ICYMI, now the government is going after Palestinian refugees.

washingtonpost.com

The Trump administration has decided to cancel all U.S. funding of the United Nations aid program for Palestinian refugees, part of its determination to put its money where its policy is as it seeks a recalculation of U.S. foreign aid spending and prepares its own Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

In an announcement to be made within the next several weeks, the administration plans to voice its disapproval of the way the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, spends the funds and to call for a sharp reduction in the number of Palestinians recognized as refugees, dropping it from more than 5 million, including descendants, to fewer than a tenth of that number, or those still alive from when the agency was created seven decades ago, according to officials familiar with the decision.

Any such reduction would effectively eliminate, for most Palestinians, the “right of return” to land contested with Israel. More immediately, many regional foreign policy and security experts, including in Israel, say that slashing UNRWA’s budget, amid a call to “de-register” refugees, would worsen an already disastrous humanitarian situation, especially in Gaza, and sharply increase the level of violence.

In addition to contributions to UNRWA, the United States has provided direct, bilateral assistance to the West Bank and Gaza. Last week, the State Department announced that more than $200 million in already appropriated aid for this year would be “redirected” elsewhere. The cuts in funding, along with shifts in policy, including recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, are part of a major reshaping of Middle East policy under President Trump.

Brasil is having a refugee crisis of its own, as venezolanos stream across the border. If you read through the story, you’ll find a couple of brasileiro Trumpers wishing for a closed border and a wall.

washingtonpost.com

Waves of newcomers are overwhelming Boa Vista, inundating hospitals and sparking a 1,000-percent increase in emergency calls to police. Schools are scrambling to put up bilingual signs for Spanish-speaking students reaching Portuguese-speaking Brazil. Thousands of migrants are living on the streets, willing to work for a third of the wages of Brazilians. Refugee camps have sprung up in the urban core, giving rise to fears of long-term ghettos.

Boa Vista residents “are losing their city to people of a new culture, people they don’t know,” said the mayor, Teresa Surita. “If this continues, we will lose total control of this city.”

Belafon  Aug 30, 2018 • 10:35:09pm

I see a number of people liked this. But here’s the flip side: stop ignoring all of the elections that have been won, and stop ignoring all of the people doing really hard work to try to win. It only makes it sound as if you think people are just sitting around waiting for the election. There are lots of people doing things for the election, such as Beto traveling all around Texas, the woman allowing his campaign to use her business office as campaign headquarters here in Rockwall, or other Democrats helping the people who defeated them in the primaries.

Shit man, this week:

- The John Mccain pettiness
- The kneecapping of Mcgahn by tweeting he’ll be leaving in the fall
- Denying passports to U.S. citizens
- Cancelling pay raises for Federal workers
- Cutting aid to Palestinian refugees

Trumps philosophy is simple: Fuck everyone but me.

Republicans stuffing the ballot box? Impossible so I am told.

17 registered voters in a single mobile home? New questions raised in East Anchorage legislative race.

Ringed by sunflowers and plywood, one Muldoon mobile home has earned a special distinction in Alaska voter registration records.

This single trailer is listed as the home of at least 17 registered Republican voters, based on applications submitted to the state earlier this year. At another nearby trailer in the same mobile park, absentee ballots were requested in the name of 14 more Republicans.

How so many voters — including some who show no record of recent dividend applications or other Alaska public records — can list a single home as their residence is now a central question in the puzzle over what happened in the Republican primary for House District 15.

Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux is leading in the Aug. 21 primary, with 452 votes to 339 for opponent Aaron Weaver, overcoming an election night deficit after officials counted more than 200 absentee votes earlier this week. But the Division of Elections identified ballot irregularities, saying 26 absentee ballots cast for LeDoux raised residency or legitimacy questions. Results are set to be certified on Saturday.

In this case, the Republicans were trying to knock off one of their own because she caucused with those nasty Democrats.

One major reason I did not stay on in Russia (lived and worked there in 1991-92) was the depressing sight of the old people there trying get by on pensions they had worked hard for all their lives and which had deflated to the equivalent of about $40 per month.

Younger people were able to adapt and find ways to get along, but I felt so sorry for these old folks, I used to buy garden-plot vegetables from grannies at the flea markets that sprung up at all the metro stations and leave my empty bottles out in the landing for them to return for deposit (by the time I went to get the next load, the first load would already be gone).

I prefer the latter…you don’t understand the indignity.

My dad was in a nursing home. One woman would beg me to take her home with me. It was the saddest thing. I would have lunch with my dad in their dining room and would listen to the same conversations taking place around me…4-5-6x in a single hour.

TBH I haven’t seen myself as a socialist in a long time but I don’t see myself necessarily as a capitalist either. I don’t believe that Marx’s observations exclude Smith’s or Vice versa. My problem is with a single track mind that thinks everything great is due to capitalism or that we can only fix modern problems with socialism. Life is too complex to put an ideological name tag on everything.

Looks like the EU is pondering doing away with switching between Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time.

More than 80 percent of EU citizens wanted to abolish the EU’s switch and favoured keeping the time used in summer for the whole year, Jean-Claude Juncker said on German television, adding he would put the plan to a debate among EU commissioners.

“We will decide that today,” Juncker said. “Millions … believe that summertime should be all the time.”

Any change would still need approval from national governments and European Parliament to become law.

Seems like they’d just to what Russia, Turkey and other countries have done and switch to year-round DST.

I am all for that, I grew up in Indiana and Arizona, two states that did not change their clocks. I do not know what I hate worse, the hour they steal from us in Springtime when we need it, or the one they give back in the fall, which we inevitably waste…

The Calumet Region also changed clocks to sync with Chicago.

And in Arizona, the Navajo Reservation, which extends into neighboring states, changes its clock.

But the Hopi Reservation, surrounded by Navajo territory, does not. So driving from Flagstaff, AZ to Gallup, MN could involve up to four time changes…

Greets and saluts from the no longer sweltering NYC metro area (we went from summer to mid-fall overnight, but have no fear, another heat wave is on tap for next week).

Trump’s lunatic economic policies are on full display here.

He touts a strong economy but then cites dire predictions to prevent federal workers from getting a scheduled raise. At same time, he’s touting his massive $1.5 trillion tax cut plan, which adds - $1.5 trillion in debt over 10 years.

The budget cost for the wage hike is a fraction of the $1.5 trillion, but there’s no way Trump’s going to roll back the tax scam. Nope. He’s doubling down by claiming that he can give COLA adjustments to allow even more capital gains to avoid taxation. That’s right folks, all while claiming he can’t give federal workers wage hikes (COLA), he’s claiming that he can give COLA adjustment to allow millionaires like himself an even bigger slice of the pie by adjusting the capital gains threshold without Congressional approval.

They’re actively sabotaging the functioning government when they’re not incompetently running it into the ground.

It’s not incompetence — it’s a deliberate policy to prove that government cannot do anything right which is why its functions need to be transferred to private institutions.

Trump is being very consistent. After all, he said in 2015 that American wages are too high. Of course, that doesn’t apply to the wealthy — there is no income level too high for them. He is contemptuous of working stiffs — and his base loves it.

And given how many potentially indictable Trump associates don’t work for the president or any politician right now, Miller argued, there would be no reason that Mueller couldn’t slap them with indictments close to the election.

If a US citizen asked me whether they should carry around their US passport, I can no longer in good faith tell them they don’t have to.

interesting questions wrt those people near the southern border being denied passports and being picked up and detained

it’s for lack of proof …going back to birth…. because they are changing the rules and requesting long lost and obscure documents, possibly no longer obtainable

so first - this sounds like a pretty good equal protection case - different proof standards for different people

second - these people are not the dreamers, who do in fact have a home country. let’s suppose these people are truly born in the usa americans. And they cant prove it to this new level of satisfaction. What country are they going to be deported to? and what would that country have to say about it?

Interesting, if IMO highly flawed, interpretation of Trump’s federal pay-raise announcement over at dKos . Basically, the diarist posits that Trump’s statements are a YUUUGE charade: that he’s going to come out and loudly freeze the wages, then let himself be “convinced” to reverse the policy by Congressional Republicans so as to make them “look better” for the midterm elections.

This theory has more holes in it than a wheel of Emmenthaler to me, but there we are….

Trump really has no feel for his position at this point. He still thinks in terms of butt saving and he doesn’t understand the majority of the country wants his butt gone.

I am always amazed at how little clue he has about himself. I guess supreme arrogance causes that. Well that and never reading actual media…he only goes for puffery and has no idea of the reality.

And even then he would deny it. He is just such a mess.

Trump made the remarks in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg. He deemed them off the record, and Bloomberg accepted his request not to reveal them.

But the Star is not bound by any promises Bloomberg made to Trump.

(snip)

White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said, “If this was said, it was said in an off the record capacity. I understand you guys have obtained it; I’m not sure where you’ve obtained it from.” She said she was looking into “the authenticity of what was said,” but she added that there are “sensitivities” to off-record comments, and she suggested the White House could “work with” the Star if we agreed not to publish.

The original steampunk:
Before Tom Swift or Johnny Quest, there was Frank Reade and, as the series aged, Frank Reade Jr.; the youthful protagonists of a lengthy series of boys adventure/invention novels authored by “Noname.” In fact, the series was started by Harry Enton in 1878 and most of them were written by Luis Senarens (1863-1939) over a period of almost 50 years.
The Reades spent a lot of time out west, taking on various outlaws and natural disasters with a series of self-invented miracle machines, such as the Flying Ironclad (an armored dirigible) and the Steam Man of the Prairies (a giant humanoid robot).

Trump is being very consistent. After all, he said in 2015 that American wages are too high. Of course, that doesn’t apply to the wealthy — there is no income level too high for them. He is contemptuous of working stiffs — and his base loves it.

The heart of the GOP is a corrupt bargain with the Donor class. They give hundreds of millions to support the GOP, in return for which the GOP votes to borrow trillions to give them tax cuts. The culture wars are for getting the rubes to vote for this shit.

I predict that after Kavanaugh is confirmed, Roberts won’t reverse Roe on the very first go. They will just never see any burden on abortion rights that they consider “undue.” Then once abortion becomes virtually illegal across much of the country and Roe is effectively a dead letter, they will reverse it. This is one of the reasons Democrats should pack the Court the next time they have the power, to restore the balance the GOP took when they stole Garland’s seat.

You’re right. All too much along our history our immigration policy has been flat out racist and anti-Semitic. Waves of immigrants from Europe saw attacks and efforts to limit their immigration all while claiming we couldn’t accommodate the new arrivals. Then Eastern Europeans came, often with significant Jewish populations, and the same arguments were made.

Then we had the Nazis rise in Europe, and the anti Semites came out in force to try and limit immigration further, especially Jews trying to flee the Nazis. That anti Semitic policy continued until after WWII ended.

Later, the racist policies shifted to keep Asian and Latin Americans from immigrating.

So yeah, let’s not romanticize Ellis Island and our immigration policy.

That is the flip side of the story, but one thing I am nonetheless proud of is that America offered a new life and a chance to a lot of political and economic refugees. Of course, we preferred light-skinned Protestants but took an awful lot who were neither.

and hagiographies and fawning eulogies aside, John McCain did recognize one thing about American nationalism and patriotism; ours is not about the place you were born or lived in, it is about the ideals your nation stands for.

It is not about obedience but about conscience, it is not just about laws but also about morality.

A big part of the problem is that he’s got serious liabilities that have little to do with the issues:

- He is one of the least charismatic politicians in recent memory
- His goal is clearly to use the Senate as a springboard to bigger things (i.e., the White House), and Texans know it
- He is a shameless opportunist, as evidenced by his rejection, and then embrace, of Donald Trump
- Nearly all of his colleagues loathe him, such that they will not be motivated to go above and beyond to help him
- Like Trump, he’s very divisive, which means that most Texans’ opinions about him are hardened. Either they love him, or they can’t stand him—there aren’t many fence-sitters for him to win over

i check real clear politics because they do a running average all the polls
i figure it keeps some of the noise down

on 12/15/17 he was -58.1 + 37.1 for a net of -21 (rounding?)
-21 is the biggest gap i could find

right now they have him at -11.1 with a -53.9 disapproval
the -60 from abc/washpo is in there

538 has Trump’s approval at -13.6. Nate Silver weights the polls so that low quality polls like Rasmussen aren’t overweighted.

OK: serious question: how the hell tall IS Beto O’Rourke?
I know he likes to carefully manage to photo angles for his coverage (and/or pose next to short people), but in pix like this he looks to be about 7’6”…

There are pictures of him campaigning with Arian Foster who is 6’1” and they look close to the same height, Beto may be an inch or two taller.

Yeah, right.

Not surprising the Australian bishops (any Catholic bishops, really) would reject this stuff: the sanctity of the confessional is pretty fundamental to Church doctrine (and the law). I don’t know how influential the RCC is in Australia, but I know over here it would be career suicide (and a quick trip to a judicial reversal) for any prosecutor to, say, go after a priest over “confessional” issues.

who else remembers Romney’s stadium rally disaster?
Mitt Romney in Michigan: At Detroit’s Ford Field, empty seats steal thunder

DETROIT — Friday was supposed to be the moment for Mitt Romney’s triumphant return to his birthplace, when he would use the cavernous Ford Field to deliver a policy address that established him as the lone Republican capable of both fixing the economy and beating President Obama.

But the event served up fresh evidence for Romney critics who say he can’t rise to the occasion and rally important elements of the GOP around his candidacy.

The lunchtime speech was delivered from the 30-yard line before 1,200 suited-up business leaders in folding chairs, in a stadium that usually holds 65,000.

We know the biggest stadiums in Texas. They can seat 100,000 or more.

Take your pick: Kyle Field, Royal Memorial Stadium, AT&T, and then the Cotton Bowl comes in at 91,000.

So, if you aren’t picking one of those four, then you can’t find the biggest.

If you can’t fill it up, we know you couldn’t get 100,000 in Texas.

If you instead go for an indoor arena, you’d still have to start with AT&T since that seats 100,000 and is enclosed.

All the big Texas indoor arenas have capacity of around 20,000.

Feel like banging my head against the wall. If I did that every time I feel like it, though, I would be dumb enough to vote for Trump in 2020. The average Trumpster will hear “UN” and start spewing John Birch talking points: It’s run by Soros and the international Jewish cabal, except when it is bashing Israel, at which times it is run by gay socialist third world kleptocrats and lizard people.

Dory found a stick in the yard, and Mrs. FBW brought it in for her. Now they’re each claiming it as their own. This is the one she was debarking yesterday. This time, Rango had taken it from her and held it down with his ginormous paw, while Dory bounced around trying to get to it.

Oklahoma Republican Suggests Turning Kids Over to ICE If They Don’t Speak English

An Oklahoma Republican sparked controversy after he suggested turning over thousands of the state’s non-English speaking students to Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a way to save money.

Republican Rep. Mike Ritze, said Oklahoma could solve some of its money problems by identifying what his caucus believes are 82,000 non-English speaking students and sending them to ICE to determine whether they are citizens in an interview with local news station News9.

“Identify them and then turn them over to ICE to see if they truly are citizens — and do we really have to educate noncitizens?” Ritze asked.

The 1982 Supreme Court decision Plyler v. Doe prohibits states from denying education to undocumented immigrants.

He’ll do it at Joel Osteen’s church; and Joel will fill it for him.

It was sold to a publishing company in Texas. It was then bought off by The Dispatch from the new owner and shut down.

Some folks thought the whole thing was planned from the get go, but they let the paper live on for a few years before selling it to The Dispatch.

Rango’s approach, when Dory has a toy he wants, is to hover nearby, waiting for an opening. Then he grabs it, retreats to his bed or a section of the floor, and just puts a paw or his head on it and ignores her. She’ll bounce around him, sometimes barking, as he continues to ignore her, with kind of a “Go ahead at TRY to take it, Tiny” attitude.

No. It isn’t amazing.

It was entirely predictable given how Trump operated.

It was predictable given how Trump was conning everyone all the time, and the only ones who haven’t been conned are the FBI and intel community that has had their ears perked up from the get-go because everything Trump did re: foreign countries reeked.

Trump surrounded himself with compromised and complicit people.

Take Flynn (yeah, oldie but goodie). Trump wanted his input. Trump put him on transition team. Trump made him NSA, despite the FBI/DOJ directly warning that Flynn was compromised.

Instead of heeding DOJ/FBI, Trump fired Yates because she told him what he didn’t want to hear.

Trump wanted Flynn because he thought Flynn was a loyalist to him personally. That was, is, and will always be, the only thing Trump cares about - are you loyal to him.

Chemnitz Protests Show New Strength of Germany’s Far Right

Waving German flags, with some flashing Nazi salutes, the angry mob made its way through the streets, chasing after dark-skinned bystanders as police officers, vastly outnumbered, were too afraid to intervene.

A Syrian refugee and father of two, Anas al-Nahlawie, watched horrified from a friend’s fourth-floor balcony. They were hunting in packs for immigrants just like him, he said. “Like wolves.”

For a few perilous hours over two days this week, the mob owned the streets of Chemnitz, where anger exploded after word spread that an Iraqi and a Syrian asylum seeker were suspected in a knife attack that killed a German man early Sunday.

In the past nazi rioters were vastly outnumbered by counter-protesters. This time there 8000 people in the mob, in a city of 250,000, and the police folded.
