Nixon, generally very competent, bungled and botched his handling of Watergate. Trump, a total incompetent, is bungling and botching his handling of Russiagate. Fate is never kind to bunglers and/or botchers! Unlike Nixon, however, Trump won’t leave willingly or graciously

Both are gonna be done in by tapes

I never thought of Nixon as ‘gracious’. I did enjoy the day he resigned. The only time I had a similar joy, was when Frank Ivancie was defeated as Mayor of Portland, OR. Great night.

I really enjoyed watching the live stream of the helicopter that took Bush away from DC after Obama’s inauguration while the crowds chanted “na na na na - na na na na - hey hey hey - goodbye”. That was so incredibly satisfying. It feels like a full generation ago.

Unless there is an actual tape of Trump engaging in a flagrant crime, there won’t be 67 votes in the Senate to remove him. However, I do wonder what if he loses the 2020 election, then insists there was “massive voter fraud” and refuses to vacate the office? That could be our biggest constitutional crisis since 1861.

Distill it down further and you get to Orwell. They start with the hate and then create the justifications for it. Sometimes it looks like a formal “study” and sometimes it’s just informal garbage mouth with less fancy language. It all gets them where they want to be though. Their hate must be truth.

A story not really about the headline:

Australia drought: New South Wales town ‘mobbed’ by thirsty emus

The titular subject:

The flightless birds are desperately searching for food and water in Broken Hill, local animal rescue services say.

“They’re actually walking down our main street. We’re seeing mobs of them,” wildlife worker Emma Singleton said.

The real story:

Australia’s most populous state, which produces about a quarter of the country’s agricultural output, was officially declared entirely in drought on 8 August.

Turns out she had had serious issues with heroin use for years, and I had no idea. They found her dead in a room in her house. I contacted some friends of hers, and one replied to me saying she had been in rehab with her years ago, and that it was not a suicide. She said that my friend had been hospitalized several times because of infections from dirty needles, etc., and that it may have contributed to her death.

Things that I dealt with with her now make a lot more sense.

Anyone who has known Trump for years, and doesn’t have a stake in his political career or the GOP, says the same. He is unwell and has been getting progressively worse over the past 18 months.

Ahh yes. Since he has been in office 18 months he has gotten worse.

No shit.

Because he has been scrambling from the start arrogantly thinking “he can do anything, cuz like he has a good brain. Better than the Generals”

Then there has been fuck-up after fuck-up regarding Mueller because Donny got that started himself being so innocent he had no need to fire Comey…but did anyway.

The pressure of it all is frying what little brain power he had. He is burnt out but won’t allow for it. It’s only going to get worse. He will be his own worse enemy until this nightmare finds some end.

And the Republicans watch with their fingers up their butts counting their bucks. Yeah, it’s all gross.

When The Older Boy and I realized the same actor played Captain Stottlemeyer on “Monk”, he looked at me and said, in a perfect Stottlemeyer voice, “It puts the lotion on its skin, Monk.”

Ted Levine also played Alan Shepard in From the Earth to the Moon a few years after SotL; he was great as Shepard.

Yes.

Yes.

This is probably the correct answer. I think the mistake I make is trying to assume there is some kind of normal thought process involved. For a sociopath like Trump, cynically manipulative and delusional are not mutually exclusive states of being.

Lt. Cpt. Rozanov tried to teach them—but his English wasn’t that great, either.

Read the original: The Off-Islanders by Nathaniel Benchley. It was much better than the movie.

I wonder if they have it at the public library across the street. It’s pretty damn pricey on Amazon. $46 hardcover, $98 paperback

Sincere question:

Could Trump and his people really be cynical and manipulative enough to send Rudy onto Sunday morning TV strictly for the purpose of creating a distraction?

Could Trump really be so insane as to imagine Rudy does a good job of representing him?

Personally, I find it hard to imagine either explanation.

I’d say it’s time for Rudy to leave the team to “spend more time with his family”…but of course, who would believe that Rudy’s family actually wants to spend time with him?

Donny made clear when he hired Rudy why he was doing so: He thinks that this is all a big reality TV show and he wants a TV lawyer to represent him in the media. He’s totally convinced that the key to beating Mueller is in the court of public opinion, that his ass will be saved if he can convince the public that he’s the “victim” of a grand conspiracy to remove him from office.

I make avocado fries in the oven…they are coated in panko (dipped in olive oil so the panko sticks).

I knew I was on to something! Maybe dip them in chocolate fondue?

Here’s the recipe for the McCarthy Salad.

parade.com

McCarthy Salad
(Photo courtesy of The Beverly Hills Hotel)
The Beverly Hills Hotel (aka “The Pink Palace”) is a legendary Old Hollywood spot. The hotel’s Polo Lounge has served this chopped salad since the 1940s, when it was created for frequent guest and local polo player Neil McCarthy. It’s been on the menu ever since, and the hotel serves nearly 600 McCarthy Salads each week. This concoction is very similar to another iconic LA creation—the Cobb salad.

Polo Lounge McCarthy Salad

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 garlic clove, grated
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
12 oz iceberg lettuce, finely chopped
12 oz hearts of romaine, finely chopped
2 oz watercress, finely chopped
1/2 lb red beets, roasted and finely diced
1/2 lb aged Cheddar cheese, finely diced
1/2 lb applewood-smoked bacon, cooked and finely chopped
3 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 lb grilled chicken breast, finely diced
1 large vine-ripened tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced
1 avocados, peeled and sliced

DIRECTIONS

Combine first 5 ingredients in a measuring cup; whisk to combine.

Combine iceberg, romaine and watercress. Divide among 4 large salad bowls. Arrange beets, cheese, bacon, eggs, chicken and tomatoes artfully on each serving. Drizzle with dressing. Top with avocado and serve with extra dressing on the side.

Vic Berger has a new video out. It’s Justin Bieber and his pastors from Hillsong. Of course, it’s full of enhanced audio and the usual video editing tricks. It’s not yet on his YouTube, but you can go to Facebook and been entranced and/or repelled, kind of like you were with Jim Bakker’s food buckets.

I’d note that the “Biebs brushing his teeth with a little toothbrush during an interview” part really did happen. It’s not an outtake. Justin whips out the toothbrush at about 2 minutes in.
