It’s depressing when relatives are true “Q” believers.

Hurricane Lane had been expected to weaken a bit, but instead has now become a category 5, just south of Hawaii:

You know what I did this morning for a few hours? I picked up my copy of Fear and Loathing, On The Campaign Trail ‘72 and started from the beginning. Read a hundred pages.

Even then our political system was so hackish and slovenly, the treachery just goes too deep. And you can hear it in HST’s voice in that book, his desperate need to find something *good and righteous* in the political process in America. Spoiler Alert: he never found it, and shot himself in 2005.

You know, as soon as I heard that Cohen and a partner were buying Taxi Medallions, I flashed on the Hunt brothers who attempted to corner the silver market in the 70’s and 80’s.

Here’s a decent synopsis about how it all went wrong:

priceonomics.com

Well, they lost their shirts.

Cohen decided to take a level of control over Taxi Medallions in NYC in the 2000’s/2010’s, buying them up and then bidding them up. Good idea, right? Limited product, artificially manipulated, bending the supply and demand curve for profit.

Great business plan!

And then Uber and Lyft appeared, and Cohen was fucked as hard as a Bangkok bar girl.

He made a bet, he lost the bet, and he went to the dark side of finance and tax law, and he got caught. And when faced with prosecution for the illegal gyrations and outright tax fraud he decided to use, he rolled over on actions he took for the then, candidate, now President of the United States.

History may not exactly repeat, but it does echo. Smart people investigate bubbles before they invest in them. Cohen is not that smart a person. HomeAway and Air BnB have been in operation for over a decade. Transport services were obviously an economic evolutionary niche that could be exploited by an app and smart phones to make money.

Uber and Lyft exploited the hole, and ruined Cohen and his partner. He was playing catchup with his Medallion business and just kept losing money. Lots of it.

Just like the Hunt brothers, when silver crashed. They lost billions.

Cohen didn’t have billions to lose, but he had millions. But he he had an in with Drumpf. And he rode it for all it was worth, and, when caught, turned on his boss.

That’s it. It’s as simple as thieves turning on each other. Cohen sold his soul to work for Drumpf, and when he got caught on a side scam that was economically disastrous for him, he went Judas to save his ass.

I sure remember the late 70s and early 80s when the Hunt Brothers cornered the Silver market. Dad threw a fit when he took film to be developed and it came back costing 3 times as much as it did a month prior because Kodak had problems getting silver to develop black & white prints.

In something of a reversal of the usual pattern, the BernieBros are running a Democrat (Dimitri Shein) in the might-actually-be-competitive-this-year House race to face Dean of the House Don Young, while the “establishment” candidate is independent Alyse Galvin. A few years ago, Alaska Democrats opened up their primaries to independents, Libertarians, the Alaska Independence Party, and basically everyone but Republicans.

In what is not a reversal of the usual pattern, Galvin leads Shein by 30 points.

Aha, from a Slate interview with Jeffrey Toobin, a prosecutor on Iran-Contra:

”...congressional committees gave immunity to Oliver North in order to get him to testify. We prosecuted him anyway, and his conviction was thrown out because the appeals court said we had used his immunized testimony against him. When you get immunity, the deal is that your testimony can’t be used against you. The legacy of Iran-Contra is that Congress never gives immunity to anyone who might subsequently be prosecuted.

What’s happened now is that Cohen has been prosecuted. There will be no further prosecution of him. So a Democratic Congress would be free to give him immunity and force him to testify without jeopardizing any criminal prosecutions, because it has already been done.”

Verizon throttled firefighters’ data plan during California wildfire

A Northern California fire chief said efforts to battle the largest wildfire in the state’s history were hampered by Verizon Communications Inc., which throttled the fire department’s mobile-data plan to the point that it made communications impossible.

“County Fire has experienced throttling by its ISP, Verizon,” Santa Clara County Fire Chief Anthony Bowden wrote in a court filing first reported by Ars Technica on Tuesday. “This throttling has had a significant impact on our ability to provide emergency services. Verizon imposed these limitations despite being informed that throttling was actively impeding County Fire’s ability to provide crisis-response and essential emergency services.”

The court document was filed as an addendum to a lawsuit filed by 22 state attorneys general seeking to reinstate federal net neutrality rules.

According to the filing, the fire department’s mobile-data plan was severely throttled after it surpassed its monthly data allowance while fighting the massive Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco. “Data rates had been reduced to 1/200, or less, than the previous speeds,” Bowden wrote. That impeded their efforts to communicate so much that firefighters were forced to use other departments’ ISPs, or their own personal mobile devices, he said.

When the department complained, “Verizon representatives confirmed the throttling, but rather than restoring us to an essential data transfer speed, they indicated that County Fire would have to switch to a new data plan at more than twice the cost, and they would only remove throttling after we contacted the department that handles billing and switched to the new data plan,” Bowden wrote.

Australia can be as atavistic as the US about certain things (e.g., climate change prevention), but at least they are ahead of us in dumping old beliefs:

A poll carried out for 32 years finds Australian biology students are abandoning the idea of divine involvement in human origins

A new study just published in Evolution: Education and Outreach suggests that contemporary Australian university students give far more credit than the previous generation to the science of human evolution and far less credit to creationism or divine guidance.

In a picture:

Image: Figure-1.-The-results-of-the-survey-and-the-results-of-the-Australian-na…-768x937.png

Interesting that the percentage declaring “none” on the census is still far less than those declaring a belief in a totally naturalistic evolution for humans. However, the latter is a sampling of biology students, and maybe this is telling us that religious people are less likely to study biology?

Anyway, the research paper:

Thirty two years of continuous assessment reveal first year university biology students in Australia are rapidly abandoning beliefs in theistic involvement in human origins

The results have demonstrated a downward shift over time from 60% of the class in 1986 believing a god had something to do with the origin of humans, to 29% in 2017. Conversely, the percentage of students convinced that a god had nothing to do with the origin of humans rose from 25% in 1986 to 62% in 2017. The creationist belief that a god created the world de novo within the last 10,000 years declined from 10% in 1986 to 3.6% in 2017. The decline in the Australian students’ commitment to religious views about divine creation, especially creationism, considerably exceeded the corresponding beliefs among American students and their general public, where belief in creationism while slowly declining appears to have remained in the 40% range, four times that seen in our Australian survey.

Three men charged with having sex with 12 animals

Three men are accused of having sex with at least 12 animals in Munson, Pennsylvania several times a week over the past four to five years.

Matthew Brubaker, 31, Terry Wallace, 41, and Marc Measnikoff, 34, are accused of having sexual relations with at least 9 female horses, a cow, a goat, and several dogs. Police say this happened on their property on Mouse Lane.

A teenage boy, also living on the property, was reportedly forced to assist the men with restraining the animals while they engaged in their acts.

The Clearfield County SPCA was at the property to care for the animals.

Charges are pending against all three men for felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and corruption of a minor. They are also facing misdemeanors including 1,460 counts of sexual intercourse with an animal, and 1,460 counts of cruelty to animals.

Social networks to be fined for hosting terrorist content
21 Aug 2018 by Lisa Vaas

The European Commission is done with waiting for social platforms to voluntarily fix the problem of extremist content spreading via their technologies. On Sunday, the Financial Times reported that the EC’s going to follow through on threats to fine companies like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for not deleting flagged content post-haste.

The commission is still drawing up the details, but a senior EU official told the FT that the final form of the legislation will likely impose a limit of one hour for platforms to delete material flagged as terrorist content by police and law enforcement bodies.

I see in this unlimited new opportunities for censorship, extortion, etc to flourish.

Hannity opens his show dismissing Manafort and Cohen news: “It has nothing to do with Russia.”

yes, the specific crimes and convictions dont.
here’s just one explanation of why you are so, so wrong and why “it does have to do with russia”: leverage

ie from wapo:

Manafort’s brief tenure as the head of Trump’s campaign overlapped with concerns about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, he’s got high-level connections to Russia in his own right, and he’s a key link to the president as one of the highest-ranking Trump campaign officials ensnared in the investigation.

The more legal pressure there is on Manafort, the more pressure he’ll face from Mueller to sign a plea deal. Any plea deal would probably offer Manafort a reduced jail sentence in exchange for sharing what he knows about Trump and Russia connections.

Trump aides try to keep him distracted….

Infamous for his mercurial temperament, Trump is likely to explode at any moment with a barrage of angry and possibly self-incriminating tweets. As his aides whisper nervously about the possibility of his future impeachment, they’re doing their best to keep the volcanic President distracted, according to a Tuesday Politico report.

Many staffers told Politico that Tuesday was the “one of the darkest days” for Trump’s presidency, and fretted that the legal peril so many Trump associates have found themselves in could lend credence to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, just by nature of the taint of criminality smearing the White House.

Some are reportedly worried that all of the scandal will add fire to the Democrats’ desire to impeach him, adding that Tuesday’s turmoil only makes it more important for Republicans to hold the House and protect the President.

As one former White House aide phrased it to Politico, now staffers are just working to “minimize the amount of self harm” Trump could do to himself in his rage. The plan is to keep Trump distracted with golf and rallies, to give him less time to stew.

“He’s almost like a volcano, which sometimes blows off steam without taking out the village below,” the former official added. “The busier he is, the less likely he’s going to get in these moods and watch TV and get more and more angry.”

I wonder who’s jangling the keys today? Vanky, maybe?

It tweets:

Trump had a delay this morning in tweeting, and now he’s off to the races. Tweeting about how Cohen is such a bad lawyer (Trump hired only the best people. The best!)

Trump knows the walls are closing in and he’s now going to lash out and claim that Manafort was railroaded and that he’s a brave man? He’s a convicted felon.

It’s also signaling that Trump might pardon since that’s the kind of language he used around Dinesh de felon and Joe Arpaio before he pardoned those two fuckers.

Pardoning Manafort isn’t the win Trump thinks it would be. It opens up the door to even more trouble, since Manafort could then be compelled to testify and there’s no 5A assertions on the crimes for which he was pardoned. Manafort could then spill the beans on Trump and what he knows - which isn’t covered by the 5A unless he’s incriminating himself in still more crimes in conjunction with the complicit Trump.

It’s crimes all the way down in Trumpworld.

So of course Fox will spin this as though the FBI is somehow conspiring with the DOJ (yeah, this was an actual thing last night):

Here’s a real flashback for you - that David Broder quote about how Clinton ‘wrecked the place’ sent me on a search, and I found this Sally Quinn op-ed about how the entire DC establishment had a big sad because Clinton lied…

But this particular community happens to be in the nation’s capital. And the people in it are the so-called Beltway Insiders — the high-level members of Congress, policymakers, lawyers, military brass, diplomats and journalists who have a proprietary interest in Washington and identify with it.

They call the capital city their “town.”

And their town has been turned upside down.

With some exceptions, the Washington Establishment is outraged by the president’s behavior in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The polls show that a majority of Americans do not share that outrage. Around the nation, people are disgusted but want to move on; in Washington, despite Clinton’s gains with the budget and the Mideast peace talks, people want some formal acknowledgment that the president’s behavior has been unacceptable. They want this, they say, not just for the sake of the community, but for the sake of the country and the presidency as well.

In addition to the polls and surveys, this disconnect between the Washington Establishment and the rest of the country is evident on TV and radio talk shows and in interviews and conversations with more than 100 Washingtonians for this article. The din about the scandal has subsided in the news as politicians and journalists fan out across the country before tomorrow’s elections. But in Washington, interest remains high. The reasons are varied, and they intertwine.

I wonder where those who are still alive stand on Trump’s behavior?

The juxtaposition of the Cohen and Manafort tweets is as expected.

I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family. “Justice” took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to “break” - make up stories in order to get a “deal.” Such respect for a brave man!

paraphrasing a comment from over at dkos:

Trump feels badly that Manafort didnt pay his taxes and therefore ripped off the us govt for decades

nfl players are “Sons of Bitches”.

tax money goes to police, the VA, and military spending

those kneeling football players pay their taxes, Manafort didn’t

Well, apparently, the accused worked at a farm owned by the candidate’s family.

For four-and-a-half years, reportedly. Of course, this will make little/no difference to the hardcore Build-The-Wall types (and their RW media enablers) who are likely to buy into the depiction of Rivera as some “animal” who snuck across the border last week with the sole intention of murdering some white girl (and/or going on welfare).

That this poor schmuck (whom nobody, RWNJ griping notwithstanding, seems to be “defending”) is far more typical of the undocumented worker- except for the violent-murder part, of course - is going to be a distinction lost on the Trumpalistas; even if the Mollie Tibbets case were the only one of its kind all year, that it is going to be thoroughly exploited by this Administration in pursuance of its xenophobic agenda is (disgracefully) a given.

Lloyd wrote that Roe v. Democrats need to uniformly tell the Senate GOP to stick it and end consideration of Trump nominations for the federal bench on grounds that Trump is currently an unindicted co-conspirator in multiple felonies, and it’s a matter of time before he’s indicted.

and they must hammer home not just multiple run-of-the-mill felonies, but an actual criminal conspiracy intended to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

he cannot profit from his crimes by using power and authority he got only by stealing them

Not for a Senate Minority: IIRC, Mitch McConnell used his leverage as Majority Leader to keep Merrick Garland’s nomination from even coming up in the Senate, but that was different.

re: #253 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

To me, “plead” is the same as “read”. “Read a book!” “I read a book.” Pronounced differently, spelled the same. “I pleaded guilty” sounds like “I readed a book”. To me, anyway.

English teacher has to dig deeper. Read is from Old English>Middle High German>Sanskrit, while plead derives from French, according to Merriam-Webster. So they would be conjugated differently.

But there’s this:

Pleaded vs. Pled

Plead belongs to the same class of verbs as bleed, lead, and feed, and like them it has a past and past participle with a short vowel spelled pled (or sometimes plead, which is pronounced alike). From the beginning, pled has faced competition from the regular form pleaded, which eventually came to predominate in mainstream British English. Pled was and is used in Scottish English, which is likely how it came to American English. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pled was attacked by many American usage commentators (perhaps because it was not in good British use). Though still sometimes criticized, it is fully respectable today and both pled (or plead) and pleaded are in good use in the U.S. In legal use (such as “pleaded guilty,” “pled guilty”), both forms are standard, though pleaded is used with greater frequency. In nonlegal use (such as “pleaded for help”), pleaded appears more commonly, though pled is also considered standard.

Well, we’ll insist the suspect be put on trial and if convicted be locked away from the general public for a long time. What we won’t do is take completely unrelated people and throw them and their children in cells. This isn’t a tough concept. If a person who has parking tickets kills someone, we don’t reevaluate our punishment for minor traffic offenses because “if we threw everyone in jail who got parking tickets then this victim would still be alive.”

Every question needs to be about Trump being an unindicted coconspirator to Cohen.

Every question that isn’t about that needs to be about Trump’s 30 year relationship with Manafort and how and why he picked Manafort as campaign honcho. Why did Trump ignore all the red flags?

Every question that isn’t about the above needs to be about why Trump continues to act above the law and pursue policies that favor Russia.

Oh… am I going too far?

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A Ku Klux Klan member from Maryland who pleaded no contest to firing a gun at a white nationalist rally last summer in Virginia has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Charlottesville Circuit Court records show Richard Preston was sentenced Tuesday to eight years, with four of those years suspended.

Prosecutors said Preston fired a handgun once toward the ground while standing on a sidewalk crowded with rally-goers and counterprotesters after initially pointing the gun at a black man with an improvised flamethrower. No one was struck.

His charge, discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet (300 meters) of a school, carried a penalty of between two and 10 years in prison.

Preston has spoken out publicly as an imperial wizard of the KKK.

We have a president who has revitalized the economy, cut taxes and given businesses a huge boost, making excellent trade deals, has Korea talking and reunited Korean families, brought back our soldiers remains which no one for 60 years has been able to do. Appointed the first African American female marine general. Has black unemployment at the lowest level in history. Thats just a tiny surface of the good things he has done in less than 2 years. There have been more human trafficking arrests since hes been president then with the last several presidents combined. He has not been a perfect person in his life but he is not a monster, he is not stupid and he wants to clean up Washington. And thats why they hate him. Cohen is doing what he has to do to save himself from a long prison sentence for his own crimes but he had to give them something that maybe they could get Trump for. Some sort of campaign finance problem. Did you know that Obama paid one of the biggest fines in history for a campaign finance violation? Probably not since CNN didn’t care about it and didn’t mention it. And what happened to the “russian colusion” That is what Mueller was hired to find but he can’t so hes desperately looking for something. Trump stole their power and they are determined to destroy him. I try to stay out of this crap because it is just that…..crap. (Note: She never stays out of it.) re: #348 plansbandc

This is what my former friend has to say about Trump. We really do live in completely different realities:

(Note: She never stays out of it.) Brought on by a media that is complicit in the Washington DC corruption and has much to hide themselves. What disturbs me is the lack of information many people have. Think what you want and I will remove this after awhile because its a waste of time to try to tell the CNN devotees anything and I just don’t want to listen to nonsense anymore.

Sarah Huck Sanders could just print that out and read it at the briefing. That’s pretty much exactly what she’ll say.

It works. Kate Steinle’s family have tried to de-politicize her death but the GOP keep using her death as part of their anti-immigrant platform.

The thing is, the shooter was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter charges because the jury rightly saw that the shooting was an accident. The “illegal immigrant,” a homeless guy, found a rag under the bench he was sitting on and took a look. The rag was wrapped around a gun. As he unfolded it to see what was inside, the gun fired. The bullet hit the surface of the wharf and ricocheted sixty feet before hitting Kate, the tourist walking on the wharf. Even if for some reason he had meant to harm her, he would have had to be the greatest trick shot in history to pull this one off.

And yet the wingnuts still harp on this case as justification for persecuting immigrants.

Shocked face…..put it on:

star-telegram.com

Tuesday, the Star-Telegram reported that posts on social media — and requests sent directly to Tarrant County Republican Party Chairman Darl Easton — called for Dr. Shahid Shafi, a Southlake councilman, to be removed from the post of vice chairman of the local Republican Party.

Dr. Shafi is a practicing. Mosque-attending muslim who claims not to follow sharia law or know what it is,” Republican Sara Legvold wrote on the Protect Texas Facebook page in calling for Shafi’s removal. “As a practicing muslim that is an overt falsehood. Sharia law is anathema to our Constitution because Islam recognizes no other law but shariah.

“As the most conservative county in the nation, this is a demoralizing blow to the conservative rank and file of the Republican Party across the nation and in Texas.”

Ya know what? Dr. Shafi is on his own, he knew what party he was joining and what they stand for.

lol, local Dem fires back:

Democrat Shane Hardin wrote several posts about the story. Among them:

“I cannot believe it … racist tea party members in North Tarrant County,” he wrote. “The next thing ya know, someone is going to declare that it Texas is hot in August as well.”

re: #458 sagehen

And the person whose gun it was, the person who was careless enough to leave it wrapped in a rag under a bench… did he/she ever face any consequences?

That person is unknown. The gun was stolen from a BLM Ranger’s car, where he left it in a backpack on the front seat. Who stole it, and how many hands it passed through before being left on the bench is unknown.

Why would a Brexit crackpot tweet just like an American wingnut?

Found dead in his cell
I wonder if the White House will tweet about him.

If only to blame the suicide and sex assault on the illegal immigrant mother.

Wingnuts are a global phenomenon.

Yes, but a British wingnut should be Tweeting insane EDL type stuff, rather than focusing on the things that racist Americans are interested in.

Trump on the hush money payments: “They didn’t come out of the campaign. They came from me.” (via Fox)

1:50 PM - Aug 22, 2018

So, Trumpy is trying to excuse the payments by saying they didn’t come from the campaign…he made them.

I’ll let the legal people deal with all of that.

What I find interesting though is here is the President of the United States admitting he paid off a porn star to stay quiet about some sex on the side while his wife was pregnant.

Didn’t he say he never did any of this??? Now, he is saying he did to use it as an excuse to say it wasn’t illegal.

Keep talking fat ass. You are going to put yourself in deeper trying to cover this all up.

The American surge in wingnuttery has the attention of wingnuts all over. Hard to keep ‘em all focused.

He made them - and that’s why there’s a felony involved. It circumvented the campaign finance laws. That’s the entire fucking point.

He never reported that the money was going for a specific purpose to silence those that could spill their guts about what they did or didn’t do with Trump.

And then everyone around Trump lied about those payments and the relationships - furthering the conspiracy and criminal conduct in the process.

re: #468 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

This is now a trend for the GOP. Find some white person killed and pin it on a brown person. Jump up and down and scream about it. Say that this is the real story, the real crisis in America.

Millions of Fox-watching feardrones respond, as they have been conditioned to do.

I won’t look at my Facebook feed. Won’t. Do. It.

Exactly - “illegal immigrant murder” * is now the go-to subject when the White House wants to deflect or change the subject from any/all criticism. Charming.

*however rare: like I opined upthread, if Mollie Tibbetts’ killing was the only one done by an undocumented immigrant in the whole country all year, it’s likely the Administration would still make it a centerpiece for their xenophobic bigotry.
