LYRICS

You always pick up your phone, asleep, with friends, alone
The weirdest times I call you, you’re there, glowing, in my dark room

I don’t always understand the things I do
Maybe it’s best if I never figure out the truth
Learned the names of all your stuffed animals
In too deep now everywhere I feel the bedroom walls
Never be desperate they always said
But getting something while you’re desperate feels the best

You always pick up your phone, asleep, with friends, alone
The weirdest times I call you, you’re there, glowing, in my dark room

People still retread tires? I haven’t heard of that for 30 years at least.

(For passenger cars—I know they retread truck tires. Repeatedly.)

Repost from end of last thread regarding the insult that a “bartender from Queens” doesn’t want to debate a Harvard Law grad:

Maybe the Harvard Law grad should roll up his sleeves and engage in public service instead of strictly using his amazing educational background to snipe from the sideline.

I keep thinking about the old Jesse Unruh quote about lobbyists…

If you can’t eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women, and take their money then vote against them, you don’t belong up here

Unruh for those that don’t know was the long time Democratic Speaker of the California Assembly. The state’s Civil rights law was named for him

A Manhatten is ALWAYS made with rye whiskey. Otherwise, it’s a Bourbon drink.

And don’t get me me started on “Martinis”. A Martini is made of gin, dry vermouth, and olives on a stick. If you replace the olives with pickled onions, it’s a Gibson.

A vodka Martini isn’t a Martini. It’s a vodka cocktail.

An Appletini isn’t. A Melontini isn’t. Anything other than gin, dry vermouth, and olives on a stick isn’t a Martini.

And get the fuck off of my lawn.

How come a gin gimlet is a gimlet, and a vodka gimlet is a vodka gimlet, but a tequila gimlet is a margarita and a rum gimlet is a daiquiri? You can’t explain that!

We have obviously lost our way. A Gimlet is two parts gin and one part lime juice.

Full stop.

Passengers report stolen SeaTac plane, grounded flights

The man’s name was “Rich,” according to tower audio and, at one point, he told the tower he was losing an engine. Periodically, his voice cut into the dispatches. At one point, “Rich” (or “Rick”), said on the aviation audio, “This is probably jail time for life, huh? I would hope it is for a guy like me.” People on Twitter who were following the aviation audio reported that the man attempted a “barrel roll” with the plane at one point - or at least claimed he was going to do so.

Jesus Christ.

Crime rates and absolute number of crimes are very different. Smaller city, smaller absolute number of crimes, but my city has a higher crime rate therefore it is more dangerous.

Also…you said 60. 44 is not 60.— jay

I use the town in my county where a murder and car arson occurred in 2012 when I have to demonstrate the difference between crime rates and absolute numbers.

Angora has a population of one. In 2012, it had a murder and a car arson. (The one person who lives there was not a victim or the perpetrator.)

Therefore, in 2012, Angora had a 100% rate of murders and car arsons.

In normal years, the rate is 0%.

In 2000 I was disenfranchised (homeless) so I couldn’t vote. That said, McCain would have been out for me over the Keating 5 scandal by itself (never mind picking Sarah Palin as his running mate).

Yesterday I linked to a story that said 23 million Americans agree with the alt-right on three things: they strongly identify as white, they believe in white solidarity and they think whites are being victimized. The link was updated to indicate it was a math error and only 11 million people agree on all three points. That still means there are millions more who believe in two out of the three.

This goes back a long time but it has acquired a new dimension in the Internet, which is an egalitarian environment where one opinion or point of view is seen to be as good as any other.

That is not how things work in science, history or even in objective, professional journalism, but that is something that is lost due to a lack of basic education on scientific, historical and journalistic methods.

My working assumption when dealing with Holocaust deniers has for quite some time been that they know their denial is deception, that the only reason they do it is to try to create a condition where they can “finish the job” so to speak.

There are cynical manipulators among them, others are simply bloody-minded contrarians and devils’ advocates, while others are willing to be deceived in order to find “facts” to fit the ideological narrative they support.

These white conservatives, they’re all mad, pissed off, they have no idea why and they don’t care. Pissed off is an identity, the identity, of modern conservatives. They’re always mad about something, always certain they are being attacked, diminished, made lesser somehow, under assault, being invaded and violated.

It’s who they are.

Trump says unemployment is the lowest in history? The only jobs that are unfilled are the ones nobody wants? They’re still mad about jobs. Immigrants, yeah, they’re taking our jobs! Those filthy bastards!

Trump tells you the GDP is the highest in history, the economy is booming like never before, the stock market is at an all time high, taxes are low, wages are up and companies are handing out bonuses! That’s what he says. His supporters are mad. They’re taking our money! Impose those tariffs! It’s those bad trade deals! Screw Europe! Screw China! They’re bleeding us dry, man! It’s so unfair! A week ago, the federal government halted work on a massive pipeline project that runs from Northern West Virginia through Southern Virginia.

The government said it had no choice but to order work on the multibillion-dollar Mountain Valley Pipeline stopped after a federal appeals court ruled that two federal agencies had neglected to follow important environmental protections when they approved the project.

The court had found that the U.S. Forest Service had suddenly dropped — without any explanation — its longstanding concerns that soil erosion from the pipeline would harm rivers, streams and aquatic life. It also found that the Bureau of Land Management approved a new construction path through the Jefferson National Forest, ignoring rules that favor sticking to existing utility rights-of-way.

“American citizens understandably place their trust in the Forest Service to protect and preserve this country’s forests, and they deserve more than silent acquiescence to a pipeline company’s justification for upending large swaths of national forestlands,” Judge Stephanie Thacker wrote for a unanimous ruling from a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. “Citizens also trust the Bureau of Land Management to prevent undue degradation to public lands by following the dictates” of federal law.

It turns out, those weren’t the only times state and federal regulators bent environmental standards for the project, which began construction in February.

That way lies giving a newly-minted president a Nobel Peace Prize based not upon his accomplishments in the area of peace but because of expectations of such. I’m not about to throw out a proven effective leader for a younger one because “She has so much potential!” I direct you to “Policy Wonk” Ryan who has made an utter hash of his Speakership since John of Orange jumped ship. People look on accounting as something that is practical and absolute, just adding up figures. But especially modern accounting has nothing to do with the traditional ways of bookkeeping in brick-and-mortar factories that owned their own equipment and premises.

Now it is all about goodwill, licensing and leasing.

The practical measure of effective is literally “GETS SHIT DONE”.

Pelosi still actually gets shit done.Even when in the minority, she’s set up dozens of own-goals by Ryan and Boehner. She should only be replaced with someone who can actually get more shit done, not over notions of what ideas just might maybe get done by someone else.

I haven’t raised the bar, Pelosi has through years of hard work as an advocate for the party as well as numerous causes. If you’re going to replace her, you need more than just “She’s too old.” Otherwise you’re just lowering the bar so someone “younger” can get over it.

No, the bar is NOT that high.

Be effective. That’s a good bar.

Now. Name someone who is effective. Name people who can politick and gather people around objectives. THAT is the list of candidates to be Speaker. (And be aware that Pelosi is on that list)

re: #305 Targetpractice

That way lies giving a newly-minted president a Nobel Peace Prize based not upon his accomplishments in the area of peace but because of expectations of such. I’m not about to throw out a proven effective leader for a younger one because “She has so much potential!” I direct you to “Policy Wonk” Ryan who has made an utter hash of his Speakership since John of Orange jumped ship. You can argue (as some have to me) that he didn’t want the job and so isn’t really taking it seriously. But that’s only more damning, not less.

You can also argue that the “policy wonk” descriptor was one made of whole cloth:

Ryan offers sweeping, ambitious ideas that would radically transform the fundamentals of America’s social contract. Then, when genuine policy wonks point out that Ryan’s numbers don’t add up, or that his ideas would have absurd consequences, Ryan often responds with a new proposal that is just like the first — only vaguer.

thinkprogress.org

For too long, reporters have been bamboozled by Ryan, who claims to be a both a budget expert and something of a social philosopher. But he’s just a slick talker who appears to have flunked basic math in high school or college, because his budget numbers never add up.

Bon jour! We finally shook the jet lag and got out into Brussels. Hot damn, what a beautiful city. We got to Brussels Palace and St. Michael’s Cathedral, both spectacular.

Then we had lunch in a spot in Grand Place, and a damn bee drowned himself in the sauce for my beef stroganoff. I ate it anyway (the stroganoff, not the bee). The waiter cracked that at least he didn’t charge me extra.

I took so many pictures. I could see myself living here, it’s just gorgeous.

I recall a question on an Army test for prospective infantry squad leaders that asked “do you give the M-60G to that new hot shot who might be a really good Gunner or does it go that Assistant MG that has shown himself to be steady?”
The answer they wanted was “go with the proven steady guy”.
Now this was Doctrine from the people who thought that the highest Duty was to the Mission.

Which is pretty much the best argument for Pelosi that I can think of.

Two thoughts on Pelosi before I log off to do some writing.

1) This is not high school. I want an experienced person to be third in line. If something happens (impeachment) to the POTUS and Vice. We need experience. A lot of shit IS going to happen if the Democrats take over the house in January. Experience is one of our few assets. It’s going to get very ugly (pardons, refusing to listen to Judges, etc.).

2) 50% of Democrats want someone to replace Pelosi. What percentage of American Citizens want to replace Trump? Does it only count when it’s a woman in charge? Or a Democrat? Again, it’s not a high school popularity contest.

off to writing.

No, the bar is NOT that high.

Be effective. That’s a good bar.

Now. Name someone who is effective. Name people who can politick and gather people around objectives. THAT is the list of candidates to be Speaker. (And be aware that Pelosi is on that list)

The best place to look for new congressional leadership, the best place to train people for new leadership, is committee chairs (and ranking members) who did a good job on hearings and investigations — people whose demonstrable skill set is in line with the core objectives.

There’s a reason record company presidents almost always come from the A&R division; it’s never anybody from accounting or legal or distribution.

Just for myself, I wouldn’t be too upset to see Nancy Pelosi passed over for Speaker in favor of someone more effective, but OTOH, I wouldn’t be bothered by seeing Ms. Pelosi back in the big chair, either. “Effective” is the key word here: assuming Democrats will control the House in the 116th Congress, they are going to have an uphill battle no matter what, given that the White House will still be occupied by an egomaniacal incompetent (who is either the leader or tool of rightwing radicals), and have a GOP Opposition even more obsessive and obstructionist than before. If “[more] old school” means operating to maximize legislative efficiency rather than promoting an ideological agenda, so be it. I think the primary goal of the 116th Congress ought to be to try to limit or mitigate the damage the Trump Administration can, or will want to inflict on the country. Lefty wishlists can wait.

This. It’s still a bit early to speculate, but if the Democrats get control of even one House of Congress (the Senate is another matter entirely), “a lot of shit” is likely to be a huge understatement of what is going to be going on with this country’s government.

Trumps and the GOP admins antics are having effects far beyond the borders of the US:
The Local: Swedish Nazi arrested for planned murder of journalists

A member of Sweden’s neo-Nazi party the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) has been arrested after police found proof that he was planning to murder two journalists.

Swedish police found documents on the Nazi party member’s computer with information about two journalists working for Mittmedia, one of Sweden’s largest media groups.

The files also included photos of the reporters’ homes, Swedish news agency TT reported.

Authorities also found a home-made shotgun and ammunition in the suspect’s possession, as well as silencers and a contraption designed to fire the concealed weapon from inside a bag.

Government Security Service Säpo is taking part in investigations as they have also previously impounded countless DIY weapons at the homes of several NMR members

The man denied all knowledge of the documents and claimed to have no intention of harming the journalists.

Police also found a transmission breaker at the NMR member’s home, a breach of the Electronic Communications Act.

His hearing begins on August 23 at Sundsvalls District Court in Västernorrland County.

My word was a bit aggressive, but I was trying to be pithy. I figure the minimum should be that you can prove you can get a majority of the Democrats behind you, because with too big of a fracture, we could end up with a GOP Speaker in a Democratic House.

Speaking of the Greens and their havoc, hecatedemeter.wordpress.com runs over the history of their misdeeds in a clear way.

Wikipedia says that the Green Party supports:

specifically environmentalism, nonviolence, social justice, participatory, grassroots democracy, gender equality, LGBT rights, anti-war and anti-racism. On the political spectrum, the party is generally seen as left-wing.

Trump and today’s Republican Party are specifically opposed to all of those objectives. Trump is repealing environmental protections, recently re-allowing the use of the poison asbestos in buildings. He advocates violence at his rallies and does all that he can to undermine social justice. The Republican Party makes voting difficult, hindering grassroots democracy, and actively opposes gender equality and LGBT rights. It promotes war and Trump is objectively pro-racism. So why would anyone who supports the goals of the Green Party cast a vote designed to keep Trump and his party in power?
