Thanks for all the support guys re: immigration.

I will tell you this: I will not go quietly into the night. If the government does try and deport me under this asinine rule I WILL get a lawyer and plead my case to a judge.

Wow…Candace Owens is a piece of work. As I mentioned in the last thread (CL’d) Ari had a segment with her debating Michael Eric Dyson and it turned into a complete television breakdown…mostly caused by Owens.

Buy the way, she was complaining about Antifa attacking her at a restaurant last night.

I saw this…

CNN - Conservative activists driven from restaurant by antifa group

Washington (CNN)Conservative activists Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk were accosted at a Philadelphia restaurant on Monday by protesters from a local antifa group.

Owens and Kirk, who lead the conservative super PAC Turning Point USA, had their breakfast at Green Eggs Café prematurely ended when protests erupted outside.

Owens told CNN that the protesters, who bore an antifa sticker, “immediately recognized” Kirk and her, and a much larger group approached the restaurant about 20 minutes later. She said the protesters began harassing and throwing things at Kirk and her from outside the restaurant.

Videos posted by Owens, who is black, and Kirk on Twitter depict an angry scene in which protesters recite chants such as “f—- white supremacy,” “no good cops in a racist system” and “cops and Klan hand-in-hand.”

More at link plus some video of Candace going off…

I agree to a degree.

But I also understand what he is doing.

It is called being fair. I know it is a forgotten concept on TV, but Ari does try.

And Candace does nothing for Republicans except play to wingnuts. And I think Ari had an inkling that would happen.

Maybe I am wrong for thinking this way, but we can’t just be us and them…we get on conservatives and their media for just that.

But I am old school.

Can’t help with OH12, but I did get my primary ballot in. There were 29 candidates for Senator. (Maria Cantwell was 7th on the list.) 5 Democrats, 13 Republicans (Goodspaceguy decided he’s a Republican this time), a number of “Independents”, “StandUpAmerica Party”, etc.

I’m pretty sure Maria will wind up in the top two.

Net neutrality is only obliquely relevant at best however in that it restricted the actions of ISPs, which are genuine or quasi genuine public utilities in that they meet all or most of the definitions in my first tweet. If the complaint was that ATT is severely throttling Info Wars then it would be on point.

All the early votes are now in, and Danny O’Connor leads by 9,442 votes or 26.5%. If the assumption was true that the early vote will be 1/3 of the total, then Danny just has to stay as close as Obama or Hillary to win.

69
mmmirele  Aug 7, 2018 • 4:56:23pm

So there was this.

Basically, he’s going on about how Christians have always seen abortion as bad. He posted the same thing to his Instagram and I left a couple of comments there, because I was furious.

I’m sorry to say this, but it has to be said. You do not understand women, abortion, biology or history. First of all, you have never had to look in a mirror and consider that you might be pregnant. I have —at age 16, when I was a junior in high school, and at age 26, in my first semester of law school. (Neither time I was pregnant.)

Second, despite what it says in the Didache (and I’ll get back to that), women have obtained abortions throughout the ages, no matter what their religions have said about it. And there are reasons for it. In the case of Christianity, it was because women who had children out of wedlock were basically treated as if we were sluts. (That’s still the case today, btw.)

As for biology, I know that historically, there has been an argument that miscarriage (whether intentional or not) of an embryo/fetus before “quickening” wasn’t a crime. I also know that modern science has show that 50 percent (not a typo) of all fertilized human ova fail to implant. And that’s just the pre-implantation stage, more ova fail early in the pregnancy and are lost to miscarriage. But the modern pro-life movement has invested itself in “life begins at conception” and will not deal at all with the facts of biology, which are that over 50 percent of fertilized ova fail and die.

Lastly, let’s talk about history. i mentioned the Didache. There are also the writings of the early church fathers. Note that—“fathers.” They were all men. We don’t hear from a woman until the early third century (Perpetua) and then there is more silence. The church councils were held entirely by men. The only time women were involved were when they cooked the food, cleaned the rooms and did the laundry of the great church leaders. And that’s because women were basically considered legal property in most respects until the very late 19th century. The church has NEVER had a discussion about abortion with women included, including the women in your church who have had abortions. (They are there, they exist, but they won’t tell you, because your words will condemn them.)

My name is [omitted] and I won’t be buying your next book, because it is obvious that you don’t see women as your equal, that you will still impose ideas that were dreamed up by men who thought of women as property and who STILL think of women as property. I’m sorry about that, because reading some of “Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God” has kept me on the edge of Christianity. But when I read this and see you’re just like every other Evangelical man who thinks you own women and you can tell us what to do with our bodies, because you can’t think past guys who lives two millennia ago in a time when women were considered *property*—well, that’s the final straw. Now I am going to cry, because I honestly thought you might be a bit different, but no, you’re not.

I wish! This morning was the first time they’ve really played! Rango was ‘grrwoofing’ and play-bowing at Dory, who was hiding under a desk, and then they played hide-and-seek, with Dory appearing by the ottoman, then running through the gap between the sofa and chair and popping out under the end table, and then back.

I don’t know. A lot of Texans didn’t think that was such a bad thing.

Kris Kobach is trailing in the very early going in the Kansas GOP primary for Governor, which may not be good for Dems’ chances this autumn but make it much less likely that the state will have to add two more K’s at the beginning of its name.

Also, someone named Ron Estes is running against GOoPer Rep. Ron Estes, apparently not having figured out that the “Distinguished Gentleman” trick works better when the incumbent is dead.

I know it means nothing (guessing early voting?) but the very first #s from Ohio-12/Franklin County

Candidate Votes Pct.
Danny O’Connor (D) 10,878 80.5%
Troy Balderson (R) 2,579 19.1%
Other (I) 62 0.5%

Most likely the early mail in ballots. Franklin County is always fast with those.

The Ohio state site seems to have slightly faster results. O’Connor is ahead by 6,400 votes overall, or about 3,000 behind for just the Election Day votes. However, Franklin and Delaware Counties are reporting more slowly than the more Republican ones (16% of precincts are in districtwide, but only 8% of Franklin’s and none of Delaware’s).

The good news is that the state site now has him up by 5,400 votes overall (or down 4,000 on E-Day) with just under half the precincts in. The bad news is that they now show almost 2/3 of Franklin County in. Almost all the votes are now in from the really red counties like Marion, Morrow, and Muskingum. It’s all down to Delaware County, I think.

Alex Jones and his many imitators and enablers are basically con artists, using social media to spread evil poison in the American body politic, in order to get rich. I’m very disappointed that @jack apparently doesn’t see what’s going on.

Or maybe he does; that would be even worse.

Midsize commercial platform. Fairly popular for managing contact lists and crafting targeted email blasts. This is a big deal because unlike the other platforms MailChimp’s involvement would’ve been fairly opaque had they not chosen to announce the move. It means they think in the overall balance it’s good PR and that Twitter is fucking this up.

Just to take a very broad-stroked overview: Big urban-rural divide, but it seems like O’Connor is outperforming his targets by meaningful margins in Franklin County than whereas Balderson is only matching or narrowly exceeding them in the rural counties. So that would point toward an edge for O’Connor, but … on the other hand, Delaware County looks good for Balderson based on the very early Election Day returns we have there. We’re still flying fairly blind.

Bummer. I was hoping Danny could hold the lead. I think that was important to show he could take it. But I am not giving up…it is going to be close.

Reminder too…this gets repeated in November. Same race, same candidates. Yeah, it is screwy but thank Pat Tiberi…his timing of resigning caused this schedule.

So, if Danny loses and it is close, that may bring more people out in November.

Licking, Muskingum and Richland counties are now 100 percent reporting in Ohio. Balderson won Licking by 22 points when our benchmarks estimated he only needed an 18-point win. He won Muskingum by 34 and only needed 17 (although he’s from Muskingum, so he may have had home-field advantage). And he won Richland by 18 when he only needed to win by 17. O’Connor needs to comfortably clear his benchmarks in Franklin and Delaware now in order to win.

I just don’t get protest votes in a time where the differences between the two parties couldn’t be more obvious. I also want ot know what the hell the Green Party has done at all in this country to merit a vote.

With 18 percent reporting in Missouri, Proposition A (which would make Missouri the 28th right-to-work state) is going down in flames, 63 percent to 37 percent. Organized labor raised $16 million to defeat Prop A, so they wanted this bad, especially after a devastating ruling at the Supreme Court this summer that essentially made all public-sector unions right-to-work. Some Missourians think the Republican-dominated legislature will just turn around and pass right-to-work next year anyway, but with a margin like this, maybe they’ll think twice.

If this ends up as a pretty substantial loss by El-Sayed in Michigan (he is down 15 now), it should be a reminder that while Ocasio-Cortez is new and interesting (so I get why journalists/podcasts/talk shows are booking her), interviewing Pelosi may give you a better sense of where the Democratic Party currently is.

The AP and Politico join Dave Wasserman above in calling Whitmer the winner in the Michigan Democratic governor’s primary. El-Sayed is winning narrowly in Wayne, Washtenaw, and Kent (Grand Rapids) Counties, but nowhere else, and is being savaged in the outstate counties that he thought voted for Берни because they were progressive…

Franklin County is now almost fully reported, and O’Connor had pulled into a 200-vote overall advantage. But almost all the outstanding vote is in Delaware County, and that has favored Balderson so far. We still aren’t sure of where the outstanding precincts are in Delaware. And provisional ballot could even come into play. Still, you’d rather be Balderson.

I don’t know much about either candidate but honestly I hate this idea that Dem established back candidates are somehow “corporate” or “sell outs.” I preferred HRC over Sanders because HRC actually walked the talk when it came to accomplishments. The Bros loved crapping on her for being a Goldwater girl in the early 60’s but ignored that HRC fully embraced the full promise of the 60’s and unlike Bernie didn’t go fleeing to lily white Vermont only to later brag about how proud he was of his NYC roots. Nothing wrong with Vermont, it’s a beautiful state but I’ve always been rubbed the wrong way that Mr. Senator of the People went there instead of staying in the most diverse city on the planet..

It would, of course, be great if O’Connor won. But even if he loses - if we lose - it still has to have Republicans running scared. Expect them to hit this hard if Balderson wins, because they want people to overlook that he just about lost what should have been a sure thing.

Except, that to Republicans, only one thing has any relevance at all to their political calculus: winning, and having Republicans in office. How they accomplish that is irrelevant, and “close” is a near-meaningless concept.

Somebody upthread pointed out that even if Balderson wins the special by a single vote, the egomaniacal gloating out of the White House will be overwhelming: no matter what sort of “harbinger” this special might be for November for the rest of the GOP. And they will, naturally, use every bit of media leverage they can muster to paint a rosy picture over their “victory”: which the media will eagerly lap up….

I’m not disagreeing with any of that. But for the guys who are having to go out there and win their elections by a single vote, it is a terrifying prospect. They actually have to campaign. And relying on the deep war chests that usually make their opponents go away does not seem to be any help. Bad news from Missouri: BernieBro Brent Welder leads narrowly in the 3rd District primary, 3% ahead of Sharice Davids with the early vote in.

On the other hand, he looks like he won’t have much company if he wins. The only other BernieBro winning his primary right now is James Thompson in KS-4, a safe GOoPer seat. He’s winning his primary less than 2-1 despite outspending his opponent 10-1.

Rashida Tlaib is trailing twice in MI-13 (special and general) but is still close. Steve Friday is getting walloped by a 6-1 margin in MI-7.

Cori Bush’s primary challenge to Lacy Clay is losing by more than 2-1 in MO-1, while Winston Apple is down double digits in MO-6.

We’ve tried not to focus on the national implications of OH-12 so much tonight. For the reason why, listen to Monday’s podcast — basically, we think there are a lot more precise indicators of both the national environment and individual districts now, such that we don’t gain as much from the useful-but-noisy metric that is special elections. To be clear, though, a photo-finish for Republicans is not good news for them tonight. If similar districts around the country are photo-finishes on Nov. 7, Republicans will almost certainly lose the House
