Everything Else May Suck, but We Still Have Tower of Power: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Aug. 13, 2018 | Felix Contreras — When the 10 members of Tower of Power were in place behind Bob Boilen’s desk, strategically positioned around the band’s famous five-piece horn section, their first collective blast three beats into the sound check literally made the video crew jump. It was more a force of nature than a sound, and an impressive display of the “five fingers operating as one hand” concept of band cohesiveness.

From the group’s beginning in Oakland in 1968, its soul disciples stood out from the peace-and-love scene in the San Francisco Bay. Their dedication to the horn-driven soul heard on recordings from the Stax and Atlantic record labels evolved to such a sophisticated level as to make the Tower of Power Horns an entity unto themselves. Eventually artists as diverse as Santana, the Grateful Dead and even Elton John enlisted them to give their music an authentic connection to the scene.

I have to confess that this show was mostly a labor of self-indulgent love, since I’ve been a fan since about 1972. So it was a joy to listen to the unmistakable sounds of my youth as the band delivered both “What Is Hip” and “So Very Hard to Go” with so much vitality, it sounded as if they were just written last week. During the performance of the title track from their new album, “The Soul Side of Town,” the playing, the passion and the precision remains unchanged after all the years.

1968 was one hell of a year musically, as we’ve seen from this year’s many anniversary celebrations of albums, events and bands. Add Tower of Power to that shortlist of artists for whom that moment was an early rehearsal for what would become a five decade career. A band this big will inevitably have some members come and go, but it’s important to note that the original songwriting nucleus of bari saxophonist Stephen “Funky Doctor” Kupa and bandleader/tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo continue to write and perform, as does original drummer David Garibaldi.

I want to write that the band has become an institution. But that conjures images of stuffy old men looking down professorially on youthful funksters, occasionally showing them how it was done in a long-lost golden era. Instead, Tower of Power remains as vital and full of life-affirming funk and soul, if not more, as they were in 1968. The band’s dedication, hard work and connection to us long-time fans prove that a good idea is timeless. If you need proof, just watch this video.

Congrats, fellas. It’s been a very soulful 50 years.

I am sickened by the way Breitbart and Drudge are running with this Asia Argento story. Is the idea that one bad and hypocritical person accusing Harvey Weinstein means that all of the other similar claims against him are false?

Of course, I am overreacting…the only idea here is “owning the libs”, nothing more.

The band I was in from 74-79 couldn’t afford any roadies, but we all thought it was SO worth it to haul a Hammond model A and huge Leslie speaker around. I was so spoiled by that sound.

Edit: A transcript from the dedication: hgreen.people.ua.edu.

I trust I may be pardoned for one allusion, howbeit it is rather personal. One hundred yards from where we stand, less than ninety days perhaps after my return from Appomattox, I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, because upon the streets of this quiet village she had publicly insulted and maligned a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison, and for thirty nights afterwards slept with a double-barrel shot gun under my head.

Check out this story of people, probably Bannon and Miller, attempting to get Trump to strip Obama of his security clearance. Every former president is still kept up to date on security: m.dailykos.com:

As Trump stepped up his public and private attacks on Obama, some of the new President’s advisers thought that he should take the extraordinary step of denying Obama himself access to intelligence briefings that were made available to all of his living predecessors. Trump was told about the importance of keeping former Presidents, who frequently met with foreign leaders, informed. In the end, Trump decided not to exclude Obama, at the urging of McMaster.

I was 11 years old when the Civil War Centennial started in 1961. With some notable exceptions, it was a 4 year long carnival of Lost Cause propaganda, with an almost Disneyesque presentation of the Confederacy.
I remember thinking even then that there was something very wrong with this. Weren’t these people shooting at the same flag (minus a few stars) to which we pledged allegiance every morning? Weren’t they fighting to keep their slaves? Some of the adults I knew (though not my parents) tried to tell me that it was really about tariffs or states rights or something. That was transparent bullshit even to a child. If the south had won, they would have kept slavery, they said so over and over and Jim Crow proved that they had meant it.
It has taken almost 60 years, but the chickens have come home to roost. That great national exercise in cognitive dissonance, honoring the Confederacy, is finally coming to an end.

That’s the thing. We papered over the war, which meant we papered over slavery. It’s shocking to hear sentiments like those, but as you think about it, it’s all perfectly natural for people who thought God put Africans on Earth for them to own, to buy and sell like cattle, to rape, to whip to death if they felt justified. To use the power of the state to hunt down and punish any who dared seek freedom.

It’s jarring to hear racism so plainly and viciously stated. Hell, I suspect a fair number of Aryan Nations types would find that story shocking.

It happens that the first generation of Polaris ballistic missile submarines were under construction just before and during the Civil War Centennial.

They were supposed to be named for “eminent Americans who contributed to freedom.”
Reflecting the spirit of the times, 2 of them were named for Confederates.
USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601)
USS Stonewall Jackson (SSBN-634)

Kelli Ward is awful, just awful. That said, I hope she or Joe Arpaio is the R candidate. Arpaio for obvious reasons, but Ward because she’s a crass shitheel. When it was announced that McCain had brain cancer, Ward came out and said that first, McCain should resign, and second, that she should be appointed by Gov. Ducey to McCain’s seat. Obviously, that didn’t happen. I had to educate a teen supporter of Ward’s on Twitter a few months back regarding this.

If Martha McSally is the candidate, Kyrsten Sinema is going to have a tough time.

I chewed out a guy yesterday for criticizing a Planned Parenthood fundraiser. I have gotten to the point where if an anti-abortion person comes across my path, I just let them have it. I want them to understand exactly what outlawing abortion means—that women will die. I know they don’t care, because they’re purity ponies, just like Bernie Bros, but hopefully someone else will read what I say. I am tired, very tired, of people thinking they can just camp out in women’s reproductive organs.

Ward is sickening. Still remember when she was pushing legislation to outlaw chemtrails in Arizona…

From the last thread, because I am way behind (my Internet service sucks basketballs through a hose):

re: #123 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis

He probably thinks of himself as a stupid Conservative, so the Democrat wasn’t even an option to him.

At this point, the Republican Party (or more accurately, their most ardent supporters) fit the Bite Model of Mind Control by Stephen Hassan (goes to Apologetics Index with the description of the elements of a cult)

The GOP has been going that way ever since the John Birch Society and other such groups aligned themselves with the GOP under Goldwater’s campaign for President (but conservatism as a whole stretches back even further, such as the Know Nothings).

Destructive mind control can be understood in terms of four basic components, which form the acronym BITE:

Behavior Control
Information Control
Thought Control
Emotional Control

It is important to understand that destructive mind control can be determined when the overall effect of these four components promotes dependency and obedience to some leader or cause.

It is not necessary for every single item on the list to be present. Mind controlled cult members can live in their own apartments, have nine-to-five jobs, be married with children, and still be unable to think for themselves and act independently. - Source: Mind Control - The BITE Model, Steve Hassan, Freedom of Mind

(more, with links to Mr. Hassan’s Website and a descriptive video by Mr. Hassan)

Note cults can be very normal-seeming: Jim Jones got his start with Oral Roberts, and when the People’s Temple was growing by leaps and bounds, even Rosalind Carter attended the opening of one of his churches.

re: #109 ObserverArt

I don’t believe a lot of people actually really read the bible. Sure, they are Christians, but they let the pastors lead their thinking.

I think that is especially true of Evangelicals.

Their actual knowledge of the bible is taught to them in bible schools and then fed to them by their pastors/preachers. There is very little self teaching and wanting to understand for one’s own knowledge.

As has been noted in many surveys and investigations, atheists are the most familiar with the Bible in the USA (partly for self-defence).

It has been said that the best way to create an atheist is to get a Christian to read the Bible (all of it).

Adding to my comment, just to my west in La Grange, Wyo. is Frontier School of the Bible.

It is in a town of 300 people, nearly 100 miles from Scottsbluff, Nebr. or Cheyenne, Wyo. The nearest city is Bridgeport (my county seat, population 1,100), about fifty miles away. It serves as “secondary education” for children who are brought up in sectarian education such as religious homeschooling or Evangelical private schools (and considering the placement of the school, to keep them as far from the secular world as possible for a few more years).

Take a moment to read the curriculum of this non-accredited college. They teach only the Bible, and how to think about it, in preparation for missionary or church work.

You can imagine how they want you to think about it. The school ain’t cheap, either. (They are about to start classes now.)

None of their faculty will talk to my wife or me when we are in La Grange (we are of the Devil as atheists). It doesn’t matter how nice we are.

Across the street from them is a restaurant owned by a very devout Mennonite family: When we are in that restaurant, faculty from the college will leave as soon as we walk in. People who see our unique car for the area from that school will not come in the business when my wife and I are there; as such, we’ve lately taken to parking on a different block.

Students who work in the restaurant will not serve us (though the owners do, and are quite nice to us).

By the way, this is also the real-world example of “well, if a business won’t serve you” (like a cake shop) you can just take your business elsewhere. That restaurant is the only one for fifty miles around. If the owners threw us out, there is no other place.

Man, I sympathize with you….this country’s gone competely apeshit over the past couple of years (and more).

However, we the (somewhat) sane have to manage to hold things together to even have a shot at turning things around and to not do the “woe is me” and “we deserve what we get” thing, because that turns into self-fulfilling prophecy.

For no other reason, we must hold the line and turn the tide for the people we care about and that means a lot of work, but it has to be done.

Making and keeping social progress is and has always been a never-ending marathon, not a sprint…we have to make sure those on our side understand that, because them not understanding that has a lot to do with how we’re in the spot we’re in right now.

Good and bad news at the same time in my county newspaper (it doesn’t have a Website so I will sumarise the article):

Secretary of State John A. Gale (R) has certified the petition drive to get a referendum on the November ballot to expand Medicaid under the ACA in Nebraska.

The Medicaid expansion has been fought by the GOP in the ostensibly non-partisan Unicameral since the ACA passed, despite increasing public support for it. In an attempt to derail legislative action, a GOP senator said he would support a public referendum on the issue.

That petition is now certified, but hold on. The same GOP senator has now filed suit along with former senators and the state GOP to block the referendum from appearing on the ballot, claiming the referendum and the ACA violate the state constitution (they don’t) and would raise property taxes (it wouldn’t, property taxes are assessed in this state by counties and incorporated towns).

The point of the suit is to tie up the referendum to prevent it from appearing on the ballot by running out the clock against an expected blue wave in the state at the polls, along with the referendum being popular.

Failing that (if the court throws out the case), the fallback position is legislation would need to be passed to implement the referendum, and the GOP says they won’t consider such legislation.

Currently, the Unicameral is made up of 31 Republicans, 16 Democrats, 1 Libertarian, and 1 independent. The (R) and (L) senators oppose Medicaid expansion, the (D) and (i) senators support it.

This was a very rare editorial from the publisher of the county paper - he urges voters to vote “yes” on the referendum and the Unicameral to uphold the will of the people.

Between my Catholic upbringing and all the Campus Crusade for Christ yahoos knocking on dorm room doors (which we had stuffed with a towel) I was put off Christianity entirely for a long time.

Took a while until I met some Christians who quietly but sincerely lived their beliefs. It was not enough to win me over to their religion but I did learn that there are aspects of it worthy of respect and admiration.

I also dislike statistics thrown out with no supporting evidence about “abuse begetting more abuse.” (Someone in that thread commented that 40-80% - an awfully wide range - of children abused go on to become abusers.)

That has been studied. Those figures are wildly inflated. It is something like the claim that people who commit mass gun murders are “mentally ill” and therefore those with mental illness are much more likely to commit crimes like that (instead of the actual numbers which indicate those who are mentally ill are most likely to be victims). The overwhelming majority of those abused as a child never become abusers themselves, and even less so those abused as an adult.

And as I understand the Me Too movement, it is people (primarily women but some men) coming forth with their own stories of being assaulted, whether as adults or children.

I don’t know enough about her or the controversy surrounding her to have an opinion on this, though someone in that Twitter thread pointed out the clickbait headline the LA Times put on Twitter is exactly the opposite of what the headline reads on their Website.

There are a ton of people on that thread making the “abused become abusers” argument (which is a false argument), because it is a “just so” common-sense story. (In a sense it is like a religious story, the sins of the parent are repeated in the children.) Of course, “just so” claims are made because they justify dismissing an argument: “See, she abused someone, therefore that proves victims will become abusers.”

Aside from the incredible stigma of even telling a story of child or adult sexual assault, such hot takes ensure that others won’t. Damn, if I had such a story to tell, I sure wouldn’t tell anyone at all with the way society treats people who do come out with their stories.

Microsoft Disrupts APT28 Hacking Campaign Aimed at US Midterm Elections
By Catalin Cimpanu August 21, 2018 03:43 AM
Intro:

Microsoft revealed last night that it successfully disrupted a hacking campaign associated with the Russian military intelligence service GRU.

The group is known in infosec industry circles as APT28, Fancy Bear, or Strontium, and has been previously linked to cyber-espionage campaigns aimed at numerous governments around the world, including to the hack of the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2016 US Presidential Election.
Microsoft takes over six APT28 domains

Microsoft President Brad Smith said that Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) successfully executed a court order to transfer control of six internet domains created by the group. The six domains are:

URLs omitted here, just in case.

The first domain was registered to look like a domain for the International Republican Institute, which promotes democratic principles. The second was registered to mimic the Hudson Institute, an organization known for its discussions on election cybersecurity. The last four were blatant attempts at mimicking domains part of the US Senate’s IT infrastructure. Microsoft said it notified all three organizations.
Microsoft has now taken over 84 APT28 domains

Wish state and local governments would start taking this cyberwar shit seriously.

re: #148 unproven innocence

I’m not sure how states could do much even if the federal government actually supported them.

With the heavy push to put everything on the Internet including voter registration rolls, any hole a hacker can find he or she can exploit. There is no such thing as secure software. There are way more hackers looking for such things than people looking to plug holes, and they only plug holes when they become aware of them (usually after an attack has already occurred).

The solution is to go back to the old system (paper registrations and paper ballots). “Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should do something” applies to Internet records as well.

In my state, while registration records are on-line, those records are not what determines if you get to vote. The card you filled out at the county clerk’s office which she keeps on file is what determines whether you get a mailed paper ballot. (That card is also what has to be physically verified to file to run for an office.)

The problem is not just the GOP either. The overwhelming majority of the populace wants quickness and ease of the Internet over the security and relative slowness of paper records. Unless the populace takes the threat seriously, the government won’t either.

For corporations it’s worse: Security costs money, therefore they won’t expend money on it unless they have to. Hospitals which use Social Security numbers to track patients and outdated software leaves patients open to exploitation by thieves as well.

Dear America, you have no choice, but you have to speak up and stand up & act up. We’ll have much to thank the current President for because he has woken us up to how fragile freedom really is

This should all show us that a functioning democracy requires a lot of work and attention, a lot of independent, non-partisan oversight and in the end, it requires an informed and educated electorate.

“gamechanger” … O_o

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAZ) — President Donald trump is expected to announce a climate change plan this week — the same week he will visit Charleston, West Virginia — that would give individual states the power to decide pollution regulations.

According to the New York Times, the Trump administration will propose a “vast overhaul of climate change regulations that would allow individual states to decide how, or even whether, to curb carbon dioxide emissions from coal plants.”

President Trump is expected to highlight the proposal at his rally in Charleston Tuesday, the New York Times reports.

“It’s wonderful that such an announcement could be made here in West Virginia where coal is so instrumental,” Bill Raney with the West Virginia Coal Association told WSAZ. “Gives control back to the states, actually approaching it from a reasonable standpoint.”

This would significantly weaken the Obama-era Clean Power Plan and is a setback for environmentalists who want to curb carbon dioxide emissions.

The New York Times article goes on to say, “The plan would also relax pollution rules for power plants that need upgrades.”

“If a mine wants a new boiler or equipment of some kind, there won’t be as many regulatory hoops to jump through,” Raney said. “So it’s some relief for these mines that want to modernize but haven’t been able to do since the regulation changes.”

because everybody knows that pollution doesn’t cross state lines…

Been getting churched up on the recently toppled Silent Sam statue at UNC.

Sam was made in the heart of Yankee-land, Chestnut Hill Massachusetts, by a Canadian, John Wilson. It cost the United Daughters of the Confederacy $7500 in 1913, equivalent to about $185,000 today. That kind of comparison is notably imprecise, but having been involved with a couple of similar projects, I would guess that would be about the current cost of an equivalent statue.
Wilson also produced a number of statues for Union organizations, notably the extraordinarily powerful Washington Grays Monument (“Pennsylvania Volunteer”) in Philadelphia.

Starr did go on a fishing expedition when his initial investigation into failed real estate deals turned up nothing against Bill or Hillary. It’s only then that he got derailed into the affair in the WH and subsequent lies about the affair.

Starr headed Baylor all during a massive and widespread sex abuse scandal, which implicated everyone in the athletic department, and which he failed to properly administer. Starr lifted suspension of one of the football players implicated in the abuses, right before that player was indicted on multiple crimes.

Mueller is everything Starr wasn’t.

Mueller’s methodical and not leaking details. Moreover, Mueller’s spinning off any crimes he uncovers that isn’t directly in his mandate to other prosecutors so he can stay focused on the Russia-Trump connections.

The reason it isn’t wrapping up quickly is because there’s so many connections and leads that have to be tracked down. That’s because Trump’s entire cabal of cronies engaged in wrongdoing from the petty to the high crimes territory - including Trump himself.

He also knows that any leak, any inconsistency or procedural error will be seized upon and held up as reason to discredit the entire investigation.

He has to present a case that forces the GOP to either act on it or risk being accused of political collusion themselves, although regardless of the strength of the case, I suspect they will risk the latter option.

“Perjury” is not defined by “his word against the President’s” as Rudy tried to describe it, but when the President overtly contradicts himself in sworn testimony or contradicts established facts.

At least the UDC sought out a real sculptor to do an original work when they commissioned Silent Sam (and perhaps some of that $7500 went for casting costs): a lot of Civil War memorial sculptures were, in effect, off-the-shelf models: Johnny Reb and Billy Yank differing only in the heads (different hats) and USA/CSA inscriptions added at the foundry as suitable.

ADD: As usual, Wikipedia had already updated their page on Wilson to included Silent Sam’s toppling yesterday: however, I felt I had to edit it slightly as it (for whatever reason) seemed to indicate the University had condoned, rather than condemned the “removal”.

There’s not gonna be a Blue Wave. Dems will gain some seats, but probably not enough to make a difference.

A Blue Wave implies that people are educated enough to see the unapologetic corruption that Trump trades in on a daily basis

A Blue Wave means that people look at our government kidnapping brown children as something horrible, not “Well, it ain’t my kid so who cares?”

A Blue Wave means that the idiots who call themselves “independents” and Republicans who are genuinely horrified by their party will do the right thing and vote Democratic.

A Blue Wave means Democrats will come out in force in a mid term election, something they almost never do.

That’s not the American electorate I’m familiar with.

Whenever this “history and heritage” argument raises its ugly head, I bat it down with a quote from Virginia-born Union General Henry “The Rock of Chickamauga” Thomas:

“[T]he greatest efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the government, thus wiping out with their own hands their own stains; a species of self-forgiveness amazing in its effrontery, when it is considered that life and property—justly forfeited by the laws of the country, of war, and of nations, through the magnanimity of the government and people—was not exacted from them.”

And frankly, David’s contention that Paul Ryan’s effectiveness is a raw byproduct of his comparative youth is a ridiculously simplistic non-thought. Ryan is effective because the GOP controls all three branches of government, because young people like to talk shit but don’t vote.

a couple of thoughts

- ryan has not been “effective” given that the GOP controls both houses and the white house

- david et al are not stupid. some of what they say is from ‘young and inexperienced’. They will learn.

the process is:
build a coalition
run
win

No one in politics ‘moves out of the way’ to make it easier for you.

Today’s kitty update…

The doctor called this morning and said she was concerned about the head scan/surgery on Trixie today because she hasn’t eaten since she was admitted (she said it’s not unusual - cats are notorious for not eating in unfamiliar surroundings). She offered us two options:

1. Postpone the surgery and bring Trixie home to see if we can get her eating in more familiar surroundings, or

2. Attach a feeding tube and get her sufficiently nourished to withstand the anesthesia.

After talking to my wife, we decided that we’re going to bring her home and re-schedule the surgery. The doctor did say her swelling has gone down ‘significantly,’ so that’s promising. I’ll need to call in tomorrow and let them know if she’s eating again, at which point we’d re-schedule. And if she doesn’t start eating, it’ll be back to the hospital to get her hooked up to a feeding tube.

Okay, settled. And then…

While I was on the phone, I started to notice a vague rumbling coming from outside. I go to the front door, and lo and behold, there’s a backhoe jackhammering the street in front of my house. The local gas company did upgrades on the gas lines in our neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, but today they’re out there digging up all the road patches they originally put in.

I walked to the end of my driveway to take a look, and there are dump trucks and construction equipment up and down my block. I’m stuck here. I called the doctor back and told her I wouldn’t be able to pick Trixie up until later this afternoon.

Never a dull moment around this joint.

Yes, they have…and it is to be commended.

But David Hogg needs to be aware of how politics works overall, and with the New Republican Party, Fox News and wingnut radio and web sites.

He should concentrate on getting ALL Democrats elected so they can get the power needed to make the changes he wants.

Nancy Pelosi is not the target at this time. His rhetoric just does not do any good right now. But he seems to be locked in on age instead of what people can do with the power they already have versus some others that may be new and sparkling…but don’t have the political tools and associations to be someone like Speaker of the House.

Josh Marshall’s take:

We’re getting more information on that note from the jury David noted below. The jury asked the judge what they should do if they “cannot come to a consensus for a single” count and if they can’t what does that mean for the “final verdict.” This strongly suggests that they have reached consensus on most or all of the remaining 17 charges. They’re hung up on a single charge. In other words, they’ve made a lot of progress. We’d now expect the judge to ask them to take more time and try to reach consensus on that final charge.

pelosi’s a rep running in one district in CA
she’s going to win that, right?

when the dems take the house, then there will be a vote for speaker
she’ll put herself up or she wont (of course she will)

im not sure how this affects everybody else voting in november

That seems consistent with them going longer yesterday. If they were down to a single count, they probably thought they could wrap it up and deliver a verdict, but apparently there’s some intractability on that single count. Of course we don’t know the decisions on the other counts - all guilty, all innocent, a combination, nor do we know if the hangup is a single person saying guilty with the rest saying innocent, the opposite or if there’s a more even split on the decision.

Apparently she paid off a male costar for initiating a sexual encounter with him when he was 17. Can’t defend her because he was underage but the story is also kind of fucked up because details of the released documents (a letter between her lawyer and her that the victim would never have had access to) make it clear the story wasn’t leaked by her victim, who hasn’t said anything and isn’t talking. So, whoever leaked the story bypassed his agency once again and made something public he doesn’t seem to have wanted made public.

I think at least half my high school graduating class might have been “victims” of that “crime.” Maybe it’s just my generation….

(Including me? No comment, and GOML.)

Bill DeBlasio, the high taxing Mayor of NYC, just stole my campaign slogan: PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT! That’s not at all nice. No imagination!

“I believe that together we can make America great again,” said Clinton is his 1991 presidential announcement speech. In a campaign stop almost a year later, he called on voters “to make America great again economically, educationally, and socially.”

“This country needs a new administration with a renewed dedication to the dream of America, an administration that will give that dream new life, and make America great again,” Reagan said in a Labor Day speech in 1980.

i met the love of my life at 20 (the best)
four years later we split up (the next 8 were the worst)
by a twist of fate we found each other 28 years after that
separated by 1500 miles we ‘courted’ for a year while figuring out the future
married for almost 10

i was not in particularly poor shape growing up - reasonably athletic, if not coordinated

COLUMBUS - Under different circumstances, Friday’s Ohio Republican Party dinner might have honored Gov. John Kasich for eight years as the state’s largely popular GOP governor.

But Friday’s dinner won’t be about Kasich.

In fact, Kasich said Tuesday that he does not even plan to go. Instead, the night will be about President Donald Trump, who will be headlining the annual fundraiser.

Like so many aspects of GOP politics in Ohio, this isn’t Kasich’s party anymore.

“I don’t need to be going to that dinner,” Kasich said Tuesday, adding that he will spend time with his daughter who is headed to college.

Does this also apply if the situation is reversed and it’s a 32 year old man hooking up with a 17 year old high school student?

There’s power dynamics inherent in this sort of age imbalance, particularly when the younger partner is that young, particularly as we’ve extended childhood for most people through at least the end of high school. Now it may be that this particular 17 year old was mature and capable of making an informed decision about this relationship. There’s obviously a grey area here in the uncoerced consent rule, but she was 32 and he was a minor. She should have known better. This isn’t an 18 year old High School student sleeping with their 17 year old sweetheart.

As part of the plea deal under discussion, Cohen is not expected to cooperate with the government, one source said. However, by pleading guilty both Cohen and prosecutors would avoid the spectacle and uncertainty of a trial.

NBC News reported earlier Tuesday on Cohen’s potential plea deal.

If a deal is reached, it could be a significant blow for Trump. Cohen was part of Trump’s inner circle for more than a decade, working as his personal attorney at the Trump Organization and continuing to advise the President after the election
