This video is set in three different continents- North America, Europe, and Asia- and was filmed in three nations encountering very turbulent political changes. The idea is not to represent the struggles of these countries specifically, but to show the ability of the individual to create change in society. In this case, a deposed dictator sits as a citizen tells him the story of his own fall from power. Through a friend of mine who is a choreographer at the Alvin Ailey dance company in New York and the four dancers from Kardeş Türküler in Istanbul, we tried to convey this message through dance.

Special thanks to Buse Yildirim, Pelin Opcin, and everyone at the Beykoz Shoe Factory for their generosity, and also to Fidi The Great.

All the way home

You thought it wouldn’t be hard
You thought you were strong enough
You thought you couldn’t lose
Without lifting a finger

You thought you could do as you liked
And force the people to comply
You thought they would do as you say
But too many resisted

So now you’re shamed, you lost, you fell
Now is the time for you to take your leave
Time’s up, you need to go

You thought yourself important
You thought the people would love you
They don’t want to see you here anymore
They want you to go back from where you came

All the way home

If you look deep inside your heart
You will surely find
This task wasn’t yours to handle
Your ego made you stay

Don’t lie, you must be sad at night
With all that has passed
It is not too late to leave it all
Just start walking

All the way home

You can take a motorbike
You can take a Vespa
You can take a boat
Or a Honda
You can even use your feet
If you want the time to meditate
The only thing we are asking
Is for you to go home

So now you’re shamed, you lost, you fell
Now is the time for you to take your leave
Time’s up, you need to go

We say this to help you get your life back together
Leave with us what you can’t do
Don’t force it, just find your path
Get home safe

Ah
Please do whatever you need to
So that we don’t see you anymore
We saw you too much
Ah
It is not your misfortune we want
We just don’t want to see you anymore
We saw you too much

The only thing that I fear about taking back the House is that it finally gives Trump an enemy.

He has had no one to fight until this point. Once the Dems take Congress Trump will have direction for his venom and the media will treat it as a battle amongst equals and revive the balance fairy.

It is going to be horrible.

She Who Must Be Obeyed (with Starfish lever harp) and her partner in Chaski (Adrienne Inglis, who plays classical and folk flutes), (NB: she did all of the shakuhachi flutes in Kill Bill), are performing at a fundraiser for RAICES tomorrow, along with a now American citizen Ukrainian soprano.

Here’s the details:

cccaustin.org

Lizards in Austin should swing by if they can. It’s a program of what immigrants musically brought with them to this country. And it is for a great cause. RAICES are the definition of the good guys in this travesty of dealing with refugees.

I’ve been living in the house with SWMBO for the last several weeks as she has preparing for this, and it’s going to be a great show.

Yes, I am a good husband. Although I made a lot of grocery store, library, and runs to Vulcan Video just to get out of the house. Spouses of musicians will understand.

Yesterday someone here pointed out to me that the actual % of nazis in the US was closer to 12% than the short-hand 40% I was using in a post.

Technically, that may well be correct, but seen from Europe, increasingly, if you support a nazi, you’re a nazi, and as long as Trump’s popular support appears to hover at 40%, we think there are 40% nazis, and for all intents and purposes, it doesn’t matter if they carry a card, believe in white supremacy, etc. What matters is, they support the nazi-in-chief who, technically again, is not a real nazi, I know, but behaves like one and fosters their agenda.

Here is a joke I heard recently in my little village :

Trump visits a mental hospital. The patients give him the nazi salute. As he passes down the line he sees a man who isn’t saluting. “Why aren’t you saluting like the others?” Trump asks. “I’m the nurse,” says the man. “I’m not crazy!”

It’s not that funny, but it should tell you what the public perception is.

This tweet is just one of many from Jasmin that is highlighting what’s going on in the west. Bannon has been in Europe aligning with the bad actors again. Brexit happened and Boris wants to grab power and push the alt-right forward there. Have ya checked out the new Ford despot in Ontario.

I am aware of how bad it is here and there’s nothing wrong with pointing it out but I hope there are people in all these countries under attack by the alt-right and Russian operatives minding the store. I hope we all are ready to face what could be a critical fight for liberal democracies and human rights.

While I don’t seek to minimize at all the consequences of Hungary or Austria or Poland falling into the nazi camp, or even Italy, which is an ever greater cause of concern — and, trust me, this is not at all underestimated — to the degree that even Brexit seems to have taken a backseat in our political landscape — the fact remains that the US of A is the mastodon in the room.

I don’t need to spell out that what your country does (or doesn’t do) has huge ramifications; you sneeze; we all die from consumption. Your 40% is far more worrisome to us than the Poles or the Hungarians.

When you’re using the term so loosely, you erase its core meaning and this, in turn, takes the actual Nazis (like David Duke etc.) off the hook, legitimizes them by making them no different from what is already seen as legitimate (whether we like it or not; it’s Realpolitik).

If you need to use a word, why not “protofascists”? (And no, 40% are not even fascist, many of them are simply dumb and racist; albeit the core of the Trump mob is of course predominantly fascist, but they’re far fewer than the 40%).

The money behind neo-Confederate Corey Stewart’s U.S. Senate campaign

In short, the big checks come mostly from developers who have had a stake in the decisions of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, of which Stewart is chair. There are exceptions but the motive appears to be straightforward graft and payoff rather than ideology.

41
Nyet  Aug 18, 2018 • 1:40:55am

A bit of psychology. Call someone a “Nazi”, and this is glossed over as a basic political insult. Call someone a “fascist”, and the effect is similar, albeit still slightly more pronounced than with “Nazi”. Use “neo-fascist” or “protofascist”, and the brain has a bit more to process, and that’s important.

Similarly, call Chucky a Holocaust denier, and the same people who would have dismissed his characterization as white supremacist as a partisan exaggeration are suddenly more likely to pay a bit more attention.

Angela is holding on by her toenails in Germany, I expect the next elections to show a surge in the AfD as the right wing of her party abandons her.

As long as the right-wing AfD and the leftist Die Linke are shut out of ruling coalitions as they have been to date, Germany will be ungovernable and unable to find a parliamentary majority. That means letting one of those parties in.

My thought is that a lot of the criminality of the Trump administration is being ignored by what currently passes for moderate Republicans because they’ve gotten so used to hysterical bullshit from their side that they think it’s more of the same. Once you’ve been told that the President is a foreign impostor and that the Democratic candidate ran a child sex ring, while believing-it-not-really-believing-it, it’s easy to lump the current news into it.

And all these nationalist parties are shit at governance. Once they’ve decided that everything is the fault of The Other, it just doesn’t occur to them that they need to take responsibility and solve problems themselves. This gets obvious to the electorate after a while (like the Quebec separatists), and they get kicked out if it’s still possible, but they can do a lot of damage in the meantime.

I guess Die Linke is not as bad as the AfD since at least they don’t seem to be too xenophobic. So if it takes them to stop a neo-fascist surge/takeover, then so be it. However both parties are Putin’s shills.

There’s a decent article in the Guarniad about the new Italian government fucking up the response to the Genoa bridge collapse here. Surprise surprise, they’re just trying to blame everybody else instead of realising that they’re the damn government now. Tried to blame the EU, even though the commission wrote a report warning of the danger and have allocated Italy a multi-billion euro budget for road infrastructure.

And the main party, who poo-poohed the danger a couple of years ago and was the main driver for opposing an alternate route (NIMBYism isn’t just for California), is now trying to erase history.

Oh yeah, and if they really do rebuild this bridge in five months, like the article says, I’m never driving on it.

You can imagine how wingnuts are taking this, from FOX News Channel to just about every Christian publication in the nation.

wsaz.com

The city of Parkersburg, WVa is being sued by the Freedom from Religion Foundation (which detractors of FFRF call “an atheist group”) to end the practice of opening city council meetings with the Lord’s Prayer.

The city council claims the prayers are held “before the meeting is officially called to order.”

Courts have repeatedly ruled on this and found it unconstitutional. In one meeting, a woman suggested substituting the prayer with a non-sectarian moment of silence; the council ignored the suggestion.

thenewscenter.tv

Another station called around to several cities and county commissions in West Virginia and found many of them are doing the same thing, but are waiting to see the outcome in Federal court over the suit against the city of Parkersburg.

For most of the boomers it was their fathers who fought the nazis & it was well explained to me & I passed it on. We did, however grow up in peace and my parents didn’t empasize who they killed, they spoke of fighting for the peace.

It is history we should be telling our children. The defeat of the Nazis and the Japanese resulted in the allies rebuilding the countries that they laid to waste - and this made our prior enemies some of our best friends - until trump decided that should change.

Owning a Les Paul is on my bucket list. I do have a Gibson called The Paul, which dates from 1979. The electronics need to be replaced and the neck was cracked and fixed. Still not sure if this thing can keep in tune.

Still not a Les Paul, though.

‘The Paul’ is an extremely underrated guitar. I’d count that one as an LP.

Don’t be too quick to swap out electronics - those Gibson pickups are considered by many to be overlooked gems. Have someone take a look at the electronics and see if there are other less radical fixes to be made.

I think the Dems may have been in disarray, until they put all the deplorables in a basket. Look how that worked out. As badly as showing them sympathy for their attachment to their guns and stuff worked out. Dems just can’t win, sometimes. Always trying to straighten out other people’s messes. The Moon of Alabama website, which is referred to quite often on some influential websites, has one whale of a post justifying not only Brennan’s revocation of his TOPSEC access, and at the same time praises Hair Furor and his backers:

Since Trump became president Brennan publicly opposed him. That was a huge mistake. He is no match for Trump. Be revoking Brennan’s clearance Trump is now elevating him to ‘hero’ of the so called ‘resistance’ against him which he connects to the deep state. This is the Trump playbook:

[R]unning against the deep state provides Trump a rhetorical crutch. It’s a built-in excuse for failing to deliver on his 2016 campaign promises. Sitting presidents usually have to run as incumbents. Trump can try to run for re-election as an outsider. And is there a better poster boy for the alleged deep state than Brennan?
The idiots who express solidarity with Brennan by offering up their security clearances confirm, simply by doing so, that there IS a deep state cabal that is opposed to Trump. Attacking Brennan and them will help Trump to get reelected.

Trump uses the same playbook when he attacks the “fake news media” for opposing him. He is right in that nearly all U.S. and international editors favored Hillery Clinton over Trump. This week 200 U.S. papers united to write editorials against Trump’s attacks against the “freedom of the press”. They fell for his trick:

Most journalists agree that there’s a great need for Trump rebuttals. I’ve written my share. But this [Boston] Globe-sponsored coordinated editorial response is sure to backfire: It will provide Trump with circumstantial evidence of the existence of a national press cabal that has been convened solely to oppose him. When the editorials roll off the press on Thursday, all singing from the same script, Trump will reap enough fresh material to whale on the media for at least a month. His forthcoming speeches almost write themselves: By colluding against me, the fake media proved once and for all, that they are in cahoots with the Democrats and have declared themselves to be my true political opposition …
Trump is excellent in playing his domestic opponents. Brennan made a huge mistake in publicly opposing him. He is now standing in the limelight and people will only dig further into his role in the “Russian collusion” campaign. Yesterday Brennan authored a New York Times Op Ed headlined President Trump’s Claims of No Collusion Are Hogwash. It does not provide any evidence for the “hogwash” claim. Brennan can not show that there was a Trump campaign collusion with Russia or anyone else.

Richard Burr, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, gave a somewhat salty and fitting response:

“Director Brennan’s recent statements purport to know as fact that the Trump campaign colluded with a foreign power. If Director Brennan’s statement is based on intelligence he received while still leading the CIA, why didn’t he include it in the Intelligence Community Assessment released in 2017? If his statement is based on intelligence he has seen since leaving office, it constitutes an intelligence breach. If he has some other personal knowledge of or evidence of collusion, it should be disclosed to the Special Counsel, not The New York Times.
“If, however, Director Brennan’s statement is purely political and based on conjecture, the president has full authority to revoke his security clearance as head of the Executive Branch.”

In short: “Nut up or shut up.”
