wisconsin’s $100M tax incentive package for Kimberly-Clark

Wisconsin lawmakers’ proposal to provide $100 million in tax incentives to preserve 610 jobs at two Kimberly-Clark plants is “unprecedented,” said an Arkansas official working to keep the papermaker’s plant open in his state.

Officials from Wisconsin and Arkansas are each trying to persuade Kimberly-Clark to keep a few hundred jobs in their states as the company cuts thousands of jobs nationwide — and one state’s success may depend on the other’s failure.

Mike Preston, director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, said Thursday he remains intent on keeping about 350 jobs in a plant there, but signaled he expects to lose a bidding war with Wisconsin given the proposed incentive package’s “unprecedented” scope.

I also think that athletes of that era shouldn’t bear too much of the blame, that the whole transcending race thing was an organic product of the 80’s & 90’s zeitgeist, where (except for gay rights) social justice and equality just wasn’t on most people’s radar as a real continuing and pressing struggle. For a long time before the internet democratized access to alternative media there really was a corporate push to appeal to our collective conceit that we’d largely evolved past racism as a widespread systemic concern.

High school student sent to Mexico after losing DACA status killed less than a month later, reports say

A US high school student was killed in Mexico three weeks after US immigration officials threatened him with deportation, according to local news reports.

Manuel Antonio Cano Pacheco left Mexico at age three, and spent most of his life with this parents and three younger siblings in Des Moines, Iowa, the Des Moines Register reports.

As a teenager, he was granted protection from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme (DACA) - an Obama-era programme offering protections for those brought into the US illegally as children. Manuel attended a local high school, and was expected to graduate in May. According to his friends, he had a college scholarship lined up in Chicago.

Instead, he was murdered in the Mexican state of Zacatecas while out with a family friend, his mother told the Register.

Manuel’s DACA status was revoked in 2017, after he was convicted on two misdemeanours, according to a spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In the months following, he was convicted of two more - including driving under the influence.

Judge dismisses Gov. Snyder, state from Flint water class action lawsuit

A federal class action lawsuit filed on behalf of Flint residents and businesses can move forward but Gov. Rick Snyder and the state of Michigan are among those dismissed as defendants.

U.S. District Judge Judith Levy issued a 128-page opinion Wednesday, Aug. 1, also dismissing former Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant, former Flint emergency manager Darnell Earley, former Mayor Dayne Walling and DHHS official Nancy Peeler from the case.

Motions to dismiss the complaint and to dismiss other defendants in the case, including the city of Flint, were granted in part and denied in part.

4Chan was where QAnon got started - after a few postings, the 4Channers called bullshit, so Q moved over to 8Chan.

Q cited “OPSEC” for why they moved to 8Chan (LOLOL).

Forgot to add, it’s been noted by others that it’s entirely possible that QAnon is more than one person. A Redditor noticed than in one of Q’s postings, they may have accidentally exposed their Reddit identity; apparently, it’s another Reddit user, or at least that individual is posting as Q.

Something about a security key being left open, IIRC.

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Aug 4, 2018 • 1:57:53am

Yep, I think Q-Anon is a depraved hipster playing it for laughs. He or she probably had no idea how big it would get and is now just riding the wave. There may eventually be a high profile “confession” to let the believers know they have been duped. The believers, of course, will reject this and continue to elaborate the theory themselves. It may continue even after Mueller dumps his avalanche of indictments on the Russo-Right, with the believers wracking their “brains” trying to figure out how the evil ones managed to get to Mueller and hijack the “real” investigation.

Indeed they do.

If I were a less principled person, I’d be selling Q bumperstickers and Q T-Shirts and posters and whatnot.

I’d probably be making $$$ hand over fist.

Instead, I feel that odd mix of compassion and “How fucking stupid are you Q followers that you’d fall for such obvious bullshit?!” I get it……people fall for these sort of things so they can feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves, or maybe they can feel they’re “in the know”, instead of being compelled to reflect on their otherwise sad lives of quiet desperation.

That so many have embraced such a patently ludicrous delusion is beyond sad. It’s actually tragic; it speaks to a serious lack of critical thinking skills.

There was actually a post a couple of threads back by some Italian writers who said the Q in Qanon was actually trolling the alt-right, and they fell for it? Something about references to a book Q wrote?

They’re all trolls, trolling everybody. The whole racist right, plus the Russians. It’s easy, it hurts other people (especially those trying to do good), and it does nothing to improve the life of the troll (unless you can eat spite).

I was just glancing around on that Q nonsense and it references back to an earlier post of mine, that the two subreddits - The Donald and Great Awakening - are at war with each other.

There was a Q posting implying that The Donald subreddit had been “infiltrated”. So whomever Q is, for whatever reason, they’ve singled out The Donald subreddit and are attempting to portray it as compromised in some manner.

Very weird. Mostly because there’s quite a bit of overlap between the users of those subreddits.

Local TV bit on some people not too happy with The Big Don coming to central Ohio today and using a public high school for his rally for Troy Balderson.

By the way, Balderson ads are thick these last two days. I don’t think I’ve seen this many ads for a Congress run in like forever. This morning I saw three different Balderson ads in a one hour news show. One of them was run three times. That was the “soft” as about how nice a guy he is and how his mommy raised him up respectfully.

I bet Trump uses LeBron somehow in his rally. He can’t let anything go.

He’ll probably say something like “why do you love LeBron, he just left Ohio to go to LA and be with all those nasty California liberals?”

He will slime him somehow, and knowing the Trump clan that will be in attendance, they will agree.

Kelly tells him to let it go so he can avoid more public facepalms.
Scavino tells him to let it go because he doesn’t want to serve Twitter duty this weekend.

One really (darkly) humorous thing that’s emerged in the last 48 hours or so is that two subreddits - Great Awakening and The Donald - are at war with each other. The Donald’s subreddit dismisses QAnon as straight-up bullshit, while the QAnon wackos at Great Awakening have convinced themselves that the folks over at The Donald are Deep State Illuminati Satanic cannibals.

If you haven’t read it, Rick Wilson’s piece on QAnon is pretty good.

The claims of Q-Anon make Nostradamus look like Hemingway. Naturally, they’re elliptical, variable, and impossible to cross-check. Hundreds of YouTube videos, blog posts tweets, Facebook items, and speculation follow each post, a Confederacy of Dunces that ramifies this idiocy out into dumber and dumber dead ends. QAnon asks its believers to “follow the breadcrumbs” and fill in the blanks. Those blanks get filled with epic idiocy.

The glee with which the followers of this absurdity latch on to imaginary deportations of Hillary Clinton, John Podesta, and others to Gitmo is notable. Several times, Q has promised them that any moment now the rest of the Deep State will occupy the darkest holes of the American prison system. QAnon tells them that retribution is at hand, and they’re ravenous for more. Lurid and exciting for the rubes, but as of yet, Hillary Clinton walks free. If that even is Hillary Clinton, and not a shapeshifting reptilian overlord.

Those of us with the unfortunate awareness of the clownishly risible QAnon conspiracy cult have been reveling in the comedy gold, lavishly overwrought, dangerously stupid proclamations of Q for months. We’ve alternated between laughter and wide-eyed shock at how credulous Trump’s Army of Cletuses must be to fall for such an obvious, ludicrous con. Then again, Donald Trump put the “con” in “conspiracy” as far back as his embrace of birtherism. If the puzzle surrounding QAnon is a fever dream wrapped in an enigma, coated with nougat, rolled in nuts and filled with a creamy center of delusional paranoia, Trump’s own role in fostering it is right out of the Lil Tots’ First Book of Authoritarian Strategy.

He had me at ‘Army of Cletuses.’

The battery probably needs to be recalibrated. Drain it all the way then charge it. If it continues you can do a PRAM reset. The Help Menu will show you what keys you have to hold down to do that.

The most efficient way to save battery capacity is to dim the display a bit, it has an outsized effect on the battery. Also turn off the keyboard under-lighting.

Silly question. When I misspell a word and it is underlined red denoting it as such, what is the equivalent of a right click to get the correct spelling?

Put the cursor on the word and either press Control + Click or click with two fingers on the control pad. For two fingers make sure you have gestures enabled. Go to the Apple logo in the upper left -> System Preferences -> Trackpad -> Check Secondary Click. There are options in that setting to assign the secondary click to two fingers or upper left or right corner.

Also, because the amount of trackpad force required to click varies from the top to the bottom of the pad I find it’s best to make it so I just tap the trackpad instead of having physically depress (click) the trackpad. Tap to click is enabled on the same menu. To make Tap to click work with drag (double tap and hold to drag) though you’ll need to also go to System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Mouse and Trackpad -> Click on Trackpad Options -> Check Enable Dragging with your preferred option (I use without drag lock.)

Definitely; ‘Book of Souls’ was one of their best albums in recent years. I greatly enjoyed it.

And it’s nice to see they’ve got new material, and it’s still good. A band like Iron Maiden could easily rest on their laurels - their repertoire is the stuff of legend, but they keep going and keep coming up with new songs.

A little “inside baseball” insight about the location of the yam’s rally in Ohio today—how stupid it is for the race he’s promoting as well as for another Ohio upcoming race.

…his venue accouncement today (Olentangy Orange High School) likely did more to energize Ohio Democrats, who are always eager to remind voters about the Republican ECOT scandal…

He will be joined by Troy Balderson (or Steve Stivers?) and our old pal Andy Brenner.

Brenner, a huge supporter of the failed online charter school ECOT, probably should have warned the Trump team that their choice would stir up more than just a little dust.

“While President Trump rallies supporters at Olentangy Orange High School, students, teachers, and parents will remember that it was Education Committee Chairman Andrew Brenner and his fellow Republican lawmakers who allowed ECOT to steal over $600,000 from Olentangy Local Schools,” said Louise Valentine, who is challenging Brenner in Ohio’s 19th Senate District.

Pratchett’s writing did improve in his later books. The satire was sharper, too.

I learned that if I got through three whole pages without finding an elegantly crafted pun that I should go back because I obviously missed something.

Every good Terry Pratchett novel found me at least once tossing the spine of the book at the nearest wall for having been led down the garden path over some incredibly subtle and unexpected word play

only fellow who ever outdid him was Jasper Fforde (The Eyre Affair series). At one point I found myself ready to rip a wall out and toss it at the book…

That’s not a fat waiter, that’s a Sacha Baron Cohen character.

LeBron is awesome. One of my Cleveland based cousins is a teacher in that area and she thinks the world of him. LBJ isn’t just a great basketball player. He’s a great guy too.

A little “inside baseball” insight about the location of the yam’s rally in Ohio today—how stupid it is for the race he’s promoting as well as for another Ohio upcoming race.

That ECOT school mess is going to be hung around a lot of Ohio Senate and House Republican’s neck for the next few elections.

There is corruption and there is corruption. But that was low-down dirty politics that ripped off schools meaning it hurt kids.

And Kasich had a lot to do with it too. He is in his last year as Governor and probably thinks time will run out on it. Should he run for president, it will be used against him.

Cruz has sold out his wife, father, and family for the sake of politics. He has zero redeeming qualities.

Nice. Shaun King needs to be reminded all the damn time. Problem is he is too full of himself to ever admit he was wrong about any of his past crap.

Nice thing though…he seems to have died down as far as being a popular person to put his tweets up here at LGF.

Just wanted to ask if you read Urban’s bullshit letter yesterday—He put it on Twitter, and the “we love you Urban—Courtney is a liar etc.” responses from OSU fans made me want to puke. (And reminded why I own zero OSU memorabilia, even though I went there and taught there.)

And Zach Smith’s pathetic interview was…well, pathetic—“Anything that happened to her body was all defensive movements to remove myself from the situation.”

Yeah, right Zachie.

I am wasting way too much time obsessing about this crap.

Just keep in mind not all Columbus Ohio State fans are on Meyer’s side and backing him no matter what. He is getting plenty of static about all of his comments. ESPN Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan have ripped him real good on their shows.

Sure he’s a good coach, but this bit when tied to his issues at Florida show Urban is no damn saint like some want to portray him.

Also, the heat is on Athletic Director Gene Smith too.

Some are speculating this could cost both of them their positions. Smith is said to have been told by Meyer it was going on as Urban was to do. So, Smith may have sat on the info.

One thing about Ohio State University, it is big enough to boot someone like Urban Meyer without a second thought if needed. And they will immediately get a huge string of other coaches looking into the job.

Zach kind of threw Gene Smith under the bus—at one point saying he told Smith but not Urban. There’s plenty of assholiness to go around.

I know not all OSU fans are assholes—in fact, most of the more rabid ones I knew in Columbus didn’t even go to OSU.
