New WP/ABC News Poll: Trump’s Disapproval Rating Hits a Dismal 60%, as 63% of Americans Support Mueller Investigation

Politics • Views: 37,584

Trump will start ranting about “fake news” again, but I feel like we should mark this day somehow — because this is the day Donald Trump’s disapproval rating hit a dismal 60%.

And that’s not the only bad news for President Babyfingers in this new Washington Post-ABC News poll. It also found that 49% of Americans think Congress should begin impeachment proceedings, and 63% support Robert Mueller’s investigation.

And in other news, a Paul Manafort associate who pleaded guilty to a lobbying crime admitted he helped foreign donors give money to Trump’s Inaugural Committee.

Oh, and regarding the 27-30 percent of nutjobs Trump never seems to lose no matter what, there’s a simple explanation:

They are racists and bigots and as long as Trump is President they believe they can get their hate on without serious consequences. They’ve always been dicks, but the legitimizing by Trump means they can now came right out in the open and drop ANY pretense of what they really are. They can attack brown people and the poor and whoever else doesn’t fit their “ideals” and know the President has their back.

And they love it.

So let me try to figure this out…

Liberals are the Nazis but for some reason Nazis always end up being right wingers supporting republican candidates. We’re the pro slavery side, but yet the people who are racist douchebags who carry confederate flags around always seem to love them some GOP candidates and whatever the fuck that stands for.

For this to make any sense, you’d have to have Richard Spencer and the Proud Boys etc throwing their support behind liberals, and yet that never happens. Why is that do you suppose? It’s quite a mystery ain’t it?

Stupid and Evil. Stevil.

since he’s had no actual successes and so many failures, the only card left to play is the appearance of success

I’ll say it again - there’s not enough mass on the “Don’t Shoot” side of the scale.

On the “Shoot” side, there’s the possibility of injury or death, for you or someone else. On the “Don’t Shoot” side? A couple weeks flying a desk, and maybe it’ll bother you down the road.

I’ll have to try that. Sounds like it would work well for Key Lime pie too.

As much as I’d like to, I can’t claim this one; there’s a company here in Nashville (Tennessee Cheesecake Co.) that makes their “standard” cheesecakes with that crust…and it’s damn tasty.

This will not be helpful.

And that’s entirely the point. They’re looking to completely screw things up everywhere they go, and this benefits no one but the one country not directly involved. Russia.

It’s same thing with the trade wars. Putin benefits from Trump’s trade war idiocy because everyone else is spinning wheels trying to stand still while Russia benefits from the divide and conquer.

Something policy wise had to change too. Multiple things more likely.
There’s something formal underpinning this.
We just fuckin shoot at any and everything.

As a society, we’re fucking idiots. Crime, especially violent crime, has been falling for years, but you wouldn’t know it to listen to people. Our cops kill people because we’ve convinced ourselves that we’re all only a hairsbreadth away from being gunned down, raped, beaten, etc. every hour of every day, everywhere we are.

We arm the police like they were soldiers on the battlefield, then we extol their heroism as they go off to the (checks notes) Fifteenth-most dangerous job in the US. We talk about them as if they’re under fire every damn day, as if every one of them is constantly in the crosshairs. And we let them shoot anyone who makes them feel nervous.

We don’t teach them to de-escalate, we don’t teach them how to work distance against people with knives, we call them to check on troubled people, and they shoot them because ‘he had a knife and wouldn’t drop it’.

OT: New Zealand Council Proposes Banning All Domestic Cats

A council in New Zealand’s South Island is proposing to ban all domestic cats as a means to protect native species of birds and mammals.

The Southland Regional Pest Management Plan calls for all domestic cats in the Omaui region to be registered, neutered and microchipped. When the animal passes away, residents will not be allowed to replace it.

John Collins of the Omaui Landcare Trust told Newshub: “We’re not cat haters, but we’d like to see responsible pet ownership and this really isn’t the place for cats.”

Only Bengal cats would be excluded from the plans, which are open for submissions until October.

The document states: “We propose to keep Bengal cats as an exclusion pest, as research suggests they have the potential to breed with the existing wild population of feral cats to create a more efficient predator.”

But resident Nico Jarvis told the Otago Daily Times she did not intend to comply with the plans, stating keeping her three cats was the only way to combat the “intense” rodent problem in the area.

“It doesn’t matter how many I trap and poison, more just coming in from the bush. They chew into your house, you can’t get rid of them. If I cannot have a cat, it becomes almost unhealthy for me to live in my house,” she said.

It’s not the first time the island’s feline population has found itself in the crosshairs. In 2013 prominent economist and environmentalist Gareth Morgan announced he wanted residents in his native New Zealand to neuter all pets and start turning strays over to be euthanised.

Has Donnie declared himself supreme ruler? Y/N
Has anyone been fired/quit in the Donnie regime? Y/N

re: #179 Bass Reeves

Cool thing happened to me today!

Went with a friend and her dog to a dog park neither of them had been to before. Within….5 minutes of showing up, all other 8 people grabbed their dogs and left.

Here’s the thing about being a black male in 2018. I can’t really tell if they (all white and over 40) left because *I* showed up, or because it’s the time they always leave. I would have to show up again tomorrow and see if my friend’s dog was a victim of poor timing or racism.

Geez. There’s something I’ve never had to think about. I imagine dealing with overt racism at least doesn’t lead to questioning yourself - “Am I being too sensitive?”

Mind you, as a Scientist, I immediately thought of different tests:
- Same time of day, different friend, different dog;
- Same time of day, different friend, same dog;
- Different time of day, same friend, same dog; etc.

The ironic thing is that majority of Pakistanis aren’t really THAT religious. Majority in the country often overlook basic tenets of Islam, which is cleanliness, patience, respect, and forgiveness, among others.

For how much love they love to brag about being a country that was allegedly founded in Islam (full disclosure, it wasn’t), they don’t bother to pay taxes, keep cities clean and orderly, adhere to their 5 daily prayers, donate to charity, and/or treat minorities with respect.

It’s more or less used as a fuel for an identity, nothing more.

The Prophet himself went through FAR worse than the likes of Wilders, so why give that troglodyte even more attention?

Okay, so we can’t take in refugees, so we separate them from their children to discourage them, without ever giving a thought to getting them back together, no matter how bad the situation they’re escaping is, because…brown?

But we’ll consider sending troops there and undoubtedly killing some people to accomplish…what? Again, because…brown?

Different time of day isn’t an issue, we stayed for an hour and an entirely different group showed up and had no visible issues. I haven’t ever been to a dog park before, but I do have a feel for dynamics, and the early group felt like regulars. When we drove up I literally felt a twinge, and wondered how many would leave. First one was gone before our dog was even in the enclosure.

An American visitor to Iran had similar stories to tell. He expected some animosity because he was American, but the opposite was true. Everyone seemed genuinely glad he was there. OTOH, since he was filming for PBS, the government assigned him a minder to monitor him.

This author suggests that throwing Uyghurs into re-education camps is only the beginning.

foreignaffairs.com

The roots of China’s denial of the unfolding human rights disaster in Xinjiang might be deeper still. The reeducation campaign has been a profound shock even to seasoned observers of Beijing’s policies in its restive western regions. From a broader perspective, however, it merely represents the logical culmination of Beijing’s wider strategy to reassert control over the spiritual-moral realm of society. The regime’s willingness to subject an entire ethnic group to inhumane indoctrination procedures simply reflects a consistent application of communist praxis to a people who stubbornly insist on maintaining their own ethnoreligious identity. But reeducation is not a specialized tool reserved for assimilating restive minorities. Any citizen is liable to some form of reeducation if he or she fails to align with a prescribed set of values and behaviors. In the nation in general, different reeducation practices could potentially be administered in tandem with the upcoming national social credit system, because the latter is ideally suited to evaluate and enforce state-sanctioned definitions of morality.

The cutest little first grader was in here selling chocolate covered almonds to raise money for a field trip that she doubted would ever happen. $2.00. I bought one. I asked her if she did her own hair or did her mother do it. She said her mother did it, but she can make braids too. I said, ‘But those French braids that go around your head so nice?’ And she described how her mother takes a little bit of hair at a time, and adds some more, and finishes with a hair tie. So articulate! I said she was lucky to have a mother who does her hair so nice, then the woman with her said she’s just the fun aunt, and I said that’s a great job. They had the girl’s little brother with glasses on too. (Kids with glasses at an early age always look smart to me. I didn’t get mine until third grade, so there’s no bias involved there. No sirree.)The girl handed the cash to her brother who handed it to the aunt. Yep, cash spent locally goes around town quickly.

I just ate ‘em all. I hope she gets a field trip.

Interesting talk today with a rock-ribbed Republican CPA who is appalled at what he is seeing now. The breaking point for him was Trump’s embarrassing statements in Helsinki.

Granted, this guy is your classic country club GOP type. But he can’t believe so many of his friends wholeheartedly support this idiot. He is willing to call them out - with some success. I just have to hope that if this is even marginally taking place in my area (Western NC - Mark Meadows territory), the thought is gaining broader sway in other parts of our country.

Interesante:

Republican attacks on unions are fiercer than ever, and likely to kick up another gear if Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court. But public approval for unions ticked up to 62 percent in 2018, according to Gallup, which has been polling the issue since 1936. Approval was 61 percent in 2017, after not having hit 60 percent since 2003.

Predictably, Democrats like unions and Republicans don’t, and support is lower in the South and West than the East and Midwest. But union support is high—65 percent—among young people aged 18 to 34, and other than Democrats, the group that likes unions the most is college graduates, with 70 percent support.

A plurality of the people polled, 39 percent, want unions to have more influence, while 26 want their influence to stay the same and 29 percent want it to shrink. Again, Republican policies and Republican judges’ opinions are in direct opposition to what Americans want.

The popularity of unions among younger people is a major bright spot, something to build on and to offer hope for the future.

All This And More Lyrics

(Brooker / Reid)

It’s not that I’m so cheerful, though I’ll always raise a smile
and if at times my nonsense rhymes then I’ll stand trial
My friends are all around me but they only breathe through fear
Were I to cry, I’m sure that still they’d never see a tear
In darkness through my being here, away from you
the bright light of your star confronts me shining through
Dull and sullen, much subdued, my skull a stony glaze
Whirlpools rage on constantly, I’m not so well these days
There must be something somewhere near who sees what’s being done
The harbour lights are burning bright, my wax is almost run
In darkness through my being here, away from you
the bright light of your star confronts me, shining through
Come Lollard, raise your lute and sing, and to my ears her beauty bring
like Maddox in the days of old we’ll feast and drink until we fold
And folding still we’ll spare a thought for what’s been lost and what’s been caught
and maybe then begin again for love is life, not poison
In darkness through my being here, away from you
the bright light of your star confronts me, shining through

Gotta get away

Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you
Look out
Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun ‘till you see the light
Oh, we will pray it’s all right
Gotta get away, get away
Between the velvet lies
There’s a truth that’s hard as steel, yeah
The vision never dies
Life’s a never ending wheel
Holy diver
You’re the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid
Jump, jump
Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he’s mean
Some light can never be seen, yeah
Holy diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what’s becoming of me
No, no
Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh, don’t you see what I mean
Gotta get away, get away
Gotta get away, get away, yeah
Holy diver, soul survivor
You’re the one who’s clean
Holy diver
Never come to knew, coming after you
Oh holy diver, yeah
Alright, get away, get away, get away
Holy diver
Holy diver
Oh holy diver, mmm

I went to the high school football game tonight to pick up my son from marching band and suddenly had these memories from the early 1980s. Then I saw a Buzzcocks video. I put them together in my mind and this popped out:

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (Official Video)

re: #351 teleskiguy

IHOP really screwed up with their recent marketing scam with the ‘p’ turning into a ‘b.’ Brian Eno *tweeted to them* the solution to their advertising boondoggle.

But now the joke (?)

“Where did the one-legged waitress work?”

“IHOP.”

won’t work and civilization will collapse.

Marching band. Oh, the memories! (It was back in the late 60s.)

East Pacific IR satellite:

It’s been a very active year in this part of the world. You can see the remnant low from Lane northwest of HI, pumping clouds into the jet heading for North America. East of HI is Miriam, slowly weakening, then hurricane Norman, still strong, and then tropical depression 17E which likely will strengthen overnight.

Not to be the “well, actually…” chick, but — he got away with it for a really long time. That’s I suppose a type of competence…

That was brought up in the replies. He maybe got away with it in part because people can’t imagine him doing it - the bias strikes again.

Was it not doing well financially, or did some rich guy just decide to shut it down with his pocket change?

It’s been doing poorly for years; their flush years were back in the days of classified ads.

Good memories, I assume? As you know I’m from the same area as you and marching band was deadly serious for my brother and sister. It wasn’t just games, but also competitions. My son’s school has a pretty good band department, but the marching band just services the games. No competitions. The focus is on ensembles and concert and jazz bands. But the gate to those for every student is marching band. Anyway, tonight was my son’s first game as a freshman. He had so much fun! This has been such a great entree into high school for him.
