In some ways, I think Trump resembles Nixon but in other ways, I think he’s unlike Nixon in the worst ways. I think Nixon genuinely did love the U.S even if he was crooked as hell. I don’t get that from Trump. I get a lot of fake patriot vibes from him.

Nixon loved the US and was very smart. He was also paranoid after 1960, and that’s probably where the real comparisons to Trump work.

re: #270 can’t think of a decent username

I don’t know if this has been posted elsewhere, but it’s a Reddit thread that’s fairly hilarious/infuriating.

The original poster deleted his post, but here’s a basic summary of how things went:

OP: “My brother died, and he was rich. He was gay, and our family doesn’t like gay people, so we kept the money he left to his partner in the will. Now his partner is suing us! How can we stop this!”

Redditors: “Hhhholy shit.”

That was priceless. Where did this take place? I’m going to have to set up a news alert.

My dad has a memory. Apparently Dan Quayle floated the waters in 2000. Dad thought it was the biggest joke the GOP could have and then they nominated and elected GWB. And now we have Trump. And apparently my grandfather was petrified by the idea of a Reagan presidency too.

The Borowitz report. Labeled as satire but we haven’t seen Mueller’s full report yet.
Republicans Projected to Pick up Seventy Seats in Prison

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a development that could dramatically change the composition of the federal penitentiary system, Republicans are projected to pick up as many as seventy seats in prison, a leading incarceration expert said on Thursday.

“Prognostication is an inexact science,” Davis Logsdon, who studies conviction rates of corrupt politicians for the University of Minnesota’s Guilt Project, said. “Having said that, if current indictment trends hold up, the Republicans could be flipping at least seventy key prison seats.”

Logsdon broke down criminal cases against Republicans into likely convictions, likely acquittals, and toss-ups, and found that the G.O.P.’s path to the magic number of seventy new prison cells was “very doable.”

Senior American national security officials, seeking to prevent President Trump from upending a formal policy agreement at last month’s NATO meeting, pushed the military alliance’s ambassadors to complete it before the forum even began.

The work to preserve the North Atlantic Treaty Organization agreement, which is usually subject to intense 11th-hour negotiations, came just weeks after Mr. Trump refused to sign off on a communiqué from the June meeting of the Group of 7 in Canada.

The rushed machinations to get the policy done, as demanded by John R. Bolton, the national security adviser, have not been previously reported. Described by European diplomats and American officials, the efforts are a sign of the lengths to which the president’s top advisers will go to protect a key and longstanding international alliance from Mr. Trump’s unpredictable antipathy.

I like Ford historically. Socially moderate to liberal, not a tax cuts above all type on the economy, and decent on FP. His judicial picks weren’t terrible either. He gave us Stevens and always defended him when wingers complained about him. Thank goodness we got Agnew out of office and we got Ford when Nixon resigned.

I think it also has to do with the nature of our system of government. Even if the GOP controls the House right now, the “real” “leader” of the party is the president. With a divided government, the calculus changes.

Very interesting. What I respect about H.W. Bush is how he wasn’t an ideologue on FP.

There was something I wrote when I co-blogged with a friend of mine about the ten most important elections of all time. I didn’t have 1960 but in hindsight I think I should have. I did have ‘68 but I do think 1960 is more consequential in the long run.

I think a lot of the 1960s go similarly if Nixon wins in 1960. We probably go into Vietnam (see: Korea) but perhaps a different strategy saves us all the losses we had. Nixon was pretty good on civil rights prior to 1960 and with JFK in the Senate we probably get solid civil rights laws. I also suspect a rematch in 1964, and a likely Kennedy win.

I don’t know what it means for the Southern Strategy, or what happens with Dixiecrats.

Well we were already in Vietnam in 1960. You are right about Nixon and CR. But yeah the domestic implications are what I wonder about. I’ve been on a Nixon binge the past couple weeks- reading a bio, watching movies, etc. I still don’t have a verdict on him.

I think it also has to do with the nature of our system of government. Even if the GOP controls the House right now, the “real” “leader” of the party is the president. With a divided government, the calculus changes.

Good point, but I also feel that it feeds into the time-honored trope of “Dems in disarray” that the media seem so fond of perpetuating. And again—with all the crap they sling about Pelosi, they’re awfully quiet about abuse-adjacent Gym.

Well as a Federal Civil Servant who started as a Stay In Schooler under Ford, I grade the Presidents I’ve served under:

Ford C
Carter C (because he railed against “big government”, pushed deregulation and began the weakening of the Civil Service with the “reform” act of 1978.
Reagan F (Corruption, letting Millken run wild, S&L’s looted, Iran-Contra, cut Social Security staffing by 1/3)
Old Man Bush B (He pushed for locality pay, tried to undo some of the damage Reagan did to our agency but increased our Civil Service deduction from 7% to 9%))
Clinton B+ (Purged ideologues from SSA, Ordered OPM to do a performance audit which reassessed our positions to higher grade levels)
Dumbya F(Pay freezes, limited locality pay raises, gave us new workloads such as Medicare D and didn’t hire additional staff)
Obama C (Froze our pay 3 years in a row, signed off on Social Security cuts, signed a bill cutting pensions for people under the old Civil Service system. Increased the amount workers pay into their pension system and didn’t increase the benefit)
Trump Z- (Installing ideologues in the agency, crippled Federal unions, Openly talking about contracting Social Security work out to H&R Block)

Since I was in a different branch of the government (the US Navy), I would adjust the grades slightly differently.

Carter: B (he pushed for and got a significant pay rise for enlisted personnel averaging about 17% in his second year, as salary for enlisted was still structured like we had a draft at the time).
Reagan: F- (he prohibited enlisted personnel from using government benefits such as food stamps, and proposed not paying the military in one budget showdown with the Democrats that had our officers pointing out in training sessions that if that happened we would still be required to work and not working would be considered mutiny. He also moved one military payday by executive order from the 30th of the month to the first of the month to avoid the appearance of a larger budget deficit when he was running for reëlection. Proposed privatising the VA - now a Republican staple)

I have no problem criticizing FDR’s actions or rather inaction on Civil Rights, it’s why I get annoyed by the left wing who just insists we need to be more like FDR again. Because we’re still part of the US even after the caucus. Obama and both Clintons came back, didn’t ignore Iowa afterward.
I know there are a lot of people who don’t like Iowa being first, that we don’t deserve it because we’re rural and a so-called flyover state. That’s an opinion. But as an Iowan I’m allowed to be annoyed by opportunists using us, thinking we’re rubes, wearing ($500) jeans, staging photo opps with corn dogs at the Iowa State Fair, pretending to listen, pretending to care, and then pretending we don’t exist.

I can relate, being in Nebraska. Candidates don’t usually bother with us at all.

Rs look at us as five guaranteed electoral votes, Ds look at us as a lost cause and don’t bother. (That paradigm was upended when then-candidate Barack Obama came here in 2008 and won in the election one of our electoral votes.)

The plane is cool, but even if Copeland’s story was true, it would be an unconvincing reason to believe in his idea of a god.

I will never forgive Reagan for his racism with a smile bs.

Yup, opening his campaign on the site of slain civil rights workers, and laying a wreath at the graves of Nazi SS soldiers in West Germany.

The GOP has been this way all my life. (Eisenhower was President when I was born. I understand his desire to avoid a one-party state as the GOP was in collapse during his time, based on his experiences in the Army in Europe. Our nation has been through one party periods before … they result in another party arising.)

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”

I can’t agree with that, and I’m a nonbeliever, an agnostic.

There is a huge difference between churches that offer sanctuary to the most vulnerable and those that have been weaponized as apologists for the far-right and alt-right, or are simply organizations designed to remove money from parishioner’s pockets to profit the preacher’s bottom line.

I respect people of faith who follow the path of peace and grace. I understand it, but don’t practice it, because I don’t personally believe in it.

That’s just my belief system. I know this is a hugely emotional issue, and there is no way that it can be reconciled. But punishing the good for the transgressions of others is just not righteous.

The point of tax exemptions for churches is that churches often fulfill charitable functions which the government cannot or may not be aware of.

Most of the functions of many churches serve no such charitable function (for example, the Lutheran Church across the street from my house does no charity work whatsoever; all funds go into the church or its pastor). It owns one-eighth of the village property and pays no property taxes (which hurts the whole village).

A proposal might be for a church to file an IRS Form 990 detailing all income and expenditures - which would make identifying actual charitable work simpler. Nearly every church is opposed to revealing their finances (can’t imagine why). The Satanic Temple files a Form 990 and pays taxes (even though as a church they are not required to). Unlike a lot of churches, they actually do charity work.

Our last state governor Dave Heineman (R) proposed repealing the property tax exemption on church property that was not used for a charitable purpose. The howl from every last church from Omaha to Scottsbluff was deafening … he backed down mighty quickly. (That alone should tell you that churches have too much power in our state government.)

That church emphasises that guns should not be required in a house of God; other LDS churches in the area are insisting that guns carried by parishioners are necessary (7:24).

Wingnuts of course are insisting that concealed carry is the only thing to prevent this. (Spoiler, it wouldn’t have prevented it. It was a planned murder. The shooter was apprehended after a standoff at his home.)

Bernie Sanders is not a DSA member. He is no more interested in working within the DSA than he is within the Democratic Party (despite being in Congress for a very long time). Ocasio-Cortez is a member, but is a brand-new member of Congress and I doubt has a whole lot of influence over elections outside her district.

Neither one of them had anything to do with either of my election victories, and I doubt CNN, Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, or anyone else outside my town, the Nebraska Democrats, and the Nebraska DSA will care whether I win or lose reëlection.

Dumps America

From the article at Think Progress about the incident:

The article from a right-wing site called Big League Politics linked in [Corey] Stewart’s tweet read in part, “Under Sharia Law, women are considered property of their husbands, gays are murdered, and adulterers can be stoned to death. According to a former Muslim and expert on Sharia Law, El-Sayed was practicing ‘Taqiya’ to further the cause of Islam in America.”

Mr. Stewart hasn’t read his own holy book then, which promotes the same things.

Ah, the ol’ Republic of Gilead gambit.

Yeah…….no fucking thanks.

I been on this hobbyhorse before, but ever since Reagan courted the Fundies in 1980 and then dumped them as soon as Nancy’s house astrologer told her the stars were propitious, the conservative Christians started to insinuate their people into all levels of government and public life: administration, schools, the military, etc.

Mike Pence represents their ultimate achievement: a True Believer a heartbeat (or a Democratic majority) away from the Presidency.

Yet another fundy preacher-perv busted. Does any rational person doubt that Q-anon and pizzagate are entirely about projection?
pervy pastor Pastor who hates gay people busted for soliciting gay minor for gay sex… again

67-year-old Timothy Lee Reddin is the pastor at Turner Street Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he regularly preaches about the evils of homosexuality. He was busted on August 3 after engaging in sexy talk on a website with someone he believed was a 14-year-old boy.

Turns out, that little boy was actually an undercover cop.

Reddin arranged to meet the child for sex. When he arrived at the meeting spot, he was met by officers.

Police also say they made contact with Reddin a few days earlier on another website, on July 27.

KARK-4 reports:

“Lee” described himself in his profile as a 62-year-old white male, 6’1″, 215 pounds and married. The profile description said, “I just wanna have fun…I like younger guys. But hell, at my age that’s just about everybody! Discreet, intelligent, witty, professional guy. Love to meet new friends. Especially naked ones,” according to the affidavit.

They are talking about it … the Nebraska Democratic Party sent out an E-mail yesterday noting they will be bringing this up in statewide debates and such.

The press is covering Trump blaming Democrats for his policy, burying Democratic responses way down articles.

cnbc.com (Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton calling it out)

rollingstone.com (on Jeff Merkely’s bill to outlaw the practice of family separation)

snopes.com (calling out Trump’s lie that the Democrats passed a law in 1997 requiring family separation)

&c

The problem is the press can publish Democratic statements and outrage, but you can’t lead conservatives to read. They believe what they believe because they want to believe it. They have been well-trained by decades of propaganda.

Well, at least conservatives are being honest about immigrants now: they want to ban them all, not just the “undesirable” ones. They’re still pushing for retroactive stripping of citizenship and removing birthright citizenship as well (I warned last year they would try the last - when I brought up the last to our village attorney before a board meeting, he was convinced that wouldn’t happen).

Tropical Storm Warning has gone up for Johnston Atoll as Hurricane Hector has intensified once again to a category IV storm.

prh.noaa.gov

Johnston Atoll has been used in the past for nuclear tests and for storing and destroying chemical munitions. The atoll is contaminated with plutonium and other radionuclides, as well as chemical contamination from mustard gas and PCBs. It was also used for biological warfare games against Navy target vessels.

Hurricane Hector has intensified to 130 mph and is projected to pass 100 to 200 miles from the island.

Johnston was the chosen launch site for Orion, the nuclear bomb propelled spacecraft. Structurally, the vehicle had more in common with ships than with aircraft or other rockets, so it was to be built by Electric Boat in their covered submarine building facility at Groton, then barged to Johnston.

Yes, our bassist is a serious computer nerd (pointy ears and all) and he would put our band dates in that format.

I had to convince him that to normal people, the Day of the Week is most important,:
Friday, August 10th.

We also had a disagreement with him once when a place told us that the bands start at 9pm on weeknights and 10pm on weekends, because as he insisted, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday only.

I pointed out that in the purely logical sense that is true, but for most normal people, the Weekend begins when work ends on a Friday.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Our latest heat wave appears to have broken and today is less humid than it’s been. We get a day reprieve before rain comes in and the humidity returns next week. I can deal with that.

What I can’t deal with is right wing extremists who continually caterwaul about voter fraud, and then when you start looking closely you see that they’re engaging in election fraud and are quite possibly breaking state and federal laws in the process.

And yes, I’m talking about Kris Kobach, whose actions in Kansas primary elections reek. The DOJ should launch an investigation into his actions to see if he violated federal law in misinforming local election officials about the rules.

What’s particularly funny (in a pathetic kind of way) is that Kansas GOPers wanted this guy because he was going to suppress voter turnout. Turns out he was suppressing his fellower GOPers who didn’t vote for him.

You then admit the meeting was to get dirt on Clinton, which is a clear violation of federal law. You then claim it isn’t collusion but since Clinton did it, she should be investigated because that’s a crime.

All this projection and deflection (including the Space Force replacing Infrastructure Week) doesn’t hide fact that his corrupt and complicit admin is fleecing taxpayers, is corrupt as fuck (and the GOP is rife with corrupt fuckers who think they can get away with it - from Rep. And yet the media wants to focus on the distinct minority of Democrats who think someone else should be speaker?

This is where the media wants to focus? The most powerful woman in the country should be replaced why exactly?

Even the story shows how flimsy all this is - it’s about generating opposition against those Democrats in vulnerable districts by GOPers. The Democrats want to win those seats, and will run “against her” but wont actually step up and oppose her leadership.

re: #308 lawhawk

So, let me get this straight - Democrats are on pace to likely retake the House. Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader, and former Speaker of the House, would be in line to take the gavel again.

The media and Republicans but I repeat myself seem to have an inordinate interest in the makeup of the Democratics congressional leadership.

It’s…a little weird. I don’t quite see the same level of interest in the GOP leadership.

Looks like Space Force might end up being Space Farce.

It is hard to believe that this is a serious proposal.

…First, because the entire defense establishment hates it….
…Second, because nobody seems to be able to explain why a space force would be necessary.
…Third, and perhaps most significantly, Donald Trump allowed Mike Pence to make the announcement. If there was any chance this was going to happen, or even any chance that the announcement would generate some positive publicity, you can bet Trump would have made the announcement himself.

So, what is going on here? It’s possible that the administration is putting this out there so that they have something to “concede” when discussing the next budget…
However, it appears primarily to be a fundraising move. Moments after Pence made his announcement, folks on the Trump e-mail list got a mail blast with potential Space Force logos for them to vote on…

These are so comically bad that they look to have been cooked up for the latest remake of Total Recall….

Once Team Trump has collected another million or two for the re-election campaign, odds are pretty good we don’t hear much more about the Space Force.

It is this sort of behavior that stops too many world leaders from calling him out. They are really scared as to what his bullying will do to their people.

You nuts keep projecting the corruption onto the investigators. People who conspired against the United States are being brought down. Liberals and Conservatives agree that’s right and good. Mad Trumpists try to deflect for criminals.

When the results of the investigation come out, the GOP will have to choose between acting on it or appearing complicit in the crimes it describes.

The more dirt they can dump on it, the more chance they have to discredit it and fail to act on it without seeming complicit.

Manafort trial du jour linky.

10:45 a.m.: Special counsel again asks judge to tell jury he was wrong

Perhaps emboldened by their small victory Thursday, when Judge T.S. Ellis III conceded he was “probably wrong” to lambaste the special counsel for doing something he allowed them to do, prosecutors in the Paul Manafort trial have now asked him to tell the jury to ignore another of his intemperate comments.

On Thursday, after Assistant U.S. Attorney Uzo Asonye walked a banker through a $5.5 million loan negotiation with Paul Manafort that ended in rejection, the judge cut in with skepticism.

“You might want to spend time on a loan that was granted,” he said.

When Asonye protested that the attempt to get that loan constituted one of the bank fraud conspiracy charges against Manafort, Ellis responded harshly, “I know that.”

“The Court’s statement that the government ‘might want to spend time on a loan that was granted’ misrepresents the law regarding bank fraud conspiracy, improperly conveys the Court’s opinion of the facts, and is likely to confuse and mislead the jury,” prosecutors wrote in their filing Friday morning. “The Court should provide a curative instruction in order to avoid any potential prejudice to the government.”

Defense attorneys in other cases have pointed to similar comments from Ellis when challenging guilty verdicts in the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. But prosecutors cannot appeal a not-guilty verdict, and so the special counsel has begun challenging Ellis mid-trial.

It’s true! The level of corruption that permeates The Mueller investigation is staggering.

If Trump and Gang would stop being corrupt and obstructing, Mueller might actually be able to get to the end of this mess.

Stop creating more and more stuffs to investigate and it would stop Mueller from adding to the investigation.

One of the other issues Nancy Pelosi might be causing for conservatives is they are staring at losing a whole bunch of White women in elections due to Trump.

I think that was borne out in the Ohio D12 election. It appears the biggest percentage loss for Balderson were White women from upscale suburbia.

Nancy speaks to those women. That makes her dangerous because no one in the GOP does. Certainly Trump, Pence, McConnell, Ryan…even Murkowski and Collins do not speak for women.

Lawhawk, any insight?

11:33 a.m.: Manafort trial, with bench conferences and no witnesses, pauses for lunch

Paul Manafort’s trial will not resume until 1:45 p.m. Friday, though the reason for the delay is not precisely clear.

As the trial resumed around 9:45 a.m., Judge T.S. Ellis III summoned lawyers for both sides to his bench for a conference that was blanketed by white noise. The jurors were not yet in the courtroom. He then took a short break - about 10 minutes — and returned to the courtroom for another bench conference.

That conference was somewhat lengthier, and the judge summoned the court security officer to join the lawyers. The judge seemed to talk with the court security officer as the lawyers listened.

Ellis then declared another recess, though before he left court, he issued a strange warning to those gathered, “You cannot look and see what’s on counsels’ tables, without their permission of course.” He left to the side of the courtroom where the jurors usually gather, which is different from where he usually exits.

The judge said the break would take about 15 minutes, though it was substantially longer. At about 10:35 a.m., one of the judge’s staff members emerged to gather the board used during jury selection.

At 11:07 a.m., Ellis came back and seemed to call the case as usual. “All right, bring the jury in, please,” he said.

All 16 jurors came in.

“A belated good morning to you,” Ellis said. He told the panel he planned to call the roll as normal, but then have an early lunch break so he could consider other matters.

“We are going to continue with the evidence in this case in the afternoon,” Ellis said.

Ellis’s clerk called each juror by their number, and all said they were present. As he does each morning, Ellis asked the group if they had been able to avoid talking to anyone about the case or doing their own investigation. They said they had. Then Ellis delivered a lengthier admonition.

“It’s very important that you not discuss the case with anyone,” he said. He noted that Manafort had a “presumption of innocence,” and jurors should be keeping an open mind until the case was complete.

“Keep an open mind until all the evidence is in,” Ellis said.

With that, the jurors left. The panel - which has usually entered the courtroom smiling or even laughing - seemed more stone faced than usual. Ellis offered no explanation to the public for what had happened. The trial is expected to resume at 1:45 p.m.

some yeah, but generally, nope
assholes speed, cut you off - just like they do in cars
assholes dont take 30 seconds to check their fuel tanks before taking off and *run out of gas*?!?!

teaching scuba, especially to couples, where the (generally) female didnt really want to be there, i’d say as preparation and a warning - people dont change when their personalities get wet. your man will behave underwater just the way he does at home.

seen it time and time again

there are lots of assholes and idiots in this world
You work with them
You work *for* them
they’re driving the cars around you
They operate on you
They prepare and serve your food
They prescribe drugs
drive ubers
attorneys
cops
and they get elected and appointed judges
some get confirmed for the supreme court, or to run cabinet agencies
some people vote for them for president
and on and on

High profile case and it’s possible that questions came up about a juror(s) contact with what was on the legal counsel’s table - seeing evidence or information that was not privy to be seen by the jury, etc.

I think that was basic stuff, but there may have been some indication that a juror might be having contacts with outside persons that would change their views.

Again, this is all about making sure the record is appeal proof and that everyone is adhering to the rules. We don’t want jurors engaging in nullification. We also don’t want them to treat someone as guilty before they’ve seen/heard the entire case.

Hey, I’m a lawyer not on the case, and I am entitled to my opinions that Manafort is guilty as fuck, but those on the jury must retain the presumption of innocence and review the evidence as the jury deliberates. That’s what Ellis is trying to do.

This article is nuts.

Jeff Strohl’s stomach dropped when he checked his mail on July 21.

“I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife and everyone else,” a mysterious letter read. “More importantly, I have evidence of what you’ve been hiding.”

The letterwriter, GreySquare15, threatened to expose a secret — unless Strohl wired the sender $15,750 in bitcoin.

“First, it’s disbelief. Then, a sinking feeling in your stomach — you search your soul and say ‘What have I done? What secret is actually damning?’ ” Strohl said. “Then, you recognize, I don’t have anything that’s gonna bother me if other people knew.”

“I was concerned because of what information he might have that he could use against me,” said Sam Steinberg, a 76-year-old resident of Chevy Chase who received an extortion email last month containing an old username and password. “If he was ever to get the passwords to my bank account or to my investment account, it could be a disaster.”

Ames said people should be wary of what they share online and should never pay off the scammer. Instead, he advised victims to contact local law enforcement and report the incident to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

So, let me get this straight - Democrats are on pace to likely retake the House. Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader, and former Speaker of the House, would be in line to take the gavel again.

Note that the stenographers give Republicans a pass and don’t ask them if Gym Jordan should be Speaker!

Father, Son Charged With Killing Mother Bear And ‘Shrieking’ Cubs In Their Den

A father and son have been charged with several crimes after they allegedly shot a mother bear and her crying newborn twins inside their Alaska den, authorities said.

The men’s actions were captured on a motion-activated video camera installed by wildlife officials who were tracking the mother bear.

Owen Renner, 18, was seen on the video shooting the mother black bear in April on Esther Island in Prince William Sound, said police. According to a sworn summary of events by police that was filed in court, the “cubs begin shrieking in the den after the initial shots are fired,” The Anchorage Daily News reported Wednesday.

His father, Andrew Renner, 41, then took “aim through his rifle scope only feet away and fires several more shots, killing the newborn bear cubs,” per the court documents. He was also seen on video saying: ‘It doesn’t matter. Bear down,’” authorities said.

Fucking monsters.

Let’s see. Oscenio-Cortez, someone who got her party’s nomination for Congress. Kirk, Owens, and Shapiro. Three people who just go around spreading right wing talking points and having their admirers insist that they DESTROYED the left. I don’t blame Alexandria. This wouldn’t have been a debate. This would have been Ben Shapiro doing what Ben Shapiro deos and that’s talking down to someone that’s more intelligent than him while trying to liken Oscenio-Cortez’s DSA ideology to Venezuela and even the Nazis.

Well, I did it. I finally told my brother on FB that the post he shared back in 2016, “Choose peace and vote for Jill Stein. Trust me, it’s not a wasted vote,” that it was from the Russian social media campaign, from “Blacktivist”, a fake group set up to divide the left and help Trump win.

What convinces me is I remember the handle, “Blacktivist”, and that particular turn of phrase. That stuck in my memory. I even argued with him in the comments.

As far as I’m concerned, Kevin pretty much proved Dinesh’s entire argument wrong with primary sources. You don’t need a debate for that. Just facts and Kevin had/has the facts on his side. Dinesh should go back to screwing Coulter and Ingrarham and leave the historical discussion to actual historians rather than the right wing’s attempt at Michael Moore.

Am I wrong in wanting a candidate who has the boldness to say I’m not a capitalist or a socialist, I’m a person, sometimes I think socialism is right and there are things that only the government should control, sometimes I think capitalism is right and think there are only things that the market should, and sometimes it can eb both. That’s how I feel. I’m not a capitalist nor am I a socialist. I pay taxes to maintain a state police force, fire department, EMTs but I also enjoy being able to choose between products when I want to stream media, download music, travel, etc and I also like that I have my choice of airlines but I also appreciate how the FAA does a great job making sure my plane takes off and lands safely.

My Idiot Brother and My Idiot Sister keep trying to tell me that Progressives need something to vote FOR, not just something to vote AGAINST, so I listed the things the Democratic Party stands for - strong social safety net; marriage equality; voting rights; higher minimum wage; action on the climate and the environment generally; regulating Wall Street; higher taxes on the rich; more money for education.

“Nobody votes for the Party Platform”, My Idiot Sister said.

It goes on and on. But what they never seem to get is that we’re saying the same thing: they say that Progressives need to have their votes won, that they need something to vote for, and that ‘voteshaming’ them for voting for Stein in 2016 will only drive them away.

I say that Progressives need a Shiny Thing, that they’re flaky and unreliable, and that they’re unwilling to be held responsible for their votes.

We’re saying the same thing about Progressives, but they say it nicer and they think Progressives are right to be that way. I don’t.

The usual rules apply: Frequently change passwords, don’t use the same password on sites which are important (such as banking or other sites with personal information), make sure your computer wears a condom (or several) when using the Internet, cover your video camera except when using it, disable your microphone except when using it, &c.

The E-mail in question is written in such a way to scare people into sending Bitcoin to the scammer (I’ll release video of all your personal habits watching porn to your friends and family).

Ok.

Hard lesson in politics Renee. Try to learn from it. And next time…do a little research into the candidates.

I’m sure it’s true that some people are more likely to vote if they’re inspired. But the thing is, I don’t need to respect that. I don’t need to think that’s a justifiable thing.

I mean, a number of folks on the Right who HATED Trump, and everything he stood for and promised, but voted for him ONLY because of the Supreme Court and the Judiciary. The Right works like that. They will go out and vote every time, whether they like the candidate or not. I hate everything they stand for, but I wish to god the Left had that level of commitment.

We saw how they got the House in 2010, Senate in 2014, and then Presidency two years ago. I’m tired of the left not understanding how the game works and then acting surprised that the establishment doesn’t take them seriously.

I bet a lot on the Left think their strategy is working; they are willing to put up with four years of Trump to keep a Clinton out of the WH and move the Democrats to the Left. For example, The Obamacare exchanges would be working pretty well if Clinton was President, but Trump’s sabotage is moving the Party toward supporting Medicare-for-all.

re: #614 JordanRules

I think this vote for or against something is just a silly talking point now that folks deploy as needed. It does sound good, but doesn’t really make a lick of sense.

I’m proud of the things I’m voting against too.

Political Parroting.

I hate it.

Me, I vote for the candidates that aren’t pure slime. The Republicans have offered nothing but for many an election cycle in my opinion.

It will not make a difference. The n-word tapes are still The Apprentice tapes that his fellow asshole Mark Burnett refuses to release. Omarosa was just confirming. She said she has tapes too but they aren’t the n-word tapes.

Research indicates about 24 million Americans fully share the views of the alt-right (Identify strongly as white, believe in white solidarity and believe whites are being victimized). Obviously millions more share at least two of those beliefs. There are your deplorables, the Trump Base.

I know that, its the independents and to energize Democrats. Also many Republicans really are discouraged, and I’d like more of the suburban GOP women who like tax cuts but not racism to either sit home or vote Democratic in November.
