Just was checking Omarosa info and found that she was born in Youngstown, Ohio.

Now I know where she gets her edge. Tough town…tough people.

Just more skeletons in America’s closet:

A Texas city discovered a mass grave of prison laborers. What should it do with the bodies?

It’s an interesting question since the relatives/community members may have radically different opinions on the matter. Personally, I wouldn’t have any objections to having my grandparents dug up and relocated or whatever and a memorial wouldn’t have particular meaning for me. Other people would be legitimately and deeply angered by that.

Post-slavery slaves, though. Bad optics for Sugarland. It got it’s name for a reason. Sugar plantations were labor intensive, bigly. “Workers” were often worked to death. And heat index? Brutal conditions.

The black president uses the word in a discussion of racial issues in America and he gets slammed with long editorials and overheated rhetoric from pundits about he’s “degrading the sanctity of the office.”

The white president* may have been caught on tape saying the word and the public’s response is “Meh.”

But racism is “dead,” so sayeth Chief Justice Roberts./////

On last night’s Penn & Teller show, one of the guest magicians made a derogatory Trump joke. Most of the crowd laughed, including Penn.

Unusual for a non-late night broadcast show to start airing anti-Trump stuff. Hopefully it will pick up.

Yes, but how much more can his approval rates go up among the deplorables? Isn’t it already pretty high? We need to keep in mind that Trump’s base is small relative to the general population. He won with 70,000 votes because of the electoral college.

It would be normalized by his supporters but everyone else would be horrified. Trust me, it wouldn’t be a good thing overall for Trump or Republicans in general. There’s a reason they are moving heaven and earth to suppress the votes of minorities and to discourage migration from non-White countries.

I think that meant the doctor could feel it crepitating as he palpated it. But could have meant my brother, never thought of that. That was 50 years ago, my brother probably doesn’t remember it. Unless it’s still crepitating…

Alas, no. It’s a kneecap that’s not built properly. It creates walking issues. My one boy will lift one leg when it’s cold and he’s running. He’ll fly up the stairs on the legs.

That is the go-to anytime an old white guy is caught being openly racist, the idea that their age means they “don’t know any better.”

“Oh, that’s the way he was raised, the culture he grew up in. It was such a common and accepted word back then that he doesn’t feel wrong saying it. You can’t expect someone who’s had decades to learn better to just drop the use of the word in regular conversation!”

The bad news is that, unless the courts rule against his “I’m running for a nomination I don’t want to keep others away” strategy, Берни is headed back to the Senate, with a slight 94-6% lead over Folasade Adeluola. The good news is that sane Democratic Congressman Peter Welch is over 80% against proto-BernieBro Dan Freilich (the only non-incumbent to raise over $5,000 for his campaign so far).

The GOoPer side is goofier. Roque de la Fuente is losing his fourth Senate campaign to Lawrence Zupan. Second is Brooke Paige, who is also running for the US House (and winning). And Attorney General (unopposed). And Secretary of State (unopposed). And Treasurer (unopposed). And Auditor (yep, unopposed).

In the Democratic race for governor, Christine Hallquist is running to be the first transgender governor in the US, or more likely the first transgender candidate to lose a rock-solid Democratic state to a Republican. The only one of her three opponents worthy of note is Ethan Sonneborn. He’s 14.

This is sick:
Nebraska carries out first US execution using opioid fentanyl

Nebraska has carried out its first execution in more than two decades with a drug combination never tried before, including the first use of the powerful opioid fentanyl, which has become the focal point in the US’s opioid crisis.

Carey Dean Moore was pronounced dead at 10:47am local time (15:47GMT) on Tuesday. The 60-year-old had been sentenced to death for killing two cab drivers in Omaha in 1979. He was the first inmate to be lethally injected in Nebraska, which last carried out an execution in 1997, using the electric chair.

Moore was 21 when he committed the murders. He was 60 at the time of his execution. He had effectively spent his entire adult life on death row. Conservative death penalty advocates continue their grotesque search for new methods, which is really about dodging the “cruel and unusual” admonition in the Constitution. Drug companies understandably want nothing to do with this, so several states, starting with Oklahoma, have decided to start asphyxiating the condemned with nitrogen gas.

Back when? I’m 65 and did not grow up hearing the word much. Occasionally, maybe, like on TV with some racist idiot using it but it wasn’t at all common. I never used the term except perhaps quoting someone, or discussing Huck Finn.

On to less depressing states, like Connecticut. Amusingly, the one-time enfant terrible of the online left, Ned Lamont, is now the Establishment candidate for Governor and is winning big in early voting. The BernieBro LtGov candidate, Eva Zimmerman, is losing soundly to former SecState Susan Bysiewicz.

Post-slavery slaves, though. Bad optics for Sugarland. It got it’s name for a reason. Sugar plantations were labor intensive, bigly. “Workers” were often worked to death. And heat index? Brutal conditions.

Born and raised here, live within walking distance of the Jester Unit, on old prison land.

Sugar Land has a history I and others are well aware of, which makes it even more ironic that we are the most diverse area of the most diverse metro area of the U.S. Things in the world can and do change.

As for these graves, I leave it to the families. There are a whole lot of little cemeteries around here near new neighborhoods, fenced off and maintained. If that’s what the families want they should have it. Seriously, they’re everywhere around me.

The Catholic Church is compromised and complicit in the ongoing sex abuse scandals that go back decades.

How to deal with an organization like this?

You mean besides prosecuting those involved to the fullest extent of the law?

I propose the death penalty - the same as with athletic organizations who enable and ignore ongoing abuse when there are warning signs.

For college sports, it would mean the end of the Penn State athletic department. Permanently. You want zero tolerance in college environment, you make the punishment for violating the public trust and putting the public in danger.

So how would that apply to the Church?

Take away their tax exemptions in those jurisdictions where the abuse occurred. You seize the property and put it up for sale as reparations to those who were harmed.

You shut them down.

I know that’s a pipe dream, especially getting rid of the tax exemptions, but prosecuting those who were involved is a possibility in some of these cases (for the rest, some of the perpetrators are long dead).

Yes. As another former Catholic, I understand completely. Very lucky you weren’t an orphan and reared by priests.

I’m still Catholic, and I think the Church should’ve handled it better. And most were lucky to escape the monster priests and nuns, because there weren’t that many problem employees to begin with, but by shifting them around rather than pursuing justice, they potentiated the damage the problem employees did.

As to reparations? Pay the equivalent of the tax they would pay if they weren’t a non-profit entity into a central fund for the care and long-term compensation for victims for a set number of decades would get my nod of approval easy.

I hope you’re all preparing yourselves for the very real possibility that Cruz, Nunes et. al could get reelected come November.

Victory is never guaranteed.

Of course. But Texas is a big state, so the GOP is going to have to spend a lot of money to keep Cruz’s seat, money they won’t be able to spend elsewhere.

Ok, looked through some threads on Amy Siskind. This is going to be one hell of a book tour from here on out. I think she had better explain or wrap it up.

I first learned of her work through Sarah Kendzior, so yes, I’m most definitely stunned by these developments. And I can’t for the life of me understand why she won’t provide some sort of explanation - it’s not like there aren’t already a few never-trump GOPers, and ex-GOPers saying a lot of the same things as her (Jennifer Rubin, Nicole Wallace…hell, look at our own Charles and his “why I left the right” post from 2009! So why couldn’t Amy Siskind say something similar? I don’t get it -_- )

More good news, bad news from Wisconsin and Minnesooooooota:

Tim Pawlenty tried to climb back onto the political stage and is losing 54-43% to Jeff Johnson (no, not from Wisconsin).

On the bad side, Randy Bryce and his iron ‘stache lead 57-43% over Cathy Myers, surviving a Sanders endorsement with the help of a mere $6,400,000 in primary funding.

Keep in mind that this Palin stuff is from 2012 long after she had opened her mouth and done a lot of other dumb things on the national scene for four years after she was nominated. Amy’s defense seems to be that she was doing it on behalf of her non-partisan organization dedicated to advancing women into leadership roles (thenewagenda.net). I suppose Palin was one of the only prominent women in the GOP in 2012 (she was better than MIchelle Bachman I guess?). I am not a fan of her Palin advocacy, but I still think her errors in judgment were forgivable if she had approached this better. She got overly defensive and dismissive in a way that turned this into a war instead of just acknowledging and reflecting on her earlier views and explaining why they do not represent who she is now.

That day, when Charles posted that article, was extremely polarizing across the right-wing blogosphere; anybody who was anybody was taking sides (most of them aiming their guns at our illustrious host, sadly). I knew I had to make a choice: Either keep reading right-wing shock jockeys and letting my brain rot into mush, or take a reasoned stance, stay informed, and risk becoming one of those liberals I had been trained since birth to despise. I think it’s pretty obvious how that turned out.

I think we all lose without a real press presence. Then we get nothing but propaganda from right wing liars (like Sarah but exclusively so).

It’s only marginally better but I’m opposed to the press not being there.

Well Wisconsin is looking good overall. Evers has had two terms as State Superintendent of Public Instruction so he has a statewide team and name recognition - he was elected to that office twice against strong Republican candidates. Yes, others were more progressive but he’s far more electable and is Walker’s nightmare.

Up here in the 7th, the candidate I’ve been volunteering for, Margaret Engbretson is leading. I hope she carries it because the other guy (a DR) is too cozy with the insurance industry for my tastes and I want one more “medicare for all” vote in the House ;)

So does this make the Manafort trial a mistrial?

[Embedded content]

It’s extremely unusual for the prosecution to call for a mistrial(if it ever happens) - if it had been against the defense - different story.

From your link

Ellis had proposed giving jurors a specific instruction about his comments, effectively saying they were expressions of opinion and could be disregarded entirely

The prosecution disagreed with this with good cause. If a juror is told this is the judge “expressing an opinion” - surely they would consider the judge’s opinion to be important. It will interesting to hear the final format of the instruction.

Doing some internet archeology tonight.
I’ve managed to regain access to a Yahoo account I had not visited since 2012. In the process, I was also able to bring up a lost ATT email account, for which the yahoo address was the only backup. My yahoo mail is gone, deleted, but the groups to which I belonged are still there. Most of these date from the turn of the century, starting in 1999. Some of these have not had a new posting since 2005, the most recent in any of them is from ‘15.
My mail on the ATT account is still there, buried under 6 years worth of spam. It’s not exactly a nostalgia trip, but some of the old info is useful to have again and I can also recycle some of my wittier posts (if I could tell which ones they are). There is also some real sadness, since there are extensive exchanges with a couple of friends who are now deceased. It is re-assuring to have this though, and to be able to see their words again.

Belafon  Aug 14, 2018 • 8:01:27pm

I saw this graph earlier and had a thought:

As you can see, it’s the graph of real wages vs productivity. We all like to blame Reagan for this split, and I see no reason not to blame for not trying to fix it, but something has been bothering me about it: The split occurs around 1973, when wages start to go flat, well before Reagan.

Now, a little of that is due to those values not having to coincide, but I, someone who likes math but is not an economist, was wondering: Is this change mainly due to the way we have responded to inflation? We know that companies were raising employee salaries because of both unions and that business taxes raised the incentive to pay higher wages. But, due to our manufacturing capability back then, especially compared to now, we couldn’t make stuff fast enough, thus prices rose meaning higher inflation.

But, then our responses were messed not all that great. First we had Nixon’s price fixing, then we had the high interest rates of Carter (I have lost the name of his Fed Chairman). And then, from Reagan on, we’ve reduced the incentive for companies to raise wages.

I think there are two things now that we can do that we couldn’t do back then. 1) Push inflation up higher, (ideas on that front: the government should borrow enough to pay down college loans so that new grads can spend), and 2) seriously raise minimum wage. Automated manufacturing means we can generate quite a bit more for people to buy, meaning we won’t have the inflation problems of before.

Now, as I said, I’m not an economist, and this could probably be longer, but I was just wondering.

Edited.

Mullah Mohler is lamenting that he’ll never be Pope of America:

In an increasingly secular age, the only churches that will survive are those that are distinctively Christian

[…]

What we are seeing beyond the scope of this article is the breakdown of cultural or nominal Christianity. Cultural Christianity means that there was the dominant cultural expectation that people would identify as Christian. They would attend Christian churches, they would show up at church, they would make sure their children are at church and whether or not they actually attended church regularly or not, they would want you to think that they did. That’s what’s breaking down, that cultural expectation or nominal or minimal Christianity.

[…]

The most important reality concerning this article is the fact that the article appeared. And not only that, appeared in The State, the newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina. The big lesson there is that if it can happen in South Carolina, it can happen anywhere. And more fundamentally, this means that the process of secularization in the modern age is now reaching everywhere. Everywhere, including South Carolina, and most assuredly including wherever you are hearing The Briefing.

Ah yes, the state of SC, the state which made the “Southern” in “Southern Baptist Convention” a thing in national politics way back in 1861.

Mohler is referring to this article: Losing Faith: Why South Carolina is abandoning its churches

I haven’t studied the 84 election too much (as much as I’ve read on Reagan, 84 tends to get reduced to the “I will not use my opponent’s youth and inexperience against him” moment). But based on some brief research it looks like Ferraro was viewed the same as Palin - something of a gimmick pick, didn’t have a lot of experience (three terms in the House), and then ran into issues with not fully disclosing finances (she and her husband filed taxes separately and they didn’t release his tax returns).

Mullah Mohler is lamenting that he’ll never be Pope of America:

In an increasingly secular age, the only churches that will survive are those that are distinctively Christian

Ah yes, the state of SC, the state which made the “Southern” in “Southern Baptist Convention” a thing in national politics way back in 1861.

Mohler is referring to this article: Losing Faith: Why South Carolina is abandoning its churches

Mullah Mohler can get f*d. As long as he continues to give aid and comfort to C.J. Mahaney, who covered up child sexual abuse in the Sovereign Grace Churches, well, Mohler can, again, get f*d. Seriously, he has no fucking right to say a gd thing about morality, not when he and his fellow Southern Baptists had no problem with Paige Patterson. *scowl*

Oh yeah, and as far as South Carolina Southern Baptists are concerned…holy crap, Mohler is REALLY one to talk. Former missionary Mark Aderholt was arrested last month for sexually assaulting a teen in Texas back in 1997. I’m sure Al knows about this too.

star-telegram.com

Aderholt was working in missions for the South Carolina Baptist Convention and also work with youth at a Southern Baptist Church. Aderholt had also been a missionary with the SBC’s International Mission Board, but even though his victim went to them in 2007, there’s a report, but no evidence that Aderholt was turned in.

My good friend Dee Parsons wrote about this extensively on her blog:

Of course Mullah Mohler doesn’t mention this. *scowl*

Everyone sees color. The idea that one doesn’t is a ridiculous and dangerous conceit.

“I don’t see color” can only be a valid statement in the sense of “I do not base my decisions about individuals or groups based on color”.

And even that is a rather dangerous conceit for most of us.

Armiger Pattern Knights

Armiger Pattern Knights, also called Armiger-class Knights, are the lightest class of Imperial Knight in use by the Imperium of Man and the Adeptus Mechanicus, usually piloted by Nobles who are of lesser lineage than other Knight pilots. Armiger Knights are long-legged combat walkers designed to strike hard and fast at critical targets. Nimbler than the primary Imperial Knight patterns, these engines of war carry heavy weaponry powerful enough to break a battle line.

The lighter Armiger-class Knights, akin to squires or a hunter’s beaters, are piloted by minor Nobles or elevated household guards. Instead of sitting the full Throne Mechanicum, Armiger pilots don the Helm Mechanicus, a device that allows them to control their Knight but also neurally bonds them to a higher-ranking Noble.

For all their lesser status, however, every Bondsman is a valued member of their household, and every Armiger is still a towering engine of destruction. Armigers typically fight in packs of two or more, and are employed to scout ahead, perform swift flank attacks, and drive the enemy from cover and into the guns of the larger Knights on the orders of their bond-liege.

Yes, because it presumes that all decisions are consciously made. That’s simply not how the human mind works. It is always more responsible to confront color head on and examine how it might be (meaning: is almost certainly) impacting the initial conditions of your cognition.

Especially in this society if you’re lucky enough to be white and therefor occupy a position of intrinsic and historical privilege.

Exactly, it served both their purposes. Trump clearly didn’t want other black people around him and Omorosa obviously wanted to jealously guard her unique position within the White House. Trump literally said he tolerated her presence and instructed Kelly to work it out with her “because she only said GREAT things about me.” I mean he just flat out said the only thing he truly values in White House staff is abject obsequiousness and their ability to feed his insatiable narcissism. I get that we obviously all know this by now but it’s still noticeably fucked up how most of the press is just collectively ignoring that overt admission.

re: #63 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

This is sick:
Nebraska carries out first US execution using opioid fentanyl

Moore was 21 when he committed the murders. He was 60 at the time of his execution. He had effectively spent his entire adult life on death row. Conservative death penalty advocates continue their grotesque search for new methods, which is really about dodging the “cruel and unusual” admonition in the Constitution. Drug companies understandably want nothing to do with this, so several states, starting with Oklahoma, have decided to start asphyxiating the condemned with nitrogen gas.

They did not just use Fentanyl, they also used Valium (used for calming nerves, insomnia, and epilepsy).

There is more to this story about yesterday’s human experimentation here.

Then Governor Dave Heineman (R) tried to get drugs for execution of the very few convicts on Nebraska’s death row. He could not, and got entangled in an alleged international crime of importing “drug samples” from India to be used for executions. (UPS in India tipped off the Drug Enforcement Agency to the shipment, and lots of our tax money was flushed down the toilet because it would seem there is no law a conservative will break.)

Before the 2014 election, Sen. Ernie Chambers (I-Omaha) introduced a bill (which he’s done many times in the past) to abolish the death penalty, partly because of that fiasco. Unlike previous versions of the bill, he was able to convince a majority of Republicans in the Unicameral to not only vote for his bill, but override Gov. Heineman’s veto. The death penalty stood abolished in Nebraska.

Fast forward to 2016. Pete Ricketts, running for governor as a Republican, financed out of his own pocket a referendum to put to the voters to reinstate the death penalty. The GOP and dark money financiers went all out blanketing the state in fear mongering adverts on all these evil criminals will break out of prison and kill everyone from Omaha to Scottsbluff. Dammit, he’s rich, he’s conservative, and no one is going to take his right to sign death warrants away from him.

Hence the referendum … “out of touch politicians in Lincoln don’t really represent you” was also a feature of the adverts.

The advertising campaign was successful, as the voters passed the referendum and reinstated the death penalty. However, no drug company would sell the state the drugs for its “humane” executions.

Like any conservative position, it cannot stand on its own merits, however. Thus like other death penalty states where they are getting pushback from both anti-death penalty opponents and drug companies, the state passed a law to prohibit knowing where your tax money is going to obtain the drugs. (This has the added benefit of hiding such things as Dave Heineman’s using tax money to buy drugs in India.)

A suit is going forward to have the law declared unconstitutional … while the man in question has been executed, the point still remains that the state is secretly spending tax money, thus the case still proceeds. In the meantime, human experimentation can now proceed under “compassionate conservatism,” and probably people with epilepsy in this state who use Valium as their anticonvulsant are suddenly going to have trouble getting their medication. (I fully expect the state to try Phenobarbital next, putting my own medication at risk, as it was when Virginia and Oklahoma executed prisoners with it. After all, what’s a few thousand people with a pre-existing condition when we have executions to do?)

I agree. My wife switched her position on the death penalty (she formerly supported it) over the increasing number of people who have been exonerated from convictions with new evidence, and the drug fiasco under our former governor sealed the deal for her.

She stumped around town against Pete Ricketts’s referendum. (I don’t know how effective it was, but one of her points was Ricketts was trying to buy the right to kill people.)

When Felix Randomkitty died, the veterinarian used a vet version of Seconal (I asked her). Seconal is a short-term, fast-acting barbiturate with many uses including insomnia, anaesthesia, and epilepsy.

I think the reason that Oklahoma and Virginia went with Phenobarbital (a long-lasting barbiturate) is because it is much less commonly used today, so it would be “less controversial” if only a few thousand people with epilepsy nationwide were affected. Seconal is a much more effective drug for the purpose of state-sanctioned murders, but affects a bunch more people if the drug company pulls it from the market in death penalty states.

The best cinematic depiction of the death penalty was, for me, in Clint Eastwood’s film Changeling. The 1930 hanging of Gordon Northcott for the Wineville chicken coop murders.

It is unflinching and genuinely disturbing to watch. It’s almost perfect cinematic realism and I’m quite sure inspired by the film In Cold Blood. It can be found on YouTube; I won’t post it here.

The author is correct, though perhaps Zuckerberg didn’t mean it to be used that way. Typical of a lot of tech gurus, the excuse is simply “we just invent stuff, it’s up to other people to work out the ethics of it, we can’t be bothered.”

Zuck, Dorsey, and others have convinced people they “must” have their services, without doing a damn thing to police them. (I’m reminded of my sister-in-law’s death last year; my sister sent out an announcement on Facebook for the funeral then was confused when none of our family showed up … she is the only one in our family on Facebook and had forgotten her only contacts there are her coworkers, friends, and “friends” she’s never met in her life. She could have done the same thing with an E-mail or GASP a telephone call.)

Dorsey said as much the other day, claiming it’s journalists’ jobs to debunk bad information on his platform, not Dorsey’s job to prevent bad actors from using it in the first place. (If it’s free, you’re the product.)

It was entirely predictable that targeted advertising could be used on Facebook for redlining minorities, &c. Such platforms provide a tech version of Jim Crow.

I can withhold sympathy for the convict while still opposing the method of vengeance.

It fails as a deterrent (most of the death penalty states also fall in the category of highest murder rates). Moreover, once you’ve killed a single person which might warrant the death penalty, they can’t punish you more for killing more. (Aside from the issue that even in the most heinous crimes, they might convict the wrong person, and heinousness of crimes is used to dehumanise the convict, making it harder for an innocent person to gain sympathy to their case.)

That is the reason the death penalty was abolished for rape: If you commit a rape in a state that carried the death penalty for it, then there was no need to leave a witness alive.

That’s a point well-taken. In any event, the death penalty for rape is certainly over-the-top, at least in my opinion.

For mass murders, serial killings, and the like - and provided there is 100% slam-dunk evidence that the accused did in fact commit the crime - then it’s something I’m willing to tolerate, even though I regard it as primitive. Granted, it’s nothing that can’t be solved with a simple sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, which is an entirely acceptable outcome for me as well. Or, as in the case of someone like Ed Gein, lifetime confinement to a mental hospital.

There’s one serial killer who was sentenced to death (though he ultimately took his own life) in which I personally found the death penalty to be entirely an inappropriate sentence; the case of Richard Trenton Chase, the Vampire of Sacramento. If you read up on the case, it’s obvious, to me at least, that he was profoundly mentally ill. Even though it was determined that he was not legally insane (hence the death sentence), if I’d been the prosecutor in that case, I would’ve sought lifetime confinement in a mental institution.

On the other hand, there’s the Tool-Box Killers (Lawrence Bittaker and his accomplice, Roy Norris) whose crimes were so abhorrent that I’d be fine with either life imprisonment or death. In that case, the audio recording of their 1979 kidnapping, torture and murder of Shirley Ledford is used by the FBI Academy to both train and desensitize FBI agents to the raw reality of torture and murder. By all accounts, it’s horrifying beyond words - indeed, Detective Paul Bynum, the chief investigator, committed suicide in December 1987; he was 39 years old. In his suicide note, Bynum specifically referred to the murders committed by Bittaker and Norris as haunting him, and of his fear they may somehow one day be released from prison. Stephen Kay, the prosecutor at Bittaker’s trial, still considers the murders committed by Bittaker and Norris as being the worst criminal case he has ever prosecuted or even encountered, and insists that Bittaker deserves to be executed more than any other inmate on California’s Death Row. In interviews, he’s stated that for two years following Bittaker’s trial, his sleep was disturbed by recurring nightmares in which he would be rushing to Bittaker’s van to prevent harm from coming to the victims, but would “always get there too late.”

I was unfamiliar with that case, so I had to hunt it down at Wikipedia, the font of all human ken [citation needed].

In the opening paragraphs of the article on the case is this nugget:

Norris accepted a plea bargain whereby he agreed to testify against Bittaker and was sentenced to life imprisonment on May 7, 1980, with possibility of parole after serving 30 years. He is currently incarcerated at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility

Perhaps that possibility of parole is part of what drives the fellow’s nightmares of which you speak. Both men were guilty of the murders, but one of them got a different sentence (death) than the other (jail with possibility of parole).

It might be they could not have cracked the case without his testimony (one of the excuses given by conservatives to maintain the death penalty is it can be used as a tool as leverage for a confession or testimony). Jailing both men for the rest of their lives would serve the same purpose as execution (take them out of society, with the bonus of spending less money on death penalty appeals, something that would be fiscally conservative so naturally conservatives are against that).

The “save money” idea is what Sen. Ernie Chambers here ultimately used to convince his conservative colleagues to vote against the death penalty here.

Norris never should’ve been offered the possibility of parole, IMHO. Life sentence - and that’s that.

Of course, it could - and probably will - turn out to be the same case as the “possibility of parole” offered to Charles Manson……in other words, “LOL dawg, like you’re ever getting out!”

After Ray Comfort was so famously pwned (why is pwned in my browser’s dictionary) over the “creation by God” of bananas, convicted felon Kent Hovind is getting beat up over his claim of “created” broccoli. Doubling down, he then claims in a new video that celery was created. (We know where modern celery came from - though variants of the plant’s seeds have even been found in the Pyramids and in China, the modern version was cultivated in the XIX Century in Michigan.)

My good friend Dee Parsons wrote about this extensively on her blog:

thewartburgwatch.com

Of course Mullah Mohler doesn’t mention this. *scowl*

The reality is that in the end most of these “Christians” don’t act even slightly Christian. Why should anyone follow them? Don’t talk about pie in the sky, tell them how you’re going to make their lives better NOW. That’s the real way of the Christ.

That was also the end of cheap oil, leading to a decline in the value of the dollar in overseas trade. It is all interconnected…manufacturing declined, wages stagnated and prices rose.

Then we were sold under the notion that cutting taxes to a minimum would maximize economic growth

Regan, who has also worked as an anchor at Bloomberg Television, drew puzzled responses from members of the Danish government for appearing to suggest that the country was an economic failure for what she characterized as its socialist policies.

(Danish Finance Minister Kristian) Jensen retorted that Danes work “much more than Americans,” citing OECD statistics, and pointed to the country’s high ranking in most work-life-balance studies. He and Lose invited Regan to come to Denmark to experience its economic model first hand.

We can search their homes any time we want and work to obtain evidence against them so that when we can get ‘em, we can really get ‘em!” Former Deputy District Attorney Anthony Villalobos, who participated in the same presentation, also explained, “We can do all kinds of surveillance, including wire taps on phones, without having to get permission from a judge.”

But now it’s time to act on the enemy before they do a false flag. I know the Justice Department’s crippled, a bunch of followers and cowards. But there’s groups, there’s grand juries, there’s — you called for it and it’s time politically and economically and judiciously and legally and criminally to move against these people. It’s got to be done now. Get together the people you know aren’t traitors, and aren’t cowards, and aren’t hedging their frickin’ bets like all these other assholes do, and let’s go, let’s do it. Because they’re coming. Now, in your wisdom you may be playing possum and waiting for them to come in. But America needs to know that they’ve got their little pathetic commie red teams ready. And they’ve got their targets picked out: the sheriffs, the judges, the police chiefs, the patriots, the veterans, the talk show hosts, everybody. And everyone’s going to be amazed when they come and when those cowards come and it’s going to hit in the middle of the night, and they’re coming. And they’re coming. And they’re coming.

Sheriffs, judges, police chiefs, patriots, veterans….talk show hosts? Yeah, AJ, talk show hosts are just like all the others you mentioned. But aren’t sheriffs and judges and police chiefs all Deep State anyway? /

And it’s time to “criminally move against these people”?

They hide this stuff on wikipedia

Piercing the corporate veil or lifting the corporate veil is a legal decision to treat the rights or duties of a corporation as the rights or liabilities of its shareholders. Usually a corporation is treated as a separate legal person, which is solely responsible for the debts it incurs and the sole beneficiary of the credit it is owed. Common law countries usually uphold this principle of separate personhood, but in exceptional situations may “pierce” or “lift” the corporate veil

re: #401 Anymouse 🌹

I got sidetracked in the black hole which is YouTube.

The human creation of the cultivars of the wild cabbage is one of agriculture’s finest moments. From wild cabbage, we get cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale (not a great moment), collard greens (beloved of my late father), savoy, and gai lan. I’ve used that as a trivia question at work on our daily tech call (“What vegetables came from wild cabbage?”).

As for Kent Hovind, he’s stupid in so many ways. He still claims he’s innocent of the tax charges he was convicted of. And he has this “amusement” park down in Repton, AL that is a uninsured hazard and a potential attractive nuisance. Alabama has no laws covering amusement parks, nor does the rural county he’s in. (I learned about this when I read about the Schlitterbahn decapitation case.) In other words, even though Kent’s parole for the tax charges is up in a matter of weeks, he is a living, breathing potential disaster.

Then by Lincoln’s time, the Party of Lincoln™, the Republicans—who are exactly the same now as they were then, we’re told—supported high tariffs to protect American industry.

I’m momsitting for the next week. What this means is that I work and otherwise hang around the house with my mother, who can take care of a lot of things, but she’s legally blind and pretty close to deaf as a post. She can’t hear the phone ring, she can’t hear my brother’s sun conure screeching in the next room, that sort of thing.

So I’m here to work, and then after work run out and get her cigarettes, buy her ice cream bars and cookies and maybe get her to eat something that isn’t yogurt, make sure she takes her medication, and very important, get the dog outside several times a day to do her business. Because the last thing we need is a blind 78 YO woman slipping on dog pee.

For this, I get to smell like I went to a smoke-filled den and sleep in a room with the aforementioned sun conure, who hates me. But my brother is taking care of my cat when I go to Japan in October, and he did need a vacation. I can deal with it for eight days.

ETA: I also got an IP phone and Plantronics headset from work, but I hate the headset, it is so loud and when I adjust it, it also messes with my work computer’s volume level. Argh. I’d rather have people call my cell.

I missed this in DT’s talk to the army division when he signed the Defense spending bill: he actually mocked the army members in the audience!

These military people should be like our great MAGA president, who’s going broke being our Great POTUS of America, he’s sacrificing everything!!!!

No one who will contradict Trump on anything. I think that’s pretty obvious.

His wife filed for legal separation months ago. The divorce isn’t final yet, but there’s a court date coming up soon.

Trump supporter was beat up by Social Distortion singer after he protests anti-Trump rant

A punk rock concert went awry for Trump supporter Tim Hildebrand of Galt, California, when his heckling of Mike Ness, the lead singer of Social Distortion, led Ness to jump off-stage and wallop him.

Ness reportedly went on an anti-Trump rant, which didn’t sit well with Hildebrand. “I pretty much said I paid for your music, not your politics,” he told CBS-13.
Hildebrand proceeded to flick Ness off.

“I stood pretty much with my silent protest with my middle finger up for the next two songs.”

Ness motioned Hildebrand to the stage and spit in his face. They started yelling at each other, and Ness attacked him.

“Takes his guitar off, jumps off the stage and proceeds to punch me multiple times in the head.”

Thoughts and prayers.

Regulations are killing American businesses!!

This is a report from the EWG(environmental working group) They are an advocacy group and not science based in the least. They do sensationalist reports like this every damn year and the news media eat it up without question. If you read down a little you see that the EWG used their own more stringent standards to determine which ones had too much glyphosate, not the FDA or EPA standards. Large jury award not withstanding a meta-analysis of all the studies on glyphosate find no link to non-hodgkins lymphoma or cancer of any kind.

The WHO released a report saying it is probably carcinogenic but most other organisations disagree(EU commission, FDA etc.) Ginning up fear of glyphosate can only lead to farmers using less safe less effective less studied alternatives that they will have to use more of to get the same results leading to worse agricultural runnoff.

Manafort defense attorneys:

Westling said he would address the bank fraud Manafort faces, and he started by attacking the notion advanced by prosecutors that Manafort committed such fraud to maintain his lavish lifestyle. Westling displayed a bank’s credit memorandum, showing that at the end of 2016, Manafort had cash and other financial instruments totaling $8.6 million, and his adjusted net worth was $21.3 million.

“Given this evidence, how can we say he didn’t have money?” Westling asked. He asserted that while prosecutors had shown evidence of Manafort’s effort to obtain loans, they hadn’t shown that he spent the money he got from banks to support his life of luxury.

Trump’s going to kill Moog.

He’s literally going to kill the music. Why? Because companies deal with global supply chains, and if you jack up the prices with tariffs, it’ll crush businesses that can’t afford to relocate (and take the jobs with them).

In other words, Moog could avoid the tariffs by moving its business overseas and selling it back to the US. We’d lose the jobs, but they’d stay in business and profit.

This is the fucknuttery from Trump. He thinks this helps.

I don’t love everything Gandy posts, but trying to label her a “Russian plant” really makes no sense.

I didn’t know about Siskind’s past, although I have found her tweeting to be slightly on the overwrought side at times, not always truthworthy.
