I’ve been looking at the sad and discouraging Keith Ellison story.
U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison accused of domestic violence; he denies it
One interesting item: Ellison’s accusers, former girlfriend Karen Monahan and her son, are adamant that a video exists of the incident. If they can’t produce it, Ellison is cleared, though obviously Republicans and other Islamophobes will accept his guilt as holy writ.

This entire admin is complicit and compromised. The only question is what crimes did each person actually commit.

That’s it.

Everyone engaged in wrongdoing, failed to follow protocols, rules, ethics guidelines, or federal law. Everyone.

Not a single person was immune.

And Trump caught on tape talking about how he was supposedly blindsided by Omarosa’s firing? Yeah, there’s more backstabbing than a sewing circle in Trumpworld because this isn’t a professional outfit. They’re a bunch of cretinous maladjusted white nationalists who are pushing their reactionary/regressive know nothing policies on a country that opposes them (a majority voted against them and the GOP after all).

There are more tapes? Absolutely. I believe that.

I absolutely believe it.

I absolutely believe Omarosa should be investigated for taping in the SCIF. But I also believe she was hardly the only one who did that - and others should be investigated and lose their clearances (and jobs) as well. After all, this is the same admin that gave clearances to Kushner and Ivanka despite all the red flags suggesting both were security risks. Everyone in this admin is a security risk. Everyone.

The thing that is more odd to me than Omarosa recording this in the SCIF is why she was fired in the SCIF to start with. Kelly has an office…a rather nice one from what I understand. Why was this done as it was?

Not that I am in any way sticking up for the equally cretinous Omarosa, but it’s like Kelly is supposedly running the WH behind the actual (god help us all) president and didn’t want to fire her where trump might hear her going off…resulting in trump then telling Kelly to piss off because he fired her.

Amateur hour to be sure. This is no way to run a freaking country.

I guess we could spend a few minutes listening to her tapes for background noise (which is the only potential source of a security breach), but also we could remember that we’ve all seen pictures of the room. So recording, in itself, is not a breach, depending on where it happens. A SCIF isn’t a magic no electronics zone with guard dogs and cavity searches, and the situation room, according to wiki, seems to have specific rooms to make cell phone calls from. Also, I would guarantee Trump has tweeted from that room, and *the Boss sets the rules*.

She was fired in the scif the same reason people break up in restaurants. To control the reaction and the spectacle. l remember her trying to hoof it over to the residential wing after, so it didn’t really work, but if Trump was surprised about it, that sequence makes a lot of sense.

I don’t buy that Trump didn’t know Omarosa was fired.

We already know he can’t fire anyone. So Kelly did it.

He said that to her just to weasel out of it. She is a ‘friend’ to Trump and he couldn’t just let her go, he had to act like he was not told and hurt about it. Yeah sure.

“They” are running a big operation he is quoted as saying.

Who they hell is “they?” I thought Trump was running the big operation.

Omarosa needs a lawyer—she made a recording of the White House Chief of Staff in a classified area called a SCIF.

But someone needs to ask John Kelly: Why did you feel the need to have Omarosa’s exit conversation in a SCIF? Is it because said something you didn’t want recorded?

there’s another aspect to this i dont think ive seen addressed yet

kelly makes the decision to have the conference in the sit room - whatever the reason:

Dr. Matt  Aug 13, 2018 • 7:20:36am

This is not a hoax, and things are not okay

Imagine that U.S. military leaders spent most of 1941 warning President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Democratic Party of a coming Pearl Harbor attack. Then imagine history’s harsh judgment against FDR’s party had it ignored those concerns, voted against efforts to fortify the Pacific fleet and plotted the firing of generals who were working to expose the looming Japanese threat. Historians would have rightly savaged these politicians as traitors to their country.

Seventy-seven years later, President Trump and his Republican Party are showing a disturbing ambivalence toward Russia’s attacks on U.S. democracy. What exactly are we to make of their disturbing behavior? Even after Trump’s intelligence chiefs handed Republicans incontrovertible evidence of Russian malevolence, Trump dismissed the warnings as a hoax, the GOP House Intelligence Committee chairman secretly plotted against those leading the Russia investigation and Senate Republicans voted in lock step against a Democratic bill providing a stronger defense against future Russian attacks.

“The X-Files” this is not. The truth about Russia is out there, and it is staring every Republican right in the face.

In this case, the topics being talked about - Russia and deplorables - are themselves mutually exclusive. The reason that these are problems that we’re not dealing with, on the other hand, has a single source, a single party.

No, oh no, my friends. The enemy is fear. The enemy is ignorance. The enemy is the one who tells you that you must hate that which is different. Because, in the end, that hate will turn on you. Of course, there IS an obvious answer: and if it is correct, would easily explain Trump, his Admins’ and the GOP’s reluctance to seriously look into (much less attempt to DO anything about) Russian cyber-interference in US elections.

Which is that they simply don’t care, as long as they think it can electorally benefit them.

In short: “Party over Country” and rely on a compliant RW media (and a generally spineless “MSM”) to cover for them.

Trump’s director of national intelligence said warning lights were “blinking red” and compared the threat level from Russia to what we faced leading up to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The president’s secretary of homeland security declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plot against America placed “democracy itself . . . in the cross hairs.”

The president’s FBI director, in that same news conference, warned Americans that “the threat is not going away.”

i’ve been reading a bunch of noir books by David Goodis
Dark Passage, probably his most famous was sort of appropriated into “The Fugitive”.

im in the middle of Street of No Return
It was published in 1954

Puerto Ricans were given citizenship in 1917.

I don’t know his motivation for writing how and what he did. This section just struck me, because, well, what’s happening now.
Puerto Ricans vs. “americans”. and note how the americans were described - not really ‘americans’ at all.

He counted eleven policemen and around twenty Puerto Ricans and the rest were Americans who looked to be of Slavic and Irish and Scandinavian descent. The policemen were moving in between the Puerto Ricans and the Americans,

and then this

he sat there with his head turning very slowly, looking at the Puerto Ricans on one side of the room, the Americans on the other side, and back to the Puerto Ricans, then back to the Americans.

i didnt notice anything like this in eight other books of his. so i dont know if it was intentional, ironic or what.

eta: the book was contemporary - so taking place in the 50’s, as far as i could tell

Aitan Goelman, Strzok’s lawyer, said FBI Deputy Director David L. Bowdich ordered the firing on Friday — even though the director of the FBI office that normally handles employee discipline had decided Strzok should face only a demotion and 60-day suspension. Goelman said the move undercuts the FBI’s repeated assurances that Strzok would be afforded the normal disciplinary process.

“This isn’t the normal process in any way more than name,” Goelman said.

The FBI declined to comment.

This may be a stupid question, but what if trump does talk to Mueller and Mueller thinks trump is mentally impaired?

Mueller’s opinion as to Trump’s mental state, whatever it might be or however accurate, is unfortunately (AFAIK) legally irrelevant.
What IS relevant, though, is what VP Pence and a majority of the Cabinet think: per the 25th Amendment:

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

And this, of course would lead to that wonderful situation of opening a can of worms while sailing uncharted waters (full of rocks): to my untutored eye, that phase “other body” is frighteningly vague: Trump could set up a “Presidential Fitness Assessment Board” consisting of Jared, Ivanka, Stephen Miller and Rudy Giuliani, and as long as Congress signs off on it, they would have the last word as to how “fit” the POTUS is for office…..

re: #164 retired cynic

I’m using veggie pasta and spaghetti squash to try to quell the carb hunger. Doesn’t really work, TBH! Love bread, pasta, rice (really miss rice!). Do you have a book that you follow, or just no carbs? What about fats?

Too old and crippled to exercise my way out of this, which is what I did in my younger years. Used to eat what I want, but working on the farm kept things under control.

Stop cold turkey. If you stop carbs you stop craving carbs (honest). If I had to minimize my intake of bread, or what have you, it is much more difficult to eat less than none at all. I think of myself as a carbaholic and a drunk doesn’t do well cutting back on drinks, like a drug addict doesn’t do well by doing less drugs. For me, it’s all or nothing. Plus, really, eating carbs makes your body crave more carbs. So stopping cold turkey actually helps the process of cutting them out physically and mentally.

When people ask me what I eat, I tell them what I don’t eat…

Potatoes - no kind at all
Pasta - there are some low carb kind that I haven’t tried yet
Rice - insane amount of carbs and virtually no nutrition
Bread - had some fake bread, didn’t love it
Flour - I use coconut flour and ground flaxseed when making stuff; ground up pork rinds in meatloaf
Sugar - I use Spenda daily in coffee and when I make things like cheese cake

I don’t eat the above - ever. Some sugar gets in with prepared foods, but I read labels religiously and won’t buy anything that has more than 5 carbs in it…like tomatoes…read the labels, some have 2 carbs, some 6…which makes no sense from a functional standpoint and is just empty calories and carbs.

I strive for 30 or less carbs a day. Low carb can go up to 100 grams, but I would only look at that many if I was much more active than I am.

Fats are fine. I eat butter liberally and when I first started made Fat Bombs (to increase the fat intake) with coconut oil - those were delicious deserts like chocolate coconut fat bombs (cream cheese, coconut oil, splenda, coconut flakes and cocoa). Keto is all about fat because what your body does is start to use fat instead of carbs for energy. Keto is hard and I now do low carb, but if you can manage keto to kick start, I highly recommend it. Even now I do not watch fat and am starting to move more towards keto than low carb. But like I said, keto is harder.

For me this is not a diet but how I plan on eating for life (like I said, lamb and lobster can keep me going for life). I may have some French bread in Paris or a macaroon but that will be maybe once in the three weeks we will be there.

I used Facebook when I first started and joined a bunch of low carb/keto groups. What helped me most was seeing people’s pictures on #TransformationTuesday and other hashies people use to show their progress. After about 4 months, I didn’t need the external help (plus I despise Facebook) because I lost about 40 pounds in the first couple of months and the fact that I feel I am facing the possibility of having to ride around in one of those senior scooters for life and I would rather fucking die. This is not an option for me and I have no interest in that. So I am fighting back hard. That said, if you are in a learning phase, people on Facebook can and willingly give advice and help.

I’m a couple of months into the Keto life as well, but I had real issues with almond flour and pork rinds for breading/breadcrumbs. Also, I do spend 5 of my grams of sugar on sugar for my coffee. I found some keto creamer that tasted okay, but it refused to actually dissolve in my coffee.

I definitely second the advice to use keto to kickstart and then gradually go up to 30g. I did one of those keto cleanses over a weekend (bone broth, electrolytes, coffee), and dropped a quick 5 that didn’t come back. At 30g you can do stuff like eat an open-faced hamburger in a pinch and not break your diet (say, on 6-9 hour drives).

The biggest problem for my wife, btw, is the lack of availability of fruit on keto. Some berries are fine, most fruit is out though because the net carbs are still too high. For other people…probably beer/wine is a factor.

My teeth hurt badly last week so I used up a few carbs for several days to take some Vitamin C gummies. No more teeth hurt.

Taking a vitamin helps with getting the things needed. I have no issue not eating fruit. Hubby will sometimes have some cherries or berries. As long as his diabetes is in check, he can eat whatever he wants (he was turning into a real asshole when his blood sugar went out of whack. Like divorce level assholeness.) I won’t have anything like that until I reach 140 pounds. And I may then have some heavy nut/seed bread at some point in the future.

I figure as long as I make conscious decisions I am good. Hubs is 62 and I am 59 and at this point in life, for us to continue to enjoy life, we have to make some changes. Weight loss, lowered blood pressure and cholesterol are all the things we are wanting to watch. Right now, this way of eating is working all the way around.

The thought we’d be told “you can now eat lettuce for life” along with a long, long list of things you can’t have…this is a better path. The big plus is that our doctor (whom I really like but creeps me out sometimes as he is my husbands lifelong friend - small town living at its finest) is on board with the way we are eating and is very happy with the progress.

Or did he just not care?
So, IOW, Omarosa can go on shooting her mouth off about her time in the WH (though presumably not revealing classified info: even assuming she was let in on any, which - given the utter clownshow that is the Trump Admin - is always a possibility), Trump can try to shut her up via (?) attempting to enforce an NDA; which will likely get shot down by the first court it’s filed in - thus encouraging more embarrassing PR for the Orange Anus.

His caucus never steps out of line; he’s damned good at whipping a vote, probably the best in Washington, I’ll give him that,”

One of my friends disagreed: “Oh, not the best. You know who’s the best at that? Nancy Pelosi. That woman is unstoppable when she wants to be.” The other one nodded in agreement.

She’s not just a woman, she’s a woman that rank and file Republicans fully admit is a better politician than their Senate Majority Leader. They hate her because she’s an effect Democratic leader, and they can’t have that if they want to stop our agenda.

The Washington Post has an article about that biker photo. No credit to me for being the one who pointed it out, of course.

One thing I found remarkable about the tapes played on the morning news today was just how weak Trump is as a person that he can’t even find the courage to be honest AFTER THE FACT about firing his “special assistant.”

Every single one of the terminations/resignations of his staff since taking office has come through intermediaries, whether it be his hired goons delivering letters, Kelly making phone calls, or through tweets. He’s the kinda boss who doesn’t drag you into his office to read you the Riot Act before shit-canning you, he’s the kind who has your supervisor call you at home and inform you that “your services are no longer required.”

“His” and “Hers” toiletry kits with identical contents and “Hers” is about $2.50 more. But it is in a pink case, so there’s that.

“It’s not on me to show embarrassing and traumatizing video that impacts both families,” Monahan told CNN on Monday.

Uh, yes, it is. Even if we avoid the messiness of potential litigation for slander, jumping out in public to make an accusation like this without the receipts to back it up totally shreds your credibility. If you’ve got the video, your ass needs to find it. Otherwise you come off looking like a bitter ex who’s trying to get back at the man who left her.

Trump says that local congresswoman Elise Stefanik kept calling him but he didn’t want to take her calls, and then she invited him to come speak at this base but he said he was too busy, but she persisted, so he eventually said he’d come

Second time today trump siad he bows to pressure If women whine enough

What a mega security risk

This may be a stupid question, but what if trump does talk to Mueller and Mueller thinks trump is mentally impaired?

Well Mueller isn’t an MD, so he can’t make a diagnosis.

Yeah, but if he was “Doctor Bob” with a daytime show on FOX* his estimations would carry a lot more weight….

*no more qualifications required than he already has
