In Which Donald Trump Confesses to a Criminal Conspiracy on Fox News

Politics • Views: 36,688

This is the kind of stuff that gives Donald Trump’s attorneys migraine headaches, as he admits openly that he conspired with Michael Cohen to conceal hush money payments during his presidential campaign to the women he was sleeping with.

Remember that Trump originally denied knowing anything at all about these payments.

But to the point of his current lies, the fact that he made the payments himself and they didn’t go through his campaign is the crime. The payments should have been disclosed on his FEC forms, but instead Trump and Cohen conspired to hide them, and cooked up a phony invoice scheme to reimburse Cohen.

But I’m sure Robert Mueller appreciates it when Trump goes on Fox News and stupidly admits to criminal behavior.

Not a crime, not illegal. Obama had campaign finance problem big money. Big lib Lawyer Alan Dershowitz says agrees I’m being framed by very bad people. WhataboutHillary? Emails many people say crime.

Trumpworld’s last remaining way to avoid prison right now is that the DOJ has a policy in place that indicates they should not indict a sitting president because it would undermine the capacity of the Office of the Executive.

The thing is - Trump is undermining the Office of the Executive through his very presence, and his being in that position is due to the crimes for which Trump has already admitted to doing.

Trump admits he broke federal campaign finance laws by hiding the payments, hiding the nature of the payments, and then lying about everything relating to the payments ever since.

Trump admits to lying about the June 2016 meeting with the Russian foreign agents, implicating everyone around him in his inner circle. Everyone in that meeting was engaging in criminal malfeasance and then Trump and his inner circle conspired to keep it secret.

All they have done since is lie, obfuscate, bully, and project like IMAX - Hillary did it first, and that’s a crime, but when I did it it wasn’t a crime.

Yeah, it’s crimes all the way down.

We’re also watching the spinoffs back to state law too start to come into play as the federal crimes have state analogues, so even if Trump moves to pardon his cronies, they’ll still be open to prosecution in the states.

Cohen’s allocution to multiple federal felonies as part of his plea deal shows how much trouble Trump is in on just that one aspect of his corrupt admin.

It’s time for the DOJ to revisit this policy - that when the crimes themselves go to how a person got to occupy the office in the first place, the general rule does not apply.

That Iowa lawyer’s comment, as related by the DMR, is sort of ambiguous: it doesn’t make it clear whether he is “sad and sorry” for Trump having weighed in, or whether Trump is “sad and sorry” for having done so.

However, it works either way…

I guess they’re considered a campaign expense, a payment to further the ends of the campaign? Can one of the lawyers here weigh in?

Because it was an expenditure made on behalf of the campaign. The whole point of the hush money payment was to protect Trump’s election chances; that makes it a campaign expenditure.

re: #5 Belafon

The campaign finance law requires that you must report campaign contributions in a timely fashion. You must report if the funds are being used to influence a campaign. Here, Trump made significant payments to McDougal and Daniels for the purpose of influencing the 2016 election outcome but never reported them.

Trump now claims that he personally made the payment, which doesn’t solve his problem - the crime was failing to report the payment in the first place.

Inadvertent errors are not the same as purposefully refusing to report. Obama being late to report within days isn’t the same as Trump being caught lying on his FEC filings (the lie being the omission of these payments).

Yep, it was a self made Catch 22 trap. He wanted to keep something secret to help the campaign which couldn’t legally be kept secret forever because it was 100% designed to help the campaign. Technically the campaign did not need to write the check to Stormy Daniels but Trump would have needed to declare the payment as a contribution to the FEC, which he deliberately didn’t do.

And it all unraveled because Trump refused to even sign the NDA, thinking that would further insulate him via plausible deniability. Instead it gave Daniel’s the grounds to challenge the NDA as void ab initio, which led to the discovery of Cohen’s correspondence, which led to the story blowing up, which led to Cohen declaring that he did this on his own with no input from Trump, which led to the SDNY search warrant on Cohen’s home and offices because it then looked like an illegal campaign contribution from Cohen, which inexplicably led to Team Trump releasing the taped conversation proving Trump did know about the Karen McDougal / AMI deal and was trying to buy the rights to her story, which led to where we are now with Cohen confessing that Trump ordered everything.

If Mr. Cohen has this great dirt, why hasn’t Mr. Mueller already locked him in with a cooperation agreement? Mr. Mueller is a cautious man; Mr. Cohen, manifestly, is not. If the special counsel enlisted Mr. Cohen formally, that agreement would come with all of his credibility problems and tendency to act impetuously. Now Mr. Cohen’s plea has thoroughly rattled the administration. Mr. Trump and his gaffe-prone lawyer Rudy Giuliani react badly to pressure and will likely respond with incriminating statements. And Mr. Mueller will no doubt be watching. This is what federal prosecutors do best: provoke foolish reactions.

That’s a dumb policy. If a president commits a crime, he/she should be indicted and tried like any other citizen. Otherwise, you will end up with a criminal running the country. Democrats need to work on this issue and change DOJ’s policy.

Trumpworld’s last remaining way to avoid prison right now is that the DOJ has a policy in place that indicates they should not indict a sitting president because it would undermine the capacity of the Office of the Executive.

It’s time for the DOJ to revisit this policy - that when the crimes themselves go to how a person got to occupy the office in the first place, the general rule does not apply.

re: #53 goddamnedfrank

Yep, it was a self made Catch 22 trap. He wanted to keep something secret to help the campaign which couldn’t legally be kept secret forever because it was 100% designed to help the campaign. Technically the campaign did not need to write the check to Stormy Daniels but Trump would have needed to declare the payment as a contribution to the FEC, which he deliberately didn’t do.

And it all unraveled because Trump refused to even sign the NDA, thinking that would further insulate him via plausible deniability. Instead it gave Daniel’s the grounds to challenge the NDA as void ab initio, which led to the discovery of Cohen’s correspondence, which led to the story blowing up, which led to Cohen declaring that he did this on his own with no input from Trump, which led to the SDNY search warrant on Cohen’s home and offices because it then looked like an illegal campaign contribution from Cohen, which inexplicably led to Team Trump releasing the taped conversation proving Trump did know about the Karen McDougal / AMI deal and was trying to buy the rights to her story, which led to where we are now with Cohen confessing that Trump ordered everything.

well summarized

Also, how is this even possible?

The Hunters allegedly “overdrew their bank account more than 1,100 times in a seven-year period,” resulting in $37,761 in fees for overdrafts and non-sufficient funds.

And this is the genius who pontificated:

“America can no longer afford to borrow and spend its way to prosperity” and that “Washington doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem. “

washingtonpost.com

If that had been you or me, we wouldn’t have ever gotten to that point, because the banks would have closed our accounts and blacklisted us from having an account with any other bank that uses that list (which is many of the large ones).

There was some big science news today. Now, with Trump Trauma gripping our news-cycle it is hard to pay attention to other headlines, but here it is:

Mum’s a Neanderthal, Dad’s a Denisovan: First discovery of an ancient-human hybrid

A female who died around 90,000 years ago was half Neanderthal and half Denisovan, according to genome analysis of a bone discovered in a Siberian cave. This is the first time scientists have identified an ancient individual whose parents belonged to distinct human groups. The findings were published on 22 August in Nature1.

The research: The genome of the offspring of a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father

You know, it strikes me only now how the seemingly inconsequential decision not to release his tax returns was actually a critical play in Trump’s campaign. If he released his tax returns, the IRS would have been hauling him off to arraignment the following morning. He knew it; there’s no way he didn’t know it. And we are just now finding out just how deep that particular rabbit hole goes. It bought him nearly two years of obscurity, but in the end, Donald J. Trump will go down in history alongside Al Capone as career criminals who were undone by the tax man.

It’s a false belief, that different species cannot interbreed.

Well, what it is, is that Nature doesn’t provide life in the hard-and-fast categories that people insist on. I used to argue Evolution with a friend I’d describe as a Sophist. He was a smart guy, widely read, but absolutely committed to Creationism.

When I described how Homo erectus (IIRC) skulls gradually enlarge from the earliest with chimp-sized brain cases to the last with brain cases a the very low end or Homo sapiens range, he insisted that, if I were correct, then at some point two parents who were NOT HUMAN gave birth to a HUMAN child. And he insisted I identify that point.

He could only see it as discrete categories. Something either IS human or it’s NOT.

“…the way that Cohen reported the $50,000 expense to the Trump Organization in January 2017 suggests the money may not have been paid out through traditional financial channels.

According to prosecutors, Cohen presented Trump executives with bank records for several of the expenses he incurred on Trump’s behalf. But for his $50,000 payment to a tech company, Cohen provided no paperwork, just a handwritten sum at the top of one of the other bank documents.

The Trump Organization would later say that the $50,000 was a “payment for tech services.” However, prosecutors say the $50,000 “was in fact related to work Cohen had solicited from a technology company during and in connection with the campaign.”

Hickam says he had nothing to do with her losing the internship:

“This, I had nothing to do with, nor could I since I do not hire and fire at the agency or have any say on employment whatsoever,” Hickam wrote.

He explained that it was due to the #NASA hashtag that Naomi’s “friends used that called the agency’s attention to it” long after his own comments had been deleted.

Hickam said Naomi reached out to him with an “unnecessary apology, which I heartily accepted and returned with my own.”

“After talking to her and looking at her resume, I am certain she deserves a position in the aerospace industry and I’m doing all I can to secure her one that will be better than she lost,” he said.

Something they can sell to the squishy middle in their states who will decide that approving the nominee of an admitted felon is acceptable if certain “criteria” are met.

Not including the Kavanaugh pick, the next president (or more accurately, whoever wins the 2020 election) will likely have 2-3 picks. Ginsburg is 85, Breyer is 80, Thomas is 70. Roberts is 63, but has a history with seizures. If/when Ginsburg, Breyer, and Thomas step away, that’s when you can start talking about the balance of the Court being defined for a generation.

Ayeah, the union is offering $500 (a pittance compared to what they likely rake in annually) for anybody stupid enough to help their members beat an “excessive use of force” rap.

Randi Rhodes suggested that Democrats expand the Supreme Court and pack the it with progressive justices. Not sure if that could be done but if the Senate flips (small chance of that happening), Democrats can’t act as if it’s business as usual. Republicans stole the seat now occupied by Gorsuch and given the illegitimacy of the Trump presidency, if you can’t kick Gorsuch out, expanding the number of SCOTUS justices may be an option.

That’s demented, a complete reversal of traditional police policy. Most departments do not want civilians to involve themselves in an apprehension. If bystanders stop a fleeing suspect or wrestle down a shooter (as happened outside the White House some years ago), fine. But encouraging amateur intervention is an invitation to all kinds of trouble. Note that a legislator has introduced modifications to the “Good Samaritan” law to permit this, meaning that it is legally questionable now.

Would that $500 bounty make that person a de facto employee of the Police Union? Maybe make them potentially liable for a lawsuit.

I was involved in one of these violent bystander incidents when I was a deputy sheriff in the 70s. A low life had gotten past a secure door in a retirement community and assaulted his girlfriend, who was employed there. I threw him down and was trying to cuff him when a friend of the girlfriend ran up and kicked him in the face, breaking his nose and splattering blood on the floor. The suspect later swore up and down that I had kicked him while he was down and cuffed. Fortunately there were plenty of witnesses and the friend freely admitted kicking the guy (she was “trying to help”) so I was off the hook. What if the vigilante had disappeared and nobody else had been around?

Discotute is whining about this letter published Sunday in Current Biology:

Creationism and conspiracism share a common teleological bias

Note: the above link causes both Chrome and Opera to hang. YMMV. I had to access the paper through alternative means.

Anyway:

Teleological thinking — the attribution of purpose and a final cause to natural events and entities — has long been identified as a cognitive hindrance to the acceptance of evolution, yet its association to beliefs other than creationism has not been investigated.

Here, we show that conspiracism — the proneness to explain socio-historical events in terms of secret and malevolent conspiracies — is also associated to a teleological bias. Across three correlational studies
(N > 2000), we found robust evidence of a teleological link between conspiracism and creationism, which was partly
independent from religion, politics, age, education, agency detection, analytical thinking and perception of randomness.

As a resilient ‘default’ component of early cognition, teleological thinking is thus associated with creationist as well as conspiracist beliefs, which both entail the distant and hidden involvement of a purposeful and fi nal cause to explain complex worldly events.

[…]

None of this will come as a surprise to those of us long dealing with creationists and the religious right.

Yet it is good to see a science journal throwing some light on the problem.

The IRS may not know, probably often does not know, what any line item may really means on a tax return.

For example, Trump could have on his return the cost of legal counsel, listing Cohen’s fees. If there is a receipt from Cohen then the IRS will be fine with that.

However, the IRS will not know that the payments to Cohen were to reimburse Cohen paying off women.

Etc.

re: #328 freetoken

The IRS may not know, probably often does not know, what any line item may really means on a tax return.

For example, Trump could have on his return the cost of legal counsel, listing Cohen’s fees. If there is a receipt from Cohen then the IRS will be fine with that.

However, the IRS will not know that the payments to Cohen were to reimburse Cohen paying off women.

Etc.

absolutely
though thats what audits are for
and him releasing his returns wouldnt (necessarily) reveal that either

the original comment was a different dynamic — if he made his returns public

so yeah, crowd sourcing would have torn them apart and raised all kinds of questions
most probably legitimate ones, because as the public we’re not constrained the way the irs is

but that doenst mean the irs reads the blogs and watches the news and wakes up one day and just indicts him, and not in less than a years time

they still have procedures and standards and channels and have to build the same investigation as if he never released them to the public. and none of that information, process or progress would be public information as it was happening

Interestingly, Comey and the FBI basically said HRC didn’t deserve to be subject to criminal penalties because NOBODY FUCKING GETS LOCKED UP FOR THIS SHIT.

Now that Donny’s buddies are getting locked up for real for real crimes the LOCK HER UP media suddenly thinks this is all just too out of proportion, th at such activities as have been charged are not really after all crimes and should be settled with a fine, etc.

I’m the Production Mentor for a classical music festival, have been for over twenty years. It’s an orchestra boot camp. Four symphonic shows plus chamber music on other nights. 16 concerts in 14 days.

I love to see kids get into the arts. But if you want to be a classical musician as a career, don’t choose a popular instrument. Winds? Learn the bassoon. Strings? Viola or double bass. Horns? Trombone.
