I’m noticing a need among liberal twitter pundits (that’s what I’m going to call Oliver Willis, Rude Pundit, and people at that level of twitter follows) to be see as being outspoken about other people’s reaction of McCain’s eulogy. They really don’t need to tell people it’s time to stop focusing on McCain. Trump will take care of that.

Why does showing the flag being put on the moon matter? When we remember Armstrong going on the moon, we don’t remember the flag. We remember that it was a triumph of humanity. Same thing when the Wrights flew the first plane in Kitty Hawk. Being called or thought of as racist is one of the worst things most whites can imagine. Not BEING racist, but being CALLED racist. Want to kill a conversation with white people? Drop that word. Otherwise well meaning white folks are so afraid of being CALLED racist that we can’t even examine our feelings and thoughts honestly, lest we find it in ourselves.

But if we never look for it, if we can’t admit it, we can’t stop doing it. First you have to admit it, then you can try to be better.

But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd.

I’m now convinced the reason all of the conservatives have changed their complete stance on Russia is some time in 2014 or a bit later a message went out that Russia was open for business. Not your normal business mind you.

At that time some people must have gotten involved knowing what was coming.

Anyway, along comes Trump and he showed how Russia could be your partner and instead of trying to stop it and hold Trump accountable for using them to help twist the election, they all seemed to want to see how they too could get in on the ground floor.

Lindsey Graham is a good example. Some ‘business’ was done between Russia and Lindsey and now he, like Rand Paul and the July 4th Eight are all in on expanding relations with Russia and backing off on doing anything about the election.

Money to be made, fuck America. Heck, they may have tapped America and Europe out anyway, time to find a new source, no matter what it takes, no matter what it costs…us.

I think Chuck Todd has gotten worse. I think the split in this country is too much for a wimp like him. He is befuddled by this political atmosphere and doesn’t have the chops to handle it.

Plus, he spends more time on how he wants to deliver one of his questions. He has worked so hard to phrase it, he comes up lame and trite. He tries to be cutesy when direct and to the point is best.

And he is terrible at comeback/follow up questions. All he has are his over-thought and prepared questions. A string statement from his guest seems to shut him up because he accepts it. So, he moves to the next ‘great’ question.

Monitor lizards differ from most other known species of lizards in that they have a high metabolism. This means they must be fed more often than other lizards. In fact, while they are referred to as “lizards,” monitors are thought to be most closely related to snakes. They are considered rather intelligent and have even shown the ability to count as high as 6.

re: #76 Belafon

Mr. Woolery might do well to remember this little passage. I prefer the Matthew 26 telling:

Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8 But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this good news[b] is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”

(Bold added)

So in a very real sense he did have a very profound, beautiful and expensive funeral as well as being blessed enough by his father to be present in this world for it.

Now, the one who built his message on love understands what people need to do when we lose those we love. He would encourage us rather than be offended by us. Because, unlike you lost in the sin of your jealousy Mr. Woolery, He loves everyone.

Congrats. People don’t speak up enough of the benefits of owning a condo. I’ve owned one for 12 years. I don’t worry about either yard maintenance or a rise in rent. (Condo fees are another story). And if I leave, I can sell and actually get some money back. Plus I can pretty much decorate the place as I want (wall colors, flooring, whatever). And because I owned my place, I was able to take advantage of both HARP and a program that paid my mortgage to retain my home during a hard stretch back in 2010.

OK, I looked up mahl stick. Now I know what he’s doing.

That’s probably not Birdy McBirdface, either.

His use is probably to allow him to work while some of the oil paint is still wet and you can’t get your hand anywhere near the surface and the paint or you mess it all up. It also helps stabilize the hand if you have some nerve jitters.

In sign painting, lettering and the like if you are good, (I’m not trained, I have just seen it used, it’s tricky) you can do straight lines and even nice gentle curves if you know how to pivot the stick and move your hand at the same time.

Having to leave the country for the City v. soon, so lobster and fresh corn.
Not that one can’t get lobsters in NY, they just seem to taste better outside city limits.
The corn, though: the local (So. Berkshires) markets get their eating corn from this one farm in Stephentown, NY: nothing like it elsewhere. THIS we will miss.

Proposed US law would require President to act against overseas hackers
31 Aug 2018 by Danny Bradbury
Excerpts:

US senators from both sides of the house have announced a bill that would force the President to act against overseas hackers found targeting the US, or explain why he hadn’t.

Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Chris Coons (D-DE) announced the Cyber Deterrence and Response Act (S.3378) this week.

The bill explicitly calls out election tampering, which has become an increasingly critical problem for the US, citing as an infraction:

Interfering with or undermining election processes or institutions by tampering with, altering, or causing misappropriation of data.

That makes me drool just thinking about it. I dearly love pot roast (my father always had Friday night off so he would cook and pot roast was his signature dish, especially if he had time for the Yorkshire pudding to go with it.) While I am sure your recipie would be very different, I am also certain it would be delightful.

We’re going to need a full gym floor, a case of assorted colored tape, and some mescaline.

I’ve suspected; no, believed; for many years that the conspiracy culture was rooted in the 60s/70s drug culture. To anyone who was around then, and not too stoned to pay attention, this is obvious.
The many “hip” preachers who came along in the 70s to minister to, and exploit, the unwashed hippie masses then served as a vector for transferring conspiracism to, first, the Pentecostal movement, with the rest of conservative Christianity infected by the late 70s.
I first heard about the secret national tunnel network, recently championed by Alex Jones, from a Pentecostal preacher in 1978. The preacher also warned of secret gummint plans to round up and massacre Christians. He even knew about the secret spraying of mind-control chemicals, though not specifically from aircraft, and the similar contamination of food supplies.
This anti-government aspect dovetailed nicely with an existing conspiracist sub-culture from a completely different source, the John Birch Society. Alex Jones and the Trump administration are the natural offspring of this unholy marriage.
When they say “years in the making, they are not kidding.”

Conspiracy culture requires an in-group of teachers who have the Knowledge which they will dole out to those faithful enough to value it; the groups are made for each other.

Omarosa taped nearly every conversation she had while working in the W.H., including ones with “all of the Trumps,” a source who watched her make many of the tapes tells Axios. Omarosa did this with a personal phone, almost always on record mode.

Jimmy Kimmel’s reaction:

“I’m not sure who I’m supposed to root for in this. It’s like Lord Voldemort vs. King Joffrey.”

I wandered over to FR to see how they were feeling about Qanon these days. There was a thread yesterday with well over 300 posts going on about a variety of of pointless, but apparently significant stuff. Among all the deep analysis of where people were looking or pointing at McCain’s funeral, there was also comment on these pictures (scroll down about half way.) Apparently they are proof positive of a pedophile ring because they are art works created by a distant relative of Tony Podesta’s. Posters wonder if they are mannequins illustrating the evil acts, or real people wearing masks to conceal their identities.
How can people take this stuff seriously?

Indeed. The same pattern is found in multi-level marketing, another sub-culture in which conspiracism flourishes.

It’s significant that Q-Anon is most popular among older marks. Many a low-functioning Boomer has gone through a long progression from drug-addled hippie wannabe to born-again Jesus person to right-wing Evangelical. At each step, they have been exposed to a new aspect of conspiracy culture, with certain constants (eg nefarious gummint agents and evil scientists) maintained and reinforced the whole way. Anyone who knows very many such people will have seen this progression over and over.

“They humiliate us,” a mother from Honduras told me at the McAllen bus station, where hopeful but exhausted migrants go after their often-traumatic initiation into the U.S. immigration system. “With sticks, they beat the metal bars to wake us up. If the children cry, they go after us. There was a child with a fever. They bathed him in cold water and let him lie naked on the floor except for his underwear. The mother was crying because the child is crying. She wants to cover him, but guards tell her she can’t.”
…………
One woman sat on the floor quietly crying. Poverty had forced her to leave her two sons behind in Honduras, and one had died in her absence. Another mother sat nervously rubbing coins together between her fingers. She left Guatemala with her six-year-old son after her father threatened to hack the family to death with a machete. She told me that most people in custody with her had signed forms in English that they were unable to read, in hopes of being let out of the crowded hielera: “‘What if I never sign, and I’m never let out,’ I thought. I think almost everyone signed. No one knew what those documents said.”

Now drawings are verboten.

Speaking of conspiracy-crazed conservative boomers:

Lori Bakker: Liberals are planning to ‘lock Christians up in insane asylums’

Thanks to Reagan we don’t really have “insane asylums” anymore. It should be possible to set some up pretty quickly as soon as the dire need is recognized. Do we still have those FEMA trailers? I have a suitably godforsaken site near Lubbock that I might be willing to donate.
