It’s hard to imagine something more likely to get me off of Twitter than promoting white nationalism in my time line as an “alternative” viewpoint.

While I certainly left to the left, I am 100% sure I get the most worthwhile posts from the minority of conservatives who are not ok with the idea of giving up American sovereignty in exchange for rich people reducing their taxes and poor people losing their health care right now.

That won’t get you thrown off Twitter (see David Duke, &c). White nationalism is just fine on Twitter. So are rape and death threats.

Even being famous doesn’t give you a guarantee of harassment being dealt with, see actress Leslie Jones.

Listen, and understand. That terminator is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

So, you know, the Trump Base cannot be bargained with or reasoned with. The only thing we can do is crush them.

Two-Faced Trump Says Defense Bill He Signed Is Unconstitutional (Crooks & Liars, more at the link):

Another day of “governing” in the Trump White House, where Cheeto Mussolini praised the John McCain Defense Authorization Bill and signed it…

…then released a statement saying the bill is unconstitutional.

And guess what part Little Kremlin on the Potomac* thinks is a problem?

The recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea. The Independent (UK):

Among the provisions in the $716bn bill is a ban on spending Department of Defense money on “any activity that recognizes the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over Crimea”, a region in Ukraine annexed by Moscow in 2014 during a period of regional political upheaval.

The White House released a Bush-style signing statement indicating that, as well as taking issue FIFTY-ONE TIMES with different provisions of the bill. No, really.

And Maybe This Is Reason 5432 of Why I Hate Republicans (goes to Juanita Jean, more at the link):

So Republican Bekah Halat is running for the Alaska State Senate.

Bekah is damn mess.

Halat and her husband, Jarek Halat, were charged last week with one count of felony theft for allegedly collecting more than $10,000 in food stamps that they shouldn’t have qualified for. They also face one misdemeanor charge for misleading a public servant.

Yeah, they were both working, living in a $280,000 house and paying a $2,000 a month mortgage, but they really needed that extra $662. a month for food. So, they lied about their income.

I expect Republicans to steal. Hell, that’s almost something they list with pride on their campaign materials for the primary.

But, the Republican behavior is what I find amusing. Halat blamed her opponent for her theft. She claimed the criminal charges (which say she admitted to being dishonest and asked to repay the food stamps) were “false allegations from those trying to steal the election.”

re: #46 Ace Rothstein

Public roads are socialism. So is the military.

Everything is Socialism, and nothing is Socialism. That’s the basic dishonesty of the argument. When you want to attack their welfare state, Denmark is Socialist, so it’s bad, unless you are forced to admit that it works, in which case it becomes Not-Socialist.

A lot of this is because, as Krugman sez, the Right said, “You don’t want Socialism! Then we’d be like DENMARK!”, which works till people go to Denmark and find it’s not a hellhole at all. Plus it’s not like Capitalism is working for people today as well as it did even 40 years ago, let alone during the great postwar economy.

No wonder young people who find themselves in enough debt to pay for a house after college, but still unable to get a decent job in their field that pays enough to even rent an apartment are looking at what the Right calls “Socialism” and saying, “That doesn’t look so bad!”

Public roads are socialism. So is the military.

They want to get rid of public roads. This is the Confederate model of governance: “No taxation for internal improvements.” The only legitimate function of government is to make sure that enough able-bodied men are incarcerated to work on chain gangs—for just enough to pay for their keep—on roads, bridges, etc. These projects are funded by capitalists and paid for by tolls or “user fees”. This is where we’re headed at warp speed.

Republican nominee isn’t a Nazi, he just thinks ‘Hitler was right’ (Shareblue Media)

Republicans publicly complain a lot when their candidates are compared to Nazis. The national Republican party has bristled at Democrats “comparing Republicans to Nazis,” calling it “inappropriate and out of line.” But once again, a candidate with openly racist and anti-Semitic beliefs has become the party’s official nominee.

Steve West, who also goes by “Jack Justice,” recently won the Republican primary for a seat in Missouri’s House of Representatives.

As the host of a local radio show, West proclaimed, “Hitler was right about what was taking place in Germany. And who was behind it.”

He told the Kansas City Star, “Jews today are a remnant of the tribe of Judah that rejected Christ.”

As “Jack Justice,” West dons a wig and faux facial hair to produce YouTube videos touting various right-wing conspiracies. On his personal website, published under the “Jack Justice” alter ego, West equated “Moslems” with Nazis and the Klan, writing, “Today in this country there are multiple mosques in every city. They are the equivalent of KKK temples or Nazi party headquarters.”

The Missouri Republican Party said his comments “do not reflect the position of the Missouri Republican Party or indeed of any decent individual.”

Arguably, it does “reflect” the positions of some Republicans, because this keeps happening.

I’m wearing my cynic hat today, so bear with me.

What is Trump slipped her an offer of, say, 100 million bucks to just let the story slide out of the news. Would she have the will to resist a huge payoff?

(Like I said, my cynic hat is on - I absolutely believe that Trump would be stupid enough to try it.)

I asked my wife this afternoon what she thought would happen if Trump went Full Putin on Omarosa. Her reply was ‘The country would collapse.’ I’m inclined to agree with her.

Luckily, the US legal system slows down Trump’s march to fascism and he hasn’t been able to do a lot of the things he wanted that would help turn this country into Russia II. That’ll stave Trump off for a while, but I was serious when I said the intel community should start leaking what they’ve got on Trump and his family.

The only way to stop this guy is to burn his carefully cultivated image as a winner and a deal-maker down to the waterline and reveal him for the conniving sack of shit that he’s always been. No punches pulled. None. Embarrass him publicly. Hit him exactly where it would hurt him most.

And neither are a lot of other people, who could not vote for various reasons.

And this trial should inform him that Mueller knows everything, so if Manafort decides to lie, Mueller has him for that.

Usually, political parties can only control who their officers are, and their endorsements and spendings, but cannot declare that a person is not a so-and-so.

They’ll still spend money on the guy, watch. They MUST have a seat, and if it takes a Nazi to get it, they’ll support the Nazi.

Steve West (the Nazi radio host) ran against three other Republican candidates to win the primary for MO House District 14. He took 49.5% of the vote.

Omarosa is not anyone. She will go down swinging too. We don’t even know what all she can do and say to Trump. She’s been around him for years. She probably has a book on him.

She is crazy, spiteful, manipulative and unafraid of Trump when she can possibly see a somewhat “heroic” future ahead if she damages him.

(Like I said, my cynic hat is on - I absolutely believe that Trump would be stupid enough to try it.)

[Embedded content]

A few problems with this.

1.) Trump already has an NDA with Omorosa but unfortunately for him it is almost certainly unenforceable at least with regards to her time inside the White House. He might be able to shut her up about stuff that happened during the campaign but even that’s in doubt. So what possible assurance could another NDA possibly give him?

2.) Omorosa is wounded and operating on pure spite at this point. I doubt any amount of currency is worth more to her right now than hurting Trump and getting down in the dirt with all the messy drama. She’s in her natural environment now, just reveling in it.

3.) Ignoring Omorosa per se for a second, handing out $100 million dollar checks just isn’t sustainable and would basically chum the waters, letting everyone else inside and outside the Administration know that they can earn more by blackmailing Trump and the RNC.

The special instructions ended up being much of what the prosecution needed.

In his parting instructions to the jury Wednesday, the judge cautioned its members to ignore certain factors, including some of his own statements during the trial. Ellis told the panel that none of his comments or questions should be construed as expressions of his opinions to be considered during their deliberations.

He also told them they should ignore any “motive or lack thereof” on the part of the Justice Department in bringing the case against Manafort — a gentle rebuke to defense lawyers’ suggestion that prosecutors went hunting for a crime with which to charge Manafort.

It sure does in my opinion. I’ve heard many say if he pardons it may not be good, which is what we were talking about earlier. He has to be a witness against Trump. So they are saying it is a good chance his lawyers and others are telling him to not do it.

Not pardoning him is the other side of the double edge. Mueller wins and Manafort is left high and dry and steaming. Not a good look to say…a fucking lowlife like Roger Stone.

If he pardons Manafort he then has to immediately ferret him out of the country so that Mueller’s team can’t put him in front of the grand jury where he could no longer plead the fifth. Otherwise he can be jailed on civil contempt charges, which cannot be pardoned because they aren’t technically criminal proceedings but instead designed to compel compliance with the court’s lawful demands. He could be jailed for the length of the grand jury’s term and then re-jailed over and over again as new grand juries are impaneled.

Also, he has to pardon him in the pending DC charges too, and the pardon itself would probably be written up in Mueller’s report as yet another deliberate corrupt effort to obstruct justice.

I’ve been looking at Amy Siskind’s feed. By not apologizing and coming clean she has now opened herself up to ultra-left bots in her threads. Comments in subsequent threads are getting interrupted by what are clearly bots retweeting her “hey Steve, I was for Palin and Bachmann, and Dana!” that then get commented on by real people who are disappointed. She’s really screwed herself. And, fwiw, I’ll give her some credit for her unapologetic explanation, though it basically reads as: “I only wanted women to win and was so pissed at Obama’s victory that I’d support any woman no matter how repulsive.”

Have we heard anything about the judge’s jury instructions in this case? How much kneecapping of the prosecution did he do? This guy needs to be…what’s the word? Defrocked? And then disbarred.

Very standard jury instructions… Manafort didn’t have to take the stand and the like.

The judge was in the prosecutors “side” for the three motions today.

Closing arguments was all about documents. And manafort’s emails that he sent/received. yes gates was a shithead and he stole money from Manafort but it was unreported dirty money. They did a good close.

The closing for the defense was, IMHO, pretty lame.

I agree with you - I read some comments earlier that said the judge does it to avoid appeals if the defendant is guilty - but that is simply looking after his own reputation. I keep remembering a couple of trials in Florida where the judge was over supportive of terrible defense lawyers - and both ended in acquittals. Judges are not supposed to give evidence/opinions of evidence & this is what this guy was doing.

Agree. Wow.

Tech Companies Promised To Stop Helping Neo-Nazis Raise Money. They Haven’t. (Huffington Post, more at the link):

Payment processors including PayPal and Stripe have repeatedly promised to stop helping white nationalists and other racist groups raise money online. But a year after the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, a bevy of openly racist individuals and groups still use mainstream payment providers to process credit card payments and crowdfund their efforts, HuffPost has found.

Over the past several months, Charlottesville headliners, such as Richard Spencer, Chris Cantwell and Jason Kessler, have lost access to several mainstream financial platforms. But white nationalist websites that publish Spencer’s racist rants, including VDARE and American Renaissance, still use Stripe to process credit card payments, according to the source code on their payment pages.

Stripe also works with Fash the Nation, a neo-Nazi blog; Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government militia; League of the South, a white supremacist group; and Red Ice, a Swedish white nationalist website. Square processes payments for National Vanguard, a neo-Nazi group; Barnes Review, a Holocaust denial website; and Occidental Quarterly, a racist journal. PayPal works with the Three Percenters, a militia group whose members provided security to white nationalists in Charlottesville last year; Proud Boys, a far-right group of “Western chauvinists” that attracts fascists; and Gab, which is like Twitter but with a lot more Nazis. And Anedot, a smaller fundraising platform, processes payments for Joey Gibson, the head of the far-right Patriot Prayer group, which holds violent rallies in the Pacific Northwest.

Remains from North Korea in moderate to poor condition, could take years to identify (Goes to Stars and Stripes, more at the link):

WASHINGTON - It will take scientists months to determine how many sets of Korean War remains were in 55 boxes handed over by North Korea, officials with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Tuesday at the White House.

DPAA Director Kelly McKeague and John Byrd, director of scientific analysis for the agency, also said the remains were in “moderate to poor” condition.

“There is a scientific process to estimate that,” Byrd said about the number of remains included in the boxes. “I wish it were very fast, because I think a lot of people would like to know. The families would love to know that information, but unfortunately it’s going to take months.”

All schoolchildren in the UK should be taught about the Peterloo massacre, according to Mike Leigh, who has directed a film about the little-known Manchester atrocity sometimes referred to as Britain’s Tiananmen Square.

Leigh grew up in Salford, a short walk from St Peter’s Field, where on 16 August 1819 government forces charged into a peaceful rally by more than 60,000 people who were demanding political reform and protesting against poverty.

Cavalry troops slashed at the crowd with sabres, and an estimated 18 protesters were killed and more than 650 injured, making it the bloodiest political clash in British history.
Guardian Today: the headlines, the analysis, the debate - sent direct to you
Read more

The incident led to an acceleration in the progress of suffrage in Britain and, two years later, to the formation of the Manchester Guardian, now the Guardian. At the time of the massacre just 2% of the population had the vote.

Leigh, whose new film, Peterloo, tells the story of the slaughter, said he did not learn about it in school, and nor did most other people. “When we were making the film, a lot of us, in quite wide-ranging ages - I’m in my mid-70s and others were in their 20s - were all from the north-west, all saying: ‘I’d never heard of it.’”

He added: “From where I grew up in Great Cheetham Street you could walk to where it happened in less than half an hour. No one took us out from school and marched us about to say ‘this happened here’, which is remarkable.”

I’ve been in and out of here a lot the past few days, so I’m not sure if this has been posted. I saw a report about it on BBC World News last night.

Russia’s ‘Mystery Satellite’

When Vice President Mike Pence laid out the Trump administration’s plan to establish a Space Force as a new branch of the military last Thursday, critics said it was a wasteful and unnecessary step that added bureaucracy for something that didn’t present a threat.

But now the U.S. is voicing concerns and claiming that threat is very real — pointing in particular to a Russian satellite’s “very abnormal behavior.”

The satellite, launched in October 2017, has displayed behavior “inconsistent with anything seen before from” the kind of satellite Russia has said it is, according to Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance Yleem D.S. Poblete.

Instead, without saying it outright, Poblete implied that the object could be a weapon, but said the U.S. cannot know for sure.

“We don’t know for certain what it is, and there is no way to verify it,” Poblete said yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Conference on Disarmament. Poblete was speaking before the international body for negotiating arms control to express the U.S.’s “serious concerns” about Russia’s push to launch weapons in space, especially anti-satellite weapons that can target satellites that the U.S. relies on for business, scientific and military purposes.

Poblete cited recent comments from several top Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, about the development of weapons in space and Putin unveiling a mobile laser system in March that could shoot down satellites.

“The Russian pursuit of counterspace capabilities is consistent with these other activities and is disturbing given the recent pattern of Russian malign behavior,” she said.

Well, it was an open-and-shut case—legally. The only real evidence they had was the famous Bloody Glove™, and once it was allowed to pass unsupervised through Mark Fuhrman’s hands, it became invalid. It should never have been presented. Everything else was just idle speculation about how long it would take somebody to get from somewhere to somewhere else and back—again, worthless.

They’re relevant to the extent of describing how far the Cult of Trump now eclipses all other relationships and considerations. She herself was a staunch critic of Trump before selling her mercenary services first to his campaign and then his presidency. The fact that she has currently come to the point of conflating her husband’s criticism of Trump with “a violation of basic decency” and attempts to trash him anonymously in the press just demonstrates how deeply the bunker mentality has set in.

There are two separate cases against Manafort. The first one he’s currently on trial for relates to tax and financial crimes.

The second is being an unregistered foreign agent.

The combination of the two goes to how he was a compromised and complicit crony for Trump and allowed foreign powers to exert leverage over Trumpworld in ways we still don’t fully understand.

But many law people are saying that furthers obstruction and the biggie…Manafort could be dragged before a grand jury and must testify or be held in contempt and thrown right back in jail where Trump can’t pardon it. That could turn into a cycle of Manafort in and out of court and jail.

This trial is for not paying taxes on $15 million dollars and bank fraud for falsely modifying documents to obtain loans.

Someone asked about jury instructions. This is from WaPo:

After more than an hour of jury instructions, Judge T.S. Ellis III sent the case to the jury, telling them they would begin deliberations Thursday morning.

In the final instructions to the jury, the judge reminded the panel that their decision must be unanimous and “your sole interest is to seek the truth in the case.”The judge’s instructions included several key points:

• Ellis told the jury that they were to ignore any Department of Justice “motive or lack thereof” when making its decision.

• Ellis reminded the jury they should not construe comments or questions he made from the bench as opinions to be considered in their deliberations.

This trial is for not paying taxes on $15 million dollars and bank fraud for falsely modifying documents to obtain loans.

Someone asked about jury instructions. This is from WaPo:

I’d feel better if one of the instructions to the jury was “No, tax fraud and loan fraud are not OKIYAR.”

You may be right.

But many law people are saying that furthers obstruction and the biggie…Manafort could be dragged before a grand jury and must testify or be held in contempt and thrown right back in jail where Trump can’t pardon it. That could turn into a cycle of Manafort in and out of court and jail.

Donny is being told by his own lawyers* and advisers that may not be a good idea.

*Not Rudy. Rudy is the smoke machine fogging everything up and further obstructing for Trump.

Add it all up and it is collusion to obstruct!

It would be a weird irony if trump got booted out not for the russiagate conspiracy or obstruction but in fact obstructing the manafort case

THE VERY MODEL OF A MODERN-AGE MILLENNIAL
by MEG ELISON

I am the very model of a modern-age millennial,
I’ve got no cash, no house, no kids, and student debt perennial,
I know the rules of Tinder, and I’m not sold on monogamy
(For what it’s worth I think that stems from troubles ‘tween my mom and me)
I’m very well acquainted, too, with matters on the gender front
Myself, I am nonbinary; your labels I so do not want
Been disillusioned by my expectations with a lot o’ stuff,
The skills with which I am equipped for life are frankly not enough

My job prospects are hobbled by insistence on a living wage
Compete at entry level with some washed-up folks at twice my age
In matters of identity, employment and such petty ills
I am the very model of a modern-age millennial

Republicans Don’t Just Want to Win—They Want to Rig the Game (The Daily Beast)

Some friends and I were musing in this post-Omarosa moment about what Republicans would do if a tape in fact emerged of Donald Trump saying the n-word. They’d denounce him, of course. And I’m sure that on some level, most of them would find it genuinely offensive.

But what would they, you know, do? One assumes that Tim Scott and Mia Love, the two African American Republicans on Capitol Hill, would be awfully worked up. Among the remaining 285 white ones, a couple would give thundering floor speeches, probably the same old suspects, Flake and Corker, who are retiring. Ben Sasse would hit social media, as is his ineffectual custom. Then, if recent history is any guide, they’d do… nothing. Another controversy would erupt, the n-word story would move out of the cable-news cycle, and the Republicans would skate away.

Trump’s military parade is now estimated to cost $92 million - $80 million more than earlier estimate

nope nope nope
the $92M estimate comes from DOD

$80M more than the WH earlier lie.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney previously told Congress the price tag could be between $10 million and $30 million

here’s why they used that number:

The $12 million cost is roughly the same amount the military had planned to spend on its now-cancelled military exercises with South Korea.

Common sacrifice…hmmm.

That sounds socialists and that don’t get it in America.

Little side story weather related.

Driving back home from a business meeting this morning in a driving rainstorm in all grey conditions, and even some fog, I’m going about 37 or so on a 45 mph road with six lanes. I am in the third lane on the outside next to the road divider curb, when suddenly the guy in the car in front of me slams on his brakes. Whoaaaaa!

I manage to get stopped but I was damn close to rear-ending him. WTF!!! There is no intersection, so what’s up? The guy in front waits until the cars pass on the lanes to the right and then swings over to the middle lane to continue.

The issue/obstruction? A guy riding his bike wearing a grey poncho is peddling maybe 5 mph right down the center of the outside left lane. Grey poncho, driving rain, outside lane, 5 mph on a 45 mph street. You could hardly see him until right on top of him, which is what happened. Insanity!

I hope the guy made it home or wherever, because he almost got flattened by the guy in front of me. Lots of angry drivers passing him. As I went on, I looked back in my mirror and he was still going slow in the same lane. I think he must have had a death wish, because none of that made any sense to me.

So, cyclists…on a multi-lane street aren’t you supposed to keep to the right being a slower vehicle???

Oh yeah…no bike helmet on either. Guy looked to be about 35 or so…decent bike, etc.

So, I never watch MSNBC during the day, but after the discussions around here last night I wanted to see if in fact Omarosa was more than “Trump is a racist” one note everyone thinks she plays.

I’m not sure of her today, but it seems she is going down the “payoff to stay silent after she was fired road.”

And she says she has more.

And it appears it is more than just “he’s a racist.”

Let’s see where the chips fall on this.

re: #460 goddamnedfrank

There’s a perfect term for this sort of crap, as well - “Inspiration Porn.” It applies to all classes of people marginalized, looked down upon, and failed by society at large:

For a lot of us, our traumas become detached from us. They become detached from the broader picture of rape culture, too. Instead, they’re used to evoke emotions in others.

We often call this “inspiration porn”: rape stories that are appropriated to inspire the audience. “Inspiration porn” isn’t just created from stories about rape; it also characterizes discussions of poverty and disability. Inspiration porn isn’t intended to help the subject heal or to promote social change, but rather to inspire individuals who’ve never faced that particular hardship.

This is why the media also represents rape stories that tell us about the “triumph of the human spirit,” rather than rape stories that force us to confront our complicity in rape culture.

And that’s exactly what the corporate MSM is doing with respect to stories of financial struggle - blathering and gaslighting about the generosity of average citizens instead of illuminating the greasy, obscene and utterly repulsive selfishness of the 1% and their pet politicians that force people into these situations to begin with.

Why?
