It looks like Kilauea has finished this eruption cycle.
Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone
Activity and lava output from fissure 8 remains low. The morning overflight crew observed a small active lava lake within the fissure 8 cone, a weak gas plume, and a drained upper lava channel. The surface of the lava lake was about 5-10 m below the spillway entrance.
Kīlauea Volcano Middle East Rift Zone
Gas measurements of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō plume taken on Monday and Tuesday morning indicated a reduced SO2 emission rate lower than the measurement last Friday and similar to what has been observed over the past three months. No active lava was observed in the crater on an overflight on August 6th.
Kīlauea Volcano Summit
The volcano’s summit remains quiet following the most recent collapse at 11:55 a.m. HST August 2nd. This continues a significant departure from the pattern of seismicity and deformation over the past several months, with very low rates of seismicity continuing today. The deformation at the summit as measured by tiltmeter and GPS instruments has virtually stopped.

The news outlet obtained an eight-page draft of the order, which allows the president to impose sanctions on “10 of the 30 largest businesses” in a country whose government has interfered in the U.S. electoral process.
Those penalties would only be imposed mandatorily if foreigners are found to have meddled, the Post reported. Similar sanctions already have been implemented against Russians determined to have interfered in the 2016 election.
The man who cannot address the subject of electoral interference without hedging that it could be “any number of countries”…is having crafted a blank check to sanction any country whose government he accuses to have “meddled” in our elections.

The electric company came out to my house today … they called saying they wanted to replace the meter (and inspect it). The reason: We used no electricity last month and almost none this month. They said they suspected the meter was bad (and didn’t say they suspected we bypassed it).
I pointed out that they disconnected our electric two days into our Yukon trip because a storm brought down our wires, and they were just out here Saturday to restore four of our plug sockets. We didn’t use electricity because we weren’t hooked up, and we’re not using it now because we can’t. They could check their own records from Saturday.
They insisted on sending someone out sixty miles anyway. “Okay, fine, it’s your meter.”
The electrician after inspecting the meter box and asking about why we didn’t seem to be using any electricity then changed the meter.
Do these folks talk to each other?

Saudi Arabia crucified a man in Mecca while aggressively calling out Canada over human rights
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia executed a man by crucifixion in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday amid waging a public-relations battle with Canada over human rights.
The man, Elias Abulkalaam Jamaleddeen, was accused of murder, theft, and attempted rape, according to Bloomberg.
Saudi Arabia, ruled by its interpretation of Islamic law, rarely carries out crucifixions, but capital punishment remains common.
*snip*
Canada on Friday called for Saudi Arabia to release women’s rights campaigners detained in the country, prompting a harsh response from the kingdom.Saudi-owned media has blasted Canada for arresting a Holocaust denier and other citizens. TV pundits have brought up Canada’s suicide rate in what appeared as a broadside against the country’s way of living.
And Saudi media took a decidedly dark turn on Monday when it appeared to threaten Canada with a 9/11-style attack by tweeting a graphic with an image of an airliner flying toward Toronto’s skyline.
Yes, our friends the Saudis crucify headless bodies, but criticize Canada for arresting a holocaust denier.

When the electrician was here Saturday, he noted one side of the wiring was still live (the other side was pulled out of the house). We hunted for a fuse or breaker to kill the wiring … eight feet up in my kitchen closet I found the porcelain double-throw knife switch.
He said “I’m not touching that thing.” I used a broom handle to throw the switch into the “open” position.

I remember replacing the fuse box in my grandmother’s basement with a modernized breaker box. I had never seen home-grade fuses before. It was also an interesting exercise in drilling into old-growth native American hardwood as opposed to the pine 2x4’s supporting more modern homes. Old-time “wiring” could be pretty - ummm, interesting: in my mother’s house (West Los Angeles, built c. 1950), she had to call the electrician one time when some lights started flickering: the guy came down from the attic freaked out: the old transformers had leaked, and were sitting in puddles of PCB (?) contained only by their metal pans. Needless to say, they were replaced tout suite……

The right will still see it as working to protect Trump from a witch-hunt.
Look, I’m going to go out on a real thin limb here. I don’t think politicians, in general, should be protected, even from actual witch-hunts. If someone is out to get a guy, let them bring evidence to the table; if they’ve got it, they’ve got it, and if they don’t, they don’t. I know that’s too simplistic in a complicated world, and that falsely accused victims would be numerous and notable, but I remind people that my own goddamn US Senator just got run out of town on a rail due to mountains of bullshit that amounted to a witch hunt. I’m basically to the point where I don’t care anymore. People are always seeking to make up shit about other people, and it all boils down to, “Good if it’s their guy, bad if it’s my guy.” So I’m more inclined to throw up my hands, say, “Fuck it,” and declare open season on both sides. The only thing stopping me is that Republicans have neither decency nor shame, and thus such a policy would disproportionately affect upstanding Democrats.

Seems incredibly short sighted though. If they were to lead a bipartisan effort to impeach and remove Trump, sure, they probably get trounced in 2018 and/or 2020 because the Trumpkinists stay home or vote for the new Tangerine Party. But long term, they’re probably better off. For comparison’s sake: Nixon won big in 1972, and even 1974 wasn’t terrible for them (other than the 49 seats in the House), they lost one seat in each House in 1976 and even kept the presidential election close. By 1980 they had a majority in the Senate and won back all their losses in the House, along with the Reagan presidency.

Another way to interpret that is that Nunes is saying that no matter what is proven, the only way the president gets thrown out of office is if the Republicans don’t stand firm. If Trump shot someone on 5th avenue, Nunes would say it’s not really a high crime.

All I can think of is the Russians have been plotting some kind of a game to infiltrate the Republican party by funding them under the table for some time. They did that knowing in time they could run a puppet candidate (Big Donny) and force his election that even surprised the Republicans.
With stooge in place, the Russians reminded all of the congress folks they control that you will now do what we make Trump do.
Or we expose all of you.
It has to be something outlandish and I am only throwing stuff at the wall, but politically not a lot of what is going on makes sense. Therefore it has to be extraordinary.
Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. A. Conan Doyle<
I have suspected for some time, since before Trump’s candidacy in fact, that the Russians were massively embedded in the Republican Party. Consider, for example, the Texas secession movement. It was a running joke in Texas for decades. Then in 2013 or so, various Russians started to take an interest. The tired joke suddenly became a hot issue, with fully half of the county GOP committees supporting a pro-secession ballot measure. We know now, of course, that Russians were indeed behind it, though the Republican traitors continue their pitiful denials.

And that really exposes the root of the hyper-partisanship we’ve been fighting for decades. It is literally all about, “Fuck you, I got mine.” Donald J. Trump is the logical extreme of a political movement that has sought nothing else but to remain in power and enrich themselves at all costs.

So-called “never Trumpers” (like one of my senators) are only concerned that Trump is not using their dog whistles and could be a threat to their gaining and maintaining power.
As noted above, it is deeds that matter, not words. Recording Devin Nunes could be a conservative who wants to put country above party, or could be a conservative who sees an opening with a letter opener sticking metaphorically out of Devin Nunes’s back.
