ICYMI, now the government is going after Palestinian refugees.
The Trump administration has decided to cancel all U.S. funding of the United Nations aid program for Palestinian refugees, part of its determination to put its money where its policy is as it seeks a recalculation of U.S. foreign aid spending and prepares its own Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.
In an announcement to be made within the next several weeks, the administration plans to voice its disapproval of the way the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, spends the funds and to call for a sharp reduction in the number of Palestinians recognized as refugees, dropping it from more than 5 million, including descendants, to fewer than a tenth of that number, or those still alive from when the agency was created seven decades ago, according to officials familiar with the decision.
Any such reduction would effectively eliminate, for most Palestinians, the “right of return” to land contested with Israel. More immediately, many regional foreign policy and security experts, including in Israel, say that slashing UNRWA’s budget, amid a call to “de-register” refugees, would worsen an already disastrous humanitarian situation, especially in Gaza, and sharply increase the level of violence.
In addition to contributions to UNRWA, the United States has provided direct, bilateral assistance to the West Bank and Gaza. Last week, the State Department announced that more than $200 million in already appropriated aid for this year would be “redirected” elsewhere. The cuts in funding, along with shifts in policy, including recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, are part of a major reshaping of Middle East policy under President Trump.

One major reason I did not stay on in Russia (lived and worked there in 1991-92) was the depressing sight of the old people there trying get by on pensions they had worked hard for all their lives and which had deflated to the equivalent of about $40 per month.
Younger people were able to adapt and find ways to get along, but I felt so sorry for these old folks, I used to buy garden-plot vegetables from grannies at the flea markets that sprung up at all the metro stations and leave my empty bottles out in the landing for them to return for deposit (by the time I went to get the next load, the first load would already be gone).

My problem is with a single track mind that thinks everything great is due to capitalism or that we can only fix modern problems with socialism. For me, I’ve cherished finding my roots of entry to this nation. The earliest in Washington’s first term as President. The latest when a second great granddaughter of the above- my Nana was 9 years old- my other grandmother’s mother. Our nation has always been out of many, one. It’s beyond infuriating that the Know Nothing Party’s values are espoused by the President of the United States and by too many elected officials.

That is the flip side of the story, but one thing I am nonetheless proud of is that America offered a new life and a chance to a lot of political and economic refugees. Of course, we preferred light-skinned Protestants but took an awful lot who were neither.

Not surprising the Australian bishops (any Catholic bishops, really) would reject this stuff: the sanctity of the confessional is pretty fundamental to Church doctrine (and the law). I don’t know how influential the RCC is in Australia, but I know over here it would be career suicide (and a quick trip to a judicial reversal) for any prosecutor to, say, go after a priest over “confessional” issues.

It was sold to a publishing company in Texas. It was then bought off by The Dispatch from the new owner and shut down.

For my Brooklyn-born dad, half his school was Jewish kids from Yiddish-speaking homes, the other half were Catholic kids from Italian-speaking homes.
