Was just looking at TV schedule and noticed NBC Saturday Night Live is doing a repeat show from 2002 with John McCain as host and The White Stripes as music act tonight.

Decent of NBC to do this.

President Obama’s being realllly generous with that about McCain, sliding in to “little white lie” territory, but it’s a eulogy, so I’ll give him that.

President Obama is such a classy guy.

Yet, the Internet connections we Americans get (with less options and higher prices that comparable connections elsewhere in the industrialized world, and sorely lacking in rural/less-built up areas) are classified as “information services”, subject to minimal regulation, and net neutrality was killed stone dead by Trump’s FCC.

Ingraham and her ilk don’t want “fairness”, they want to grow their right-wing propaganda network to where no one can escape it.

Also, Citizens United. If the ultra-wealthy want unlimited dark money to drown out everyone else’s voices, the right wing is fine with that.

Also, media consolidation. If Fox, Clear Channel and Sinclair want unlimited airtime to push seriously lopsided opinionating, that’s the free market at work and liberals should stop whining they’re a bunch of snowflakes. Fairness Doctrine sucks.

But if one segment of communications technology doesn’t allow the right wing to vastly dominate, that’s just so unfair.

Shit we saw how they flipped out when people suggested returning the Fairness Doctrine. I just love seeing people who because they hated Obama so much and because they chose not to educate themselves reflexatively opposed Net Neturality and embraced Trump/Pai’s policy. And now they want the government to “protect” conservative voices on the internet from being “discriminated” against which is really code for they don’t want anyone to call them out on their shit. Man, I knew Ingraham and people like her were pathetic right wing children but this just takes it to another sad conclusion.

In fact, in some ways I despise Ivanka more than her father. Hear me out. It’s the fake smile. It’s the selling herself as the socially conscious Trump. The Trump bothered by detainment of children, ugly rhetoric, etc. All the while she clearly is using her father’s presidency to benefit her and her equally grotesque husband’s checkbook. I don’t have a problem with most presidents’ children. In fact, I thought that people were way too hard on the Bush girls for their underaged drinking incident but Ivanka clearly is using her father’s presidency to profit big time.

The right wing misuses the brand-name “conservative”, in ways that totally contradict actual meanings of words. It was legitimately conservative to oppose the creation of Medicare 50 years ago… but now we’re all used to it and conservatives don’t want anyone touching their medicare.

Another example:

Look at Iran. The people who overthrew the Shah in 1979 were radicals, revolutionaries. They had in mind a set of policies, laws, institutions that they wanted, all of which were radical and revolutionary.

They instituted those policies, laws and institutions, all of which are still how the country and its society is constituted. In many cases, it’s the exact same specific individuals maintaining the exact same policies, laws and institutions.

But it’s 40 years later; what was radical and revolutionary then is today the status quo. And the people who support those exact same policies, laws and institutions and want to maintain them are “conservatives”. Conservative cleric, conservative candidate, conservative leader…

The Real Reason Russia Is Rooting for Republicans in the Midterms
Julia Davis 08.31.18 4:45 AM ET

Excerpts:

One of the reasons McCain’s death was so deeply enjoyed by the pro-establishment Russians is that they don’t see a worthy replacement for the anti-Trump, anti-Putin elements anywhere within the Republican party. Karen Shakhnazarov, a prominent film director who is a regular on Russian state TV, summed up that perspective on the political opinion show 60 Minutes: “Global empires like the United States are destroyed from within… The U.S. is deteriorating. They won’t find other fighters like McCain. There won’t be any others like him. This process is irreversible.”

News on some of the private Helsinki talks, according to the Russians:

According to Russian politicians and experts, one of the agreements quietly reached by Putin and Trump in Helsinki included the establishment of a business council “to unite leaders of Russian and U.S. businesses.” Putin reportedly proposed a return to the format which was known in the past as the Presidential Commission or as the Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission—a group organized by the U.S. and Russian governments that encouraged mutual investments and joint business opportunities. The Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission was established in 1993 and operated until Boris Yeltsin, the former president of Russia, dismissed Viktor Chernomyrdin as prime minister in March 1998. The commission’s work was marred by the accusations of its ineffectiveness, the widespread corruption of Russian officials and the scandalous nature of the confidential 1995 accord, which exempted Russia from U.S. sanctions on arms deliveries to Iran, which were then covertly augmented by the Kremlin’s sales of missile and nuclear technologies. The Russians are now seeking to create similar initiatives.

“Putin clearly said that American businesses and Russian businesses will participate in joint development of major economical projects,” notes Vladimir Vasiliev, senior fellow at Moscow’s Institute of U.S. and Canadian Studies.

Holy shit.

re: #44 HappyWarrior

In fact, in some ways I despise Ivanka more than her father. Hear me out. It’s the fake smile. It’s the selling herself as the socially conscious Trump. The Trump bothered by detainment of children, ugly rhetoric, etc. All the while she clearly is using her father’s presidency to benefit her and her equally grotesque husband’s checkbook. I don’t have a problem with most presidents’ children. In fact, I thought that people were way too hard on the Bush girls for their underaged drinking incident but Ivanka clearly is using her father’s presidency to profit big time.

And trump’s children - excluding the youngest - are not children. Presidents’ children are not usually part of the administration. This lot have earned the right to be critized as has every other member of this administration - more properly called this maladministration.

Right. She chooses to be involved. This is different from Jenna/Barbara who weren’t involved in their father’s administration.

The essence of conservatism is attachment to the status quo; not a shock that wealth tilts to preservation of the as-is.

Our system is also more biased towards conservatives.

Trump Administration Muzzles Nuclear Weapons Safety Watchdog

The Trump administration, acting in an open partnership with the profit-making contractors that control the industrial sites where U.S. nuclear bombs are made and stored, has enacted new rules that limit the authority and reach of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, created by Congress in 1988 amid broad public concerns over civil and military nuclear safety lapses.

The administration’s new rules eliminate the board’s authority to oversee workplace protections for roughly 39,000 nuclear workers and also block its unfettered access to nearly three-quarters of the nuclear weapons-related sites that it can now inspect.

Again, the whole tripping point about this bullshit is that the Kremlin painting Donny as their stooge makes no fucking sense. And why go through such a convoluted mess of a plan to pass this information to the Clinton campaign when they could have simply sent one of their agents directly to the campaign itself? They certainly had no trouble doing so with the Trump campaign…

Judging by a terse googling, it appears the highlights of Chuck Woolery’s so-called life were his 1963 stint as a wine consultant in Columbus, Ohio, and that one time he was a sales rep for the Pillsbury Company. Obviously a formidable adversary.

Steele was originally engaged in Oppo Research by a Republican opponent (JEB!) against Drumpf. When JEB! dropped out, he told the DNC to look into it, that there was some raw meat there. The DNC paid Fusion to continue the research.

The foreign research and actions were taken by a third party, the former MI-6 head of the Russia desk. This is as far from collusion with actual Russians as is humanly possible.

Contrast this with an actual clandestine meeting with actual Russians in Trump tower to collect dirt on Hillary.

Even if no transfer of info took place (do we know this?) the fact that the campaign did not report the meeting is a de facto act of collusion. Dead bang.

Which tweet storm rehash will he give us? It depends on who gets his ear and some random combination of largely unpredictable factors that temporarily appeal to a sociopathic narcissist.

He very well could (after someone has planted it and shown him video) go after ‘the blacks’ again because of the shots at Aretha’s funeral, that latest polling, the NFL still existing and of course… Barack Obama!!

But Ivanka is prolly pissed so maybe he will go extreme anti-establishment again.

Or maybe his golf game was worse than usual and he gets pissed at a random country for not kissing his real estate development ring over the years.

Then again, the self-preservation, anti-Mueller tweet storm is the most popular one and we’ll have the Sunday new shows pushing out new quotes.

Or maybe…

Oh gawd. Why is he running this country?!?!?!?

I recall reading an article a few years back by an Australian recounting all the red tape required to get his green card. A dozen different offices, each with its own forms and each not talking to the other offices.

IOW, it’s impossible to game the system unless you have a shit-ton of money to buy one of those “investment visas.”

The US is also strict about Americans marrying foreigners. The couple has to have been together at least six months for the spouse to qualify for either a fiance/fiancee visa or married visa. My friend learned this the hard way four months after he married his Chinese girlfriend.

The rationale is to discourage “hit-and-runs,” where the foreign spouse marries the American solely to get the visa, only to dump the guy/gal at the first opportunity once in the States.

His theory is like the Chinese Emperors’—all trade is “tribute”. Both sides have to agree that what we give is worth less than what we get, or we’re being ripped off.

He just can’t get it in his head that tariffs are a tax paid by the importing companies, which they pass onto the consumers. The “USA” — meaning the government — is not getting ripped off. And arguably, neither are the consumers, because they can always buy a similar, less costly product.

Meanwhile, Trump’s tariffs are hurting American manufacturers, whose supply chains have suddenly become more expensive. And they don’t have domestic sources for those products, or the domestic sources are even more expensive than the imported ones.

It’s madness, I tell you!

Mao was, too. His model of collectivist farming was such a major disaster that millions of Chinese starved to death before it was quietly shelved. Trump is lucky that he’s pulling this bullshit when the economy is churning along quite nicely, so the immediate effects are being masked by the momentum of the markets. Eventually, the damage will be felt, and there will be a retraction.

Coca-Cola is buying the Costa Coffee chain from Whitbread.

bbc.com

Costa is one of the coffeeshop chains doing business in China. They are my Starbucks alternative, so I hope the new owners don’t screw things up.

A few decades ago, Coca-Cola paid a hefty price for some consumer research that told them coffee was dead, concluding; “no one was interested in hot and bitter; cold and sweet is the future.” So they sold their coffee business for pennies on the dollar to P&G, which then retired the brand.

The rank and file members took the advice of a long-time employee and fellow union member to “invite” the union’s executive board to negotiate a contract. When they sat down with management they got a contract proposal in six hours. The six hour contract was approved by most of the rank and file.

Interesting tidbit about Ellie Dylan:

Finally, the summer before she was to begin law school, Dylan was hired to do radio shows on WWRH-FM and WPNX-AM in her hometown.[8] There she posed pointed questions to the likes of David Duke, Grand Dragon of the KKK., and Lester Maddox, controversial Georgia Governor, who is reported to have walked off her show. Thereafter, a local radio station employee told Dylan “You’ll never make it in radio. Because you’re different.”[7]

Not only did she make it in radio, she was also successful in Television and she now runs her own Childrens education company.

I’m going to be real disappointed if the base sees his one track mind as the answer. Yes, we have economic inequality issues and yes, I’m glad Bernie is aware of those but it’s a damn shame that he not only isn’t aware of the other ones but he just sees them as some distraction. Very white of him in his Vermont that has less PoC people than my home county does to talk that way.

For some reason a lot of this Bernie crap is being driven hard by some in the media.

They seem to want to paint all Democrats as socialist in the likeness of Bernie.

And of course, refuse to mention Bernie is an Independent and we have real Democrats that offer more than what Bernie offers and can deliver.

It’s troubling. I hope the Democratic leadership figures out a way to tamp this down or go over it and say we are way more than just Democratic Socialists. We are way more than Bernie a guy that won’t even join us unless he finds it convenient and to his benefit.

Like I’m sorry but it’s patronizing as hell for a Senator of a state 95% white to just dismiss racial political issues as a “distraction” to what he sees as the class war. And I hate saying this but maybe that’s part of why Scandinavia had an easier time passing extensive government programs. The New Deal after all was much more easier sold on the American people when they were told that PoC didn’t have to share in its benefits. And that’s definitely how FDR got the Southern senators to accept it.

The man’s just not a leader. He’s not inclusionary. I think I saw Gillum today point out that the party’s big enough for Bernie/Warren and Senator Manchin. For example, there’s 60,000 Democrats in the entire state of Montana (the state’s population is over a million) — but their 16 DNC delegates were real true DNC delegates. Bernie is similar to Trump, without the inflammatory and insulting rhetoric, with some government experience, and with a much larger vocabulary. He did real damage to the Democratic party in 2016 and his followers are continuing on that route. Like Trump, he pretends to be a populist but has refused to release his tax returns, shows little sympathy to racial problems in this country, and is a fan of Russia. He makes everything about himself, though in a more polite way.

There are some seriously gerrymandered states; places where the party that gets 52% of the vote statewide has only 45% of the state legislature. Repealing the 17th lets the gerrymanderers pick a senator the people of the state wouldn’t want.

“all things popular… unmitigated plunder”

I take it this is a conservative, who wants only a certain percentage to do the plundering.

He either doesn’t know history or he’s lying. 30-70 split on that one.

Could still be both

That’s a stupid and uneducated way of looking at it but then again Massie is from the Paul School for the Constitutional Challenged.

Maybe because McCain represented the aspects of service we value that Trump lacks but that’s too hard for a Trump sucker like Howie to get.

Libertarian types often ignore the corruption of state/local government and they definitely do of business.

Conservatives are deathly afraid of the popular vote because they know that ultimately more of “those people” may vote and outnumber them. Courtesy of the Constitution, the Senate itself is gerrymandered. But this amendment will exacerbate the situation beyond repair. It doesn’t take a gerrymandered state for a minority party to have a majority of the seats: given that minority populations are concentrated in urban areas, it can happen purely as a matter of geography. Individual Senate seats currently reflect the will of the voting public for that state. But too many people have been persuaded that America should run like a corporation where your vote is weighted by your wealth. And if the Koch Bros funded Convention of States happens, that’s the world we will be living in.

1 - cause no one before this current crop every wrote a book “retire at 30 with $1m”

2 - IF you retire at 30 with $1m in the bank, you’re gonna be awfully surprised when you turn somewhere around 48-55

and you’re not nearly gonna enjoy the kind of luxury, jet-set lifestyle you think you will

This philosophy includes a substantial down-scaling of one’s living standards. They adopt a lifestyle that can be supported by a much lower income, including moving to communities that are far less expensive. I suspect that there will be an unpleasant surprise in store during the next market crash.
