Wednesday Night Sick Funk: Mark Lettieri on the “Leonardo” Baritone Guitar

Music • Views: 35,072

YouTube

AS SEEN ON TV w/ the Fearless Flyers!

Quick kick n’ snare jam with the new funk machine, the Bacci “Leonardo” Baritone! It’s a dual-output guitar: one output for the “bass” pickup that targets the bottom three strings, and another output for the Tele pickups that hit all six. The bass pickup is running though an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe into a Kemper Bassman profile, and the Tele pickups are sent direct into Logic X, through a flanger guitar plug-in. Enjoy.

Not a musician, but I’d guess about 50 to 80 Hz.

A baritone uses the same tuning as a 6 string guitar, only tuned down to a low B rather than the usual E tuning guitars get.

There are six string basses, but I’m not sure how they’re tuned.

A Bass VI is tuned an octave below IIRC, but same deal. Same tuning scheme as a 6 string guitar.

I’m not sure some of the more ‘modern’ 6 string basses use the same tuning, though.

Extreme overnight heat in California and the Great Basin in July 2018

Daytime high temperatures were well above average across much of the western United States in July, but it was overnight low temperatures that were really extreme in large areas of California—where firefighters are battling multiple wildfires—and the Great Basin, and in isolated pockets of Colorado and the Southwest.

Being on the strait of the river delta we have our own unique weather. This summer it hasn’t been particularly hot nor has it been particularly cool. It has been 93 nearly every day for the past 7 weeks, with a few 100+ days. I’m beginning to think the thermostat is stuck.

Do they really think liberals don’t have better things to do than pay attention to them? I suppose not — they are focused, lasar like, on the “liberals” living in their heads.

Gotta go, apparently unlike them, I have stuff to finish.

How about that trip to France you took to meet with a sanctioned Iranian group, Mr. Giuliani?

I wonder what it’s like to make $3+ million/year over 5 years, tuck it into offshore accounts, some in a bank run in part by the present Secretary of Commerce and then launder it into the US and not pay income tax on what is clearly income.

That’s gotta be a rush!

That means he’d have to retire as Governor—being a Democrat, I suppose if he were a Republican, he wouldn’t have to. I’d like to see our King County Executive Dow Constantine move up, in that case—in the tradition of John Spellman and Gary Locke.

Funny how Spellman doesn’t seem so bad nowadays, innit?

I’ve only lived in WA for a year now, but Inslee seems the real deal. He’s got a lot of opportunities to work on foreign policy chops, with all our international trade, the major border crossings, collaboration with Canada on Salish Sea preservation issues, etc. He’s also been very strong in opposing Trump. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid today in Nebraska … the Nebraska State Patrol blocked the entrances so ICE could proceed.

O’NEILL, Neb. — Federal immigration enforcement officers swept into this rural area on Wednesday morning, detaining dozens of workers from a local tomato greenhouse complex, a potato processing facility and a cattle feedlot.

The operation by Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials snared 133 workers suspected of being in the country illegally, as well as 17 people connected to an alleged conspiracy to exploit illegal labor for profit, fraud and money laundering.

Federal search warrants were served as far away as Las Vegas and Minnesota in connection with the conspiracy. One man was led in handcuffs out of an O’Neill Mexican restaurant, and search warrants were also served at businesses or farms in Ainsworth, Bartlett, Royal and Stromsburg.

Tracy Cormier, special agent in charge of Homeland Security’s St. Paul, Minnesota, office, said the raid culminated 15 months of investigation and described the operation as one of the largest in Homeland Security Investigations’ 15-year history.

“I would say the amount of criminal warrants that are being executed will be one of the largest for HSI,” Cormier said. “I’m not aware of a bigger one.

“These targeted businesses were knowingly hiring illegal workers to unlawfully line their own pockets by cheating the workers, cheating the taxpayers and cheating their business competitors.”

Specifically, he said, illegal workers brought to the area were required to pay a fee to cash their paychecks, have taxes deducted that were not paid to the government, and were coerced into remaining quiet about the criminal activity.

I do not see the value in serving to protect racist statements. I am fine admitting that I’m not a free speech absolutist. It’s silly to me thinking about the elephant in the room hypocrisy of the founding docs and not being willing to admit they got some shit really wrong. Also, living breathing docs and all that.

Questioning these things is not popular, but we’re a young ass experiment relatively speaking. Hopefully we’ll be able to reconcile more one day.

We used to get a lot of European immigration, back when we were giving out free land to new immigrants. If you want to attract European immigrants now… universal healthcare would be something they’d like, or six weeks paid vacation a year, paid maternity leave, subsidized college. Y’know, the things they’re already getting if they stay where they are but they’d have to give up if they came here.

Immigrants only immigrate for one of two reasons — they’ll get stuff they can’t get where they are, or there’s something horrible they need to escape from where they are. Neither of those apply to Europeans (or Canadians or Australians) today.

That’s the nice thing about the Sacramento River Delta, it can get to 110 in the day in summer and night will still drop below 60. We rarely get 4 100 degree days in a row because the rising hot air in the central valley pulls the marine layer back inland to fill the void.

re: #66 JordanRules

While the west coast and inland have been cooking, weather here on the south Oregon coast has been fairly cool (low to mid 50’s at night, low to mid 60’s during the day). Last year we had smoke everywhere, scorched leaves falling from the sky and preparations for evacuation. This year we are swamped with people who live inland and are fleeing the heat, fires and smoke. We’ve been getting whiffs of smoke once in a while and one evening we had a light ash fall, but the most we are seeing of the fires this year is slightly orange/pink sunlight at times from high altitude smoke and particulates. Tonight it’s currently 56, foggy and the harbor buoy bell & horn are silent.

Inland and about 30 miles northeast from us, two fires (Klondike & Taylor Creek) have just about merged and both are far from being under control. California has two huge fires raging down there and looking at Inciweb it seems like the west side of the country is burning down.

“The two countries’ trade conflict, which is merely push and shove at the moment, is likely to escalate into more than just a scuffle if the U.S. administration cannot marshal its mobster mentality,” state newspaper China Daily said in an editorial.

“China continues to do its utmost to avoid a trade war, but in the face of the U.S.’s ever greater demand for protection money, China has no choice but to fight back,” it said.

They are being more honest about it and at the same time it’s become more acceptable in mainstream right wing circles to be explicitly against legal immigrants too. That’s not something I remember in the Bush years. And this again is why Bernie is wrong for the left given his immigration views.

Armando is correct. Hillary was portrayed as dishonest and evasive of the truth while Trump was sold as a straight shooter who told things as they were. HRC was the most honest of the candidates that ran. More honest than Trump for sure but also more so than Bernie, Kasich, and Cruz too but the media didn’t want to tell you that. If anyone should hate on the media the way Trump does, it should be HRC.

Manafort trial day 8 link.

10:01 a.m.: Judge Ellis begins court with mea culpa for outburst over expert

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III has raked prosecutors from the special counsel’s office over the coals for the past week and a half. But on Thursday, he backed down, telling jurors to ignore one piece of criticism.

“I was critical of counsel for … allowing an expert to remain in the courtroom,” he said before testimony began. “You may put that aside… I may well have been wrong.”

On Wednesday, Ellis scolded prosecutors for calling an IRS expert who has sat through the trial in the gallery. Prosecutors filed a motion Thursday morning pointing out that the transcript backed up their understanding that Ellis had explicitly allowed the expert to do so.

“The Court’s sharp reprimand of government counsel in front of the jury on August 8was therefore erroneous,” the prosecutors wrote. “And, while mistakes are a natural part of the trial process, the mistake here prejudiced the government by conveying to the jury that the government had acted improperly and had violated court rules or procedures. The exchange could very well lead the jury to reach two erroneous inferences: (a) that Mr. Welch’s testimony is not credible because he was improperly privy to the testimony of other witnesses, and (b) that the government sought to secure an unfair advantage by secreting its expert in the courtroom without permission…This prejudice should be cured.”

Ellis said Thursday that he had not actually read the transcript, which was attached to the government motion.

But, the judge said, “I was probably wrong.”

He added that he makes mistakes, “like any human — and this robe doesn’t make me any more than a human.”

He concluded, “Any criticism of counsel should be put aside — it doesn’t have anything to do with this case.”

If it were a singular moment in the proceedings, I might agree that he was giving the prosecutors a hard time for a honest mistake.

But this is a man who gave these same prosecutors the third degree weeks ago because of his personal opinions about the appointment of their boss and the authority he was granted, chewed out the prosecutors the other day for not moving the trial along fast enough, and the day before this incident made a prejudicial remark towards a prosecution witness while the jury was in the room. And I should also point out that he only chastised the defense once…for not objecting to a question from the prosecutor faster.

The one thing I think the judge did that was completely egregious was his comment about Manafort not watching that closely over the money, which gave an impression that maybe Gates did do everything and not Manafort. All the rest I can see, but that was really bad.

Judges with cranky opinions are not outside the norm. They’re outside what usually gets reported, but making sure every attorney within a couple of zip codes is acutely aware of a judge’s opinion is not rare at all.
For a judge to give the prosecution a hard time? Hell, I’m all for that, even with well-off defendants the state still has a huge resource advantage. I’m not about to suddenly veer away from that principle because I particularly dislike the defendant. Nor should you - that’s a very dangerous path.
I think someone here already mentioned making a case appeals-proof? The way you make sure a surefire case for the prosecution sticks is basically by making their life hard. And yes, maybe even a little too hard here and there.

Mourning And Instagramming The Death Of A Pet

In 1998, photographer Preston Gannaway and her college roommate answered a newspaper listing that advertised kittens. They drove out to a house on Egypt Road and found a man waiting in the driveway, carrying a kitten in each arm. Gannaway picked the one with short hair, because of allergies, and named her Isis because of the Bob Dylan song — “Isis, you mystical child” like the Egyptian goddess, not the terrorist group.

They lived together for almost 17 years.

Eh, younger leadership might not be a completely terrible idea. We are on the edge of a generational shift (the median age of the country is about 38), Pelosi has been in Congress for 30 years. Maybe it’s time to let the younger folks (relatively speaking) have a chance at leadership.

I can’t hear of Bruges without thinking of Dorothy Dunnett’s historical fiction series, The House of Niccolo, that starts there. It is followed chronologically by her earlier such series, The Lymond Chronicles. If it turns out you like her writing, reading both series can keep you going for a year. If not, IMO, your loss! Pelosi would do her party a favor by announcing that though she looks forward to being part of a Democratic majority, she thinks it’s time for a new leader, that she won’t stand for Speaker, and that she’s urging her fellow 75-and-over colleagues in leadership not do so as well.

if pelosi runs for speaker and loses, then clearly the party wants a new leader
if she wins, then clearly, the party wants her

this is a repetitively assinine argument

if you want ‘change’ - wehther its new young blood, policy or whatever, you dont pressure those currently in to not run
you run someone else against them
if you win, you’re right
if not, well…not enough people want what you want

Should I really need to point out that the GOP tried that with Ryan and he’s been an absolute disaster as a Speaker? No offense, but if there’s someone younger who can command the same level of respect as Pelosi can, then they are welcome to throw their hat into the ring.

Trump has been pro-asbestos since at least the 90s, even talked about it in one of his “books”:

As an amoral New York City real estate developer, Trump has long supported the use of asbestos. In his 1997 book The Art of the Comeback, the future president wrote that asbestos is “100 percent safe, once applied,” despite the overwhelming scientific evidence supporting the contrary.

Exactly. Ryan was touted as the GOP’s cool young face and now he’s leaving because he can’t lead. I’m fine if House Dems want a new leader but I don’t take Kristol seriously even if he’s right about Trump, he’s still wrong about nearly everything else.

Ryan never wanted the job though. There’s been plenty of reporting on that. He told the GOP caucus from the beginning that he wasn’t going to do the fundraising and other extracirculars that come with being Speaker. And as a result, he’s been terrible at the job.

If a younger Democrat replaces Pelosi as Speaker, it should be because the party has chosen to elect them to such a position, not because they fear that Republicans will continue to use her to scare the plebes into running from the Dem ticket.

Which really says a lot, that the job entails a lot of heavy lifting and cat-herding, not something that should go to someone “younger” just because we want to appeal to “younger” voters. I’m 33 and I don’t give a flying fuck how old the leadership of the party is, I care about how effective they are at their jobs.

The major parties will always run against the other party’s leadership. Democrats use Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell (and obviously Trump) as a stand in for why the Republicans are bad - there’s the whole bit about taking the gavel from Paul Ryan’s hand. So whoever is the next Democratic leader is going to get the same treatment.

At this point, every Dem in America should say they are running so that the Republicans can spend enormous amounts of time and money digging up dirt on everyone. The more they have to spend the less they will have.

I mean, they can go with their fallback MOST LIBERAL SOCIALIST EVAH! thing, but more and more people find the ultra scary Socialism okie dokie since it means that everyone benefits from government.

I disagree: a large number (whether majority, plurality or merely fanatic minority is an open question) of Americans have been conditioned by at least of century of unremitting hostile political propaganda to reflexively equate the term “socialism” with “communistic totalitarianism” devoted to brutally quashing “freedom”, and imposing a dictatorial regime of equality-of-misery regimentation for most.
Hypocritical bullshit as that might be (and of course the real power center in this country - Big Money - has long since learned to co-opt governmental processes for their own advantage), it’s still, I think, a label that politicians would do best to avoid: the occasional fringie (Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) isn’t a threat - but, regardless, trying to make “socialism” something other than a fear-shibboleth for most American voters is (IMO) an uphill climb the energy of which might better be conserved for other efforts.

ADD: This being the USA, I’d add that another component of the “socialism=communism” trope is that it envisions ” imposing a dictatorial regime of equality-of-misery regimentation for most white people

Except all commentary from actual experts I’ve seen on the judge is basically that the judge knows the prosecution has Manafort dead to rights and the judge wants to make sure the prosecution doesn’t make stupid mistakes that will open up an avenue for a successful appeal. Judges don’t like to have their cases over turned on appeal so when there is a slam dunk case such as this they want to make sure it stays that way.

And the one in #117 makes the case that Manafort is pretty much toast now. No more trial really needed, the tax records cooked him good.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

We’re nearly a year out from hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico and the USVI, and causing massive and widespread damage. Well, it turns out that the estimates of the death toll from the storm has quietly been updated to indicate a toll comparable to what happened during Hurricane Katrina.

The blood is on Trump’s hands for his depraved indifference to the plight of millions of Americans in Puerto Rico. He didn’t move heaven and earth to help. He held off on sending resources and made all kinds of excuses all while claiming he did an awesome job.

Reality is that the US Navy excels at logistics and moving all kinds of gear. Military Sealift Command helps make sure that the gear goes where it needs to and has the resources to get all kinds of gear. We have an Air Force that can quickly move heavy equipment and resources.

Neither was called upon in the numbers needed to restore basic services in anything resembling reasonable time. 6 months after Maria hit, many on the island were still without power. That’s unconscionable.

And the death toll reflects all this.

To Trump and the GOP, tax cuts were more important than making sure that Spanish speaking American citizens who don’t have congressional representation and aren’t likely to vote for the GOP anyways, got power restored. Instead, we got massive tax cuts and more than 1,000 Americans died in Puerto Rico due to lack of power and basic services.

Re: Ellis and his interactions with the prosecution case and what it means.

I’ve posted previously that I think this is all part of his effort to make the case appeal proof. Ken White (@popehat) has much more on the subject.

In fact, judges often snipe more at the side they expect to win. Even a simple criminal trial requires a judge to make dozens of discretionary decisions like what evidence to admit or exclude, how long to let the parties take with witnesses and the scope of permissible argument. Judges routinely cut the weaker side all of the breaks, hoping to make a bulletproof record for appeal when that side loses. Riding prosecutors and limiting their evidence doesn’t necessarily signal that Ellis thinks they’re in the wrong — it may signal that he thinks they’re likely to convict Manafort, and he wants to make the result as clean and error-free as possible.

Federal judges are appointed for life, and they surely know it. Impeachments or lesser punishments for bad behavior are extraordinarily rare. (So, for that matter, is openly negative feedback or constructive criticism.) They’re faced with crushing workloads and a parade of obstreperous lawyers of wildly varying ability. Judges who have presided over hundreds of trials can also develop strong views about exactly how cases should be tried, and some like Ellis strive to try litigants’ cases for them.

Plus, most important, they’re human.

Just because he’s nitpicking over X or Y and that the prosecutors should move on from the fact that “being rich isn’t a crime” was also signaling that prosecutors were potentially going overboard and that they got the point across and could be even more concise with the jury considering all the information being thrown at them.

Ellis is one of the rocket docket judges, and they tend to run through cases faster - and that too plays into things.

I don’t think this will affect the outcome; he like the prosecutors know that Manafort’s going to prison for the rest of his life. It’s just that he wants to make sure he stays there and is appeal-proof.

Nowadays it costs very little to maintain an Internet site, and the standards have also declined accordingly.

Reading through this DK diary about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez properly dealing with Andrew Cuomo. And she did a great job. But I had a thought. Her title of “the new face of the Democratic party” relies on the idea that she’s different from other Democrats. But there’s nothing that I could see in her talk with Cuomo that was different than what other Democrats say. They just don’t get to be on camera. What will happen to her once the media realizes that is she’ll no longer be getting appearances. They’ll talk about her, but not with her.

re: #228 gwangung

I think black folks know this already. They act on it, which is why Republicans are so hot to suppress black voters.

Not so sure other voting segments know this, though (particularly younger voters and white progressives).

I hope I wasn’t disparaging Black folks and their voting in my comment.

I have a few Black clients and a lot of friends and they are all older. They tell me the problem is getting the youth involved.

And that is a problem with everyone which is why I put “all” in parenthesis.

I think it was an issue in Ferguson back when the whole Michael Brown thing was going on and how the Black community was targeted for all kinds of things like parking tickets and other petty things to hassle them.

The win for the new prosecutor will hopefully give that community more help and motive to get more seats in their local and state governments.

I did something similar a few years back. I was between jobs living with my parents in their small PA town. I had to take Teddy to the vet for something very minor. The old-timey vet had his practice in the basement of his house (think 1950s décor). I was sitting in the waiting room when I woman came in with her little dog who had been hit by a car. We got to talking (and crying). She told me her husband had cancer and worried about the expense of medical treatment for her dog. When they called me in, I told her to go first. I didn’t really get a chance to talk to her again but overheard her asking for them to send her a bill.

After the vet finished with Teddy, I was paying the bill and told them that I wanted to pay for the women before me. At first they didn’t understand, so I slowly explained that I wanted to cover the cost of the woman’s vet visit. I figured if her dog needed further care this would help with the expenses. The bill wasn’t that big (about $40). Several days later, I received a card in the mail (I paid by check so the vet knew my address) thanking me and telling me how much this meant to her. The dog was going to be okay. Nothing was broken and the little one would just need some TLC. The best $40 I ever spent!!

From that Atlantic article:

[Obama] wanted to give the agency a set of explicit and rigid priorities for whom it would detain and deport. Previously, almost any undocumented immigrant had been fair game. Now Obama set about focusing ice’s efforts on serious criminals and recent arrivals. By the middle of his second term, the administration had figured out how to translate its priorities into bureaucratic reality. It supplied ice with clear procedures—with checklists and paperwork—to ensure that the organization hewed closely to the new goals.

The InfoWars app is now ranked fourth for “news” in Apple’s App Store (Quartz)

By Hanna Kozlowska August 7, 2018
After weeks of controversy surrounding the presence of Alex Jones and his conspiracy website InfoWars on major online platforms, Apple was the first major tech company to pull the trigger on the site’s controversial content. On Sunday, it took down five of six InfoWars podcasts from its iTunes and Podcast apps. Other tech companies, including Facebook and YouTube, followed suit with bans, citing their policies against hate speech.

But InfoWars, whose reach has been severely limited by these moves, still has a prominent platform with Apple: the InfoWars app is today (Aug. 7) ranked fourth among all free news apps on the company’s App Store. On Monday (Aug. 6), it was ranked 37th.

Well, it makes sense that people who really, really want to do something they honestly believe is a sin would think other people really, really want to do it too, and are just hiding it.
I don’t care if you’re attracted to same sex partners because a.) I don’t think it’s a sin, and b.) I’ve been in a happy heterosexual marriage for decades and am not tempted to cheat with anyone.

Pedophilia is different because it involves those who can’t give consent, and there are addictions that are harmful to those who have them, so those things are a bit different as well.

What if we’re the threat (humanity, not extraterrestrialists)? And that our future efforts blow our moon out of our own orbit and send it hurling off into space with a ragtag collection of humans, and we encounter life forms that are now threatened because our rogue moon has disrupted their existence. /

Seriously though yeah
the Mayflower
Santa Maria
Etc

Wonder if it would go as well this time

I have not been brought out of retirement, consulted, or even received so much as a letter or e-mail . Why have my loyal and successful efforts (Earth and its inhabitants are still here) been ignored by this supposedly new branch of the service? Did I work for nothing?

Enough With the Shit, Green Party. The Coming Midterms Are Too Important for Your Shenanigans

Let’s be clear, Green Party, at this point I’m convinced that you’re colluding with Russia just to piss America off. You’re the political equivalent of the guy who comes to basketball practice high and keeps missing free throws, causing the rest of us has to run suicides.

Fake Green Party Candidate Exposed as Having Ties to Republican Congressman

The former Green Party candidate in a congressional race has been exposed as a Republican plant with ties to the GOP congressman he supposedly sought to challenge

Michael Zak petitioned to run under the Green Party ticket in New York’s 27th congressional district, a seat currently held by Rep. Chris Collins. Zak’s candidacy petition listed as the official contact person Ross Kostecky, a local Republican operative who interned on Collins’s 2009 campaign for Erie County, New York executive, The Daily Beast has found.

These people are almost………….Russian in their lack of subtlety.
